As a consequence of the Taylor–Proudman balance, a balance between the pressure, Coriolis and buoyancy forces in the radial and latitudinal momentum equations (that is expected to be amply satisfied in the lower solar convection zone), the superadiabatic gradient is determined by the rotation law and by an unspecified function of r, say, S(r), where r is the radial coordinate. If the rotation law and S(r) are known, then the solution of the energy equation, performed in this paper in the framework of the ML formalism, leads to a knowledge of the Reynolds stresses, convective fluxes, and meridional motions. The ML-formalism is an extension of the mixing length theory to rotating convection zones, and the calculations also involve the azimuthal momentum equation, from which an expression for the meridional motions in terms of the Reynolds stresses can be derived. The meridional motions are expanded as U r(r,)=P 2(cos)2(r)/r 2+P 4(cos)4(r)/r 2 +..., and a corresponding equation for U (r,). Here is the polar angle, is the density, and P 2(cos), P 4(cos) are Legendre polynomials. A good approximation to the meridional motion is obtained by setting 4(r)=–H2(r) with H–1.6, a constant. The value of 2(r) is negative, i.e., the P 2 flow rises at the equator and sinks at the poles. For the value of H obtained in the numerical calculations, the meridional motions have a narrow countercell at the poles, and the convective flux has a relative maximum at the poles, a minimum at mid latitudes and a larger maximum at the equator. Both results are in agreement with the observations.  相似文献

We present some results of new calculations ofD(t)-the second derivative of the Moon's elongation as a function of time. The paper contains an explanation of the well-known R. Newton's effecthe rapid decline inD(t) from about 700 yr to about 1300 yr. The new graph ofD is based on the revised dates of the ancient eclipses and has a qualitatively different character; in particular, the decline inD(t) vanishes completely andD(t) oscillates at a roughly constant value, which coincides with the modern one. This fact agrees with the independent chronological results in the author's [7] paper.  相似文献

This contribution deals with the properties of small-scale magnetic elements at the polar caps of the Sun. Spectro-polarimetric observations, obtained with high spatial resolution with the Gregory Coudé Telescope at the Observatorio del Teide on Tenerife, were analysed. We find, though with limited data sets, that polar faculae differ in two aspects from faculae of the network in non-active regions near the equator (equatorial faculae): (1) Polar faculae appear to have the same magnetic polarity as the general polar magnetic field. Presumably, the latter is rooted in the small-scale faculae. The equatorial faculae show both magnetic polarities. (2) Polar faculae, with a size of 3.5 ± 1.3, are larger than equatorial faculae with 2.1 ± 0.4. Yet as for equatorial faculae, polar faculae possess kilogauss magnetic fields.  相似文献

We have measured the contrast of solar faculae near the limb on direct digital video images made with the 65 cm vacuum reflector at the Big Bear Solar Observatory. We used six broad band filters with different wavelengths from red to violet. The range of heliocentric angle covered in our measurements is 0.05 < = cos < 0.4 ( = 87°–66°). About 300 images were measured from observations made during the summers of 1983 and 1985. Over 20000 faculae were measured.By averaging the contrasts of faculae and plotting them vs heliocentric angle, we found that contrast increases monotonically towards the limb for the shorter wavelengths; for longer wavelengths, contrast has a tendency to peak around = 0.15, and then decrease towards the extreme limb. The contrast increases as wavelength decreases.  相似文献

Using the flux-transport equation in the absence of sources, we study the relation between a highly peaked polar magnetic field and the poleward meridional flow that concentrates it. If the maximum flow speed m greatly exceeds the effective diffusion speed /R, then the field has a quasi-equilibrium configuration in which the poleward convection of flux via meridional flow approximately balances the equatorward spreading via supergranular diffusion. In this case, the flow speed () and the magnetic field B() are related by the steady-state approximation () (/R)B()/B() over a wide range of colatitudes from the poles to midlatitudes. In particular, a general flow profile of the form sin p cos q which peaks near the equator (q p) will correspond to a cos n magnetic field at high latitudes only if p = 1 and m = n /R. Recent measurements of n 8 and 600 km2 s–1 would then give m 7 m s–1.  相似文献

The velocity field has been mapped for 42 min in an area 80 by 85 containing a unipolar sunspot. Apparent shifts of Fe i 5233 were measured photoelectrically using a rectangular scanning aperture 1.6 × 4.0. The sunspot did not exert a marked influence on the generally random pattern of oscillations at a period of 300 s. Discrete periods of oscillation both longer and shorter than 300 s were excited within the enhanced magnetic field boundaries of this spot. Umbral oscillations at periods near 180 s were detected in agreement with independent observations of the same spot during the previous solar rotation.NRC Postdoctoral Fellow, 1969–71.  相似文献

The implications of the intrinsic luminosity evolution with cosmological epoch on the value of the density parameter () and evolution of radio sizes of extragalactic radio sources have been considered. It is shown that a power law evolution model of the sortP (1 +z) can be used to contrain the value of . In the presence of a strong luminosity evolution, the model yields an upper limit of 0.5.It is also shown that the angular diameter redshift ( – z) relation for quasars can be interpreted in terms of the assumed luminosity evolution combined with a luminosity-linear size correlation with little or no linear size evolution required. On the other hand, strong linear size evolution is needed to explain the – z data for radio galaxies independent of luminosity.  相似文献

A semi-continuous hierarchy, (i.e., one in which there are galaxies outside clusters, clusters outside superclusters etc.), is examined using an expression of the field equations of general relativity in a form due to Podurets, Misner and Sharp. It is shown (a) that for a sufficiently populous hierarchy, the thinning factor( i+1/ i [r i /r i+1] is approximately equal to the exponentN in a continuous density law (=aR –N) provided (r i /r i+1)3-1; (b) that a hierarchical Universe will not look decidedly asymmetric to an observer like a human being because such salient observers live close to the densest elements of the hierarchy (viz stars), the probability of the Universe looking spherically symmetric (dipole anisotropy0.1 to such an observer being of order unity; (c) the existence of a semi-continuous or continuous hierarchy (Peebles) requires that 2 if galaxies, not presently bound to clusters were once members of such systems; (d) there are now in existence no less than ten arguments for believing 2, though recent number counts by Sandageet al. seem to be in contradiction to such a value; (e) Hubble's law, withH independent of distance, can be proved approximately in a relativistic hierarchy provided (i)N=2, (ii)2GM(R)/c 2 R1; (iii)Rc (iv)M0 in a system of massM, sizeR (f) Hubble's law holds also in a hierarchy with density jumps; (g)H100 km s–1 Mpc–1; (h) objects forming the stellar level of the hierarchy (in a cosmology of the Wilson type) must once have had 2GM/c 2 R1; (i) there is a finite pressurep=2Ga in all astrophysical systems (a=R N ,N2); (j) for the Galaxy, theory predictsp G7×10–12 dyn cm–2, observation givesp G5×10–12 dyn cm–2; (k) if the mass-defect (or excess binding energy) hypothesis is taken as a postulate, all non-collapsed astrophysical systems must be non-static, and any non-static, p0 systems must in any case be losing mass; (1) the predicted mass-loss rate from the Sun is 1012 g s–1, compared to 1011 g s–1 in the observed solar wind; (m) the mass-loss rates known by observation imply timescales of 5×109 years for the Sun and 1010 years for other astrophysical systems; (n) degenerate superdense objects composed of fermions must haveN-2 if they were ever at their Schwarzschild radii and comprised a finite numberN B of baryons; (o)N B1057N for degenerate fermion and boson systems; (p)285-4; (q) the metric coefficients for superdense bodies give equations of motion that imply equal maximum luminosities for all evolving superdense bodies (L max1059 erg s–1); (r) larger bodies have longer time-scales of energy radiation atL max (10–5 s for stars,1 h for QSO's) (s) expansion velocities are c soon after the initial loss of equilibrium in a superdense object; (t) if the density parametera(t) in aR –N isa=a (non-atomic constants of physicsc, G, A), andA, thenN=2; (u) N2 is necessary to giveMM at the stellar level of the hierarchy;(v) systems larger than, and including, galaxies must have formed by clumping of smaller systems and not (as advocated by Wertz and others) in a multiple big bang.  相似文献

On the basis of observational data for the absolute R and relative R/R amplitudes of variations in radius of galactic classical cepheids (55 stars from Balona and Stobie (1979) and 30 stars from Sollazzoet al. (1981)), four kinds of empirical linear relations are obtained: log(P V)–logR, logP–logR, log(P V)–log(R/R), and logP–log(R/R);P, R, and V are the pulsation periods, the mean stellar radii, and the amplitudes of light variations, respectively. Three groups of stars are considered: short-period cepheids (SPC)-with logP1.1; long-period cepheids (LPC)-with logP>1.1; and s-cepheids (sC). Both the R values and the R/R values increase withP andP V, for a given group of variables. A comparison is performed with our results obtained from data in other sources (Kurochkin, 1966; Gieren, 1982; etc.). The investigated relations can be applied for determining R and R/R of galactic classical cepheids, by using their observedP and V. All studied galactic classical cepheids have R/R<0.35, R<10R for SPC and 10R <R60R for LPC. The sC have smaller R and R/R values than other classical cepheids, at the same periods (the difference is about 2 times for R and 1.4–2.8 times for R/R); the studied sC have R/R in the range 0.025–0.075 and R in the range 1–3R (only Y Oph has R8R ).  相似文献

Starting from the field equationS =(T -A(T)), presented in a former paper, we present a test result, based on numerical simulations, giving a new model applied to the very large structure of the Universe. A theory of inverse gravitational lensing is developed, in which the observed effects could be due mainly to the action of surrounding antipodal matter. This is an alternative to the explanation based on dark matter existence. We then develop a cosmological model. Because of the hypothesis of homogeneity, the metric must be a solution of the equationS = 0, although the total mass of the Universe is non-zero. In order to avoid the trivial solutionR = constant ×t, we consider a model with variable constants. Then we derive the laws linking the different constants of physics:G, c, h, m; in order to keep the basic equations of physics invariant, so that the variation of these constants is not measurable in the laboratory, the only effect of this process being the red shift, due to the secular variation of these constants. All the energies are conserved, but not the masses. We find that all of the characteristic lengths (Schwarzschild, Jeans, Compton, Planck) vary like the characteristic lengthR, from where all the characteristic times vary like the cosmic timet. As the energy of the photonh is conserved over its flight, the decrease of its frequency is due to the growth of the Planck constanth t. In such conditions the field equations have a single solution, corresponding to a negative curvature and to an evolution law:R t 2/3.The model is no longer isentropic ands logt. The cosmologic horizon varies likeR, so that the homogeneity of the Universe is ensured at any time which constitues an alternative to the theory of inflation. We re-find, for moderate distances, Hubble's law. A new law: distance =f(z) is derived, very close to the classical one for moderate red shifts.  相似文献

We investigate a latitude–time distribution of polar faculae observed at Ussuriysk Observatory in years 1966–1986. The distribution is compared with the longitude-averaged (zonal) magnetic field of the Sun calculated from the data obtained at Mount Wilson Observatory in the years 1966–1976, and at Kitt Peak National Observatory during the period from 1976 to 1985. We found that slow, poleward-directed migration of the polar faculae zones occurring during the course of the solar cycle is not a continuous process, but it contains several episodes of appearance and fast poleward drift of new zones of polar faculae. At the rising phase of the solar cycle, new zones of polar faculae appear at latitudes as low as 40°, but the ones observed during the declining phase of the solar cycle originate at higher latitudes of 50–55°. Such episodes of appearance and fast migration of the polar faculae zones are associated with the poleward-directed streams of magnetic field originated at low latitudes. Moreover, we found some evidence for existence of an additional component of the polar faculae activity that reveals an equatorward migration during the course of the solar cycle. We also investigated a relationship between the number of polar faculae, n, and absolute magnetic flux z of the zonal mode of the solar magnetic field. We found that within the polar zones of the Sun, substantial correlation between temporal variations of n and z takes place both on the time scale of the solar cycle and on a shorter time scale of 2–4 years. The relationship between the number of polar faculae and magnetic flux may be approximated by a linear dependence n=0.12z (where z is expressed in 1021 Mx), except for time interval 1977 through 1980 for which the factor of proportionality is found to have a systematically larger value of 0.20.  相似文献

We have measured the longitudinal component, B, of the magnetic field in quiescent prominences and obtained a relationship between B and , where is the angle between the long axis of the prominence and the north-south direction on the sun. From this relationship we deduce a distribution function for the magnetic field vector in quiescent prominences in terms of the angle between the field and the long axis of the prominence. The mean angle, , for our data is small, - 15°, indicating that the magnetic field traverses quiescent prominences under a small, but finite angle. On leave from Max-Planck Institut für Physik und Astrophysik, München. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Based on analyzing corona images taken by the LASCO C1, C2, and C3 instruments, a study is made of the behavior of the streamer belt spanning one half of the 1996–2001 cycle of solar activity, from minimum to maximum activity, in the absence of coronal mass ejections. It is shown that: (1) The position of the streamer belt relative to the solar equator is generally characterized by two angles: o and E, where o is the latitudinal position (near the solar surface) of the middle of the base of the helmet, the top of which gradually transforms to a ray of the streamer belt with a further distance from the Sun, and E is the latitude of this ray for R>5–6 R from the Sun's center where the ray becomes radial. (2) Only rays lying at some of the selected latitudes o retain their radial orientation (oE) throughout their extent. Namely: o0° (equator), o±90° (north and south poles), and the angle o lying in the range ±(65°–75°) in the N- and S-hemispheres. (3) A deviation of rays from their radial orientation in the direction normal to the surface of the streamer belt occurs: for latitudes o<|65°–75°| toward the equator (>0°) reaching a maximum in the N and S hemispheres, respectively, when OM40°, and OM–42° for latitudes o>|65°–75°| toward the pole (<0°). The regularities obtained here are a numerical test which can be used to assess of the validity of the theory for describing the behavior of the Sun's quasi-stationary corona over a cycle of solar activity.  相似文献

An exact analysis of the effects of mass transfer on the flow of a viscous incompressible fluid past an uniformly accelerated vertical porous and non-porous plate has been presented on taking into account the free convection currents. I give an interpretation of a result of Simpsonet al. (1988) on the variation with kinetic energyT i of the mean pathlengthX m (T i ) of the galactic cosmic rays (CGRs) in the range 0.1T i 10.0 GeV nucl–1. I argue that the data onX m (T i ) may be interpreted in terms of a model of GCR diffusion on the one-dimensional Alfvén-wave turbulence, having a cutoff in the spectrum at frequencies h , where h is the proton gyrofrequency. The cutoff results in changing of the character of variation of the GCR diffusion coefficientD(T i )T a in the rangeT i 1 GeV nucl–1 towards some more complicated variation at 0.1T i 1.0 GeV nucl–1 due to the peculiarities of the pitch-angle scattering at 900.  相似文献

Summary Evolution of the orbital elements of a two-body system with slowly decreasing mass according to Jeans' mode is described by a non-linear, non-autonomous system of differential equations. In general the system contains one stationary solution (e=1,f=), for which an instability criterion is derived. For example the stationary solution is unstable for all Jeans-Eddington functionsm n (t) with 1n3 which characterize the loss of mass. Furthermore, it is possible to describe the quantitative behaviour ofE+,e anda for arbitrarym(t) in a large number of cases. In the case of the Jeans-Eddington functions we find that the amplitude of the oscillations ine is monotone decreasing with time ifn>3 and it is monotone increasing with time ifn<3.By comparing these analytical results with the numerical calculations of Hadjidemetriou we explain the rapid rotation of the line of apsides which occurs if the initial value ofe is nearly-circular.

The effect of ion–neutral collisions on the propagation of MHD waves and surface waves at a single magnetic interface is investigated. The dispersion equations for MHD waves in a partially ionized medium are derived. There are three damped propagating modes in a uniform unbounded medium: an Alfvén mode, and fast and slow modes. The damping of waves depends on both the collisional frequency and the ionization fraction. Wave damping increases as ionization fraction decreases. Surface waves are discussed in three cases: (a) the incompressible limit, (b) the low plasma, and (c) for parallel propagation. The incompressible limit leads to Alfvén surface waves in a partially ionized medium and the dispersion characteristics are similar to those obtained by Uberoi and Datta. In the low plasma of the Earth's auroral F region there are two damped propagating magnetoacoustic surface waves for =/3. There is only one damped surface mode for =/2, but no surface wave is able to propagate for =0°. For the case of parallel propagation (=0°) the results obtained in the absence of ion-neutral collisions are consistent with the results of Jain and Roberts. It is found that a three-mode structure of damped propagating waves occurs owing to ion–neutral collisions for a comparatively high ionization fraction. For the case of the solar photosphere, where the ionization fraction is low, two weakly damped surface waves are found, though the damping is almost negligible. The pattern of propagation is similar to that found in the case discussed by Jain and Roberts, but the wave speeds are lower due to ion–neutral collisions. The strong collisions tie the ion–neutral species together and reduce the damping.  相似文献

The variation of radio luminosity with redshift and its effect on the analysis of the angular size-redshift (z) relation for a bright radio source sample (s 178 10Jy) has been investigated. By assuming a power law dependence of luminosity on redshift of the formP (1 +z), it was found that 4.4 (with correlation coefficientr 0.99) for at leastz 0.3. Correction for such a strongP – (1 +z) correlation when considering thez data for the sample led to a steeperz slope. This could be explained by assuming linear size evolution of the formD (1 +z)n withn = 2.8 – 3.3 consistent with both theoretical results and those obtained for more homogeneous source samples.  相似文献

The area preserving mapping x = x + a(yy 3), y = ya(xx3), for 0.3 a 2.0 has been studied to locate approximately the x-axis points bounding almost stable regions. For each value of a, these are fixed points with variational trace just greater than 2.0. Transition to chaos can occur rapidly as a increases (with n/k fixed).  相似文献

The consequences of a cosmological term varying asS –2 in a spatially isotropic universe with scale factorS and conserved matter tensor are investigated. One finds a perpetually expanding universe with positive and gravitational constantG that increases with time. The hard equation of state 3P>U (U mass-energy density,P scalar pressure) applied to the early universe leads to the expansion lawSt (t cosmic time) which solves the horizon problem with no need of inflation. Also the flatness problem is resolved without inflation. The model does not affect the well known predictions on the cosmic light elements abundance which come from standard big bang cosmology. In the present, matter dominated universe one findsdG/dt=2H/U (H is the Hubble parameter) which is consistent with observations provided <10–57 cm–2. Asymptotically (S) the term equalsGU/2, in agreement with other studies.  相似文献
