We report an analysis of one year of Suprathermal Ion Detector Experiment (SIDE) Total Ion Detector (TID) “resonance” events observed between January 1972 and January 1973. The study includes only those events during which upstream solar wind conditions were readily available. The analysis shows that these events are associated with lunar traversals through the dawn flank of the terrestrial magnetospheric bow shock. We propose that the events result from an increase in lunar surface electric potential effected by secondary electron emission due to primary electrons in the Earth's foreshock region (although primary ions may play a role as well). This work establishes (1) the lunar surface potential changes as the Moon moves through the terrestrial bow shock, (2) the lunar surface achieves potentials in the upstream foreshock region that differ from those in the downstream magnetosheath region, (3) these differences can be explained by the presence of energetic electron beams in the upstream foreshock region and (4) if this explanation is correct, the location of the Moon with respect to the terrestrial bow shock influences lunar surface potential.  相似文献

Because the solar wind (SW) flow is usually super-sonic, a fast-mode bow shock (BS) is formed in front of the Earth's magnetosphere, and the Moon crosses the BS at both dusk and dawn flanks. On the other hand, behind of the Moon along the SW flow forms a tenuous region called lunar wake, where the flow can be sub-Alfvénic (and thus sub-sonic) because of its low-density status. Here we report, with joint measurement by Chang’E-1 and SELENE, that the Earth's BS surface is drastically deformed in the lunar wake. Despite the quasi-perpendicular shock configuration encountered at dusk flank under the Parker-spiral magnetic field, no clear shock surface can be found in the lunar wake, while instead gradual transition of the magnetic field from the upstream to downstream value was observed for a several-minute interval. This finding suggests that the ‘magnetic ramp’ is highly broadened in the wake where a fast-mode shock is no longer maintained due to the highly reduced density. On the other hand, observations at the 100 km altitude on the dayside show that the fast-mode shock is maintained even when the width of the downstream region is smaller than a typical scale length of a perpendicular shock. Our results suggest that the Moon is not so large to eliminate the BS at 100 km altitude on the dayside, while the magnetic field associated with the shock structure is drastically affected in the lunar wake.  相似文献

Seismic refraction data, obtained at the Apollo 14 and 16 sites, when combined with other lunar seismic data, allow a compressional wave velocity profile of the lunar near-surface and crust to be derived. The regolith, although variable in thickness over the lunar surface, possesses surprisingly similar seismic properties. Underlying the regolith at both the Apollo 14 Fra Mauro site and the Apollo 16 Descartes site is low-velocity brecciated material or impact derived debris. Key features of the lunar seismic velocity profile are: (i) velocity increases from 100–300 m s–1 in the upper 100 m to 4 km s–1 at 5 km depth, (ii) a more gradual increase from 4 km s–1 to 6 km s–1 at 25 km depth, (iii) a discontinuity at a depth of 25 km and (iv) a constant value of 7 km s–1 at depths from 25 km to about 60 km. The exact details of the velocity variation in the upper 5 to 10 km of the Moon cannot yet be resolved but self-compression of rock powders cannot duplicate the observed magnitude of the velocity change and the steep velocity-depth gradient. Other textural or compositional changes must be important in the upper 5 km of the Moon. The only serious candidates for the lower lunar crust are anorthositic or gabbroic rocks.Paper dedicated to Professor Harold C. Urey on the occasion of his 80th birthday on 29 April, 1973.  相似文献

A sea-level cosmic ray burst detector was in operation at the time of occurrence of 16 Vela bursts, between 1970 and 1973. No events were seen. Upper limits for primary -rays of 1011 eV or higher were set at 10–29 erg cm–2 Hz–1.Paper presented at the COSPAR Symposium on Fast Transients in X- and Gamma-Rays, held at Varna, Bulgaria, 29–31 May, 1975.  相似文献

Density models for the Moon, including the effects of temperature and pressure, can satisfy the mass and moment of inertia of the Moon and the presence of a low density crust indicated by the seismic refraction results only if the lunar mantle is chemically or mineralogically inhomogeneous. IfC/MR 2 exceeds 0.400, the inferred density of the upper mantle must be greater than that of the lower mantle at similar conditions by at least 0.1 g cm–3 for any of the temperature profiles proposed for the lunar interior. The average mantle density lies between 3.4 and 3.5 g cm–3, though the density of the upper mantle may be greater. The suggested density inversion is gravitationally unstable, but the implied deviatoric stresses in the mantle need be no larger than those associated with lunar gravity anomalies. UsingC/MR 3=0.400 and the recent seismic evidence suggesting a thin, high density zone beneath the crust and a partially molten core, successful density models can be found for a range of temperature profiles. Temperature distributions as cool as several inferred from the lunar electrical conductivity profile would be excluded. The density and probable seismic velocity for the bulk of the mantle are consistent with a pyroxenite composition and a 100 MgO/(MgO+FeO) molecular ratio of less than 80.Communication presented at the Lunar Science Institute Conference on Geophysical and Geochemical Exploration of the Moon and Planets, January 10–12, 1973.  相似文献

According to the classical theory of equilibrium figures surfaces of equal density, potential and pressure concur (let call them isobars). Isobars may be represented by means of Liapunov power series in small parameter q, up to the first approximation coincident with centrifugal to gravitational force ratio on the equator. A. M. Liapunov has proved the existence of the universal convergence radius q : above mentioned series converge for all bodies if q < q . Using Liapunov's algorithm and symbolic calculus tools we have calculated q = 0.000370916. Evidently, convergence radius q 0 may be much greater in non-pathological situations. We plan to examine several simplest cases. In the present paper, we find q 0 for homogeneous liquid. The convergence radius turns out to be unexpectedly large coinciding with the upper boundary value q 0 = 0.337 for Maclaurin ellipsoids.  相似文献

Lunar physical librations and laser ranging   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The analysis of lunar laser ranging data requires very accurate calculations of the lunar physical librations. Libration terms are given which arise from the additive and planetary terms in the lunar theory. The large size of the recently discovered terms due to third degree gravitational harmonics will allow some of these harmonics to be measured, in addition to and, by laser ranging to the Moon. Combining the laser ranging determinations of = 630.6 ± 0.5 × 10–6 and = 226.4 ± 3.0 × 10–6 with lunar orbiter measurements ofC 20 andC 22 givesC/MR 2=0.395 -0.010 +0.006 . Numerical integration promises to be an effective method of calculating librations. Comparison of numerical integrations with analytic series indicates that the calculation of the series due to third and fourth degree harmonics is not yet as accurate as the more extensively developed second degree terms.Communication presented at the Conference on Lunar Dynamics and Observational Coordinate Systems, held January 15–17, 1973, at the Lunar Science Institute, Houston, Tex., U.S.A.  相似文献

The Ulysses spacecraft encountered the planet Jupiter in February 1992, on its journey towards high heliospheric latitude. During the approach to the planet, as well as on the outbound pass, while receding from the Jovian bow shock, the Plasma Frequency Receiver that is part of the Unified Radio and Plasma Wave experiment (URAP) recorded bursts of plasma waves in the frequency range of a few kHz. These emissions, first observed by the PWS experiment onboard the Voyager spacecraft, have been identified as upstream electron plasma waves. In this paper, we present the first analysis of the characteristics of these emissions, which are very similar to those found in the Earth's electron foreshock, upstream of the Earth's bow shock. These bursty emissions, with a peak frequency very close to the local electron plasma frequency Fpe, have a typical electric field amplitude in the range 0.01–0.1 mV m−1, with some bursts above 1 mV m−1. The frequency bandwidth over which significant power can be found above the instrument background noise ranges from below 0.2 Fpc to about 2 Fpc. On the basis of our present knowledge of similar emissions observed at Earth, we suggest that the broadband emissions are triggered by suprathermal (a few tens of eV) electrons, streaming back from Jupiter's bow shock.  相似文献

We have used more than 4 years of Mars Express ion data to estimate the escape of heavy ions ( and ) from Mars. To take the limited field of view of the instrument into account, the data has been binned into spatial bins and angular bins to create average distribution functions for different positions in the near Mars space. The net escape flux for the studied low solar activity period, between May 2007 and May 2011, is 2.0 ± 0.2 × 1024 s−1. The escape has been calculated independently for four different quadrants in the YMSO − ZMSO plane, south, dusk, north and dawn. Escape is highest from the northern and dusk quadrants, 0.6 ± 0.1 × 1024 s−1, and smallest from the south and dawn quadrants, 0.4 ± 0.1 × 1024 s−1. The flux ratio of molecular ( and ) to O+ ions is 0.9 ± 0.1, averaged over all quadrants. The flux difference between the north and south quadrants is statistically significant, and is presumed to be due to the presence of significant crustal magnetic fields in the southern hemisphere, reducing the outflow. The difference between the dawn and dusk quadrants is likely due to the magnetic tension associated with the nominal Parker angle spiral, which should lead to higher average magnetic tension on the dusk side. The escape increases during periods of high solar wind flux and during times when co-rotating interaction regions (CIR) affect Mars. In the latter case the increase is a factor 2.4-2.9 as compared to average conditions.  相似文献

The results of observations of the Rosette emission nebula NGC 2237 with the radio telescope UTR-2 at frequencies 12.6, 14.7, 16.7, 20.0 and 25.0 MHz are given in the shape of contours of constant brightness temperature. The half-power beamwidth of the telescope to zenith at 25.0 MHz was 28×38. Density weighted mean values for the non-thermal radio emissivity between the Sun and the source (7.9×10–41 W m–3 Hz–1 ster–1 at 25.0 MHz) and the ratio of the intensity of emissivity generated before the area and the intensity of galactic radio emissivity appearing beyond the area equal to 1.3 have been obtained. The electron temperatureT e=3600 K, the optical depth (about ten at 25 MHz), the measure of emission (ME=3500 cm–6 pc), the electron densityN e=8 cm–3 and the nebular mass 16.6×10+3 M have been determined. A comparison with other observation results has been made.  相似文献

The effect of shock wave propagation is investigated with respect to precursor heating and acceleration, upstream, with the aim of explaining Supernova (SN) observations.A model is presented, where two different sources of Langmuir waves produce upstream heating and acceleration: (1) Langmuir waves excited by resonance beam particles, that are accelerated through the shock front by Bell's mechanism; and (2) Langmuir waves, created in the post-shock turbulent zone. The most important processes considered in the calculations are: (1) the heating efficiency of beam particles of different velocity; (2) Bell's acceleration efficiency; (3) the spectrum of Langmuir waves created in a turbulent regime; (4) the effects of density, and of the density gradient in the medium, where the shock propagates. The calculations are applied to type II SN. The results show that temperatures of 105–106 K, obtained in the preshock region, can explain P-Cygni observed line profiles. Moreover, accelerations of the plasma in front of the shock up tov108 cm s–1 by momentum exchange, are in good agreement with observations.Partially supported by Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Technológico (CNPq) and Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP).  相似文献

The Apollo 14 Suprathermal Ion Detector Experiment observed a series of bursts of 48.6 eV water vapor ions at the lunar surface during a 14-h period on March 7, 1971. The maximum flux observed was 108 ions cm–2 s–1 sr–1. These ions were also observed at Apollo 12, 183 km to the west. Evaluation of specific artificial sources including the Apollo missions and the Russian Lunokhod leads to the conclusion that the water vapor did not come from a man-made source. Natural sources exogenous to the Moon such as comets and the solar wind are also found to be inadequate to explain the observed fluxes. Consequently, these water vapor ions appear to be of lunar origin.Paper dedicated to Prof. Harold C. Urey on the occasion of his 80th birthday on 29 April 1973.  相似文献

The Rice University Suprathermal Ion Detector Experiment regularly observes ion events normally ranging from 250 eV q?1 to 1000 eV q?1 all through the lunar night. These ion events occur most often 2 to 3 days prior to the sunrise terminator. There is also a secondary activity peak 3 to 4 days after local sunset on the Moon. The events are normally of 4 hr or less in duration and the integral flux is 106 ions cm?2 s?1 ster?1. This article discusses the character of these events and presents the preliminary findings of a detailed study begun on this subject.  相似文献

A general Hamiltonian for a rotating Moon in the field of the Earth is expanded in terms of parameters orienting the spin angular momentum relative to the pricipal axes of the Moon and relative to coordinate axes fixed in the orbital plane. The effects of elastic distortion are included as modifications of the moment of inertia tensor, where the magnitude of the distortion is parameterized by the Love numberk 2. The principal periodic terms in the longitude of a point on the Moon due to variations of the tide caused by the Earth are shown to have amplitudes between 3.9 × 10–3 and 1.6 × 10–2 with a period of an anomalistic month, 3.0 × 10–4 and 1.2 × 10–3 with a period of one-half an anomalistic month and 2.4 × 10–4 and 9.6 × 10–4 with a period of one-half of a nodical month. The extremes in the amplitudes correspond to rigidities of 8 × 1011 cgs and 2 × 1011 cgs, respectively, the former rigidity being comparable to that of the Earth. Only the largest amplitude given above is comparable to that detectable by the projected precision of the laser ranging to the lunar retrorereflectors, and this amplitude corresponds to an improbably low rigidity for the Moon. A detailed derivation of the free wobble of the lunar spin axis about the axis of maximum moment of inertia is given, where it is shown that elasticity can alter the period of the free wobble of 75.3 yr by only 3 × 10–4 to 10–3 of this period. Also, the effect of elasticity on the period of free libration is completely negligible by many orders of magnitude. If the Moon's rigidity is close to that of the Earth there is no effect of elasticity on the rotation which can be measured with the laser ranging and, therefore, no elastic properties of the Moon can be determined from variations in the rotation.Currently on leave from the Dept. of Physics, University of California, Santa, Barbara, California.Communication presented at the conference on Lunar Dynamics and Observational Coordinate Systems held January 15–17, 1973 at the Lunar Science Institute, Houston, Tex., U.S.A.  相似文献

Based on the observed dependence of the mean charge of several elements (C, O, Ne, Mg, Si and Fe) on energy for the gradual event of 6 November 1997 we deduce plasma parameters in the accelerating site. This is done in the framework of a charge-consistent acceleration model which incorporates ionisation and recombination processes during heavy ion energization by a parallel shock wave. To obtain good fits to observations we have to assume for the product of the characteristic acceleration time and number density T q ac N (3–10) ×109 s cm–3 and temperature T=106 K of a plasma where all the elements under consideration originated.  相似文献

The fluxes and spectra of galactic and extragalactic neutrinos at energy 1011–1019 eV are calculated. In particular, the neutrino flux from the normal galaxies is calculated taking into account the spectral index distribution. The only assumption that seriously affects the calculated neutrino flux atE v 1017 eV is the power-like generation spectrum of protons in the entire considered energy region. The normal galaxies with the accepted parameters generate the metagalactic equivalent electron component (electrons+their radiation) with energy density e8.5×10–7 eV cm–3, while the density of the observed diffuse X-ray radiation alone is 100 times higher. This requires the existence of other neutrino sources and we found the minimized neutrino flux under two limitations: (1) the power-law generation spectrum of protons and (2) production of the observed energy density of the diffuse X-an -radiation. These requirements are met in the evolutionary model of origin of the metagalactic cosmic rays with modern energy density M83.6×10–7 eV cm–3.The possibility of experiments with cosmic neutrinos of energyE v 3×1017 eV is discussed. The upper bound on neutrino-nucleon cross-section <2.2×10–29 cm2 is obtained in evolutionary model from the observed zenith angular distribution of extensive air showers. In Appendix 2 the diffuse X-and -ray flux arising together with neutrino flux is calculated. It agrees with observed flux in the entire energy range from 1 keV up to 100 MeV.  相似文献

It is shown that cosmic radiation almost follows a Planck distribution, because just as matter is formed, its density of energy is negligible in comparison with that of radiation, and that the present age of the Universe does not depend on the particular manner in which the matter is formed. Thus, if the results of the latest observations (which imply a deceleration parameterq=1.6) are combined with the assumption that the present age of the Universe is at least 12×109 yr, they lead to a hyperbolic oscillating universe with a negative cosmological constant (<–1.53×10–56 cm–2) and a present mass-density m of less than 1.2×10–30 g cm–3. If the cosmological constant is taken to be zero, a solution is only possible if we are prepared to admit a rate of evolution of galaxies with a deceleration parameterq<0.52. Three types of oscillating universe are then possible, but the heperbolic type is the most probable. If Hubble's constant is greater than 63.4 km s–1 Mpc–1, the solutions are only hyperbolic universes with <+0.45×10–56 cm–2 and m <4.8×10-30g cm-3.

All four large EUV bursts (peak 10–1030 Å flux enhancements 2 ergs cm–2 s–1 at 1 AU as deduced from sudden frequency deviations), for which there were available concurrent white light observations of at least fair quality, were detected as white light flares. The rise times and maxima of the white light emissions coincided with rise times and maxima of the EUV bursts. The frequency of strong EUV bursts suggests that white light flares may occur at the rate of five or six per year near sunspot maximum. All of the white light flare areas coincided with intense bright areas of the H flares. These small areas appeared to be sources of high velocity ejecta in H. The white light flares occurred as several knots or patches of 2 to 15 arc-sec diameter, with bright cores perhaps less than 2 arc-sec diameter (1500 km). They preferred the outer penumbral borders of strong sunspots within 10 arc-sec of a longitudinal neutral line in the magnetic field. The peak continuum flux enhancement over the 3500–6500 Å wavelength range is about the same order of magnitude as the peak 10–1030 Å flux enhancement.  相似文献

Magnetometer data obtained during the first four lunations after the deployment of the Apollo 15 subsatellite have been used to construct contour maps of the lunar magnetic field referred to 100 km altitude. These contour maps cover a relatively small band on the lunar surface. Within the region covered there is a marked near side-far side asymmetry. The near-side field is generally weaker and less structured than the far-side field. The strongest intrinsic lunar magnetic field detected is between the craters Van de Graaff and Aitken, centered at 20°S and 172°E. The variation in field strength with altitude for this feature suggests that its scale size is on the order of 80 km. A magnetization contrast between this region and its surroundings of the order of 6 × 10–5 emu-cm–3 is obtained assuming a 10-km thick slab. Preliminary Apollo 16 magnetometer data at extremely low altitude (0 to 10 km) show a very structured magnetic field with field strengths up to 56. Large compressions in the magnetic field magnitude, just above the lunar limb regions, are occasionally detected when the Moon is in the solar wind. The occurrence of limb compressions is strongly dependent on the selenographic coordinates of the lunar region on the solar wind terminator beneath the orbit of the sub-satellite. The discovery of remanent magnetization of varying strength over much of the lunar surface and its correlation with limb compression source regions supports the hypothesis that limb compressions are due to the deflection of the solar wind by regions of strong magnetization at the lunar limbs. If this hypothesis is correct, then the map of lunar regions associated with compressions indicates that the northerly equatorial region on the far side is less strongly magnetized than the southerly equatorial region on the far side.Paper dedicated to Professor Harold C. Urey on the occasion of his 80th birthday on 29 April, 1973.  相似文献

A solar flare that occurred on the west limb at 1981, March 25, 2038 UT generated a massive, rapidly-expanding optical coronal transient, which moved outward with an approximately constant velocity of 800 km s–1. An associated magnetohydrodynamic shock travelled out ahead of the transient with a velocity estimated to be approximately 1000 km s–1. The optical and radio data on the transient and shock fit well with general theories concerning piston-driven shocks and with current MHD models for propagation of such shocks through the solar corona.  相似文献
