Laboratory reared veliger larvae of the common mussel Mytilus edulis were grown for 15 days in filtered seawater containing 10 μg l?1, 1 μg l?1 and 0.1 μg l?1 tributyltin oxide (TBTO), the biocide in recent antifouling paint formulations. No larvae survived longer than 5 days in 10 μg l?1 TBTO or 10 days in 1 μg l?1 TBTO. Approximately half the larvae subjected to 0.1 μg l?1 TBTO were dead by day 15 (approximate 15 day LC50 = 0.1 μg l?1 TBTO) and most of the surviving larvae were moribund and had grown significantly more slowly than controls. It is noted that current recorded levels of TBT at several UK estuarine sites are higher than 0.1 μg l?1 and there has therefore probably been a high mortality of mussel larvae at such sites. The results are discussed in relation to the reported short-term toxicity of organotins to other marine organisms and the value of carrying out longer-term tests at low levels of TBT is pointed out.  相似文献

Hatchery produced spat of the Pacific Oyster Crassostrea gigas were exposed to low levels of bis(tri-n-butyltin)oxide (TBTO) 0.2, 0.1, 0.05, 0.02, and 0.01 μg I−1. Their oxygen consumption, feeding rate, compensation for hypoxia, and growth rate was examined after exposure to TBTO and compared to their performance prior to this. In all cases highly significant relationships between TBTO concentration and the physiological variable in question were observed. Significant effects were found down to levels of 0.05 μg I−1 for oxygen consumption and feeding rate, to 0.02 μg I−1 for growth and to 0.01 μg I−1 for compensation for hypoxia. These levels are far lower than those reported for many UK sites and the results are discussed in relation to the possible environmental impact of the observed effects.  相似文献

A static renewal toxicity test was conducted to evaluate the response of the copepod Acartia tonsa to bis(tributyltin) oxide (TBTO), the active compound of recently developed antifouling paints. Copepods were individually placed in test tubes containing 4 ml of 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 1.7 or 3.0 μg l?1 TBTO with acetone and seawater. Thirty copepods were used for each treatment and control condition and all solutions were renewed daily. The 96-h LC50 was 1.0 μg l?1 with a 95% confidence interval between 0.8 and 1.2 μg l?1 TBTO. The 144-h EC50 was 0.4 μg l?1 TBTO which approaches concentrations recently measured in San Diego Bay. Some copepods exposed to 0.3 μg l?1 TBTO became moribund after six days.  相似文献

Crassostrea gigas spat were cultured for 8 weeks in the presence of a mixed algal diet in experimental tanks containing bis (tributyl tin) oxide (TBTO) alone, TBTO and a marine sediment, or a marine sediment alone. Growth measurements taken on a weekly basis showed enhanced weight gain in oysters exposed to nominal 50 and 100 mg l?1 concentrations of marine sediment alone. Spat in low level TBTO treatments (0.15 μg l?1) grew less well than the controls and showed pronounced thickening of the upper shell valve. High levels of TBTO (1.6 μg l?1) severely inhibited oyster growth. Tissue concentrations of TBT compounds were measured at the end of the experiment. Bio-concentration factors of 3000- and 10000-fold were demonstrated for the high and low TBTO treatments respectively.  相似文献

Samples of seawater from sites along the southwest coast were collected during 1984 and analysed for total tin and organotin by flameless atomic absorption spectro-photometry. Organotin concentrations were below detection limits (0.10 μg l?1 TBTO) at all marina sites, but higher concentrations were found in harbour waters, the highest value being 0.88 μg l?1 TBTO at Plymouth (Sutton harbour). The fact that organotin levels may occasionally exceed some toxicological threshold concentrations suggests that biological water quality may sometimes be depressed.  相似文献

Acute toxicty tests (LT50) of copper or cadmium on the crustacean isopod Idothea baltica demonstrated differences between females, males, and juveniles. Copper appears to be more toxic than cadmium. the effects of chronic exposure to 5 μl−1 and 500 μl−1 copper or cadmium were evaluated from survival, body growth, and sex ratio in the first stages of juveniles development. While in juveniles 500 μl−1 significantly affected body growth, sex ratio, and survival, 5 μl−1 affected only survival. The study of the long-term effects of a pollutant on different demographic parameters in a species can serve to assess a ‘safe’ level of environmental contamination.  相似文献

An intercomparison exercise was conducted at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research, Inc, Bermuda on 1–15 December 1984. It primarily involved the testing of the IOC Manual for monitoring oil and dissolved/dispersed petroleum hydrocarbons (DDPH) in marine waters and on beaches (IOC, Manuals and Guides, No. 13). An additional exercise sought to intercompare methodologies for the collection of sea surface microlayer samples.DDPH measurements in the inshore waters of Bermuda resulted in a mean concentration of 0.057 μg l−1 of (n = 30) chrysene equivalents with a 60% relative standard deviation (RSD). Open ocean samples yielded a mean concentration of 0.011 μg l−1 (n = 44) with a 65% RSD. These concentrations are extremely low and the results indicate that the method described in the Manual is sufficiently sensitive for the detection of ‘hot spots’The collection of beach tar using the method outlined in the Manual indicated that the data, when expresed as per metre of linear beach length, are an extremely good measure of oil contamination. The mean of 42 collections was 23.1 ± 14.4 g m−1 in the first sampling period and the mean of 39 transects was 40.6 ± 17.7 g m−1 on the second sampling period. Although 14 individuals took part in the sampling the results of individuals were consistent enough to demonstrate that beach tar collections are indeed valuable tools for monitoring contamination by petroleum in the marine environment.The operational manual for the sampling of the sea surface microlayer (IOC Manuals and Guides, No. 15), was also tested. The results indicated that this method collects reproduceable volumes of elevated concentrations of materials from the sea surface suitable at least for qualitative analyses. However, the spatial distribution and stability of surface films may render quantitative analyses less meaningful.  相似文献

Direct sediment inputs from forest roads at stream crossings are a major concern for water quality and aquatic habitat. Legacy road–stream crossing approaches, or the section of road leading to the stream, may have poor water and grade control upon reopening, thus increasing the potential for negative impacts to water quality. Rainfall simulation experiments were conducted on the entire running surface area associated with six reopened stream crossing approaches in the south‐western Virginia Piedmont physiographic region, USA. Event‐based surface run‐off and associated total suspended solid (TSS) concentrations were compared among a succession of gravel surfacing treatments that represented increasing intensities of best management practice (BMP) implementation. The three treatments were no gravel (10–19% cover), low gravel (34–60% cover), and high gravel (50–99% cover). Increased field hydraulic conductivity was associated with maximized surface cover and ranged from 7.2 to 41.6, 11.9 to 46.3, and 16.0 to 58.6 mm h−1 respectively for the no gravel, low gravel, and high gravel treatments. Median TSS concentration of surface run‐off for the no gravel treatment (2.84 g l−1) was greater than low gravel (1.10 g l−1) and high gravel (0.82 g l−1) by factors of 2.6 and 3.5 respectively. Stream crossing approaches with 90–99% surface cover had TSS concentrations below 1 g l−1. Reducing the length of road segments that drain directly to the stream can reduce the costs associated with gravel surfacing. This research demonstrates that judicious and low‐cost BMPs can ameliorate poor water control and soil erosion associated with reopening legacy roads. We studied the distribution of cyanotoxins and potential producers, as well as the variability of microcystin to biomass parameters (chlorophyll-a; MC/Chl-a; and biovolume; MC/BV) in 12 drinking water reservoirs of the world’s largest reservoir system, the Volga-Kama-Don cascade (European part of Russia) during the summers of 2016 and 2018. MC concentrations varied from below 0.1 μg L−1 in June up to 16.4 μg L−1 in August and exceeded 1 μg L-1 in 25 % of the samples. This MC variability was associated to changes in the abundance of widespread bloom formers such as Microcystis spp., Dolichospermum spp. and Planktothrix agardhii. Ratios of MC/Chl-a and MC/BVcyano ranged up to 0.88 μg μg−1 and 4.5 μg mm³, respectively. Together with microcystin profiles MC/BVcyano ratios characterized cyanobacterial populations along the reservoir cascade and they indicated a potential toxin hazard better than MC/Chl-a. The neurotoxin anatoxin-a was observed only in the most southern and hypereutrophic Tsimlyansk Reservoir (maximum 0.01 μg L−1). Toxin gene analysis revealed that MC mostly originated from Microcystis and Dolichospermum. During their co-existence up to 14 MC congeners co-occurred. Cuspidothrix issatschenkoi cf. Raphidiopsis mediterranea was identified as possible neurotoxin producers.  相似文献

Mean concentrations of total hydrocarbons were 2.95, 4.14 and 3.29 μg l−1 in seawater of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Qatar respectively. High concentrations were measured at the northern coasts of Qatar. Northern coasts of Qatar were found to be affected directly by water advected from Saudi Arabia seawater through the water circulation in this area. High concentration of oil (546.4 μg l−1) was detected at the area in front of pipelines extended from Ras Tanura and Ju'aymah centres of oil production and exportation in the Arabian Gulf. This high concentration was detected in the north coast of Qatar after a period of 44 days indicating current speed of 5 cm s−1 prevailing in this area.  相似文献

The concentration levels of Cd (25 ng l?1), Cu (0.45 μg l?1), Ni (0.48 μg l?1), Fe (0.2–7.0 μg l?1), Pb (40 ng l?1) and Zn (0.80 μg l?1) have been determined in the Danish Sounds and in the Kattegat. Different sampling techniques have been used and analyses have been carried out separately by two different investigators, both using freon-extraction followed by determination by atomic absorption spectrometry (a.a.s.). Except for iron, found mainly in the particulate phase, the metals are found predominantly in a dissolved and labile (extractable) form. The results are compared with trace metal levels found in the two main water masses entering the Kattegat—the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.  相似文献

Chlorination of sea water used as cooling and feed water in the combined desalination-power plants of Kuwait leads to the formation of appreciable quantities of halomethanes. Significant concentrations of these compounds (up to 90 μg l−1 as total haloforms) are present in the sea in the immediate vicinity of the out-falls from these plants. Beyond the point of discharge, the distributions of these compounds are consistent with the hydrography of the area, concentrations falling to below the detection limit (0.1 μg l−1) within a few kilometres as a result of mixing and evaporation. Bromoform generally accounts for 95% of the total halomethanes, almost all of the remainder being dibromochloromethane.  相似文献

Surface water draining granitic bedrock in Yosemite National Park exhibits considerable variability in chemical composition, despite the relative homogeneity of bedrock chemistry. Other geological factors, including the jointing and distribution of glacial till, appear to exert strong controls on water composition. Chemical data from three surface water surveys in the upper Merced River basin conducted in August 1981, June 1988 and August 1991 were analysed and compared with mapped geological, hydrological and topographic features to identify the solute sources and processes that control water chemistry within the basin during baseflow. Water at most of the sampling sites was dilute, with alkalinities ranging from 26 to 77 μequiv. l−1. Alkalinity was much higher in two subcatchments, however, ranging from 51 to 302 μequiv. l−1. Base cations and silica were also significantly higher in these two catchments than in the rest of the watershed. Concentrations of weathering products in surface water were correlated to the fraction of each subcatchment underlain by surficial material, which is mostly glacial till. Silicate mineral weathering is the dominant control on concentrations of alkalinity, silica and base cations, and ratios of these constituents in surface water reflect the composition of local bedrock. Chloride concentrations in surface water samples varied widely, ranging from <1 to 96 μequiv. l−1. The annual volume-weighted mean chloride concentration in the Merced River at the Happy Isles gauge from 1968 to 1990 was 26 μequiv. l−1, which was five times higher than in atmospheric deposition (4–5 μequiv. l−1), suggesting that a source of chloride exists within the watershed. Saline groundwater springs, whose locations are probably controlled by vertical jointing in the bedrock, are the most likely source of the chloride. Sulphate concentrations varied much less than most other solutes, ranging from 3 to 14 μequiv. l−1. Concentrations of sulphate in quarterly samples collected at the watershed outlet also showed relatively little variation, suggesting that sulphate may be regulated to some extent by a within-watershed process, such as sulphate adsorption.  相似文献

In February 1991 Wheal Jane, a tin mine in S.W. England, was closed, the mine drainage pumps were removed and underground water levels were left to rise. By January 1992 the build up of water in the mine was sufficient to cause the Nangiles adit to burst, and contaminated mine water containing high levels of arsenic overflowed into the Carnon River. The river in turn drained into an estuary system which reaches the sea at Falmouth. A contingency plan was introduced, with water being pumped from the mine and treated before discharge through a tailings dam. This brought the discharge from Nangiles under control by late February 1992, although flow recommenced from mid-April until early July 1992.The immediate impact of the discharge and treatment operation on the distribution and speciation of arsenic in the river was the presence of high concentrations of dissolved arsenite, with a level of 240 μg As l−1 being measured below the mine tailings dam. Elevated concentrations of arsenite, typically 9 μg As l−1, persisted in the saline region of the Carnon estuary. By the following July the levels of arsenite had dropped significantly in the river but the levels in Restronguet Creek remained essentially unchanged. In comparison with the arsenite concentrations, the arsenate levels were comparatively low in the whole river/estuary system in the February following the initial discharge. A significant increase was however found in the saline region in the following July.Methylated arsenic species were absent from the river but were present in the biologically productive saline region during the warmer summer sampling period. The July concentrations of dimethylarsenic ranged from 1.0 to 2.1 μg As l−1 and monomethylarsenic from 0.2 to 0.5 μg As l−1.  相似文献

The mercury content in the marine phanerogam Posidonia oceanica, sampled in an area near a chloralkali complex, has been measured and compared with that of the samples collected in a non-impacted region.Plants growing in the seawater facing the chlor-alkali complex showed mercury content of 0.19 μg g−1 f.w., compared with 0.02 μg g−1 f.w. in the samples from the control area. Sediments of the industrial area have mercury levels 20–30 times higher than those from the control area. As the mercury concentration in seawater of both areas is comparable, the mercury content in the plant appears to be correlated with mercury levels in the sediment; probably the metal uptake in Posidonia oceanica takes place mainly through the root system.  相似文献

A monthly sampling programme for dibutyltin (DBT), tributyltin (TBT) and tetrabutyltin (TTBT) was initiated for a period of one year (July 1985–June 1986) in the Maryland waters of Chesapeake Bay. Concentrations of the above butyltin species were evaluated in the microlayer and water column of eight sampling stations representing two small and two large marinas, a large harbour, two major river systems and a heavily used shipping channel. DBT concentrations in the microlayer were generally higher in the four marinas when compared with the other stations. The highest DBT concentration reported in the microlayer was 1156 ng l−1. Mean microlayer TBT concentrations ranged from 54–310 ng l−1 in the four marinas. Three TBT concentrations ranging from 1049–1171 ng l−1 were reported in the microlayer of the marinas. TBT concentrations of 41 and 29 mg l−1 were detected in the microlayer of a heavily used shipping channel (C & D Canal) during May and June. TTBT concentrations were not detected in the microlayer at most stations during the 12 month sampling period.Mean DBT concentrations in the water column ranged from 23–145 ng l−1 in the four marinas. DBT concentrations in the water column of the other stations were < 35 ng l−1. Mean water column concentrations of TBT ranged from 51–408 ng l−1 in all four marinas. Peak concentrations of TBT were reported in May and June for the various marinas. The highest TBT concentration reported in the water column was 998 ng l−1. TBT concentrations of 20–24 ng l−1 were reported in one of the river systems (Potomac River). TTBT concentrations were not detected in the water column at most of the stations.  相似文献

The effects of prolonged exposure to reduced oxygen levels (3.0 and 1.5 mg O2 l−1) on marine scavenging gastropods Nassarius festivus were studied for 8 weeks. The percentages of individuals engaged in feeding and amount of food consumed were reduced as oxygen level decreased; absorption efficiency, however, did not vary significantly with oxygen level. Oxygen consumption rates and specific oxygen consumption rates were lower at reduced oxygen levels. Reproduction occurred at all oxygen levels with less egg capsules being produced at lower oxygen levels. Egg size and number of eggs per capsule, however, were not significantly affected by oxygen level. The increase in shell length was 12%, 6% and 5% at 6.0 mg O2 l−1 (normoxia), 3.0 mg O2 l−1 and 1.5 mg O2 l−1, respectively. At the end of the experiment, the amount of energy allocated to growth and reproduction decreased at reduced oxygen levels with values obtained at 3.0 mg O2 l−1 and 1.5 mg O2 l−1 being 48% and 70% lower than those at 6.0 mg O2 l−1. At all oxygen levels, most of the accumulated energy was allocated to shell growth and reproduction, and the amount allocated to somatic growth was relatively insignificant. The reduction in energy allocated to reproduction was greater than that to shell growth as the oxygen level was reduced, indicating a strategic energy allocation of marine scavengers under stressful conditions to enhance survival.  相似文献

The concentration of petroleum hydrocarbons in Arctic surface water under the ice north of Svalbard has been determined by fluorescence spectrofluorometry using three different excitation/emission wavelength combinations. With Kuwait crude oil as a reference, the concentration range is 0.1–0.6 μg l?1 crude oil equivalents with respect to light molecular weight components and 0.05–0.2 μg l?1 heavy molecular weight components.  相似文献

Filtered (0.45 μm), unacidified, surface seawater samples, collected at 3-monthly intervals for 9 months from three locations within the Great Barrier Reef Province, were analysed for zinc, copper, nickel, cadmium and lead by atomic absorption spectroscopy (air/acetylene flame) following Chelex-100 (ammonium form) extraction. Mean levels of each metal ranged from 0.03–0.35; 0.11–0.24; 0.06–0.16; <0.01–0.06; all less than 0.06 μg l−1 respectively. Significant interlocational differences were observed for copper and nickel and clear temporal trends were identified for copper (location-dependent) and cadmium.  相似文献
