A comparative study of simulated air shower longitudinal profiles is presented. An appropriate thinning level for the calculations is first determined empirically. High statistics results are then provided, over a wide energy range (1014.0–1020.5 eV), for proton and iron primaries, using four combinations of the and program frameworks, and the SIBYLL and QGSjet high energy hadronic interaction models. These results are compared to existing experimental data. The way in which the first interaction controls Xmax is investigated, as is the distribution of Xmax.  相似文献

We investigate the problem of transition from galactic cosmic rays to extragalactic ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Using the model for extragalactic ultra-high energy cosmic rays and observed all-particle cosmic ray spectrum, we calculate the galactic spectrum of iron nuclei in the energy range 108–109 GeV. The flux and spectrum predicted at lower energies agree well with the KASCADE data. The transition from galactic to extragalactic cosmic rays is distinctly seen in spectra of protons and iron nuclei, when they are measured separately. The shape of the predicted iron spectrum agrees with the Hall diffusion.  相似文献

The evolution of the cosmic ray primary composition in the energy range 106–107 GeV (i.e. the “knee” region) is studied by means of the e.m. and muon data of the Extensive Air Shower EAS-TOP array (Campo Imperatore, National Gran Sasso Laboratories). The measurement is performed through: (a) the correlated muon number (Nμ) and shower size (Ne) spectra, and (b) the evolution of the average muon numbers and their distributions as a function of the shower size. From analysis (a) the dominance of helium primaries at the knee, and therefore the possibility that the knee itself is due to a break in their energy spectrum (at EkHe=(3.5±0.3)×106 GeV) are deduced. Concerning analysis (b), the measurement accuracies allow the classification in terms of three mass groups: light (p,He), intermediate (CNO), and heavy (Fe). At primary energies E0≈106 GeV the results are consistent with the extrapolations of the data from direct experiments. In the knee region the obtained evolution of the energy spectra leads to: (i) an average steep spectrum of the light mass group (γp,He>3.1), (ii) a spectrum of the intermediate mass group harder than the one of the light component (γCNO2.75, possibly bending at EkCNO≈(6–7)×106 GeV), (iii) a constant slope for the spectrum of the heavy primaries (γFe2.3–2.7) consistent with the direct measurements. In the investigated energy range, the average primary mass increases from lnA=1.6–1.9 at E01.5×106 GeV to lnA=2.8–3.1 at E01.5×107 GeV. The result supports the standard acceleration and propagation models of galactic cosmic rays that predict rigidity dependent cut-offs for the primary spectra of the different nuclei. The uncertainties connected to the hadronic interaction model (QGSJET in CORSIKA) used for the interpretation are discussed.  相似文献

An interpretation of Akeno giant air shower array (AGASA) data by comparing the experimental results with the simulated ones by cosmic ray simulation for KASCADE (CORSIKA) has been made. General features of the electromagnetic component and low energy muons observed by AGASA can be well reproduced by CORSIKA. The form of the lateral distribution of charged particles agrees well with the experimental one between a few hundred metres and 2000 m from the core, irrespective of the hadronic interaction model studied and the primary composition (proton or iron). It does not depend on the primary energy between 1017.5 and 1020 eV as the experiment shows. If we evaluate the particle density measured by scintillators of 5 cm thickness at 600 m from the core S0(600), suffix 0 denotes the vertically incident shower) by taking into account the similar conditions as in the experiment, the conversion relation from S0(600) to the primary energy is expressed as E (eV)=2.15×1017S0(600)1.015 within 10% uncertainty among the models and composition used, which suggests the present AGASA conversion factor is the lower limit. Although the form of the muon lateral distribution fits well to the experiment within 1000 m from the core, the absolute values change with hadronic interaction model and primary composition. The slope of the ρμ(600) (muon density above 1 GeV at 600 m from the core) vs. S0(600) relation in experiment is flatter than that in simulation of any hadronic model and primary composition. As the experimental slope is constant from 1015 to 1019 eV, we need to study this relation in a wide primary energy range to infer the rate of change of chemical composition with energy.  相似文献

Linsley used the Volcano Ranch array to collect data on the lateral distribution of showers produced by cosmic rays at energies above 1017 eV. Very precise measurements of the steepness of the lateral distribution function were made on 366 events. The current availability of sophisticated hadronic interaction models has prompted an interpretation of the measurements. In this analysis we use the Monte Carlo code to generate showers, together with to simulate the detector response to ground particles. The results show that, with the assumption of a bi-modal proton and iron mix, iron is the dominant component of cosmic rays near 1018 eV, assuming that hadronic interactions are well-described by at this energy range. The Volcano Ranch data set, as available to us, does not allow a straightforward assignment of energy for each event. It is thus not possible to give the energy dependence of the mass composition.  相似文献

The GU miniarray is a ultra high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) detector consisting of eight plastic scintillators of carpet area 2 m2, each viewed by fast PMTs. It is used to detect Giant EAS by the method of time spread measurement of secondary particles produced in the atmosphere. The energies of the air showers have been reestimated using CORSIKA program. As in the original analysis the Cosmic Ray energy was determined via its relation to the ground level parameter Ns, the shower size. This relation was obtained previously through a best fit relation in agreement with QGS model and Yakutsk data. In this work we use CORSIKA code with QGSJET model of high energy hadronic interactions to simulate miniarray data leading to a modified relation between primary energy and shower size. A revised energy spectrum is reported for 1017–1019 eV primary energy.  相似文献

Recent noble gas data of mantle-derived samples show that there are two end members: PLUME-type and MORB-type. The estimated high 3He and 22Ne abundances of the PLUME source, possibly representing the lower mantle, should reflect the remnant of dissolved solar-type atmosphere. Calculations of the structure of the primary atmosphere and the noble gas dissolution into the magma ocean of the accreting planet suggest that the high 3He and 22Ne abundances can be explained if the primary atmosphere persisted until M0.4–0.6 ME (ME being the present Earth mass). The PLUME source has higher 3He/4He and lower 21Ne/22Ne than the MORB source. This is explained by assuming that the lower mantle was less degassed during magma ocean cooling. The carbon abundance in the mantle can be constrained from the estimated abundance of mantle 3He and C/3He data of the present mantle-derived samples. Dissolved solar-type noble gas might explain high noble gas abundance in the present Venus, if the primary atmosphere persisted until the final stage of accretion under lower dust opacity of the atmosphere.  相似文献

Based on the theory of the radio evolution of supernova remnants and the theory of x-ray emission, we have derived an expression for the energy of supernova eruption directly in terms of the observed radio flux density and x-ray luminosity. This method is used to estimate the energy of the supernova explosions in LMC and SMC. Our calculated values fall in the range 1049 – 1051 ergs, with the values for Type I supernovae systematically smaller than those for Type II, at about 1049 ergs. We point out that the most likely cause for the discrepancy between the statistical and theoretical N-D relations is incompletness of data. We also point out, in the two clouds, the vast majority of large sources are still in the phase of adiabatic expansion.  相似文献

We have done extensive Monte Carlo simulations using the new simulation codes of CORSIKA and COSMOS to compare with the gamma-family data obtained at Mts. Fuji (3750 m above sea level) and Kanbala (5500 m above sea level). Then, we estimated the primary proton and helium spectra around the knee energy region using a multiple-layered feed-forward neural network as a classifier of primary particle kind. The selection efficiency of proton-induced family events is estimated to be 82%. The flux value of protons at 2×1015 eV is (5.5±1.5)×10−14 (m−2 s−1 sr−1 GeV−1). The result suggests heavy-enriched primary composition around the knee region.  相似文献

The energy spectrum of cosmic rays with primary energies between 1014 eV and 1016 eV has been studied with the CASA-MIA air shower array. The measured differential energy spectrum is a power law (dj/dEEy) with spectral indices γ of 2.66±0.02 below approximately 1015 eV and 3.00±0.05 above. A new method is used for measuring primary energy derived from ground-based data in a compositionally insensitive way. In contrast with some previous reports, the “knee” of the energy spectrum does not appear sharp, but rather a smooth transition over energies from 1015 eV to 3.0 × 1015 eV.  相似文献

The attenuation of the electron shower size beyond the shower maximum is studied with the KASCADE extensive air shower (EAS) experiment in the primary energy range of about 1014–1016 eV. Attenuation and absorption lengths are determined by applying different approaches, including the method of constant intensity, the decrease of the flux of EASs with increasing zenith angle, and its variation with ground pressure. We observe a significant dependence of the results on the applied method. The determined values of the attenuation length ranges from 175 to 196 g/cm2 and of the absorption length from 100 to 120 g/cm2. The origin of these differences is discussed emphasizing the influence of intrinsic shower fluctuations.  相似文献

We present results from the initial flight of our Balloon Air CHerenkov (BACH) payload. BACH detects air Cherenkov radiation from cosmic ray nuclei as coincident flashes in two optical modules. The flight (dubbed PDQ–BACH) took place on April 22, 1998 from Ft. Sumner, New Mexico. During an exposure of 2.75 h, with a typical threshold energy for iron nuclei of 2.2×1013 eV, we observed several events cleanly identifiable as iron group nuclei. Analysis of the data yields a new flux measurement that is fully consistent with that reported by other investigations.  相似文献

The expected proton and neutrino fluxes from decays of massive metastable relic particles are calculated using the HERWIG QCD event generator. The predicted proton spectrum can account for the observed flux of extremely high energy cosmic rays beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff, for a decaying particle mass of (1012) GeV. The lifetime required is of (1020) yr if such particles constitute all of the dark matter (with a proportionally shorter lifetime for a smaller contribution). Such values are plausible if the metastable particles are hadron-like bound states from the hidden sector of supersymmetry breaking which decay through nonrenormalizable interactions. The expected ratio of the proton to neutrino flux is given as a diagonistic of the decaying particle model for the forthcoming Pierre Auger Project.  相似文献

We compute the big bang nucleosynthesis limit on the number of light neutrino degrees of freedom in a model-independent likelihood analysis based on the abundances of 4He and 7Li. We use the two-dimensional likelihood functions to simultaneously constrain the baryon-to-photon ratio and the number of light neutrinos for a range of 4He abundances Yp = 0.225–0.250, as well as a range in primordial 7Li abundances from (1.6 to 4.1) ×10−10. For (7Li/H)p = 1.6 × 10−10, as can be inferred from the 7Li data from Population II halo stars, the upper limit to Nν based on the current best estimate of the primordial 4He abundance of Yp = 0.238 is Nν < 4.3 and varies from Nν < 3.3 (at 95% C.L.) when Yp = 0.225 to Nν < 5.3 when Yp = 0.250. If 7Li is depleted in these stars the upper limit to Nν is relaxed. Taking (7Li/H)p = 4.1 × 10−10, the limit varies from Nν < 3.9 when Yp = 0.225 to Nν 6 when Yp = 0.250. We also consider the consequences on the upper limit to Nν if recent observations of deuterium in high-redshift quasar absorption-line systems are confirmed.  相似文献

The MSX infrared dark cloud G79.2+0.38 has been observed over a 11′×′ region simultaneously in the J=1-0 rotational transition lines of the 12CO and its isotopic molecules 13CO and 18CO. The dense molecular cores defined by the C18O line are found to be associated with the two high-extinction patches shown in the MSX A-band image. The two dense cores have the column density N (H2) (5 – 12) × 1022 cm−2 and the mean number density n (3 ± 1) × 104 cm−3. Their sizes are 1.7 and 1.2 pc in 13CO(1-0) line, 1.2 and 0.6 pc in C18O(1-0) line, respectively. The masses of these cloud cores are estimated to be in the range from 2 × 102 to 2 × 103 M. The profile of radial mean density of the cloud core can be described by the exponential function ¯n(p) p−0.34±0.02. Compared with the cases of typical optical dark clouds, the abundances of the CO isotopic molecules 13CO and C18O in this MSX infrared dark cloud appear to be depleted by a factor of 4–11, but at present there is no evidence for any obvious variation of the relative abundance ratio X13/18 between 13CO and C18O with the column density.  相似文献

Ground-based arrays of imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes have emerged as the most sensitive γ-ray detectors in the energy range of about 100 GeV and above. The strengths of these arrays are a very large effective collection area on the order of 105 m2, combined with excellent single photon angular and energy resolutions. The sensitivity of such detectors is limited by statistical fluctuations in the number of Cosmic-ray initiated air showers that resemble γ-ray air showers in many ways. In this paper, we study the performance of simple event reconstruction methods when applied to simulated data of the Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) experiment. We review methods for reconstructing the arrival direction and the energy of the primary photons, and examine means to improve on their performance. For a software threshold energy of 300 GeV (100 GeV), the methods achieve point source angular and energy resolutions of σ63% = 0.1° (0.2°) and σ68% = 15% (22%), respectively. The main emphasis of the paper is the discussion of γ–hadron separation methods for the VERITAS experiment. We find that the information from several methods can be combined based on a likelihood ratio approach and the resulting algorithm achieves a γ–hadron suppression with a quality factor that is substantially higher than that achieved with the standard methods used so far.  相似文献

We have developed antibodies and a multi-array competitive immunoassay (MACIA) for the detection of a wide range of molecular size compounds, from single aromatic ring derivatives or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), through small peptides, proteins or whole cells (spores). Multiple microarrays containing target molecules are used simultaneously to run several competitive immunoassays. The sensitivity of the MACIA for small organic compounds like naphthalene, 4-phenilphenol or 4-tertbutilphenol is in the range of 100–500 ppb (ng ml−1), for others like the insecticide terbutryn it is at the ppt (ng l−1) level, while for small peptides, as well as for more complex molecules like the protein thioredoxin, the sensitivity is approximately 1–2 ppb, or 104–105 spores of Bacillus subtilis per milliliter. For organic compounds, a water–methanol solution was used in order to achieve a better dissolution of the organics without compromising the antibody–antigen interaction. The above-mentioned compounds were detected by MACIA in water–(10%) methanol extracts from spiked pyrite and hematite-containing rock powder samples, as well as from a spiked-sand sample subjected to organic extraction with dichloromethane–methanol (1/1).  相似文献

Data taken with ten Cosmic Ray Tracking (CRT) detectors and the HEGRA air-shower array on La Palma, Canary Islands, have been analysed to investigate changes of the cosmic ay mass composition at the ‘knee’ of the cosmic-ray flux spectrum near 1015 eV energy. The analysis is based on the angular distributions of particles in air showers. HEGRA data provided the shower size, direction, and core position and CRT data the particle track information. It is shown that the angular distribution of muons in air showers is sensitive to the composition over a wide range of shower sizes and, thus, primary cosmic-ray energies with little systematic uncertainties. Results can be easily expressed in terms of ln A of primary cosmic rays. In the lower part of the energy range covered, we have considerable overlap with direct composition measurements by the JACEE collaboration and find compatible results in the observed rise of ln A. Above about 1015 eV energy we find no or at most a slow further rise of ln A. Simple cosmic-ray composition models are presented which are fully consistent with our results as well as the JACEE flux and composition measurements and the flux measurements of the Tibet ASγ collaboration. Minimal three-parameter composition models defined by the same power-law slope of all elements below the knee and a common change in slope at a fixed rigidity are inconsistent with these data.  相似文献

The photo-coulomb neutrino process has been considered in the electro-weak theory and the influence of this process to the evolution of stars has been outlined. The scattering cross-section of this process is calculated in both low and high energy limit. The neutrino mass has been taken into account in this calculation. In the low-energy limit the neutrino luminosity is computed in the temperature range 108–109 K and is also compared to the previous result obtained according to the current-current coupling theory. The process may be significant for the evolution of stars in the later phases.  相似文献

First generation stars are the oldest stars that were formed in post-big bang, primitive gas, containing no elements heavier than carbon, with ages greater than 14 Gyr and having undergone no evolution so far. Observations over a long time have confirmed that, up to now, no stars with zero metallicity ([Fe/H]) or with [Fe/H]≤ −6 have been found in the Galaxy. To explain this absence, we shall make a theoretical calculation of the probability of detecting first generation stars using Tsuiimoto et al.'s model of chemical evolution of the galactic halo and assuming an initial mass function of the Miller-Scalo form. We use all the observational data on the halo stars to constrain the parameters. Our result is that, if the mass of the cloud that formed the stars is 106–107 M, then the probability of detecting first generation stars is 6.14×10−4–6.14×10−5.  相似文献
