Abstract

Vectors and periodic phenomena, e.g. traffic versus time, have direction on a circular scale of 360°. An overview of existing methods for the display of circular-spatial and vectorial-spatial data, such as arrow plots, is given. We introduce the circular dataimage, a new type of graphic for the display of circular-spatial data. It is defined by encoding direction in a spatial display by using colors from a color wheel constructed by connecting three or more two-color gradients with color continuity at the connections. Therefore, image discontinuity from using a single-color gradient, e.g. blue–red, does not occur. High-resolution global views of ocean wind direction are used as a running example throughout the paper. Advantages and disadvantages of circular dataimages compared to arrow plots were obtained from a usability study. Circular dataimages provide for simultaneous recognition of fine structure on a small-scale and large-scale structure on a global scale.  相似文献

Abstract

This account of exploratory mapping is provided by a surveyor who started his working life as an explorer in areas where existing maps were extremely rough and rudimentary. Although the methods and results it describes will not stand comparison with modern topographical maps compiled from vertical air photographs, this frank and objective appraisal will help the 'chair-borne' cartographer to understand the importance of a thorough evaluation of some material of that type and age, which is still sometimes the best available until the new air surveys replace it.  相似文献

Abstract

While graphic variables in 2D maps have been extensively investigated, 4D cartography is still a widely unexplored field. In this paper, we investigate the usefulness of 4D maps (three spatial dimensions plus time) for cartographically illustrating spatio-temporal environmental phenomena. The presented approach focuses mostly on explorative research rather than on enhancement and extension of existing methods and principles. The user study described in the paper shows that 4D cartography is not a well-explored research area and that many experienced map users try to apply their knowledge from 2D maps to 4D dynamic visualisations. Thus, in order to foster the discussion within the community, we formulated several basic research questions for the area of 4D cartography, which range from methods for representing time in 4D visualisations and understanding the temporal context to finding generic methods to achieve optimized temporal generalisation and a consistent definition of graphical variables for 3D and 4D.  相似文献

Abstract

In a previous article in this Review, the writer endeavoured to show that chains of minor triangulation could be adjusted by plane rectangular co-ordinates ignoring the spherical form of the earth with little loss of accuracy, provided that the two ends were held fixed in position. It was demonstrated that the plane co-ordinates produced by the rigorous adjustment between the fixed starting and closing sides, differ by only a comparatively small amount from the projection co-ordinates produced by a rigorous adjustment on the Transverse Mercator projection. The saving in time when computing by plane co-ordinates as opposed to rigorous computation on the projection by any method will be apparent to any computer with experience of both methods.  相似文献

From periodic variations of the orbital inclinations of three artificial satellites 1959Alpha 1, 1960Iota 2, and 1962Beta Mu 1 Love’s number of the earth and time lag of the bodily tide due to the friction are determined, respectively,0.29±0.03 and(10±5) minutes in time. While the previous paper on the determination of Love’s number of the earth (Kozai, 1967) was in press, a minor error was discovered in the Differential Orbit Improvement program(DOI) of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory(SAO). Since the analysis was based on time-variations of the orbital inclinations which were derived by theDOI from precisely reduced Baker-Nunn observations, it is likely that the results in the previous paper was affected by the error in theDOI. Therefore, the analysis is iterated by using the revisedDOI. Three satellites, 1959Alpha 1 (Vanguard 2), 1960Iota 2 (rocket ofEcho 1), and 1962Beta Mu 1 (Anna) (see Table 1) are adopted for determining Love’s number in the present paper. The satellite, 1959Eta, which was used in the previous paper, is not adopted here, since the inclination of this satellite shows irregular variations unexplained. Instead of 1959Eta 1962Beta Mu 1 is adopted as orbital elements from precisely reduced Baker-Nunn observations have become available for a long interval of time for this satellite.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

It remains difficult to develop a clear understanding of geo-located events and their relationships to one another, particularly when it comes to identifying patterns of events in less-structured textual sources, such as news feeds and social media streams. Here we present a geovisualization tool that can leverage computational methods, such as T-pattern analysis, for extracting patterns of interest from event data streams. Our system, STempo, includes coordinated-view geovisualization components designed to support visual exploration and analysis of event data, and patterns extracted from those data, in terms of time, geography, and content. Through a user evaluation, we explore the usability and utility of STempo for understanding patterns of recent political, social, economic, and military events in Syria.  相似文献

Abstract

A reconstruction is made of the methods by which the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain pioneered a system for establishing the place-name nomenclature on its maps in the nineteenth century. Until 1820 there was little to differentiate the practice of the Survey from that of earlier cartographers but, thereafter, official surveyors were encouraged to consult a wide range of written and oral authorities and were instructed to record their findings in special name books. By the mid-nineteenth century the essentials of the modern system had been laid down and many thousands of local names published in map form for the first time.

ABSTRACT

The mean height-for-age Z-score (HAZ) of children under five is an important indicator of the health status of a population. HAZ values are frequently aggregated and reported at the national level, potentially obscuring important within-country variation. We evaluated aggregation and interpolation methods to provide sub-national estimates over space and time, using survey data from Nigeria in 1990, 2003, 2008, and 2013. We aggregated HAZ values by region and by state, and interpolated the values spatially and spatio-temporally using thin plate splines. The results were evaluated with cross-validation using the root mean squared error (RMSE) as a measure of goodness of fit. Mean HAZ values increased from 1990 to 2013, but values rose more sharply in southern Nigeria than in the North. All methods performed better than assuming a constant national average. The state-level aggregation, and the spatial and spatio-temporal interpolations had similar RMSE values, but the interpolation methods showed more detailed spatial variation. Spatio-temporal interpolation produced good results in all conditions, including in years with sparse sampling and when extrapolating to years for which there were no observations.  相似文献

A method for filtering of geodetic observationwhich leaves the final result normally distributed, is presented. Furthermore, it is shown that if you sacrifice100.a% of all the observations you may be (1−β).100% sure that a gross error of the size Δ is rejected. Another and, may be intuitively, more appealing method is presented; the two methods are compared and it is shown why Method 1 should be preferred to Method 2 for geodetic purposes. Abstract

Conventional methods of deriving global or continental vegetation maps from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) time series data are based on two‐value Boolean logic, which cannot properly model the so‐called ecotone, the transition zone between adjacent ecosystems. New methods and data models that have been developed on the basis of fuzzy logic to address the “mixed pixel” issue in multi‐spectral imagery can also be used with multi‐temporal imagery to handle the mixture of vegetation types within an ecotone. This study introduces the concept of semantic space and its transformation from spectral feature space, which utilizes a fuzzy logic approach to characterize the continuum of vegetation communities in the African continent from AVHRR multi‐temporal (12 months for three years from 1986 to 1988) NDVI data. The fuzzy procedure was based on the Fuzzy c‐Means (FCM) algorithm with significant modifications to improve processing speed for handling large volumes of data. A second‐order mapping approach was also devised to explicitly represent subdominant vegetative coverage in ecotones and other heterogeneous regions. Comparisons between a Sub‐Saharan African Vegetation Map compiled by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 1986 and the maps derived from this study demonstrated that fuzzy modeling and classification might provide a better and more realistic representation of the vegetative characteristics of the region.  相似文献

Abstract

Radar can be applied to surveying for precise measuren1ent of long lines, and as a navigational aid and position-fixing device for an aircraft performing a photographic survey. Trials of the radar method have recently been carried out in Australia using a modified “Shoran” equipment. The results of a large number of radar measurements of six distances, varying from 160 to 310 miles in length, indicate that an accuracy of 7 parts in 105 can be achieved. Equipment errors constitute the immediate limit to accuracy, but reasonable modifications would yield a figure of 2 parts in 105. Radar measurements can be completed in a fraction of the time required by normal ground survey methods, since a measurement of upwards of a hundred miles is made in a single step.

As an aid to photographic surveying a straight-line track indicator actuated by data from the “Shoran” equipment has been designed and flight tested. Its performance enabled a pilot taking aerial photographs to keep the aircraft to within an average departure of less than 0.02 mile from any desired straight-line flight path.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Jacques Bertin’s legacy extends beyond the domain of cartography, and in particular to the field of information visualization where he continues to inspire researchers and practitioners. Although in the late twentieth century his books were out of print, their reedition around 2010 has steered a renewed interest and inspired new generations of researchers to reinterpret the principles of Semiology of Graphics and La Graphique in a time of interactive computers. In particular, the work of Jacques Bertin on the reorderable matrix has been very challenging in his time, and the quest to its automation has not been satisfactory to him. This article summarizes Bertin’s approach to the reorderable matrix, underlines the limitations of fully automated reordering methods, and introduces Bertifier, a hybrid system to reorder matrices using a combination of machine assistance and human control.  相似文献

In the field of biomass estimation, terrain radiometric calibration of airborne polarimetric SAR data for forested areas is an urgent problem. Illuminated area correction of σ -naught could not completely remove terrain features. Inspired by Small and Shimada, this paper tested gamma-naught on one mountainous forested area using airborne Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar data and found it could remove most terrain features. However, a systematic increasing trend from far range to near range is found in airborne SAR cases. This paper made an attempt to use the relationship between distance to SAR sensor and γ-naught to calibrate γ -naught. Two quantitative evaluation methods are proposed. Experimental results demonstrate that variation of γ -naught can be constrained to a limited extent from near range to far range. Since this method is based on ground range images, it avoids complicated orthorectification.  相似文献

Abstract

In January 1940, in a paper entitled “The Transverse Mercator Projection: A Critical Examination” (E.S.R., v, 35, 285), the late Captain G. T. McCaw obtained expressions for the co-ordinates of a point on the Transverse Mercator projection of the spheroid which appeared to cast suspicion on the results originally derived by Gauss. McCaw considered, in fact, that his expressions gave the true measures of the co-ordinates, and that the Gauss method contained some invalidity. He requested readers to report any flaw that might be discovered in his work, but apparently no such flaw had been detected at the time of his death. It can be shown, however, that the invalidities are in McCaw's methods, and there seems no reason for doubting the results derived by the Gauss method.  相似文献
