We present CCD BVI photometry of the old open cluster Berkeley 21, one of the most distant clusters in the Galactic anticentre direction, and possibly the lowest metallicity object in the open clusters sample. Its position and metal abundance make it very important for the study of the Galactic disc. Using the synthetic colour–magnitude diagram method, we estimate values for the distance modulus ( m  − M )0 = 13.4–13.6, reddening E ( B  −  V ) = 0.74–0.78 (with possible differential absorption), and age = 2.2–2.5 Gyr.  相似文献

The first charge-coupled device   UBV ( RI )C  photometric study in the area of the doubtful open cluster NGC 2129 is presented. Photometry of a field offset 15 arcmin northwards is also provided, to probe the Galactic disc population towards the cluster. Using star counts, proper motions from the UCAC2 catalogue, colour–magnitude and colour–colour diagrams, we demonstrate that NGC 2129 is a young open cluster. The cluster radius is 2.5 arcmin, and across this region we find evidence of significant differential reddening, although the reddening law seems to be normal towards its direction. Updated estimates of the cluster fundamental parameters are provided. The mean reddening is found to be   E ( B − V ) = 0.80 ± 0.08  and the distance modulus is  ( m − M )0= 11.70 ± 0.30  . Hence, NGC 2129 is located at 2.2 ± 0.2 kpc from the Sun inside the Local spiral arm. The age derived from 37 photometrically selected members is estimated to be approximately 10 Myr. These stars are used to provide new estimates of the cluster absolute proper-motion components.  相似文献

We used the 13.7 m millimeter-wave telescope of the Qinghai Station of Purple Mountain Observatory at Delingha to carry out simultaneous mapping observations in the 12CO(J = 1 − 0), 13CO(J = 1 − 0) and CO18 (J = 1 − 0) lines towards 11 isolated star-forming molecular cores selected from the sample of Spitzer's c2d program. For all three lines, these sources were all observed to the positions of half the peak intensity of the 13CO(J = 1 − 0) line. The volume density, local thermodynamic equilibrium mass MLTE and virial mass MVIR were derived for each of the molecular cores. The obtained ratio of MVIR to MLTE is 0.85 ± 0.40 for the 13CO(J = 1 − 0) cores and 0.77 ± 0.35 for the CO18 (J = 1 − 0) cores. The density profiles of the cloud cores were also calculated.  相似文献

We report the identification, from a photometric, astrometric and spectroscopic study, of a massive white dwarf member of the nearby, approximately solar metallicity, Coma Berenices open star cluster (Melotte 111). We find the optical to near-infrared energy distribution of WD 1216+260 to be entirely consistent with that of an isolated DA and determine the effective temperature and surface gravity of this object to be   T eff= 15 739+197−196 K  and  log  g = 8.46+0.03−0.02  . We set tight limits on the mass of a putative cool companion,   M ≳ 0.036 M  (spatially unresolved) and   M ≳ 0.034 M  (spatially resolved and   a ≲ 2500 au  ). Based on the predictions of CO core, thick H layer evolutionary models we determine the mass and cooling time of WD 1216+260 to be   M WD= 0.90 ± 0.04 M  and  τcool= 363+46−41 Myr  , respectively. For an adopted cluster age of  τ= 500 ± 100 Myr  we infer the mass of its progenitor star to be   M init= 4.77+5.37−0.97 M  . We briefly discuss this result in the context of the form of the stellar initial mass–final mass relation.  相似文献

UBV(RI) C CCD photometry of a 2.1 × 3.3 arcmin2 field centred on the young open cluster Haffner 18 is presented and discussed. Spectroscopic classification of seven stars is also provided. 44 cluster members are identified, the earliest type being O6. The distance to the cluster is found to be 6.3 kpc, corresponding to a galactocentric distance of 12.7 kpc (for a Sun galactocentric distance of 8.5 kpc). An excellent fit to the observed main sequence is achieved by a solar composition isochrone of 2 × 106 yr reddened by E(B − V)  = 0.62 mag. Differential reddening of intracluster origin is present. Pre-main-sequence members are likely to be present over the 6 mag range explored by our observations (reaching down to earliest A spectral types). The presence of differential reddening and pre-main-sequence members agrees with the evidence for a bright parent nebulosity embedding the whole cluster. The radial velocity of the cluster is consistent with the Hron model of Galactic rotation.  相似文献

In general, H  ii regions do not show clear signs of self-enrichment in products from massive stars  ( M ≥ 8 M)  . In order to explore why I modelled the contamination with Wolf–Rayet star ejecta of metal-poor  ( Z = 0.001)  H  ii regions, ionized either by a  106 M  cluster of coeval stars (cluster 1) or by a cluster resulting from continuous star formation at a rate of  1 M yr−1  (cluster 2). The clusters have   Z = 0.001  and a Salpeter initial mass function from 0.1 to  120 M  . Independent one-dimensional constant density simulations of the emission-line spectra of unenriched H  ii regions were computed at the discrete ages 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Myr, with the photoionization code cloudy , using as input, radiative and mechanical stellar feedbacks predicted by the evolutionary synthesis code starburst99 . Each H  ii region was placed at the outer radius of the adiabatically expanding superbubble of Mac Low & McCray. For models with thermal and ionization balance time-scales of less than 1 Myr, and with oxygen emission-line ratios in agreement with observations, the volume of the superbubble and the H  ii region was uniformly and instantaneously polluted with stellar ejecta predicted by starburst99 . I obtained a maximum oxygen abundance enhancement of 0.025 dex, with cluster 1, at 4 Myr. It would be unobservable.  相似文献

Photoelectric, photographic and CCD UBV photometry, spectroscopic observations and star counts are presented for the open cluster Berkeley 58 to examine a possible association with the 4.37 d Cepheid CG Cas. The cluster is difficult to separate from the early-type stars belonging to the Perseus spiral arm, in which it is located, but has reasonably well-defined parameters: an evolutionary age of ∼108 yr, a mean reddening of   E ( B − V ) (B0) = 0.70 ± 0.03  s.e. and a distance of  3.03 ± 0.17 kpc ( V 0− M V = 12.40 ± 0.12  s.d.). CG Cas is a likely cluster coronal member on the basis of radial velocity, and its period increase of  +0.170 ± 0.014 s yr−1  and large light amplitude describe a Cepheid in the third crossing of the instability strip lying slightly blueward of strip centre. Its inferred reddening and luminosity are   E ( B − V ) = 0.64 ± 0.02  s.e. and  〈 M V 〉=−3.06 ± 0.12  . A possible K supergiant may also be a cluster member.  相似文献

A deep   K s   -band photometric catalogue of galaxies at the core of the rich, nearby Norma cluster (ACO3627) is presented. The survey covers about  45 × 45 arcmin2  (slightly less than 1/3 Abell radius), which corresponds to  ∼0.8  h −270 Mpc2  at the adopted distance  ( v CMB/ H 0)  of  70  h −170 Mpc  of this cluster. The survey is estimated to be complete to a magnitude of     . This extends into the dwarf regime, 6 mag below     . The catalogue contains 390 objects, 235 of which are classified as likely or definite galaxies and 155 as candidate galaxies. The   K s   -band luminosity function (LF) is constructed from the photometric sample, using a spectroscopic subsample to correct for fore and background contamination. We fit a Schechter function with a characteristic magnitude of     and faint-end slope of  α=−1.26 ± 0.10  to the data. The shape of the LF is similar to those found in previous determinations of the cluster LF, in both optical and near-infrared. The Schechter parameters agree well with those of recent field LFs, suggesting that the shape of both the bright-end and the faint-end slopes are relatively insensitive to environment.  相似文献

The study of old open clusters outside the solar circle can bring constraints on formation scenarios of the outer disc. In particular, accretion of dwarf galaxies has been proposed as a likely mechanism in the area. We use BVI photometry for determining fundamental parameters of the faint open cluster ESO 92-SC05. Colour–magnitude diagrams are compared with Padova isochrones, in order to derive age, reddening and distance. We derive a reddening   E ( B − V ) = 0.17  , and an old age of ∼6.0 Gyr. It is one of the rare open clusters known to be older than 5 Gyr. A metallicity of   Z ∼ 0.004  or  [M/H]∼−0.7  is found. The rather low metallicity suggests that this cluster might be the result of an accretion episode of a dwarf galaxy.  相似文献

A detailed dynamical analysis of the nearby rich Norma cluster (ACO 3627) is presented. From radial velocities of 296 cluster members, we find a mean velocity of 4871 ± 54 km s−1 and a velocity dispersion of 925 km s−1. The mean velocity of the E/S0 population (4979 ± 85 km s−1) is offset with respect to that of the S/Irr population (4812 ± 70 km s−1) by  Δ v = 164 km s−1  in the cluster rest frame. This offset increases towards the core of the cluster. The E/S0 population is free of any detectable substructure and appears relaxed. Its shape is clearly elongated with a position angle that is aligned along the dominant large-scale structures in this region, the so-called Norma wall. The central cD galaxy has a very large peculiar velocity of 561 km s−1 which is most probably related to an ongoing merger at the core of the cluster. The spiral/irregular galaxies reveal a large amount of substructure; two dynamically distinct subgroups within the overall spiral population have been identified, located along the Norma wall elongation. The dynamical mass of the Norma cluster within its Abell radius is  1–1.1 × 1015  h −173 M  . One of the cluster members, the spiral galaxy WKK 6176 which recently was observed to have a 70 kpc X-ray tail, reveals numerous striking low-brightness filaments pointing away from the cluster centre suggesting strong interaction with the intracluster medium.  相似文献

We present 450- and 800-μm images, made with the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, of the NGC 2024 molecular ridge. The seven previously known compact cores, FIR1–7, have been detected, and FIR5 has been resolved into a compact object and an associated extended source to the east. The estimated masses of the dense cores vary between 1.6 and 5.1 M⊙ per 14-arcsec beam, assuming a dust temperature of 30 K and a dust opacity of κ800 μm = 0.002 m2 kg−1. A spectral index map made from the 450- and 800-μm images shows spatial variations, with the spectral index, α ( F ν ∝ να), being systematically lower towards the dense cores. We interpret this as evidence for a lower value of the frequency dependence of the dust opacity, β, towards the denser cores relative to the surrounding molecular material. This may indicate that grain growth is occurring in the cores, prior to planetesimal formation. By comparing the high-resolution 450-μm image with interferometer maps of the integrated CS(2–1) emission, the previously reported discrepancy between dust continuum emission and molecular line emission is found to be very localized. Depletion and temperature variations are discussed as possible explanations.  相似文献

Using metallicities from the literature, combined with the Revised Bologna Catalogue of photometric data for M31 clusters and cluster candidates [the latter of which is the most comprehensive catalogue of M31 clusters currently available, including 337 confirmed globular clusters (GCs) and 688 GC candidates], we determine 443 reddening values and intrinsic colours, and 209 metallicities for individual clusters without spectroscopic observations. This, the largest sample of M31 GCs presently available, is then used to analyse the metallicity distribution of M31 GCs, which is bimodal with peaks at [Fe/H]≈−1.7 and −0.7 dex. An exploration of metallicities as a function of radius from the M31 centre shows a metallicity gradient for the metal-poor GCs, but no such gradient for the metal-rich GCs. Our results show that the metal-rich clusters appear as a centrally concentrated spatial distribution; however, the metal-poor clusters tend to be less spatially concentrated. There is no correlation between luminosity and metallicity among the M31 sample clusters, which indicates that self-enrichment is indeed unimportant for cluster formation in M31.
The reddening distribution shows that slightly more than half of the GCs are affected by a reddening of E ( B − V ) ≲ 0.2 mag; the mean reddening value is   E ( B − V ) = 0.28+0.23−0.14 mag  . The spatial distribution of the reddening values indicates that the reddening on the north-western side of the M31 disc is more significant than that on the south-eastern side, which is consistent with the conclusion that the north-western side is nearer to us.  相似文献

Using the 13.7 m millimeter-wave telescope at the Qinghai Station of Purple Mountain Observatory, we have made observations of 13CO, C18O, HCO+ and N2H+ molecular lines towards IRAS 02232+6138. As the excitation density of the probe molecule increases from 13CO to HCO+, the size of the cloud core associated with IRAS 02232+6138 decreases from 2.40 pc to 0.54 pc, and the virial mass of the cloud core decreases from 2.2 × 103M to 5.1 × 102M. A bipolar molecular outflow is found towards IRAS 02232+6138. Using the power function n(r) ∝ r to fit the spatial density structure of the cloud core, we obtain the power-law index  = 2.3 − 1.2; and we find that, as the probed density increases, the power function becomes more flat. The abundance ratio of 13CO to C18O is 12.4 ± 6.9, comparable with the values 11.8 ± 5.9 for dark clouds and the values 9.0–15.6 for massive cores. The abundance of N2H+ molecules is 3.5 ± 2.5 × 10−10, consistent with the value 1.0 − 5.0 × 10−10 for dark cloud cores and the value 1.2 − 12.8 × 10−10 for massive cores. The abundance of HCO+ molecules is 0.9 ± 0.5 × 10−9, close to the value 1.6 − 2.4 × 10−9 for massive cores. An increase of HCO+ abundance in the outflow region was not found. Combining with the IRAS data, the luminosity-mass ratio of the cloud core is obtained in the range 37–163(L/M). Based on the IRAS luminosity, it is estimated that a main-sequence O7.5 star is probably embedded in the IRAS 02232+6138 cloud core.  相似文献

With an apparent cluster diameter of 1.5° and an age of 4 Myr, Trumpler 37 is an ideal target for photometric monitoring of young stars as well as for the search of planetary transits, eclipsing binaries and other sources of variability. The YETI consortium has monitored Trumpler 37 throughout 2010 and 2011 to obtain a comprehensive view of variable phenomena in this region. In this first paper we present the cluster properties and membership determination as derived from an extensive investigation of the literature. We also compared the coordinate list to some YETI images. For 1872 stars we found literature data. Among them 774 have high probability of being member and 125 a medium probability. Based on infrared data we re‐calculate a cluster extinction of 0.9–1.2 mag. We can confirm the age and distance to be 3–5 Myr and870 pc. Stellar masses are determined from theoretical models and the mass function is fitted with a power‐law index of α = 1.90 (0.1–0.4 M) and α = 1.12 (1–10 M). (© 2013 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We present CCD photometry in the Johnson U , B and V and Kron–Cousins I passbands for the open cluster NGC 2587. The sample consists of 4406 stars reaching down to   V ∼ 21.0  . We developed a new method to clean statistically the colour–magnitude diagrams. NGC 2587 appears to be a sparse, relatively bright open cluster, with a few tens of members projected on to a populous star field. The comparatively bright F7/8 II type star HD 70927, located close to the cluster centre, seems not to be a member. Our analysis suggests that NGC 2587 is slightly younger than the Hyades and probably of solar metallicity. A cluster radius of roughly 8 arcmin was estimated from the radial stellar density profile. From 18 probable cluster members with measured proper motions, we derive the following mean values for NGC 2587:  μα=−4.3 ± 3.6 mas yr−1  and  μδ=−2.5 ± 3.4 mas yr−1  . Adopting the theoretical metal content   Z = 0.02  , which provides the best global fit, we derive a cluster age of  500+60−50  . Simultaneously, colour excesses   E ( B − V ) = 0.10  and   E ( V − I ) = 0.15  and an apparent distance modulus of   V − MV = 12.50  are obtained. The interstellar extinction in the cluster direction is found to follow the normal law. NGC 2587 is located at a distance of (2.70 ± 0.70) kpc from the Sun and ∼9.8 kpc from the Galactic centre.  相似文献

We present results from observations of H110 α recombination-line emission at 4.874 GHz and the related 4.8-GHz continuum emission towards the Carina nebula using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. These data provide information on the velocity, morphology and excitation parameters of the ionized gas associated with the two bright H  ii regions within the nebula, Car I and Car II. They are consistent with both Car I and Car II being expanding ionization fronts arising from the massive star clusters Trumpler 14 and Trumpler 16, respectively. The overall continuum emission distribution at 4.8 GHz is similar to that at lower frequencies. For Car I, two compact sources are revealed that are likely to be young H  ii regions associated with triggered star formation. These results provide the first evidence of ongoing star formation in the northern region of the nebula. A close association between Car I and the molecular gas is consistent with a scenario in which Car I is currently carving out a cavity within the northern molecular cloud. The complicated kinematics associated with Car II point to expansion from at least two different centres. All that is left of the molecular cloud in this region are clumps of dense gas and dust which are likely to be responsible for shaping the striking morphology of the Car II components.  相似文献

We present results from 30 nights of observations of the open cluster NGC 7789 with the Wide Field Camera on the Isaac Newton Telescope, La Palma. From ∼900 epochs, we obtained light curves and Sloan   r '− i '  colours for ∼33 000 stars, with ∼2400 stars having better than 1 per cent precision. We expected to detect ∼2 transiting hot Jupiter planets if 1 per cent of stars host such a companion and a typical hot Jupiter radius is  ∼1.2  R J  . We find 24 transit candidates, 14 of which we can assign a period. We rule out the transiting planet model for 21 of these candidates using various robust arguments. For two candidates, we are unable to decide on their nature, although it seems most likely that they are eclipsing binaries as well. We have one candidate exhibiting a single eclipse, for which we derive a radius of  1.81+0.09−0.00  R J  . Three candidates remain that require follow-up observations in order to determine their nature.  相似文献

Stellar photometry derived from the INT/WFC Photometric Hα Survey (IPHAS) of the Northern Galactic plane can be used to identify large, reliable samples of A0–A5 stars. For every A-type star, so identified, it is also possible to derive individual reddening and distance estimates, under the assumption that most selected objects are on or near the main sequence, at a mean absolute r ' magnitude of 1.5–1.6. This study presents the method for obtaining such samples and shows that the known reddenings and distances to the open clusters NGC 7510 and NGC 7790 are successfully recovered. A sample of over 1000 A-type stars is then obtained from IPHAS data in the magnitude range  13.5 < r ' < 20  from the region of sky including the massive northern OB association Cyg OB2. An analysis of these data reveals a concentration of ∼200 A stars over an area about a degree across, offset mainly to the south of the known 1–3 Myr old OB stars in Cyg OB2: their dereddened r ' magnitudes fall in the range 11.8–12.5. These are consistent with a ∼7 Myr old stellar population at distance modulus DM = 10.8, or with an age of ∼5 Myr at DM = 11.2. The number of A-type stars found in this clustering alone is consistent with a lower limit to the cluster mass of  ∼104 M  .  相似文献

We present indications of rotation in the galaxy cluster A2107 by a method that searches for the maximum gradient in the velocity field in a flat disc-like model of a cluster. Galaxies from cumulative subsamples containing more and more distant members from the cluster centre are projected on to an axis passing through the centre and we apply a linear regression model on the projected distances x and the line-of-sight velocities V . The axis with the maximum linear correlation coefficient   r max= max[ r ( V , x )]  defines the direction of the maximum velocity gradient, and consequently it presents the major axis of the apparently elliptical cluster. Because the effects of rotation are subtle, we put strong emphasis on the estimation of the uncertainties of the results by implementing different bootstrap techniques. We have found that rotational effects are more strongly expressed at distances of 0.26–0.54 Mpc from the cluster centre. The total virial mass of the cluster is  (3.2 ± 0.6) × 1014 M  , while the virial mass, corrected for rotation, is  (2.8 ± 0.5) × 1014 M  .  相似文献

Using improved techniques, high-quality CCD uvbyVI C photometry has been obtained for the 14th magnitude eclipsing binaries HV 1620 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and HV 2241 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). IUE ultraviolet spectrophotometry was also obtained. These data have been analysed using the Wilson & Devinney synthetic light-curve code and Kurucz model atmospheres. Both systems are semi-detached and appear to have undergone mass exchange. In HV 1620 the mass ratio and the effective temperatures of the primary and secondary are q  =  M 2/ M 1 = 0.68 ± 0.03, T eff,1 = 33 000 ± 4500 K and T eff,2 = 24 000 ± 3500 K. The corresponding values for HV 2241 are 0.53 ± 0.01, 27 000 ± 3000 K and 20 200 ± 1500 K. Using the radial-velocity curves obtained by Niemela & Bassino with a 1-m telescope, we find that both systems are massive, as expected. Reddening considerations suggest both systems may lie towards the rear of their respective Clouds.  相似文献
