Water Utilisation Index (WUI) defined as area irrigated per unit volume is a measure of water delivery performance and constitutes one of the important spatial performance indicators of an irrigation system. WUI also forms basis for evaluating the adequacy of seasonal irrigation supplies in an irrigation system (inverse of WUI is delta, i.e. depth of water supplied to a given irrigation unit). In the present study WUI and adequacy indicators were used in benchmarking the performance of Nagarjunasagar Left Canal Command (NSLC) in Andhra Pradesh. Optimised temporal satellite data of rabi season during the years 1990–91 and 1998–99 was used in deriving irrigated crop areas adopting hierarchical classification approach. Paddy is the predominant crop grown and cotton, chillies, sugarcane etc. are the other crops grown in the study area. Equivalent wet area (paddy crop area) was estimated using the operationally used project specific conversion factors. WUI was estimated at disaggregated level viz., distributary, irrigation block, irrigation zone level using the canal discharge data. At project level, WUI estimated to be 65 ha/MCM and 92 ha/MCM during rabi season of 1990–91 and 1998–99 years respectively. A comparison of total irrigated area and discharges corresponding to both the years indicate that irrigation service is extensive and sub optimal during 1998–99 and it is intensive and optimal in 1990–91. It was also observed that WUI is lesser in blocks of with higher Culturable Command Area (CCA) compared to the blocks of lower CCA. All the disaggregated units were ranked into various groups of different levels of water distribution performance. The study demonstrates the utility of WUI as spatial performance indicator and thus useful for benchmarking studies of irrigation command areas. The WUI together with satellite data derived spatial irrigation intensity, crop productivity constitutes important benchmarking indices in irrigation command areas.  相似文献

Spectral modeling of above ground biomass (AGB) with field data collected in 48 field sites representing moist deciduous forest in Surat district is reported. Models were generated using LISS-III and MODIS data. The plot-wise field data was aggregated to MODIS pixel (250 m) using area weightages of forest/vegetation. The study reports that above ground phytomass varied from 6.13 t/ha to 389.166 t/ha while AGB phytomass estimated using area-weights for sites of 250×250 m, ranged from 5.534 t/ha to 134.082 t/ha. The contribution of bamboo in AGB has been found very high. The analysis indicated that the highest correlation between AGB phytomass and red band (R) of MODIS satellite data of October was (R2=0.7823) and R2=0.6998 with both NDVI of October data as well as NDVImax. High correlation (R2=0.402) with IR band of February month was also found. The phytomass range obtained by using MODIS data varies from 0.147 t/ha to 182.16 t/ha. The mean biomass is 40.50 t/ha. Total biomass is 31.44 Mt. The mean Carbon density is 19.44 tC/ha in forest areas. The study is validation of region-wise spectral modeling approach that will be adopted for mapping vegetation carbon pool of the India under National Carbon Project of ISRO-Geosphere Biosphere Programme.  相似文献

Low-degree earth deformation from reprocessed GPS observations   总被引:3,自引:1,他引:2
Surface mass variations of low spherical harmonic degree are derived from residual displacements of continuously tracking global positioning system (GPS) sites. Reprocessed GPS observations of 14 years are adjusted to obtain surface load coefficients up to degree n max = 6 together with station positions and velocities from a rigorous parameter combination. Amplitude and phase estimates of the degree-1 annual variations are partly in good agreement with previously published results, but also show interannual differences of up to 2 mm and about 30 days, respectively. The results of this paper reveal significant impacts from different GPS observation modeling approaches on estimated degree-1 coefficients. We obtain displacements of the center of figure (CF) relative to the center of mass (CM), Δr CF–CM, that differ by about 10 mm in maximum when compared to those of the commonly used coordinate residual approach. Neglected higher-order ionospheric terms are found to induce artificial seasonal and long-term variations especially for the z-component of Δr CF–CM. Daily degree-1 estimates are examined in the frequency domain to assess alias contributions from model deficiencies with regard to satellite orbits. Finally, we directly compare our estimated low-degree surface load coefficients with recent results that involve data from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission.  相似文献

The present study investigates the characteristics of CO2 exchange (photosynthesis and respiration) over agricultural site dominated by wheat crop and their relationship with ecosystem parameters derived from MODIS. Eddy covariance measurement of CO2 and H2O exchanges was carried out at 10 Hz interval and fluxes of CO2 were computed at half-hourly time steps. The net ecosystem exchange (NEE) was partitioned into gross primary productivity (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (R e) by taking difference between day-time NEE and respiration. Time-series of daily reflectance and surface temperature products at varying resolution (250–1000 m) were used to derive ecosystem variables (EVI, NDVI, LST). Diurnal pattern in Net ecosystem exchange reveals negative NEE during day-time representing CO2 uptake and positive during night as release of CO2. The amplitude of the diurnal variation in NEE increased as LAI crop growth advances and reached its peak around the anthesis stage. The mid-day uptake during this stage was around 1.15 mg CO2 m−2 s−1 and night-time release was around 0.15 mg CO2 m−2 s−1. Linear and non-linear least square regression procedures were employed to develop phenomenological models and empirical fits between flux tower based GPP and NEE with satellite derived variables and environmental parameters. Enhanced vegetation index was found significantly related to both GPP and NEE. However, NDVI showed little less significant relationship with both GPP and NEE. Furthemore, temperature-greenness (TG) model combining scaled EVI and LST was parameterized to estimate daily GPP over dominantly wheat crop site. (R 2 = 0.77). Multi-variate analysis shows that inclusion of LST or air temperature with EVI marginally improves variance explained in daily NEE and GPP.  相似文献

Background

Globally, the loss of forests now contributes almost 20% of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. There is an immediate need to reduce the current rates of forest loss, and the associated release of carbon dioxide, but for many areas of the world these rates are largely unknown. The Soviet Union contained a substantial part of the world's forests and the fate of those forests and their effect on carbon dynamics remain unknown for many areas of the former Eastern Bloc. For Georgia, the political and economic transitions following independence in 1991 have been dramatic. In this paper we quantify rates of land use changes and their effect on the terrestrial carbon budget for Georgia. A carbon book-keeping model traces changes in carbon stocks using historical and current rates of land use change. Landsat satellite images acquired circa 1990 and 2000 were analyzed to detect changes in forest cover since 1990.  相似文献

The current study was taken up to investigate the utility of remote sensing and GIS tools for evaluation of Integrated Wasteland Development Programme (IWDP) implemented during 1997–2001 in Katangidda Nala watershed, Chincholi taluk, Gulbarga district, Karnataka. The study was carried out using IRS 1C, LISS III data of December 11, 1997 (pre-treatment) and November 15, 2002 (post-treatment) covering the watershed to assess the changes in land use / land cover and biomass that have changed over a period of five years (1997–2002). The images were classified into different land use/land cover categories using supervised classification by maximum likelihood algorithm. They were also classified into different biomass levels using Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) approach. The results indicated that the area under agriculture crops and forest land were increased by 671 ha (5.7%) and 1,414 ha (11.94%) respectively. This is due to the fact that parts of wastelands and fallow lands were brought into cultivation. This increase in the area may be attributed to better utilization of surface and ground waters, adoption of soil and water conservation practices and changes in cropping pattern. The area under waste lands and fallow lands decreased by 1,667 ha (14.07%) and 467 ha (3.94%), respectively. The vegetation vigour of the area was classified into three classes using NDVI. Substantial increase in the area under high and low biomass levels was observed (502 ha and 19 ha respectively). The benefit-cost analysis indicates that the use of remote sensing and GIS was 2.2 times cheaper than the conventional methods. Thus, the repetitive coverage of the satellite data provides an excellent opportunity to monitor the land resources and evaluate the land cover changes through comparison of images for the watershed at different periods.  相似文献

The southern Yucatán (SY) has been recognized as a hotspot of biodiversity with great risk of deforestation. Land change analysis, based on classified Landsat TM and ETM?+?satellite imagery (1990, 2000 and 2006), was used to estimate the annual deforestation rates of 141 land management units of the SY, and spatial patterns of forest fragmentation around and within the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve (CBR), which comprises approximately one-third of the region. Results indicate a decrease in annual deforestation rates over 1990–2006, from 0.15% year?1 to 0.06% year?1, but with significant sub-regional variations in the quantity and rate of forest loss. Despite a decline in deforestation during this period, there was considerable fragmentation both inside and outside the CBR. While population pressures and the expansion of pasture have caused deforestation across the region, agricultural intensification, diversified income strategies and reserve conservation may have contributed to reduced forest loss during the study period.  相似文献

The study compared forest cover maps derived using coarse resolution vegetation continuous fields (MODIS VCF; 500m resolution) with the maps derived from medium resolution (24m; IRS LISS-III) data. The comparison of VCF, per cent tree cover product, for the years 2000 to 2004 with LISS III forest density class maps of 2001 and 2003 was carried out for two sites representing hilly (Uttarakhand) and undulating terrains (Madhya Pradesh). Slicing VCF to corresponding forest crown cover, i.e., 0–10%, 10–40%, 40–70% and >70% produced considerable difference in forest area estimates when compared to original LISS III derived crown cover area. The corresponding value range in VCF for 0–10% of actual forest cover were 0–31% and 0–25% in 2 sites respectively, and the respective limit was consistent at 1–20% when VCF range were sliced with respect to upscaled LISS III at 500m resolution. Similarly, all other class limits were also found through iterative process. These limits were similar, within a site, across five years. Spatial Kappa match between these two data indicated higher match in 40–70% class, and also in undulating site. When compared at same resolution, similar forest area cover estimated with weighted area upscaling gave closest match. The study is useful in knowing the usability and limits of VCF product, and utility of spatial Kappa.  相似文献

A global systematic sampling scheme has been developed by the UN FAO and the EC TREES project to estimate rates of deforestation at global or continental levels at intervals of 5 to 10 years. This global scheme can be intensified to produce results at the national level. In this paper, using surrogate observations, we compare the deforestation estimates derived from these two levels of sampling intensities (one, the global, for the Brazilian Amazon the other, national, for French Guiana) to estimates derived from the official inventories. We also report the precisions that are achieved due to sampling errors and, in the case of French Guiana, compare such precision with the official inventory precision. We extract nine sample data sets from the official wall-to-wall deforestation map derived from satellite interpretations produced for the Brazilian Amazon for the year 2002 to 2003. This global sampling scheme estimate gives 2.81 million ha of deforestation (mean from nine simulated replicates) with a standard error of 0.10 million ha. This compares with the full population estimate from the wall-to-wall interpretations of 2.73 million ha deforested, which is within one standard error of our sampling test estimate. The relative difference between the mean estimate from sampling approach and the full population estimate is 3.1%, and the standard error represents 4.0% of the full population estimate. This global sampling is then intensified to a territorial level with a case study over French Guiana to estimate deforestation between the years 1990 and 2006. For the historical reference period, 1990, Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper data were used. A coverage of SPOT-HRV imagery at 20 m × 20 m resolution acquired at the Cayenne receiving station in French Guiana was used for year 2006.Our estimates from the intensified global sampling scheme over French Guiana are compared with those produced by the national authority to report on deforestation rates under the Kyoto protocol rules for its overseas department. The latter estimates come from a sample of nearly 17,000 plots analyzed from same spatial imagery acquired between year 1990 and year 2006. This sampling scheme is derived from the traditional forest inventory methods carried out by IFN (Inventaire Forestier National). Our intensified global sampling scheme leads to an estimate of 96,650 ha deforested between 1990 and 2006, which is within the 95% confidence interval of the IFN sampling scheme, which gives an estimate of 91,722 ha, representing a relative difference from the IFN of 5.4%.These results demonstrate that the intensification of the global sampling scheme can provide forest area change estimates close to those achieved by official forest inventories (<6%), with precisions of between 4% and 7%, although we only estimate errors from sampling, not from the use of surrogate data.Such methods could be used by developing countries to demonstrate that they are fulfilling requirements for reducing emissions from deforestation in the framework of an REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation in Developing Countries) mechanism under discussion within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Monitoring systems at national levels in tropical countries can also benefit from pan-tropical and regional observations, to ensure consistency between different national monitoring systems.  相似文献

Quantitative assessment of chlorophyll-a concentration and its variability is an important input for the oceanic primary productivity modeling and also a key parameter in the global carbon cycle studies. This present work is focused to understand the spatial and temporal variability of phytoplankton in the Bay of Bengal (BOB) during winter monsoon season of October 1999 to March 2000 using Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM) sensor onboard OCEANSAT-1 satellite. Daily chlorophyll-a images from OCM sensor were used in the study. Efforts were also put to study the correlation between chlorophyll-a concentrations; NOAA-AVHRR derived Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and QuickSCAT scatterometer derived wind stress data. Analysis of the chlorophyll-a images shows the presence of extensive phytoplankton blooms during mid December 1999 to early January 2000 in the western part of BOB. The bloom dominated regions also exhibit reduced SST (∼24–27°C) and enhanced wind stress indicating upwelling processes leading nutrient entrainment in the upper column of the sea surface. Apart from this, higher phytoplankton biomass associated with the fresh water reverine plumes has also been observed. During October 1999 a super cyclone was active in the BOB, as increase in the productivity was observed in the early November 1999 images of OCM data due to the cyclone induced churning of the water column.  相似文献

Temporal correlation in network real-time kinematic (RTK) data exists due to unmodeled multipath and atmospheric errors, in combination with slowly changing satellite constellation. If this correlation is neglected, the estimated uncertainty of the coordinates might be too optimistic. In this study, we compute temporal correlation lengths for network RTK positioning, i.e., the appropriate time separation between the measurements. This leads to more realistic coordinate uncertainty estimates, and an appropriate surveying strategy to control the measurements can be designed. Two methods to estimate temporal correlation lengths are suggested. Several monitor stations that utilize correction data from two SWEPOSTM Network RTK services, a standard service and a project-adapted service with the mean distance between the reference stations of approximately 70 and 10–20 km, are evaluated. The correlation lengths for the standard service are estimated as 17 min for the horizontal component and 36–37 min for the vertical component. The corresponding estimates for the project-adapted service are 13–17 and 13–16 min, respectively. According to the F test, the proposed composite first-order Gauss–Markov autocovariance function shows a significantly better least-squared fit to data compared to the commonly used one-component first-order Gauss–Markov model. A second suggested method is proposed that has the potential of providing robust correlation lengths without the need to fit a model to the computed autocovariance function.  相似文献

A statistical study of the occurrence characteristic of GPS ionospheric scintillation and irregularity in the polar latitude is presented. These measurements were made at Ny-Alesund, Svalbard [78.9°N, 11.9°E; 75.8°N corrected geomagnetic latitude (CGMLat)] and Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica (69.4°S, 76.4°E; 74.6°S CGMLat) during 2007–2008. It is found that the GPS phase scintillation and irregularity activity mainly takes place in the months 10, 11 and 12 at Ny-Alesund, and in the months 5, 6 at Larsemann Hills. The seasonal pattern of phase scintillation with respect to the station indicates that the GPS phase scintillation occurrence is a local winter phenomenon, which shows consistent results with past studies of 250 MHz satellite beacon measurements. The occurrence rates of GPS amplitude scintillation at the two stations are below 1%. A comparison with the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) B y and B z components shows that the phase scintillation occurrence level is higher during the period from later afternoon to sunset (16–19 h) at Ny-Alesund, and from sunset to pre-midnight (18–23 h) at Larsemann Hills for negative IMF components. The findings seem to indicate that the dependence of scintillation and irregularity occurrence on geomagnetic activity appears to be associated with the magnetic local time (MLT).  相似文献

Land-use change and Land-cover classes in Garur Ganga watershed of Bageshwar district in Uttranchal State during the periods 1963–1996 and 1986–1996 were analyzed through Survey of India Topographical Sheet and visual interpretation of LANDSAT 5 TM image bands 2, 3 and 4 using Geographical Information System (GIS). The detailed analysis have revealed that the area under agriculture and settlement increased from 34.98 to 42.34%. whereas the forest and barren land show a declining trend. Expansion of agriculture land and builtup areas have been found to be maximum in the 1200–1600 m elevation zone with 7–14° slope class. The loss of vegetation cover has been estimated to be 5.07% between 1963-1996 and 0.81% between 1986–1996.  相似文献

As any satellite geodesy technique, DORIS can monitor geocenter variations associated to mass changes within the Earth–Atmosphere–Continental hydrosphere–Oceans system. However, especially for the Z-component, corresponding to a translation of the Earth along its rotation axis, the estimated geocenter is usually affected by large systematic errors of unknown cause. By reprocessing old DORIS data, and by analyzing single satellite solutions in the frequency domain, we show that some of these errors are satellite-dependent and related to the current DORIS orbit determination strategy. In particular, a better handling of solar pressure radiation effects on SPOT-2 and TOPEX satellites is proposed which removes a large part of such artifacts. By empirically multiplying the current solar pressure model with a single coefficient (1.03 for TOPEX/Poseidon after 1993.57, and 0.96 before; and 1.08 for SPOT-2) estimated over a long time period, we can improve the measurement noise of the Z-geocenter component from 47.5 to 30.4 mm for the RMS and from 35 to 6 mm for the amplitude of the annual signal. However, the estimated SRP coefficient for SPOT-2 presents greater temporal variability, indicating that a new, dedicated solar radiation pressure model is still needed for precise geodetic applications. In addition, for the TOPEX satellite, a clear discontinuity of unknown cause is also detected on July 27, 1993.  相似文献

In the present study, The Landsat 7 ETM satellite data was collected for the Sittampundi anorthosites complex and digital image analysis was carried out. The anorthositic rocks available at Sittampundi complex is considered as an equivalent of lunar highland rocks. Hence, a remote sensing study comprises of image analysis and spectral profile analysis was carried out. The satellite data was digitally processed and generated various outputs like band combinations, color composites, stretched outputs, and PCA. The suitable processed outputs were identified for delineating the anorthosite complex. The diagnostic absorption features of reflectance spectra are the sensitive indicators of mineralogy and chemical composition of rocks, which are interest to the planetary scientists. The spectral profile of Landsat ETM plotted for pure and mixed anorthosite pixels and compared with the field and lab reflectance spectra. The percentages of image spectra vary from 30% to 60% for Sittampundi anorthosite. The spectral bands 2, 4 and 6 have low reflectance and bands 3 and 5 have high reflectance. The spectral range of bands 2,3,4,5 and 6 are 525 nm–605 nm, 630 nm–690 nm, 750 nm–900 nm, 1550 nm–1750 nm and 10400 nm–12500 nm respectively. The field spectral curve has weak absorptions at 650 nm and 1000 nm due to the iron transition absorption and low ca- pyroxene respectively available in the anorthosite, matching with the image spectra. However, hyperspectal image with narrow bandwidth could be more useful in selecting the suitable spectrum for remotely mapping the anorthosite region, as equivalent test site for lunar highland region.  相似文献

The geopotential coefficients of a number of recent and past models have been examined with the aim of calibrating their formal (or published) errors, principally by direct comparison with the same coefficients of a precise and wholly independent satellite-only reference field determined (in 2010) predominantly from over 7 years of μ/s low–low GRACE inter-satellite range rate observations (ITG-GRACE2010S). In all of these comparisons the reference field used, over specified spectral ranges, has much smaller reported errors than the ones to be calibrated. In particular we find that a recently published field (in 2010) using gravity gradient and position data from ESA’s GOCE satellite, GO_CONS_GCF_2_TIM_R1, has formal errors which are significantly optimistic for the lowest degrees (n) but with increasing realism where the gradiometer gains influence over the position information (15 < n < 120). Other GOCE models do not afford an unbiased error calibration. Validating error calibration with the independent reference model, of two past comprehensive fields (containing both satellite and surface data), confirms that one of them (JGM3, published in 1994, complete to n = 70) reported generally realistic formal errors while another (EGM96, published in 1998, complete to n = 360, tested only for n < 150) had significantly optimistic ones for most n < 100 but with better realism when affected only by the surface information.  相似文献

Impact of Earth radiation pressure on GPS position estimates   总被引:10,自引:8,他引:2
GPS satellite orbits available from the International GNSS Service (IGS) show a consistent radial bias of up to several cm and a particular pattern in the Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) residuals, which are suggested to be related to radiation pressure mismodeling. In addition, orbit-related frequencies were identified in geodetic time series such as apparent geocenter motion and station displacements derived from GPS tracking data. A potential solution to these discrepancies is the inclusion of Earth radiation pressure (visible and infrared) modeling in the orbit determination process. This is currently not yet considered by all analysis centers contributing to the IGS final orbits. The acceleration, accounting for Earth radiation and satellite models, is introduced in this paper in the computation of a global GPS network (around 200 IGS sites) adopting the analysis strategies from the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe (CODE). Two solutions covering 9 years (2000–2008) with and without Earth radiation pressure were computed and form the basis for this study. In previous studies, it has been shown that Earth radiation pressure has a non-negligible effect on the GPS orbits, mainly in the radial component. In this paper, the effect on the along-track and cross-track components is studied in more detail. Also in this paper, it is shown that Earth radiation pressure leads to a change in the estimates of GPS ground station positions, which is systematic over large regions of the Earth. This observed “deformation” of the Earth is towards North–South and with large scale patterns that repeat six times per GPS draconitic year (350 days), reaching a magnitude of up to 1 mm. The impact of Earth radiation pressure on the geocenter and length of day estimates was also investigated, but the effect is found to be less significant as compared to the orbits and position estimates.  相似文献

The review of study site have revealed the change in vegetation cover of Sal Dense to Sal Medium and Sal Open in 6 forest Mosaics owing to biotic and abiotic conditions prevailing in the specific areas. Analysis carried out using thematic map derived from aerial photograph of 1976 and satellite data of IRS 1C LISS III False Colour Composite (FCC) of March 1999 revealed the cause for change in forest density classes. Deforestation, encroachment and agriculture have been identified as the underlying causes, which have affected some specific locations to a marked extent. There has been a progressive and remarkable change among vegetation classes from 1976 to 1999. It is evident from forest type and density map that Sal density has significantly reduced from Sal Dense 65.61 % in 1976 to Sal Dense 11.12% in the year 1999 followed by Sal Open 11.18 % and Sal Medium 18.24 %. The overall change has been estimated to be 42.11% of the total forested area.  相似文献

Albedo determines radiation balance of land (soil-canopy complex) surface and influence boundary layer structure of the atmosphere. Accurate surface albedo determination is important for weather forecasting, climate projection and ecosystem modelling. Albedo-rainfall feedback relationship has not been studied so far using observations on spatial scale over Indian monsoon region due to lack of consistent, systematic and simultaneous long-term measurements of both. The present study used dekadal (ten-day) composite of satellite (e.g. NOAA) based Pathfinder AVHRR Land (PAL) datasets between 1981 and 2000 over India (68–100°E, 5–40°N) at 8 km spatial resolution. Land surface albedo was computed using linear transformation of red and near infrared (NIR) surface reflectances. The cloud effects were removed using a smoothening filter with harmonic analysis applied to time series data in each year. The monthly, annual and long term means were computed from dekadal reconstructed albedo. The mean per year and coefficient of variation (CV) of surface albedo over seventeen years, averaged over Indian land region, were found to show a significantly decreasing (0.15 to 0.14 and 60 to 40%, respectively) trend between 1981 and 2000. Among all the land use patterns, the inter-annual variation of albedo of Himalayan snow cover showed a significant and the steepest reducing trend (0.42 – 0.35) followed by open shurbland, grassland and cropland. No significant change was noticed over different forest types.. This could be due to increase in snow melting period and snow melt area. A strong inverse exponential relation (correlation coefficient r = 0.95, n = 100) was found between annual rainfall and annual albedo over seven rainfall zones. The decreasing trend in snow-albedo of accumulation period (September to March) follows the declining trend in measured south-west monsoon rainfall between 1988 (980 mm) to 1998 (880 mm) over India. This finding perhaps suggests the possible reversal of reported coupling of increased snowfall followed by lower monsoon rainfall.  相似文献
