Peatland testate amoebae are widely used to reconstruct paleohydrological/climatic changes, but many species are also known to respond to pollutants. Peatlands around the world have been exposed to anthropogenic and intermittent natural pollution through the late Holocene. This raises the question: can pollution lead to changes in the testate amoeba paleoecological record that could be erroneously interpreted as a climatic change? To address this issue we applied testate amoeba transfer functions to the results of experiments adding pollutants (N, P, S, Pb, O3) to peatlands and similar ecosystems. We found a significant effect in only one case, an experiment in which N and P were added, suggesting that pollution-induced biases are limited. However, we caution researchers to be aware of this possibility when interpreting paleoecological records. Studies characterising the paleoecological response to pollution allow pollution impacts to be tracked and distinguished from climate change.  相似文献

The present study is an attempt to assess the impact of a saline waste lagoon on the near subsurface through electrical resistivity tomography (ERT). Resistivity and IP imaging data have been collected on profiles close to the lagoon and at a far off location (control location). Water samples have been collected from the lagoon and a municipality drinking well close to it and analysed for the water chemistry. The geoelectrical sections indicate very low resistivity formations in the near subsurface in the vicinity of the lagoon as compared to the control profile. The water chemistry data from the monitoring well close to the profile also indicates very high total dissolved solids (8658 mg/L) and qualitatively supports the contamination of the near subsurface. The conductive formations in the vicinity of the lagoon can be attributed to the overflow from the lagoon or the seepage.  相似文献

It is estimated that the poisonous heavy metals released to the environment come up to million tons. Such great amounts of poisonous heavy metals result in a serious bane to ecosystem and human health. The valid control of spreading and pollution of heavy metals in the environment has hence become an urgent issue of the moment. In this study, through tameness and induction of living creature's tolerance from dirty mud, using microbial technology we have cultivated some anti-heavy-metal microbes able to resist the pollutions from poisonous chemical elements such as arsenic, chromium, cadmium, hydrargyrum, and plumbnm, four of which are fungi and five are bacteria. Atomic absorption spectroscopy and atomic fluorescence spectrophotometry analyses showed that, to the same chemical element, fungi have stronger resistance than bacteria by one time or so.  相似文献

With economic development and living standard improvement, livestock and poultry production has grown up rapidly, also has become the leading source of pollution in vast rural areas in China.The estimated annual loss amount of COD, BOD, NH3-N from manure in 2001 is 7.28 million ton, 4.99 million ton and 1.32 million ton, respectively. The COD loss amount from manure is close to the sum of COD from industrial and domestic wastewater. Because animal waste and wastewater can enter water bodies from spills or breaks of waste storage structures ( due to accidents or excessive rain) , and non-agricultural application of manure to cropland, this contamination has resulted in quality degradation of surface and underground drinking water supplies. Areas with concentrated livestock operations are showing elevated nutrients and organic pollutant contents in surface waters. This widespread contamination of water has prompted governments at various levels to adopt regulations and measures to control the spreading of livestock pollution.  相似文献

The River Ganges being the most sacred river and lifeline to millions of Indians in serving their water requirements is facing excessive threat of pollution. Under various river management and conservation strategies for its protection, the assessment of water quality of its main tributary Ramganga River is lacking. This study focuses on assessment of physicochemical and heavy metal pollution of the Ramganga River by application of multivariate statistical techniques. Sampling of Ramganga River at sixteen sampling sites was carried out in three seasons (summer, monsoon and winter) of 2014. The collected water samples were analyzed for physicochemical parameters and heavy metals. Results from cluster analysis (CA) of the data divided the whole stretch of the river into three clusters as elevation from 1304 to 259 m as less polluted, from 207 to 154 m as moderately polluted and from elevation 154 to 139 m as high-polluted stretches with anthropogenic as main sources of pollution in high-polluted stretch. Principal component analysis of the seasonal dataset resulted in three significant principal components (PC) in each season explaining 72–8% of total variance with strong loadings (>0.75) of PC1 on fluoride (F?), chloride (Cl?), sodium (Na+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), bicarbonate (HCO3 ?), total dissolved solids and electrical conductivity. Temporal variation by one-way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) showed significant seasonal variation was in the pH, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, turbidity, HCO3 ?, F?, Zn, cadmium (Cd) and Mn (p < 0.05). Turbidity showed approximately a twofold increase in monsoon season due to rainfall in the catchment area and subsequent flow of runoff into the river. Concentration of HCO3 ?, F? and pH also showed similar increase in monsoon. The concentration of Zn, Cd and Mn showed an increasing trend in summers compared to monsoon and winter season due to dilution effect in the monsoon season and its lasting effect in winters.  相似文献

Lead isotope ratios were used to trace the origin of Pb in a soil–plant (Urtica dioica)–snail (Cepaea nemoralis) food chain in two polluted locations in the floodplains of the rivers Meuse and Rhine (Biesbosch National Park) and one reference location in the Netherlands. Lead isotope ratios and concentrations were determined in soil, litter, plant leaves, snails, rainwater and airborne particulate matter. Anthropogenic Pb in the soils of all locations was found to be derived from deposition of Pb polluted river sediments. Discharging rivers influenced the reference location before being reclaimed from the sea. The river sediment contains anthropogenic Pb from various sources related to industrial activities in the hinterland of the rivers Meuse and Rhine. Lead in the atmosphere contributed substantially to Pb pollution and Pb transfer in plant leaves and snails in all locations. Lead pollution in plant leaves and snails can be explained from a mixture of river sediment-Pb and atmospheric Pb from various transfer routes that involve low concentrations.  相似文献

This work was carried out in order to study the impact of car body repair activities in Bouzaréah City (suburban area located at the plateau of Algiers) on the air quality. Atmospheric particulate matter was targeted using high-volume sampler. Precisely, the particulate organic matter such as organophosphate esters, especially triphenyl phosphate and tributyl phosphate, was evaluated by the implementation of accelerated solvent extraction. The results of the major extractable organic components revealed that tributyl phosphate and triphenyl phosphate were found at 5.46 and 1.78 ng m?3, respectively. On the other hand, the classical pollutants such as n-alkanes, n-alkanoic monocarboxylic acids and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were also measured, respectively, at average total concentrations of 35.8, 107.4 and 9.8 ng m?3. This work confirms that sanding and painting car bodies may contribute to air pollution, especially after detection of diethylnitrosamine which remains the most surprising compound in the particulate matter due to its volatility and can be considered as emerging contaminant.  相似文献

The influence of emissions of an active volcano on the composition of nanoparticles and ultrafine road dust was identified in an urban area of the Andes.Although many cities are close to active volcanoes,few studies have evaluated their influence in road dust composition.Air quality in urban areas is significantly affected by nonexhaust emissions(e.g.road dust,brake wear,tire wear),however,natural sources such as volcanoes also impact the chemical composition of the particles.In this study,elements from volcanic emissions such as Si>Al>Fe>Ca>K>Mg,and Si-Al with K were identified as complex hydrates.Similarly,As,Hg,Cd,Pb,As,H,Cd,Pb,V,and salammoniac were observed in nanoparticles and ultrafine material.Mineral composition was detected in the order of quartz>mullite>calcite>kaolinite>illite>goethite>magnetite>zircon>monazite,in addition to salammoniac,a tracer of volcanic sources.The foregoing analysis reflects the importance of carrying out more studies relating the influence of volcanic emissions in road dust in order to protect human health.The road dust load(RD10)ranged between 0.8 and 26.8 mg m?2in the city.  相似文献

Through systematic sampling and analysis of water and soil in the planning area of Langfang City, employing national environmental quality standards, the qualities of groundwater and surface-water was overall evaluated. On the whole, the quality of deep-level groundwater was better and hazardous substances were not superstandard, F is higher, Fe and Mg was superstandard in several sites. The quality of shallow groundwater was general worse and COD, Fe, Mn, NH4^+-N, F, total hardness, total dissolved solids etc. overstep drinking water standard; the quality of surface water was worst and many indices were evidently higher, which was very worst in the east of downtown. Main pollution way of water body was lixiviation type of primary pollution groundwater and infiltration type of secondary pollution groundwater. Environmental quality assessment of plough layer soil indicated that it was better in the northwest and worse in the southeast, furthermore from Xiwu, Daguanzhang, Zhougezhuang to Pengzhuang, Dazhaolin and the north of Jingshan railroad, the environmental quality is worst.  相似文献

 In the present paper, an environmental analysis of Manikpur area, Korba coalfield, Bilaspur, M.P., India is undertaken. The area lies in the Geological Survey of India Toposheet no. 64J/11 Latitude 82°42′54″–82°45′10″ North; Longitude 22°18′46″–22°19′46″ East. The paper deals with pollution and its control measures through the natural plants found in the vicinity of the coalmines, namely Mangifera indica, Eucalyptus spp., Cassia siamea, Delbergia sissoo, etc. The plants control the Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM), Nitrous Oxides (NOx), Sulphur Oxides (SOx) of the mines and mining site. Mining industry is one of the most important economical activities of Latin America, where As, Pb and Cd are commonly associated with the extraction of precious and base metals. Mining activities become a source of contamination if control measures are not adapted to avoid the pollution of soils by these potentially toxic elements (PTE) for the human, because they have the capacity to produce damage to the DNA generating a genomic instability in the individual and this directly can lead to the development of chronic diseases like cancer. The considered population of greater risk is the infantile since they have an exceptional vulnerability to the acute or chronic effects of environmental toxics and in addition have a higher susceptibility to these PTE compared with the adults. For that reason, it is assumed that the infantile population exposed to soil contaminated by the mixture of As, Pb and Cd, has damage in the DNA of its cells and this provokes a greater susceptibility to develop neoplasics processes or other environmental diseases. Individual sensitivity to the cytogenetics effects produced by the polluting agents or their metabolites is based on the differences in the magnitude of the repair systems induction, reason why it is necessary to determine the genotoxicity in exposed children by means of the evaluation of a damage biomarker that allows to establish a biological meaning to predict the adverse effects in health.  相似文献

Based on the mercury distribution in soil, atmosphere and plant in seven sections beside the trunk road, some advances are obtained: (1) Mercury content of fuel oil of petrol station in Guilin is 3.66-9.74 ng/g, higher than that reported by other countries (0.7-3.2 ng/g). The higher the number of petrol, the lower the content. Number 90 petrol widely used is the highest (9.74 ng/g). (2) Mercury content in soil is commonly 0.30-0.80 μg/g near the road, (0.30-2.60 μg/g) besides the street, both are higher than the average of Guilin background value (0.204 μg/g). Mercury content in vegetable near the road is generally 0.025-0.055 μg/g, higher than that far away from the road (0.022-0.038 μg/g). The content in cinnamon leaves on both sides of the street is 0.06-0.16 μg/g, also higher than that far away from the street (0.051-0.067 μg/g). Guilin Highway atmospheric mercury content is usually 7-12 ng/m^3, higher than the mean background value (4.4-6.6 ng/m^3). Atmospheric mercury content near rural roads is below the level on urban roads. The atmospheric mercury content increases apparently in traffic-intensive stations and intersections. (3) The average concentration of mercury in vegetables is mostly 0.025-0.055 μg/g. Mercury content in various tissues of vegetable follows the order of leaves (mostly 0.044).09 μg/g)〉roots (mostly 0.02-0.05 lag/g)〉stems (mostly 0.01-0.04 μg/g). (4) The distribution of mercury in soil, plants and atmosphere near the road is of certain similarity, with a single peak, nearly symmetrical. As far away from road, the content reduces gradually, which shows the release of exhaust gas mercury is the main source of atmospheric mercury pollution.  相似文献

Pollution caused by tailings has become a serious environmental problem in China. An attempt was made to establish the ground penetrating radar (GPR) as a quick and non-destructive method for soil pollution analysis. Some physical models were established of contaminated soils from the tailing area. A series of indoor GPR experiments were conducted with 1 GHz antenna. The interface of contaminated area and uncontaminated area is characterized as a saltation zone in the radar image. The results of experiments show a clear correlation between the GPR data and the pollution intensity of soil. Based on all experimental data, the relation of velocity of electromagnetic wave propagation and pollution intensity was induced by using artificial neural network (ANN). The results obtained indicate that GPR can provide high-resolution estimates of soil pollution variations around tailings as a function of depth as well as space and time.  相似文献

The study area is in the southeastern part of the city of Elaz between 38°17–38°43 latitudes and 38°36–39°07 longitudes. Formations of Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic age comprise confined and unconfined aquifers. Unconfined aquifers are represented by Na-Cl and Na-HCO3 type waters while confined aquifers are characterized by Ca-HCO3, Mg-HCO3 and Na-HCO3 type waters. Due to sodium pollution, as a result of irrigation from waters of Hazar lake in the plain, as well as intense use of artificial fertilizer and improper storage of animal fertilizers, NH4-N, NO3-N and total PO4-P pollution are detected in waters of the unconfined aquifer. Organic material contents in waters of well nos. S27, S29 and S32 completed in the unconfined aquifer are above 3.5 mg/l of Turkish Standard Institute (TSE), (266) standard. In confined aquifers, total PO4-P pollution in four wells and NH4-N pollution in three wells were observed to be above the TSE (266) standard.  相似文献

The purpose of this work was to study the risks of water pollution due to the use of mixtures containing wood ash and sewage sludge. Mixtures including sludge and ash may be recycled as fertilizers, and they are economical as they do not integrate commercial limes, but Escherichia coli counts may keep significantly high in such mixtures, because their pH is not alkaline enough. In view of that, it seems interesting to study the E. coli survival in lixiviate from ash?Csludge mixtures including limes rather than from ash?Csludge mixtures alone. Two kinds of experiments were performed using laboratory column trials under saturated flow conditions. The first experiment investigated the chemical leaching behaviour of a mixture of 70% timber-industry wood ashes and 30% urban sewage sludge (% dry weight) at doses equivalent to 10 and 30?Mg/ha. The second experiment studied the survival of E. coli in lixiviates generated from 30?Mg/ha of a mixture consisting in 75% wood ash, 20% sewage sludge and 5% quicklime (% dry weight). In the first experiment, admixture of the ash and sludge achieved a stabilization of elements such as aluminium, iron, magnesium, nickle, carbon monoxide, cadmium, chromium and molybdenum that reduced their solubility compared with that in the ash or sludge alone. Significant solubilisation of heavy metals was not observed, with overall minor risk of chemical water pollution. In the second experiment, although including quicklime E. coli counts were still detected in the lixiviate, indicating risk of water contamination.  相似文献
