A convergent margin magma series with characteristic low Nband Ta abundances and enrichments in alkalis and alkaline earthsis intercalated with typical intraplate alkalic basalts in aback-arc setting, 200–250 km above the Wadati-Benioffzone on the North Island, New Zealand. These two contrastingmagma types, together with late-stage K-rich maflc lavas, wereerupted over a short time period (1{dot}60–2{dot}74 Ma)and constitute the Alexandra Volcanics. Field relationshipsindicate that these diverse magma types were contemporaneous,and thus their mantle source regions coexisted, in a singletectonic environment. The convergent margin magma series forms a linear chain of stratovolcanoesaligned at right angles to the present subduction zone. Closed-systempolybaric fractional crystallization models can explain theevolution from ankaramites to transitional olivine basalts toolivine tholeiites to high-Al basalts to medium- and high-Kandesites. The most primitive lavas have geochemical (high LIL/LREEand LIL/HFS element ratios) and Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic compositionstypical of convergent margin magmas. Calculated source compositionssuggest that three components are involved: a MORB component,a component derived from subducted oceanic crust, and a contributionfrom subducted sediments. The alkalic basalts occur as dispersed monogenetic volcanoesand are intercalated with the larger convergent margin stratovolcanocs.These basalts are enriched in LILE, LREE, Nb, and Ta, and havelow Ba/Nb and Ba/La ratios, all of which are characteristicof ocean island (intraplate) basalts (OIBs). Their relativelyhigh Nd (+5{dot}5 and low 87Sr/86Sr(0{dot}703l–0{dot}7036)are also typical of OIBs. These alkalic magmas were derivedfrom the underlying continental lithospheric mantle that hasbeen enriched by upward-migrating silica-undersaturated melts,probably including volatiles, from the low- velocity zone. Asubducted slab component is not required to account for theirincompatible element enriched character. The K-rich mafic lavas, basanites, and absarokites are volumetricallyminor and cap the largest of the stratovolcanoes, Pirongia.The basanites have geochemical and isotopic compositions whichsuggest they are mixtures of multiple source components, includingthe alkalic and convergent margin region.  相似文献

We present new U-series isotope, 87Sr/ 86Sr, 143Nd/ 144Nd andtrace element data for a set of mafic, K-rich rocks from volcanoesin Central–Southern Italy. These shoshonitic to ultrapotassiclavas display strongly depleted high field strength element(HSFE) abundances with respect to other incompatible trace elementstogether with high but variable 87Sr/ 86Sr and low but variable143Nd/ 144Nd values. Such characteristics are thought to bedue to addition of subducted crust of variable amount and compositionto their mantle sources prior to magma genesis. Rocks from thenorthernmost region (i.e. Tuscan Magmatic Province and NorthernRoman Magmatic Province) display (230Th/ 238U) activity ratiosclose to radioactive equilibrium, suggesting that metasomatismof their sources occurred before 400 ka and recent melting tookplace at shallow depths, in the absence of garnet. A 238U excessof up to 27% has been measured in rocks from the NeapolitanDistrict. The occurrence of significant U excesses is a featureof arc magmas, but is typically seen in depleted lavas ratherthan in highly enriched rocks such as these (20 ppm Th). Thissignature requires a recent addition of a U-rich component tothe already strongly enriched mantle wedge beneath this regionof Italy. We suggest that a supercritical liquid, from deeplysubducted carbonate-rich sediments of the still-active Ionianslab, is responsible for generating a high-U, low-Th component,which produces the observed disequilibria. A 30% 230Th excessmeasured in a single unaltered sample from the Lucanian MagmaticProvince, along with a less marked negative HFSE anomaly, suggeststhe contribution of a deeper, garnet-bearing component in thegenesis of these magmas, plausibly related to the upwellingof asthenospheric mantle around the corner of the Ionian slab. Ultramafic xenoliths from alkali basalts in the Perjani Mountainsin the Eastern Transylvanian Basin (ETB) of Romania are mainlyspinel Iherzolites, although spinel harzburgites, websterites,clinopyroxenites and amphibole pyroxenites are also present.Amphibole veins cut some spinel peridotite samples. All arederived from the shallow lithospheric upper mantle. In general,textural variations are restricted to protogranular and porphyroclastictypes, compared with the more varied textures found in mantlexenoliths from the alkali basalts of the neighbouring PannonianBasin. Also, ETB peridotites are richer in amphibole. Thus,the mantle beneath the edge of the ETB is less deformed butmore strongly metasomatized than the mantle closer to the centreof the Pannonian Basin.Mineralogical and bulk-rock geochemicalvariations resemble those of spinel Iherzolites from other sub-continentalshallow mantle xenolith suites. There is no apparent correlationbetween deformation and geochemistry, and much of the majorand trace element variation is due to variable extraction ofpicritic melts. The REE patterns of separated clinopyroxenesfrom the peridotite xenoliths are mostly LREE depleted, althoughclinopyroxenes from regions adjacent to amphibole veins haveexperienced an enrichment in La and Ce and a change in theirSr and Nd isotopic values towards those of the vein, while stillretaining an overall LREE depletion. Clinopyroxenes from thewebsterites and clinopyroxenites are more variable. Amphibolein the hydrous pyroxenites and amphibole veins is strongly LREEenriched and is considered to be metasomatic in origin. 87Sr/86Srand 143Nd/l44Nd isotopic ratios of the xenoliths vary between07018 and 07044, and 051355 and 0 51275, respectively. Thesevalue are more depleted than those obtained for xenoliths fromthe Pannonian Basin. The lower l43Nd/l44Nd and higher 87Sr/Sr86values are found in anhydrous pyroxenites, metasomatic amphibolesin veins and amphibole pyroxenites, and in the only exampleof an equigranular spinel Iherzolite in the suite.The ETB xenolithswere brought to the surface in alkaline vokanism which post-dateda period of Miocene to Pliocene subduction-related cak-alkalinevolcanism. However, the effects of the passage of either slab-derivedfluids or cak-alkaline magmas through the ETB lithospheric mantlecannot be discerned in the chemistry of the xenoliths. The metasomaticamphibole has 87Sr/Sr86 and 143Sr/Sr144 ratios similar to thehost alkali basalts, but the least evoked cak-alkaline magmasalso have similar Sr and Nd isotope compositions. The REE patternsof the amphibole resembk those of amphiboles considered to havecrystallized from alkaline melts. No preferential enrichmentin elements typically associated with slab-derivedfluids (K,Rb and Sr) relative to elements typically depleted in cak-alkalinemagmas (Ti, 2jr and Nb) has been observed in the vein amphiboles,although some interstitial amphibole is depleted in all incompatibletrace elements, including LREE. Thus, despite its position closeto the calc-alkaline volcanic arc of the Eastern Carpathians,we cannot readily detect any interaction between the lithosphericupper mantle beneath the ETB and subduction-related magmas orfluids. Metasomatism in the lithospheric mantle is instead largelyrelated to the passage of a primitive alkaline magma similarto the host alkali basal *corresponding author  相似文献

Major and trace element and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic variationsin mafic volcanic rocks hve been studied in a 220 km transectacross the Kamchatka arc from the Eastern Volcanic Front, overthe Central Kamchatka Depression to the Sredinny Ridge in theback-arc. Thirteen volcanoes and lava fields, from 110 to 400km above the subducted slab, were sampled. This allows us tocharacterize spatial variations and the relative amount andcomposition of the slab fluid involved in magma genesis. TypicalKamchatka arc basalts, normalized for fractionation to 6% MgO,display a strong increase in large ion lithophile, light rareearth and high field strength elements from the arc front tothe back-arc. Ba/Zr and Ce/Pb ratios, however, are nearly constantacross the arc, which suggests a similar fluid input for Baand Pb. La/Yb and Nb/Zr increase from the arc front to the back-arc.Rocks from the Central Kamchatka Depression range in 87Sr/86Srfrom 0·70334 to 0·70366, but have almost constantNd isotopic compositions (143Nd/144Nd 0·51307–0·51312).This correlates with the highest U/Th ratios in these rocks.Pb-isotopic ratios are mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB)-like butdecrease slightly from the volcanic front to the back-arc. Theinitial mantle source ranged from N-MORB-like in the volcanicfront and Central Kamchatka Depression to more enriched in theback-arc. This enriched component is similar to an ocean-islandbasalt (OIB) source. Variations in (CaO)6·0–(Na2O)6·0show that degree of melting decreases from the arc front tothe Central Kamchatka Depression and remains constant from thereto the Sredinny Ridge. Calculated fluid compositions have asimilar trace element pattern across the arc, although minordifferences are implied. A model is presented that quantifiesthe various mantle components (variably depleted N-MORB-mantleand enriched OIB-mantle) and the fluid compositions added tothis mantle wedge. The amount of fluid added ranges from 0·7to 2·1%. The degree of melting changes from  相似文献

The Kahoolawe shield volcano produced precaldera and caldera-filling tholeiites and mildly alkalic post-caldera lavas that petrographically and compositionally resemble such lavas from other Hawaiian shield volcanoes. However, Kahoolawe tholeiites display wide ranges in incompatible trace element ratios (e.g., Nb/Th=9–24, Th/Ta=0.6–1.3), 87Sr/86Sr (0.70379–0.70440), 143Nd/144Nd (0.51273–0.51298), and 206Pb/204Pb (17.92–18.37). The isotopic variation exceeds that at any other Hawaiian shield volcano, and spans about half the range for all Hawaiian tholeiites. Quasi-cyclic temporal evolution of Kahoolawe tholeiites is consistent with combined fractional crystallization and periodic recharge by primitive magmas. Ratios of highly incompatible trace elements and Sr, Nd, and Pb isotopic ratios from coherent sub-trends that reflect recurrent interactions between variably evolved magmas and two other mantle components whose compositions are constrained by intersections between these trends. The most MgO-rich Kahoolawe tholeiites are partial melts of a high Nb/Th (23.5) ascending plume, possibly comprising ancient subducted oceanic lithosphere. Slightly evolved tholeiites experienced combined crystal fractionation and assimilation (AFC) of material derived from a distinct reservoir (Nb/Th 9) of asthenospheric derivation. The most evolved tholeiites display compositional shifts toward a third component, having mid ocean ridge basalt-like isotopic ratios but enriched OIB-like trace element ratios, representing part of the lithospheric mantle (or melts thereof). Periodic recurrence of all three magma variants suggests that eruptions may have tapped coeval reservoirs distributed over a large depth range. Kahoolawe provides new evidence concerning the nature of the Hawaiian plume, the distribution of compositional heterogeneities in the suboeanic mantle, and the processes by which Hawaiian tholeiites form and evolve.  相似文献

The geochemistry and evolution of early precambrian mantle   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Seven high-purity cumulate clinopyroxenes from 2.7 b.y. maficultramafic rock associations from the Abitibi belt, Superior Province, Canada, have been analyzed for major elements and K, Rb, Cs, Ba, Sr and 87Sr/86Sr ratio. Attempts to reconstruct the trace element patterns of the original parent magmas were partially successful; Sr contents (140 ppm), K/Rb (470) and K/Ba (16) ratios are similar to those of modern low-K island arc tholeiites. K/Cs ratios (2700) are significantly lower than island arc tholeiites (17,000) or oceanic island and oceanic ridge basalts (> 30,000); the presentday mantle seems to be more depleted in Cs than in Archean times. Initial Sr isotope ratios of the 7 Archean clinopyroxenes average 0.70114±13(2σ) with relatively little variation; this value is in good agreement with initial ratios published for felsic and mafic rocks of the same age, though the latter show much larger variations and uncertainties. The pyroxene Sr isotope data, in conjunction with data for rocks of other ages, defines the following simple model for mantle evolution:
  1. starting with primordial Sr, a short period of relatively rapid 87Sr/86Sr growth, followed by Rb depletion;
  2. a period between ≧ 3.5 b.y. and ~ 1.7 b.y. when closed-system Sr isotope evolution occurred (with Rb/Sr ~ 0.023);
  3. development of large-scale Rb/Sr heterogeneities in the mantle at ~ 1.7 b.y., leading to a present-day mantle with 87Sr/86Sr ranging from 0.7023 to 0.7065 and Rb/Sr ranging from ~ 0 to 0.065.

We use published and new trace element data to identify element ratios which discriminate between arc magmas from the supra-subduction zone mantle wedge and those formed by direct melting of subducted crust (i.e. adakites). The clearest distinction is obtained with those element ratios which are strongly fractionated during refertilisation of the depleted mantle wedge, ultimately reflecting slab dehydration. Hence, adakites have significantly lower Pb/Nd and B/Be but higher Nb/Ta than typical arc magmas and continental crust as a whole. Although Li and Be are also overenriched in continental crust, behaviour of Li/Yb and Be/Nd is more complex and these ratios do not provide unique signatures of slab melting. Archaean tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorites (TTGs) strongly resemble ordinary mantle wedge-derived arc magmas in terms of fluid-mobile trace element content, implying that they did not form by slab melting but that they originated from mantle which was hydrated and enriched in elements lost from slabs during prograde dehydration. We suggest that Archaean TTGs formed by extensive fractional crystallisation from a mafic precursor. It is widely claimed that the time between the creation and subduction of oceanic lithosphere was significantly shorter in the Archaean (i.e. 20 Ma) than it is today. This difference was seen as an attractive explanation for the presumed preponderance of adakitic magmas during the first half of Earth's history. However, when we consider the effects of a higher potential mantle temperature on the thickness of oceanic crust, it follows that the mean age of oceanic lithosphere has remained virtually constant. Formation of adakites has therefore always depended on local plate geometry and not on potential mantle temperature.  相似文献

A total of 17 alkali basalts (alkali olivine basalt, limburgite, olivine nephelinite) and quartz tholeiites, and of 10 peridotite xenoliths (or their clinopyroxenes) were analyzed for Nd and Sr isotopes. 143Nd/144Nd ratios and 87Sr/86Sr ratios of all basalts and of the majority of ultramafic xenoliths plot below the mantle array with a large variation in Nd isotopes and a smaller variation in Sr isotopes. The tholeiites were less radiogenic in Nd than the alkali basalts. Volcanics from the Eifel and Massif Central regions contain Nd and Sr, which is more radiogenic than that of the basalts from the Hessian Depression. Nd and Sr isotopic compositions of all rocks from the latter area, with the exception of one tholeiite and one peridotite plot in the same field of isotope ratios as the Ronda ultramafic tectonite (SW Spain), which ranges in composition from garnet to plagioclase peridotite. The alkali basaltic rocks are products of smaller degrees of partial melting of depleted peridotite, which has undergone a larger metasomatic alteration compared with the source rock of tholeiitic magmas. For the peridotite xenoliths such metasomatic alteration is indicated by the correlation of their K contents and isotopic compositions. We assume that the upper mantle locally can acquire isotopic signatures low in radiogenic Nd and Sr from the introduction of delaminated crust. Such granulites low in radiogenic Nd and Sr are products of early REE fractionation and granite (Rb) separation.  相似文献

Pliocene volcanics on the island of Bequia comprise two interbeddedsuites of basalts and andesites. The isotopically homogeneoussuite (IHS) has a limited range of Sr—Nd—Pb isotopes(87Sr/86Sr 0.7040–0.7046, 143 Nd/144 Nd 0.5130 and 206Pb/204Pb 19.36–19.51), and mantle-like 18O values (5.5in clinopyroxene). The isotopically diverse suite (IDS) is characterizedby much wider ranges of radiogenic isotopes (87 Sr/86Sr 0.7048–0.7077,143 Nd/144 Nd 0.5128–0.5123 and 206 Pb/204 Pb 19.7–20.2),in which all of the Sr and Pb ratios are higher and Nd ratiosare lower than those of the IHS. The IDS is also characterizedby high 18 O values, up to 7.6 in clinopyroxene. The Sr andPb isotope ratios are too high, and the Nd isotope ratios aretoo low in the IDS for any of these lavas to be derived fromunmodified depleted mantle. Both suites are petrologically very similar and their majorelement compositions and phenocryst contents suggest that theywere formed largely by fractional crystallization of a hydroustholeiitic melt at pressures <3 kbar. The isotopic ratiosand enrichments in large ion lithophile elements (LILE), andto some extent light rare earth elements (LREE), as comparedwith mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB), of the IHS lavas suggestthat they were derived from a depleted mantle source which hadbeen re-enriched by the addition of 1–4% of a subductioncomponent. This component probably comprised a mixture of dehydrationfluids, and perhaps minor siliceous melts, released from subductingsediments and mafic crust. The extreme isotopic ranges, largeenrichments in incompatible elements, more fractionated LREEpatterns and higher 18 O values of the IDS lavas are interpretedas resulting from 10–55% assimilation—fractionalcrystallization of sediments, derived from the Guyana Shield,which are present in the arc crust, by IHS type melts. The Torfaj?kull volcano, Iceland's largest silicic centre, issituated close to the junction of the active, southerly propagatingEastern Rift Zone and the South Eastern Zone, an older crustalsegment. This paper provides major, trace, and some Sr isotopedata on postglacial (<10000 y) rocks, i.e., tholeiitic magmasof the Eastern Rift Zone and transitional basalts, icelandites,and rhyolites of the Torfaj?kull centre, and assesses the relationshipsbetween the magma types in terms of the development of the Icelandiccrust. Tholeiitic magmas from the Eastern Rift Zone are LILE-enrichedrelative to MORB. They have undergone extensive olivine-plagioclase-clinopyroxenefractionation at low pressures. Compared with the tholeiites,Torfaj?kull transitional basalts show LILE/HFS enrichment andhigher (87Sr/86Sr)1 ratios. They define several magmatic lineagesand have equilibrated over a wide range of pressures. Both basalttypes were derived by very small degrees of partial meltingof compositionally similar mantle sources, the main differencebeing that the tholeiites were generated in the spinel Iherzolite,and the transitional basalts in the garnet lherzolite, stabilityfields, a conclusion previously reached by Meyer et al. (1985).The mantle sources may have contained LILE-enriched streaks. Low-pressure differentiation of Torfaj?kull transitional basaltproduced an iceiandite to sub-alkaline rhyolite sequence bycrystal fractionation, the rhyolites representing >90% crystallizationof parental basalts. The rhyolites were emplaced as nine separatelava fields, formed during 11 eruptive episodes. The compositionalrange within each field is limited, and, although similar, theranges define several magmatic lineages. Continued fractionationof plagioclase-alkali feldspar-clinopyroxene-magnetite-apatite-zirconassemblages generated peralkaline rhyolites in certain post-glacialeruptions. Chemical variations in the deposits from the Hrafntinnuskerperalkaline eruption were related predominantly to alkali feldsparfractionation, and the melts were erupted from a zoned magmachamber. All postglacial volcanic rocks at Torfajokull havebeen mantle derived and thus represent new additions to theIcelandic crust.  相似文献

The island of St Martin lies inthe inactive part of the northernLesser Antilles island arc. The island consists of volcaniclasticsediments overlain and intruded by volcanic and plutonic rocks,which are in turn overlain by Miocene limestones. The extrusiveand intrusive rock suites are closely spaced in time (around27 Ma) although field relations suggest that the volcanic rockswere intruded by the plutons. Pluton emplacement gave rise tothermal metamorphism of the volcanic and volcaniclastic carapace,and to widespread hydrothermal alteration throughout the island. Geochemically, the igneous rocks of St Martin form a mildlytholeiitic to calc-alkaline typical subduction-related suite.The extrusive rocks are basalts to andesites, and the magmasappear to have differentiated largely through fractional crystallizationof plagioclase, clinopyroxene, and olivine. The REE displayflat chondrite-normalized patterns, with no significant Eu anomalydespite convincing evidence for plagioclase fractionation. Theplutonic rocks are more silica-rich diorites to granites, containingplagioclase, amphibole, and, less commonly, K-feldspar, sphene,zircon, and pyroxene. REE patterns are slightly LREE enrichedbut display distinct negative Eu anomalies. The fractionationof amphibole and accessory phases may have been important inthe evolution of the plutonic suite, as REE contents do notincrease overall with differentiation. Sr and Nd isotopic ratios of the St Martin suite form restrictedranges which vary little with differentiation, or between theextrusive and intrusive suiteSi 87Sr/86Sr ratios are slightlyhigher and 143Nd/l44Nd slightly lower than for volcanic rocksuites from the currently active northern Lesser Antilles volcanicarc. Some of the high 87Sr/86Sr ratios are explained in termsof hydrothermal alteration involving a high 87Sr/86Sr fluid,associated with pluton emplacement. Pb isotope ratios are similarto those of the currently active northern Lesser Antilles arc,and correlate with SiO2. Such correlations, together with largeranges of incompatible (and immobile) trace element ratios suggestthat open-system differentiation occurred during the evolutionof the St Martin suite. The composition of magma sources in the northern Lesser Antillesarc apparently has not changed significantly over the last 30Ma, despite a westward shift in the locus of arc magmatism.Addition of a slab-derived fluid to the mantle wedge is responsiblefor the high relative abundances of large ion lithophile elements(LILE) and enrichment in radiogenic Pb and Sr relative to mid-oceanridge basalt (MORB). Subsequent differentiation may involveassimilation of the arc basement in St Martin, which is believedto consist of Cretaceous to early Tertiary arc material, similarto that encountered in the Greater Antilles. *Present address: Department of Geosciences, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona 85721  相似文献

Temperature estimates and chemical composition of mantle xenoliths from the Cretaceous rift system of NW Argentina (26°S) constrain the rift evolution and chemical and physical properties of the lithospheric mantle at the eastern edge of the Cenozoic Andean plateau. The xenolith suite comprises mainly spinel lherzolite and subordinate pyroxenite and carbonatized lherzolite. The spinel lherzolite xenoliths equilibrated at high-T (most samples >1000 °C) and P below garnet-in. The Sm–Nd systematics of compositionally unzoned clino- and orthopyroxene indicate a Cretaceous minimum age for the high-T regime, i.e., the asthenosphere/lithosphere thermal boundary was at ca. 70 km depth in the Cretaceous rift. Major elements and Cr, Ni, Co and V contents of the xenoliths range between values of primitive and depleted mantle. Calculated densities based on the bulk composition of the xenoliths are <3280 kg/m3 for the estimated PT conditions and indicate a buoyant, stable upper mantle lithosphere. The well-equilibrated metamorphic fabric and mineral paragenesis with the general lack of high-T hydrous phases did not preserve traces of metasomatism in the mantle xenoliths. Late Mesozoic metasomatism, however, is obvious in the gradual enrichment of Sr, U, Th and light to medium REE and changes in the radiogenic isotope composition of an originally depleted mantle. These changes are independent of the degree of depletion evidenced by major element composition. 143Nd/144Ndi ratios of clinopyroxene from the main group of xenoliths decrease with increasing Nd content from >0.5130 (depleted samples) to ca. 0.5127 (enriched samples). 87Sr/86Sri ratios (0.7127–0.7131, depleted samples; 0.7130–0.7134, enriched samples) show no variation with variable Sr contents. Pbi isotope ratios of the enriched samples are rather radiogenic (206Pb/204Pbi 18.8–20.6, 207Pb/204Pbi 15.6–15.7, 208Pb/204Pbi 38.6–47) compared with the Pb isotope signature of the depleted samples. The large scatter and high values of 208Pb/204Pbi ratios of many xenoliths indicates at least two Pb sources that are characterized by similar U/Pb but by different Th/Pb ratios. The dominant mantle type in the investigated system is depleted mantle according to its Sr and Nd isotopic composition with relatively radiogenic Pb isotope ratios. This mantle is different from the Pacific MORB source and old subcontinental mantle from the adjacent Brazilian Shield. Its composition probably reflects material influx into the mantle wedge during various episodes of subduction that commenced in early Paleozoic or even earlier. Old subcontinental mantle was already replaced in the Paleozoic, but some inheritance from old mantle lithosphere is represented by rare xenoliths with isotope signatures indicating a Proterozoic origin.  相似文献

Laser ablation microprobe data are presented for olivine, orthopyroxeneand clinopyroxene in spinel harzburgite and lherzolite xenolithsfrom La Palma, Hierro, and Lanzarote, and new whole-rock trace-elementdata for xenoliths from Hierro and Lanzarote. The xenolithsshow evidence of strong major, trace element and Sr isotopedepletion (87Sr/86Sr 0·7027 in clinopyroxene in themost refractory harzburgites) overprinted by metasomatism. Thelow Sr isotope ratios are not compatible with the former suggestionof a mantle plume in the area during opening of the AtlanticOcean. Estimates suggest that the composition of the originaloceanic lithospheric mantle beneath the Canary Islands correspondsto the residues after 25–30% fractional melting of primordialmantle material; it is thus significantly more refractory than‘normal’ mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) mantle. Thetrace element compositions and Sr isotopic ratios of the mineralsleast affected by metasomatization indicate that the upper mantlebeneath the Canary Islands originally formed as highly refractoryoceanic lithosphere during the opening of the Atlantic Oceanin the area. During the Canarian intraplate event the uppermantle was metasomatized; the metasomatic processes includecryptic metasomatism, resetting of the Sr–Nd isotopicratios to values within the range of Canary Islands basalts,formation of minor amounts of phlogopite, and melt–wall-rockreactions. The upper mantle beneath Tenerife and La Palma isstrongly metasomatized by carbonatitic or carbonaceous meltshighly enriched in light rare earth elements (REE) relativeto heavy REE, and depleted in Zr–Hf and Ti relative toREE. In the lithospheric mantle beneath Hierro and Lanzarote,metasomatism has been relatively weak, and appears to be causedby high-Si melts producing concave-upwards trace element patternsin clinopyroxene with weak negative Zr and Ti anomalies. Ti–Al–Fe-richharzburgites/lherzolites, dunites, wehrlites and clinopyroxenitesformed from mildly alkaline basaltic melts (similar to thosethat dominate the exposed parts of the islands), and appearto be mainly restricted to magma conduits; the alkali basaltmelts have caused only local metasomatism in the mantle wall-rocksof such conduits. The various metasomatic fluids formed as theresults of immiscible separations, melt–wall-rock reactionsand chromatographic fractionation either from a CO2-rich basalticprimary melt, or, alternatively, from a basaltic and a siliceouscarbonatite or carbonaceous silicate melt. Jurassic age volcanic rocks of the Stonyford volcanic complex(SFVC) comprise three distinct petrological groups based ontheir whole-rock geochemistry: (1) oceanic tholeiites; (2) transitionalalkali basalts and glasses; (3) high-Al, low-Ti tholeiites.Major and trace element, and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic dataindicate that the oceanic tholeiites formed as low-degree partialmelts of normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (N-MORB)-source asthenospheresimilar in isotope composition to the East Pacific Rise today;the alkalic lavas were derived from an enriched source similarto that of E-MORB. The high-Al, low-Ti lavas resemble second-stagemelts of a depleted MORB-source asthenosphere that formed bymelting spinel lherzolite at low pressures. Trace element systematicsof the high-Al, low-Ti basalts show the influence of an enrichedcomponent, which overprints generally depleted trace elementcharacteristics. Tectonic discrimination diagrams show thatthe oceanic tholeiite and alkali suites are similar to present-daybasalts generated at mid-oceanic ridges. The high-Al, low-Tisuite resembles primitive arc basalts with an enriched, alkalibasalt-like overprint. Isotopic data show the influence of recycledcomponents in all three suites. The SFVC was constructed ona substrate of normal Coast Range ophiolite in an extensionalforearc setting. The close juxtaposition of the MORB-like olivinetholeiites with alkali and high-Al, low-Ti basalts suggestsderivation from a hybrid mantle source region that includedMORB-source asthenosphere, enriched oceanic asthenosphere, andthe depleted supra-subduction zone mantle wedge. We proposethat the SFVC formed in response to collision of a mid-oceanridge spreading center with the Coast Range ophiolite subductionzone. Formation of a slab window beneath the forearc duringcollision allowed the influx of ridge-derived magmas or themantle source of these magmas. Continued melting of the previouslydepleted mantle wedge above the now defunct subduction zoneproduced strongly depleted high-Al, low-Ti basalts that werepartially fertilized with enriched, alkali basalt-type meltsand slab-derived fluids. The Bonin archipelago represents an uplifted fore-arc terrainwhich exposes the products of Eocene supra-subduction zone magmatism.Chichijima, at the centre of the chain, represents the typelocality for the high-Mg andesitic lava termed boninite. Therange of extrusives which constitute the boninite series volcanicsare present on Chichijima, and are disposed in the sequenceboninite-andesite-dacite with increasing height in the volcano-stratigraphy.Progression to evolved compositions within the Chichijima boniniteseries is controlled by crystal fractionation from a boniniteparental magma containing 15% MgO. Olivine and clinoenstatiteare the initial liquidus phases, but extraction of enstatiticorthopyroxene, followed by clinopyroxene and plagioclase, isresponsible for the general evolution from boninite, throughandesite, to dacite. Some andesites within the overlying MikazukiyamaFormation are petrographically distinct from the main boniniteseries in containing magnetite phenocrysts and a high proportionof plagioclase. As such, these andesites have affinities withthe calc-alkaline series. Major and trace element data for 74 boninitic series rocks fromChichijima are presented. Although major element variation isdominantly controlled by high-level crystal fractionation, thelarge variations in incompatiable trace element concentrationsat high MgO compositions cannot be explained by this mechanism.Nd, Pb, and Sr isotopic data indicate the following: (1) a strongoverprint on 87Sr/86Sr by seawater alteration; (2) Pb isotopeslie above the northern hemisphere reference line (NHRL) andare thus similar to the <30-Ma are and basin lavas of theIzu—Bonin system, and (3) Nd(40 Ma) ranges between 2.8and 6.8 within the boninite series volcanics. Differences inrare-earth elements (REE), Zr, Ti, and 143Nd/144Nd at similardegrees of fractionation can be explained by the addition ofa component of fixed composition from the down-going oceaniccrustal slab to a variably depleted source region within theoverlying wedge. Data presented for Sm/Zr and Ti/Zr indicatethat boninite series volcanics are characterized by low valuesfor both of these ratios. In particular, boninites appear tohave uniquely low Sm/Zr ratios. These characteristics may bethe result of slab melting in the presence of residual amphibole;the resultant melt could combine with typical slab dehydrationfluids and infiltrate the overlying mantle wedge. Such a fluid—meltcomponent could mix either with shallow mantle or directly withprimitive melts from depleted mantle. Trace elements, REE, andisotope data thus point to a model for boninite genesis whichrequires tightly constrained pressure—temperature conditionsin the slab combined with melting of a variably depleted sourcein the overlying wedge. Such constraints are rarely met exceptduring the subduction of juvenile oceanic crust beneath a young,hot overriding plate.  相似文献

Late Neoarchean metavolcanic rocks are widely distributed in the Western Shandong Terrane (WST). They are classified as ~2590–2580 Ma tholeiites (Group MB-1), ~2550–2530 Ma tholeiites (Group MB-2), calc-alkaline basalts (Group MB-3), high-Si adakites (Group MAD) and ~2520–2500 Ma tholeiites (Group MB-4) based on zircon U-Pb chronological and geochemical data. Their parental magmas have complex origins and were derived from a depleted mantle wedge enriched by slab-derived melts or fluids (Group MB-1); an unaltered depleted mantle (Group MB-2); the delaminated lower crustal materials (Group MAD); a strongly melt- and fluid-metasomatized depleted mantle (Group MB-3); and a fluid- and sediment-metasomatized asthenospheric mantle (Group MB-4). The late Neoarchean geodynamic evolution of the WST revealed by these multi-genetic volcanic rocks can be summarized as follows: (1) an ~2.62–2.53 Ga eastward subduction operated along the ancient continental margin, followed by delamination of unstable continental lithosphere in the back-arc region during ~2.60–2.53 Ga; and (2) delamination-derived mantle magmas ascended and caused the regional extension, further inducing the asthenosphere to passively rise and the back-arc basin to open during ~2.52–2.50 Ga. The above intense mantle magmatism and crust-mantle interactions have consumed abundant mantle energy and facilitated the continental stratification and final cratonization of the WST.  相似文献

The Kudi ophiolite in the western Kunlun Mountains comprises harzburgites, dunites, cumulate dunites, cumulate pyroxenites and gabbros, diabase dikes, and pillow and massive lavas, and are fragments of a supra-subduction zone (SSZ) ophiolite from the Early Paleozoic. The extrusive rocks can be classified into three groups of tholeiites: back-arc basin (BAB) tholeiites, low-Ti island arc tholeiites (IAT), and LREE-enriched IAT, as shown by their distinctive geochemical characteristics. The SSZ-type mantle peridotites, the cumulate complex with arc tholeiite affinity, and BABB-type diabase dikes and basalts constitute an upper mantle and crustal section of a back-arc basin formed by coupling of MORB-type mantle upwelling with fluid efflux from slab devolatilization. The low-Ti IAT are characterized by low Ti and HFSE, and slightly U-shaped or LREE-depleted chondrite-normalized REE patterns, and represent melts derived from a depleted mantle source region (extraction of BABB magma) modified compositionally by fluids and/or melts from the subducting lithospheric slab during propagation and extension of the back-arc basin. We interpret the LREE-enriched IAT as products of closure of the back-arc basin because an interaction between the parental magma of this IAT and the mantle peridotites (formerly the upper mantle of the basin) in a newly formed mantle wedge had occurred.

A series of Lower Carboniferous volcanic rocks occur in the Hatu, Darbut, and Baogutu areas of Xinjiang Province. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) zircon U–Pb isotopic data indicate that two samples of these rocks coevally erupted at 324.0 ± 2.8 Ma and 324.9 ± 3.4 Ma. Three detailed profile measurements show that the volcanics include the Hatu basalt, the Baogutu andesite and dacite, and the Darbut andesite. Whole-rock compositions suggest that the Hatu volcanics are tholeiites and have a mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB)-like signature with a small negative Nb anomaly, suggesting formation in a back-arc basin. Their isotopic compositions (?Nd(t) = +2.2 to +4.0, (87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.70414 to 0.70517) suggest a mixing origin from depleted to enriched mantle sources. In contrast, the Baogutu and Darbut rocks are andesite and dacite possessing a transitional tholeiite to calc–alkaline character and have E-MORB-like and OIB signatures, with a marked negative Nb anomaly and Th/Yb-enrichment, indicating that they were generated in a subduction zone setting. Isotopically, they display consistently depleted Sr–Nd isotopic compositions [(87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.70377–0.70469, ?Nd(t) = 1.0–5.2], suggesting that they were derived from a depleted mantle, and that fluid and sediments were involved in their petrogenesis. These features suggest that an early Carboniferous intra-oceanic arc and back-arc basin system generated the studied volcanic units in the West Junggar.  相似文献
