The great strengthening the material undergoes under high confining pressure, and jet pattern of matter outflowing from large impact craters make possible the ejection of asteroid-size bodies from the Earth into space. The ejected bodies, after gaining energy in planetary perturbations, may fall back with a velocity higher than that of their ejection. This solves, in particular, the problem of shower bombardments with ~ 25 Myr interval (Drobyshevski, Sov. Astron. Let. 16(3), 193, 1990), and a question arises whether this process could become self-sustained, like a chain reaction, when secondary impacts release an energy higher than that of primary impact. Estimates show that such a possibility could have been realized for Mercury (Drobyshevski, Lunar Planet. Sci. Conf. Abstr. 23(1), 317, 1992) due to its low escape and high orbital velocities. Self-sustained bombardment can account for the loss of the silicate mantle from Mercury. The energy and angular momentum conservation laws imply that its orbit contracted toward the Sun in the course of ejection of the mantle fragments by Mercury's perturbations beyond its orbit. Straight-forward calculations show the initial orbit to have practically coincided with the Venusian orbit. This puts the old hypothesis of Mercury being a lost satellite of Venus on a solid ground and provides an explanation for many facts from the origin of the Imbrium bombardment to the observed locks in the axial and orbital rotation of Mercury, Venus, and the Earth.  相似文献

It is suggested that the slow rotations of Mercury and Venus may be connected with the absence of natural satellites around them. If Mercury or Venus possessed a satellite at the time of formation, the tidal evolution would have caused the satellite to recede. At a sufficiently large distance from the planet, the Sun's gravitational influence makes the satellite orbit unstable. The natural satellites of Mercury and Venus might have escaped as a consequence of this instability.  相似文献

Models of the solar nebula suggest that the mass of solid matter which condensed in the region of Mars and the asteroids was much greater than the amount now present. Bombardment by a primordial population of asteroidal bodies originating near Jupiter's orbit could preferentially remove matter from this region, without significant effects in the Earth's zone. A “critical velocity” exists, for which they can be ejected from the solar system by Jupiter. The minimum perihelion attainable at this velocity lies between the orbits of Mars and the Earth. The lifetimes of Mars-crossing bodies are limited by collisions with Jupiter; Earth-crossers are ejected on a much shorter time scale. The total bombardment flux was at least two orders of magnitude greater in the zone of Mars than in that of the Earth. The flux at Venus and Mercury from this source was negligible. The cratering rate for Mars may have differed greatly from those of the other terrestrial planets for a significant fraction of the age of the solar system.  相似文献

More than 490 elliptical aerobraking and science phasing orbits made by Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) in 1997 and 1998 provide unprecedented coverage of the solar wind in the vicinity of the orbits of the martian moons Phobos and Deimos. We have performed a comprehensive survey of magnetic field perturbations in the solar wind to search for possible signatures of solar wind interaction with dust or gas escaping from the moons. A total of 1246 solar wind disturbance events were identified and their distribution was examined relative to Phobos, the Phobos orbit, and the Deimos orbit. We find that the spatial distribution of solar wind perturbations does not increase near or downstream of Phobos, Phobos’ orbit, or Deimos’ orbit, which would have been expected if there is significant outgassing or dust escape from the martian moons. Of the 1246 magnetic field perturbation events found in the MGS data set, 11 events were found within 2000 km of the Phobos orbit, while three events were found within 2000 km of the Deimos orbit. These events were analyzed in detail and found to likely have other causes than outgassing/dust escape from the martian moons. Thus we conclude that the amount of gas/dust escaping the martian moons is not significant enough to induce detectable magnetic field perturbations in the solar wind. In essence we have not found any clear evidence in the MGS magnetic field data for outgassing or dust escape from the martian moons.  相似文献

Asteroid 2201 Oljato passed through perihelion inside the orbit of Venus near the time of its conjunction with Venus in 1980, 1983, and 1986. During those three years, many interplanetary field enhancements (IFEs) were observed by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) in the longitude sector where the orbit of Oljato lies inside Venus' orbit. We attribute IFEs to clouds of fine‐scale, possibly highly charged dust picked up by the solar wind after an interplanetary collision between objects in the diameter range of 10–1000 m. We interpret the increase rate in IFEs at PVO in these years as due to material in Oljato's orbit colliding with material in, or near to, Venus' orbital plane and producing a dust‐anchored structure in the interplanetary magnetic field. In March 2012, almost 30 yr later, with Venus Express (VEX) now in orbit, the Oljato‐Venus geometry is similar to the one in 1980. Here, we compare IFEs detected by VEX and PVO using the same IFE identification criteria. We find an evolution with time of the IFE rate. In contrast to the results in the 1980s, the recent VEX observations reveal that at solar longitudes in which the Oljato orbit is inside that of Venus, the IFE rate is reduced to the level even below the rate seen at solar longitudes where Oljato's orbit is outside that of Venus. This observation implies that Oljato not only lost its co‐orbiting material but also disrupted the “target material,” with which the co‐orbiting material was colliding, near Venus.  相似文献

Abstract— We have examined the fate of impact ejecta liberated from the surface of Mercury due to impacts by comets or asteroids, in order to study 1) meteorite transfer to Earth, and 2) reaccumulation of an expelled mantle in giant‐impact scenarios seeking to explain Mercury's large core. In the context of meteorite transfer during the last 30 Myr, we note that Mercury's impact ejecta leave the planet's surface much faster (on average) than other planets in the solar system because it is the only planet where impact speeds routinely range from 5 to 20 times the planet's escape speed; this causes impact ejecta to leave its surface moving many times faster than needed to escape its gravitational pull. Thus, a large fraction of Mercurian ejecta may reach heliocentric orbit with speeds sufficiently high for Earth‐crossing orbits to exist immediately after impact, resulting in larger fractions of the ejecta reaching Earth as meteorites. We calculate the delivery rate to Earth on a time scale of 30 Myr (typical of stony meteorites from the asteroid belt) and show that several percent of the high‐speed ejecta reach Earth (a factor of 2–3 less than typical launches from Mars); this is one to two orders of magnitude more efficient than previous estimates. Similar quantities of material reach Venus. These calculations also yield measurements of the re‐accretion time scale of material ejected from Mercury in a putative giant impact (assuming gravity is dominant). For Mercurian ejecta escaping the gravitational reach of the planet with excess speeds equal to Mercury's escape speed, about one third of ejecta reaccretes in as little as 2 Myr. Thus collisional stripping of a silicate proto‐Mercurian mantle can only work effectively if the liberated mantle material remains in small enough particles that radiation forces can drag them into the Sun on time scale of a few million years, or Mercury would simply re‐accrete the material.  相似文献

The perturbed motion of comet Halley and comet Mackholz 1 1986 VIII was investigated within a time interval of about 20 millennia. The minimal distance of 0.043 AU between P/Halley and Venus may occur on April 4, 4868 AD. The distance of 0.036 AU between P/Halley and Jupiter will take place on April 1, 6616 AD. The orbit of P/Machholz 1 crosses the orbits of Mercury and Venus eight times, that of the Earth six or eight times, and the orbit of Mars four times per a period of advance of the argument of perihelion. A distance of about 0.06 AU between P/Machholz 1 and the Earth may take place in August 2576 AD and 5751 AD and in February 4770 AD. The minimal comet-Earth distance of 0.035 AU occurs on September 14, 5971 AD. The closest encounter between P/Machholz 1 and Jupiter at the distance of 0.098 AU may be in May 4499 AD. These results may be considered as a forecast of possible collisions.  相似文献

The motion of a satellite with negligible mass in the Schwarzschild metric is treated as a problem in Newtonian physics. The relativistic equations of motion are formally identical with those of the Newtonian case of a particle moving in the ordinary inverse-square law field acted upon by a disturbing function which varies asr ?3. Accordingly, the relativistic motion is treated with the methods of celestial mechanics. The disturbing function is expressed in terms of the Keplerian elements of the orbit and substituted into Lagrange's planetary equations. Integration of the equations shows that a typical Earth satellite with small orbital eccentricity is displaced by about 17 cm from its unperturbed position after a single orbit, while the periodic displacement over the orbit reaches a maximum of about 3 cm. Application of the equations to the planet Mercury gives the advance of the perihelion and a total displacement of about 85 km after one orbit, with a maximum periodic displacement of about 13 km.  相似文献

Data from the magnetometer MAG aboard the Venus Express S/C are investigated for the occurrence of cyclotron wave phenomena upstream of the Venus bow shock. For an unmagnetized planet such as Venus and Mars the neutral exosphere extends into the on-flowing solar wind and pick-up processes can play an important role in the removal of particles from the atmosphere. At Mars upstream proton cyclotron waves were observed but at Venus they were not yet detected. From the MAG data of the first 4 months in orbit we report the occurrence of proton cyclotron waves well upstream from the planet, both outside and inside of the planetary foreshock region; pick-up protons generate specific cyclotron waves already far from the bow shock. This provides direct evidence that the solar wind is removing hydrogen from the Venus exosphere. Determining the role the solar wind plays in the escape of particles from the total planetary atmosphere is an important step towards understanding the evolution of the environmental conditions on Venus. The continual observations of the Venus Express mission will allow mapping the volume of escape more accurately, and determine better the present rate of hydrogen loss.  相似文献

Among the very few tabulated asteroids with perihelion inside or closely outside the Earth's orbit some have periods nearly commensurable with the Earth's. The perturbed orbit of one of these, 1685 Toro, has been integrated over 1200 years. The results show that Toro is at present captured in resonance with the Earth and also that Venus has a drastic influence on the orbital elements. Toro's orbit is librating with a main period of 800 years and peak-to-peak amplitude of about 65°. The mechanism of libration is discussed.Paper dedicated to Professor Hannes Alfvén on the occasion of his 70th birthday, 30 May 1978.  相似文献

The paper is focused on the estimate of the impact of the non-gravitational perturbations on the orbit of the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO), one of the two spacecrafts that will be placed in orbit around the innermost planet of the solar system by the BepiColombo space mission. The key rôle of the Italian Spring Accelerometer (ISA), that has been selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) to fly on-board the MPO, is outlined. In the first part of the paper, through a numerical simulation and analysis we have estimated, over a time span of several years, the long-period behaviours of the disturbing accelerations produced by the incoming direct solar radiation pressure, and the indirect effects produced by Mercury’s albedo. The variations in the orbital parameters of the spacecraft, together with their spectral contents, have been estimated over the analysed period. The direct solar radiation pressure represents the strongest non-gravitational perturbation on the MPO in the very complex radiation environment of Mercury. The order-of-magnitude of this acceleration is quite high, about 10?6 m/s2, because of the proximity to the Sun and the large area-to-mass ratio of the spacecraft. In the second part of the paper, we concentrated upon the short-period effects of direct solar radiation pressure and Mercury’s albedo. In particular, the disturbing accelerations have been compared with the ISA measurement error and the advantages of an on-board accelerometer are highlighted with respect to the best modelling of the non-gravitational perturbations in the strong radiation environment of Mercury. A mechanism capable of accounting for the large mean eccentricity (0.175) and inclination (7°.2) of Mercury is discussed. Provided the gravitational field of the rapidly rotating primordial Sun had a sufficiently large second degree harmonic (i.e., J2 ? order 10?3), subsequent solar spin down would drive the orbit of Mercury through two secular resonances with Venus, one involving the precession of the line of apsides, the other one involving the regression of the nodal line. Resonance passage generates contributions to the eccentricity and inclination that are proportional to the square root of the characteristic solar spin down time. We find that an initial solar rotation l period of P ? 512hr guarantees passage through resonance and that a spin down time of τ = Ω|dΩ/dt|?1 of order 106 years could have produced the observed eccentricity and inclination. Such a primordial rotation rate is comparable to the measured rotations of very young stars and the spin down time appears consistent with the time scale derived for magnetic braking of the Sun's rotation by an intense solar wind during a T-Tauri stage of solar evolution.  相似文献

The orbital evolutions of the asteroid 3040 Kozai and model asteroids with similar orbits have been investigated. Their osculating orbits for an epoch 1991 December 10 were numerically integrated forward within the interval of 20,000 years, using a dynamical model of the solar system consisting of all inner planets, Jupiter, and Saturn. The orbit of the asteroid Kozai is stable. Its motion is affected only by long-period perturbations of planets. With change of the argument of perihelion of the asteroid Kozai, the evolution of the model asteroid orbits changes essentially, too. The model orbits with the argument of perihelion changed by the order of 10% show that asteroids with such orbital parameters may approach the Earth orbit, while asteroids with larger changes may even cross it, at least after 10,000 years. Long-term orbital evolution of asteroids with these orbital parameters is very sensitive on their angular elements.  相似文献

On the basis of works of King and Innanen, the limiting direct and retrograde orbits around the planets Mercury and Venus have been calculated. Synthesizing this concept with the concept of synchronous orbits around the planets and tidal drags acting within them it is shown that Venus may not have retained any satellite direct or retrograde but Mercury may have retained a retrograde satellite at a distance between 225000 and 252700 km from its center. It is urged that this satellite may be investigated observationally.  相似文献

Large scale chaos is present everywhere in the solar system. It plays a major role in the sculpting of the asteroid belt and in the diffusion of comets from the outer region of the solar system. All the inner planets probably experienced large scale chaotic behavior for their obliquities during their history. The Earth obliquity is presently stable only because of the presence of the Moon, and the tilt of Mars undergoes large chaotic variations from 0° to about 60°. On billion years time scale, the orbits of the planets themselves present strong chaotic variations which can lead to the escape of Mercury or collision with Venus in less than 3.5 Gyr. The organization of the planets in the solar system thus seems to be strongly related to this chaotic evolution, reaching at all time a state of marginal stability, that is practical stability on a time-scale comparable to its age. This lecture was given at the XIth International Congress of Mathematical Physics, Paris, july 1994  相似文献

Kumar's (1977) suggestion that the slow rotations of Mercury and Venus are in part due to natural satellites that subsequently escaped is discussed. A more useful criterion for the escape of such satellites than that previously proposed is derived, and it is shown that this distance is sufficiently small for Mercury and Venus to make the escape of satellites a likely possibility.  相似文献

Luni-solar perturbations of an Earth satellite   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Luni-solar perturbations of the orbit of an artificial Earth satellite are given by modifying the analytical theory of an artificial lunar satellite derived by the author in recent papers. Expressions for the first-order changes, both secular and periodic, in the elements of the geocentric Keplerian orbit of the earth satellite are given, the moon's geocentric orbit, including solar perturbations in it, being found by using Brown's lunar theory. The effects of Sun and Moon on the satellite orbit are described to a high order of accuracy so that the theory may be used for distant earth satellites.  相似文献

Mercury holds answers to several critical questions regarding the formation and evolution of the terrestrial planets. These questions include the origin of Mercury's anomalously high ratio of metal to silicate and its implications for planetary accretion processes, the nature of Mercury's geological evolution and interior cooling history, the mechanism of global magnetic field generation, the state of Mercury's core, and the processes controlling volatile species in Mercury's polar deposits, exosphere, and magnetosphere. The MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) mission has been designed to fly by and orbit Mercury to address all of these key questions. After launch by a Delta 2925H-9.5, two flybys of Venus, and two flybys of Mercury, orbit insertion is accomplished at the third Mercury encounter. The instrument payload includes a dual imaging system for wide and narrow fields-of-view, monochrome and color imaging, and stereo; X-ray and combined gamma-ray and neutron spectrometers for surface chemical mapping; a magnetometer; a laser altimeter; a combined ultraviolet–visible and visible-near-infrared spectrometer to survey both exospheric species and surface mineralogy; and an energetic particle and plasma spectrometer to sample charged species in the magnetosphere. During the flybys of Mercury, regions unexplored by Mariner 10 will be seen for the first time, and new data will be gathered on Mercury's exosphere, magnetosphere, and surface composition. During the orbital phase of the mission, one Earth year in duration, MESSENGER will complete global mapping and the detailed characterization of the exosphere, magnetosphere, surface, and interior.  相似文献

The evolution of the perihelion distance distribution in the Oort cloud was studied over the age of the solar system, under the gravitational perturbations of random passing stars, using a statistical approach. These perturbations are accounted for through an empirical relation relating the change in cometary perihelion distance to the closest-approach comet-star distance; this relation is deduced from a previous study [H. Scholl, A. Cazenave, and A. Brahic, Astron. Astrophys.112, 157–166 (1982)]. Two kinds of initial perihelion distances are considered: (a) perihelion distances <2500 AU, associated with an origin of comets as icy planetesimals in the region of the giant planets, and (b) larger perihelion distances (up to 5 × 104 AU), possibly representative of comet formation as satellite fragments in the accretion disk of the primitive solar nebula. Distant star-comet encounters, as well as rare close encounters, are considered. Several quantities are estimated: (i) number of “new” comets entering into the planetary region, (ii) number of comets escaping the Sun sphere of influence or lost by hyperbolic ejection and (iii) percentage of total comet loss over the age of the solar system. From these quantities, the current and original cloud populations are deduced, as well as the corresponding cloud mass, for the two types of formation scenarios.  相似文献
