Solar radio and microwave sources were observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) and the RATAN-600, providing high spatial resolution at 91 cm (VLA) and detailed spectral and polarization data at microwave wavelengths (1.7 to 20 cm - RATAN). The radio observations have been compared with images from the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) aboard theYohkoh satellite and with full-disk phoptospheric magnetic field data from the Kislovodsk Station of the Pulkovo Observatory. The VLA observations at 91 cm show fluctuating nonthermal noise storm sources in the middle corona. The active regions that were responsible for the noise storms generally had weaker microwave emission, fainter thermal soft X-ray emission, as well as less intense coronal magnetic fields than those associated with other active regions on the solar disk. The noise storms did, however, originate in active regions whose magnetic fields and radiation properties were evolving on timescales of days or less. We interpret these noise storms in terms of accelerated particles trapped in radiation belts above or near active regions, forming a decimetric coronal halo. The particles trapped in the radiation belts may be the source of other forms of nonthermal radio emission, while also providing a reservoir from which energetic particles may drain down into lower-lying magnetic structures.Presented at the CESRA-Workshop on Coronal Magnetic Energy Release at Caputh near Potsdam in May 1994.  相似文献

In this study we continue our investigation of the radio sources located above the neutral line of the radial magnetic field in solar active regions, i.e., the so-called neutral line associated sources (NLS). The nature of NLS is still far from being understood. To study it, we use the spectroscopic capabilities of the new broadband polarimetric facility of the RATAN-600 radio telescope. We study the radio spectra of NLS sources in several solar active regions over a wide range of variations of their sizes. We find the NLS radio emission fluxes to be related to the gradient of the quasi-longitudinal magnetic field in the photosphere. We estimate the vertical positions of NLS relative to the cyclotron radio sources. We find fine spectral features in the NLS emission, which confirm the presence of a current sheet in their sources. We associate the appreciable lack of polarization in such sources with their location near the tops of the coronal arches.  相似文献

This paper reviews the contrasting properties of radio and EUV/X-ray observations for the study of the solar atmosphere. The emphasis is placed on explaining the nature of radio observations to an EUV/X-ray audience. Radio emission is produced by mechanisms which are well-understood within classical physics. Bremsstrahlung tends to be dominant at low frequencies, while gyro-resonance emission from strong magnetic fields produces bright sources at higher frequencies. At most radio frequencies the images of the Sun are dominated almost everywhere by bremsstrahlung opacity, which may be optically thick or thin depending on circumstances. Where gyro-resonance sources are present they may be used as sensitive probes of the regions above active regions where magnetic field strengths exceed several hundred gauss, and this unique capability is one of the strengths of radio observations. Typically a gyro-resonance radio source shows the temperature on an optically thick surface of constant magnetic field within the corona. Since each radio frequency corresponds to a different magnetic field strength, the coronal structure can be `peeled away' by using different frequencies. The peculiarities of radio observing techniques are discussed and contrasted with EUV/X-ray techniques. Radio observations are strong at determining temperatures and coronal magnetic field strengths while EUV/X-ray observations better sense densities and reveal coronal magnetic field lines: in this way the two wavelength domains are nicely complementary.  相似文献

The Synthesis Radio Telescope at the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory is being used to make a long-term study of the relationship between sources of the slowly-varying component at 21-cm wavelength and the active regions with which they are associated. Although the arc-minute angular resolution of the radio telescope is insufficient to map individual active regions, the unique capability of this radio telescope to map the whole solar disc in a single operation makes it useful for identifying and measuring sources of the slowly-varying component, which at this wavelength are largely due to free–free thermal emission from plasma concentrations trapped in active region magnetic fields. The brightness temperatures of the emission are higher in large, complex active regions, suggesting the plasma slab producing the emission is thicker and/or denser in such regions. We find also that the relationship between the brightness temperature and the size and complexity of the host region is a function of the phase of the 10–13-year solar activity cycle.  相似文献

In the present paper we present the results of measurement of magnetic fields in some sunspots at different heights in the solar atmosphere, based on simultaneous optical and radio measurements. The optical measurements were made by traditional photographic spectral observations of Zeeman splitting in a number of spectral lines originating at different heights in the solar photosphere and chromosphere. Radio observations of the spectra and polarization of the sunspot - associated sources were made in the wavelength range of 2–4 cm using large reflector-type radio telescope RATAN-600. The magnetic field penetrating the hot regions of the solar atmosphere were found from the shortest wavelength of generation of thermal cyclotron emission (presumably in the third harmonic of electron gyrofrequency). For all the eight cases under consideration we have found that magnetic field first drops with height, increases from the photosphere to lower chromosphere, and then decreases again as we proceed to higher chromosphere and chromosphere-corona transition region. Radio measurements were found to be well correlated with optical measurements of magnetic fields for the same sunspot. An alternative interpretation implies that different lines used for magnetic field measurements refer to different locations on the solar surface. If this is the case, then the inversion in vertical gradients of magnetic fields may not exist above the sunspots. Possible sources of systematic and random errors are also discussed.  相似文献

The distribution of relative position angles between the integrated intrinsic polarization (perpendicular to the direction of the intrinsic magnetic field) and the major axis of an extragalactic radio source were studied for different types of radio sources. Data for 280 extragalactic radio sources were used and it was found that there are large differences in the relative orientation of different types of radio sources. The directions of the intrinsic integrated magnetic fields correlate with the major radio axes of more elongated radio sources (K > 2.5, where K is the ratio of lengths of the major and minor axes of the radio images) and for radio sources of type FR II, whereas for less elongated objects (K < 2.5) and for radio sources of type FR I the magnetic fields do not correlate at all with the radio axes. An alternative mechanism for the formation of a radio galaxy from relativistic plasma ejected from the central part of an optical galaxy and moving in its large-scale, dipole magnetic field may be a theoretical basis for classification with respect to the elongation parameter K of the radio image.  相似文献

We analysed multifrequency 2-dimensional maps of the solar corona obtained with the Nançay radioheliograph during two solar rotations in 1986. We discuss the emission of the quiet Sun, coronal holes and local sources and its association with chromospheric and coronal features as well as with large-scale magnetic fields. The brightness temperature of the quiet Sun was 5 to 5.5 × 105 K at 164 MHz and 4.5 to 5 × 105 K at 408 MHz. A coronal hole, also detected in the 10830 Å He i line, had a brightness temperature of 4.5 × 105 at 164 and 2.5 × 105 at 408 MHz. We give statistics of source brightness temperatures (on the average 8% above the background at 164 MHz and 14% at 408 MHz), as well as distributions in longitude and latitude. Although we found no significant center-to-limb effect in the brightness temperature, the sources were not visible far from the central meridian (apparently a refraction effect). The brightest sources at 164 MHz were near, but not directly above active regions and had characteristics of faint type I continua. At 408 MHz some sources were observed directly above active regions and one was unambiguously a type I continuum. The majority of the fainter sources showed no association with chromospheric features seen on H synoptic charts, including filaments. Most of them were detected at one frequency only. Sources identified at three frequencies (164, 327, and 408 MHz) were located in regions of enhanced large-scale magnetic field, some of them at the same location as decayed active regions visible one rotation before on synoptic H charts. Multifrequency sources are associated with maxima of the green line corona. The comparison with K-corona synoptic charts shows a striking association of the radio sources with dense coronal regions, associated with the coronal neutral sheet. Furthermore, we detected an enhanced brightness region which surrounds the local sources and is stable over at least one solar rotation. We call this feature a coronal plateau and we identify it with the radio counterpart of the coronal neutral sheet.  相似文献

Two-dimensional, high-resolution observations of about 30 moving type IV bursts allow us to compare the polarization structure of the radio sources high in the corona with the distribution of magnetic fields measured at the photospheric level. Left- and right-handed circularly polarized moving type IV bursts are associated with active regions dominated by magnetic fields of plus and minus polarity respectively. The result suggests that the polarity of magnetic fields within the type IV source which moves high in the corona ( 1R above the photosphere) is closely related to the polarity of local magnetic fields at the photosphere. The above relation between the sense of polarization and the polarity of magnetic field is contrary to what would be expected from the generally accepted synchroton hypothesis. One way of resolving this conflict is to postulate that the magnetic field within the radio source has the opposite polarity to that of the ambient magnetic fields.  相似文献

Earlier results concerning sympathetic flares - physically related flares occurring in different active regions practically in the same time - and time-correlated radio bursts are compared with magnetic situation in active regions with related flaring and with the history and dynamics of its development. We found observational evidence abou the reality of sympathetic flares, demonstrating also that active regions in which they appear are physically related through common dynamical elements in which the evolution of their magnetic fields goes parallel. Such a process may sometimes occupy a very large volume of the photosphere and we believe that it might be related to the large-scale convective motions.  相似文献

A number of authors claimed that radio sources above the neutral line of the magnetic field in solar active regions are due to non-thermal emission. This study shows that the thermal mechanism explains the radio emission from such sources. Models similar to those used for interpreting cyclotron lines were used in this study. Such models account for a steep decline in the spectrum at high frequencies and a low degree of polarization. The magnetic field between the two sunspots with an anti-parallel magnetic field has a lower gradient than the field above the sunspots. This, combined with the possibly high temperature in coronal loops connecting the sunspots, leads to the following conclusions. The optical thickness of the gyroresonance layers is increased and leads to more effective radiation at a harmonic number of 4 or 5. The lower gradient of the field between the sunspots also results in more rapid growth of emission intensity with increasing wavelength in this region than in the regions immediately above the sunspots. Additionally, the spatial averaging of the source structure due to the antenna beam pattern leads to a decrease in the degree of polarization in the region between the sunspots.  相似文献

The trajectories of 38 type III storms in the interplanetary medium have been deduced from ISEE-3 radio observations and extrapolated back to the Sun to determine the Carrington coordinates of their footpoints. The analysis assumes radial motion of the solar wind, and the trajectories are projected radially back toward the surface for the last few solar radii. To identify the storm sources, the footpoints were compared to a variety of solar features: to the large-scale neutral line at the base of the current sheet, to active regions, to the small-scale neutral lines and Hα filaments which trace out active regions, and to coronal holes. Most of the footpoints were found to lie near active regions, in agreement with metric storm locations. There is a weak correlation with Hα filaments, no apparent association with the current sheet, and an anticorrelation with coronal holes. There is a small excess of storms in the leading half of magnetic sectors.  相似文献

Magnetic fields are observed everywhere in the universe. In this review, we concentrate on the observational aspects of the magnetic fields of Galactic and extragalactic objects. Readers can follow the milestones in the observations of cosmic magnetic fields obtained from the most important tracers of magnetic fields, namely, the star-light polarization, the Zeeman effect, the rotation measures (RMs, hereafter) of extragalactic radio sources, the pulsar RMs, radio polarization observations, as well as the newly implemented sub-mm and mm polarization capabilities. The magnetic field of the Galaxy was first discovered in 1949 by optical polarization observations. The local magnetic fields within one or two kpc have been well delineated by starlight polarization data. The polarization observations of diffuse Galactic radio background emission in 1962 confirmed unequivocally the existence of a Galactic magnetic field. The bulk of the present information about the magnetic fields in the Galaxy comes from anal  相似文献

A sample of 36 S-component sources observed by the radio telescope RATAN-600 was compared with calculations of gyromagnetic emission and bremsstrahlung based on recent sunspot models. The diagnostic possibilities of the spectral distributions in the radio flux, the degree of polarization, and the source sizes for the estimation of magnetic scale heights and other source parameters were checked by different methods.Depending on the magnetic field structure, the observations show different types of polarization spectra. Most regular spectra and highest values of the degree of polarization were observed from sources above the leading part of the associated spot group. Magnetic scale heights were found to be intrinsically associated with the source size of the gyromagnetic emission. The flare production rate of active regions appears to be related to their S-component flux and magnetic scale heights.  相似文献

Solar mapping at 3.4 millimeter wavelength has shown the existence of various spatial structures in brightness distribution. The most prominent structure is presented by the local sources of the slowly varying component of the solar radio emission. Usually they coincide with active regions. Some sources have no corresponding optical counterparts. Using synoptic radio maps, latitudinal belts of enhanced brightness were detected at the north and south hemispheres. These belts seem to coincide with sunspot zones, but the enhanced emission exists independently of sunspot group appearance. Comparison of our maps with XUV images shows a noticeable resemblance. Sources above active regions and latitudinal belts of enhanced brightness are seen in both ranges as well as coronal holes.  相似文献

Network magnetic fields, ephemeral active regions, and intranetwork magnetic fields are illustrated and discussed in several contexts. First, they are presented in relation to the appearance and disappearance of magnetic flux. Second, their properties in common with all solar magnetic features are discussed. Third, their distinguishing characteristics are emphasized. Lastly, their interactions are illustrated.Network magnetic fields are no longer considered to be just the aged remnants of active regions. The network is the dynamic product of the merging and cancelling of intranetwork fields, ephemeral regions, and the remnants of active regions. Intranetwork fields are magnetic fields of mixed polarity that appear to originate continuously from localized source sites in between the network. The intranetwork magnetic fields are characterized by flow of successive fragments in approximately radial patterns away from their apparent source sites and by the relative weakness of their magnetic fields. Ephemeral active regions are small, new bipoles that grow as a unit or a succession of bipolar units and whose poles move in opposite directions from their apparent site of origin. Large ephemeral regions are not distinguishable from small active regions.Solar Cycle Workshop Paper.  相似文献

Magnetic fields dominate most solar activities, there exist direct relations between solar flare and the distributions of magnetic field, and also its corresponding magnetic energy. In this paper, the statistical results about the relationships between the spatial magnetic field and solar flare are given basing on vector magnetic field observed by the Solar Magnetic Field Telescope (SMFT) at Huairou Solar Observing Station (HSOS). The spatial magnetic fields are obtained by extrapolated photosphere vector magnetic field observed by SMFT. There are 23 active regions with flare eruption are chosen as data samples, which were observed from 1997 to 2007. The results are as follows: 1. Magnetic field lines become lower after flare for 16 (69 %) active regions; 2. The free energy are decreased after flare for 17 (74 %) active regions. It can conclude that for most active regions the changes of magnetic field after solar flare re coincident with the previous observations and studies.  相似文献

We present a detailed analysis of the magnetic topology of AR 2776 together with Hα UV, X-rays, and radio observations of the November 5, 1980 flares in order to understand the role of the active region large-scale topology on the flare process. As at present the coronal magnetic field is modeled by an ensemble of sub-photospheric sources whose positions and intensities are deduced from a least-square fit between the computed and observed longitudinal magnetic fields. Charges and dipole representations are shown to lead to similar modeling of the magnetic topology provided that the number of sources is great enough. However, for AR 2776, departure from a potential field has to be taken into account, therefore a linear force-free field extrapolation is used. The locations of the four bright off-band Hα kernels in quadrupolar active regions have been studied previously. In this new study the active region is bipolar and shows a two-ribbon structure. We show that these two ribbons are a consequence of the bipolar photospheric field (the four kernels of quadrupolar regions merge into two bipolar regions). The two ribbons are found to be located at the intersection of the separatrices with the chromosphere when the shear, deduced from the fibril direction, is taken into account. This study supports the hypothesis that magnetic energy is stored in field-aligned currents and released by magnetic reconnection at the location of the separator, before being transported along field lines to the chromospheric level. It is also possible that part of the magnetic energy could be stored and released on the separatrices. Our study shows that meeting just one of two conditions- the presence of intense coronal currents or of a separator in a magnetic field configuration - is not sufficient for flaring. In order to release the stored energy, the coronal currents need either to be formed along the separatrices or to be transported towards the separator or separatrices. The location of the observed photospheric current concentrations on the computed separatrices supports this view. Member of the Carrera del Investigador Científico, CONICET.  相似文献

Using microwave observations made with the Nobeyama radioheliograph (=1.76 cm), we have studied temporal variations of sunspot-associated sources in the circularly polarized component. For all three cases of well-developed and rather stable sunspots we found nearly harmonic oscillations with periods in a range of 120–220 s. In one case of an unstable and quickly devolving active region, the fluctuations appear to be irregular with no dominant period. Sunspot-associated solar radio sources are known to be generated by cyclotron radiation of thermal electrons in magnetic tubes of sunspots at the level of the lower solar corona or chromosphere–corona transition region (CCTR). At the wavelength of 1.76 cm, the polarized emission arises in a layer where the magnetic field is B=2000 G (assuming the emission generated at the third harmonic of electron gyrofrequency). We suggest that the observed effect is a manifestation of the well-known 3-min oscillations observed in the chromosphere and photosphere above sunspots. The observed effects are believed to be a result of resonance oscillation of MHD waves inside a magnetic tube. Radio observations of this phenomenon open a new tool for studying regions of reflection of MHD waves near CCTR level. The method is very sensitive both to the height of the CCTR and magnetic fields above sunspots. Thus, detection of oscillations of the height of the transition region even with an amplitude of a few km are possible. The use of a spectrum of one of the observed sources obtained with the radio telescope RATAN-600 allows us to conclude that oscillations in magnetic field strength of about 4 G could be responsible for the effect and are reliably registered. The appearance of the famous 5-min oscillations in the solar atmosphere was also registered in some spectra of radio oscillations.  相似文献

The paper presents a new method of the estimation of spatial variations of the magnetic field and superthermal electron distribution in solar cm-radio burst sources. The method is based on minimization of the difference between the theoretical and observed radio fluxes and on the analysis of several burst spectra recorded in different moments of time. Several solar cm-radio bursts are analyzed by this method. It is found that the measure of the spatial variations of the superthermal electron distribution in the radio source is always larger than that for the magnetic field.  相似文献

Observations of the strength and spatial distribution of vector magnetic fields in active regions have revealed several fundamental properties of the twist of their magnetic fields. First, the handedness of this twist obeys a hemispheric rule: left-handed in the northern hemisphere, right-handed in the southern. Second, the rule is weak; active regions often disobey it. It is statistically valid only in a large ensemble. Third, the rule itself, and the amplitude of the scatter about the rule, are quantitatively consistent with twisting of fields by turbulence as flux tubes buoy up through the convection zone. Fourth, there is considerable spatial variation of twist within active regions. However, relaxation to a linear force-free state, which has been documented amply in laboratory plasmas, is not observed.  相似文献
