The classical picture of the transition region is that of a thin spherically symmetric shell maintained in a steady average thermodynamical state by a balance between conductive heating from the hot overlying corona and radiative losses. The further analysis of existing extreme ultraviolet flux data casts doubt on the correctness of this simple model. It is shown that the downward heat flux between the chromosphere and corona cannot be nearly as large as the value 6 × 105 erg cm)= 13.46 - 2.99 sin2 s–1 derived in previous studies by assuming a planar atmosphere, and in fact is insufficient to balance transition-region radiative losses. An alternative picture is developed, consisting of a transition region network covering only a small fraction of the solar disk. The dissipation of mechanical energy, previously neglected in many calculations of theoretical transition region models, appears to play a dominant role in the local energy balance of the network. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Thermal transfer in closed magnetic tubes in the corona and transition region is described on the basis of a static model in which all heat generated is radiated away, though conduction transfers much of the heat to the transition region prior to emission. The rate of conductive transfer depends on the cross-section of the magnetic tube as it passes through the chromosphere and transition region. This is derived from the pressure in the normal chromosphere. There is then only one main parameter to establish conditions in the corona and transition region, viz. the heating per unit area of the Sun's surface, which must equal the observed radiation from corona and transition region. The density adjusts itself so as to radiate away all heat generated within the tube; conditions in the tube below the transition region have little influence other than to decide where the base of the transition region lies and the width of the region particularly in its lower parts. For the observed rate of heating, the computed densities (or pressures), the ratio of coronal to transition region emissions, and the distribution of radiation in the EUV spectrum agree closely with those observed. The optimum maximum temperatures are found with heating concentrated in the highest regions of the flux tubes. It is only in the lowest 20–40 km of the transition region, where T<105K, that any additional heating is needed to explain EUV line intensities. The equation of heat transfer also has solutions in which the temperature is oscillatory with disance. These do not apply to the normal corona, but may be relevant to prominences.  相似文献

Radiospectroheliograms obtained at millimeter wavelengths were used to determine the rotation of the solar atmosphere. Regions observed in both emission as well as absorption (associated with H dark filaments) were followed across the disk. The average sidereal rotation rate deduced from emissive regions is given by (deg day-1)=14.152(±0.270)-4.194(±3.017)sin2 B, where B is the heliographic latitude and the quoted errors are the standard deviations of a least squares fit to the data. The rate deduced from absorption regions is given by =14.729(±0.286)-1.050(±1.611)sin2 B. This rate is larger than that of emissive regions at all latitudes and shows smaller differential rotation. This apparent difference in the rotation rates is probably due to the difference in the height of formation of the emissive and absorption regions. This difference could be used to estimate the difference in height between an emissive region and an absorption feature in millimeter radiation.  相似文献

Solar p modes are one of the dominant types of coherent signals in Doppler velocity in the solar photosphere, with periods showing a power peak at five minutes. The propagation (or leakage) of these p-mode signals into the higher solar atmosphere is one of the key drivers of oscillatory motions in the higher solar chromosphere and corona. This paper examines numerically the direct propagation of acoustic waves driven harmonically at the photosphere, into the nonmagnetic solar atmosphere. Erdélyi et al. (Astron. Astrophys. 467, 1299, 2007) investigated the acoustic response to a single point-source driver. In the follow-up work here we generalise this previous study to more structured, coherent, photospheric drivers mimicking solar global oscillations. When our atmosphere is driven with a pair of point drivers separated in space, reflection at the transition region causes cavity oscillations in the lower chromosphere, and amplification and cavity resonance of waves at the transition region generate strong surface oscillations. When driven with a widely horizontally coherent velocity signal, cavity modes are caused in the chromosphere, surface waves occur at the transition region, and fine structures are generated extending from a dynamic transition region into the lower corona, even in the absence of a magnetic field.  相似文献

Extreme ultraviolet spectroheliograms in Mg x (625 Å) and the Lyman continuum (897 Å) obtained from OSO-6 are used to determine the differential rotation rate in the solar chromosphere and corona. The equatorial rotation rate agrees with spectroscopic measurements of the photospheric plasma velocity; the variation of rate with latitude is less pronounced than in most other determinations. We cannot discern a variation in the rotation rate between the chromosphere and corona.  相似文献

The EUV line emission and relative line-of-sight velocity in the transition region between the chromosphere and corona of 36 sunspot regions are investigated, based on observations with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer – CDS and the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation – SUMER on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory – SOHO. The most prominent features in the transition-region intensity maps are the sunspot plumes. In the temperature range between log T=5.2 and log T=5.6 we find that 29 of the 36 sunspots contain one or two sunspot plumes. The relative line-of-sight velocity in sunspot plumes is high and directed into the Sun in the transition region, for 19 of the sunspots the maximum velocity exceeds 25 km s?1. The velocity increases with increasing temperature, reaches a maximum close to log T=5.5 and then decreases abruptly.

Attention is given to the properties of oscillations with a period of 3 min in the sunspot transition region, based on observations of six sunspots. Comparing loci with the same phase we find that the 3-min oscillations affect the entire umbral transition region and part of the penumbral transition region. Above the umbra the observed relation between the oscillations in peak line intensity and line-of-sight velocity is compatible with the hypothesis that the oscillations are caused by upward-propagating acoustic waves. Information about intensity oscillations in the low corona is obtained from observations of one sunspot in the 171 Å channel with the Transition Region And Coronal Explorer – TRACE. We conclude that we observe the 3-min sunspot oscillations in the chromosphere, the transition region and the low corona. The oscillations are observable over a wider temperature range than the sunspot plumes, and show a different spatial distribution than that of the plumes.

Models of the magnetic field in the solar chromosphere and corona are still mainly based on theoretical extrapolations of photospheric measurements. For the practical calculation of the global field, the so-called source-surface model has been introduced, in which the influence of the solar wind is described by the requirement that the field be radial at some exterior (source) surface. Then the assumption that the field is current-free in the volume between the photosphere and this surface allows for its determination from the photospheric measurement. In the present paper a generalization of the source-surface model to force-free fields is proposed. In the generalized model the parameter( = ×B·B/B 2)must be non-constant (or vanish identically) and currents are restricted to regions with closed field lines. A mathematical algorithm for computing the field from boundary data is devised.  相似文献

The instrument SUMER - Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation is designed to investigate structures and associated dynamical processes occurring in the solar atmosphere, from the chromosphere through the transition region to the inner corona, over a temperature range from 104 to 2 × 106 K and above. These observations will permit detailed spectroscopic diagnostics of plasma densities and temperatures in many solar features, and will support penetrating studies of underlying physical processes, including plasma flows, turbulence and wave motions, diffusion transport processes, events associated with solar magnetic activity, atmospheric heating, and solar wind acceleration in the inner corona. Specifically, SUMER will measure profiles and intensities of EUV lines; determine Doppler shifts and line broadenings with high accuracy; provide stigmatic images of the Sun in the EUV with high spatial, spectral, and temporal resolution; and obtain monochromatic maps of the full Sun and the inner corona or selected areas thereof. SUMER will be flown on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), scheduled for launch in November, 1995. This paper has been written to familiarize solar physicists with SUMER and to demonstrate some command procedures for achieving certain scientific observations.  相似文献

The rotation rates obtained by tracing 124 polar crown filaments are presented in comparison with previous results. Higher filament rotation rate in polar regions was detected and discussed in terms of the various phenomena such as: the projection effect due to the height of measured tracers, the connection of polar filaments with the magnetic field patterns which show an increase of the rotation rate at high latitudes, rigid rotation of polar filaments which form pivot points, and eventual change of the differential rotation law during the cycle. However, when the height correction for an average height of 1% of the solar radius is applied, the filament rotation rate in polar regions decreases. Then the rotation law becomes: () = 14.45 – 0.11 sin2 – 3.69 sin4 (° day–1, sidereal).  相似文献

Magnetic reconnection at the photospheric boundary is an essential part of some theories for prominence formation. We consider a simple model for reconnection in this region. Parameters of the reconnecting current sheet are expressed in terms of the concentration and temperature of the outside dense and cold plasma, magnetic field intensity, and velocity of convective flows at the photosphere. The reconnection process is shown to be most efficient in a layer several hundred kilometers thick coinciding with the temperature minimum region of the solar atmosphere. The calculated upward flux of matter through the current sheet ( 1011–1012 g s–1) is amply sufficient for prominence formation in the upper chromosphere or lower corona.  相似文献

We have studied the dynamics in the sunspot transition region between the chromosphere and the corona and investigated the extension of the flow field into the corona. Based on EUV spectra of a medium size sunspot and its surroundings, NOAA 7981, observed with CDS and SUMER on SOHO, we derive line-of-sight velocities and study the line profiles for a series of emission lines. The flow field in the low corona is found to differ markedly from that in the transition region. In the transition region the relative line-of-sight velocity shows an upflow in the umbra and relatively large areas with downflow that cover part of the penumbra. The spatial extent of these areas with upflow and downflow increases with increasing temperature in the transition region, but the whole flow field changes character as the temperature increases from the upper transition region to the low corona. Based on a calibration of the SUMER wavelength scale we find that the entire sunspot transition zone appears to be moving downwards towards the chromosphere. The relation between this finding and the general tendency for transition-region lines to show a net red shift is discussed.Several of the transition-region spectral line profiles are observed to show two line components with Gaussian shape and line-of-sight velocities that differ markedly. Several of the line profiles that are composed of two spectral line components occur close to the dividing line between up- and downflow. A discussion of this observation is presented. In small regions with spatial extent of a few arc sec we detect enhanced continuum emission underlying explosive events. The similarities between explosive events with continuum emission and the moustaches observed in H close to sunspots are so striking that we are tempted to introduce the notation transition-region moustaches.  相似文献

High resolution pictures (about 0.3) of photospheric faculae near the solar limb have been obtained with the Pic du Midi 50 cm refractor; their granular structure then clearly appears. The microphotometric study of these facular granules shows that the ratio of their intensity to the photospheric intensity, I f/I ph (cos) reaches a maximum near cos = 0.3 and then decreases towards the limb. The values of this ratio have been corrected with a most likely spread function. Then a temperature model of a facular granule is obtained: with respect to the neighbouring photosphere, this granule appears as a photospheric hot cloud which does not extend high in the solar atmosphere (thickness 100 km above 5000 = 1). The temperature excess is 750K at maximum. This hot region is located over a layer which is cooler than the normal photosphere at the same level. Another hot region might extend above the photospheric hot cloud, possibly up to the chromosphere. This photospheric facula model which is confined to the lower photosphere seems to indicate that this phenomenon is different from the photospheric network which is visible up to the lower chromosphere.  相似文献

Some parameters of chromospheric structure are drawn from recently published XUV spectroheliograms. The HeII emission above the limb arises from the small amount of He+ still existing at 106°. The larger amounts of He+ in the cooler corona at the poles explain the polar cap absorption in 304. The flat distribution of emission in Oiv and Ov, with a sharp spike at the limb, is caused by the rough structure of the chromosphere and the variable excitation in the emitting spicules. The intensity of the Nevii lines shows that the transition zone between chromosphere and corona is very sharp. This research was supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under Grant NASA NGR 05 002 034.  相似文献

EUV spectra of a medium-size sunspot and its surroundings, NOAA 7981, were obtained on 2 August 1996 with the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) and the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The spectral lines formed in the transition region and corona show considerable structure and large deviations from a uniform spatial distribution over the active region. Enhanced EUV emissions in transition region lines are concentrated in small regions outside the umbra of the sunspot throughout most of the observing sequence. Only during a short, active period do we find an enhanced line emission that reaches into the umbra. Preliminary values for the umbral intensity are given.Marked changes are detected between the spatial distribution of line emission in the transition region and the low corona. The difference is not limited to cool and hot non-flaring loops not being cospatial, but includes differences both regarding the time variability and the orientation and size of the emission features. Whereas both rapid ( 4 and 2 min) and slow ( 10 and 12 h) temporal variations are found in the chromosphere (Hei 584 Ú) and transition region (Ov 629 Ú), the response in the low corona (Mgix 368 Ú) is slow ( 5 h). Furthermore, marked differences between the spatial distributions in the Mgviii 315 Ú, Mgix 368 Ú lines formed in the low corona and the coronal Fexiv 334 Ú, Fexvi 360 Ú lines are detected.  相似文献

Existing models of the quiet chromosphere-corona transition region predict a distribution of emission measure over temperature that agrees with observation for T 105 K. These network models assume that all magnetic field lines that emerge from the photosphere extend into and are in thermal contact with the corona. We show that the observed fine-scale structure of the photospheric magnetic network instead suggests a two-component picture in which magnetic funnels that open into the corona emerge from only a fraction of the network. The gas that makes up the hotter transition region is mostly contained within these funnels, as in standard models, but, because the funnels are more constricted in our picture, the heat flowing into the cooler transition region from the corona is reduced by up to an order of magnitude. The remainder of the network is occupied by a population of low-lying loops with lengths 104 km. We propose that the cooler transition region is mainly located within such loops, which are magnetically insulated from the corona and must, therefore, be heated internally. The fine-scale structure of ultraviolet spectroheliograms is consistent with this proposal, and theoretical models of internally heated loops can explain the behavior of the emission measure below T 105 K.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

We propose a mechanism for the formation of a magnetic energy avalanche based on highly dynamic phenomena within the ubiquitous small-scale network magnetic elements in the quiet photosphere. We suggest that this mechanism may provide constant mass and energy supply for the corona and fast wind. Constantly emerging from sub-surface layers, flux tubes collide and reconnect generating magneto-hydrodynamic shocks that experience strong gradient acceleration in the sharply stratified photosphere/chromosphere region. Acoustic and fast magnetosonic branches of these waves lead to heating and/or jet formation due to cumulative effects (Tarbell et al., 1999). The Alfvén waves generated by post-reconnection processes have quite a restricted range of parameters for shock formation, but their frequency, determined by the reconnection rate, may be high enough (0.1–2.5 s–1) to carry the energy into the corona. We also suggest that the primary energy source for the fast wind lies far below the coronal heights, and that the chromosphere and transition region flows and also radiative transient form the base of the fast wind. The continuous supply of emerging magnetic flux tubes provides a permanent energy production process capable of explaining the steady character of the fast wind and its energetics.  相似文献

The temperature structure of the transition region between the chromosphere and corona is discussed in the context of current ideas about magnetic fields in these layers. Magnetic channeling of the downward conductive heat flow from the corona into the regions of enhanced field at the supergranulation boundaries is proposed as a mechanism for explaining the measured intensities of solar ultraviolet emission lines which originate in layers with temperatures below 105 °K. It is shown that nearly all of the observed ultraviolet line emission originates in interspicule regions, and that this emission plays an important part in the energy balance of the cooler layers of the transition region. It is suggested that certain motions observed in the upper chromosphere may represent the earliest visual evidence for conversion of inflowing conduction energy into kinetic motions. On leave from the Observatory Sonnenborgh at Utrecht, The Netherlands.  相似文献

Detailed comparisons of Culgoora 160 MHz radioheliograms of solar noise storms and Skylab EUV spectroheliograms of coronal loop structures are presented. It is concluded that: (1) there is a close association between changes in large-scale magnetic fields in the corona and the onset or cessation of noise storms; (2) these coronal changes result from the emergence of new magnetic flux at the photospheric level; (3) although new magnetic flux at the photospheric level is often accompanied by an increase in flare activity the latter is not directly responsible for noise storm activity; rather the new magnetic flux diffuses slowly outwards through the corona at rates 1–2 km s–1 and produces noise storms at 160 MHz 1–2 days later; (4) the coronal density above or in large-scale EUV loop systems is sufficiently dense to account for noise storm emission at the fundamental plasma frequency; (5) the scatter in noise storm positions can be accounted for by the appearance and disappearance of individual loops in a system.  相似文献

The present paper concerns Alfvén waves, in a resistive and viscous atmosphere, under a steep temperature gradient (Section 1). The dissipative Alfvén wave equation is deduced assuming uniform vertical background magnetic field, and allowing for arbitrary profiles of Alfvén speed, and viscous and resistive diffusivities as functions of altitude (Section 2). A three-parameter family of temperature profiles, allowing for independent choice of initial and asymptotic temperature, and of initial temperature gradient, is used to re-write the wave equation, with the temperature as the independent variable, instead of altitude (Section 3). It is shown that, for the conditions prevailing in the solar transition region between the chromosphere and corona, two approximations of the dissipative wave equations may be considered, the simplest leading to solution in terms of Gaussian hypergeometric functions (Section 4). The exact analytical solution allows calculation of the (i) velocity and (ii) magnetic field perturbations, (iii) kinetic, (iv) magnetic and (v) total energy density, (vi) energy flux, (vii) rate-of-strain and (viii) electric current, and (ix) viscous, (x) resistive and (xi) total rate of dissipation (Section 5). These are plotted versus temperature, across the transition region from the chromosphere to the corona, for the quiet and active Sun (Section 6). The feasibility of heating of the transition region by dissipation of Alfvén waves is discussed (Section 7), by comparing empirical heating rates, with theoretical values for a range of physical conditions, including initial velocity perturbations 5 to 15 km s –1, background magnetic field 12 to 120 G, wave periods 60 to 300 s, thickness of the transition region 100 to 300 km, resistive and anomalous diffusivities to 100 and viscous and turbulent diffusivities to 100 . The conclusion is that dissipation of Alfvén waves is not an effective heating mechanism for the transition region and corona, although it may be for the chromosphere (see Campos and Mendes, 1995, and references therein).  相似文献

Characteristics of the emission observed above the solar limb in four EUV lines, Sixii 499, Mgx 625, Neviii 770, and Ovi 1032 are discussed. The mean temperature of the corona derived from the ratios of the intensities of Sixii 499 and Mgx 625 is 1.8 million K. There do not appear to be significant temperature differences in regions with low EUV intensities and those with high EUV intensities, suggesting that the EUV emission from the lithium-like ions depends primarily on the integral of n e 2 along the line of sight. The EUV data are compared with K-coronameter measurements in order to yield new estimates of the abundances of Si, Mg, Ne and O relative to hydrogen. Within the uncertainties of the analysis, these coronal abundances are in agreement with the corresponding photospheric values.  相似文献
