Limited field and flume data suggests that both uniform and graded beds appear to progressively stabilize when subjected to inter-flood flows as characterized by the absence of active bedload transport. Previous work has shown that the degree of bed stabilization scales with duration of inter-flood flow, however, the sensitivity of this response to bed surface grain size distribution has not been explored. This article presents the first detailed comparison of the dependence of graded bed stability on inter-flood flow duration. Sixty discrete experiments, including repetitions, were undertaken using three grain size distributions of identical D50 (4.8 mm); near-uniform (σg = 1.13), unimodal (σg = 1.63) and bimodal (σg = 2.08). Each bed was conditioned for between 0 (benchmark) and 960 minutes by an antecedent shear stress below the entrainment threshold of the bed (τ*c50). The degree of bed stabilization was determined by measuring changes to critical entrainment thresholds and bedload flux characteristics. Results show that (i) increasing inter-flood duration from 0 to 960 minutes increases the average threshold shear stress of the D50 by up to 18%; (ii) bedload transport rates were reduced by up to 90% as inter-flood duration increased from 0 to 960 minutes; (iii) the rate of response to changes in inter-flood duration in both critical shear stress and bedload transport rate is non-linear and is inversely proportional to antecedent duration; (iv) there is a grade dependent response to changes in critical shear stress where the magnitude of response in uniform beds is up to twice that of the graded beds; and (v) there is a grade dependent response to changes in bedload transport rate where the bimodal bed is most responsive in terms of the magnitude of change. Laboratory experiments using simulated tilting rill channels with different bed roughnesses have been conducted to determine hydraulic conditions for incipient motion of single rock fragments lying on rill beds. These threshold conditions can be described by a modified Shields' entrainment parameter (θm) and relative depth (Z), adjusted for rill conditions. The negative relation found between θm and Z also fits steep (stream) channel data collected by other investigators. Plots of the classical Shields' entrainment parameter (θ) versus both relative depth and relative particle size also showed clear negative trends. Special care has been taken to avoid false relations that can arise between compound parameters. This occurs when the latter are not independent from each other because of their definitions.  相似文献

When sediment grains are transported as bed load in overland flow, there is a net transfer of momentum from the flow to the grains. When these grains collide with other grains, whether on the bed or in the flow, streamwise flow velocity decreases and resistance to flow increases. Resistance to flow generated in this manner is termed bed‐load transport resistance. Resistance to flow f over a plane bed may be partitioned into grain resistance fg and bed‐load transport resistance fbt. We use the symbols fbtf and fbtm to denote fbt for flows over fixed beds and over mobile beds, respectively, and we compute the effect of bed mobility on flow resistance fmob by subtracting fbtf from fbtm. The data for this study come from 54 flume experiments with fixed beds and 38 with mobile beds. On average fmob is approximately equal to half of fbtm, which is about one‐quarter of f. Hence, fmob is about one‐tenth of f. Predictive equations are developed for fbtf, fbtm and fmob using dimensional analysis to identify the relevant independent variables and regression analysis to evaluate the coefficients associated with these variables. Values of fmob are always positive which implies that mobile beds offer greater resistance to flow than do fixed beds. Evidently bed‐load grains colliding with mobile beds lose more momentum to the bed than do grains colliding with fixed beds. Recent research has started to focus on how prolonged periods of sub‐threshold flows may be capable of imparting structural changes that contribute to increased bed stability. To date, this effect (termed ‘stress history’) has been found to be significant in acting to increase a bed's critical shear stress at entrainment threshold. However, it is supported by only limited, qualitative and often speculative information on the mechanisms of this stabilization process in grade‐specific studies. As such, this paper uses high resolution laser scanning to quantitatively ascertain the granular mechanics underpinning the relationship between stress history and entrainment threshold for beds of a range of grain size distributions. Employing a bed slope of 1/200, three grain size distributions with median grain sizes (D50) of 4·8 mm [uniform (σg = (D84/D16)0.5 = 1·13; bimodal (σg = 2·08); and, unimodal (σg = 1·63)] were exposed to antecedent stress histories of 60 and 960 minutes duration. Antecedent shear stress magnitude was set at 50% of the critical shear stress for the D50 when no stress history period was employed. Two laser displacement scans of the bed surface (approximate area 100 mm × 117 mm) were taken, one prior to the antecedent period and one after this period, so that changes to surface topography could be quantified (resolution of x = 0·10 mm, y = 0·13 mm and z = 0·24 mm). Rearrangement of bed surface structure is described using statistical analysis and two‐dimensional (2D) semi‐variograms to analyse scaling behaviour. Results reveal vertical settlement, changes to bed roughness and particle repositioning. However, the bed grain size distribution influences the relative importance of each mechanism in determining stress history induced bed stability; this is the focus of discussion in this paper. The permeability of river beds is an important control on hyporheic flow and the movement of fine sediment and solutes into and out of the bed. However, relatively little is known about the effect of bed permeability on overlying near‐bed flow dynamics, and thus on fluid advection at the sediment–water interface. This study provides the first quantification of this effect for water‐worked gravel beds. Laboratory experiments in a recirculating flume revealed that flows over permeable beds exhibit fundamental differences compared with flows over impermeable beds of the same topography. The turbulence over permeable beds is less intense, more organised and more efficient at momentum transfer because eddies are more coherent. Furthermore, turbulent kinetic energy is lower, meaning that less energy is extracted from the mean flow by this turbulence. Consequently, the double‐averaged velocity is higher and the bulk flow resistance is lower over permeable beds, and there is a difference in how momentum is conveyed from the overlying flow to the bed surface. The main implications of these results are three‐fold. First, local pressure gradients, and therefore rates of material transport, across the sediment–water interface are likely to differ between impermeable and permeable beds. Second, near‐bed and hyporheic flows are unlikely to be adequately predicted by numerical models that represent the bed as an impermeable boundary. Third, more sophisticated flow resistance models are required for coarse‐grained rivers that consider not only the bed surface but also the underlying permeable structure. Overall, our results suggest that the effects of bed permeability have critical implications for hyporheic exchange, fluvial sediment dynamics and benthic habitat availability. © 2017 The Authors. The threshold of coarse sediment transport has been examined in natural streambeds in an upland Pennine (U.K.) area. Threshold values of the total boundary shear stress (T0) (for a given grain size), in a narrow natural stream (W/D < 11) are considerably higher than values of T0 in a broad stream (W/D > 11). Efficiency in the entrainment process is related not only to the overall channel geometry, but also varies as a function of discharge in channels characterized by compound roughness. Empirical curves relating T0 and a mean grain size (d 5) are presented, but are limited in application to streams of similar physical and hydraulic characteristics as the ones examined in this investigation. Considerable divergence is noted between these empirical functions and a summary empirical function for general application obtained from a published source. The reasons for this divergence are discussed. The influence of grain shape was found not to be important in the initiation of motion criterion. This conclusion may reflect the limited range of natural grain shapes in the study streams, but might reasonably apply to other field investigations of similar streams. Modifications of the Shields' and Yalin diagrams are suggested for practical applications in shallow streams with poorly-graded bed material. The Shields' parameter may be regarded as an inverse function of the relative protrusion of individual grains in the shallow flow depth (d 5/D). The increased importance of augmented drag forces, in the entrainment process in shallow flows, is suggested as the physical explanation for the reduced values of the Shields' parameter. However, the relationships presented should not be applied to laboratory experiments concerned with well-graded sediments (therefore beds with little deviation in level), in which the Shields' parameter may be regarded as constant at high Reynolds' grain numbers. Consistent estimated field values of ?, a threshold sediment transport parameter, might be used to compare field data to threshold values derived from statistical arguments and laboratory experiments reported in the literature.  相似文献

Researchers have associated channel-forming flows with reach-average shear stresses close to the entrainment threshold for the surface D50 . We conducted experiments using a model of a generic steep, gravel–cobble stream to test this association. Our results suggest that channel-forming flows fully mobilize the D50 , and produce shear stresses close to the entrainment threshold for the largest grains in the bed. The channel dimensions were set by flows capable of mobilizing between 85% and 90% of the bed surface, which produced a brief period of lateral instability lasting about 1 h, followed by a prolonged period of relative stability during which modest adjustments occurred, but during which the reach-average hydraulics remained about the same. The adjustments during the unstable phase of the experiments are characterized by rapid bank erosion, extensive deposits on the channel bed and a restructuring of the major morphologic elements of the stream. The adjustments during the stable phase of the experiments involved barform migration and bed surface coarsening but did not appreciably modify the physical template established by the end of the unstable phase. The behaviour we observed is not consistent with the concept of a dynamic equilibrium associated with a formative flow that is just capable of entraining the bed surface D50 . Instead, it suggests that rapid adjustments occur once a stability threshold is exceeded, which creates a template that constrains channel activity until another event drives the system across the stability threshold, and re-sets the template. While we believe that it is probably too simplistic to associate a channel-forming discharge with the entrainment threshold for a single grain size, our results suggest that the D95 is a more logical choice than the D50 © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Wind tunnel simulations of the effect of non-erodible roughness elements on sediment transport show that the flux ratio q/qs, shear velocity U*, and roughness density λ are co-dependent variables. Initially, the sediment flux is enhanced by kinetic energy retention in relatively elastic collisions that occur at the roughness element surfaces, but at the same time, the rising surface coverage of the immobile elements reduces the probability of grain ejection. A zone of strong shearing stress develops within 0·03 to 0·04 m of the rough bed because of a relative straightening of velocity profiles which are normally convex with saltation drag. This positive influence on fluid entrainment is opposed by declining shear stress partitioned to the sand bed. Similarly, because the free stream velocity Uf is fixed while U* increases, velocity at height z and particle momentum gain from the airstream decline, leading eventually to lower numbers of particles ejected on average at each impact. When the ratio of the element basal area to frontal area σ is approximately equal to 3·5, secondary flow effects appear to become significant, so that the dimensionless aerodynamic roughness parameter Z0/h and shear stress on the exposed sand bed Ts decrease. It is at this point that grain supply to the airstream and saltation drag appear to be significantly reduced, thereby intensifying the reduction in U*. The effects of check dams on the bed stability of torrential channels have been analysed in several tributary basins of the Segura and Guadalentín rivers (South‐East Spain). In order to illustrate the large variability in channel bed‐forms and bed sediment sizes along the stream, 52 reaches of 150 m in length were surveyed. This variability is due to the behaviour of check dams, which depends on bedrock control, bed slope, channel roughness, lateral sediment input and a highly variable sediment transport capacity. Though the purpose of check dams is to diminish the boundary shear stress, reducing the longitudinal slope, and to stabilize the channel bed, downstream they reduce the volume of channel‐stored material, favouring local scour processes, and upstream they can destabilize the sidewalls. The results enable us to evaluate the impact of every check dam on the bed morphology, distinguishing the structures installed in limy marl areas (e.g. catchment of the Cárcavo rambla, Cieza) and in schist and slate terrains (e.g. catchment of the Torrecilla rambla, close to Lorca). In the first type, bedrock and moderately thick granular beds predominate downstream from the check dams, so that the length of bedrock reaches and increase of roughness due to scour processes are the best indicators to verify its geomorphological effectiveness. On the other hand, the metamorphic areas drained by ramblas and gullies produce great quantities of gravel that are retained by check dams, creating more uniform and permeable beds, where the balance between sedimentation and scouring, and the ratio τc84/τ0 (RBS), appear to be the parameters most frequently adopted to estimate the bed stability. Analysis of slope adjustments and the application of other indices to estimate the bed substrate stability (LRBS, SRI) and the structural influence of the dams (SIBS) corroborate the differences in bed stability found in the corrected reaches in each catchment. The mass and size distribution of grain entrainment per unit bed area may be measured by replacing a volume of the bed with tracer gravels and observing the mass difference before and after a transport event. This measure of spatial entrainment is relevant to any process involving size-selective exchange of sediment between transport and bed and may be directly used in calculations of sediment transport rate using an elementary relation for fractional transport components presented here. This relation provides a basis for evaluating tracer data collected by different methods and may be used to provide physical insight regarding the expected behaviour of tracer grains. The variation with grain size of total displacement length Lti depends on the degree of mobilization of the individual fractions on the bed surface: Lti is independent of Di for smaller, fully mobile sizes and decreases rapidly with Di for larger fractions in a state of partial transport (in which a portion of the surface grains remain immobile through the flow event). The boundary between fully and partially mobile grain sizes increases with flow strength. These inferences are supported by values of Lti calculated from flume experiments and provide a physical explanation for a summary relation between Lti and Di based on field data. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The local reach gradient of small gravel bed rivers (drainage area 0-8-110 km2) in the Eifel, West Germany, is adjusted to transport the river bed sediments. Transport of gravel becomes possible under high flow conditions (Shields entrainment factor ≈-03). Mean bed material size for riffle sections increases with distance downstream. For small drainage areas channel slope is a negative exponential function of drainage area, while for the larger region the additional influence of bedload size has to be considered. Good agreement with Hack's data (1957) for Virginia and Maryland, U.S.A., is achieved (S = 0.0066 (D50/A)- 40., r = 0.67).  相似文献

Partitioning resistance to overland flow on rough mobile beds   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
For overland flows transporting predominantly bed load over rough mobile beds without rainfall, resistance to flow f may be divided into four components: surface resistance fs, form resistance ff, wave resistance fw, and bed‐mobility resistance fm. In this study it is assumed that f = fs + ff + fw + fm, and an equation is developed for each component. The equations for fs and ff are borrowed from the literature, while those for fw and fm are developed from two series of flume experiments in which the beds are covered with various concentrations of large‐scale roughness elements. The first series consists of 65 experiments on fixed beds, while the second series contains 194 experiments on mobile beds. All experiments were performed on the same slope (S = 0·114) and with the same size of sediment (D = 0·00074 m). The equations for fw and fm are derived by a combination of dimensional analysis and regression analysis. The analyses reveal that the major controls of fw and fm are the Froude number F and the concentration of the roughness elements Cr. When the equations for fw and fm are summed, the Cr terms cancel out, leaving fw+m = 0·63F?2. An equation is developed that predicts total f, and the contributions of fs, ff, fw and fm to f are computed from the series 1 and 2 experiments. An analysis of the first series reveals that in clear‐water flows over fixed beds, fw accounts for 52 per cent of f. A similar analysis of the second series indicates that in sediment‐laden flows over mobile beds fw comprises 37 per cent and fm 32 per cent of f, so that together fw and fm account for almost 70 per cent of f. Finally, regression analyses indicate that where F > 0·5, fw and fm each vary with F?2 and fw/fm = 1·18. The equation developed here for predicting total f applies only to the range of hydraulic, sediment, and bed roughness conditions represented by the experimental data. The concept of stream channel grade – according to which a stream channel reach will adjust its gradient, S, in order to transport the imposed sediment load having magnitude Qb and characteristic grain size Db, with the available discharge Q (Mackin, 1948 , Geological Society of America Bulletin 59 : 463–512; Lane, 1955 , American Society of Civil Engineers, Proceedings 81 : 1–17) is one of the most influential ideas in fluvial geomorphology. Herein, we derive a scaling relation that describes how externally imposed changes in either Qb or Q can be accommodated by changes in the channel configuration, described by the energy gradient, mean flow depth, characteristic grain size and a parameter describing the effect of bed surface structures on grain entrainment. One version of this scaling relation is based on the dimensionless bed material transport parameter (W*) presented by Parker and Klingeman ( 1982 , Water Resources Research 18 : 1409–1423). An equivalent version is based on a new dimensionless transport parameter (E*) using dimensionless unit stream power. This version is nearly identical to the relation based on W*, except that it is independent of flow resistance. Both versions of the scaling relation are directly comparable to Lane's original relation. In order to generate this stream power‐based scaling relation, we derived an empirical transport function relation relating E* to dimensionless stream power using data from a wide range of stable, bed load‐dominated channels: the form of that transport function is based on the understanding that, while grain entrainment is related to the forces acting on the bed (described by dimensionless shear stress), sediment transport rate is related to the transfer of momentum from the fluid to the bed material (described by dimensionless stream power). Shear velocity u* is an important parameter in geophysical flows, in particular with respect to sediment transport dynamics. In this study, we investigate the feasibility of applying five standard methods [the logarithmic mean velocity profile, the Reynolds stress profile, the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) profile, the wall similarity and spectral methods] that were initially developed to estimate shear velocity in smooth bed flow to turbulent flow over a loose bed of coarse gravel (D50 = 1·5 cm) under sub‐threshold conditions. The analysis is based on quasi‐instantaneous three‐dimensional (3D) full depth velocity profiles with high spatial and temporal resolution that were measured with an Acoustic Doppler Velocity Profiler (ADVP) in an open channel. The results of the analysis confirm the importance of detailed velocity profile measurements for the determination of shear velocity in rough‐bed flows. Results from all methods fall into a range of ± 20% variability and no systematic trend between methods was observed. Local and temporal variation in the loose bed roughness may contribute to the variability of the logarithmic profile method results. Estimates obtained from the TKE and Reynolds stress methods reasonably agree. Most results from the wall similarity method are within 10% of those obtained by the TKE and Reynolds stress methods. The spectral method was difficult to use since the spectral energy of the vertical velocity component strongly increased with distance from the bed in the inner layer. This made the choice of the reference level problematic. Mean shear stress for all experiments follows a quadratic relationship with the mean velocity in the flow. The wall similarity method appears to be a promising tool for estimating shear velocity under rough‐bed flow conditions and in field studies where other methods may be difficult to apply. A series of controlled laboratory experiments were conducted in order to obtain precise data on the hydraulic and sediment transport conditions during rill formation. Tests were carried out using a crusting-prone binary mixed soil in a 15 m long flume at an average slope of 0·087 under simulated rainfall. Rainfall intensities varied from 30–35 mm h?1 and developed about 70 per cent of the kinetic energy of natural rainfall of similar intensity. Runoff and sediment discharge measured at the downstream weir were strongly influenced by rill forming processes. Essentially, rill incision reduced runoff discharge as a result of increased percolation in rill channels but increased sediment discharge. Secondary entrainment processes, such as bank collapse, also increased sediment discharge at the weir. Knickpoint bifurcation and colluvial deposition, however, decreased sediment discharge. Rills always developed through the formation of a knickpoint. The critical condition for knickpoint initiation was the development of supercritical flow and waves which mould and incise the bed. Prior smoothing of the soil surface by entrainment and redistribution of sediment facilitated supercritical flow. Statistical analysis showed that hydraulic and sediment transport conditions differed significantly in rilled and unrilled flows. The relationship between sediment discharge, rill erosion, and flow hydraulics was found to be nonlinear, conforming to a standard power function in the form y = axb. Rills were also associated with significantly increased sediment transport capacities. However, rill initiation was not clearly defined by any specific hydraulic threshold. Instead, rilled and unrilled flows were separated by zones of transition within which both types of flow occur.  相似文献

Aeolian sand transport is a complicated process that is affected by many factors (e.g. wind velocity, sand particle size, surface microtopography). Under different experimental conditions, erosion processes will therefore produce different results. In this study, we conducted a series of wind tunnel experiments across a range of wind velocities capable of entraining sand particles (8.0, 10.0, 12.0, and 14.0 m s-1) to study the dynamic changes of the shear velocity, aerodynamic roughness length, and sand transport. We found that the shear velocity and aerodynamic roughness length are not constant; rather, they change dynamically over time, and the rules that describe their changes depend on the free-stream air velocity. For wind tunnel experiments without feeding sand into the airflow, the sand bed elevation decreases with increasing erosion time, and this change significantly affected the values of shear velocity and aerodynamic roughness length. A Gaussian distribution function described the relationships between the sand transport rate (qT) and the duration of wind erosion (T). It is therefore necessary for modelers to consider both deflation of the bed and the time scale used when calculating sand transport or erosion rates. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Flume experiments were conducted using four different gravel beds (D50 + 12–39 mm) and a range of marked particles (10–65 mm). The shear stresses were evaluated from friction velocities, when initial movement of marked particles occurred. Two kinds of equations were produced: first for the threshold of initial movement, and second for generalized movement. Equations of the type 0c + a(Di/D50)b, as proposed by Andrews (1983) are applicable even if the material is relatively well sorted. However, the values of a and b are lower (respectively 0·050 and -0·70) for initial movement. Generalized movement requires a higher shear stress (a + 0·068 and b + -0·80). D90 of the bed material and y0 (the bed roughness parameter) were also used as reference values in place of D50. They produced lower values than in natural streams, mainly owing to the fact that the material used in the flume is better sorted: clusters are less well developed and the bed roughness is lower.  相似文献

Entrainment of underlying bed sediment by a debris flow can significantly increase the debris‐flow magnitude. To study this phenomenon, a theoretical approach to assessing bed‐sediment entrainment is presented. The approach is based on a static approximation that bed‐sediment entrainment occurs when the shearing stress of the flow is sufficiently high to overcome the basal resistance of the bed sediment. In order to delineate erodible zones in a channel, we analyze the critical condition of this static equilibrium model, and subsequently propose a new concept of a critical line to detect the entrainment reaches in a channel. Considering the spatial and temporal uncertainties of the input parameter, the approach is further incorporated within a Monte Carlo method, and the distribution of entrainment zones and post‐entrainment volumes can be analyzed. This approach is illustrated by back‐analysis of the 2010 Yohutagawa debris‐flow event, Japan. Results from 10 000 trials of Monte Carlo simulation are compared with the in situ surveys. It is shown that the present approach can be satisfactorily used to delineate erodible zones and estimate possible entrainment volume of the event. Different studies investigating the stability of mixed sediment have found that the fine fraction can either stabilize or mobilize the bed. This study aims to find where the transition between these two modes occurs for sandy sediment and to identify the underlying (grain-scale) processes. Flume experiments with bimodal sediment were used to investigate near-bed processes of a non-cohesive sediment bed, and in particular how the grain shape and the ratio of different grain sizes influence bed mobility. Medium sand (D50,c ≈ 400 μm) was mixed with 40 % fine material of different diameters (D50,f = 53; 111; 193 μm) and subjected to increasing flow velocities (U = 1.3–22.2 cm s-1). The bed mobility (i.e. the change of the bed level over time), turbidity and near-bed hydrodynamics were analysed. Selected results were compared with similar previous experiments with spherical glass beads. The findings indicate that, due to the complex grain shapes of natural sediment, a sand bed is more stable than a bed composed of glass beads. The grain-size ratio RD = Dc /Df between the coarse and fine grain diameters controls whether the mixed bed is stabilized or mobilized by the presence of fines, with the transition between the modes occurring at RD = 4–5.5. Mixed beds with a very low RD < 2 behave like a unimodal bed. The results suggest that RD and grain shape influence bed roughness, near-bed flow, bed microstructure and the flow into and through the upper bed layers, which subsequently governs bed mobility. The interplay between all these processes can explain the transition between the stabilizing effect (high RD, small pore space) and the mobilizing effect (low RD, large pore space) of a fine fraction in a grain-size mixture. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
