Blue Supergiants (BSGs) are the brightest stars in the universe at visual light with absolute magnitudes up to M V =−10 mag. They are ideal stellar objects for the determination of extragalactic distances, in particular, because the perennial uncertainties troubling most of the other stellar distance indicators, interstellar extinction and metallicity, do not affect them. The quantitative spectral analysis of low resolution spectra of individual BSGs provides accurate stellar parameters and chemical composition, which are then used to determine accurate reddening and extinction from photometry for each individual object. Accurate distances can be determined from stellar gravities and effective temperatures using the “Flux Weighted Gravity–Luminosity Relationship (FGLR)”.  相似文献

We present SALT spectroscopy of a globular cluster in the center of the nearby isolated dSph galaxy KKs3 situated at a distance of 2.12 Mpc. Its heliocentric radial velocity is 316 ± 7 km s–1 that corresponds to VLG = 112 km s–1 in the Local Group (LG) reference frame. We use its distance and velocity along with the data on other 35 field galaxies in the proximity of the LG to trace the local Hubble flow. The following basic properties of the local field galaxies are briefly discusse: morphology, absolute magnitudes, average surface brightnesses, specific star formation rates, and hydrogen mass‐to‐stellar mass ratios. Surprisingly, the sample of the neighboring isolated galaxies displays no signs of compression under the influence of the expanding Local Void. (© 2015 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We present photometric evolution models of galaxies, in which, in addition to the stellar component, the effects of an evolving dusty interstellar medium have been included with particular care. Starting from the work of Calura et al., in which chemical evolution models have been used to study the evolution of both the gas and dust components of the interstellar medium in the solar neighbourhood, elliptical and irregular galaxies, it has been possible to combine these models with a spectrophotometric stellar code that includes dust reprocessing ( grasil ) to analyse the evolution of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these galaxies. We test our models against observed SEDs both in the local universe and at high redshift, and use them to predict how the percentage of reprocessed starlight evolves for each type of galaxy. The importance of following the dust evolution is investigated by comparing our results with those obtained by adopting simple assumptions to treat this component.  相似文献

Summary The Magellanic Clouds play a fundamental role in a number of fields of astronomical research. Their distances are most relevant to the extragalactic distance scale. Their relative proximity offers exceptional opportunities for detailed studies of their stellar and interstellar content. They serve therefore as testing grounds for modern astrophysical theories, in particular concerning the chemical evolution of stars and galaxies. In this review we will discuss recent attempts to determine accurate distances to the Magellanic Clouds. We will consider their stellar generations as the results of interactions between the Large and the Small Magellanic Cloud as well as between the Clouds and the Galaxy. Recent determinations of the chemical abundances of the various age groups will be presented. The fact that the evolution of the Clouds has been slower than that of our Galaxy gives us the opportunity to study the conditions in slightly metalpoor galaxies. Recent progress in observing techniques has added much to our knowledge about the interstellar medium of the Clouds. The Magellanic System, which comprises the Magellanic Clouds, the Inter-Cloud Region and the Magellanic Stream, will be described. We will in particular consider the complex structure of the Large and the Small Cloud and the kinematics of their populations.  相似文献

With the sample of 105 emission line galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 (SDSS DR4), we have investigated the relations of the [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratio with the dust extinction, the ionization state of interstellar gas and the metal abundance of galaxies. It is found that the dust extinction correction has a significant effect on the [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratio. Before and after the dust distinction correction is made, the mean [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratios are 0.48 and 0.89, respectively. After the dust extinction is corrected, the dispersion of the distribution of F([OII]λ3727) as a function of F(Hα) is obviously reduced. The [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratio of metal-poor galaxies decreases with the increasing ionization degree of interstellar gas, but this relation does not exist in metal-rich galaxies. Besides, it is found that the [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratio is correlated with the metal abundance. When 12 + lg(O/H) > 8.5, the [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratio decreases with the increasing metal abundance; for the galaxies of 12 + lg(O/H) > 8.5, the spectral flux ratio correlates positively with the metal abundance. Finally, by using the parameters of gas ionization degree and metal abundances of galaxies, the formulae for calculating the [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratios of different types of galaxies are given. With the [OII]λ3727/Hα flux ratio given by these formulae, the star formation rate can be derived by using the [OII]λ3727-line flux, for the galaxies of the redshift z > 0.4, such as the large number of galaxies to be observed by the LAMOST telescope.  相似文献

Gamma‐ray bursts (GRBs) are the most powerful explosions since the formation of the Universe, associated with the death of massive stars or mergers of compact stellar objects. Several recent striking results strongly support the idea that host galaxies of GRBs are opening a new view on our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution, back to the very primordial universe at z ∼ 8. They form a unique sample of galaxies which cover a wide range of redshift, they are typically weak with low mass and unlike other methods they are not selected on luminosity. In recent years, thanks to the support of new generation instruments, multi‐band photometry and spectroscopy allow us to better investigate the properties of these host galaxies (e.g., stellar mass, age, SFR, metallicity), to study their possible evolution and to compare them with field galaxies and other classes of galaxies. GRB host spectroscopy is one of the main science drivers behind the X‐shooter spectrograph. We reconsider the use of the equivalent width of C  iv  λ1549, EW(C  iv ), as an indicator of the oxygen abundance in star-forming galaxies, as proposed by Heckman et al. for nearby starbursts. We refine the local calibration of EW(C  iv ) versus log (O/H) by using a restricted wavelength window which minimizes blending with interstellar absorption lines. When applied to the stellar component only of the complex C  iv  λ1549 features in two high-redshift galaxies with good quality spectra,  MS 1512−cB58 ( z = 2.7268)  and  Q1307−BM1163 ( z = 1.4105)  , the local calibration gives values of the oxygen abundance which are in good agreement with other metallicity determinations based on nebular emission and interstellar absorption lines. Our main conclusion is that for this method to give reliable results at high redshifts, it should only be used on data of sufficiently high spectral resolution  ( R ≳ 1000)  for stellar and interstellar C  iv components to be clearly separated. Oxygen abundances will be systematically overestimated if the local calibration is applied to spectra of high-redshift galaxies obtained with the low resolving powers  ( R ≃ 200–300)  of many current wide-field surveys. It will also be necessary to understand better the causes of the scatter in the local relation, before we can be confident of inferences from it at high z .  相似文献

In the last couple of decades hundreds of studies have explored the nature of star‐forming galaxies at different redshifts. This contribution focuses on X‐shooter observations of star‐burst galaxies at 0 < z < 6 from commissioning runs, science verification, and regular observations, and demonstrates the capability of the new instrument in this competitive field. Observations of gravitationally lensed galaxies show that X‐shooter has no limitation in the redshift desert (1.4 < z < 2) where the strong optical emission lines are shifted to the near‐IR region. Physical properties of galaxies, such as masses, metallicities, abundance ratios, and star formation rates can be derived from observations with relatively short integration times for faint galaxies. The simultaneous UV to near‐IR spectral coverage makes derivation of physical quantities more reliable because there are no differential slit losses as may occur when observations from different optical and near‐IR instruments are used. Over the entire redshift range, spectra of faint galaxies will allow us to better measure stellar ages and dominating ionisation sources compared to broad band spectral energy distribution measurements (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. On the basis of photographs from the 6 m Large Azimuthal Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope, VRI photometry of stars in 11 galaxies in the NGC 1023 group has been carried out. The distances to these galaxies were determined by the method of brightest stars. The distances to NGC 925 and NGC 1023 were determined from the position of the top of the red giant branch (the TRGB method). From the calculated average and root-mean-square distances to the NGC 1023 group (10.3 ± 2.2 Mpc and 9.7 ± 0.5 Mpc) the Hubble constant in this direction was determined: H 0R = 75 ± 8 km·sec-1·Mpc-1 and H 0M = 81 ± 5 km ·sec-1·Mpc-1.  相似文献

We present optical spectra of the nuclei of seven luminous ( P 178 MHz≳1025 W Hz−1 Sr−1) nearby ( z <0.08) radio galaxies, which mostly correspond to the FR II class. In two cases, Hydra A and 3C 285, the Balmer and λ 4000-Å break indices constrain the spectral types and luminosity classes of the stars involved, revealing that the blue spectra are dominated by blue supergiant and/or giant stars. The ages derived for the last burst of star formation in Hydra A are between 7 and 40 Myr, and in 3C 285 about 10 Myr. The rest of the narrow-line radio galaxies (four) have a λ 4000-Å break and metallic indices consistent with those of elliptical galaxies. The only broad-line radio galaxy in our sample, 3C 382, has a strong featureless blue continuum and broad emission lines that dilute the underlying blue stellar spectra. We are able to detect the Ca  ii triplet in absorption in the seven objects, with good quality data for only four of them. The strengths of the absorptions are similar to those found in normal elliptical galaxies, but these values are consistent both with stellar populations of roughly similar ages (as derived from the Balmer absorption and break strengths) and with mixed young+old populations.  相似文献

Recent advances in instrumentation and observing techniques have made it possible to begin to study in detail the stellar populations and the interstellar media of galaxies at redshift z = 3, when the universe was still in its ‘teen years’. I illustrate recent progress in this field with the latest observations of the gravitationally lensed galaxy MS 1512- cB58. This revised version was published online in September 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Observations are presented of the isolated dwarf irregular galaxy And IV made with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope in the 21 cm HI line. We determine the galaxy distance of 7.17 ± 0.31 Mpc using the Tip of Red Giant Branch method. The galaxy has a total blue absolute magnitude of –12.81 mag, linear Holmberg diameter of 1.88 kpc, and an HI ‐disk extending to 8.4 times the optical Holmberg radius. The HI massto‐blue luminosity ratio for And IV amounts 12.9 M/L. From the GMRT data we derive the rotation curve for the HI and fit it with different mass models. We find that the data are significantly better fit with an iso‐thermal dark matter halo, than by an NFW halo. We also find that MOND rotation curve provides a very poor fit to the data. The fact that the isothermal dark matter halo provides the best fit to the data supports models in which star formation feedback results in the formation of a dark matter core in dwarf galaxies. The total mass‐to‐blue luminosity ratio of 162 M/L makes And IV among the darkest dIrr galaxies known. However, its baryonic‐to‐dark mass ratio (Mgas + M *)/MT = 0.11 is close to the average cosmic baryon fraction of 0.15. (© 2016 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Summary The status of the cosmic distance scale problem in early 1989 is reviewed. Internally consistent distances to Local Group galaxies are given in Tables 5 and 6. Within the Local Group the distance scale is found to be 11±5% smaller than that previously adopted by Sandage and Tammann. Distances to nearby galaxies are used as stepping stones to the Virgo cluster. The interpretation of the Tully-Fisher observations of Virgo spirals is found to be ambiguous because it is not yet clear which spirals are cluster members and which are background objects. Distance estimates of the Virgo cluster obtained by different techniques are listed in Table 11. The distance modulus of the Virgo cluster is found to be 31.5±0.2, corresponding to a distance of 20±2 Mpc. The elliptical galaxies in the core of the Virgo cluster haveV 0=1200±46 kms–1, which corresponds toV LG=1082±48 km s–1. With an infall velocity of 250±50 km s–1 this yields a cosmological redshiftV=1332±69 km s–1, from which a Hubble parameter H0=67±8 km s–1 Mpc–1 is obtained. Space Telescope observations of distant Cepheids, Tully-Fisher observations of spirals in the Hercules eluster, and interference filter observations of Virgo planetary nebulae in the light of [OIII], should soon result in a major improvement in the accuracy with which H0 is known.  相似文献

We use a  0.040 < z < 0.085  sample of 37 866 star-forming galaxies from the Fourth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to investigate the dependence of gas-phase chemical properties on stellar mass and environment. The local density, determined from the projected distances to the fourth and fifth nearest neighbours, is used as an environment indicator. Considering environments ranging from voids, i.e.  log Σ≲−0.8  , to the periphery of galaxy clusters, i.e.  log Σ≈ 0.8  , we find no dependence of the relationship between galaxy stellar mass and gas-phase oxygen abundance, along with its associated scatter, on local galaxy density. However, the star-forming gas in galaxies shows a marginal increase in the chemical enrichment level at a fixed stellar mass in denser environments. Compared with galaxies of similar stellar mass in low-density environments, they are enhanced by a few per cent for massive galaxies to about 20 per cent for galaxies with stellar masses  ≲109.5 M  . These results imply that the evolution of star-forming galaxies is driven primarily by their intrinsic properties and is largely independent of their environment over a large range of local galaxy density.  相似文献

The slope Δ Y /Δ Z is a quantity of interest in relation to stellar evolution, the initial mass function and the determination of the primordial helium abundance. In this paper we estimate Δ Y /Δ Z from fine structure in the main sequence of nearby stars from Hipparcos data for stars with Z  ≤ Z⊙. We find a value of about 3, which is consistent with what has been found in extragalactic H  II regions and with stellar models for suitable upper limits to the initial masses of supernovae according to the initial mass function slope adopted.  相似文献

Parallaxes of W UMa stars in the Hipparcos catalogue have been analyzed. 31 W UMa stars, which have the most accurate parallaxes (σπ /π < 0.15) which are neither associated with a photometric tertiary nor with evidence of a visual companion, were selected for re‐calibrating the Period‐Luminosity‐Color (PLC) relation of W UMa stars. Using the Lutz‐Kelker (LK) bias corrected (most probable) parallaxes, periods (0.26 < P < 0.87, P in days), and colors (0.04 < (BV)0 < 1.28) of the 31 selected W UMa, the PLC relation have been revised and re‐calibrated. The difference between the old (revised but not bias corrected) and the new (LK bias corrected) relations are almost negligible in predicting the distances of W UMa stars up to about 100 pc. But, it increases and may become intolerable as distances of stars increase. Additionally, using (JH)0 and (HKs)0 colors from 2MASS (TwoMicron All Sky Survey) data, a PLC relation working with infrared data was derived. It can be used with infrared colors in the range –0.01 < (JH)0 < 0.58, and –0.10 < (HKs)0 < 0.18. Despite of the fact that the 2MASS data refer to single epoch observations which are not guaranteed to be taken at maximum brightness of theWUMa stars, the established relation has been found surprisingly consistent and reliable in predicting LK corrected distances of W UMa stars (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. galev (GALaxy EVolution) evolutionary synthesis models describe the evolution of stellar populations in general, of star clusters as well as of galaxies, both in terms of resolved stellar populations and of integrated light properties over cosmological time-scales of ≥13 Gyr from the onset of star formation shortly after the big bang until today.
For galaxies, galev includes a simultaneous treatment of the chemical evolution of the gas and the spectral evolution of the stellar content, allowing for what we call a chemically consistent treatment: we use input physics (stellar evolutionary tracks, stellar yields and model atmospheres) for a large range of metallicities and consistently account for the increasing initial abundances of successive stellar generations.
Here we present the latest version of the galev evolutionary synthesis models that are now interactively available at http://www.galev.org . We review the currently used input physics, and also give details on how this physics is implemented in practice. We explain how to use the interactive web interface to generate models for user-defined parameters and also give a range of applications that can be studied using galev , ranging from star clusters, undisturbed galaxies of various types E–Sd to starburst and dwarf galaxies, both in the local and the high-redshift Universe.  相似文献

We present and discuss V BLUW photometry of eleven massive stars in the Magellanic Clouds: the SMC stars AzV121, AzV136 = HD5277 = R10, AzV197, AzV310 = R26 and AzV 369; the LMC stars GV80 = HD32034 = R62, GV91 = HDE 268 819, GV346 = HDE 269661 = R111, GV352 = HDE 269697, GV423 = HDE 269953 = R150 and GV460 = HDE 270111. Only one G0 Ia SMC supergiant is found to be variable, whereas all members of the LMC sample show definite variability. We find that roughly above M /M = 25, supergiants become photometrically unstable. The reddening‐independent metal‐index [BL ] is used to investigate the metallicity of the late‐type supergiants in both galaxies relative to similar supergiants in the solar neighbourhood. We present a comparison between the SCUBA (Submillimetre Common User Bolometer Array) Half Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES) at 450 and  850 μm  in the Lockman Hole East with a deep Spitzer Space Telescope survey at  3.6–24 μm  conducted in guaranteed time. Using stacking analyses we demonstrate a striking correspondence between the galaxies contributing the submm extragalactic background light, with those likely to dominate the backgrounds at Spitzer wavelengths. Using a combination BRIzK plus Spitzer photometric redshifts, we show that at least a third of the Spitzer -identified submm galaxies at  1 < z < 1.5  appear to reside in overdensities when the density field is smoothed at 0.5–2 Mpc comoving diameters, supporting the high-redshift reversal of the local star formation–galaxy density relation. We derive the dust-shrouded cosmic star formation history of galaxies as a function of assembled stellar masses. For model stellar masses  <1011 M  , this peaks at lower redshifts than the ostensible   z ∼ 2.2  maximum for submm point sources, adding to the growing consensus for 'downsizing' in star formation. Our surveys are also consistent with 'downsizing' in mass assembly. Both the mean star formation rates  〈d M */d t 〉  and specific star formation rates  〈(1/ M *) d M */d t 〉  are in striking disagreement with some semi-analytic predictions from the Millenium Simulation. The discrepancy could either be resolved with a top-heavy initial mass function, or a significant component of the submm flux heated by the interstellar radiation field.  相似文献

Key information to understand the formation and evolution of disk galaxies are imprinted in the stellar populations of their bulges. This paper has the purpose to make available new measurements of the stellar population properties of the bulges of four spiral galaxies. Both the central values and radial profiles of the line strength of some of the most common Lick indices are measured along the major‐ and minor‐ axis of the bulge‐dominated region of the sample galaxies. The corresponding age, metallicity, and α /Fe ratio are derived by using the simple stellar population synthesis model predictions. The central values and the gradients of the stellar population properties of ESO‐LV 1890070, ESO‐LV 4460170, and ESO‐LV 5140100 are consistent with previous findings for bulges of spiral galaxies. On the contrary, the bulge of ESO‐LV 4500200 shows peculiar chemical properties possibly due to the presence of a central kinematically‐decoupled component. The negative metallicity gradient found in our bulges sample indicates a relevant role for the dissipative collapse in bulge formation. However, the shallow gradients found for the age and α /Fe ratio suggests that merging can not be completely ruled out for the sample bulges. This is confirmed by the properties of ESO‐LV 4500200 which can hardly be explained without invoking the capture of external material. (© 2015 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献
