Biodegradation, one of the most important weathering processes, alters the composition of spilled oil, making it difficult to identify the source of the release and to monitor its fate in the environment. A laboratory experiment was conducted to simulate oil spill weathering process of microbial degradation to investigate compositional changes in a range of source- and weathering-dependent molecular parameters in oil residues, and the conventional diagnostic ratios for oil spill identification were also evaluated. The conventional diagnostic ratios of n-alkane displayed obvious changes after biodegradation, especially for Pr/n-C17 and Ph/n-C18 with relative standard deviation more than 118.84 %, which suggests they are invalid for oil source identification of the middle-serious spill. Many polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are more resistant to biodegradation process than their saturated hydrocarbon counterparts, thus making PAHs to be one of the most valuable fingerprinting classes of hydrocarbons for oil identification. Biomarker ratios of hopanes and steranes were also useful for source identification even after moderate biodegradation, and the diagnostic ratios from them could be used in tracking origin and sources of hydrocarbon pollution. Finally, the carbon isotopic type curve may provide another diagnostic means for correlation and differentiation of spilled oils, and be particularly valuable for lighter refined products or severely biodegraded oils, the source of which may be difficult to identify by routine biomarker techniques.  相似文献

Simultaneous mass spectral detection and stable carbon isotope analysis was performed on individual indigenous n-alkanes isolated from single C4 and C3 plant species and on a series of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) produced from the combustion of these same biomass materials. The analysis technique used a combined gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer/combustion/isotope ratio mass spectrometer (GC-MS/C/IRMS). Precision (2σ) for replicate measurements of individual compounds in standard solutions using this novel configuration ranged between 0.2 and 0.5‰ for n-alkanes and 0.3 and 0.8‰ for PAH. Accuracy of the n-alkane measurements ranged between 0.1 and 0.4‰ and that of the PAH measurements ranged between 0.2 and 0.9‰. Replicate GC-MS/C/IRMS measurements on the combustion-derived n-alkene/alkane pairs were performed to within a precision of between 0.1 and 1.1‰ and the precision for the combustion PAH was similar to the standard PAH solution. No notable isotopic effects were observed when altering the temperature of the combustion process from 900 to 700°C, or as a result of the individual n-alkenes/alkanes partitioning between the gaseous and condensate fractions. Combustion-derived n-alkenes/alkanes ranged from C11 to C31, and the C4-derived n-alkenes/alkanes were approx. 8‰ more enriched in 13C than the C3-derived compounds. Both the C4 and C3-derived n-alkenes/alkanes (C20-C30) were isotopically similar to the indigenous n-alkanes and were 2-3‰ more depleted in 13C than the lower mol. wt (C1111-C19) n-alkenes/alkanes, suggesting an independent origin for the lower mol. wt compounds. Combustion-generated C4 and C3-derived 2-, 3-, and 4-ring PAH were also isotopically distinct (Δδ = 10‰). Unlike the n-alkenes/alkanes, no compound-to-compound variations were observed between the low and high mol. wt PAH. This study demonstrates that the isotopic composition of original plant biomass material is mainly preserved in the aliphatic hydrocarbons and PAH generated by its combustion. Consequently, analyses of these compounds in sediments impacted by fire occurrences may provide useful information about paleo-fire activity that may help elucidate the impact biomass burning may have had and could have on climate-biosphere interactions.  相似文献

Biodegradation of crude oil causes volumetrically important compositional changes, which lead to significant deterioration in quality, in particular during the early stages of alteration. To better understand these effects we focussed on a detailed assessment of light to moderate levels of alteration. We investigated a suite of 40 crude oil samples from five different petroleum systems to evaluate the extent of alteration occurring in reservoirs. Based on a comprehensive geochemical characterization, five individual crude oil sequences were defined, where compositional variability is mainly due to microbial activity in the reservoir. In particular, samples from the Gullfaks field (offshore Norway) and from a petroleum system offshore Angola illustrate that conventional molecular biodegradation parameters, such as the Pr/n-C17 and Ph/n-C18 alkane ratios are not suitable for defining the extent of biodegradation in petroleum reservoirs. Here, we suggest a new molecular biodegradation parameter, the degradative loss, that can be used to quantify depletion in individual crude oil constituents. The approach allows improved assessment of the extent of biodegradation in crude oil samples by means of the mean degradative loss. It is demonstrated that crude oil quality, as assessed from API gravity, can be predicted directly from the molecular composition of crude oils. Our data clearly indicate that the degradation patterns of light hydrocarbons and n-alkanes differ in different petroleum systems. This suggests that microbial communities are different and therefore generate different molecular degradation patterns which have to be evaluated individually for each system.  相似文献

The concentrations of total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (??PAHs) and 16 individual PAH compounds in 6 surface water and 44 soil samples collected from the vicinity of spilled fuel from a pipeline which carries fuel from a jetty to the tank farm were analyzed. The ??PAHs concentrations in surface water ranged from 0.37 to 99.30?mg/l with a mean concentration of 57.83?mg/l. The ??PAHs concentrations in water are of several orders of magnitude higher than in unpolluted water and some national and international standards including in some surface water in other parts of the world. This suggests that the surface water of the area were heavily polluted by anthropogenic PAHs possibly from the spills. The total PAH concentrations in soil ranged from 16.06 to 25,547.75???g/kg with a mean concentration of 2,906.36???g/kg. ??PAH concentrations of the seven carcinogenic PAH compounds in soil varied between 0.02 and 97,954???g/kg. In terms of composition of patterns in surface water and soil, the PAHs were dominated by four and three rings. The distribution pattern showed marked predominance by low molecular weight compounds. In comparison with ??PAHs concentrations in other part of the world, the total PAH concentrations of this area were higher than those reported for some urban soils in some regions of the world. The ratios of Phe/Ant, Flu/Pyr, Flu/(Flu?+?Pyr), and BaA/(BaA?+?Chyr) in both water and soil indicated various sources of PAH in the area. These sources include fuel spills, burning of motor tyres and vegetation, vehicle repairs and washing, motor exhaust and fire wood burning from cooking.  相似文献

In order to improve understanding of the stratigraphy of the Lake Turkana Basin, one of the important sites in the evolution of early man, this study evaluates the usefulness of organic biological marker compounds, n-alkanes and fatty acids, for correlation of isolated sedimentary strata.Eighty-five paleosol samples were collected from well-defined sedimentary horizons in two regions (Area 103 and Area 130) of the Koobi Fora area of Lake Turkana. Results indicate that most of the organic matter present was derived from terrestrial plant waxes. In sediments where extensive diagenesis has occurred, microbial input of organic matter may have been substantial. Algae were either not an important source of organic matter, or their marker compounds have been removed or altered by degradative processes. The fate of the original paleosol organic matter has been governed to some extent by weathering processes, especially in Area 130. Weathering decreased the amount of extractable lipids, particularly fatty acids and the low molecular weight alkanes (C17C20); produced or retained relatively large amounts of alkanes greater than C21 within a unimodal distribution; and lowered CPI values. Consequently, stratigraphic correlation by unique alkane and fatty acid distributions has been confined to short distances (many meters). Both n-alkanes and fatty acids have been retained better by association with clay minerals than by sand matrices. The alkane distribution of sandstones differs from that of clay organics in having a narrower carbon chain length distribution and lower CPI values. In Area 103, where weathering was less severe, compositional variations with stratigraphic position indicate that lipid material has been retained within each of the facies examined.  相似文献

We determined the distribution of lipids (n-alkanes and n-alkan-2-ones) in present-day peat-forming plants in the Roñanzas Bog in northern Spain. Consistent with the observation of others, most Sphagnum (moss) species alkanes maximized at C23, whereas the other plants maximized at higher molecular weight (C27 to C31). We show for the first time that plants other than seagrass and Sphagnum moss contain n-alkan-2-ones. Almost all the species analysed showed an n-alkan-2-one distribution between C21 and C31 with an odd/even predominance, maximizing at C27 or C29, except ferns, which maximized at lower molecular weight (C21-C23). We also observed that microbial degradation can be a major contributor to the n-alkan-2-one distribution in sediments as opposed to a direct input of ketones from plants.  相似文献

A Cambrian solid bitumen from northwestern Sichuan Basin, southern China was analyzed using two different flash pyrolysis methods coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis, including Pyroprobe® and analytical laser micropyrolysis. Results show that pyrolysis products from a Pyroprobe® (model 5000) analysis are dominated by mono-, di- and tricyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, whilst those from laser micropyrolysis are dominated by aliphatic hydrocarbons (n-alk-1-ene/n-alkane doublets), which is consistent with the results from an FT-IR spectrum of the solid bitumen. According to the molecular compositions of the pyrolysates from two types of pyrolysis, results from a 532 nm continuous wave laser may be more suitable for pyrolysis research of bitumen/asphaltene. Thus, differences in pyrolysis techniques must be considered when used to characterize oil asphaltenes or source rock kerogens.  相似文献

The stable hydrogen isotopic compositions (δD) of selected aliphatic hydrocarbons (n-alkanes and isoprenoids) in eight crude oils of similar source and thermal maturity from the Upper Indus Basin (Pakistan) were measured. The oils are derived from a source rock deposited in a shallow marine environment. The low level of biodegradation under natural reservoir conditions was established on the basis of biomarker and aromatic hydrocarbon distributions. A plot of pristane/n-C17 alkane (Pr/n-C17) and/or phytane/n-C18 alkane (Ph/n-C18) ratios against American Petroleum Institute (API) gravity shows an inverse correlation. High Pr/n-C17 and Ph/n-C18 values and low API gravity values in some of the oils are consistent with relatively low levels of biodegradation. For the same oils, δD values for the n-alkanes relative to the isoprenoids are enriched in deuterium (D). The data are consistent with the removal of D-depleted low molecular weight (LMW) n-alkanes (C14–C22) from the oils. The δD values of isoprenoids do not change with progressive biodegradation and are similar for all the samples. The average D enrichment for n-alkanes with respect to the isoprenoids is found to be as much as 35‰ for the most biodegraded sample. For example, the moderately biodegraded oils show an unresolved complex mixture (UCM), loss of LMW n-alkanes (<C15) and moderate changes in the alkyl naphthalene distributions. The relative susceptibility of alkyl naphthalenes at low levels of biodegradation is discussed. The alkyl naphthalene biodegradation ratios were determined to assess the effect of biodegradation. The dimethyl, trimethyl and tetramethyl naphthalene biodegradation ratios show significant differences with increasing extent of biodegradation.  相似文献

Numerous reports have recognised the presence of compounds with molecular weight 254 a.m.u. in aromatic fractions. However, their unequivocal identification has not been achieved due to a lack of reference substances. In geological samples, such m/z 254 compounds could potentially be represented by a number of structural isomers of binaphthyl, phenylphenanthrene, phenylanthracene and indenofluorene with each compound type possessing several positional isomers. In this work, all these m/z 254 compounds, with the exception of the tentatively recognised indenofluorenes, have been unequivocally identified in sedimentary rocks for the first time. Comparison of the mass spectra and the gas chromatography (GC) retention times of synthesised standards with the natural compounds in rocks shows that the major components of aromatic fractions are phenylphenanthrene isomers and, to a lesser extent, binaphthyls and 9-phenylanthracene. The elution sequence expressed as standard retention indices of all these m/z 254 isomers were determined by using high resolution capillary GC with three stationary phases: 5%, 35% and 50% (mole fraction) phenyl substituted methylpolysiloxane on HP-5MS, DB-35MS and DB-17MS columns, respectively. A survey of more than 350 sedimentary rock samples of varying origins and maturity (Rr 0.3–1.4%) reveals that relative abundances of the m/z 254 isomers depend on the maturity of the organic matter. The isomers initially appear at the onset of oil generation (Rr > 0.5%) exclusively in diagenetically/catagenetically oxidised samples containing varying proportions of Types II and III kerogen. Interestingly, all five possible positional phenylphenanthrene isomers (including the most sterically hindered isomer 4-phenylphenanthrene) are present from the beginning of the oil generation window. Such a distribution suggests that low-regioselectivity reactions are likely to be involved in the formation. Interaction, during maturation, of phenyl radicals from primary cracking with aromatic moieties of more resistant terrigenic components of kerogen in an oxidising diagenetic realm is postulated to be responsible for the neoformation of phenylated aromatics in geological samples. Up to the final stages of oil generation, the evolution of the phenyl PAH distributions presumably involve 1,2-phenyl shift reactions and cyclisation, if allowed by the molecular geometry. A near thermodynamically-controlled distribution, with only 3- and 2-phenylphenanthrene and minor 2,2′-binaphthyl remaining, is approached when vitrinite reflectance reaches 1.2% (Rr). The three compounds seem to be persistent beyond the oil window as is suggested by their presence in hydrothermal oil formed at T > 300 °C.  相似文献

Abundance, sources, and historical records of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediment cores of three lakes located in northeast China were evaluated. One lake was located in a rural oil field area, one in an industrial urban oil field area, and the third in an urban industrialized area without oil field influence. Cores from each lake were divided into 1-cm sections, dated using 137Cs techniques, and 16 priority PAH compounds were measured. Total PAH concentrations were greater in industrial areas than in rural area, regardless of associated oil production. Only petroleum sources of PAHs were identified in lakes near oil fields between 1950s and 1980s, while sources of liquid fossil fuel combustion were persistently identified in the industrial urban lake. From 1990s to 2000s, PAH concentrations, especially high molecular weight PAHs, significantly increased in all lakes, which were consistent with the economic development in China, suggesting a change in energy use from wood burning and petroleum (oil) to liquid fossil fuel combustion. Environmental risk was low to moderate in sediments of the three lakes studied, and increases in high molecular weight PAHs during 1900s–2000s is a concern.  相似文献

Compound-specific H isotope analysis has been used to monitor bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons. However, the success of this approach requires a full evaluation of the isotopic effects resulting from evaporation, because light petroleum hydrocarbons undergo both biodegradation and evaporation under natural conditions. The authors determined the H isotope fractionation of common volatile petroleum hydrocarbons, including the C10–C14 n-alkanes, MTBE (tert-butyl methyl ether), and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, p-xylene and o-xylene) during progressive vaporization under simulated experimental conditions. A decrease in δD values for n-alkanes of up to 33.3‰ and up to 44.5‰ for BTEX compounds when 99% of these substances had evaporated was observed. The results also show that H isotope fractionation increases with n-alkane chain length. Such fractionation patterns are interpreted in terms of competition between the decreased intermolecular binding energy in D-enriched species, and the isotope effect due to the mass difference. In contrast to hydrocarbons, methanol and ethanol show H isotopic enrichment during vaporization, indicating that H-bonding, when present in organic molecules, plays a controlling role on the vapor pressure of different isotope species.  相似文献

The occurrence and distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been studied in oil columns from the Liaohe basin, NE China, characterized by varied degrees of biodegradation. The Es3 oil column has undergone light to moderate biodegradation – ranging from levels 2 to 5 on the [Peters, K.E., Moldowan, J.M., 1993. The Biomarker Guide: Interpreting Molecular Fossils in Petroleum and Ancient Sediments. Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, p. 363] scale (abbreviated as ‘PM level’) – while the shallower Es1 column has undergone more severe biodegradation, ranging from PM level 5 to 8. Both columns show excellent vertical biodegradation gradients, with degree of biodegradation increasing with increasing depth toward the oil–water contact (OWC). The compositional gradients in the oil columns imply mass transport control on degradation rates, with degradation occurring primarily at the OWC. The diffusion of hydrocarbons to the OWC zone will be the ultimate control on the maximum degradation rate. The chemical composition and physical properties of the reservoired oils, and the ‘degradation sequence’ of chemical components are determined by mixing of fresh oil with biodegraded oil.The PAH concentrations and molecular distributions in the reservoired oils from these biodegraded columns show systematic changes with increasing degree of biodegradation. The C3+-alkylbenzenes are the first compounds to be depleted in the aromatic fraction. Concentrations of the C0–5-alkylnaphthalenes and the C0–3-alkylphenanthrenes decrease markedly during PM levels 3–5, while significant isomer variations occur at more advanced stages of biodegradation (>PM level 4).The degree of alkylation is a critical factor controlling the rate of biodegradation; in most cases the rate decreases with increasing number of alkyl substituents. However, we have observed that C3-naphthalenes concentrations decrease faster than those of C2-naphthalenes, and methylphenanthrenes concentrations decrease faster than that of phenanthrene. Demethylation of a substituted compound is inferred as a possible reaction in the biodegradation process.Differential degradation of specific alkylated isomers was observed in our sample set. The relative susceptibility of the individual dimethylnaphthalene, trimethylnaphthalene, tetramethylnaphthalene, pentamethylnaphthalene, methylphenanthrene, dimethylphenanthrene and trimethylphenanthrene isomers to biodegradation was determined. The C20 and C21 short side-chained triaromatic steroid hydrocarbons are degraded more readily than their C26–28 long side-chained counterparts. The C21–22-monoaromatic steroid hydrocarbons (MAS) appear to be more resistant to biodegradation than the C27–29-MAS.Interestingly, the most thermally stable PAH isomers are more susceptible to biodegradation than less thermally stable isomers, suggesting that selectivity during biodegradation is not solely controlled by thermodynamic stability and that susceptibility to biodegradation may be related to stereochemical structure. Many commonly used aromatic hydrocarbon maturity parameters are no longer valid after biodegradation to PM level 4 although some ratios change later than others. The distribution of PAHs coupled with knowledge of their biodegradation characteristics constitutes a useful probe for the study of biodegradation processes and can provide insight into the mechanisms of biodegradation of reservoired oil.  相似文献

In this study, the molecular composition and biomarker distribution of lacustrine sediments from Val-1 drillhole in the central zone of the western part of the Valjevo-Mionica basin were investigated at depth interval of 0–400 m. Former investigations have shown that the core material can be separated into six depth intervals based on bulk geochemical, mineralogical and sedimentological characteristics. Concerning the quality of organic matter, presence of specific minerals, and high salinity and anoxicity, or alkalinity, three zones are of highest interest, defined at depth intervals of 15–75 m (A), 75–200 m (B) and 360–400 m (F). The first aim of the study was to identify which biomarkers characterize these specific intervals. The second aim, addressing the transitions zones of these intervals, was to extend the changes in the characteristics of the organic substance, to reflect the changes of conditions in the depositional environment as well as to define biomarker parameters which are the most sensitive sedimentological indicators. The sediments from the hypersaline anoxic and alkaline environment show high contribution of algal precursor biomass, what is in accordance with the good quality of organic substances in the sediments from these zones. High squalane content and low content of regular isoprenoid C25 are typical for hypersaline anoxic environment, whereas sediments from alkaline environment have high regular isoprenoid C25 content.Transition to specific sedimentation zones is characterized by change in total organic matter content, and of both free and pyrolysis-derived, and change in hydrogen index value. In the biomarker distributions, more significant changes were detected in distributions of n-alkanes and isoprenoids, compared to polycyclic alkanes. The most intensive changes in alkane distribution are reflected in changes in n-C17 content compared to n-C27, and phytane compared to n-C18. In addition, significant sensitivity was seen in ratios between squalane and n-alkane C26 (hypersaline depositional environment), or isoprenoid C25 and n-alkane C22 for high alkalinity environment. This study showed that Sq/n-C26 ratio can be used to assess the quality of organic substance in immature lacustrine sediments.

Anhydrous non-isothermal heating experiments were conducted under controlled compressive stress on cylindrical plugs of six oil shales from Permian through Eocene age. The objective of this study was to compare the distribution of acyclic paraffins in initial, residual and expelled organic matter and to highlight causes of compositional differences resulting from expulsion. Pristane generation from kerogen is highest in the Eocene Messel shale and affects the pristane / phytane (pr / ph) ratio commonly used as a redox proxy. The isoprenoid to n-alkane ratios (pr / n-C17, ph / n-C18) decrease during generation and are lowest in the residual bitumen due to preferential generation and retention of n-alkanes. The n-alkane distribution shows that only lacustrine shales produce high wax oils. Evaporative fractionation leads to loss of n-alkanes up to n-C20 with boiling points below 350 °C. This demonstrates that lacustrine and marine shales may lead to accumulation of low wax oils due to evaporative fractionation after expulsion.  相似文献

Previous studies on lipid biomarkers preserved in Chinese stalagmites have indicated that ratios of low‐molecular‐weight (LMW) to high‐molecular‐weight (HMW) n‐alkanes, n‐alkan‐2‐ones, n‐alkanols and n‐alkanoic acids can be used as an index of vegetation versus microbial organic matter input to the system and, by extension, a marker of climatic changes, with increases in the proportion of LMW compounds coinciding with colder periods. Here we test whether this hypothesis is equally applicable to a different geographical region (north‐west Scotland), by examining a stalagmite record of the past 200 years, and a wider range of lipid markers. We also test the applicability of other lipid proxies in this context, including the use of n‐alkane ratios, to interpret vegetation changes, and unsaturated alkanoic acid ratios as climatic indicators. The results show that lipid proxies preserved in stalagmites, and especially those related to vegetation, are potentially extremely useful in palaeoenvironmental research. Of particular value is the use of C27/C31 n‐alkane ratios as a proxy for vegetation change, clearly indicating variations between herbaceous and arboreal cover. This proxy has now been successfully applied to samples from diverse environments, and can be considered sufficiently robust to be of use in analysing future stalagmite records. It will be of particular value in areas where reliable pollen records are not available, as is often the case with deeper cave deposits. However, the division between LMW and HMW aliphatic compounds is not a clear‐cut case of microbial versus plant activity, with the changes in LMW compounds relating more closely to those in their HMW analogues than in specific bacterial biomarkers. The use of unsaturated alkanoic acid ratios here gives conflicting results, with the observed variation through time depending on the isomer measured. The discrepancies between the findings of this study and previous work are likely to be due to the varying controls on the lipids (original organic matter input, and compound degradation), which in turn will be affected by whether the main climatic limiting factor on the soil is temperature or precipitation. This suggests that lipid proxies preserved in stalagmites must be interpreted with care, particularly in the case of bacterial compounds which may be derived from within the cave or from the soil. However, many of these issues can be resolved by the use of multi‐proxy studies. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Structural studies of a sulphur-rich kerogen and macromolecular oil fractions from the Monterey Formation were performed by selective sequential chemical degradation. The method provides low-molecular weight compounds as former building blocks of the network which allow detailed analyses on a molecular level. The degradation sequence is based on three subsequently performed reactions—a selective cleavage of sulphur bonds in the first step carried out with Ni(0)cene/LiAlD4, an ether and ester bond cleavage (BCl3), and an oxidation of aromatic entities by ruthenium tetroxide as a final step. Each step of this sequence afforded a considerable amount of low-molecular weight material which was separated chromatographically and studied by GC and GC/MS, while the high-molecular weight or insoluble fractions were subjected to the next reaction step. The chemical degradation products—hydrocarbons and carboxylic acids—are discussed in terms of incorporation into the macromolecular structure, distribution of heteroatomic bridges and the genetic relationships between the different macromolecular crude oil fractions and kerogen.Labelling experiments with deuterium provided evidence for a simultaneous linkage by oxygen and sulphur functionalities or by aromatic units and sulphur bonds of cross-linking macromolecular network constituents. The determination of sulphur positions in the macromolecule suggests early diagenetic sulphur incorporation into the biological precursor compounds and subsequent formation of a cross-linked network.  相似文献

Recent sediments of the Andaman Backarc Basin, Indian Ocean, between the Andaman Nicobar islands and the Malay Peninsula have been analyzed for biomarker lipids. Three cores were selected: one each from the fault zone in a deep basin (a graben between two fault systems), another from a location adjacent to the fault, and the third from the topographic high in the rift valley. The molecular composition of the lipid classes (n-alkanes, isoprenoids, alkylbenzenes, alkylcyclohexanes, hopanoids, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, steranes, alcohols, sterols and fatty acids) was examined by gas chromatography (GC) and GC/mass spectrometry to understand the nature and source of the hydrocarbons present and the processes of maturation of organic matter. The data show that the hydrocarbons are of hydrothermal origin, derived from thermal alteration of sedimentary organic matter, consisting of a mixture predominantly of marine-derived components with some terrestrial inputs. Normal alcohols and fatty acids also corroborate the distribution of n-alkanes. The distribution profiles and various parameters computed from the concentration of the target compounds suggest that oxidative reactions and microbial degradation in this environment are insignificant. Triterpane and PAH compositions indicate that the thermal maturity of the bitumen in the samples is comparable to or lower than that found at other hydrothermal regions such as the Northern Juan de Fuca Ridge, Guaymas Basin and Escanaba Trough.  相似文献

Reduction rates in aquifers are commonly carbon limited, but little is known about the molecular composition and degradability of sedimentary organic matter (SOM) in aquifer sediments. The composition, source and degradation status of SOM in aquifer sediments of fluvio-glacial (Pleistocene) and shallow marine (Pliocene) origin, were determined using flash pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Incubation experiments (106 d) were used to assess the reactivity of SOM towards molecular oxygen. A dominance of lignin-derived components and long chain odd-over-even predominant alkanes indicate that terrestrial higher land plants were the main source of SOM even in the shallow marine sediments, while bacterial lipid-derived hopanoids and iso- and anteiso-C15 and C17 fatty acids indicate a minor contribution of microbial biomass. No compositional difference was observed between SOM present in the fine (<63 μm) and coarse fraction (63-2000 μm). A significant part of SOM was not present as low-molecular-weight compounds but was macromolecularly bound. For the fluvio-glacial sediments, a relatively higher abundance of resistant macromolecular compounds was in agreement with stronger signs of aerobic lignin, alkane and hopanoid oxidation. The more degraded status of SOM in the fluvio-glacial sediments was consistent with their significantly lower SOM mineralization (2-6%) during incubation, as compared with the shallow marine sediments (9-14%). The reactivity towards oxygen of SOM was controlled by the extent of past aerobic oxidation. Not the age of SOM, but the extent of oxygen exposure during syn- and postdepositional conditions seems most important in affecting the degradation status of SOM in aquifer sediments and thus their ability to reduce oxidants.  相似文献

Molecular geochemical methods have shown that it is often difficult to differentiate between coal- and interbedded shale-sourced oils, even though coals and interbedded shales may exhibit considerable organic influx variation (e.g. land plant vs algal organic matter) due to the changes of depositional setting. However, compound-specific stable carbon isotopic compositions are sensitive to the source input variations. Typically, specific molecules are more depleted in 13C with increasing content of aqueous biota. This hypothesis is examined and exemplified by comparing the stable carbon isotopic ratios of n-alkanes from source rock extracts and related oils of the Turpan basin, north-western China. Stable carbon isotopic values of n-alkanes extracted from coals and interbedded shales show that δ13C values of n-alkanes with less than 20 carbon atoms vary only slightly. However, there are dramatic changes in the isotopic compositions of higher molecular weight n-alkanes. Furthermore, n-alkanes from coal extracts are enriched in 13C relative to that of interbedded shales with excursions up to 2–3‰. This comparison enables the differentiation of coal- and interbedded shale-sourced oils, and provides information useful in assessing the hydrocarbon system of a basin.  相似文献
