The varying overall nature of the solar wind interaction with the ionospheres of CO and CO2-dominated comets is investigated and compared with previous results for H2O-dominated comets. It is shown that as a comet approaches the sun, it may exhibit one of two types of ionospheric transitions. (In rare circumstances, the cometary ionosphere may display a third type of transition in addition to one of the first two). For both transitions, the ionosphere turns from being hard (in other words, the ionosphere is not susceptible to compression under sudden solar wind pressure increases) to soft. However, for one type of transition, the bow shock changes from being weak (M2) to being strong (M10), whereas for the other type of transition, the bow shock remains weak. The heliocentric distance at which these transitions may occur is found to be a function of the cometary nuclear radius, the latent heat of sublimation of the surface volatiles, the surface bolometric albedo and the following ionospheric properties: the optical depth, the average ionization time scale and the amount of heat addition. Two important consequences of the strong shocks are the large solar wind velocity modulation of the energization of electrons at the bow-shock and the relatively quick formation of cometary plasma tails. These results are applied to the case of comet Humason (1962 VIII). It is shown that either a CO or CO2 dominated surface can explain not only the strong coma and tail activity of this comet at large heliocentric distances, but it can also explain the irregular activity of this comet at such distances.  相似文献

A quasi-steady 1-D hydrodynamic model, with mass addition, has been used to study the various modes of interaction of the solar wind with a medium-bright, H2O-dominated comet (such as P/Halley) approaching the Sun.At large heliocentric distances (d 5 AU) the solar wind penetrates unimpeded on to the surface. As the comet moves further in, mass loading of the solar wind by heavy ions from the fledgling cometary atmosphere causes it to slow down, thereby causing a significant enhancement of the interplanetary field. Still further in at d 3.14 AU, as the mass loading reaches a critical value, a collision-less standing shock is formed in the solar wind upstream of the nucleus. As d decreases further, the distance of this shock from the nucleus increases. The cometary atmosphere becomes dense enough to stand off the solar wind ahead of the nuclear surface and form a well defined tangential discontinuity surface (or ionopause) only when d reaches the value 2.65 AU. When d 2.65 AU an inner shock could, in principle, also form within the cometary ionosphere, although its existence would depend on the detailed thermodynamics of the cometary ionosphere. Resolution of this question is beyond the scope of the present analysis. The conclusions of the present study would be qualitatively valid for other comets having sizes, surface optical properties and chemical compositions, different from those adopted here. The helio-centric distances at which the various transitions take place from the one mode of solar wind interaction to another, would, of course, be different, with all these distances being smaller for less active comets.  相似文献

A calculation of the non-steady development of a multi-species atmosphere of a comet moving in a near-parabolic heliocentric orbit is presented. The monochromatic brightness variations of the characteristic cometary emission bands due to OH, CN and C2 are then evaluated assuming that the parent molecules of these chemically unstable species are respectively H2O, HCN and H2C2 present in a homogeneous H2O clathrate nucleus. For small heliocentric distances where a quasi-steady approximation is valid, the brightness variations follow Levin's (1943) law, provided all the destruction mechanisms of the cometary molecules vary as the inverse square of the heliocentric distance. On the other hand, at large heliocentric distances Levin's law breaks down, essentially due to the large time-scales of residence of the emitting species in the cometary atmosphere. This large residence time at large heliocentric distance also produces an asymmetry between the brightness profiles of the inbound and outbound passages, such that the brightness declines less steeply with distance on the outbound passage than on the inbound. Consequently, the monochromatic brightness of OH at 4 AU outbound is about twice as large as the corresponding value inbound. While some comets show such an effect, others show just the opposite effect. These deviations, which show the limitations of our simple homogeneous model, are discussed qualitatively in terms of the plausible time varying physical structure of the cometary nucleus. The variations of the relative monochromatic brightnesses of the various emissions are also discussed, and the need for extending monochromatic brightness measurements to larger heliocentric distances is stressed.  相似文献

Coronal holes on the Sun are the source of high-speed solar wind streams that produce magnetic disturbances at the Earth. A series of multi-wavelength, multi-instrument observations obtained during the 1996 Whole Sun Month campaign examined a large coronal hole in greater detail than ever before. It appeared on the Sun in August, and extended from the north pole to a large active region in the southern hemisphere. Its physical and magnetic structure and subsequent evolution are described.  相似文献

Not considering very rare in situ measurements of cometary nuclei, observations of comets at large heliocentric distances are the only direct source of our knowledge on their sizes. Observations of a cometary nucleus in pure reflected sunlight, at the time when coma is absent, are the way in which the nucleus size can be estimated. Probabilities that extreme observations represent non—active stages of cometary nuclei and also reliability of derived cometary nucleus sizes are investigated. Statistical analysis is based on a sample of 2842 photometric observations of 67 long-period comets observed at large heliocentric distances. For any long-period comet, there is a probability of 2:3 that the sizes derived on the basis of observations at extreme distances are in good agreement with the real nucleus sizes. For new comets in Oort's sense the probability is 3:4 independent of investigated arcs of orbits. For old comets a chance to estimate correct sizes is 1:2 but on the pre-perihelion arc only 1:3. It is also demonstrated that a premature start of activity prior to perihelion or a longer fading after perihelion is more frequent than a short-time isolated activity at large heliocentric distances.  相似文献

The occurrence at a heliocentric distance of 1 AU of alpha particle streaming velocities larger than proton streaming velocities,v /v p >1 (Ogilvie, 1975) is investigated on the basis of the theory suggesting the existence in the solar wind of an accelerating force acting preferentially on the alpha particles.Accurate solution of the three-fluid model equations for the quiet solar wind indicates that anecessary andsufficient condition for (v /v p )1 AU>1 is the presence of a relativelyweak accelerating forceacting in a limited region in the vicinity of 1 AU. If the force is effectiveonly at small heliocentric distances, the alpha particle streaming velocity excess vanishes at distances less than 1 AU, because of the (equalization) action of the dynamical friction force.  相似文献

Two indices have been developed for the purpose of comparing the natures of various classes of comets. The first is the Activity Index (AI), measuring the inherent magnitude increase in brightness from great solar distances to maximum near perihelion. The second, or Volatility Index (VI), measures the variation in magnitude near perihelion. Tentative determinations of these two indices are derived from observations by Max Beyer over more than 30 years for long-period (L-P) and short-period (S-P) comets near perihelion and from other homogeneous sources. AI determinations are made for 32 long-period (L-P) comets and for 14 short-period (S-P). The range of values of AI is of the order of 3 to 10 magnitudes with a median about 6. An expected strong correlation with perihelion distance q, is found to vary as q –2.3. Residuals from a least-square solution (AI) are used for comparing comets of different orbital classes, the standard deviation of a single value of AI is only ±1m.1 for L-P comets and ±1m.2 for S-P comets.Among the L-P comets, 19 of period P larger than 104 years yield AI = 0m.27 ± 0m.25 compared to 0m.39 ± 0m.26 for 13 of period between 102 years and 104 years. This denies any fading with aging among the L-P comets. Also no systematic change with period occurs for the VI index, leading to the same conclusions. Weak correlations are found with the Gas/Dust ratio of comets. No correlations are found between the two indices, nor of either index with near-perihelion magnitudes or orbital inclination. The various data are consistent with a uniform origin for all types of comets, the nuclei being homogeneous on the large scale but quite diverse on a small scale (the order of a fraction of kilometer in extent). Small comets thus may sublimate away entirely, leaving no solid core, while huge comets may develop a less volatile core by radioactive heating and possibly become inactive like asteroids after many S-P revolutions about the Sun. When relatively new, huge comets may be quite active at great solar distances because of volatiles from the core that have refrozen in the outer layers.  相似文献

Magnetically closed regions in the solar wind   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Interplanetary plasma and magnetic field data collected by Helios-1, Helios-2 and IMP-8 satellites over the periods December 1974–December 1976, January 1976–December 1976 and December 1974–December 1976, respectively, are analysed. From this analysis, we identified 85 about cases in which the proton temperature was very low. In 50 of these cases, the interplanetary magnetic field showed characteristic variations favorable for closed structures in the solar wind.By using the calculated radial temperature gradients as a function of the solar wind speed and the heliocentric distance we were able to identify cold protons in the neighborhood of the Sun (0.3 AU).The estimation of the distance at which regions of cold protons are formed (10R ) shows that this distance is the same whether we are using solar wind plasma data measured in fixed or in varied heliocentric distances.  相似文献

On board the SOHO spacecraft poised at L1 Lagrange point, the SWAN instrument is mainly devoted to the measurement of large scale structures of the solar wind, and in particular the distribution with heliographic latitude of the solar wind mass flux. This is obtained from an intensity map of the sky Lyman emission, which reflects the shape of the ionization cavity carved in the flow of interstellar H atoms by the solar wind. The methodology, inversion procedure and related complications are described. The subject of latitude variation of the solar wind is shortly reviewed: earlier Lyman results from Prognoz in 1976 are confirmed by Ulysses. The importance of the actual value of the solar wind mass flux for the equation of dynamics in a polar coronal hole is stressed. The instrument is composed of one electronic unit commanding two identical Sensor Units, each of them allowing to map a full hemisphere with a resolution of 1°, thanks to a two-mirrors periscope system. The design is described in some details, and the rationale for choice between several variants are discussed. A hydrogen absorption cell is used to measure the shape of the interplanetary Lyman line and other Lyman emissions. Other types of observations are also discussed : the geocorona, comets (old and new), the solar corona, and a possible signature of the heliopause. The connexion with some other SOHO instruments, in particular LASCO, UVCS, SUMER, is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Except for protons, the chemical composition of solar cosmic rays is very similar to the abundance of the elements at the photosphere of the Sun. If we consider the relative abundance ratio of protons to -particles (P/) at constant rigidity, this ratio is highly variable from one solar cosmic ray event to another. This ratio observed at the Earth, however, decreases monotonically with time from the onset of solar flares and, furthermore, is dependent on the heliocentric distance of the parent flares from the central meridian of the solar disk. P/'s which have been measured before the onset of SC geomagnetic storms change from 1.5 to 50 or more, being a function of the westward position of the source from the east limb of the Sun. These variations with respect to time and heliocentric distance suggest that the propagation of solar cosmic rays is strongly modulated in the interplanetary space. The major part of the -particles seem to propagate as if they are trapped within the magnetic clouds which produce SC geomagnetic and cosmic ray storms at the earth. The chemical composition and rigidity spectra of solar cosmic rays suggest that solar cosmic rays are mainly accelerated by the Fermi mechanism in solar flares. The observed variation of P/'s is produced mainly through the difference between the propagation characteristics of protons and -particles.NAS-NRC Associate with NASA.  相似文献

We present Very Large Array observations at wavelengths of 2, 3.5, 6, and 20 cm, of angular broadening of radio sources due to the solar wind in the region 2–16 solar radii. Angular broadening is anisotropic with axial ratios in the range 2–16. Larger axial ratios are observed preferentially at smaller solar distances. Assuming that anisotropy is due to scattering blobs elongated along magnetic field lines, the distribution of position angles of the elliptically broadened images indicates that the field lines are non-radial even at the largest heliocentric distances observed here. At 5R , the major axis scattering angle is 0.7 at =6 cm and it varies with heliocentric distance asR –1.6. The level of turbulence, characterized by the wave structure function at a scale of 10 km along the major axis, normalized to =20 cm, has a value 20±7 at 5R and varies with heliocentric distance asR –3. Comprison with earlier results suggest that the level of turbulence is higher during solar maximum. Assuming a power-law spectrum of electron density fluctuations, the fitted spectral exponents have values in the range 2.8–3.4 for scales sizes between 2–35 km. The data suggests temporal fluctuations (of up to 10%) in the spectral exponent on a time scale of a few tens of minutes. The observed structure functions at different solar distances do not show any evidence for an inner scale; the upper limits are 1 km at 2R and 4 km at 13R . These upper limits are in conflict with earlier determinations and may suggest a reduced inner scale during solar maximum.  相似文献

Angular orbital parameters of Kreutz sungrazing comets are considered. Three groups of Kreutz dwarf comets are distinguished based on the positioning of orbit poles, and the motion of fragments from group A is modeled numerically. It is found that Kreutz dwarf comets have a very large parameter А 3 of nongravitational acceleration. This may be associated with sublimation of substances more refractory than water ice at extremely short heliocentric distances. It is demonstrated that the nongravitational acceleration of Kreutz dwarf comets is asymmetric with respect to perihelion, and the perturbing function maximum is observed ~15 min after the perihelion passage.  相似文献

When solar wind plasma in the trailing (eastern) edge of a high-speed stream is mapped back to its estimated source in the high corona using the constant radial velocity (EQRH) approximation, a large range of velocities appears to come from a restricted range in longitude, often only a few degrees. This actually constitutes a sharp eastern coronal boundary for the solar wind stream source, and demands that the boundary have a three-dimensional structure. Using interplanetary data, we infer a systematic variation in source altitude (identified approximately with the Alfvén point), with faster solar wind attaining its interplanetary characteristics at lower altitudes. This also affects the accuracy of the source longitude estimates, so that we infer a width in the high corona of 4–6° for the source of the trailing edges of streams which appear to originate from a single longitude. We demonstrate that the possible systematic interplanetary effects (in at least some cases) are not large ( 2° in heliocentric longitude). The relatively sharp boundaries imply that high-speed streams are well-defined structures all the way down to their low coronal sources, and that the magnetic field structure controls the propagation of the plasma through the corona out to the vicinity of the Alfvén point ( 20 R ).  相似文献

Hourly interplanetary plasma data measured by Helios-1 satellite over the period 10 December 1974–31 December 1977 are analysed. This analysis showed that the slow solar wind first increases its speed with heliocentric distance and then becomes more or less constant; the mean speed in the range 0.3 to 1.0 AU is 350 km s–1 for the slow solar plasma, while for the fast the mean value is between 650 and 700 km s–1.It seems, particularly in the neighbourhood of the earth, that except for the two dominated types of solar wind (fast and slow) an additional (intermediate) appears at 450 km s–1.During the phase of enhanced solar activity (11-yr solar cycle) the slow solar wind only is present, while at solar minimum all three types of the solar wind are equally represented. The dependence of the proton temperature on the solar wind speed, in the general solar wind, is the same irrespectively of the phase of solar activity. But, the same dependence is stronger during the compression at the leading edge than during the expansion at the trailing edge of a solar wind stream.  相似文献

A well-known method for studying the solar wind very close to the Sun (heliocentric distances: 4 to 40 solar radii) is by radio sounding between a spacecraft at superior conjunction and the Earth. The Ulysses Solar Corona Experiment was performed at the spacecraft's two solar conjunctions in summer 1991 and winter 1995, during which dual-frequency ranging and Doppler observations were conducted globally on a nearly continuous basis at the NASA Deep Space Network and other ground stations. The dual-frequency Doppler measurements were used to determine coronal plasma velocities by a cross-correlation analysis during those occasions when tracking data were recorded simultaneously at two well-separated ground stations. A filtering technique was developed to suppress noise and enhance the 2-station correlations, a procedure particularly effective at small solar offsets. From the electron content measurements during the two solar conjunctions it was found that regions of higher electron density tend to occur when the two-station correlations yield slower outward flow velocities.  相似文献

Observations on a grid of 900 radio sources have been used to map and to track large-scale structures in the solar wind at distances of 0.6–1.5 AU from the Sun. Most of the disturbances were shells of enhanced density followed by high-speed streams lasting for several days, although more stable corotating interaction regions were also observed. Ninety-six disturbances were mapped during August 1978–September 1979 and those of the erupting stream-type were usually accompanied by shocks and geomagnetic activity if they encountered the Earth. Back-projection to the Sun indicated sources that were always associated with coronal holes. Possible associations with solar flares and disappearing filaments occurred but on many occasions no flare or filament activity was evident anywhere on the disc within a suitable time interval. It is concluded that erupting streams are transients generated by coronal hole activity. Evidence is presented which further suggests that coronal mass ejections of the curved-front variety may be identified with these erupting streams.  相似文献

A number of Jupiter family comets such as Otermaand Gehrels 3make a rapid transition from heliocentric orbits outside the orbit of Jupiter to heliocentric orbits inside the orbit of Jupiter and vice versa. During this transition, the comet can be captured temporarily by Jupiter for one to several orbits around Jupiter. The interior heliocentric orbit is typically close to the 3:2 resonance while the exterior heliocentric orbit is near the 2:3 resonance. An important feature of the dynamics of these comets is that during the transition, the orbit passes close to the libration points L 1and L 2, two of the equilibrium points for the restricted three-body problem for the Sun-Jupiter system. Studying the libration point invariant manifold structures for L 1and L 2is a starting point for understanding the capture and resonance transition of these comets. For example, the recently discovered heteroclinic connection between pairs of unstable periodic orbits (one around the L 1and the other around L 2) implies a complicated dynamics for comets in a certain energy range. Furthermore, the stable and unstable invariant manifold tubes associated to libration point periodic orbits, of which the heteroclinic connections are a part, are phase space conduits transporting material to and from Jupiter and between the interior and exterior of Jupiter's orbit.  相似文献

Abstract— We measured concentrations and isotopic ratios of noble gases in enstatite (E) chondrites Allan Hills (ALH) 85119 and MacAlpine Hills (MAC) 88136. These two meteorites contain solar and cosmogenic noble gases. Based on the solar and cosmogenic noble gas compositions, we calculated heliocentric distances, parent body exposure ages, and space exposure ages of the two meteorites. The parent body exposure ages are longer than 6.7 Ma for ALH 85119 and longer than 8.7 Ma for MAC 88136. The space exposure ages are shorter than 2.2 Ma for ALH 85119 and shorter than 3.9 Ma for MAC 88136. The estimated heliocentric distances are more than 1.1 AU for ALH 85119 and 1.3 AU for MAC 88136. Derived heliocentric distances indicate the locations of parent bodies in the past when constituents of the meteorites were exposed to the Sun. From the mineralogy and chemistry of E chondrites, it is believed that E chondrites formed in regions within 1.4 AU from the Sun. The heliocentric distances of the two E chondrite parent bodies are not different from the formation regions of E chondrites. This may imply that heliocentric distances of E chondrites have been relatively constant from their formation stage to the stage of exposure to the solar wind.  相似文献

We analyze our earlier data on the numerical integration of the equations of motion for 274 short-period comets (with the period P<200 yr) on a time interval of 6000 yr. As many as 54 comets had no close approaches to planets, 13 comets passed through the Saturnian sphere of action, and one comet passed through the Uranian sphere of action. The orbital elements of these 68 comets changed by no more than ±3 percent in a space of 6000 yr. As many as 206 comets passed close to Jupiter. We confirm Everhart’s conclusion that Jupiter can capture long-period comets with q = 4–6 AU and i < 9° into short-period orbits. We show that nearly parabolic comets cross the solar system mainly in the zone of terrestrial planets. No relationship of nearly parabolic comets and terrestrial planets was found for the epoch of the latest apparition of comets. Guliev’s conjecture about two trans-Plutonian planets is based on the illusory excess of cometary nodes at large heliocentric distances. The existence of cometary nodes at the solar system periphery turns out to be a solely geometrical effect.  相似文献

Seventeen comets, having information on sodium D-line emission during their apparition, have been studied. The heliocentric distances corresponding to the sodium emission commencement or termination epoch are found to have a dependence on the phase of the solar cycle. For comets appearing during a solar maximum the sodium emission is detectable out to greater distances than, for the comets appearing during solar minimum. The sodium emission is also found to depend on heliographic latitude of the comet. It is concluded that the spatial properties of the solar wind during a solar maximum and minimum are responsible for the observed dependence.  相似文献
