Nearly simultaneous photometry of the reflected and thermal infrared spectra of periodic comets Encke, Chernykh, Kearns-Kwee, Stephan-Oterma, and Tuttle are presented. The 10-μm, silicate emission feature has been detected for the first time in periodic comets and was observed in three of these objects. The albedo of the dust particles in the comae of these comets is calculted and compared to that of Comet Kohoutek. The peculiar behavior of the dust in Comet Encke is discussed.  相似文献

We report broadband infrared photometry of comets P/Stephan-Oterma and Bowell between 1 and 20 μm. Their JHK colors are similar to P/Meier and P/Tuttle and are compatible with scattering of sunlight by micron-sized grains. The thermal emission from P/Stephan-Oterma showed an effective temperature significantly higher than that expected from a blackbody in equilibrium. The thermal emission can be models be fit by models of the dust coma consisting of micron-sized grains. Most of the flux at all observed wavelengths comes from the dust grains rather than form the nucleus.  相似文献

Ultraviolet absorption by H2O and other species in the comae of comets could be detected by studying, with satellite telescope-spectrometers, the occultation of hot stars by comets. Such observations could produce the first direct detection of H2O, the fundamental parent molecule in comet comae, and give measures of molecular level populations. The first instrument suitable for such observations will be the High Resolution Spectrograph on Space Telescope and, therefore, we consider its capabilities. We have used a Haser model to estimate the molecular column densities and to predict equivalent widths for lines of H2O, OH, CO, and O as functions of time and angular distance from a comet with a high H2O production rate. We have determined the minimum detectable equivalent widths, and therefore, the maximum angular separation from such a comet at which H2O, OH, and CO could be studied. A conservative, statistical estimate shows that comets with high water production rates should pass near enough to about 10 to 100 stars suitable for absorption studies of the CX band of H2O (1240 Å). Estimated equivalent widths for CO, OH, and the resonance lines of C and O indicate that these species may also be detected.  相似文献

We report on simultaneous optical and infrared observations of the Halley Family comet 8P/Tuttle performed with the ESO Very Large Telescope. Such multi-wavelength and coordinated observations are a good example of what can be done to support space missions. From high resolution optical spectroscopy of the CN (0,0) 388 nm and NH2 (0,9,0) 610 nm bands using UVES at UT2 we determined 12C/13C = 90 ± 10 and 14N/15N = 150 ± 20 in CN and we derived a nuclear spin temperature of NH3 of 29 ± 1 K. These values are similar to those found in Oort-Cloud and Jupiter Family comets. From low resolution long slit spectroscopy with FORS1 at UT2 we determined the CN, C3 and C2 production rates and the parent and daughter scale lengths up to 5.2 105 km tailward. From high resolution IR spectroscopy with CRIRES at UT1 we measured simultaneously the production rates and mixing ratios of H2O, HCN, C2H2, CH4, C2H6, and CH3OH.  相似文献

The intensities of radiation from the inner comas of comets which are composed primarily of water and carbon monoxide have been calculated. Only “airglow” emissions initiated by the absorption of extreme ultraviolet radiation have been considered. The photoionizations of H2O, CO, CO2, and N2 are the most important emission sources, although photoelectron excitation is also considered. Among the emission features for which intensities were calculated are H2O+ (A?2A1?X?2B1), CO+ (first negative), CO (fourth positive), CO (Cameron), CO2+ (B?2?u?X?2IIg), N2 (Vegard-Kaplan), N2+ (first negative), and OI (1304 Å). In the inner coma (collision region) these airglow mechanisms are shown to be possible competitors with the usually assumed resonance scattering and flourescence excitation mechanisms which are appropriate for the outer coma and tail.  相似文献

We present millimeter-wave observations of HNCO, HC3N, SO, NH2CHO, H13CN, and H3O+ in comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp)obtained in February–April, 1997 with the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (CSO). HNCO, first detected at the CSO in comet C/1996B2 (Hyakutake), is securely confirmed in comet Hale-Bopp via observations of three rotational transitions. The derived abundance with respect to H2O is (4-13) × 10-4. HC3N, SO, and NH2CHO are detected for the first time in a comet. The fractional abundance of HC3N based on observations of three rotational lines is (1.9 ± 0.2) × 10-4. Four transitions of SO are detected and the derived fractional abundance, (2-8) ×10-3, is higher than the upper limits derived from UV observations of previous comets. Observations of NH2CHO imply a fractional abundance of (1-8) × 10-4. H3O is detected for the first time from the ground. The H13CN (3-2)transition is also detected and the derived HCN/H13CN abundance ratio is 90 ± 15, consistent with the terrestrial12C/13C ratio. In addition, a number of other molecular species are detected, including HNC, OCS, HCO+, CO+, and CN(the last two are first detections in a comet at radio wavelengths). This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We extend the microscopic approach developed for proton energy deposition in N2 to the general case of proton bombardment of a polar atmosphere composed of N2, O2 and O. We calculate the volume emission rates of various N2+, O2, O2+ and OI emissions that would be encountered in a typical PCA event. Our results demonstrate that the ratios of I(5577)I(3914) and I(6300)I(3914) are strongly depe spectra considered.  相似文献

We have obtained spectra of Pluto on six nights during February 1979 using the Cassegrain Digicon spectrograph on the 2.1-m Struve reflector and the IDS spectrograph on the 2.7-m reflector of McDonald Observatory. These spectra, with nominal resolution of 6–7 Å, have been reduced to relative fluxes. Relative albedos were then calculated using the solar irradiances of Arvesen et al. (1969). The spectra taken in the blue show no indication of the upturn in albedo at λ < 3800 A? previously reported by Fix et al. (1970). The lack of a uv upturn cannot be interpreted in terms of a Rayleigh scattering atmosphere unless the albedo of the underlying surface is known. From the lack of methane absorption at the wavelength of the 6190- or 7270-Å methane bands we derive an upper limit of 1–3 m-am of gaseous CH4. The albedo curve has a constant slope between 3500 and 7300 Å. The only other solar system body which has this feature is an S-type asteroid.  相似文献

Optical spectra of the cleft aurora in the region 5000–8500 Å were measured in December, 1977 at Cape Parry, N.W.T. A Michelson interferometer was used at a resolution of 10 cm?1. The auroral features observed were OI (5577, 6300-64, 7774, 8446 Å), OII (7319-30 Å), NI (5200 Å), Hα, O2 atm (1,1), some weak N21P bands and possibly some Meinel bands of N2+. In addition, nightglow emissions of Na and OH were observed. Theoretical predictions of the OI and NI emission rates using the model of Link et al. (1980) fit the observed rates reasonably well if a 40 eV Maxwellian incident electron spectrum is assumed. The predicted rates for OII exceed the observed value by a factor of 4. It is suggested that the ionization cross-section may be over-estimated.  相似文献

The University of Wisconsin–Madison and NASA–Goddard conducted acomprehensive multi-wavelength observing campaign of coma emissionsfrom comet Hale–Bopp, including OH 3080 Å, [O I] 6300 Å H2O+ 6158 Å, H Balmer-α 6563 Å, NH2 6330 Å, [C I] 9850 ÅCN 3879 Å, C2 5141 Å, C3 4062 Å,C I 1657 Å, and the UV and optical continua. In thiswork, we concentrate on the results of the H2O daughter studies. Our wide-field OH 3080 Å measured flux agrees with other, similarobservations and the expected value calculated from published waterproduction rates using standard H2O and OH photochemistry. However, the total [O I] 6300 Å flux determined spectroscopically overa similar field-of-view was a factor of 3-4 higher than expected.Narrow-band [O I] images show this excess came from beyond theH2O scale length, suggesting either a previously unknown source of[O I] or an error in the standard OH + ν→ O(1 D) + H branching ratio. The Hale–Bopp OH and[O I] distributions, both of which were imaged tocometocentric distances >1 × 106 km, were more spatiallyextended than those of comet Halley (after correcting for brightnessdifferences), suggesting a higher bulk outflow velocity. Evidence ofthe driving mechanism for this outflow is found in the Hα lineprofile, which was narrower than in comet Halley (though likelybecause of opacity effects, not as narrow as predicted by Monte-Carlomodels). This is consistent with greater collisional coupling betweenthe suprathermal H photodissociation products and Hale–Bopp's densecoma. Presumably because of mass loading of the solar wind by ionsand ions by the neutrals, the measured acceleration of H2O+ downthe ion tail was much smaller than in comet Halley. Tailwardextensions in the azimuthal distributions of OH 3080 Å,[O I], and [C I] , as well as a Doppler asymmetry in the[O I] line profile, suggest ion-neutral coupling. While thetailward extension in the OH can be explained by increased neutralacceleration, the [O I] 6300 Å and [C I] 9850 Å emissions show 13%and >200% excesses in this direction (respectively), suggesting anon-negligible contribution from dissociative recombination of CO+and/or electron collisional excitation. Thus, models including theeffects of photo- and collisional chemistry are necessary for the fullinterpretation of these data.  相似文献

The phase function ω?(1 + a cos θ) for anisotropic scattering is applied to a homogeneous atmospheric model to ascertain the effects of anisotropy on the near-infrared spectrum of Venus. L. D. G. Young's equivalent widths for the 820 Å CO2 band are analyzed to derive allowed combinations of CO2 specific abundance, continuum albedo, pressure, and degree of anisotropy. From these combinations, values are derived for the photon mean-free path and total optical thickness of the clouds. The Venera 10 measurement of the transmitted flux at 7200 Å is then used in conjunction with spherical albedo requirements to reduce the range of possible solutions to the equivalent-width analysis. Through the application of approximate similarity relations, the “true” (i.e., anisotropic) atmospheric parameters are derived from the isotropic values. For an assumed Mie scatterer with an average anisotropy factor of 〈cos θ〉 = 0.7, the results indicate a total optical thickness of about 55 with a single-scattering albedo of 0.9992 to 0.9995.  相似文献

From published ground-base, spacecraft, and rocket photometry and polarimetry of the zodiacal light, a number of optical and physical parameters have been derived. It was assumed that the number density, mean particle size, and albedo vary with heliocentric distance, and shown that average individual interplanetary particles have a small but definite opposition effect, a mean single-scattering albedo in the V band at 1-AU heliocentric distance of 0.09 ± 0.01, and a zero-phase geometric albedo of 0.04. Modeled by a power law, both albedos decrease with increasing heliocentric distance as r?0.54. The corresponding exponents for changes in mean particle size and number density are related in a simple way. The median orbital inclination of zodiacal light particles with respect to the ecliptic is 12°, close to the observed median value for faint asteroids and short-period comets. Furthermore, the color of dust particles and its variation with solar phase angle closely resemble those of C asteroids. These findings are, at least, consistent with the zodiacal cloud originating primarily from collisions among asteroids. Finally, a value of ?1018?ErmE g was derived for the mass of the zodiacal cloud, where ?E is the mean particle radius (in micrometers) at 1-AU-heliocentric distance. For extinction in the ecliptic, Δm = 10?5??12mag was obtained, where ? is the solar elongation in degrees.  相似文献

Photometers on the ISIS-II spacecraft provide a view of the atomic oxygen 5577 and 6300 Å emissions and the N2+ 3914 A? emission detected as dayside aurora in the magnetospheric cleft region. The 6300 Å emission forms a continuous and permanent band across the noon sector, at about 78° invariant latitude, with a defined region of maximum intensity that is never less than 2kR (uncorrected for albedo), and is centred near magnetic noon. There are significant differences in the intensity patterns on either side of noon and their responses to geomagnetic activity. Discrete 3914 Å auroral forms appear within this region, at preferred locations that cannot be precisely specified, but which tend to the poleward edge of the 6300 Å emission in the evening, and the equatorward edge in the morning where the difference between the two emissions is greatest. It is concluded that the discrete auroras observed by all-sky cameras in the day sector do follow the 6300 Å emission through the cleft region, though a definite cleft boundary is not defined. Substantial 6300 Å emission having a peak intensity near noon is also seen in the low latitude “outer auroral belt”, while the diffuse 3914 Å emission tends to show a relative minimum near noon. On the morning side the 3914 Å intensity is displaced to lower latitude and earlier local times, compared to the 6300 Å emission.  相似文献

A summary is presented of our spectroscopic survey of comets extending for roughly 19 years from 1985 to 2004 comprising data for 92 comets of which 50 showed good emissions. All data were re-analyzed using consistent reduction techniques. Our observations of comets over several apparitions and comets observed over an extended period indicate no major changes in compositional classification. To our regret, no major unidentified cometary features were found in our surveyed spectral region of 5200-10400 Å. Absolute production rates for the dominant parent molecule H2O and the daughter species C2, NH2 and CN are determined within the limits of the Haser model as are values for the dust continuum, Afρ. From these data, production rate ratios are calculated for C2/H2O, NH2/H2O, CN/H2O and Afρ/H2O. Excluding the odd Comets Yanaka (1988r), 43P/Wolf-Harrington and 19P/Borrelly, with unusual spectra, our set of comets exhibited relatively uniform composition. Detailed analyses of our data resulted in four taxonomic classes:
-
Comets of typical composition (∼70%); exhibiting typical ratios with respect to water of C2, NH2, and CN.
-
Tempel 1 type (∼22%); having a deficiency in C2 but normal NH2 abundance.
-
G-Z type (∼6%); having both low C2 and NH2 ratios.
-
The unusual object Yanaka (1988r) (∼2%?); no detectable C2 or CN emission but normal NH2.
It is uncertain whether there is a clear separation between the comets of typical composition and those with C2 depletion, or whether the latter consists of a group showing a continuum of decreasing C2/CN ratios. Our spectroscopic investigations result in a visual record of the various compositional classes, which are illustrated in a number of figures. Production rate comparisons with the comet photometry program of Schleicher and A'Hearn [A'Hearn, M.F., and 4 colleagues, 1995. Icarus 118, 223-270] for 13 comets in common yielded good agreement once the different scale lengths are taken into account. An investigation into the possible origin of our compositional groups with respect to dynamical families of comets shows that the Halley family exhibits essentially no C2 depletion. These objects were presumably formed in the region of Saturn and Uranus and scattered into the Oort cloud. Comets formed in the space near Neptune, responsible for the scattered Kuiper Belt show a mixture of “typical” and C2 depleted objects, while we associate comets formed in-situ in the classical Kuiper belt with our C2 depleted group.  相似文献

Observations of Comet P/Stephan-Oterma were made with an Intensified Dissector Scanner spectrograph on the McDonald Observatory 2.7-m telescope during the period from July 1980 to February 1981. These spectra cover a range of heliocentric distances from 2.3 AU preperihelion to 1.8 AU postperihelion. A small aperture was used to map the spatial distributions of the gases in the coma. Column densities of the observed cometary emissions (CN, C3, CH, and C2) were calculated and it is shown that Stephan-Oterma appeared nearly spherically symmetric. These date are used by Cochran (1985, Icarus62, 82–92) to constrain chemical models of Stephan-Oterma.  相似文献

Spectropolarimetry of Jupiter at resolutions between 22 and 35 Å reveals a strong increase of linear polarization in the 7250-A? CH4 band. This is very probably due to the decreasing contribution toward the band center of the higher orders of scattering, which have a smaller net polarization than the first few orders. The linear polarization is also enhanced in the band at 7900 A? comprising the 7920-A? NH3 and 7600- to 8200-A? CH4 bands. The normalized circular polarization shows a feature at 7250 A? with a dispersion shape. This is most probably produced in a double-scattering process involving either a solid or liquid aerosol with an absorption at 7250 A?. Methane aerosols, the obvious candidates from a spectroscopic point of view, are, however, forbidden if current estimates of the Jovian atmospheric temperature are correct.  相似文献

Laboratory band-model absorption coefficients of CH4 are used to calculate the Uranus spectrum from 5400 to 10,400 Å. A good fit of both strong and weak bands for the Uranus spectrum over the entire wavelength interval is achieved for the first time. Three different atmospheric models are employed: a reflecting layer model, a homogeneous scattering layer model, and a clear atmosphere sandwiched between two scattering layers. The spectrum for the reflecting layer model exhibits serious discrepancies but shows that large amounts of CH4 (5–10 km-am) are necessary to reproduce the Uranus spectrum. Both scattering models give reasonably good fits. The homogeneous model requires a particle scattering albedo (g?wp) ? 0.998 and an abundance per scattering mean free path (a?) ofa?1 km-am. The parameters derived from the sandwich layer model are: forsb the upper scattering layer a continuum single scattering albedo (g?w0) of 0.995 and a scattering optical depth variable with wavelength consistent with Rayleigh scattering; for the clear layer they are a CH4 abundance (a) of 2.2 km-am and an effective pressure (p) ? 0.1 atm; for the lower cloud deck a Lambert reflectivity (L) of 0.9 resulted. A severe depletion of CH4 in the upper scattering layer is required. An enrichment of CH4/H2 over the solar ratio by a factor of 4–14 in the lower atmosphere is, however, indicated.  相似文献

The visible airglow experiment on the Atmosphere Explorer-C satellite has gathered sufficient data over the Earth's polar regions to allow one to map the geographic distribution of particle precipitation using emissions at 3371 and 5200 Å. Both of these features exhibit large variations in space and time. The 3371 Å emission of N2(C3π), excited by low energy electrons, indicates substantial energy inputs on the dayside in the vicinity of the polar cusp. More precipitation occurs in the morning than evening for the sample reported here, while the entire night sector between magnetic latitudes 65° and 77.5° is subjected to particle fluxes. Regions of enhanced 5200 Å emission from N(2D) are larger in horizontal extent than those at 3371 Å. This smearing effect is due to ionospheric motions induced by magnetospheric convection.  相似文献

The irradiance of Titan has been measured from 0.50 to 1.08μ in 30 Å band-passes spaced 0.01–0.02μ apart. Geometric albedos have been computed at the wavelenghts of measurement using a standard solar flux distribution after Labs and Neckel. The maximum value of pλ(0) is 0.37 at 0.68, 0.75, and 0.834μ, the minimum value, in the centers of the strongest methane absorption bands, is 0.10 at 0.887 and 1.012μ.The brightness of Titan at the time of the present measurements has been compared with that of previous modern photoelectric measurements. Within the apparent consistency of the different photoelectric systems, the brightness of Titan appears to undergo changes with time.A provisional curve of the geometric albedo from 0.30 to 4.0μ has been made by combining the present results with those of other authors, i.e., relative measurements of Titan from 0.30 to 0.50μ, and measurements of Jupiter and Saturn from 1.08 to 4.00μ. The latter are used to estimate the strengths of the methane absorption bands of Titan in that spectral range. The bolometric geometric albedo, p1(0), is computed to be 0.21. A variety of current measurements of Titan indicate a substantial atmosphere, suggesting a value of the phase integral q = 1.30 ± 0.20. The bolometric Bond albedo, A1, is then 0.27 ± 0.04, giving an effective radiative temperature Te= 84 ± 2°K.The absorption band contours of Titan have been compared with those of Jupiter and Saturn at the same resolution. The bands of the planets are known to be due primarily to methane, and they show a very regular relationship, with those of Saturn being consistently deeper and wider. For Titan, the strengths of the bands are equal or less than those of Jupiter in the band centers, while the wings are stronger than those of Saturn.Previous photoelectric and photographic spectra have been examined for evidence of temporal variation of the methane path length in the atmosphere of Titan. Differences in measurement techniques prohibit detection of small differences. The only potential differences beyond experimental uncertainties are those of Kuiper (1944) and Harris (mid-fifties). Taking Kuiper's results at face value, Titan appears to have a shorter methane path length in 1972. Harris's results can be reconciled only by the doubtful hypothesis of an almost complete absence of methane at that time.  相似文献
