Observations of gamma-ray lines from solar flares by SMM demonstrated that energetic protons and heavy ions are accelerated during the impulsive phase. In order to understand the acceleration mechanism for gamma-ray producing protons and heavy ions, we have studied the characteristics of the flares from which gamma-ray lines were observed by SMM In order to identify the characteristics unique to the gamma-ray line flares, we have also studied intense hard X-ray flares with no gamma-ray line emissions. We have found the following characteristics: 1) Most of the gamma-ray line flares produced intense radio bursts of types II and IV. 2) For most of the gamma-ray line flares, the time profiles of high-energy (? 300 keV) hard X-rays are delayed by order of several seconds with respect to those of low-energy hard X-rays. The delay times seem to be correlated with the spatial sizes of the flares. 3) In Hα importance, the gamma-ray line flares range from sub-flares to importance-3 flares. 4) The hard X-ray spectra of the gamma-ray line flares are generally flatter (harder) than those of flares with no gamma-ray line emission. From these characteristics, we conclude that the first-order Fermi acceleration operating in a flare loop is likely to be the acceleration mechanism for energetic protons and heavy ions as well as relativistic electrons.  相似文献

X-ray emission and absorption features are of great importance in our understanding the nature and environment of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). So far, iron emission lines have been detected in at least four GRB afterglows. In this paper, the observational properties and physical constraints on materials surrounding GRB sources are reviewed, and several classes of theoretical models are also discussed. We will specially concentrate on the Cerenkov line mechanism, in which the broad iron lines are expected, and a small mass of Fe is required to produce the large line luminosity. In addition, our interpretation can favor the recent jet unified model for different classes of gamma-ray bursts with a standard energy reservoir.  相似文献

The depth dependence of the production of neutrons and capture gamma-ray line emission are calculated by Monte Carlo simulation of the nuclear processes taking place when flare-accelerated ions interact with the solar atmosphere. The calculations also give the heliocentric-angular dependence of the 2.223 MeV neutron capture line emission as a function of accelerated-ion energy spectrum and angular distribution. These results are compared with observations to determine the energy spectrum shape and total ion number for various flares.  相似文献

We assume that internal shocks of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) consist of multiple sub-jets with a collimation half-angle of about several times gamma-1i, where gammai is the Lorentz factor of each sub-jet. If by chance a sub-jet is first emitted off-axis from the line of sight, the observed peak energy can be in the X-ray region. Next, if by chance a subsequent sub-jet is emitted along the line of sight, then the peak energy will be in the gamma-ray region and the gamma ray may arrive after the X-ray precursor from the former sub-jet depending on parameters. This model predicts a new class of GRBs with extremely weak and short gamma-ray emission but X-ray precursors and/or postcursors as well as an afterglow.  相似文献

Gamma-ray lines are the fingerprints of nuclear transitions, carrying the memory of high energy processes in the universe. Setting out from what is presently known about line emission in gamma-ray astronomy, requirements for future telescopes are outlined. The inventory of observed line features shows that sources with a wide range of angular and spectral extent have to be handled: the scientific objectives for gamma-ray spectroscopy are spanning from compact objects as broad class annihilators, over longlived galactic radioisotopes with hotspots in the degree-range to the extremely extended galactic disk and bulge emission of the narrow e e+ line. The instrumental categories which can be identified in the energy range of nuclear astrophysics have their origins in the different concepts of light itself: geometrical optics is the base of modulating aperture systems-these methods will continue to yield adequate performances in the near future. Beyond this, focusing telescopes and Compton telescopes, based on wave- and quantum- optics respectively, may be capable to further push the limits of resolution and sensitivity.  相似文献

Relativistic electrons in large solar flares produce gamma-ray continuum by bremsstrahlung and microwave emission by gyrosynchrotron radiation. Using observations of the 1972, August 4 flare, we evaluate in detail the electron spectrum and the physical properties (density, magnetic field, size, and temperature) of the common emitting region of these radiations. We also obtain information on energetic protons in this flare by using gamma-ray lines. From the electron spectrum, the proton-to-electron ratio, and the time dependences of the microwave emission, the 2.2 MeV line and the gamma-ray continuum, we conclude that in large solar flares relativistic electrons and energetic nuclei are accelerated by a mechanism which is different from the mechanism which accelerates 100 keV electrons in flares.Research supported by NASA Grant 21-002-316 at the University of Maryland, College Park.  相似文献

We present an internal shock model with external characteristics for explaining the complicated light curves of gamma-ray bursts. Shocks produce gamma-rays in the interaction between a precessing beam of relativistic particles and the interstellar medium. Each time the particle beam passes the same line of sight with the observer the interstellar medium is pushed outward. Subsequent interactions between the medium and the beam are delayed by the extra distance to be travelled for the particles before the shock can form. This results in a natural retardation and leads to an intrinsic asymmetry in the light curves produced for gamma-ray bursts. In addition, we account for the cooling of the electron–proton plasma in the shocked region, which gives rise to an exponential decay in the gamma-ray flux. The combination of these effects and the precessing jet of ultrarelativistic particles produces light curves that can be directly compared with observed gamma-ray burst light curves. We illustrate the model by fitting a number of observed gamma-ray bursts that are difficult to explain with only a precessing jet. We develop a genetic algorithm to fit several observed gamma-ray bursts with remarkable accuracy. We find that for different bursts the observed fluence, assuming isotropic emission, easily varies over four orders of magnitude from the energy generated intrinsically.  相似文献

The current Cherenkov telescopes together with GLAST are opening up a new window into the physics at work close to black holes and rapidly rotating neutron stars with great breakthrough potential. Very high energy gamma-ray emission up to 10 TeV is now established in several binaries. The radiative output of gamma-ray binaries is in fact dominated by emission above 1–10 MeV. Most are likely powered by the rotational spindown of a young neutron star that generates a highly relativistic wind. The interaction of this pulsar wind with the companion’s stellar wind is responsible for the high energy gamma-ray emission. There are hints that microquasars, accretion-powered binaries emitting relativistic jets, also emit gamma-ray flares that may be linked to the accretion–ejection process. Studying high energy gamma-ray emission from binaries offers good prospects for the study of pulsar winds physics and may bring new insights into the link between accretion and ejection close to black holes.  相似文献

The ESA-Mission INTEGRAL (International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory) is the next step in low-energy gamma-ray astronomy (up to 10 MeV) and will be launched in 2002. The spectrometer SPI—one of its two main instruments—is dedicated to high-resolution line spectroscopy (ΔE=2.5 keV FWHM at 1.3 MeV). SPI will concentrate on the study of lines from radioactive isotopes. A wealth of new information is expected from interstellar line emission with narrow line profiles, but exciting results are also expected from line profile measurements of individual line emitting objects such as supernovae, supernova remnants, and novae.  相似文献

Recently, detection of discrete features in the X-ray afterglow spectra of GRB 970508 and GRB 970828 was reported. The most natural interpretation of these features is that they are redshifted Fe K emission complexes. The identification of the line emission mechanism has drastic implications for the inferred mass of radiating material and hence the nature of the burst site. X-ray spectroscopy provides a direct observational constraint on these properties of gamma-ray bursters. We briefly discuss how these constraints arise in the context of an application to the spectrum of GRB 970508.  相似文献

Recently, BeppoSAX and ASCA have observed an unusual resurgence of soft X-ray emission during the afterglows of GRB 970508 and 970828, together with marginal evidence for the existence of Fe lines in both objects. We consider the implications of the existence of a torus of iron-rich material surrounding the sites of gamma-ray bursts, as would be expected in the supra-nova model; in particular, we show that the fireball will quickly hit this torus, and bring it to a temperature of ≈3×107 K. Bremsstrahlung emission from the heated-up torus will cause a resurgence of the soft X-ray emission with all expected characteristics (flux level, duration and spectral hardening with time) identical to those observed during the re-burst. Also, thermal emission from the torus will account for the observed iron line flux. These events are also observable, for instance by new missions such as SWIFT , when beaming away from our line of sight makes us miss the main burst, as fast (soft) X-ray transients, with durations of ≈103 s and fluences of ≈10−7–10−4 erg cm−2. This model provides evidence in favour of the supra-nova model for gamma-ray bursts.  相似文献

Dramatic extensions of experimental possibilities (spacecraft RHESSI, CORONAS-F and others) in solar gamma-ray astronomy call for urgent, detailed theoretical consideration of a set of physical problems of solar activity and solar-terrestrial relationships that earlier may have only been outlined. Here we undertake a theoretical analysis of issues related to the production of gamma-radiation in the processes of interactions of energetic (accelerated) heavy and middle nuclei with the nuclei of the solar atmosphere (the so-called i-j interactions). We also make an estimate of the contribution of these interactions to the formation of nuclear and isotopic abundances of the solar atmosphere in the range of light and rare elements. The analysis is carried out for solar flares in the wide range of their intensities. We compare our theoretical estimates with RHESSI observations for the flare of 2002 July 23. It was shown that the 24Mg gamma-ray emission in this event was produced by the newly generated Mg nucle  相似文献

GRB 170817A was confirmed to be associated with GW170817, which was produced by a neutron star - neutron star merger. It indicates that at least some short gamma-ray bursts come from binary neutron star mergers. Theoretically, it is widely accepted that short gamma-ray bursts can be produced by two distinctly different mechanisms, binary neutron star mergers and neutron star - black hole mergers. These two kinds of bursts should be different observationally due to their different trigger mechanisms. Motivated by this idea, we collect a universal data set constituted of 51 short gamma-ray bursts observed by Swift/BAT, among which 14 events have extended emission component. We study the observational features of these 51 events statistically. It is found that our samples consist of two distinct groups. They clearly show a bimodal distribution when their peak photon fluxes at 15–150 keV band are plotted against the corresponding fluences. Most interestingly, all the 14 short bursts with extended emission lie in a particular region of this plot. When the fluences are plotted against the burst durations, short bursts with extended emission again tend to concentrate in the long duration segment. These features strongly indicate that short gamma-ray bursts really may come from two distinct types of progenitors. We argue that those short gamma-ray bursts with extended emission come from the coalescence of neutron stars, while the short gamma-ray bursts without extended emission come from neutron star - black hole mergers.  相似文献

We present a new two-component method of fitting spectra of cosmic gamma-ray bursts, to get some information about the emission regions through this kind of fit. Our results support the existence of structure in the thin emission sheet. The peak appearing at about 780 ke V in the spectrum of GB 7811193 seems not to be a one-photon annihilation line.Project supported by the National Nature Science Foundation of China.  相似文献

During February, 1981 and June, 1982 the gamma-ray and the hard X-ray spectrometers on the Hinotori satellite observed four gamma-ray bursts on 28 February, 21 July, 1981, 26 February and 13 March, 1982. These gamma-ray bursts were simultaneously observed by other satellites. The time histories and energy spectra are shown for these gamma-ray bursts, and the burst sizes (erg cm–2) are estimated. Two possible source locations for the burst of 21 July, 1981 are roughly determined from arrival time delays between two pairs of satellites, PVO-Hinotori and ISEE-3-Hinotori. The weak gamma-ray line peak structure around 1.8 MeV was observed for the burst of 13 March, 1982. The line could be interpreted in terms of gravitationally redshifted neutron capture line at 2.22 MeV.  相似文献

Blazars are the most violent steady/recurrent sources of high-energy gamma-ray emission in the known Universe. They are prominent emitters of electromagnetic radiation throughout the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The observable radiation most likely originates in a relativistic jet oriented at a small angle with respect to the line of sight. This review starts out with a general overview of the phenomenology of blazars, including results from a recent multiwavelength observing campaign on 3C279. Subsequently, issues of modeling broadband spectra will be discussed. Spectral information alone is not sufficient to distinguish between competing models and to constrain essential parameters, in particular related to the primary particle acceleration and radiation mechanisms in the jet. Short-term spectral variability information may help to break such model degeneracies, which will require snap-shot spectral information on intraday time scales, which may soon be achievable for many blazars even in the gamma-ray regime with the upcoming GLAST mission and current advances in Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope technology. In addition to pure leptonic and hadronic models of gamma-ray emission from blazars, leptonic/hadronic hybrid models are reviewed, and the recently developed hadronic synchrotron mirror model for TeV γ-ray flares which are not accompanied by simultaneous X-ray flares (“orphan TeV flares”) is revisited.

We show that the excellent optical and gamma-ray data available for GRB 080319B rule out the internal shock model for the prompt emission. The data instead point to a model in which the observed radiation was produced close to the deceleration radius  (∼1017 cm)  by a turbulent source with random Lorentz factors of ∼10 in the comoving frame. The optical radiation was produced by synchrotron emission from relativistic electrons, and the gamma-rays by inverse-Compton scattering of the synchrotron photons. The gamma-ray emission originated both in eddies and in an inter-eddy medium, whereas the optical radiation was mostly from the latter. Therefore, the gamma-ray emission was highly variable whereas the optical was much less variable. The model explains all the observed features in the prompt optical and gamma-ray data of GRB 080319B. We are unable to determine with confidence whether the energy of the explosion was carried outwards primarily by particles (kinetic energy) or magnetic fields. Consequently, we cannot tell whether the turbulent medium was located in the reverse shock (we can rule out the forward shock) or in a Poynting-dominated jet.  相似文献

We collect a sample of 51 Fermi-detected gamma-ray loud blazars with known radio Doppler factors and study properties of the Doppler factors of blazars at optical,X-ray and gamma-ray bands.A basic assumption is that the emission from the radio to gamma-ray bands of the blazars are produced by the nonthermal radiation of accelerated particles in a jet.Our results show that (1) the Doppler factors of blazars are a function of frequency, with the Doppler factor decreasing with frequency from the radio to X-ray ...  相似文献

We observed 3EG J1234-1318 with the CANGAROO-II telescope in March, 2002. This source is a steady unidentified EGRET gamma-ray source at high Galactic latitude which has been associated with a dynamically merging clusters of galaxies, and is therefore a candidate TeV source. TeV gamma-ray emission is also expected as a result of large-scale cosmological structure formation. We here report the resulting upper limit on the TeV gamma-ray emission from 3EG J1234-1318.
