Dependencies of galactic planetary nebula chemical abundances and their central star masses on the distance from the galactic plane are discussed.Z-dependencies of He/H, N/H, N/O and Ar/H and dependencies of He/H, N/H, N/O, Ne/H and Ar/H on central star mass are found. Three galactic planetary nebula distance scale samples are used and it is shown that the distance scale system (where distances of each planetary nebula mass class are determined with the separate scale) is the most reliable. The correlations obtained for the Magellanic Cloud planetary nebulae are used for comparison.  相似文献

We present the 6-m SAO telescope spectroscopy of HS 2134+0400, a blue compact galaxy (BCG) discovered within the framework of a dedicated Hamburg/SAO survey for low-metallicity BCGs (HSS-LM). Its very low abundance of oxygen (12 + log(O/H) = 7.44) and other heavy elements (S, N, Ne, Ar) allows this dwarf galaxy to be assigned to the group of eight lowest-metallicity BCGs among the several thousand BCGs known in the nearby Universe. The measured heavy-element abundance ratios (S/O, Ne/O, N/O, and Ar/O) are in good agreement with the typical values found for other very metal-poor BCGs. The spatial location of HS 2134+0400 is atypical of the majority of BCGs: it lies in the Pegasus void, a large region with a very low density of galaxies with normal or higher luminosities. In addition to HS 2134+0400, we found a dozen more very metal-poor galaxies in voids. Therefore, we discuss the hypothesis that this type of objects may be representative for the population of dwarf galaxies in voids.  相似文献

Heavy element abundances derived from high-quality ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) spectroscopic observations of low-metallicity blue compact galaxies (BCGs) with oxygen abundances 12+log O/H between 7.1 and 8.3 are discussed. None of the heavy element-to-oxygen abundance ratios studied here (C/O, N/O, Ne/O, Si/O, S/O, Ar/O, Fe/O) depend on oxygen abundance for BCGs with 12+log O/H≤7.6 (ZZ/20). This constancy implies that all these heavy elements have a primary origin and are produced by the same massive (M≥10 M) stars responsible for O production. The dispersion of the C/O and N/O ratios in these galaxies is found to be remarkably small, being only ±0.03 dex and ±0.02 dex respectively. This very small dispersion is strong evidence against any time-delayed production of C and primary N in the lowest-metallicity BCGs, and hence against production of these elements by intermediate-mass (3 MM≤9 M) stars at very low metallicities, as commonly thought. In higher metallicity BCGs (7.6<12+log O/H<8.2), the Ne/O, Si/O, S/O, Ar/O and Fe/O abundance ratios retain the same constant value they had at lower metallicities. By contrast, there is an increase of the C/O and N/O ratios along with their dispersions at a given O. We interpret this increase as due to the additional contribution of C and primary N production in intermediate-mass stars, on top of that by high-mass stars. BCGs show the same O/Fe overabundance with respect to the Sun (∼0.4 dex) as galactic halo stars, suggesting the same chemical enrichment history.  相似文献

Spectroscopic observations of four planetary nebulae (PNe) with emission-line central stars of different spectral types are presented: Cn 1-5, Pe 1-1, NGC 5873, and M1-19. The interstellar extinction, physical conditions (n e , T e ), and abundances of several elements (He, N, O, Ne, S, Ar, Cl) have been determined for all nebulae. The nebula Cn 1–5 with fairly high abundances of helium and nitrogen is shown to belong to type I PNe. Possible variability of the intensities of low-excitation emission lines in NGC 5873 has been found; it can be related to variations of the stellar wind from the central star. The measured α-element abundance ratios (S/O, Ne/O, Ar/O, Cl/O) are in good agreement with those typical of HII regions.  相似文献

Flux-calibrated low-resolution spectra covering the optical wavelength range from 3400 to 7500 Å have been obtained over the central region and the surroundings of the extraordinary planetary nebula (PN) KjPn 8 (PNG 112.5-00.1). The spectrum from the core is of low excitation with T e(N  II ) = 8000 K and n e(S  II ) = 550 cm−3. KjPn 8 is found to be a Type I PN according to the original classification scheme of Peimbert & Torres-Peimbert, with enriched He/H and N/O ratios with respect to mean values for PN. Increased O/H, Ne/H and Ar/H ratios over those of average PN reflect the possible metal-rich environment from which the progenitor star formed, and also are similar to those found in the extreme Type I PN He 2-111. The N/H ratio is found to be only moderately high compared to the average PN and consequently, the large O abundance pulls the N/O ratio towards the lower limit of the criterion for Type I planetary nebulae (PNe) in this case. In addition, the spectra of some knots and faint regions in the KjPn 8 surroundings are presented, which show only a few spectral lines. Low electron densities ranging from 100 to 300 cm−3 have been derived in these outer regions.  相似文献

Radial abundance gradients of the element ratios O/H, Ne/H, S/H, and Ar/H are determined for a sample of disk planetary nebulae, emphasizing the behaviour of the gradients at large galactocentric distances. Spectra from SDSS DR5 are used for a spectral study of seven HII regions in Kazarian galaxies. The abundances of helium and heavy elements, and also the quantity of ionizing stars and the star formation rate in these galaxies, are determined. The oxygen abundance, 12+log(O/H) lies between 7.94 and 8.35. The mean abundance ratios log(S/O), log(Ar/O), and log(Ne/O) are equal to −1.63, −2.37, and −0.78, respectively. For these HII regions, log(N/O) lies between −0.63 and −1.37. On an N/O-O/H diagram they occupy the same area as high excitation HII regions. In all likelihood the ages of the HII regions studied here exceed the 100–300 million years, required for the enrichment in nitrogen by intermediate-mass stars.. The star formation rate is one order as in the HII regions of spiral and irregular galaxies and ranges from 0.05 ÷ 0.81 M. year−1. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 51, No. 1, pp. 75–87 (February 2008).  相似文献

We study the relation between nitrogen and oxygen abundances as a function of metallicity for a sample of emission-line objects for which a direct measurement of the metallicity has been possible. This sample is representative of the very different conditions in ionization and chemical enrichment that we can find in the Universe. We first construct the N/O versus O/H ratio diagram, and discuss its large dispersion at all metallicity regimes. Using the same sample and a large grid of photoionization models covering very different values of the N/O ratio, we then study the most widely used strong-line calibrators of metallicity based on [N  ii ] emission lines, such as N2 and O3N2. We demonstrate that these parameters underestimate the metallicity at low N/O ratios and vice versa. We also investigate the effect of the N/O ratio on different diagnostic diagrams used to discriminate narrow-line active galactic nuclei from star-forming regions, such as the [O  iii ]/Hβ versus [N  ii ]/Hα, and show that a large fraction of the galaxies catalogued as composite in this diagram can be, in fact, star-forming galaxies with a high value of the N/O ratio. Finally, using strong-line methods sensitive to the N/O abundance ratio, like N2O2 and N2S2, we investigate the relation between this ratio and the stellar mass for the galaxies of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find, as in the case of the mass–metallicity relation, a correlation between these two quantities and a flattening of the relation for the most massive galaxies, which could be a consequence of the enhancement of the dispersion of N/O ratio in the high-metallicity regime.  相似文献

The Monte-Carlo method has been used to simulate Auger cascades in atoms and ions of Mg, Al, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe with account for the radiative and Auger transitions. The probabilities of ejection of various numbers of electrons after the initial creation of vacancy in different shells have been calculated. Corresponding probabilities for atoms and ions of C, N, O, Ne (where single Auger transitions are possible) are presented. The data on radiative and Auger transition rates available in the literature for all the above-mentioned atoms and ions are collected and discussed.  相似文献

Abstract— Thick spherical targets, one made of gabbro (R = 25 cm) and one made of iron (R = 10 cm), were irradiated isotropically with 1.6 GeV protons at Laboratoire National Saturne (LNS)/Saclay to simulate the interactions of galactic cosmic ray protons with meteoroids in space. At various depths, both artificial meteoroids contained a large number of high‐purity, single‐element target foils and chemical compounds of up to 28 target elements. In these individual target foils, the elemental production rates of radionuclides and noble gas isotopes were measured. Here, we report the results for the light noble gas isotopes 3,4He, 20,21,22Ne, and 36,38,39Ar for the most cosmochemically relevant target elements as well as for some meteoritic material from Jilin, Farmington, and Cape York. From 3He analyses done several years apart, 3H diffusive losses during sample storage have been obtained, and direct as well as cumulative 3He production rates for O, Mg, Al, Si, Fe, Ni, and the meteoritic material are given. Losses by diffusion of tritium from metallic Mg and Fe are found to occur on time scales of months, while metallic Al, Si, and stone meteorites are much more retentive. The production rate ratios P(3H)/P(3He)d obtained in the simulation experiments are 0.73, 1.28, and 1.16 for O, Al, and Si, respectively. These rates are based on our best knowledge about the 3H and 3He production rates and should, therefore, replace data published earlier (Leya et al. 2000a). The earlier calculations for 4He, 20,21,22Ne, and 36,38,39Ar remain valid. The new modeled correlation 3Hecum/21Ne versus 22Ne/21Ne for chondrites exposed to cosmic rays with an energy spectrum characterized by a modulation parameter of φ = 650 MeV is in fair agreement with the empirical relationship (“Berne plot”). However, for small meteorites and little shielding in larger ones, there are systematic differences that most likely are due to an underestimation of the spallogenic 22Ne/21Ne ratio by ?2%.  相似文献

We study the evolution of elemental abundances in an ensemble of Galactic planetary nebulae as a function of the masses of the central stars (M cs) and their progenitors (M ini). We derive the dependences of the C, N, Ne, Cl, Ar, and S abundances on M cs and M ini for a large sample of nebulae. We calculate the theoretical elemental abundances in nebulae under the assumption of complete mixing of the progenitor’s matter ejected at different stages of its evolution. The theoretical dependences of the C and N abundances on M ini have been found to correspond to the observed ones. At the same time, the observed mean O abundance is approximately half its theoretical value. The Ne, Cl, Ar, and S abundances monotonically increase with increasing mass of the progenitor star, which reflects an increase in the mean abundances of heavy elements during the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. We have derived the relation between the abundances of the elements under consideration in planetary nebulae and the masses of their central stars. This relation is used to construct the mass function for the nuclei of planetary nebulae.  相似文献

We measured the concentrations and isotopic compositions of He, Ne, and Ar in bulk samples and metal separates of 14 ordinary chondrite falls with long exposure ages and high metamorphic grades. In addition, we measured concentrations of the cosmogenic radionuclides 10Be, 26Al, and 36Cl in metal separates and in the nonmagnetic fractions of the selected meteorites. Using cosmogenic 36Cl and 36Ar measured in the metal separates, we determined 36Cl‐36Ar cosmic‐ray exposure (CRE) ages, which are shielding‐independent and therefore particularly reliable. Using the cosmogenic noble gases and radionuclides, we are able to decipher the CRE history for the studied objects. Based on the correlation 3He/21Ne versus 22Ne/21Ne, we demonstrate that, among the meteorites studied, only one suffered significant diffusive losses (about 35%). The data confirm that the linear correlation 3He/21Ne versus 22Ne/21Ne breaks down at high shielding. Using 36Cl‐36Ar exposure ages and measured noble gas concentrations, we determine 21Ne and 38Ar production rates as a function of 22Ne/21Ne. The new data agree with recent model calculations for the relationship between 21Ne and 38Ar production rates and the 22Ne/21Ne ratio, which does not always provide unique shielding information. Based on the model calculations, we determine a new correlation line for 21Ne and 38Ar production rates as a function of the shielding indicator 22Ne/21Ne for H, L, and LL chondrites with preatmospheric radii less than about 65 cm. We also calculated the 10Be/21Ne and 26Al/21Ne production rate ratios for the investigated samples, which show good agreement with recent model calculations.  相似文献

In this work, we present a study of the strong optical collisional emission lines of Ne and Ar in an heterogeneous sample of ionized gaseous nebulae for which it is possible to derive directly the electron temperature and hence the chemical abundances of Ne and Ar. We calculate using a grid of photoionization models new ionization correction factors for these two elements and we study the behaviour of Ne/O and Ar/O abundance ratios with metallicity. We find a constant value for Ne/O, while there seems to be some evidence for the existence of negative radial gradients of Ar/O over the discs of some nearby spirals. We study the relation between the intensities of the emission lines of [Ne  iii ] at 3869 Å and [O  iii ] at 4959 and 5007 Å. This relation can be used in empirical calibrations and diagnostic ratios extending their applicability to bluer wavelengths and therefore to samples of objects at higher redshifts. Finally, we propose a new diagnostic using [O  ii ], [Ne  iii ] and Hδ emission lines to derive metallicities for galaxies at high z .  相似文献

We report on extensive spectroscopic observations of the WR-ring nebulae NGC 2359 and RCW 78, respectively, excited by the WN5 stars HD 56925 and WN8 HD 117688. For the first object we have determined abundances for O/H, Ne/H, N/H, and He/H in many different positions, including the ionized gas in the bubble, inside the optical shell structure, and the outermost zones associated with the S 298 Hii region. We do not find any significant difference in the N/H and O/H abundances over the entire nebula. The O/H and N/H abundances expected are close to those for a normal Hii region located at similar distance. In the case of He/H we find indication of local enhancements which sum to the abundance of metal rich galactic Hii regions like M17. RCW 78 appears to show slight overabundances of He/H and N/H in the two observed positions. The ionising temperature for the WN central star (HD 56925) of NGC 2359 is determined from the observed Hii region spectrum giving a value of 50000 K, appropriate to its spectral type.  相似文献

Abstract— We measured abundances and isotopic compositions of noble gases in metal and schreibersite of the Acuña (IIIAB) iron meteorite. The concentrations of noble gases in Acuña metal are very low compared to those reported so far for other iron meteorites. The isotopic ratios of He, Ne and Ar indicate that they are mostly of cosmogenic origin. Cosmogenic components are even present in Kr and Xe, which could not have been produced from Fe, Ni and P and are probably due to the spallation of trace elements of higher masses. The high 4He/21Ne ratio of 420 in Acuña metal indicates that the samples were at a deep position within a very large meteoroid. The exposure ages of Acuña were estimated to be 50–200 Ma from 3He, 21Ne and 38Ar abundances and by utilizing the diagrams of production rates vs. the 4He/21Ne ratio based on the Signer-Nier model. The low exposure age of Acuña may indicate a history different from that of other IIIAB irons whose exposure ages cluster at ~670 Ma. Otherwise, Acuña may be one of the samples with the low production rate, which can not be estimated from the diagrams of the Signer-Nier model.  相似文献

Abstract— We present the concentrations and isotopic compositions of He, Ne, and Ar for nonmagnetic fractions and bulk samples of 17 H chondrites which were recently investigated for their 36Cl‐36Ar cosmic‐ray exposure ages (Graf et al., 2001). All selected meteorites are observed falls with cosmic‐ray exposure ages close to the 7 Ma peak. The rare gas data are consistent with 10Be and 36C1 production rates in the metal phase. Remarkably, only 1 out of the 17 H chondrites, Bath, shows clear indications for a complex exposure history. Based on rare gas concentrations and 36Cl‐36Ar exposure ages, 21Ne production rates as a function of 22Ne/21 Ne and a mean 38Ar production rate are determined. The results confirm model calculations which predict that the relationship between 21Ne production rates and 22Ne/21Ne is ambiguous for high shielding. Besides the mean 38Ar production rate we also give production rate ratios P(38Ar from Ca)/P(38Ar from Fe). They vary between 10 and 77, showing no significant correlation with 38Ar concentrations or 22Ne/21Ne. By investigating the metal separates, Graf et al. (2001) found significant 3He deficits for 6 out of the 17 meteorites. For the nonmagnetic fractions and bulk samples investigated here, the data points in a 3He/21Ne vs. 22Ne/21Ne diagram plot in the area defined by most of the H chondrites. This means that 3He deficits in the metal phase are much more pronounced than in silicate minerals and we will argue that 3H diffusive losses in meteorites should be the rule rather than the exception. The 21Ne exposure ages, calculated on the basis of modeled 21Ne production rates, confirm the assumption by Graf et al. (2001) that the H5 chondrites with low 3He/38Ar in the metal formed in a separate event than those with normal 3He/38Ar ratios. The data can best be interpreted by assuming that the prominent 7 Ma exposure age peak of the H chondrites is due to at least two events about 7.0 and 7.6 Ma ago.  相似文献

Kronos is a mission aimed to measure in situ the chemical and isotopic compositions of the Saturnian atmosphere with two probes and also by remote sensing, in order to understand the origin, formation, and evolution of giant planets in general, including extrasolar planets. The abundances of noble gases, hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur and their compounds, as well as of the D/H, 4He/3He, 22Ne/21Ne/20Ne, 36Ar/38Ar, 13C/12C, 15N/14N, 18O/(17O)/16O, 136Xe/134Xe/132Xe/130Xe/129Xe isotopic ratios will be measured by mass spectrometry on two probes entering the atmosphere of Saturn at two different locations near mid-latitudes, down to a pressure of 10 Bar. The global composition of Saturn will be investigated through these measurements, together with microwave radiometry determination of H2O and NH3 and their 3D variations. The dynamics of Saturn’s atmosphere will be investigated from: (1) measurements of pressure, temperature, vertical distribution of clouds and wind speed along the probes’ descent trajectories, and (2) determination of deep winds, differential rotation and convection with combined probe, gravity and radiometric measurements. Besides these primary goals, Kronos will also measure the intensities and characteristics of Saturn’s magnetic field inside the D ring as well as Saturn’s gravitational field, in order to constrain the abundance of heavy elements in Saturn’s interior and in its central core. Depending on the preferred architecture (flyby versus orbiter), Kronos will be in a position to measure the properties of Saturn’s innermost magnetosphere and to investigate the ring structure in order to understand how these tiny structures could have formed and survived up to the present times. Abstract— The HF/HCI‐resistant residues of the chondrites CM2 Cold Bokkeveld, CV3 (ox.) Grosnaja, CO3.4 Lancé, CO3.7 Isna, LL3.4 Chainpur, and H3.7 Dimmitt have been measured by closed‐system stepped etching (CSSE) in order to better characterise the noble gases in “phase Q”, a major carrier of primordial noble gases. All isotopic ratios in phase Q of the different meteorites are quite uniform, except for (20Ne/22Ne)Q. As already suggested by precise earlier measurements (Schelhaas et al., 1990; Wieler et al., 1991, 1992), (20Ne/22Ne)Q is the least uniform isotopic ratio of the Q noble gases. The data cluster ~10.1 for Cold Bokkeveld and Lancé and 10.7 for Chainpur, Grosnaja, and Dimmitt, respectively. No correlation of (20Ne/22Ne)Q with the classification or the alteration history of the meteorites has been found. The Ar, Kr, and Xe isotopic ratios for all six samples are identical within their uncertainties and similar to earlier Q determinations as well as to Ar‐Xe in ureilites. Thus, an unknown process probably accounts for the alteration of the originally incorporated Ne‐Q. The noble gas elemental compositions provide evidence that Q consists of at least two carbonaceous carrier phases “Q1” and “Q2” with slightly distinct chemical properties. Ratios (Ar/Xe)Q and (Kr/Xe)Q reflect both thermal metamorphism and aqueous alteration. These parent‐body processes have led to larger depletions of Ar and Kr relative to Xe. In contrast, meteorites that suffered severe aqueous alteration, such as the CM chondrites, do not show depletions of He and Ne relative to Ar but rather the highest (He/Ar)Q and (Ne/Ar)Q ratios. This suggests that Q1 is less susceptible to aqueous alteration than Q2. Both subphases may well have incorporated noble gases from the same reservoir, as indicated by the nearly constant, though very large, depletion of the lighter noble gases relative to solar abundances. However, the elemental ratios show that Q1 and Q2 must have acquired (or lost) noble gases in slightly different element proportions. Cold Bokkeveld suggests that Q1 may be related to presolar graphite. Phases Q1 and Q2 might be related to the subphases that have been suggested by Gros and Anders (1977). The distribution of the 20Ne/22Ne ratios cannot be attributed to the carriers Q1 and Q2. The residues of Chainpur and Cold Bokkeveld contain significant amounts of Ne‐E(L), and the data confirm the suggestion of Huss (1997) that the 22Ne‐E(L) content, and thus the presolar graphite abundances, are correlated with the metamorphic history of the meteorites.  相似文献

Abstract— The (compositionally) closely related iron meteorite groups IIIE and IIIAB were originally separated based on differences in kamacite bandwidth, the presence of carbides only in the IIIE group, and marginally resolvable differences on the Ga‐Ni and Ge‐Ni diagrams. A total of six IIIE iron meteorites have been analyzed for C and N using secondary ion mass spectrometry, and three of these have also been analyzed for N, Ne, and Ar by stepped combustion. We show that these groups cannot be resolved on the basis of N abundances or isotopic compositions but that they are marginally different in C‐isotopic composition and nitride occurrence. Cosmic‐ray exposure age distributions of the IIIE and IIIAB iron meteorites seem to be significantly different. There is a significant N‐isotopic range among the IIIE iron meteorites. A negative correlation between δ15N and N concentration suggests that the increase in s?15N resulted from diffusional loss of N.  相似文献

The problem of the chemical evolution of the system of Galactic planetary nebulae, starting with the early stage of development of the Galaxy, is investigated. The radial and vertical gradients of C, N, O, Ne, Ar, Cl, and S abundances are determined for different ages of the precursor stars of the nebulae. A statistically significant age dependence of the gradients is derived.  相似文献
