Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are considered to be associated with large-scale, closed magnetic field structures in the corona. These structures change throughout the solar activity cycle following the evolution of the general solar magnetic field. To study the variation of CME characteristics with the evolution of coronal magnetic structures, we compute the 3-D coronal magnetic field at minimum and maximum of activity with a source-surface potential field model. In particular, we study the central latitude distribution of CMEs and the frequency of occurrence of the different CME types in these two periods. We find that most CMEs are indeed associated with large-scale, magnetically closed structures, and their latitudinal distribution follows the solar cycle latitudinal changes of the location of these structures. We also find that different CME types, which constitute different fractions of the total during the maximum and the minimum, are associated with different shapes and orientations of the closed structures at different times of the solar cycle.  相似文献

The magnetic field changes in the corona at the site of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been investigated using the potential field-source surface model. It is shown that a CME is accompanied by the opening of closed field lines that formed the streamer's helmet base prior to the onset of a coronal disturbance. Two to three days after the appearance of the CME, the field configuration at the location of the coronal ejection reverts approximately to the state pre-existing before the generation of the CME. The appearance of small transient open magnetic tubes has been found after eruption of the coronal mass. These magnetic tubes seem to be the analogs for transient coronal holes.Taking into account the results of calculations of the field changes in the neighbourhood of the CME occurrence site, we have suggested a possible mechanism governing the spatio-temporal correlation between some flares and CMEs. Also, a possible mechanism has been proposed for field reconfiguration in the corona, leading to loss of the equilibrium of the magnetic configuration and to the subsequent generation of a CME in the region of coronal streamer chains separating coronal holes with same-polarity magnetic field.  相似文献

Based on our previous works regarding solar eruptions, we focus on the relationships among different eruptive phenomena, such as solar flares, eruptive prominences and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). The three processes show clear correlations under certain circumstances. The correlation between a CME and solar flare depends the energy that stored in the relevant magnetic structure, which is available to drive the eruption: the more energy that is stored, the better the correlation is; otherwise, the correlation is poor. The correlation between a CME and eruptive prominence, on the other hand, depends on the plasma mass concentration in the configuration prior to the eruption: if the mass concentration is significant, a CME starts with an eruptive prominence, otherwise, a CME develops an without an apparent associated eruptive prominence. These results confirm that solar flares, eruptive prominences and CMEs are different significances of a single physical process that is related to the energy release in a disrupted coronal magnetic field. The impact of gravity on CME propagation and the above correlations is also investigated. Our calculations indicate that the effect of gravity is not significant unless the strength of the background field in the disrupted magnetic configuration becomes weak, say weaker than 30 G.

The onset stage of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is difficult to observe and is poorly studied. In spite of their practical importance, methods for CME predictions with sufficient lead times are only in the nascent stages of development. The most probable CME mechanism is a catastrophic loss of equilibrium of a large-scale current system in the corona (a flux rope). A twisted magnetic rope is maintained by the tension of field lines of photospheric sources until parameters of the system reach critical values and the equilibrium is lost. Unfortunately, there is low-density plasma (coronal cavity) in most of the rope volume; thus, it is difficult to observe a rope. However, the lower parts of the helical field lines of a rope are fine traps for the dense cold plasma of prominences. Thus, prominences are the best tracers of flux ropes in the corona. The maximal height up to which the rope is in stable equilibrium can be found by analyzing the distribution of the magnetic field generated by photospheric sources in the corona. Comparing this critical height with the actually observed prominence height, one can estimate the probability of the loss of equilibrium by a magnetic rope with a following eruption of prominences and coronal mass ejections.  相似文献

Large-scale solar eruptions, known as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), are regarded as the main drivers of space weather. The exact trigger mechanism of these violent events is still not completely clear; however, the solar magnetic field indisputably plays a crucial role in the onset of CMEs. The strength and morphology of the solar magnetic field are expected to have a decisive effect on CME properties, such as size and speed. This study aims to investigate the evolution of a magnetic configuration when driven by the emergence of new magnetic flux in order to get a better insight into the onset of CMEs and their magnetic structure. The three-dimensional, time-dependent equations for ideal magnetohydrodynamics are numerically solved on a spherical mesh. New flux emergence in a bipolar active region causes destabilisation of the initial stationary structure, finally resulting in an eruption. The initial magnetic topology is suitable for the ??breakout?? CME scenario to work. Although no magnetic flux rope structure is present in the initial condition, highly twisted magnetic field lines are formed during the evolution of the system as a result of internal reconnection due to the interaction of the active region magnetic field with the ambient field. The magnetic energy built up in the system and the final speed of the CME depend on the strength of the overlying magnetic field, the flux emergence rate, and the total amount of emerged flux. The interaction with the global coronal field makes the eruption a large-scale event, involving distant parts of the solar surface.  相似文献

Activity associated with the solar origin of coronal mass ejections   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) observed in 1980 with the HAO Coronagraph/Polarimeter on the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) satellite are compared with other forms of solar activity that might be physically related to the ejections. The solar phenomena checked and the method of association used were intentionally patterned after those of Munro et al.'s (1979) analysis of mass ejections observed with the Skylab coronagraph to facilitate comparison of the two epochs. Comparison of the results reveals that the types and degree of CME associations are similar near solar activity minimum and at maximum. For both epochs, most CMEs with associations had associated eruptive prominences and the proportions of association of all types of activity were similar. We also found a high percentage of association between SMM CMEs and X-ray long duration events (LDEs), in agreement with Skylab results. We conclude that most CMEs are the result of the destabilization and eruption of a prominence and its overlying coronal structure, or of a magnetic structure capable of supporting a prominence.Much of this work was performed as a Visiting Scientist at the High Altitude Observatory/NCAR.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

This paper deals with the influence of the distance of the apparent axes of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from a neutral line (NL) on the source surface and of coronal hole (CH) boundaries upon apparent characteristics of CMEs: e.g., the structure, the velocity of individual features, and the width.(a) It is found that the chance of measuring a CME velocity of ascent appears to decrease with increasing distance from a neutral line or coronal hole.(b) The apparent velocity of a CME appears to depend on the distance of its core from a neutral line or coronal hole boundary. CME speeds for events within 15 deg of a surface neutral line are significantly higher than those apparently much farther from surface neutral lines.(c) CME spans tend to be wider when they are more closely associated with surface neutral lines. It is shown that the contribution of CMEs in the neighbourhood of the NL (the heliomagnetic latitude of the CME apparent axis L < 15 deg) decreases with increasing length of the chain of coronal streamers separating the CH of like polarity of the magnetic field and depends on the character of the relationship between CMEs and other forms of activity. The study revealed a concentration of the apparent axes of CMEs toward zero lines of the photospheric magnetic field from the J. M. Wilcox Solar Observatory at Stanford.  相似文献

Magnetic clouds are a class of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (CME) predominantly characterised by a smooth rotation in the magnetic field direction, indicative of a magnetic flux rope structure. Many magnetic clouds, however, also contain sharp discontinuities within the smoothly varying magnetic field, suggestive of narrow current sheets. In this study we present observations and modelling of magnetic clouds with strong current sheet signatures close to the centre of the apparent flux rope structure. Using an analytical magnetic flux rope model, we demonstrate how such current sheets can form as a result of a cloud’s kinematic propagation from the Sun to the Earth, without any external forces or influences. This model is shown to match observations of four particular magnetic clouds remarkably well. The model predicts that current sheet intensity increases for increasing CME angular extent and decreasing CME radial expansion speed. Assuming such current sheets facilitate magnetic reconnection, the process of current sheet formation could ultimately lead a single flux rope becoming fragmented into multiple flux ropes. This change in topology has consequences for magnetic clouds as barriers to energetic particle propagation.  相似文献

Using Nancay Radioheliograph (NRH) imaging observations, combined with SOHO/Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) magnetogram observations and coronal magnetic field extrapolation, we studied the magnetic nature of metric noise storms that are associated with coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Four events are selected: the events of 2000 July 14, 2001 April 26, 2002 August 16 and 2001 March 28. The identified noise storm sources cover or partially cover the active regions (ARs), but the centers of storm sources are offset from the ARs. Using extrapolated magnetic field lines, we find that the noise storm sources trace the boundary between the open and closed field lines. We demonstrate that the disappearance of noise storm source is followed by the appearance of the burst source. The burst sources spread on the solar disk and their distributions correspond to the extent of the CME in LASCO C2 field of view. All the SOHO/Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) dimmings associ- ated with noise storm sources are located at the periphery of noise storms where the magnetic lines of force were previously closed and low-lying. When the closed field becomes partially or fully open, the basic configurations of noise storm sources are changed, then the noise storm sources are no longer observed. These observations provide the information that the variations of noise storms manifest the restructuring or reconfiguring of the coronal magnetic field.  相似文献

The semiannual mean CME velocities for the time interval of 1979–1989 have been analyzed to reveal a complex cyclic variation with a peak at the solar cycle maximum and a secondary peak at the minimum of the cycle. The growth of the mean CME width is accompanied by a growth of the mean CME velocity. It is shown that the cyclic variations of the mean CME velocity and the mean CME width are associated with the cyclic variations of the large-scale magnetic field structure and that the secondary peak of the semiannual mean CME velocity in 1985–1986 is due to a significant contribution of fast CMEs with a width of 100° at the minimum of the cycle. This peak is supposed to be due to the increasing role of the global large-scale magnetic field system with a characteristic size of cells of 70°–100° at the minimum of the cycle and the respective particularities of the large-scale magnetic field configuration in the corona.  相似文献

We consider the influence of the solar global magnetic-field structure (GMFS) cycle evolution on the occurrence rate and parameters of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in Solar Cycles 23?–?24. It has been shown that, over solar cycles, CMEs are not distributed randomly, but they are regulated by evolutionary changes in the GMFS. It is proposed that the generation of magnetic Rossby waves in the solar tachocline results in the GMFS cycle changes. Each Rossby wave period favors a particular GMFS. It is proposed that the changes in wave periods result in GMFS reorganization and consequently in CME location, occurrence rate, and parameter changes. The CME rate and parameters depend on the sharpness of the GMFS changes, the strength of the global magnetic field, and the phase of a cycle.  相似文献

Nowadays the primordial importance of the magnetic field for coronal plasma physics is well known. However, its determination is only made in cool regions, mainly the photosphere and prominences. The extrapolation to the corona gives some indications of the magnetic structure but is not presently sufficiently reliable. So it is important to consider all the other observable physical effects of the magnetic field. In this puzzle, eruptive prominences may play a key role because the cool plasma is forced to move along field lines, which can then be visualized. In the strongest field regions, flares also give such information, while coronal mass ejections (CME) play such a role at larger scales. The magnetic field, which is at the base of the physical processes, is a common link between these different events.Observed properties of solar prominence eruptions are reviewed, then their relationships with CMEs and flares are discussed, with the help of present models. We emphasize the importance of magnetic measurements in future coordinated observations.Invited paper presented at the IAU Commission 10 Meeting on Dynamics and Structure of Prominences in Buenos Aires.  相似文献

Sympathetic coronal mass ejections (CMEs) usually occur in different active regions connected by interconnecting magnetic loops, while homologous CMEs occur within the same active region with an almost the same background magnetic field, and so are similar in shapes. Two sympathetic CMEs erupted within 3 hours on 2002 May 22, originating from the same active region, AR 9948. Their multi-wavelength data were collected and analyzed. It is suggested that emerging flux triggered the occurrence of the first CME and the corresponding flare, the reconnection inflow of which in turn triggered the eruption of the second CME. Based on the fact that the two sympathetic CMEs have many similarities, in their shapes, their low-lying dimming areas, etc., we tentatively propose, for the first time, the phenomenon of sympathetic homologous CMEs.  相似文献

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are one of the primary manifestations of solar activity and can drive severe space weather effects. Therefore, it is vital to work towards being able to predict their occurrence. However, many aspects of CME formation and eruption remain unclear, including whether magnetic flux ropes are present before the onset of eruption and the key mechanisms that cause CMEs to occur. In this work, the pre-eruptive coronal configuration of an active region that produced an interplanetary CME with a clear magnetic flux rope structure at 1 AU is studied. A forward-S sigmoid appears in extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) data two hours before the onset of the eruption (SOL2012-06-14), which is interpreted as a signature of a right-handed flux rope that formed prior to the eruption. Flare ribbons and EUV dimmings are used to infer the locations of the flux rope footpoints. These locations, together with observations of the global magnetic flux distribution, indicate that an interaction between newly emerged magnetic flux and pre-existing sunspot field in the days prior to the eruption may have enabled the coronal flux rope to form via tether-cutting-like reconnection. Composition analysis suggests that the flux rope had a coronal plasma composition, supporting our interpretation that the flux rope formed via magnetic reconnection in the corona. Once formed, the flux rope remained stable for two hours before erupting as a CME.  相似文献

Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and their interplanetary counterparts (interplanetary coronal mass ejections, ICMEs) are responsible for large solar energetic particle events and severe geomagnetic storms. They can modulate the intensity of Galactic cosmic rays, resulting in non-recurrent Forbush decreases (FDs). We investigate the connection between CME manifestations and FDs. We used specially processed data from the worldwide neutron monitor network to pinpoint the characteristics of the recorded FDs together with CME-related data from the detailed online catalog based upon the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)/Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) data. We report on the correlations of the FD magnitude to the CME initial speed, the ICME transit speed, and the maximum solar wind speed. Comparisons between the features of CMEs (mass, width, velocity) and the characteristics of FDs are also discussed. FD features for halo, partial halo, and non-halo CMEs are presented and discussed.  相似文献

The cells of photospheric background magnetic fields during Carrington rotation 2009 in October–November 2003 are considered. The small number of large sunspots and the high activity on the Sun in this period allow the correspondence between the activity of background field cells (flares) and the appearance of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) observed with the LASCO coronagraphs to be established without statistical analyses. The sunspots of opposite polarities in one background field cell are shown to serve as the legs of the same CME. The separation between them is close to 30°.  相似文献

The structure and variations of open field regions (OFRs) are analyzed against the solar cycle for the time interval of 1970–1996. The cycle of the large-scale magnetic field (LSMF) begins in the vicinity of maximum Wolf numbers, i.e. during the polar field reversal. At the beginning of the LSMF cycle, the polar and mid-latitude magnetic field systems are connected by a narrow bridge, but later they evolve independently. The polar field at the latitudes above 60° has a completely open configuration and fills the whole area of the polar caps near the cycle minimum of local fields. At this time, essentially all of the open solar flux is from the polar caps. The mid-latitude open field regions (OFRs) occur at a latitude of 30–40° away from solar minimum and drift slowly towards the equator to form a typical 'butterfly diagram' at the periphery of the local field zone. This supports the concept of a single complex – 'large-scale magnetic field – active region – coronal hole'. The rotation characteristics of OFRs have been analyzed to reveal a near solid-body rotation, much more rigid than in the case of sunspots. The rotation characteristics are shown to depend on the phase of the solar cycle.  相似文献
