The topographic features on Venus are named with female names: craters and paterae have names of famous women as well as female first names, non-crater features have names of mythological characters. The first 80 names appeared on the maps after the Pioneer Venus mission; about 300 more names after the Venera 15 and 16 missions. 376 features of 17 types are now named. All the names are listed with their coordinates and attribute data. A large number of new names will be necessary after the MAGELLAN mission when detailed maps will be produced for nearly the whole surface of Venus.'Geology and Tectonics of Venus', special issue edited by Alexander T. To improve the labelling value of meteoritic names, new meteorites should be assigned geographical names which are not used for other meteorites, which are simple, and, if possible, of mnemonic value. A Committee on Meteoritic Nomenclature should be established to supervise the assignment of new meteorite names, and to assist in the work necessary to confirm that new meteorite finds are not paired with meteorites which were previously cataloged.  相似文献

Inadvisable departures from tradition in naming newly mapped features on Mars, Mercury, and the Moon have been implemented and proposed since 1970. Functional need for place names also has become confused with cartographic convenience. Much of the resulting new nomenclature is neither unique, efficient, nor imaginative. The longstanding classical orientation in Solar System geography needs to be firmly reasserted. The Mädler scheme for designating smaller craters on the Moon should be retained and extended to the farside. Names of surface features on other bodies might best reflect the traditional connotations of planet and satellite names: for example, most crates on Mars would be named for mythical heroes and military personalities in ancient history, craters on Mercury might commemorate explorers or commercial luminaries, and features on Venus would bear the names of famous women.  相似文献

Six meteorites have been found in Castro County, Texas and named after the town of Nazareth, but each of the four classified specimens has been given two different full names. To clarify this, we have classified the other two specimens and helped to establish approved names for all six specimens. The classes and names of the six specimens, which probably come from six separate falls, are as follows: Nazareth (a), L6; Nazareth (b), L6; Nazareth (c), H5; Nazareth (d), H5; Nazareth (e), H6; Nazareth (iron), IIIA.  相似文献

The International Astronomical Union at its 2006 General Assembly in Prague has adopted a set of rules for meteor shower nomenclature, a working list with designated names (with IAU numbers and three-letter codes), and established a Task Group for Meteor Shower Nomenclature in Commission 22 (Meteors and Interplanetary Dust) to help define which meteor showers exist from well defined groups of meteoroids from a single parent body.  相似文献

Abstract— In this edition of the Meteoritical Bulletin, 1443 approved meteorite names with their relevant data are reported, one from a specific location within Africa, 211 from Northwest Africa, 5 from KOREAMET, 598 from the Chinese Antarctic Expedition, 23 from the Americas, 151 from Asia, three from Australia, two from Europe, two from NOVA, and 447 from ANSMET that were not reported in the Meteoritical Bulletin no. 87. Also reported are 4 falls from the Americas. Some highlights of approved meteorites are 10 lunar (including NWA 5000, an 11.528 kg sample), 3 Martian, 4 irons (one from Indonesia), 2 ureilites, 5 mesosiderites, 1 pallasite, 6 brachinites, 3 CV3s, 4 CO3s, 8 CMs, 12 CK3s, and many more. Finally, the Committee on Nomenclature of the Meteoritical Society announces two new names series in North America.  相似文献

This report presents bulk composition data for 10 lunar meteorite stones from Oman for which the names have been approved since June, 2012. On the basis of composition and reported find location, four new meteorites are represented among this group of stones. Data from neutron activation analysis of 371 subsamples of all lunar meteorites from Oman and Saudi Arabia analyzed in this laboratory are presented.  相似文献

Longitudes of surface marking observed on Mercury by E.M. Antoniadi are determined. The most frequent of the locations are used to determine the most probable positions on Mercury's surface for the names defined on Antoniadi's 88-day planisphere. It is suggested that these locations can serve as a valid and accurate basis for Mercurian nomenclature.  相似文献

Abstract— Currently, 44 distinct meteorites are recorded from the Nullarbor Region in Western Australia. Recovery data for the Billygoat Donga, Cardanumbi, Cocklebiddy, Forrest Lakes, Laundry East, Lookout Hill, North East Reid, North Reid, Reid, Webb, West Forrest, West Reid and Yayjinna meteorites are amended, and North Forrest is recognized as distinct from North West Forrest (H). Since 1971, the recovery of more than 500 specimens (predominantly ordinary chondrites) from the desert has made the Nullarbor Region one of the most productive areas of the world for meteorite recoveries and has caused major problems for meteorite nomenclature. To overcome a lack of geographical names, we have delineated a grid of 47 named ‘areas’ in the Nullarbor Region. Henceforth, distinct meteorites will take the name of the ‘area’ in which they are found and a number (e.g., 001) in order of discovery. In general, the names of past recoveries remain unchanged. The absence of transportation processes in the region, and accurate documentation of the distribution of finds allows ‘pairing’ of specimens to at least 90% level of confidence.  相似文献

A summary is given about the Minor Planet survey performed in 1985 on Tautenburg Schmidt plates. There were discovered 95 asteroids and calculated 168 positions for them. These are 20 numbered objects and 75 asteroids with provisional designations, two of them have no new designation. Tautenburg observations could give a tribute to twelve planets numbered in the period of this report. Two asteroids discovered in Tautenburg have received numbers and names: (3245) Jensch = 1973 UL5 and (3338) Richter = 1973 UX5.  相似文献

Abstract– In this edition of The Meteoritical Bulletin, a total of 506 newly approved meteorite names with their relevant data are reported. These include 354 from northwest Africa, 31 from the Americas, 15 from Antarctica (Koreamet), 85 from Asia, 20 from Australia, and 1 from Europe. Among these meteorites are 2 falls, Grimsby (Canada) and Santa Lucia (2008) (Argentina). Also described are a CM with low degree of alteration, new ungrouped chondrites and achondrites, and 4 Martian meteorites.  相似文献

This paper is the first of a set of four, in which we shall develop the first part of a project dedicated to elaborating a Hamiltonian theory for the rotational motion of a deformable Earth. Here we study only the perturbation due to the deformation of the elastic mantle by tidal body force. In the present paper, we define two canonical systems of variables—we give these variables the names of elastic variables of Euler and Andoyer respectively. Next, using them, we obtain the canonical expression of rotational kinetic energy, which is valid for any Earth model satisfying hypotheses as general as those established in Section 2.  相似文献

Abstract— To date, 24 possibly distinct meteorites have been reported from the Nullarbor Region in South Australia and many more recoveries remain to be described. Following Bevan and Binns (1989), the system of nomenclature for meteorites from the Western Australian Nullarbor has been extended into the South Australian Nullarbor. For the purposes of nomenclature, the South Australian Nullarbor has been divided into 27 named “areas.” Henceforth, distinct meteorites will take the name of the area in which they were found and a number (e.g., 001). The names of previously documented meteorites from the region remain unchanged.  相似文献

In the five years from June, 1967, to June, 1972, a total of 99 meteorites were found in Roosevelt County, New Mexico and in adjoining Curry County. Of this number, 74 were found by one man. The finds include two achondrites, one pallasite, one carbonaceous chondrite, and 95 chondrites. They appear to represent more than 50 separate meteorite falls. The finding of a large number of meteorites in a small area provides data for an estimate of the probable quantity and average size of the meteorite specimens reaching the earth. The problems involved in allocating a total of 17 available local place names among more than 50 meteorite falls are discussed.  相似文献

The Indonesian meteorites, Selakopi, an H-5 chondrite, and Glanggang, a breccia with H-6 fragments is an H-5 chondritic matrix, were recovered on the same day from sites only 50 km apart. The textures and compositions of Selakopi and the H-5 portion of Glanggang are very similar, indicating that they are closely related. The bulk chemistry of the H-6 portion of Glanggang is also very similar to that of the samples mentioned. It has therefore been concluded that Selakopi and the Glanggang breccia fragments were derived from the same source area and were probably ejected at the same time. Minor differences in bulk composition and texture among the three samples may be attributed to local variations on the parent body. However, for reasons stipulated in the conclusion, we recommend that separate names be maintained for these meteorites until further, more definitive investigations have been made.  相似文献
