We use the PSC z IRAS galaxy redshift survey to analyse the cosmological galaxy dipole out to a distance of 300  h 1 Mpc. The masked area is filled in three different ways, first by sampling the whole sky at random, secondly by using neighbouring areas to fill a masked region, and thirdly using a spherical harmonic analysis. The method of treatment of the mask is found to have a significant effect on the final calculated dipole.
The conversion from redshift space to real space is accomplished by using an analytical model of the cluster and void distribution, based on 88 nearby groups, 854 clusters and 163 voids, with some of the clusters and all of the voids found from the PSC z data base.
The dipole for the whole PSC z sample appears to have converged within a distance of 200  h 1 Mpc and yields a value for , consistent with earlier determinations from IRAS samples by a variety of methods. For b =1, the 2 range for 0 is 0.431.02.
The direction of the dipole is within 13° of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) dipole, the main uncertainty in direction being associated with the masked area behind the Galactic plane. The improbability of further major contributions to the dipole amplitude coming from volumes larger than those surveyed here means that the question of the origin of the CMB dipole is essentially resolved.  相似文献

We compare the probability density function (PDF) and its low-order moments (variance and skewness) of the smoothed IRAS Point Source Catalogue Redshift Survey (PSC z ) galaxy density field and of the corresponding simulated PSC z look-alikes, generated from N -body simulations of six different dark matter models: four structure-normalized with     and     , one COBE -normalized, and the old standard cold dark matter model. The galaxy distributions are smoothed with a Gaussian window at three different smoothing scales,     , 10 and 15  h −1 Mpc. We find that the simulation PSC z look-alike PDFs are sensitive only to the normalization of the power spectrum, probably owing to the shape similarity of the simulated galaxy power spectrum on the relevant scales. We find that the only models that are consistent, at a high significance level, with the observed PSC z PDF are models with a relatively low power spectrum normalization     . From the phenomenologically derived σ 8–moments relation, fitted from the simulation data, we find that the PSC z moments suggest     .  相似文献

We present a comparison between the peculiar velocity field measured from the ENEAR all-sky D n– σ catalogue and that derived from the galaxy distribution of the IRAS Point Source Catalog Redshift Survey (PSC z ). The analysis is based on a modal expansion of these data in redshift space by means of spherical harmonics and Bessel functions. The effective smoothing scale of the expansion is almost linear with redshift reaching 1500 km s−1 at 3000 km s−1. The general flow patterns in the filtered ENEAR and PSC z velocity fields agree well within 6000 km s−1, assuming a linear biasing relation between the mass and the PSC z galaxies. The comparison allows us to determine the parameter     where Ω is the cosmological density parameter and b is the linear biasing factor. A likelihood analysis of the ENEAR and PSC z modes yields     in good agreement with values obtained from Tully–Fisher surveys.  相似文献

We present a state-of-the-art linear redshift distortion analysis of the recently published IRAS Point Source Catalog Redshift Survey (PSC z ). The procedure involves linear compression into 4096 KarhunenLoève (signal-to-noise) modes culled from a potential pool of 3105 modes, followed by quadratic compression into three separate power spectra, the galaxygalaxy, galaxyvelocity and velocityvelocity power spectra. Least squares-fitting to the decorrelated power spectra yields a linear redshift distortion parameter  相似文献

We report a measurement of the real-space (not redshift-space) power spectrum of galaxies over four and a half decades of wavenumber, 0.01 to 300  h  Mpc−1, from the IRAS Point Source Catalog Redshift Survey (PSC z ). Since estimates of power are highly correlated in the non-linear regime, we also report results for the pre-whitened power spectrum, which is less correlated. The inferred bias between optically selected APM and IRAS -selected PSC z galaxies is about 1.15 at linear scales ≲0.3  h  Mpc−1, increasing to about 1.4 at non-linear scales ≳1  h  Mpc−1. The non-linear power spectrum of PSC z shows a near power-law behaviour to the smallest scales measured, with possible mild upward curvature in the broad vicinity of   k ∼2  h  Mpc−1  . Contrary to the prediction of unbiased dark matter models, there is no prominent inflection at the linear to non-linear transition scale, and no turnover at the transition to the virialized regime. The non-linear power spectrum of PSC z requires scale-dependent bias: all Dark Matter models without scale-dependent bias are ruled out with high confidence.  相似文献

Comparing the gravitational acceleration induced on the Local Group of galaxies by different tracers of the underlying density field we estimate, within the linear gravitational instability theory and the linear biasing ansatz, their relative bias factors. Using optical SSRS2 galaxies, IRAS (PSC z ) galaxies and Abell/ACO clusters, we find b O,I≈1.21±0.06 and b C,I≈4.3±0.8, in agreement with other recent studies. Finally, there is an excellent one-to-one correspondence of the PSC z and Abell/ACO cluster dipole profiles, once the latter is rescaled by b C,I, out to at least ∼150  h −1 Mpc.  相似文献

We examine the possibility of the decay of the vacuum energy into a homogeneous distribution of a thermalized cosmic microwave background (CMB), which is characteristic of an adiabatic vacuum energy decay into photons. It is shown that observations of the primordial density fluctuation spectrum, obtained from CMB and galaxy distribution data, restrict the possible decay rate. When photon creation due to an adiabatic vacuum energy decay takes place, the standard linear temperature dependence   T ( z ) = T 0(1 + z )  is modified, where T 0 is the present CMB temperature, and can be parametrized by a modified CMB temperature dependence     . From the observed CMB and galaxy distribution data, a strong limit on the maximum value of the decay rate is obtained by placing a maximum value  βmax≃ 3.4 × 10−3  on the β parameter.  相似文献

We use the Point Source Catalogue Redshift Survey galaxy redshift catalogue combined with constrained simulations based on the IRAS 1.2-Jy galaxy density field to estimate the contribution of hot gas in the local universe to the Sunyaev–Zeldovich (SZ) effect on a large scale. We produce a full-sky healpix map predicting the SZ effect from clusters as well as diffuse hot gas within  80  h −1 Mpc  . Performing cross-correlation tests between this map and the WMAP data in pixel, harmonic and wavelet space we can put an upper limit on the effect. We conclude that the SZ effect from diffuse gas in the local universe cannot be detected in current cosmic microwave background (CMB) data and is not a large-scale contaminating factor  (ℓ < 60)  in studies of CMB angular anisotropies. We derive an upper limit for the mean temperature decrement of  Δ T < 0.33 μK  at the 2σ confidence level for the 61-GHz frequency channel. However, for future high-sensitivity experiments observing at a wider range of frequencies, the predicted large-scale SZ effect could be of importance.  相似文献

We measure the autocorrelation function, ξ , of galaxies in the IRAS Point Source Catalogue galaxy redshift (PSC z ) survey and investigate its dependence on the far-infrared colour and absolute luminosity of the galaxies. We find that the PSC z survey correlation function can be modelled out to a scale of 10  h −1 Mpc as a power law of slope 1.30±0.04 and correlation length 4.77±0.20 . At a scale of 75  h −1 Mpc we find the value of J 3 to be 1500±400 .
We also find that galaxies with higher 100 μm/60 μm flux ratio, corresponding to cooler dust temperatures, are more strongly clustered than warmer galaxies. Splitting the survey into three colour subsamples, we find that, between 1 and 10  h −1 Mpc, the ratio of ξ is a factor of 1.5 higher for the cooler galaxies compared with the hotter galaxies. This is consistent with the suggestion that hotter galaxies have higher star formation rates, and correspond to later-type galaxies which are less clustered than earlier types.
Using volume-limited subsamples, we find a weak variation of ξ as a function of absolute luminosity, in the sense that more luminous galaxies are less clustered than fainter galaxies. The trend is consistent with the colour dependence of ξ and the observed colour–luminosity correlation, but the large uncertainties mean that it has a low statistical significance.  相似文献

We investigate the effect of orientation-dependent selection effects on galaxy clustering in redshift space. It is found that if galaxies are aligned by large-scale tidal fields, then these selection effects give rise to a dependence of the observed galaxy density on the local tidal field, in addition to the well-known dependences on the matter density and radial velocity gradient. This alters the galaxy power spectrum in a way that is different for Fourier modes parallel to and perpendicular to the line of sight. These tidal galaxy alignments can thus mimic redshift space distortions (RSD), and thus result in a bias in the measurement of the velocity power spectrum. If galaxy orientations are affected only by the local tidal field, then the tidal alignment effect has exactly the same scale and angular dependence as the RSDs in the linear regime, so it cannot be projected out or removed by masking small scales in the analysis. We consider several toy models of tidal alignments and orientation-dependent selection, normalize their free parameter (an amplitude) to recent observations, and find that they could bias the velocity amplitude   f ( z ) G ( z )  by 5–10 per cent in some models, although most models give much smaller contamination. We conclude that tidal alignments may be a significant systematic error in RSD measurements that aim to test general relativity via the growth of large-scale structure. We briefly discuss possible mitigation strategies.  相似文献

We apply the ztrace algorithm to the optical NOG and infrared PSC z galaxy catalogues to reconstruct the pattern of primordial fluctuations that have generated our local Universe. We check that the density fields traced by the two catalogues are well correlated, and consistent with a linear relation [either in δ or in  log (1 +δ)  ] with relative bias (of NOG with respect to PSC z )   b rel= 1.1 ± 0.1  . The relative bias relation is used to fill the optical zone of avoidance at  | b | < 20°  using the PSC z galaxy density field.
We perform extensive testing on simulated galaxy catalogues to optimize the reconstruction. The quality of the reconstruction is predicted to be good at large scales, up to a limiting wavenumber   k lim≃ 0.4 h Mpc−1  beyond which all information is lost. We find that the improvement arising from the denser sampling of the optical catalogue is compensated by the uncertainties connected to the larger zone of avoidance.
The initial conditions reconstructed from the NOG catalogue are found (analogously to those from the PSC z ) to be consistent with a Gaussian paradigm. We use the reconstructions to produce sets of initial conditions ready to be used for constrained simulations of our local Universe.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the effects of perturbations in a dark energy component with a constant equation of state on large-scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. The inclusion of perturbations increases the large-scale power. We investigate more speculative dark energy models with   w < −1  and find the opposite behaviour. Overall the inclusion of perturbations in the dark energy component increases the degeneracies. We generalize the parametrization of the dark energy fluctuations to allow for an arbitrary constant sound speed, and we show how constraints from CMB experiments change if this is included. Combining CMB with large-scale structure, Hubble parameter and supernovae observations we obtain   w =−1.02 ± 0.16 (1σ)  as a constraint on the equation of state, which is almost independent of the sound speed chosen. With the presented analysis we find no significant constraint on the constant speed of sound of the dark energy component.  相似文献

We present the catalogue, mask, redshift data and selection function for the PSC z survey of 15 411 IRAS galaxies across 84 per cent of the sky. Most of the IRAS data are taken from the Point Source Catalog, but this has been supplemented and corrected in various ways to improve the completeness and uniformity. We quantify the known imperfections in the catalogue, and we assess the overall uniformity, completeness and data quality. We find that overall the catalogue is complete and uniform to within a few per cent at high latitudes and 10 per cent at low latitudes. Ancillary information, access details, guidelines and caveats for using the catalogue are given.  相似文献

We examine the ability of the future Planck mission to provide a catalogue of galaxy clusters observed via their Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (SZ) distortion in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). For this purpose we produce full-sky SZ maps based on N -body simulations and scaling relations between cluster properties for several cosmological models. We extrapolate the N -body simulations by a mass function to high redshifts in order to obtain a realistic SZ background. The simulated Planck observations include, besides the thermal and kinematic SZ effects, contributions from the primordial CMB, extragalactic point sources as well as Galactic dust, free–free and synchrotron emission. A harmonic-space maximum-entropy method is used to separate the SZ signal from contaminating components in combination with a cluster detection algorithm based on thresholding and flux integration to identify clusters and to obtain their fluxes. We estimate a survey sensitivity limit (depending on the quality of the recovered cluster flux) and provide cluster survey completeness and purity estimates. We find that, given our modelling and detection algorithm, Planck will reliably detect at least several thousands of clusters over the full sky. The exact number depends on the particular cosmological model (up to 10 000 cluster detections in a concordance ΛCDM model with  σ8= 0.9  ). We show that the Galaxy does not significantly affect the cluster detection. Furthermore, the dependence of the thermal SZ power spectrum on the matter variance on scales of  8 h −1  Mpc and the quality of its reconstruction by the employed method are investigated. Our simulations suggest that the Planck cluster sample will not only be useful as a basis for follow-up observations, but also will have the ability to provide constraints on cosmological parameters.  相似文献

We study the mass distribution in six nearby  ( z < 0.06)  relaxed Abell clusters of galaxies A0262, A0496, A1060, A2199, A3158 and A3558. Given the dominance of dark matter in galaxy clusters, we approximate their total density distribution by the Navarro, Frenk & White (NFW) formula characterized by virial mass and concentration. We also assume that the anisotropy of galactic orbits is reasonably well described by a constant and that galaxy distribution traces that of the total density. Using the velocity and position data for 120–420 galaxies per cluster we calculate, after removal of interlopers, the profiles of the lowest order even velocity moments, dispersion and kurtosis. We then reproduce the velocity moments by jointly fitting the moments to the solutions of the Jeans equations. Including the kurtosis in the analysis allows us to break the degeneracy between the mass distribution and anisotropy and constrain the anisotropy as well as the virial mass and concentration. The method is tested in detail on mock data extracted from the N -body simulations of dark matter haloes. We find that the best-fitting Galactic orbits are remarkably close to isotropic in most clusters. Using the fitted pairs of mass and concentration parameters for the six clusters, we conclude that the trend of decreasing concentration for higher masses found in the cosmological N -body simulations is consistent with the data. By scaling the individual cluster data by mass, we combine them to create a composite cluster with 1465 galaxies and perform a similar analysis on such sample. The estimated concentration parameter then lies in the range  1.5 < c < 14  and the anisotropy parameter in the range  −1.1 < β < 0.5  at the 95 per cent confidence level.  相似文献

We consider the distortion in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) resulting from galactic winds at high redshift. Winds outflowing from galaxies have been hypothesized to be possible sources of metals in the intergalactic medium, which is known to have been enriched to 10−2.5 Z at z ∼3. We model these winds as functions of mass of the parent galaxy and redshift, assuming that they activate at a common initial redshift, z in, and calculate the mean y -distortion and the angular power spectrum of the distortion in the CMB. We find that the thermal Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (SZ) effect resulting from the winds is consistent with previous estimates. The distortion arising from the kinetic SZ (kSZ) effect is, however, found to be more important than the thermal SZ (tSZ) effect. We find that the distortion resulting from galactic winds is an important contribution to the power spectrum of distortion at very small angular scales ( l ∼104). We also find that the power spectrum resulting from clustering dominates the Poisson power spectrum for l ≤(4–5)×105. We show explicitly how the combined power spectrum from wind dominates over that of clusters at 217 GHz, relevant for PLANCK . We also show how these constraints change when the efficiency of the winds is varied.  相似文献

A class of spatially flat models with cold dark matter (CDM), a cosmological constant and a broken-scale-invariant (BSI) step-like primordial (initial) spectrum of adiabatic perturbations, generated in an exactly solvable inflationary model where the inflaton potential has a rapid change of its first derivative at some point, is confronted with existing observational data on angular fluctuations of the CMB temperature, galaxy clustering and peculiar velocities of galaxies. If we locate the step in the initial spectrum at k  ≃ 0.05  h Mpc−1, where a feature in the spectrum of Abell clusters of galaxies was found that could reflect a property of the initial spectrum, and if the large-scale flat plateau of the spectrum is normalized according to the COBE data, the only remaining parameter of the spectrum is p — the ratio of amplitudes of the metric perturbations between the small-scale and large-scale flat plateaux. Allowed regions in the plane of parameters (Ω = 1 − ΩΛ,  H 0) satisfying all data have been found for p lying in the region (0.8–1.7). Especially good agreement of the form of the present power spectrum in this model with the form of the cluster power spectrum is obtained for the inverted step ( p  < 1,  p  = 0.7–0.8), when the initial spectrum has slightly more power on small scales.  相似文献

We present results for a galaxy formation model that includes a simple treatment for the disruption of dwarf galaxies by gravitational forces and galaxy encounters within galaxy clusters. This is implemented a posteriori in a semi-analytic model by considering the stability of cluster dark matter subhaloes at   z = 0  . We assume that a galaxy whose dark matter substructure has been disrupted will itself disperse, while its stars become part of the population of intracluster stars responsible for the observed intracluster light. Despite the simplicity of this assumption, our results show a substantial improvement over previous models and indicate that the inclusion of galaxy disruption is indeed a necessary ingredient of galaxy formation models. We find that galaxy disruption suppresses the number density of dwarf galaxies by about a factor of 2. This makes the slope of the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function shallower, in agreement with observations. In particular, the abundance of faint, red galaxies is strongly suppressed. As a result, the luminosity function of red galaxies and the distinction between the red and the blue galaxy populations in colour–magnitude relationships are correctly predicted. Finally, we estimate a fraction of intracluster light comparable to that found in clusters of galaxies.  相似文献
