A guided wave along a borehole is often observed in borehole radar measurements. These guided waves deform the antenna pattern and can cause artefacts in radar measurements. A water-filled borehole or a conducting logging cable can function as a waveguide for electromagnetic waves under some conditions. We describe the theoretical characteristics of such a guided wave in a borehole and compare them with our experiments. The measured signal discussed was obtained with a directional borehole radar. This radar uses a cylindrical conformal array antenna as receiver and is a model of a conducting structure in a borehole. The induced field around the borehole was compared with the theory. The most fundamental symmetrical and asymmetrical modes were TM01 and HE11, and they were identified in the measured signals using time–frequency distribution analysis and by observation of the azimuthal field distribution of the magnetic field.  相似文献

In this paper we describe the transport of pollution in groundwater in the neighbourhood of a well in a uniform background flow. We compute the rate at which contaminated particles reach the well as a function of the place of the source of pollution. The motion of a particle in a dispersive flow is seen as a random walk process. The Fokker-Planck equation for the random motion of a particle is transformed using the complex potential for the advective flow field. The resulting equation is solved asymptotically after a stretching transformation. Finally, the analytical solution is compared with results from Monte Carlo simulations with the random walk model. The method can be extended to arbitrary flow fields. Then by a numerical coordinate transformation the analytical results can still be employed.  相似文献

This paper addresses the horizontal vibration of a rigid disk embedded in a poroelastic half-space in contact with a fluid half-space using the poroelastic theory of potentials. The solution of this problem is expressed in terms of dual integral equations that are converted into Fredholm integral equations of the second kind and solved numerically. Selected numerical results for the horizontal dynamic impedance coefficient are examined based on different poroelastic materials, embedment depths, and excitation frequencies; furthermore, the results are analyzed for the cases in which there is and is no fluid overlying the poroelastic medium to examine the effect of fluid. The results of this study are helpful for designing a foundation embedded in the seabed due to dynamic horizontal forces.  相似文献

Summary The problem of electromagnetic induction in a half-space with a cylindrical inhomogeneity is treated. Solutions for TE and TM polarization of the exciting electromagnetic field are given, which can be used for computing sounding and profiling curves. The anisotropy of the surface impedance is pointed out, as well as a whole series of other interesting properties of the magnetotelluric field in this model; some of them are also demonstrated on the computed theoretical curves.  相似文献

Summary The problem of diffraction of compressional waves by a rigid barrier of finite height fixed in a liquid half space has been studied. Wiener-Hopf technique forms the basis of the methods used to solve the problem. Exact solutions have been obtained in terms of Fourier integrals whose evaluation along an appropriate contour gives the transmitted, reflected and diffracted waves. The diffracted waves decay rapidly away from the barrier.  相似文献

Abstract

we report the results of experiments on the spin-up of two layers of immiscible fluid with a free upper surface in a rotating cylinder over a wide range of internal Froude numbers. Observations of the evolution of the velocity field by particle tracking indicates that spin-up of the azimuthal velocity in the upper layer take much longer than in a homogeneous fluid. Initially, spin-up occurs at a rate comparable to that of homogeneous fluid but, at high internal Froude number, a second phase follows in which the remaining lative motion decays much more slowly. Quantitative comparison of these measurements to the theory of Pedlosky (1967) shows good agreement.

Visualization of the interface displacement during spin-up detected the presence of transient azimuthal variations in the interface elevation over a wide range of Froude (F), Ekman (E), and Rossby (ε) number. nalysis of the occurrence of the asymmetric variations using the parameter space (Q, F), where Q = E 1/2/ε, suggested by the baroclinic instability theory and experiments of Hart (1972), showed that the flow was stable for Q > 0.06 with no discernable dependence on F. This result, together with the prediction of Pedlosky's theory that radial gradient of potential vorticity in the two layers have opposite signs, suggests at the baroclinic instability mechanism was responsible for the asymmetries. The location and timing of these instabilities may account for the discrepancies between the observations and the Pedlosky (1967) theory.  相似文献

Measurements of micrometeorological variables were made for a complete annual cycle using an automatic weather station and two energy budget–Bowen ratio systems at a field site adjacent to the Santa Cruz River in southern Arizona. These data were used to provide the basis of an estimate of the evaporation from a one-mile long losing reach of a riparian corridor in this semi-arid environment. A remotely sensed map of vegetation cover was used to stratify the corridor into five categories of surface cover. The total evaporation was calculated as the area-weighted average of the measured evaporation for sampled areas of the two most common covers, and appropriate estimates of evaporation for the less common covers. Measurements showed a substantial, seasonally dependent evaporation from the taller, deep-rooted riparian cover in the study reach, while the short, sparse vegetation provided little evaporation. In terms of the volume of water evaporated from the study reach, the evaporation from irrigated agriculture accounts for almost half of the total loss, while the majority of the remaining evaporation is from the taller riparian vegetation covers, with about one-quarter of the total loss estimated as coming from obligatory phreatophytes, primarily cottonwood. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Summary In this paper the displacement components due to a compressional point source in a layered half-space consisting of a liquid layer of finite thickness overlying a semi-infinite solid homogeneous medium have been deduced. Two different cases have been considered. In the first case the source is taken in the liquid layer and in the second case the source is taken in the solid layer. The displacement components in cylindrical coordinates have been obtained in closed form in detail at the interface for all values of distance from the source for the second case.  相似文献

We have derived an analytical solution for two-region flow toward a well in a confined aquifer based on a linearization method. The two-region flow includes Izbash non-Darcian flow near the well and Darcian flow in the rest of the aquifer. The wellbore storage is also considered. The type curves in the non-Darcian and Darcian flow domains are obtained by a numerical Laplace inversion method incorporated in MATLAB programs. We have compared our results with the one-region Darcian flow model (Theis). Our solutions agree with those of Sen [Sen Z. Type curves for two-region well flow. J Hydr Eng 1988;114(12):1461–84] which were obtained using the Boltzmann transform at late times for fully turbulent flow, while some difference has been found at early and moderate times. We have defined a dimensionless non-Darcian hydraulic conductivity term which is shown to be a key parameter for analyzing the two-region flow. A smaller dimensionless non-Darcian hydraulic conductivity results in a larger drawdown in the non-Darcian flow region at late times. However, the dimensionless non-Darcian hydraulic conductivity does not affect the slope of the dimensionless drawdown versus the logarithmic dimensionless time in the non-Darcian flow region at late times. The dimensionless non-Darcian hydraulic conductivity does not affect the late time drawdown in the Darcian flow region.  相似文献

Thermal convection in a fluid-filled gap between the two corotating, concentric cylindrical sidewalls with sloping curved ends driven by radial buoyancy was first studied by Busse (Busse, F.H., "Thermal instabilities in rapidly rotating systems", J. Fluid Mech . 44 , 441-460 (1970)). The annulus model captures the key features of rotating convection in full spherical geometry and has been widely employed to study convection, magnetoconvection and dynamos in planetary systems, usually in connection with the small-gap approximation neglecting the effect of azimuthal curvature of the annulus. This article investigates nonlinear thermal convection in a rotating annulus with a finite gap through numerical simulations of the full set of nonlinear convection equations. Three representative cases are investigated in detail: a large-gap annulus with the ratio of the radii ( s i and s o ) of the sidewalls ξ = s i / o s = 0.1, a medium-gap annulus with ξ = 0.35 and a small-gap annulus with ξ = 0.8. Near the onset of convection, the effect of rapid rotation through the sloping ends forces the first (Hopf) bifurcation in the form of small-scale, steadily drifting rolls (thermal Rossby waves). At moderately large Rayleigh numbers, a variety of different convection patterns are found, including mixed-mode steadily drifting, quasi-periodic (vacillating) and temporally chaotic convection in association with various temporal and spatial symmetry-breaking bifurcations. Our extensive simulations suggest that competition between nonlinear and rotational effects with increasing Rayleigh number leads to an unusual sequence of bifurcation characterized by enlarging the spatial scale of convection.  相似文献

An indirect boundary-method formulation to obtain the three-dimensional response of an infinitely long canyon of uniform but arbitrary cross-section cut in a layered viscoelastic half-space is presented. Seismic excitation in the form of plane elastic waves acting at an arbitrary angle with respect to the axis of the canyon is considered. Numerical results for SH-, SV- and P-wave excitation of a circular canyon and of a canyon with a topography similar to that in the vicinity of Pacoima Dam are discussed in some detail.  相似文献

The integral equation for the electromagnetic response of a sphere in a layered medium may be solved as follows. First, the unknown time harmonic electric field in the sphere is expanded in spherical vector waves. Secondly, the coefficients for these wave functions are found by a set of equations. The equations are found by multiplying the integral equation throughout by each wave function and integrating over the spherical conductor.Once the unknown coefficients have been determined, then the transient response may be found by taking the inverse Fourier transform. In carrying out the Fourier transform one learns that for most of the time range used in prospecting, only the lowest order vector wave function is significant. A study of the singularities of the spectrum of the transient shows that, for the time range considered, only a single branch cut is significant. There are no pole type responses. That is, the field does not decay exponentially. Previous studies of a sphere in free space reported only pole type responses. That is, at the later stages, the field decays exponentially. This study shows that, in order to model satisfactorily the effect of the host rock on transient electromagnetic fields, the sphere must be placed in layered ground.  相似文献

An opportunity to study the effect of a bushfire on the hydrology of a forested catchment was presented when a bushfire burned through an area of approximately 280 square miles in the Snowy Mountains region of south-eastern New South Wales, Australia, in March 1965. The effect of the fire upon the hydrologic characteristics of two catchments for which streamflow records were available before and after the fire was examined and it was shown that:

— Using a set of well-known results for the seismic field radiated by a simple dip-slip dislocation in a half space, we study interesting details of the motion at the surface of the half space. The static solution for a dislocation in a half space was found by Freund and Barnett in 1976. The corresponding elastodynamic solution was solved exactly in the Fourier and Laplace domain by several authors about 20 years ago, however its properties remained unexplored because of analytical difficulties. We remove these difficulties and show that the solution contains three important phenomena: Seismic wave fronts of P, S and SP type; the near-field pulse associated with the propagation of the dislocation front; and the long-time elastic response that converges toward the static solution of Freund and Barnett. Based on these results we show that solutions to all these problems are self-similar and homogeneous in x/h and αt/h so that when the fault depth h approaches 0, the solutions become concentrated near the origin and around the P, S and surface wave travel times. This explains several paradoxes in the radiation from dip-slip faults; among these the most notable are the presence of a point force singularity at the tip of a surface breaking fault and the reduction in high frequency radiation near the surface.  相似文献

Inflow to a tunnel is a great public concern and is closely related to groundwater hydrology, geotechnical engineering, and mining engineering, among other disciplines. Rapid computation of inflow to a tunnel provides a timely means for quickly assessing the inflow discharge, thus is critical for safe operation of tunnels. Dewatering of tunnels is another engineering practice that should be planned. In this study, an analytical solution of the inflow to a tunnel in a fractured unconfined aquifer is obtained. The solution takes into account either the spherical or slab-shaped matrix block and the unsteady state interporosity flow. The instantaneous drainage water table and anisotropic hydraulic conductivities of the fractures network are also considered. Both uniform flux and uniform head boundary condition are considered to simulate the constant head boundary condition in the tunnel. The effects of the hydraulic parameters of the fractured aquifer on the inflow variation of the tunnel are explored. The application of the presented solution to obtain the optimum location and discharge of the well to minimize the inflow to a tunnel is illustrated.  相似文献

A physical, chemical and biological characterization of river systems is needed to evaluate their ecological quality and support restoration programs. Herein, we describe an approach using water chemistry, physical structure and land use for identification of a disturbance gradient existing in the Karun River Basin. For this purpose, at each site, physical structure and physico-chemical data were collected once in each season for a total of 4 samples during the period (October 2018 - September 2019). Principal components analysis (PCA) of 17 variables identified five variables that were influential across all seasons: conductivity, total habitat score, stream morphology, clay & silt, and sand. Of the 54 sites, 14, 26 and 14 sites were classified as least, moderate and most disturbed sites, respectively. The metric Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT) taxa was used for validation of the classification. Results in different seasons showed that all the least disturbed sites (n = 14) were significantly different from moderate and most disturbed sites (p < 0.01). In this study the validation process presented good confirmation of a priori reference sites selection, showing that the proposed criteria could be considered as appropriate tools for characterization of the existent disturbance gradient in the Karun River Basin.  相似文献

Streamflow response in Boreal Plains catchments depends on hydrological connectivity between forested uplands, lakes, and peatlands, and their hydrogeomorphic setting. Expected future drying of the Boreal Plains ecozone is expected to reduce hydrological connectivity of landscape units. To better understand run‐off generation during dry periods, we determined whether peatland and groundwater connectivity can dampen expected future water deficits in forests and lakes. We studied Pine Fen Creek catchment in the Boreal Plains ecozone of central Saskatchewan, Canada, which has a large, valley‐bottom, terminally positioned peatland, two lakes, and forested uplands. A shorter intensive study permitted a more detailed partitioning of water inputs and outputs within the catchment during the low flow period, and an assessment of a 10‐year data set provided insight into the function of the peatland over a range of climate conditions. Using a water balance approach, we learned that two key processes regulate flow of Pine Fen Creek. The cumulative impact of landscape unit hydrological connectivity and the peatland's hydrological functional state were needed to understand catchment response. There was evidence of a run‐off threshold which, when crossed, changed the peatland's hydrological function from transmission to run‐off generation. Results also suggest the peatland should behave more often as a transmitter of groundwater than as a generator of run‐off under a drier climate future, owing to a reduced water supply.  相似文献
