Summary The method of numerical modelling of ionospheric filtration of the Fourier components of a signal from the frequency range of Pc1 micropulsations is employed in the spectral analysis (frequency f, angle of incidence ) of the relative characteristic of the amplitude and energy reflectivity of the ionospheric layer with respect to ordinary Alfvén modes incident in the meridional plane. The results are presented for four different models characterizing the midlatitude day- and night-time ionosphere under low and high solar activity. The results indicate the specificity of filtration of ordinary Alfvén waves. It is proved that the lower region of the modelled ionosphere, as part of the midlatitude ionospheric wave guide (in particular the F2 layer), behaves like an Alfvén resonator in the given spectral range.

Summary The convection in a rapidly rotating electrically conducting, fluid horizontal layer of non-constant stratification, permeated by an inhomogeneous magnetic field, is studied. In this connection, a temperature model of the layer is constructed, which creates a structure such that part of the layer is unstably and a part stably stratified. The results obtained are applied to the conditions in the fluid Earth's core.

, it is proved that abnormally high solar activity may be expected in the first half of the 21st century. At this time, the maximum annual relative sunspot numbers RM of the 11-year cycles should reach values of about 300 units. This abnormally high solar activity in the next century can be understood as the antipole of the Maunderean minimum. This forecast is used to discuss some of the possible consequences of this abnormally high solar activity for the processes on the Earth: changes of climate (heat waves and draughts in Central Europe), in the higher layers of the Earth's atmosphere (anomalous propagation of radio waves, increased effect of the density of the upper atmosphere on the orbits of man-made satellites), in seismicity (increased seismic activity in Europe and Southeast Asia), for technical devices (induced electric currents), in the biosphere. etc.

Summary The effect of the IMF sector boundary crossing (IMF SBC) in the vorticity area index (VAI) — the well-known dip in the VAI after IMF SBC — is found to be independent of the IMF SBC effect in the cosmic ray flux. This finding refutes a recent suggestion by Lundstedt [1] that the IMF SBC effect in VAI is caused by a decrease in cosmic ray flux, but supports the concept of the IMF SBC effects in the ionosphere and atmosphere developed by Latovika [2–4]. Cosmic rays seem to affect the troposphere in another way.

The calculation of the absorbed radiation energy by water vapour requires the amount of precipitable water in the atmosphere to be known. Actinometric and aerological measurements were used to establish the relation between vapour pressure and absorbed solar radiation.

Summary Magnetic variations were recorded along three profiles crossing the southeastern margin of the Bohemian Massif. The data were processed in order to get induction vectors (Wiesevectors) and in-phase and out-of-phase induction vectors (Schmucker-vectors). Several events of field variations were separated into external and internal parts. The same events were also treated by a physical-statistical approach. Taking into account these results, we were able to delineate a zone of electrical inhomogeneity. It is in close relation to the Moravo-Silesian lineament. The depth of the internal anomalous field source was estimated at 20 to 25 km.

Summary The dependence of Pn-wave velocities on the heat flow, temperature at the crustmantle boundary and the thickness of the Earth's crust in Europe was investigated in relation to the problem of lateral inhomogeneities in the upper mantle. A map was constructed of the distribution of Pn-wave velocities on the territory of Europe. The relations these investigations yielded, were compared with the results of laboratory experiments and all the results are discussed from the physical point of view. The conclusion drawn is that that temperature and pressure effect provide a sufficient explanation of the observed regional changes of Pn-wave velocities for the European continent.

Summary The influence of the IMF sector structure on the total ozone content is studied in the European middle latitudes (5 stations,46°–52°N, 1°W–20°E) for the winters of the period 1963–1982. The average effect of the IMF sector boundary crossing (SBC) is very weak. The correction for the seasonal trend is quite crucial. Only detrended results are considered to be reliable. A statistically significant and relatively large effect is found to exist in the total ozone only for geoactive proton sector boundaries, while there is no demonstrable effect for non-proton (common) sector boundaries. The effect of proton boundaries consists in a decrease of the total ozone from higher values before the IMF SBC to lower values after the IMF SBC and it differs from the common types of IMF SBC effects. Our results seem to explain the contradiction between results obtained by other authors.
