Abstract

Trimetrogon air surveys have been used extensively in the United States and Canada but seem to have had less favour on this side of the Atlantic in spite of the fact that large areas over here were photographed in this way during the last war. The Sudan is a very large country, but not a rich one; and up to the present it has not been able to undertake its own aerial photography. The gift of a very large number of American trimetrogon photographs covering half the country was therefore very welcome, and it seemed worth our while to see what could be done with them in spite of the known disadvantages of this type of photography for anything but small scale mapping. The methods of planimetric mapping from these photographs developed in the United States were expressly designed to be as simple as possible and to be capable of division into a number of easy tasks which could be performed by any educated person after a short course of training. Nevertheless we felt that they could be simplified a great deal more if the problem was approached from a different angle, particularly in view of the very high standard of flying which was apparent in the photographs covering the Sudan.

Abstract

During the winter of 1952–53 I was engaged in the work of a large scale survey of a small area at the point where the Blue Nile or Great Abbai flows out of Lake Tana in Ethiopia for Messrs. J. Seymour Harris and Partners who were reporting to H.I.M. Government of Ethiopia on the suitability of the area as the site of a proposed new town. In view of the uncertainty attaching to the various heights attributed to the lake it was considered desirable to attempt a fresh determination, although this aspect had little priority in its claims on the time of the survey party. Although, in the outcome, all that was possible was a conventional reduction of a series of aneroid readings, the subject may possess some general interest.

Abstract

Since 1899 cadastral mapping in the Sudan has been concentrated along the banks of the Nile from the Egyptian frontier to latitude 13°N., in the towns, and in the area of the Gezira, south of Khartoum, where cotton has been developed. These surveys were controlled by theodolite and steel tape either in the form of traverses or rectangulation. The early triangulation was used mainly to control topographical surveys, for it was essential to cover the whole country as rapidly as possible with a series of maps on scale 1: 250,000. As a consequence much of this early triangulation is of a relatively low order of accuracy, indifferently marked on the ground, and unfit for inclusion in a framework for medium and large scale mapping.

Ground water prospecting in hard rock areas of Uttar Pradesh is quite difficult, owing to the geological and geomorphic controls of sub-surface strata on the occurrence and movement of ground water resources, and, therefore, it requires systematic investigations, mainly with the aid of remotely sensed and data, which undoubtedly provide realistic information on the hydrogeological conditions, geomorphologic features, drainage patterns etc. of any rocky area. In this paper, an endeavour has been made to locate ground water possibilities in the drought-affected, rocky terrain of the southern Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh, covering part of block Muirpur which is mainly characterised by the varied geological formations, including Archean complex, pre-Vindhyan matasediments and Gondwana formation, through the application of air photointerpretation technique, primarily based on the geologic/geomorphologic approach. The hydro-investigation in the area was carried out using panchromatic aerial photos of 1∶60,000 scale, chiefly to identify the drainage patterns, major geomorphic geo structural and lithological units; as these may control the ground water regime of the area, Further. the present study was also ably supported with limited field survey and hydrogeological data, for achieving reliable results.

Abstract

Crabs! Thousands of bright red crabs on a white foreshore; clinging black mud in tidal creeks with an overhanging tangle of tropical forest. These dominate one's memories of the Irrawaddy Delta in 1924. The Forest Department of Burma is the custodian of some 1,000 square miles of valuable forest reserves in the delta of this great river. The survey and production of “Forest” maps of this area was long overdue, postponed by reason of the immense expense and difficulty of a ground survey. Air survey, developed during the First World War, was ideally suited to this type of country but was still in its infancy, so that prolonged negotiations were necessary to persuade the Government of Burma to risk £25,000 on what appeared to them a doubtful proposition, as this was one of the first of the peace-time air surveys to be undertaken. Eventually, in July 1923 the contract was signed. Ronald Kemp, the first Chief Inspector of Civil Aircraft in India, gave up that post and formed an air survey company to carry out the photography as the first of his many survey contracts in India and Burma; I was in charge of the ground work and subsequent mapping.

Abstract

1. In the Sudan, as in Egypt, the greater part of the detailed survey control required for the cadastral mapping of the cultivated land beside the Nile has been in the form of traverse. This land is very flat and partly covered by crops at all times of the year, so that normal triangulation presents many difficulties, while there are many roads and canal banks which form natural routes for traverse. Nevertheless, the traversing is often slow because of the difficulty of carrying accurate measurements and lines of sight across ground made uneven by subsidiary irrigation canals, and in many cases encumbered by houses and date palms or other trees. Moreover a certain amount of triangulation is necessary to tie the surveys of the two banks together and to connect islands to the banks.

Abstract

In the memoir of the late Capt. G. T. McCaw which appeared in the January number of this Review (vii, 47,2), reference was made to the part which the late Sir David Gill played in the origin of the work on the survey of the Arc of the 30th Meridian in Africa. This year is the centenary of Gill's birth, as he was born in June 1843, and it is therefore timely to give some account of his work during his long term of office as Her Majesty's Astronomer at the Cape which resulted inthe inception and completion of the Geodetic Survey of South Africa and the survey of the Arc to the southern shores of Lake Tanganyika. He died on 24th January 1914.

Abstract

Repercussions to Failure (1883–96).—So far we have only had occasion to consider the primary fiscal objective of the abandoned cadastral survey; but during the decade devoted to it (1879–88) other public activities had been developing which were no less dependent upon detailed maps for their effective and equitable operation. Pre-eminent among these was the irrigation service. During the previous part of the century various spasmodic efforts to construct general maps of the country had produced little more than a series of conventional diagrams, on scales of I : 100,000, or 200,000, depicting the approximate positions of the main waterways and villages throughout the Delta and Valley against a blank background. But it was upon knowledge of at least the broad pattern of cultivation, waste and marsh, of surface level and incline, throughout the countryside, that the satisfactory planning and operation of the interrelated system of supply and drainage channels depended; while the only regular means of accumulating this knowledge had been the abortive survey. For crude and unreliable as its work was and useless for its intended purpose, that survey had been providing for the first time village by village in important districts an interpretable picture of these broad effects. The Irrigation Service did its best to fill the gap by setting up a survey section to prepare a “hydrographic map” of Lower Egypt to meet its own requirements. The staff were mainly drawn from the disbanded cadastral survey and the methods used are reported to have been essentially the same; but the simpler character of the work evidently fostered certain changes. As the network of property boundaries was ignored the map scale was reduced of 1 : 10,000 and the plane table became the principal instrument of detail survey; and since villages were no longer working units continuous map sheet series were adopted for each province. This accentuated the need for a common basic framework; but the defects of such triangulation as existed appear, however, to have been accepted and extended, some of the more obvious gaps being patched with traverse. So the detail must have been subjected to a good deal of Procrustean treatment. Nevertheless, supplemented where necessary by lines of levelling, the work constituted an indispensable reconnaissance series for irrigation.

Abstract

Early in 1902 I accepted with some misgivings the post of Instructor in Surveying at the School of Military Engineering, Chatham, in succession to Major A. C. MacDonnell. I had hardly joined at Chatham when Sir Thomas Holdich offered me the post of second in command of the Chile-Argentina Boundary Commission. However, my new chief, the Commandant, would not let me go, so I settled down to a few years of very pleasant work at Chatham. The first thing to do was to introduce a correct method of computing the geographical coordinates of the trigonometrical stations of a topographical survey, a matter over which my predecessor had suffered a rebuff. Now, however, the War Office personnel had changed; no opposition arose, and the thing was done.

Abstract

1. An air-photo survey of part of Southern Palestine was carried out in 1938, both field-work and plotting being executed by the same surveyor, a comparative newcomer to this type of work, who therefore equipped himself with Lieut Salt's valuable book (Professional Papers of the Air Survey Committee, no. 8, 1933) for guidance. The area covered was very broken barren country and the contours became the principal features of the map, so that a great many spot-heights were necessary and certain deviations in detail from the routine laid down in the Paper suggested themselves.

Abstract

In the survey world of Northern Rhodesia the most notable event in 1931 (apart, of course, from the birth of this Review) has been the completion of the aerial survey contracts undertaken for the Government by the Aircraft Operating Company. The results have justified expectations particularly with regard to the mapping of 63,000 square miles of the Territory on a scale of 1/250,000. Used in conjunction with the information obtained by ground methods by the Mining Companies, who have kindly consented to put their information at our disposal, a really reliable detailed map of a considerable portion of the Territory should be obtained. The mosaics of the six principal townships are also proving of value and contain a wealth of detail which would be difficult to obtain so accurately by ground survey except at great expense. On the other hand it is obvious that it would be a costly business involving a very large amount of ground control to prepare a closely contoured plan such as is required for detail purposes in connection with township lay-outs.

Abstract

This study examined the complementarity of radar and optical data for feature identification. Spaceborne radar and Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM ) multispectral data sets were assessed independently and in combination to classify a site near Wad Medani, Sudan. Radar processing procedures included speckle reduction, texture extraction and post‐processing smoothing. Relative accuracy of the resultant classifications was established by comparison to ground truth information derived from field visitation. Neither speckle filtering nor post‐classification smoothing were improvements over the poor results obtained with the unfiltered, original radar data. Texture measures were significant improvements over the original data (20 percent overall accuracy increase) and several, but not all, individual classes had excellent results. Landsat TM had good overall results (80 percent correct) but considerable spectral confusion between urban and bare soil. Combination of radar with Landsat TM greatly improved results, achieving near perfect classification of all individual classes. The systematic strategy of this study, determination of the best individual method before introducing the next procedure, was effective in managing a complex set of analysis possibilities.

ABSTRACT

Sometimes map projection designers need to create equal-area projections to best fill the projections’ purposes. However, unlike for conformal projections, few transformations have been described that can be applied to equal-area projections to develop new equal-area projections. Here, I survey area-preserving transformations, giving examples of their applications and proposing an efficient way of deploying an equal-area system for raster-based Web mapping. Together, these transformations provide a toolbox for the map projection designer working in the area-preserving domain.

Abstract

Field work for the 1/1,250 scale re-survey of Great Britain was fully described in an article by Brigadier R. P.Wheeler in the April, 1948, issue of this Review (ix, 68, 234–247). The object of this article is to outline the method’ of reproduction of these plans and of the resultant 1/2,500 scale plans of urban areas. The 1/2,500 series covering rural areas is a separate problem, one of revision rather than re-survey. Experiments are in hand now to find out the best ways to provide field material and produce the final plans on National Grid sheet lines. The 1/1,250 scale series will contain about forty thousand plans and the 1/2,500 series of the same areas about nine thousand. It is therefore important that production methods should be straightforward and maintain an economical balance between the use of men and machines.

Abstract

Perhaps the most important requirement in any air survey is that the ground surveyed points used as a basis for controlling the photography should be correctly identified on the photographs. In the writer's experience more difficulties and delays have been caused by misidentifications of these points in the field than perhaps from any other cause, and yet very little has been written on this important subject, and there are no generally recognised methods of point identification. In this article a system of point identification is described which the writer has used with success in certain types of country, and it is hoped that the article may lead to more contributions on the subject.

Abstract

In text-books on surveying the rangefinder is usually dismissed in one sentence, which merely remarks on its inaccuracies and places in the category of scientific curios an instrument which should be most valuable to the plane-tabler in certain types of country. It is to combat this effect and to help topographers in their arduous work that these notes have been written. They are written from experience gained on topographical survey, on a scale of 1/125,000, in a tropical dependency where reduction of cost is of primary importance.

Abstract

So much for the system. Now to describe the method of survey. Between 1902 and 1906 a chain of triangulation, extending from Zanzibar by way of the southern border of what is now Kenya Colony, and the northern and western shores of Lake Victoria to the Belgian Congo, had been surveyed by Anglo-German Boundary Commissions under G. E. Smith and Delmé Radcliffe as leaders. In 1902 a base line was measured near the middle of the Buganda Province by officers of the Uganda Survey Department. This was connected by triangulation to the Anglo-German chain, and several new chains were run across Buganda of an order of accuracy generally classified as that of tertiary triangulation. These chains are now known as the Uganda Main Triangulation, and form the backbone of the Buganda Cadastral Survey, popularly known as the “mailo” survey.

Abstract

As air-photographs are being more and more used for survey purposes, Empire surveyors who have not yet made a thorough study of aerial survey may be interested in a little elementary photographic geometry and its application to map-making. A map may be described as an orthogonal proj ection of the ground upon a horizontal plane, reduced to some convenient scale, and a photograph as a conical projection of the ground upon the focal plane of the camera. If the focal plane is horizontal at the instant of exposure and the ground being photographed is perfectly level, the two projections are exactly similar and the photograph is indeed a map. Unfortunately these conditions which are illustrated in fig. 1 are extremely rarely encountered, and photographs usually need correcting for various distortions.
