A detailed analysis of rapid-run magnetograms from Guam (geomagnetic latitude = 4.2°) revealed that there are two kinds of geomagnetic sudden commencement (SC) observed in nighttime. One is the ordinary SC consisting of a main impulse only which has a smooth rise of the H-component. The other is a superposition by a small positive impulse on the very beginning part of the smooth rise of the main impulse and consequently the SC starts with a small stepwise increase of the H-component. The latter type of SC occurs between 20 and 08 h L.T. and its occurrence rate takes the maximum value of about 50% around 03 h L.T. Corresponding magnetograms from a dayside equatorial station (Huancayo, geomagnetic latitude = ?0.7°) were examined and a good correlation was found between the stepwise SC at the nightside (Guam) and SC1 with a preliminary reverse impulse (PRI) at the dayside (Huancayo). Since PRI observed at the dayside equator may be interpreted as an extension of an ionospheric current due to an dusk-to-dawn electric field impressed on the polar ionosphere, our results show that a polar originating ionospheric current can extend to the nightside equator and produce a small but observable magnetic effect in spite of much reduced nighttime ionospheric conductivity.  相似文献

The result of investigating high-latitude Pc1–2 pulsations are presented in this paper. They show that these unstructured oscillations are typical in intervals of low magnetic activity for regions of projections of the dayside cusp on the Earth's surface. The morphological properties of these pulsations, namely the character of their diurnal variations and dependence of their amplitude and frequency of occurrence on magnetic activity on different latitudes, suggest methods of utilization for tracing the location of the equatorial boundary of the dayside cusp. It is suggested that Pc1–2 pulsations are generated mainly in the dayside magnetosheath on field lines, crossing the magnetopause and entering in the dayside cusp. The possible mechanism of generation is the ion-cyclotron instability of plasma of finite pressure (β ? 1) and with anisotropic temperature (T > T).  相似文献

The Voyager Ultraviolet Spectrometer has made extensive observations of airglow from Jupiter's dark-side equatorial latitudes. The brightness of H Lyman α (Lyα), the only emission detected, varies between 700 and 1000 rayleighs (R) as a function of lungitude. The dark side of Jupiter is illuminated by sky background Lyα arising from resonance scattering of the solar Lyα line by the neutral hydrogen of the interstellar medium. Calculations show that resonance scattering of this sky background by hydrogen in Jupiter's thermosphere will produce about 300 R of Lyα emission. The additional Lyα observed is probably excited by electrons and protons precipitating at equatorial latitudes. Based on the 500-R upper limit set here on the dark-side H2 Lyman and Werner bands, and the Lyα measurements, the exciting particles are thought to have a soft energy spectrum and deposit about 0.04 erg cm?2 sec?1 in the atmosphere. There is evidence for an asymmetrical precipitation pattern associated with the longitudinal variation in Ly α emission, and a suggestion of a strong day-night difference in precipitation as well.  相似文献

We report the results of monitoring Saturn's H2 quadrupole and CH4 band absorptions outside of the equatorial zone over one-half of Saturn's year. This interval covers most of the perihelion half of Saturn's elliptical orbit, which happens to be approximately bounded by the equinoxes. Marked long-term changes occur in the CH4 absorption accompanied by weakly opposite changes in the H2 absorption. Around the 1980 equinox, the H2 and CH4 absorptions in the northern hemisphere appear to be discontinuous with those in the southern hemisphere. This discontinuity and the temporal variation of the absorptions are evidence for seasonal changes. The absorption variations can be attributed to a variable haze in Saturn's troposphere, responding to changes in temperature and insolation through the processes of sublimation and freezing. Condensed or frozen CH4 is very unlikely to contribute any haze. The temporal variation of the absorption in the strong CH4 bands at south temperate latitudes is consistent with a theoretically expected phase lag of 60° between the tropopause temperature and the seasonally variable insolation. We model the vertical haze distribution of Saturn's south temperature latitudes during 1971–1977 in terms of a distribution having a particle scale height equal to a fraction of the atmospheric scale height. The results are a CH4/H2 mixing ratio of (4.2 ± 0.4) × 10?3, a haze particle albedo of ω = 0.995 ± 0.003, and a range of variation in the particle to gas scale-height ratio of 0.6 ± 0.2. The haze was lowest near the time of maximum temperature. We also report spatial measurements of the absorption in the 6450 Å NH3 band made annually since the 1980 equinox. A 20 ± 4% increase in the NH3 absorption at south temperate latitudes has occurred since 1973–1976 and the NH3 absorption at high northern latitudes has increased during spring. Increasing insolation, and the resulting net sublimation of NH3 crystals, is probably the cause. Significant long-term changes apparently extend to the deepest visible parts of Saturn's atmosphere. An apparently anomalous ortho-para H2 ratio in 1978 suggests that the southern temperate latitudes experienced an unusual upwelling during that time. This may have signaled a rise in the radiative-convective boundary from deep levels following maximum tropospheric temperature and the associated maximum radiative stability. This would be further evidence that the deep, visible atmosphere is governed by processes such as dynamics and the thermodynamics of phase changes, which have response times much shorter than the radiative time constant.  相似文献

A quantitative magnetospheric magnetic field model has been calculated in three dimensions. The model is based on an analytical solution of the Chapman-Ferraro problem. For this solution, the magnetopause was assumed to be an infinitesimally thin discontinuity with given geometry. The shape of the dayside magnetopause is in agreement with measurements derived from spacecraft boundary crossings. The magnetic field of the magnetopause currents can be derived from scalar potentials. The scalar potentials result from solutions of Laplace's equation with Neumann's boundary conditions. The boundary values and the magnetic flux through the magnetopause are determined by all magnetic sources which are located inside and outside the magnetospheric cavity. They include the Earth's dipole field, the fields of the equatorial ring current and tail current systems, and the homogeneous interplanetary magnetic field. In addition, the flux through the magnetopause depends on two constants of interconnection which provide the possibility of calculating static interconnection between magnetospheric and interplanetary field lines. Realistic numerical values for both constants have been derived empirically from observed displacements of the polar cusps which are due to changes in the orientation of the interplanetary field. The transition from a closed to an open magnetosphere and vice versa can be computed in terms of a change of the magnetic boundary conditions on the magnetopause. The magnetic field configuration of the closed magnetosphere is independent of the amount and orientation of the interplanetary field. In contrast, the configuration of the open magnetosphere confirms the observational finding that field line interconnection occurs primarily in the polar cusp and high latitude tail regions. The tail current system reflects explicitly the effect of dayside magnetospheric compression which is caused by the solar wind. In addition, the position of the plasma sheet relative to the ecliptic plane depends explicitly on the tilt angle of the Earth's dipole. Near the tail axis, the tail field is approximately in a self-consistent equilibrium with the tail currents and the isotropic thermal plasma. The models for the equatorial ring current depend on the Dst-parameter. They are self-consistent with respect to measured energy distributions of ring current protons and the axially symmetric part of the magnetospheric field.  相似文献

From high precision computer controlled tracings of bright Ca+-mottles we investigated differential rotation, meridional and random motions of these chromospheric fine structures. The equatorial angular velocity of the Ca+-mottles agrees well with that of sunspots (14°.50 per day, sidereal) and is 5 % higher than for the photosphere. The slowing down with increasing latitude is larger than for sunspots. Hence in higher latitudes Ca+-mottles rotate as fast as the photospheric plasma. A systematic meridional motion of about 0.1 km s–1 for latitudes around 10° was found. The Ca+-mottles show horizontal random motions due to the supergranular flow pattern with an rms velocity of about 0.15 km s–1. We finally investigated the correctness of the solar rotation elements i and derived by Carrington (1863).  相似文献

We have studied the 27-day variations and their harmonics in Galactic cosmic ray (GCR) intensity, solar wind velocity, and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) components during the recent prolonged solar minimum 23/24. The time evolution of the quasi-periodicity in these parameters connected with the Sun’s rotation reveals that the synodic period of these variations is ≈?26?–?27 days and is stable. This means that the changes in the solar wind speed and the IMF are related to the Sun’s near-equatorial regions in considering the differential rotation of the Sun. However, the solar wind parameters observed near the Earth’s orbit provide only the conditions in the limited local vicinity of the equatorial region in the heliosphere (within ±?7° in latitude). We also demonstrate that the observed period of the GCR intensity connected with the Sun’s rotation increased up to ≈?33?–?36 days in 2009. This means that the process that drives the 27-day GCR intensity variations takes place not only in the limited local surroundings of the equatorial region but in the global 3-D space of the heliosphere, covering also higher latitude regions. A relatively long period (≈?34 days) found for 2009 in the GCR intensity gives possible evidence of the onset of cycle 24 due to active regions at higher latitudes and rotating slowly because of the Sun’s differential rotation. We also discuss the effect of differential rotation on the theoretical model of the 27-day GCR intensity variations.  相似文献

Using magnetic data from the geostationary satellites of ATS 6 and SMS/GOES series, long-period geomagnetic pulsations, Psc 4 and Psc 5, associated with geomagnetic sudden commencements (SC's) were statistically analyzed. Local time and geomagnetic latitude dependence of the occurrence, and local time dependence of the period and the amplitude were examined for 218 SC's. For transverse Psc 5 pulsations which could be observed at all local times, the period was shorter and the amplitude was smaller near noon than in the morning and evening sides. Compressional Psc 5's, which were observed mainly from about 09.00 L.T. to midnight, had larger amplitude near noon. The period seemed to be longer near noon. As for Psc 4 pulsations the period tended to be shorter near noon. Psc 4's with the largest amplitude appeared near noon, but on the whole Psc 4's in the evening side had larger amplitude. The compressional Psc occurred more frequently near the geomagnetic equator (geomagnetic latitude φm≌ 5°N) than at higher latitude (φm≌ 9° ~ 12°N). We suggest that the transverse Psc 5 pulsations can be considered to be magnetic field-line resonant oscillations excited by impulsive waves, while the compressional Psc 5's may be oscillations localized near the geomagnetic equator.  相似文献

The paper presents simulations of the energetic neutral atom (ENA) production in the Mercury magnetosphere and the obtained ENA images for the equatorial and polar vantage points. The ENA fluxes are found to be 102–103 (cm2 srskeV)−1 and up to 104–105 (cm2 srskeV)−1 in the energy range 10–50 keV. Due to the small size of the magnetosphere, the particles injected in the tail can fill up the entire dayside magnetosphere making possible ENA imaging of the magnetospheric shape. The high variability of the Hermean magnetosphere gives rise to pulsating ENA emissions (ENA “flashes”) which can be used to study the global dynamics. The ENA instrument requirements, 10°×10° angular resolution and 20 s accumulation time, can be easily met by modern ENA instrumentation. Therefore, ENA imaging of the Mercury magnetosphere is feasible.  相似文献

In order to investigate Pc3-4 geomagnetic pulsations at very low and equatorial latitudes, L=1.0 to 1.2, we analyzed simultaneous geomagnetic data from Brazilian stations for 26 days during October-November 1994. The multitaper spectral method based on Fourier transform and singular value decomposition was used to obtain pulsation power spectra, polarization parameters and phase. Eighty-one (81) simultaneous highly polarized Pc3-4 events occurring mainly during daytime were selected for the study. The diurnal events showed enhancement in the polarized power density of about 3.2 times for pulsations observed at stations close to the magnetic equator in comparison to the more distant ones. The phase of pulsation observed at stations near the magnetic equator showed a delay of 48-62° in relation to the most distant one. The peculiarities shown by these Pc3-4 pulsations close to the dip equator are attributed to the increase of the ionospheric conductivity and the intensification of the equatorial electrojet during daytime that regulates the propagation of compressional waves generated in the foreshock region and transmitted to the magnetosphere and ionosphere at low latitudes. The source mechanism of these compressional Pc3-4 modes may be the compressional global mode or the trapped fast mode in the plasmasphere driving forced field line oscillations at very low and equatorial latitudes.  相似文献

The visible airglow experiment on the Atmosphere Explorer-C satellite has gathered sufficient data over the Earth's polar regions to allow one to map the geographic distribution of particle precipitation using emissions at 3371 and 5200 Å. Both of these features exhibit large variations in space and time. The 3371 Å emission of N2(C3π), excited by low energy electrons, indicates substantial energy inputs on the dayside in the vicinity of the polar cusp. More precipitation occurs in the morning than evening for the sample reported here, while the entire night sector between magnetic latitudes 65° and 77.5° is subjected to particle fluxes. Regions of enhanced 5200 Å emission from N(2D) are larger in horizontal extent than those at 3371 Å. This smearing effect is due to ionospheric motions induced by magnetospheric convection.  相似文献

It is proposed that Saturn's electrostatic discharges (SED) might be generated in the planet's equatorial atmosphere, perhaps as lightning from a storm system. The 10h10m periodicity of the signal envelope duplicates that of Saturn's equatorial jet. The rings shield the atmosphere from solar EUV photons, and thereby substantially reduce the local ionospheric cutoff frequency to allow low-frequency SED to leak out. Many of the unusual properties of SED could be explained in terms of changes in the storm system, the relative spacecraft position in the beaming pattern of the source, local refraction of the signal by the highly disturbed ionosphere, and the influence of the ring particles on the highest frequency component of SED. A comparison of SED with planetary lightning on other planets shows that the two are similar in general character and some time behavior; the power output of SED may be higher than most planetary lightnings but that is unclear because of uncertainties in the measurements and variations in the signal's spectrum. Our simple discussion suggests that lightning could be a viable source for SED and that exotic ring mechanisms are not necessarily required.  相似文献

The expected diurnal waves with different harmonics in cosmic ray intensity arising from the semidiurnal anisotropy, due to the geometrical inclination of the Earth's axis, are calculated for different cosmic ray stations. The sensitivity of these waves to the exponent n of the latitude dependence function cosn λ for the semidiurnal anisotropy is investigated. The amplitudes of the geometrical tridiurnal waves for high latitude stations show a great sensitivity to n and, therefore, it is concluded that its value can be determined precisely from the tridiurnal wave rather than from the semidiurnal waves observed at different latitudes. Available data from high latitude neutron monitors were used to determine n and it was found as 2±0.4, which is of higher accuracy than the previously determined values. The present results are consistent with either the density gradient or loss cone models of the semidiurnal anisotropy. Furthermore, they show that the geometrical tridiurnal waves have a very small amplitude and can be neglected in any analysis concerning tridiurnal variations in cosmic ray intensity.  相似文献

Stellar ultraviolet light near 2500 Å is attenuated in the Earth's upper atmosphere due to strong absorption in the Hartley continuum of ozone. The intensity of stars in the Hartley continuum region has been monitored by the University of Wisconsin stellar photometers aboard the OAO-2 satellite during occultation of the star by the Earth's atmosphere. These data have been used to determine the ozone number density profile at the occultation tangent point. The results of approximately 12 stellar occultations, obtained in low latitudes, are presented, giving the nighttime vertical number density profile of ozone in the 60- to 100-km region. The nighttime ozone number density has a bulge in its vertical profile with a peak of 1 to 2×108 cm?3 at approximately 83 km and a minimum near 75 km. The shape of the bulge in the ozone number density profile shows considerable variability with no apparent seasonal or solar cycle change. The ozone profiles obtained during a geomagnetic storm showed little variation at low latitudes.  相似文献

Based on the results from three balloon flights, made at Hyderabad(7.6°N geomagnetic latitude) using omnidirectional gamma ray spectrometers, the different aspects of the low energy atmospheric gamma rays at equatorial latitudes in the energy interval 100 keV to 1 MeV are investigated and detailed discussion is presented. The energy loss spectrum in this energy range is found to consist of a continuum superimposed on which is a photopeak due to 0.51 MeV line arising from electron positron annihilation. The continuous background spectrum is similar to that observed at mid and high latitudes. The intensity of 0.51 MeV line is estimated to be 0.079 ± 0.01 photons cm−2 sec−1 at 6 g cm−2 over Hyderabad and the altitude dependence of its intensity is established for this low latitude station. The latitude effect of the intensity of this line at 6 g cm−2 is derived for the first time by comparing the results of the present measurements with those available for mid and high latitudes. The contribution of the cosmic gamma rays to the observed count rates at 6 g cm−2 is shown to be negligible in the case of the omnidirectional spectrometers of the type used in the present observations even for low latitude stations.  相似文献

Autospectra in the 2–13 month range, computed from mean monthly horizontal intensity on quiet days at Trivandrum, situated close to the dip equator, suggest an exceedingly large semi-annual modulation of the field confined to an interval of about 5 hr centred at 1000 LT. The amplitude of the semi-annual oscillation at this station, derived from power density, is greater than 19 γ at 1000 LT. Between 1900 and 0500 LT, spectral lines, corresponding to a period of six months, are not observed above the continuum. Spectral densities from observations at two other electrojet stations in India, Kodaikanal and Annamalainagar, and at Alibag, outside the electrojet, establish the existence of an appreciable enhancement of the semi-annual oscillation of the field in the equatorial electrojet belt. Similar computations of spectra using observations on all days, however, suggest a secondary component in the evening sector. This component is not enhanced in the equatorial electrojet belt. It is concluded that while in low latitudes the daytime component is largely associated with the modulation of Sq currents, in the electrojet belt it appears to be due entirely to a semi-annual modulation of the equatorial electrojet. It is also concluded that the secondary component, observed in the evening sector in low latitude and equatorial stations, is associated purely with the modulation of the ring current by disturbance. The two components of the semi-annual variation observed at the Indian stations have also been noticed at several stations between geomagnetic latitudes N54.6° and S41.8°. It is also observed that the association of the semi-annual component with geomagnetic latitude is confined to the evening-night component.  相似文献

Triton's seasons differ materially from those of Pluto owing to four important differences in the governing physics: First, the obliquity of Triton is significantly less than Pluto's obliquity. Second, Triton's inclined orbit precesses rapidly about Neptune so that a complicated seasonal variation in the latitude of the Sun occurs for Triton. Third, Neptune's orbit is much more circular than Pluto's orbit so that the sunlight intercepted by Triton's disk does not vary seasonally. Finally, Triton's atmosphere cannot be saturated at the lower latitudes so that the mass of the atmosphere is controlled by the temperature of the high-latitude ices or liquids (polar caps), as for CO2 on Mars. The consequences of Triton's entire surface being covered with volatile substances have been examined. It is found that the circularity of Neptune's orbit then implies that Triton would have hardly any seasonal variation at all in surface temperature or atmospheric bulk, in spite of the complicated precessional effects of Triton's orbit. The only seasonal effect would be the migration of surface ices and liquids. This scenario is ruled out because it implies a column CH4 abundance much higher than that observed and because it quickly depletes the lower latitudes of volatiles. It is concluded that Triton's most volatile surface substances are probably relegated to latitudes higher than 35° and probably form polar caps. The temperature of the polar caps should be nearly equal, even during midwinter/midsummer when the insolation of the summer pole is greatest. If the summer pole completely sublimates during one of the “major” summers, Triton's atmosphere may begin to freeze out over the winter caps. It is therefore expected that Triton's atmosphere undergoes large and complex seasonal variations. Triton is currently approaching a “maximum southern summer”, and over the remainder of this century, a dramatic increase in CH4 abundance above the current upper limit of 1 m-Am may be witnessed.  相似文献

The mean, solar-fixed horizontal and vertical distribution of water vapor in and above the Venusian cloud layer is presented. This is derived from far-infrared measurements made by the Orbiter Infrared Radiometer (OIR) instrument of the Pioneer Venus mission in the rotation band of water vapor at 45 μm, and from the mean solar-fixed temperature field and cloud structure retrieved from temperature soundings by the same instrument in five spectral channels. The water vapor retrieval scheme is discussed together with the calculation of water vapor transmission functions and their experimental verification. The sensitivity of the results to measurement errors and cloud microphysical properties is also considered. Mean water vapor column abundances above cloud unit optical depth at 11.5 μm are found to be greatest at equatorial latitudes in the early afternoon, reaching 50 ± 20 precipitable microns (100 ppm), and fall to less than 3 ± 2 precipitable microns (6 ppm) on the nightside of the planet. On the nightside mixing ratios fall monotonically with altitude, whereas dayside mixing ratios frequently increase with altitude near cloud unit optical depth. These results are broadly consistent with those of earlier Earth-based measurements.  相似文献

We investigate the contribution of scattering in the telescope to our measurements of the size of Io's sodium cloud and to the distribution of emission intensity in the cloud. The brightest regions, within 30″ of Io near opposition and along the equatorial plane, are relatively undistorted but regions further than 45″ away and not close to the equatorial plane are very likely to consist of mainly scattered light. Portions of the cloud in the vicinity of the magnetic equator are also mostly scattered light when Io is near extreme magnetic latitude. The equatorial torus, however, extends up to 20 arcmin from Jupiter. The large size of the cloud is thus confirmed. High-resolution line profile shapes indicate that sodium streams from Io preferentially in the forward direction with velocities distributed up to 18 km sec?1. The observed wavelength shifts of the peak intensities from Io's rest frame are compatible with a cloud streaming through a bound atmospheric component but they could also be caused by a velocity distribution peaked at very low velocities.  相似文献
