To complement physical and chemical data, information of biological communities is important to assess the qualities of mangrove sediments receiving wastewater. Ciliate communities have cosmopolitan distribution, short life cycle and high sensitivity to pollutants, which make them useful as biological indicators of the sediment environment. In most literature, ciliates are widely used as bioindicators for the state of water quality. In this study, the physico-chemical parameters and ciliate community structure of surface sediment collected at different sampling points from two constructed mangrove (Aegiceras and Sonneratia) belts for treatment of municipal sewage in southern China were investigated. Results showed that most (> 80%) of the 216 species ciliates identified at the two constructed mangrove belts were either omnivorous or bacterivorous. Sediment redox potential (Eh) was considered an important factor to govern the distribution of ciliate species within the mangrove sediment. The saprobic system originally derived from freshwater ecosystem was used to evaluate the saprobic degrees of these constructed mangrove belts. Saprobic index (SI) values declined from the sewage inlet to the outlet points of the constructed belts, suggesting better sediment quality at the outlet point caused by treatment processes within the mangrove belt system. Sediment quality of the sewage outlet area of the constructed Aegiceras belt was determined as class II-III (SI = 2.48), while that of the Sonneratia belt was as class III (SI = 2.71) according to the saprobic classification, indicating that a better sewage treatment efficiency was apparent in the Aegiceras than Sonneratia belt. The present data suggested that ciliates could serve as a good bioindicator in assessing organically polluted sediment qualities.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to establish the distribution, speciation and bioavailability of mercury in mangrove sediments. A systemic survey of surficial sediments from 13 mangrove wetlands of China was carried out. Hg concentrations ranged from 2.3–903.6 ng g−1, with an average value of 189.4 ng g−1. Of the 13 areas surveyed, the Hg content in sediments was similar to background levels in 6 areas but was much higher in the other seven areas. Hg levels were affected by natural and anthropogenic factors, including terrestrial pollutants, geomorphic properties, and indirectly by economic status. Hg levels were positively correlated with organic matter, pH, and silt and clay fractions, but Hg was negatively correlated with sand fraction. In most mangrove wetlands, Hg existed primarily in the form of volatile Hg. Hg is easily bioaccumulated in mangrove wetlands and may be the natural source of Hg emissions to the atmosphere.  相似文献

A total of 120 samples comprising of water (45), sediment (45) and mangrove originated food (30) collected from mangrove ecosystems of Goa were screened for Escherichia coli employing ISO-16654 method. Seventy-one (59.16%) samples were positive for E. coli. The E. coli isolates were further characterized by serotyping, virulence gene profiling and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Water and sediment samples were analyzed for physico-chemical parameters. The serotypes reported were O1, O10, O13, O17, O36, O41, O50, O68, O105, O116, O141, O148, O159, O162 and rough types while, 23 strains could not be typed. The stx1 and stx2 genes were detected in 33(46.47%) and 16(22.53%) isolates, respectively. The XbaI restriction digestion patterns of the stx positive strains were diverse. Interestingly, few strains isolated from diarrheal patients and from water, sediment and food from mangrove sources were genetically similar. The study showed that the mangrove ecosystem could be a potential reservoir for pathogenic E. coli.  相似文献

The change in community diversity and structure of the indigenous, dominant, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-degrading bacterial genera, Sphingomonas and Mycobacterium, due to contamination in the environment is not very well known. A combination of PCR-DGGE with specific primers and a cultivation-dependent microbiological method was used to detect different populations of Sphingomonas and Mycobacterium in mangrove sediments. The structure of the entire bacterial community (including Sphingomonas) did not show a shift due to environmental contamination, whereas the diversity of Mycobacterium populations in mangrove sediments with higher PAH contamination increased from exposure between Day 0 and Day 30. The isolated Mycobacterium strains migrated to the same position as the major bands of the bacterial communities in Mycobacterium-specific DGGE. A dioxygenase gene system, nidA, which is commonly found in PAH-degrading Mycobacterium strains, was also detected in the more highly contaminated sediment slurries. The present study revealed that Mycobacterium species were the dominant PAH-degraders and played an important role in degrading PAHs in contaminated mangrove sediments.  相似文献

Total mercury was analyzed as a function of body length, season, and diet in four commercially and recreationally important marine fish, bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix), goosefish (Lophius americanus), silver hake (Merluccius bilinearis), and summer flounder (Paralichthys dentatus), collected from continental shelf waters of the northwest Atlantic Ocean. Mercury levels in the dorsal muscle tissue of 115 individuals ranged from 0.006 to 1.217 μg/g (wet weight) and varied significantly among species. The relationship between predator length and mercury concentration was linear for bluefish and summer flounder, while mercury levels increased with size at an exponential rate for silver hake and goosefish. Mercury burdens were the highest overall in bluefish, but increased with size at the greatest rate in silver hake. Seasonal differences were detected for bluefish and goosefish with mercury levels peaking during summer and spring, respectively. Prey mercury burdens and predator foraging habits are discussed as the primary factors influencing mercury accumulation.  相似文献

This study established wetland microcosms that were either unplanted or planted in monoculture with native mangrove species in Taiwan (Avicennia marina, Rhizophora stylosa, and Lumnitzera racemosa) for the purpose of receiving high-salinity mariculture effluents; additionally, the microcosms operated at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs). Plant growth and the performance of the microcosms with respect to pollutant removal were investigated. The results showed that seedlings of all three mangrove species survived and grew sufficiently well under continuous flooding. The presence of mangroves consistently improved SS, BOD5, and TP removal, particularly under short HRT conditions. The mangrove microcosms removed pollutants from the mariculture effluents with efficiencies of 5.7-27.1% (SS), 4.9-36.3% (BOD5), 18.7-29.9% (TP), 21.2-49.8% (NH4-N), and 5.4-37.7% (NOx-N). A. marina and L. racemosa were more tolerant of continuous flooding than R. stylosa. However, no species displayed consistently superior performance in decreasing all pollutant-related parameters investigated. For all pollutants, microcosms operating at a 2-d HRT exhibited a higher removal efficiency than those operating at a 0.5-d HRT.  相似文献

The effects of salinity on the removal of dissolved organic carbon and nutrients from municipal wastewater by constructed mangrove microcosms planted with Aegiceras corniculatum were investigated. During the four-month wastewater treatment, the treatment efficiency was reduced by high salinity, and the removal percentages of dissolved organic carbon, ammonia-N and inorganic N dropped from 91% to 71%, from 98% to 83% and from 78% to 56%, respectively, with salinity increasing from 0 to 30 parts per thousands (ppt). In spite of such inhibition at high salinity, 100% of the effluents discharge from the constructed mangrove microcosms still complied with the discharge standards set by the Hong Kong Government for Coastal Water Control Zones. These results suggested that constructed mangrove wetland treatment systems were promising to effectively treat municipal wastewater, even those with high salinity. In addition, the denitrification potential in soil was found to be retarded by the high salinity while mangrove plants grew best at 15 ppt salinity condition.  相似文献

A pilot-scale mangrove wetland was constructed in Futian, Shenzhen for municipal sewage treatment. Three identical belts (length: 33 m, width: 3 m, depth: 0.5 m) were filled with stone (bottom), gravel and mangrove sand (surface). Seedlings of two native mangrove species (Kandelia candel, Aegiceras corniculatum) and one exotic species (Sonneratia caseolaris) were transplanted to the belts with one species for each belt. The hydraulic loading was 5 m3 d−1 and hydraulic retention time 3 d. High levels of removal of COD, BOD5, TN, TP and NH3–N were obtained. The treatment efficiency of S. caseolaris and A. corniculatum was higher than that of K. candel. Faster plant growth was obtained for S. caseolaris. The substrate in the S. caseolaris belt also showed higher enzyme activities including dehydrogenase, cellulase, phosphatase, urease and β-glucosidase. The removal rates of organic matter and nutrients were positively correlated with plant growth. The results indicated that mangroves could be used in a constructed wetland for municipal sewage treatment, providing post-treatment to remove coliforms was also included.  相似文献

A statewide survey of Tasmanian coastal waters has shown that Platycephalus bassensis, a widespread, easily-caught, non-migratory demersal finfish, is a useful indicator species for mercury pollution. Using approximately twelve fish at each of 31 locations, the mean total mercury concentration in the muscle tissue ranged from 0.03 to 1.06 mg/kg (fresh wt basis), and clearly demonstrated a site dependence for mercury uptake in this species. The correlation between mercury concentration and fish size is shown to be valid only if the effect of location is taken into account. Even then, size accounts for only about 10% of the total variability in mercury concentration.  相似文献

There is an ongoing eutrophication process in the Ria de Aveiro coastal lagoon (Portugal), with progressive replacement of rooted primary producers for macroalgae. Taking advantage of a well-defined environmental contamination gradient, we studied mercury accumulation and distribution in the aboveground and the belowground biomass of several salt marsh plants, including the seagrass species Zostera noltii and the dominant green macroalgal species Enteromorpha sp. The results of these experiments were then placed into the context of the estuarine mercury cycle and transport from the contaminated area.All salt marsh plants accumulated mercury in the root system, with Halimione portulacoides showing the highest levels, with up to 1.3 mg kg−1 observed in the most contaminated area. Belowground/aboveground ratios were generally below 0.4, suggesting that salt marsh plants are efficient immobilizers and retainers of mercury agents. Moreover, due to their sediment accretion capacities, salt marsh plants seem to play an important role in the sequestration of mercury in estuarine sediments.Seagrasses, on the other hand, accumulated considerable amounts of mercury in the aboveground biomass with belowground/aboveground ratios reaching as high as 1.4. These results may be due to their different routes of uptake (roots and foliar uptake) which suggests that seagrass meadows can be an important agent in the export of mercury from contaminated areas, considering the high aboveground biomass replacement rates.Rooted macrophytes accumulate less mercury in their aboveground biomass than macroalgae. The change of primary producer dominance due to eutrophication can originate a 4- to 5-fold increase in primary producer associated mercury. This mercury would be available for export, making it bioavailable to estuarine food webs, which stresses the need to reverse the current eutrophic status of estuarine systems.  相似文献

The mercury content in the marine phanerogam Posidonia oceanica, sampled in an area near a chloralkali complex, has been measured and compared with that of the samples collected in a non-impacted region.Plants growing in the seawater facing the chlor-alkali complex showed mercury content of 0.19 μg g−1 f.w., compared with 0.02 μg g−1 f.w. in the samples from the control area. Sediments of the industrial area have mercury levels 20–30 times higher than those from the control area. As the mercury concentration in seawater of both areas is comparable, the mercury content in the plant appears to be correlated with mercury levels in the sediment; probably the metal uptake in Posidonia oceanica takes place mainly through the root system.  相似文献

Mangroves are sensitive ecosystems of prominent ecological value that lamentably have lost much of their areas across the world. The vulnerability of mangroves grown in proximity to cities requires the development of new technologies for the remediation of acute oil spills and chronic contaminations. Studies on oil remediation are usually performed with in vitro microcosms whereas in situ experiments are rare. The aim of this work was to evaluate oil degradation on mangrove ecosystems using in situ microcosms seeded with an indigenous hydrocarbonoclastic bacterial consortium (HBC). Although the potential degradation of oil through HBC has been reported, their seeding directly on the sediment did not stimulate oil degradation during the experimental period. This is probably due to the availability of carbon sources that are easier to degrade than petroleum hydrocarbons. Our results emphasize the fragility of mangrove ecosystems during accidental oil spills and also the need for more efficient technologies for their remediation.  相似文献

High concentrations of mercury have been measured in mussels (Mytilus edulis) collected in two ‘hot spot’ areas: (1) near a closed-down chemical factory on the west coast of the Limfjord, and (2) on groynes in the immediate vicinity of a chemical deposit in the dunes on the Danish west coast. By collecting comparable samples of mussels from chains of buoys, the mercury pollution in the western Limfjord could be traced 50–100 km into the central and innermost parts of the Limfjord as a gradual decreasing mercury concentration gradient. By collecting mussels from groynes north and south of the chemical deposit, it was possible to monitor the relative extent of the mercury leakage to the North Sea before and after the excavation of the deposit. The investigations have demonstrated the applicability of M. edulis as a monitoring organism for mercury when importance is attached to concentration gradients and distribution patterns in well defined and homogeneous samples of mussels collected from natural populations.  相似文献

During April 1975 thirty-six muscle samples of six predacious species of fish from the Andaman sea were collected for an analysis of their total mercury concentrations. The total mercury levels ranged from 0.026 to 0.234 ppm in yellowfin tuna (Neothunnus albacora), from 0.027 to 0.233 ppmin bigeye tuna (Parathunnus sibi), and from 0.057 to 0.478 ppm in four species of shark. Statistical analysis also showed positive linear regression and there was correlation between the mercury concentration and the weight of the yellowfin tuna, bigeye tuna, and shark. The rates of total mercury accumulation in yellowfin and bigeye tuna were not significantly different. A comparison between the total mercury level in the Andaman yellowfin and the Central Pacific yellowfin tuna is discussed.  相似文献

In the course of our works on mercury metabolism in marine organisms, we investigated in laboratory the technical feasibility and the scientific relevance of the simple benthic food chain ‘particles-mussel-starfish’. Mature starfish, Leptasterias polaris, fed over 45 days with contaminated mussels (Mytilus edulis), bioaccumulated organic mercury in all their tissues. The absorption rate of mercury in the first weeks of the experiment was respectively 0.238, 0.094, and 0.015 μg.g−1 d−1 (wet wt) in pyloric caeca, stomachs and body walls. Starfish retained about 50% of the organic mercury ingested mostly in pyloric caeca and calcerous skeleton (96–98%). After four weeks of regular accumulation, an auto-depuration process took place and mercury concentration in digestive organs was reduced even if the contaminated food was still provided. Coelomic fluid seems to be a barrier to the rapid dispersion of methylmercury into the whole animal and may play a role in the depuration process. These results provide evidence for the strong interest in the mussel-starfish food chain for fundamental studies of metal biotransfer in invertebrate marine organisms.  相似文献

The in situ uptake of mercury in tissues of Mytilus californianus was studied by exposing control specimens to waters at four depths near a submarine wastewater discharge for a period of 24 weeks. The response patterns observed for digestive gland, adductor muscle and gonadal tissues were strikingly different. Digestive gland concentrations increased rapidly to the heightened levels found for indigenous specimens. On the other hand, changes in the mercury content of adductor muscle were not statistically significant, and gonadal tissues generally exhibited a low rate of increase. In November 2011 gold was found at Mount Botak, Buru Island, Mollucas Province, Indonesia. Since 2012 mercury has been used to extract the gold requiring large volumes of water and resulting in deposition of mercury into Wamsait River and Kayeli Bay. Total mercury in waste ponds was over 680 mg/kg. In sediments at the mouth of the local river and a small feeder creek >3.00 mg/kg and >7.66 mg/kg respectively. River and bay sediments were proportionately higher in available mercury than elemental mercury and more strongly bound mercuric sulfide compared to that in trommel waste. This preliminary investigation raises concerns about the long term distribution and speciation of mercury. The floodplain is an important agricultural resource, and Mollucas Province is recognised nationally as the centre for Indonesian fish stocks. Challenges for management include communicating the potential future risks to the community and leaders and identifying mechanisms to reduce mercury waste.  相似文献

The annual and life-cycle mercury bioaccumulation pattern in selected tissues of the economically relevant Elasmobranchii species Scyliorhinus canicula was studied, and the risks associated with its consumption evaluated.Preferential mercury bioaccumulation occurred in muscle tissue, and followed the order muscle > heart > liver > gills > pancreas. Total mercury in muscle tissue ranged from 0.13 mg kg−1 (wwt) in 1+ year old males to 0.8 mg kg−1 (wwt) in 8+ year old mature females, with no significant differences found between genders, and no clear lifespan bioaccumulation pattern observed, except for mature females. Organic mercury in the muscle ranged from 0.05 mg kg−1 (wwt) to 0.52 mg kg−1 (wwt), corresponding to an average of 70% of total mercury content. In mature females, a significant correlation (R = 0.99, P = 0.01) was found between size and organic mercury fraction, suggesting reproduction as an important factor controlling organic mercury bioaccumulation in the spotted dogfish.  相似文献

Leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) have low hatching and emergence success compared to other sea turtle species. Postmortem examinations of hatchlings showed degeneration of heart and skeletal muscle that was similar to that found in other neonates with selenium deficient mothers. Selenium deficiency can result from elevated concentrations of bodily mercury. Ingested mercury is detoxified by the liver through mercury-selenium compound formation. In animals persistently exposed to mercury, the liver’s ability to detoxify this element may decrease, especially if dietary selenium is insufficient. We measured mercury and selenium concentrations in nesting female leatherbacks and their hatchlings from Florida and compared the levels to hatching and emergence success. Both liver selenium and the liver selenium-to-mercury ratio positively correlated with leatherback hatching and emergence success. This study provides the first evidence for the roles of mercury and selenium in explaining low reproductive success in a globally imperiled species, the leatherback sea turtle.  相似文献
