The VIVACE converter enhances VIV to harness horizontal hydrokinetic energy of water flows. High-Reynolds and high-damping are required to operate VIVACE in ocean/river currents. Scarce VIV data exist in that parametric subspace. Tests are performed for Reynolds number 40,000<Re<120,000 and damping 0<ζ<0.16 in the Low Turbulence Free Surface Water Channel of the Marine Renewable Energy Laboratory at the University of Michigan. Extensive testing was made possible by building a virtual damper-spring apparatus, which has been system identified and verified with real damper-spring tests. Thus, damping and stiffness are adjusted by software rather than hardware. From the VIV tests, the optimal damping for energy harnessing was found for velocity 0.40 m/s<U<1.10 m/s using spring stiffness 400 N/m<k<1800 N/m. Thus, the VIVACE converter power envelope is developed. The following experimental observations are made: (1) In the high-lift TrSL3 and TrBL0 flow regimes, high-amplitude, high-damping VIV is maintained. (2) VIV strongly depends on Reynolds. (3) The amplitude ratio (A/D) increases with Reynolds number within the upper branch of the VIV synchronization range. (4) In TrSL3/TrBL0, A/D of 1.78 was achieved for a smooth cylinder routinely in low damping. (5) Power density of 98.2 W/m3 at 1.03 m/s (2 knots) is achieved including space between cylinders.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the accuracy, stability and efficiency of the overset grid approach coupled with the RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) model via the benchmark computations of flows around a stationary smooth circular cylinder. Two dimensional numerical results are presented within a wide range of Reynolds numbers (6.31 × 104  7.57 × 105) including the critical flow regime. All the simulations are carried out using the RANS solver pimpleFoam provided by OpenFOAM, an open source CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) toolkit. Firstly, a grid convergence study is performed. The results of the time-averaged drag and lift force coefficients, root-mean square value of lift force coefficient and Strouhal number (St number) are then compared with the experimental data. The velocity, vorticity fields and pressure distribution are also given. One main conclusion is that the numerical solutions in regard to a fixed cylinderare not deteriorated due to the implementation of the overset grid. Furthermore, it can be an appealing approach to facilitate simulations of Vortex Induced Vibrations (VIV), which involves grid deformation. The present study is a good start to implement the overset grid to solve VIV problems in the future.  相似文献

A series of flow induced vibration (FIV) experiments for an equilateral triangle prism elastically mounted in a water channel are performed with different system stiffness at constant damping and mass. An amplitude variation coefficient is proposed to describe FIV stationarity in the present study. The FIV of the prism can be divided into three primary regions based on the amplitude and frequency responses, which are the vortex induced vibration (VIV) branch, the transition branch from VIV to galloping, and the galloping branch. The transition branch occurs at the reduced velocity in the range of 7.8 < Ur = U/(fn,air·D) < 10.4, accompanied with a relatively rapid increase in amplitude and a precipitous drop in frequency and vibration stationarity. In addition, the reduced velocity where the transition region is initiated is independent of the system stiffness. The maximum amplitude reaches 3.17 D in the galloping branch. The ratio of the response frequency to the natural frequency of the prism in air remains locked to approximately 0.65 throughout the fully developed galloping branch. Large amplitude responses in an infinite range of flow velocities, excellent vibration stationarity and steady vibration frequencies, which are characteristics of the galloping of the prism, have a positive impact on improving energy conversion.  相似文献

Experimental results are presented in the paper of two elastically supported rigid circular cylinders subjected to steady flows in a flume. The two cylinders were initially placed at various tandem and staggered positions with one in the wake of the other when subject to the steady flows. The in-line centre-to-centre distance varied from 2 to 5 diameters whilst the cross-flow distance from 0 to 2 diameters. The nominal Reynolds numbers were in the sub-critical regime and ranged from 1.12 × 104 to 5.52 × 104, and the nominal reduced velocities from 1.78 to 8.77. The damping ratio of the test set-up is low at 0.003 which gives a combined mass-damping parameter of 0.0046. Both the cylinders were free to respond in both the in-line and the cross-flow directions. The cylinder motion was measured simultaneously with the hydrodynamic loading in the two directions. It was found that the motion trajectories of the downstream cylinder show qualitative difference depending upon whether it is in tandem with the upstream cylinder or in the wake with a transverse offset. The VIV response of the downstream cylinder is dependent upon the reduced velocity of the upstream cylinder and its own reduced velocity based upon the actual mean wake velocity. The drag amplification of the downstream cylinder in the wake appears to be fundamentally different from that of a single VIV cylinder in isolation. Furthermore, unlike the two fixed cylinders in cross flow, the downstream cylinder undergoing VIV no longer experiences a marked non-zero mean lift. The upstream cylinder is largely unaffected by the downstream cylinder when the initial spacing is greater than 3 diameters. On the other hand, the motion response of and the fluid loading on the downstream cylinder are strongly influenced by the upstream cylinder in the spacing range tested.  相似文献

Experiments employing a low-mass-damping cylinder have been conducted to determine the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) response of four suppressors of the flexible-shroud family. The VIV suppressors were inspired in the concept of the Ventilated Trousers (VT), a flexible shroud composed of a flexible net fitted with three-dimensional bobbins. Reynolds number varied between 5 × 103 and 25 × 103, while reduced velocity varied from 2 to 26. The VIV dynamic response showed that the VT suppressed the peak amplitude of vibration down to 40% of that of a bare cylinder. Other flexible shrouds also achieved suppression, but not as efficiently. Drag was reduced during the VIV synchronization range, but remained above the value for a bare static cylinder thereafter. Spectral analysis of displacement and lift revealed that, depending on the geometry and distribution of the bobbins, the flexible shroud can develop an unstable behavior, capturing energy from the wake and sustaining vibrations for higher reduced velocities. PIV measurements of the wake revealed that the entrainment flow through the mesh is necessary to extend the vortex-formation length of the wake; this mechanism only occurs for the VT mesh.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the variation in the tension and the distribution of drag force coefficients along flexible risers under vortex-induced vibration (VIV) in a uniform flow for Reynolds numbers (Re) up to 2.2×105. The results show that the mean tension is proportional to the square of the incoming current speed, and the tension coefficient of a flexible riser undergoing VIV can be up to 12. The mean drag force is uniformly and symmetrically distributed along the axes of the risers undergoing VIV. The corresponding drag coefficient can vary between 1.6 and 2.4 but is not a constant value of 1.2, as it is for a fixed cylinder in the absence of VIV. These experimental results are used to develop a new empirical prediction model to estimate the drag force coefficient for flexible risers undergoing VIV for Reynolds number on the order of 105, which accounts for the effects of the incoming current speed, the VIV dominant modal number and the frequency.  相似文献

Experimental studies were carried out to investigate the response features of an inclined flexible bare cylinder as well as a straked cylinder in a towing tank, with the main purpose of further improving the understanding of the effect of yaw angle on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) suppression. Four yaw angles (a = 0°, 15°, 30°, 45°), which is defined as the angle between the cylinder axis and the plane orthogonal to the oncoming fluid flow, were tested. The cylinder model was towed along the tank to generate a uniform fluid flow. The towing velocity was in the range of 0.05–1.0 m/s with an interval of 0.05 m/s. The corresponding Reynolds number ranged from 800 to 16000. The strakes selected for the experiments had a pitch of 17.5D and a height of 0.25D, which is generally considered as the most effective configuration for VIV suppression of a flexible cylinder in water. The experimental results indicate that VIV suppression effectiveness of the inclined flexible straked cylinder is closely related to the yaw angle. The displacement amplitudes are significantly suppressed in both cross-flow (CF) and in-line (IL) directions at a = 0°. However, with increasing yaw angle, the suppression efficiencies of the CF and IL displacement amplitudes gradually decrease. In addition, the CF dominant frequencies of the straked cylinder obviously deviate from those of the bare cylinder at a = 0° and 15°. This deviation is substantially alleviated with increasing yaw angle. The IL dominant frequencies show less dependency on the yaw angle. Similar trends are also observed on the dominant modes of vibration and the mean drag coefficients.  相似文献

The response of an oscillating circular cylinder at the wake of an upstream fixed circular cylinder was classified by different researchers as galloping, wake induced galloping or wake induced vibration. Furthermore it is already known that a sharp edge square cylinder would undergo galloping if it is subjected to uniform flow. In this study the influence of the wake of a fixed circular cylinder on the response of a downstream square cylinder at different spacing ratios (S/D = 4, 8, 11) is experimentally investigated. The subject appears not to have received previous attention. The lateral displacements, lift forces and the pressure data from gauges mounted in the wake of the oscillating cylinder are recorded and analyzed. The single degree of freedom vibrating system has a low mass-damping parameter and the Reynolds number ranges from 7.7 × 102 to 3.7 × 104.In contrast to that for two circular cylinders in tandem arrangement, the freely mounted downstream square cylinder displays a VIV type of response at all spacing ratios tested. There is no sign of galloping or wake induced galloping with the square cylinder. With increase at the spacing ratio the cross-flow oscillations decrease. It is shown that the vortices arriving from the upstream fixed circular cylinder play a major role on the shedding mechanism behind the downstream square cylinder and cause the square cylinder to shed vortices with frequencies above Strouhal frequency of the fixed square cylinder (St = 0.13). The VIV type of oscillations in the downstream square cylinder is most probably caused by the vortices newly generated behind the square cylinder.  相似文献

Passive Turbulence Control (PTC) in the form of selectively distributed surface roughness is used to alter Flow Induced Motion (FIM) of a circular cylinder in a steady flow. The objective is to enhance FIM's synchronization range and amplitude, thus maximizing conversion of hydrokinetic energy into mechanical energy by oscillator in vortex-induced vibration and/or galloping. Through additional viscous damping, mechanical energy is converted to electrical harnessing clean and renewable energy from ocean/river currents. High Reynolds numbers (Re) are required to reach the high-lift TrSL3 (Transition-Shear-Layer-3) flow regime. PTC trips flow separation and energizes the boundary layer, thus inducing higher vorticity and consequently lift. Roughness location, surface coverage, and size are studied using systematic model tests with broad-field laser visualization at 3.0×104<Re<1.2×105 in the low-turbulence free-surface water-channel of the Marine Renewable Energy Laboratory of the University of Michigan. Test results show that 16° roughness coverage is effective in the range (10°-80°) inducing reduced vortex-induced vibration (VIV), enhanced VIV, or galloping. Range of synchronization may increase or decrease, galloping amplitude of oscillation reaches three diameters; wake structures change dramatically reaching up to ten vortices per cycle. Conversion of hydrokinetic energy to mechanical is enhanced strongly with proper PTC.  相似文献

Measurements are presented of the effects of corner radius on the hydrodynamic forces experienced by cylindrical bluff bodies in oscillatory flow over the Keulegan Carpenter number range from 1 to 100. The range of Reynolds number covered is from 200 to 2 × 104 and two basic cross-sectional shapes, namely a square and a diamond, were used in the investigation. Drag coefficients in oscillatory flow are found to be more sensitive to corner radius than in steady flow. At a fixed Keulegan Carpenter number the drag coefficient of a diamond section decreases with increasing corner radius and the reduction is more marked at low Keulegan Carpenter numbers. The drag of a square section does not follow a consistent trend with corner radius and for high Keulegan Carpenter numbers the rounded square with a corner radius of 0.265D (where D is the width of the model normal to the flow) can have a drag coefficient equal to half the value for a circular cylinder.  相似文献

The vortex shedding from near-bed piggyback pipelines in a steady flow has been investigated experimentally in a large water flume. A specially arranged PIV system with upward-illumination of pulsed laser arrays from the flume bottom was employed for the flow visualization and quantitative measurement of the lee-wake flow in a sub-critical regime around the piggyback pipelines in the proximity of a plane boundary. Based on dimensional analyses, a dimensionless maximum swirling strength (Wm) is used for analyzing the vortex shedding intensity and its frequency. Time-averaged swirling strength analyses indicate that the lee-wake patterns for the near-bed piggyback pipelines are dependent on the configuration factors, including the gap-to-diameter ratio (e/D), the spacing-to-diameter ratio (G/D), and the diameter ratio of two pipes (d/D), etc. The swirling strength in the lee-wake is obviously asymmetric for piggyback pipelines with bed proximity. For the fixed values of G/D and d/D, the maximum swirling strength decreases with the decrease of e/D. Moreover, for the examined G/D range (0 ≤ G/D ≤ 0.5), minimum values of Wm and corresponding VIV amplitude for the piggyback pipelines are evidently within the same range of spacing-to-diameter ratio G/D ≈ 0.05–0.20.  相似文献

Laminar flow past a circular cylinder with 3 small control rods is investigated by numerical simulation. This study is concerned with the suppression efficacy of vortex induced vibration by small control rods located around a main cylinder. The effects of the attack angle and rod-to-cylinder gap ratio on the hydrodynamics and vibration responses of the main cylinder are investigated. The attack angle of α = 45° is performed as the critical angle for VIV suppression of 3 control rods. The 3 control rods have no effect on VIV suppression when the attack angle is less than the critical angle. The 3 control rods have an excellent VIV suppression efficacy when the attack angle is larger than the critical angle. The transverse vibration frequency of the cylinder with 3 control rods is less than that for an isolated cylinder for all the configurations. The numerical results for the configurations of α = 45° & 60°, G/D = 0.6–1.2 show excellent suppression efficient among the cases investigated in this study. The best suppression efficient is found at α = 45°, G/D = 0.9 for 3 control rods. 2 rods in behind of the main cylinder perform more efficient than that of 1 rod in front for VIV suppression as the gap ratio of G/D less than 1.0.  相似文献

Flow past a circular cylinder with multiple small control rods is studied by numerical simulation for ReD ranging from 1161.3 to 6387.1. The Reynolds-Averaged-Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations and shear stress transport (SST) k  ω turbulence model are used to calculate the vortex field, while a fourth-order Runge–Kutta method is employed for evaluating the structure dynamics of the cylinder group. Comparisons with experimental results demonstrate the validation of this method. This study is concerned with the vortex induced vibration (VIV) suppression efficacy of small control rods placed around a main cylinder. The effects of control rod number, diameter ratio, spacing ratio and Reynolds number on the hydrodynamics and vibration responses of the main cylinder are investigated. The reduced percents of in-line and cross-flow amplitudes and the increased percents of the whole cross-sectional area of cylinders and the drag coefficient are used to give a comprehensive evaluation. Results of simulation indicate that placing small rods with appropriate number at appropriate locations can achieve good suppression effectiveness at a wide range of Reynolds number. The numerical result for the case with nine control rods, diameter ratio of 0.15 and spacing ratio of 0.6 shows the best suppression effect among the cases investigated in this study.  相似文献

A device/system VCK is built to replace the physical damper/springs of the VIVACE Converter with virtual elements. VIVACE harnesses hydrokinetic energy of currents by converting mechanical energy of cylinders in Vortex Induced Vibrations (VIV) into electricity. VCK enables conducting high number of model tests rapidly as damping/springs are set by software rather than hardware. VCK consists of a cylinder, a belt–pulley transmission, a motor/generator, and a controller. The controller provides a damper–spring force feedback using displacement/velocity measurements, thus introducing no artificial force–displacement phase lag, which biases energy conversion. Damping is nonlinear, particularly away from the system natural frequency, and affects modeling near the VIV synchronization ends. System identification (SI) in air reveals nonlinear viscous damping, static and dynamic friction. Hysteresis, occurring in the zero velocity limit, is modeled by a nonlinear dynamic damping model Linear Autoregression with Nonlinear Static model (LARNOS). SI performed in air is verified using monochromatic excitation in air and VIV tests in water using physical damper and springs. A resistor bank added to the device provides an integrated VCK/Power Take-Off (PTO) system. VIV testing is performed in the Low Turbulence Free Surface Water Channel of the University of Michigan at 40,000<Re<120,000 and damping 0<ζ<0.16.  相似文献

The experimental studies on flow-induced vibrations(FIV) reduction of two side-by-side flexible cylinders inclined at 45° by using the helical strakes were carried out in a towing tank. The main aim of the experiment is to check whether the helical strakes with a pitch of 17.5 D and a height of 0.25 D, which is considered as the most effective vibration suppression device for the isolated cylinder undergoing vortex-shedding, still perform very well to reduce FIV of two inclined flexible cylinders in a side-by-side arrangement. The vibration of two identical inclined cylinders with a mass ratio of 1.90 and an aspect ratio of 350 was tested in the experiment. The center-to-center distance between the two cylinders was 3.0 D. The uniform flow was simulated by towing the cylinder models along the tank. The towing velocity varied from 0.05 to 1.0 m/s with an interval of 0.05 m/s. The maximum Reynolds number can be up to 1.6×104. Three cases were experimentally studied in this paper, including two side-by-side inclined smooth cylinders, only one smooth cylinder fitted with helical strakes in the two side-by-side inclined cylinders system and both two cylinders attached with helical strakes. The variations of displacement amplitude, dominant frequency, FIV suppression efficiency and dominant mode for the two side-by-side inclined cylinders with reduced velocity were shown and discussed.  相似文献

The multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) sailing in a specific configuration can reduce resistance if properly using the hydrodynamic interactions. This paper investigated the resistance characteristics of a multi-AUV system with both experimental and numerical approaches. A center-beam-support bar structure was designed to conduct the experiment. Validation of our numerical method was carried out by comparing with the experimental data. Parametric studies were then performed on the distance, the speed and the number of AUVs. The numerical results showed that SST-transition model is more suitable for simulating the multi-AUV system at Reynolds numbers (Re) ranging from 2.46 × 106 to 6.69 × 106. At Re = 6.14 × 106, the largest reduction of resistance can be 35.14% at d/L = 0. In the meantime, there appears some undesirable interference area between d/L = 0.042 and d/L = 0.063 where the total resistance of the fleet increases sharply. Apart from that, higher reduction of resistance can be expected with the increase of the speed and the number of AUVs.  相似文献

Stoichiometry among bioactive trace metals in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The distribution of Al, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb in seawater was investigated in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas of the western Arctic Ocean in September 2000. The unfiltered and filtered seawater samples were used for determination of total dissolvable metal (TDM) and dissolved metal (DM), respectively. The concentration of labile particulate metal (LPM) was estimated with the difference between that of TDM and DM. The concentrations of TDAl, TDMn, TDFe, TDCo and TDPb varied substantially in the study area. The high concentrations occurred at stations near the Bering Strait, in the Mackenzie delta, and above reductive sediments on the shelf and slope. These elements were mostly dominated by labile particulate species, such as Fe?CMn oxides and species adsorbed on terrestrial clay. DCo was correlated with DMn over the study area (r?=?0.78, n?=?135), and the slope of the regression line was 27 times higher at a pelagic station than at a shelf station. TDNi, TDCu, TDZn and TDCd showed relatively small variations and were generally dominated by dissolved species. There was a moderate correlation between DCd and phosphate for all samples (r?=?0.79), whereas there were no significant correlation between the other DMs and nutrients. TDNi and TDCu showed a remarkable linearity for most stations except those near the Bering Strait (R 2?=?0.95, n?=?126). These results suggest that biogeochemical cycling including uptake by phytoplankton and remineralization from settling particles has only minor control over the distribution of trace metals in this area. Using the present data, the annual input of bioactive trace metals form the Bering Strait and the Mackenzie River was estimated. Also, the trace metal compositions of major water masses were evaluated. The dissolved elemental ratio was P:Al:Mn:Fe:Co:Ni:Cu:Zn:Cd?=?1:1.2?×?10?2:4.4?×?10?4:1.4?×?10?3:3.7?×?10?5:3.7?×?10?3:1.4?×?10?3:4.5?×?10?3:2.2?×?10?4 for Canada Basin deep water (CBDW). This ratio was significantly different from that for Pacific deep water and Bering Sea water, suggesting substantial modification of the trace metal compositions of seawater in the study area.  相似文献

Sea water samples, still hot from volcanic emanations were taken in a bay of Nishinoshima-Shintô Island just after volcanic activity had ceased and were analysed for borate-B, fluoride-F and bromide-Br. The hot water is considered to be formed by the conservative mixing of volcanic emanations with sea water, and the emanations containedCl, B, F andBr in the ratio of 1∶1.84×10?3∶0.474×10?3∶6.47×10?3 by weight. RatiosB/Cl andF/Cl can be used as effective measures of the contribution of volcanic emanations to sea water.  相似文献

A three-dimensional numerical model is established to simulate the turbulent oscillatory boundary layer over a fixed and rough bed composed by randomly arrayed solid spheres based on the lattice Boltzmann method and the large eddy simulation model. The equivalent roughness height, the location of the theoretical bed and the time variation of the friction velocity are investigated using the log-fit method. The time series of turbulent intensity and Reynolds stress are also investigated. The equivalent roughness height of cases with Reynolds numbers of 1×10~4–6×10~4 is approximately 2.81 d(grain size). The time variation of the friction velocity in an oscillatory cycle exhibits sinusoidal-like behavior. The friction factor depends on the relative roughness in the rough turbulent regime, and the pattern of solid particles arrayed as the rough bed in the numerical simulations has no obvious effect on the friction factor.  相似文献
