We performed ion irradiation of mineral samples with 50 keV He+, aimed to investigate ion irradiation effects on diagnostic spectral features. Reflectance spectra of samples in 0.375–2.5 μm are measured before and after ion irradiation. Silicates, including Luobusha olivine, plagioclase and basaltic glass, have shown reddening and darkening of reflectance spectra at the VIS–NIR range. Olivine is more sensitive to ion irradiation than plagioclase and basaltic glass. Irradiated Panzhihua ilmenite exhibits higher reflectance and stronger absorption features, which is totally different from lunar soil and analog silicate materials in other experiments. Using continuum removal and MGM fit, we extracted and compared absorption features of olivine spectra before and after irradiation. Ion irradiation can induce band strength decrease of olivine but negligible band centers shift. We estimate band centers shift caused by ion irradiation are quite limited, even less than variations due to chemical composition in silicates. It provides one possible explanation for no systematic shift in band positions in lunar soil. Irradiated Luobusha olivine spectrum matches spectra of olivine-dominated asteroids. Our results suggest space weathering should be new clues to explain the subtle difference between A-type asteroid spectra and laboratory spectra of olivine.  相似文献

Hydrous alteration of olivine macrocrysts in a Martian olivine phyric basalt, NWA 10416, and a terrestrial basalt from southern Colorado are examined using SEM, EPMA, TEM, and µXRD techniques. The olivines in the meteorite contain linear nanotubes of hydrous material, amorphous areas, and fluid dissolution textures quite distinct from alteration identified in other Martian meteorites. Instead, they bear resemblance to terrestrial deuteric alteration features. The presence of the hydrous alteration phase Mg‐laihunite within the olivines has been confirmed by µXRD analysis. The cores of the olivines in both Martian and terrestrial samples are overgrown by unaltered rims whose compositions match those of a separate population of groundmass olivines, suggesting that the core olivines are xenocrysts whose alteration preceded crystallization of the groundmass. The terrestrial sample is linked to deep crustal metasomatism and the “ignimbrite flare‐up” of the Oligocene epoch. The comparison of the two samples suggests the existence of an analogous relatively water‐rich magmatic reservoir on Mars.  相似文献

Reflectance Spectral Characteristics of Lunar Surface Materials   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Based on a comprehensive analysis of the mineral composition of major lunar rocks (highland anorthosite, lunar mare basalt and KREEP rock), we investigate the reflectance spectral characteristics of the lunar rock-forming minerals, including feldspar, pyroxene and olivine. The affecting factors, the variation of the intensity of solar radiation with wavelength and the reflectance spectra of the lunar rocks are studied. We also calculate the reflectivity of lunar mare basalt and highland anorthosite at 300 nm, 415 nm, 750 nm, 900 nm, 950 nm and 1000 nm. It is considered that the difference in composition between lunar mare basalt and highland anorthosite is so large that separate analyses are needed in the study of the reflectivity of lunar surface materials in the two regions covered by mare basalt and highland anorthosite, and especially in the region with high Th contents, which may be the KREEP-distributed region.  相似文献

The absorption features of olivine in visible and near-infrared(VNIR) reflectance spectra are the key spectral parameters in its mineralogical studies. Generally, these spectral parameters can be obtained by exploiting the Modified Gaussian Model(MGM) with a proper continuum removal. However, different continua may change the deconvolution results of these parameters. This paper investigates the diagnostic spectral features of olivine with diverse chemical compositions. Four different continuum removal methods with MGM for getting the deconvolution results are presented and the regression equations for predicting the Mg-number(Fo#) are introduced. The results show that different continua superimposed on the mineral absorption features will make the absorption center shift, as well as the obvious alterations in shape, width and strength of the absorption band. Additionally, it is also found that the logarithm of a second-order polynomial continuum can match the overall shape of the spectrum in logarithmic space, and the improved regression equations applied to estimate the chemical composition of olivine-dominated spectra also have a better performance. As an application example, the improved approach is applied to pulse laser irradiated olivine grains to simulate and study the space weathering effects on olivine diagnostic spectral features. The experiments confirm that space weathering can make the absorption band center shift toward longer wavelength. Therefore, the Fo# estimated from remote sensing spectra may be less than its actual chemical composition. These results may provide valuable information for revealing the difference between the spectra of olivine grains and olivine-dominated asteroids.  相似文献

Abstract– Low‐iron, manganese‐enriched (LIME) olivine grains are found in cometary samples returned by the Stardust mission from comet 81P/Wild 2. Similar grains are found in primitive meteoritic clasts and unequilibrated meteorite matrix. LIME olivine is thermodynamically stable in a vapor of solar composition at high temperature at total pressures of a millibar to a microbar, but enrichment of solar composition vapor in a dust of chondritic composition causes the FeO/MnO ratio of olivine to increase. The compositions of LIME olivines in primitive materials indicate oxygen fugacities close to those of a very reducing vapor of solar composition. The compositional zoning of LIME olivines in amoeboid olivine aggregates is consistent with equilibration with nebular vapor in the stability field of olivine, without re‐equilibration at lower temperatures. A similar history is likely for LIME olivines found in comet samples and in interplanetary dust particles. LIME olivine is not likely to persist in nebular conditions in which silicate liquids are stable.  相似文献

Abstract— Based on recent progress in simulating space weathering on asteroids using pulse‐laser irradiation onto olivine and orthopyroxene samples, detailed analyses of two of the A and R type asteroid reflectance spectra have been performed using reflectance spectra of laser‐treated samples. The visible‐near‐infrared spectrum of olivine is more altered than that of pyroxene at the same pulse‐laser energy, suggesting that olivine weathers more rapidly than orthopyroxene in space. The same trend can be detected from reflectance spectra of the asteroids, where the more olivine an asteroid has, the redder its 1 μm band continuum can become. Comparison of the 1 μm band continuum slope and the 2/1 μm band area ratio between the asteroids and olivine and pyroxene samples (including the laser‐treated ones) suggests that asteroids may be limited in the degree of space weathering they can exhibit, possibly due to the short life of their surface regolith. Their pyroxenes may also have a limited chemical composition range. Fitting the visible continuum shape and other parts of the spectra (especially the 2μm part) has been impossible with any combination of common rock‐forming minerals such as silicates and metallic irons. However, this study shows, for the first time, excellent fits of reflectance spectra of an A asteroid (Aeternitas) and an R asteroid (Dembowska), including their visible spectral curves, band depths and shapes, and overall continuum shapes. Our results provide estimates that Aeternitas consists of 2% fresh olivine, 93% space‐weathered olivine, 1% space‐weathered orthopyroxene, and 4% chromite, and that Dembowska consists of 1% fresh olivine, 55% space‐weathered olivine, and 44% space‐weathered orthopyroxene. These results suggest that space weathering effects maybe important to the interpretation of asteroid reflectance spectra, even those with deep silicate absorption bands. Modified Gaussian model deconvolutions of the laser‐irradiated olivine samples show that their identity as olivine remained. The most recent submicroscopic mineralogical analyses have revealed that the laser‐irradiated olivine samples contain nanophase iron particles similar to those in space‐weathered lunar samples.  相似文献

The near-IR spectral properties of minerals, meteorites, and lunar soil vary with temperature. The manner in which these materials vary is diagnostic of aspects of their composition. We quantify the spectral dependence on temperature by reporting the change in relative reflectance with temperature as a function of wavelength. We call this quantity, ΔRT (in units of K−1), as a function of temperature the “thermo-reflectance spectrum.” The thermo-reflectance spectra of olivine and pyroxene are distinct, and most of the observable structure in thermo-reflectance spectra of the ordinary and carbonaceous chondrites can be understood in terms of a mixture of the thermo-reflectance spectra of olivine and pyroxene. The magnitude of thermo-reflectance spectra of meteorites and lunar soils is much less than that of pure minerals. Lunar soils are particularly subdued. While conventional analysis of remotely obtained spectra of the Moon can neglect temperature effects, spatially resolved measurements of the surface of the asteroid Vesta will likely have a strong temperature-dependent component based on measurements of a eucrite and a howardite.  相似文献

We model the reflectance spectra of SI–SVII-subtype asteroids. The spectra of minor planets contain little information as regards the abundance of free metal and the form of its existence on the asteroid surfaces. We investigate the properties of a set of probable spectra for the surface pyroxene and olivine of minor planets. Clinopyroxene with high calcium and iron contents and orthopyroxene with a ferrosilite molecular content of about 40% are typical of the S-type asteroids. The subtype number of S-type asteroids can be correlated with the bulk pyroxene composition. The forsterite molecular content in asteroid olivine lies within the probable range 40–74%. The prevalence of pyroxene over olivine and feldspar in the computed compositions of S-type asteroids suggests the probable presence of basalts on their surfaces.  相似文献

Lunar highland region and associated craters are mostly composed of anorthosite. In the present study, we studied the reflectance spectra of terrestrial anorthosites collected from Sittampundi Anorthosites Complex, which is considered as equivalent (simulant) of lunar highland anorthosites. The objective of the study is to interpret diagnostic spectral features of analog anorthosite for remotely exploring lunar highland region. Reflectance spectra of anorthosites were measured under two different environments, such as controlled field and laboratory conditions. In these two procedures, the laboratory spectra give clear, diagnostic spectral information in the present study. Reflectance spectra captured under 350-2500 nm covering UV, Visible, NIR, and SWIR part of the electromagnetic spectrum. The spectral characteristics of anorthosites measured under various parts of electromagnetic spectrum have diagnostic absorption features at 380-387, 700-740, 930-1100, 1160-1200, 1415, 1920, 2200 and 2330 nm correspondingly due to plagioclase UV absorption, Fe3+ electron transition absorption, Fe2+ pyroxene and olivine absorption, OH/Mn3+ crystal transition absorption, pyroxene absorption, Al-OH absorption and Mg-OH absorption. Mineralogical and chemical analyses were carried out for four anorthosites and compared with the results of chemical component of lunar anorthosite. The percentage of plagioclase content, relative abundance of low and high calcium pyroxene and olivine in different anorthosite samples are correlated with the albedo range, absorption shape, absorption centers and band depth. The similarity in the diagnostic spectral features of the anolog anorthosite with lunar anorthosites could be effectively utilized for remotely mapping the lunar highland region.  相似文献

Abstract— In order to explore the origin of chondrules and the chondrites, the O isotopic compositions of nine olivine grains in seven chondrules from the primitive Semarkona LL3.0 chondrite have been determined by ion microprobe. The data plot in the same general region of the three-isotope plot as whole-chondrule samples from ordinary chondrites previously measured by other techniques. There are no significant differences between the O isotopic properties of olivine in the various chondrule groups in the present study, but there is a slight indication that the data plot at the 16O-rich end of the ordinary chondrite field. This might suggest that the mesostasis contains isotopically heavy O. The olivines in the present study have O isotopic compositions unlike the 16O-rich olivine grains from the Julesburg ordinary chondrite. Even though olivines in group A chondrules have several properties in common with them, the 16O-rich Julesburg olivines previously reported are not simply olivines from group A chondrules.  相似文献

Abstract— Major element and sulfur concentrations have been determined in experimentally heated olivine‐hosted melt inclusions from a suite of Apollo 12 picritic basalts (samples 12009, 12075, 12020, 12018, 12040, 12035). These lunar basalts are likely to be genetically related by olivine accumulation (Walker et al. 1976a, b). Our results show that major element compositions of melt inclusions from samples 12009, 12075, and 12020 follow model crystallization trends from a parental liquid similar in composition to whole rock sample 12009, thereby partially confirming the olivine accumulation hypothesis. In contrast, the compositions of melt inclusions from samples 12018, 12040, and 12035 fall away from model crystallization trends, suggesting that these samples crystallized from melts compositionally distinct from the 12009 parent liquid and therefore may not be strictly cogenetic with other members of the Apollo 12 picritic basalt suite. Sulfur concentrations in melt inclusions hosted in early crystallized olivine (Fo75) are consistent with a primary magmatic composition of 1050 ppm S, or about a factor of 2 greater than whole rock compositions with 400–600 ppm S. The Apollo 12 picritic basalt parental magma apparently experienced outgassing and loss of S during transport and eruption on the lunar surface. Even with the higher estimates of primary magmatic sulfur concentrations provided by the melt inclusions, the Apollo 12 picritic basalt magmas would have been undersaturated in sulfide in their mantle source regions and capable of transporting chalcophile elements from the lunar mantle to the surface. Therefore, the measured low concentration of chalcophile elements (e.g., Cu, Au, PGEs) in these lavas must be a primary feature of the lunar mantle and is not related to residual sulfide remaining in the mantle during melting. We estimate the sulfur concentration of the Apollo 12 mare basalt source regions to be ~75 ppm, which is significantly lower than that of the terrestrial mantle.  相似文献

We present new optical (0.4-0.65 μm) spectra of Mercury and lunar pure anorthosite locations, obtained quasi-simultaneously with the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) in 2002. A comparative study is performed with the model of Lucey et al. (2000, J. Geophys. Res. 105, 20297-20305, and references therein) between iron-poor, mature, pure anorthosite (>90% plagioclase feldspar) Clementine spectra from the lunar farside and a combined 0.4-1.0 μm mercurian spectrum, obtained with the NOT, calculated for standard photometric geometry. Mercury is located at more extreme locations in the Lucey ratio-reflectance diagrams than any known lunar soil, specifically with respect to the extremely iron-poor mature anorthosites. Though quantitative prediction of FeO and TiO2 abundances cannot be made without a more generally applicable model, we find qualitatively that the abundances of both these oxides must be near zero for Mercury. We utilize the theory of Hapke (2002, Icarus 157, 523-534, and references therein), with realistic photometric parameters, to model laboratory spectra of matured mineral powders and lunar soils, and remotely sensed spectra of lunar anorthosites and Mercury. An important difference between fabricated and natural powders is the high value for the internal scattering parameter necessary to interpret the spectra for the former, and the requirement of rough and non-isotropically scattering surfaces in the modelling of the latter. The mature lunar anorthosite spectra were well modelled with binary mixtures of calcic feldspars and olivines, grain sizes of 25-30 μm and a concentration of submicroscopic metallic iron (SMFe) of 0.12-0.15% in grain coatings. The mercurian spectrum is not possible to interpret from terrestrial mineral powder spectra without introducing an average particle scattering function for the bulk soil that increases in backscattering efficiency with wavelength. The observed spectrum is somewhat better predicted with binary mixture models of feldspars and pyroxenes, than with single-component regoliths consisting of either albite or diopside. Correct spectral reflectance values were predicted with a concentration of 0.1 wt% SMFe in coatings of 15-30 μm sized grains. Since reasonable cosmogonical formation scenarios for Mercury, or meteoritic infall, predict iron concentrations at least this high, we draw the conclusion that the average grain size of Mercury is about a factor of two smaller than for average returned lunar soil samples. The 0.6-2.5 μm spectrum of McCord and Clark (1979, J. Geophys. Res. 178, 745-747) is used to further limit the possible range of mineralogical composition of Mercury. It is found that an intimately mixed and matured 3:1 labradorite-to-enstatite regolith composition best matches both the optical and near-infrared spectra, yielding an abundance of ∼1.2 wt% FeO and ∼0 wt% TiO2.  相似文献

Abstract— Olivine grains from selected meteorites (the Springwater pallasite, the Lowicz mesosiderite, the ALH 84025 brachinite, the Krymka LL3 chondrite, and the Calcalong Creek lunar meteorite) and terrestrial rocks (San Carlos forsterite and Rockport fayalite) were studied by optical microscopy and high-precision electron microprobe analysis. Detailed microprobe traverses revealed regular igneous zoning in the Krymka and Calcalong Creek olivines. Traverses across the San Carlos forsterite grain are flat and display no chemical variations larger than the 2σ range of counting error (±0.2 mol% Fa). Traverses across olivine grains in the ALH 84025, Lowicz, and Springwater meteorites show regular patterns of periodic or wavy chemical variations well exceeding the 2σ uncertainty range. However, no lamellar structure was seen in backscattered electron images. It is suggested that the periodic chemical variations may be due to spinodal decomposition of primary, more or less homogeneous grains. I conclude that the absence of earlier reports of such variations simply means that olivine grains in equilibrated meteorites have not been examined closely enough to detect them.  相似文献

Olivine‐phyric shergottites represent primitive basaltic to picritic rocks, spanning a large range of Mg# and olivine abundances. As primitive olivine‐bearing magmas are commonly representative of their mantle source on Earth, understanding the petrology and evolution of olivine‐phyric shergottites is critical in our understanding of Martian mantle compositions. We present data for the olivine‐phyric shergottite Northwest Africa (NWA) 10170 to constrain the petrology with specific implications for magma plumbing‐system dynamics. The calculated oxygen fugacity and bulk‐rock REE concentrations (based on modal abundance) are consistent with a geochemically intermediate classification for NWA 10170, and overall similarity with NWA 6234. In addition, we present trace element data using laser ablation ICP‐MS for coarse‐grained olivine cores, and compare these data with terrestrial and Martian data sets. The olivines in NWA 10170 contain cores with compositions of Fo77 that evolve to rims with composition of Fo58, and are characterized by cores with low Ni contents (400–600 ppm). Nickel is compatible in olivine and such low Ni content for olivine cores in NWA 10170 suggests either early‐stage fractionation and loss of olivine from the magma in a staging chamber at depth, or that Martian magmas have lower Ni than terrestrial magmas. We suggest that both are true in this case. Therefore, the magma does not represent a primary mantle melt, but rather has undergone 10–15% fractionation in a staging chamber prior to extrusion/intrusion at the surface of Mars. This further implies that careful evaluation of not only the Mg# but also the trace element concentrations of olivine needs to be conducted to evaluate pristine mantle melts versus those that have fractionated olivine (±pyroxene and oxide minerals) in staging chambers.  相似文献

The spectral reflectance (0.32–1.06 μm) of Mercury was measured during two elongations, September–October 1974 and March 1975. The spectra are much improved over the previously available measurements. The reflectance increases almost linearly with wavelength and no electronic transition absorption bands are evident to the precision of the data. The new spectra agree very well with the reflectance of mature lunar mare and upland soils and are dissimilar to those of any other observed solar system object. This suggests that the surface materials and the weathering processes controlling their optical properties are similar for both the Moon and Mercury. Differences between the spectra for the two observation periods may indicate differences in the average composition for the different regions of Mercury observed.  相似文献

An automatic procedure has been implemented on the original MGM approach (Sunshine et al., 1990) in order to deal with an a priori unknown mafic mineralogy observed in the visible-near infrared by reflectance spectroscopy in the case of laboratory or natural rock spectra. We consider all the mixture possibilities involving orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and olivine, and use accordingly for each configuration different numbers of Gaussians, depending on the potential complexity of the mixture. A key issue is to initialize the MGM procedure with a proper setting for the Gaussians parameters. An automatic analysis of the shape of the spectrum is first performed. The continuum is handled with a second order polynomial adjusted on the local maxima along the spectrum and Gaussians parameters initial settings are made on the basis of laboratory results available in the literature in the case of simple mixtures of mafic minerals. The returned MGM solutions are then assessed on spectroscopic grounds and either validated or discarded, on the basis of a mineralogical sorting. The results presented in this paper are a first quantitative step to characterize both modal and chemical compositions of pyroxenes and olivines. A demonstration of the methodology on specific examples of binary and ternary olivine-pyroxenes mixtures has been made, which shows that the different non-linear effects which affect the Gaussian parameters (center and strength) can be successfully handled. Of note is the fact that the band center positions associated with the different mafic minerals are not set here in the inverse problem, and thus the MGM outputs are truly informative of the chemical composition of pyroxenes and olivines. With the consideration of some limits on the detection thresholds, these results are quite promising for increasing the operational use of the Modified Gaussian Model with large hyperspectral data sets in view of establishing detailed mineralogical mappings of magmatic units.  相似文献

In spectroscopic remote sensing for the exploration of the surface compositions of Earth and terrestrial planets, reflectance spectra with very low spectral contrast and even devoid of diagnostic absorption bands can be observed, which make the interpretation of the component minerals ambiguous. Using selected examples of terrestrial rock samples from intrusive and effusive geologic systems, we discuss compositional and textural properties related to these particular spectral shapes. We show that: (1) this spectral behaviour is common for coarse grains of multimineral rocks, where the optical coupling is expected to occur between welded mineral particles; (2) it is emphasised by the presence of opaque minerals with various compositions, such as ulvospinel, magnetite and chromite in effusive rock groundmass and in intrusive rocks; (3) it is controlled by the number of silicate phases within which the FeO is distributed, irrespective of the total iron content in the rock: a rock composition with a high number of iron-bearing minerals producing this kind of low contrast, almost featureless spectra is indicated here as “critical mode”; (4) it is also strongly intensified by aqueous alteration of silicates. These observations suggest unpredictable combinations of several different petrographic variables affecting the spectra of some compact rocks, and stimulate both targeted studies to quantitatively relate spectral and petrographic parameters, and the development of appropriate methods of spectral decomposition. Our ongoing work is at present focused on the spectroscopic effects of the FeO concentration in transparent neutral plagioclase, the different compositions of the opaque neutral minerals, and the iron bearing amorphous phases. We also discuss the analogy between the rocks used in the analysis reported here and the crustal rock compositions observed on Mars and inferred for Mercury as well as the compatibility of the factors responsible for the low spectral contrast of terrestrial rock samples with the factors expected for the two planets. We observe that a coarse-grained surface and a composition approaching a critical mode could explain the featureless Acidalia spectra on Mars, and suggest that the still open questions about Mercury’s surface regolith characteristics and composition do not exclude a priori the contribution of some of the factors examined in this paper to the peculiar surface properties of this planet.  相似文献

An implementation of Hapke’s radiative transfer-based photometric model for light scattering in semi-transparent porous media is presented with special emphasis on the analysis of reflectance spectra of Mercury. The model allows intimate mixing of an arbitrary number of regolith components with varying modal abundances, modal chemistries and grain sizes, matured by microphase iron. Reflectance spectra of suites of silicates of varying grain sizes and chemistries are used to calculate the imaginary coefficient of the complex index of refraction as a function of chemistry, thus limiting the modeling effects of chemically atypical laboratory samples, and allowing controlled modeling of minerals with varying chemical compositions. The performance of the model in the visual to near-infrared wavelength range is evaluated for a range of chemically characterized silicate mixtures of terrestrial powders, meteorite powders, matured lunar return samples, and remotely sensed lunar spectra.  相似文献

Extraterrestrial particulate materials on the Earth can originate in the form of collisional debris from the asteroid belt, cometary material, or as meteoroid ablation spherules. Signatures that link them to their parent bodies become obliterated if the frictional heating is severe during atmospheric entry. We investigated 481 micrometeorites isolated from ~300 kg of deep sea sediment, out of which 15 spherules appear to have retained signatures of their provenance, based on their textures, bulk chemical compositions, and relict grain compositions. Seven of these 15 spherules contain chromite grains whose compositions help in distinguishing subgroups within the ordinary chondrite sources. There are seven other spherules which comprise either entirely of dusty olivines or contain dusty olivines as relict grains. Two of these spherules appear to be chondrules from an unequilibrated ordinary chondrite. In addition, a porphyritic olivine pyroxene (POP) chondrule‐like spherule is also recovered. The bulk chemical composition of all the spherules, in combination with trace elements, the chromite composition, and presence of dusty olivines suggest an ordinary chondritic source. These micrometeorites have undergone minimal frictional heating during their passage through the atmosphere and have retained these features. These micrometeorites therefore also imply there is a significant contribution from ordinary chondritic sources to the micrometeorite flux on the Earth.  相似文献

In a series of previous papers, a petrological model for the Moon has been developed based on the assumption that the Moon is a globe of differentiated terrestrial mantle material which fissioned from the Earth. One of the major constraints which this model matches is the hypothesis that the lunar upper mantle is dominated by pyroxene. However, it has been recently shown that olivine is most probably the major constituent of the lunar upper mantle and that, at least that part of the Moon has a composition which is very similar to that of pyrolite - the proposed composition of the Earth's mantle. As a result of this new model constraint, the previously proposed differentiation scheme for a Moon of fission origin is reviewed and found to be inadequate, despite modification, for explaining the near pyrolite composition of the lunar upper mantle. As a result, a solidification sequence, which has been proposed to explain the rhythmic banding in terrestrial ultra mafic complexes, is investigated and found to be able to account for the high olivine content of the upper mantle, assuming a pyrolite composition for the Moon.  相似文献
