The centrifugal motion of liquid, solid, and gaseous particles within the symmetrical lunar dumbbell and prolate droplets is studied. The migration of dense particles away from the rotational axis and light particles towards the axis has been observed in many cases. A method for determining the temperatures of formation of the globules is presented which depends on the comparison between the prediction of simple models, and the observed position of the particles within a globule. The globules examined show initial formation temperatures in the range 1800–2000 K. The study strongly supports the hypothesis that most lunar globules result from meteorite impact.  相似文献

We study the influence and structure of the magnetic field in the early phases of low-mass star formation using polarization maps of Bok globules at a wavelength of 850 μm, obtained with the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We discuss observations of the following sources: CB 26—a small globule with a nearly dispersed dense core and a young and large circumstellar disk, CB 54—a large globule with a massive dense core and a deeply embedded young stellar cluster, and B 335, CB 230, and CB 244—three nearby, relatively isolated small globules with low-mass protostellar cores. We find strongly aligned polarization vectors in the case of CB 26, B 335, and CB 230, whereas the vector orientations in the case of CB 54 and CB 244 are more or less randomly distributed. The degree of polarization, amounting to several percent, was found to decrease toward the center in each source. Assuming dichroic emission by aligned non-spherical grains as the polarization mechanism, where the magnetic field plays a role in the alignment process, we derive magnetic field strengths and structures from the observed polarization patterns. We compare the magnetic field topology with the morphology and outflow directions of the globules. In the Class 0 sources B 335, CB 230, and CB 244, the magnetic field is oriented almost perpendicular to the ouflow direction. In contrast, the inclination between outflow axis and magnetic field direction is much more moderate (36°) in the more evolved Class I source CB26.  相似文献

Gravitational settling of dust grains in dark clouds has been considered. It has been shown that such a process gives rise to a modification of the grain size distribution. Starting with a simple model of uniform spherical cloud and normal interstellar grain size distribution for the dust we derive expressions for the modified grain size distribution function, average grain size and extinction as functions of distance from the cloud's center and the age of the cloud. The mean grain size increases towards the center of the cloud as does the extinction. Results of the numerical evaluation of these quantities have been discussed with their implications for the observations of anomalous reddening and polarization within dark clouds and Bok globules.  相似文献

Abstract— We have investigated the kinematics of the separation of iron globules from chondrules during chondrule formation. A simple model, which assumes that the system has no angular momentum, was used to calculate the energy of a system with an iron globule and a chondrule. The energies of three different states were calculated: 1) a melted iron globule fully embedded in a melted chondrule, 2) a melted iron globule on the surface of a melted chondrule, and 3) a melted iron globule being separated from a melted chondrule. We also calculated the lowest energy shape for a melted iron globule on the surface of a melted chondrule, and compared our result with the shapes of four natural samples of chondrules and iron globules in thin sections. The shapes were calculated using an assumed value for the interface energy between the four couples of melted chondrules and the iron globules, and agree well with the natural shapes of chondrules and iron globules. The results of our calculations show that the iron globules of these four samples would be strongly bound to the surface of the melted chondrule during chondrule formation, and separation would be difficult, if the iron globules had been on the surface of precursors of these chondrules. Our results also show that if these iron globules were initially inside and transported to the surface of the melted chondrule, most of them would be ejected from the inside to outside because of surface tension forces, as long as the energy losses due to viscous dissipation when the globules pass through the surface of melted chondrules were sufficiently small. Although further improvement of the model is required, our results demonstrate that this ejection process may be responsible for the depletion of siderophile elements in natural chondrules.  相似文献

Two Bok globules, L1253 (CB246) and CB34, have been mapped in the C2S (21–10) transition and in the NH3 (1, 1) and NH3 (2, 2) inversion transitions, respectively. By comparing the C2S map of L1253 (CB246) with the NH3 map of the same globule from Lemme et al., a clumped onion structure results as a consequence of the chemical and dynamical evolution of the object. From the derived parameters it appears that both L1253 (CB246) and CB34 are close to virial equilibrium.  相似文献

We perform N -body simulations of encounters between spherical systems surrounded by a spherical halo. Following a preceding paper with a similar aim, the initial systems include a spherical Jaffe model for the luminous matter and a Hernquist model for the halo. The merger remnants from this sample are mainly slowly rotating, prolate spheroids with a radially anisotropic velocity distribution. The results are compared with real-life ellipticals and with the models without halo in Paper I. We argue that elliptical galaxies with evidence of dark matter could be formed in the field via a merger of spheroids surrounded by a dark matter halo, while ellipticals with no evidence of dark matter might be formed via a merger of two spheroids in a cluster.  相似文献

In a cold dark matter (CDM) framework of structure formation, the dark matter haloes around galaxies assemble through successive mergers with smaller haloes. This merging process is not completely efficient, and hundreds of surviving halo cores, or subhaloes, are expected to remain in orbit within the halo of a galaxy like the Milky Way. While the dozen visible satellites of the Milky Way may trace some of these subhaloes, the majority are currently undetected. A large number of high-velocity clouds (HVCs) of neutral hydrogen are observed around the Milky Way, and it is plausible that some of the HVCs may trace subhaloes undetected in the optical. Confirming the existence of concentrations of dark matter associated with even a few of the HVCs would represent a dramatic step forward in our attempts to understand the nature of dark matter. Supersymmetric (SUSY) extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics currently suggest neutralinos as a natural well-motivated candidate for the non-baryonic dark matter of the universe. If this is indeed the case, then it may be possible to detect dark matter indirectly as it annihilates into neutrinos, photons or positrons. In particular, the centres of subhaloes might show up as point sources in gamma-ray observations. In this work, we consider the possibility that some of the unidentified EGRET γ-ray sources trace annihilating neutralino dark matter in the dark substructure of the Local Group. We compare the observed positions and fluxes of both the unidentified EGRET sources and the HVCs with the positions and fluxes predicted by a model of halo substructure, to determine up to what extent any of these three populations could be associated.  相似文献

Abstract— We report a comprehensive imaging study including confocal microRaman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and 3‐D extended focal imaging light microscopy of carbonate globules throughout a depth profile of the Martian meteorite Allan Hills (ALH) 84001 and similar objects in mantle peridotite xenoliths from the Bockfjorden volcanic complex (BVC), Svalbard. Carbonate and iron oxide zoning in ALH 84001 is similar to that seen in BVC globules. Hematite appears to be present in all ALH 84001 carbonate‐bearing assemblages except within a magnesite outer rim found in some globules. Macromolecular carbon (MMC) was found in intimate association with magnetite in both ALH 84001 and BVC carbonates. The MMC synthesis mechanism appears similar to established reactions within the Fe‐C‐O system. By inference to a terrestrial analogue of mantle origin (BVC), these results appear to represent the first measurements of the products of an abiotic MMC synthesis mechanism in Martian samples. Furthermore, the ubiquitous but heterogeneous distribution of hematite throughout carbonate globules in ALH 84001 may be partly responsible for some of the wide range in measured oxygen isotopes reported in previous studies. Using BVC carbonates as a suitable analogue, we postulate that a low temperature hydrothermal model of ALH 84001 globule formation is most likely, although alteration (decarbonation) of a subset of globules possibly occurred during a later impact event.  相似文献

During CO observations of new Southern objects with the 15-m SEST mm telescope (Cerro La Silla, Chile) we have found that the globule connected with the object CLN127-128 rotates with an angular velocity 4.3 · 10-14 s-1, which corresponds to the velocity of extremely fast rotating globules. The object CLN127-128 is a chain of three stars; two of them are connected with bright nebulae, and the third is a suspected Herbig Ae/Be star. All three stars are bright in near IR, which is specific for the existence of circumstellar shells (or disks) around them. The specific angular momentum of the globule confirms that it is in virial equilibrium. Besides the finding of a rotating globule, CO observations suggest the presence of a blue-shifted outflow from CLN127-128 with a velocity of -1.1 km/s (in the system connected with the globule).  相似文献

We argue that observations on Milky Way and dwarf spheroidals imply existence of individual haloes around dwarf spheroidals. If neutrinos (or any other ‘hot’ particle) provide the dark matter then we show that: (i) Embedding of visible matter inside large (∼ few Mpc) dark matter islands is observationally untenable. (ii) Dwarf spheroidals possess dark matter haloes of about 10 kpc radius around them, and have an (M/L) ratio of about 104. (iii) The haloes of spiral galaxies (e.g. Milky Way) extend to about 100 kpc in radius. If ‘cold’ dark matter makes up the haloes, then no significant constraints are obtained. We discuss briefly the effect of these constraints on larger scales.  相似文献

The cooling of gas in the centres of dark matter haloes is expected to lead to a more concentrated dark matter distribution. The response of dark matter to the condensation of baryons is usually calculated using the model of adiabatic contraction, which assumes spherical symmetry and circular orbits. Following Gnedin et al., we improve this model by modifying the assumed invariant from M ( r ) r to     , where r and     are the current and orbit-averaged particle positions. We explore the effect of the bulge in the inner regions of the halo for different values of the bulge-to-disc mass ratio. We find that the bulge makes the velocity curve rise faster in the inner regions of the halo. We present an analytical fitting curve that describes the velocity curve of the halo after dissipation. The results should be useful for dark matter detection studies.  相似文献

In regions of very high dark matter density such as the Galactic Centre, the capture and annihilation of WIMP dark matter by stars has the potential to significantly alter their evolution. We describe the dark stellar evolution code D ark S tars , and present a series of detailed grids of WIMP-influenced stellar models for main-sequence stars. We describe the changes in stellar structure and main-sequence evolution which occur as a function of the rate of energy injection by WIMPs, for masses of  0.3–2.0 M  and metallicities   Z = 0.0003–0.02  . We show what rates of energy injection can be obtained using realistic orbital parameters for stars at the Galactic Centre, including detailed consideration of the velocity and density profiles of dark matter. Capture and annihilation rates are strongly boosted when stars follow elliptical rather than circular orbits. If there is a spike of dark matter induced by the supermassive black hole at the Galactic Centre, single solar mass stars following orbits with periods as long as 50 yr and eccentricities as low as 0.9 could be significantly affected. Binary systems with similar periods about the Galactic Centre could be affected on even less eccentric orbits. The most striking observational effect of this scenario would be the existence of a binary consisting of a low-mass protostar and a higher mass evolved star. The observation of low-mass stars and/or binaries on such orbits would either provide a detection of WIMP dark matter, or place stringent limits on the combination of the WIMP mass, spin-dependent nuclear-scattering cross-section, halo density and velocity distribution near the Galactic Centre. In some cases, the derived limits on the WIMP mass and spin-dependent nuclear-scattering cross-section would be of comparable sensitivity to current direct-detection experiments.  相似文献

Distances to nine dark globules are determined by a method using optical ( VRI ) and near-infrared (near-IR) ( JHK ) photometry of stars projected towards the field containing the globules. In this method, we compute intrinsic colour indices of stars projected towards the direction of the globule by dereddening the observed colour indices using various trial values of extinction   A V   and a standard extinction law. These computed intrinsic colour indices for each star are then compared with the intrinsic colour indices of normal main-sequence stars and a spectral type is assigned to the star for which the computed colour indices best match with the standard intrinsic colour indices. Distances ( d ) to the stars are determined using the   A V   and absolute magnitude  ( MV )  corresponding to the spectral types thus obtained. A distance versus extinction plot is made and the distance at which   A V   undergoes a sharp rise is taken to be the distance to the globule. All the clouds studied in this work are in the distance range 160–400 pc. The estimated distances to dark globules LDN 544, LDN 549, LDN 567, LDN 543, LDN 1113, LDN 1031, LDN 1225, LDN 1252 and LDN 1257 are  180 ± 35, 200 ± 40, 180 ± 35, 160 ± 30, 350 ± 70, 200 ± 40, 400 ± 80, 250 ± 50  and 250 ± 50 pc, respectively. Using the distances determined, we have estimated the masses of the globules and the far-IR luminosity of the IRAS sources associated with them. The mass of the clouds studied are in the range  10–200 M  .  相似文献

In this paper we consider the use of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) as distance markers to study the unification of dark energy and dark matter in the context of the so-called generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) model. We consider that the GRB luminosity may be estimated from its variability and time-lag, and we also use the so-called Ghirlanda relation. We evaluate the improvements expected once more GRBs and their redshift become available. We show that although GRBs allow for extending the Hubble diagram to higher redshifts, its use as a dark energy probe is limited when compared to Type Ia supernovae. We find that the information from GRBs can provide some bounds on the amount of dark matter and dark energy independently of the equation of state. This is particularly evident for XCDM-type models, which are, for low redshifts  ( z ≤ 2)  , degenerate with the GCG.  相似文献

The recently discovered groups of submillimeter starless condensations at the junction of HII regions and molecular clouds, which are invisible in the optical and near IR ranges, are similar in many ways to visible radial systems of dark globules, specifically, in their densities of molecular hydrogen, sizes, proximity to bright stars of early classes (which may be responsible for their formation), etc. It is proposed that the groups of submm starless condensations are radial systems of dark globules that are optically invisible because they lie behind dark clouds. Thus, it is shown that these groups of condensations are not a new type of object.  相似文献

One explanation for the disparity between cold dark matter (CDM) predictions of galaxy numbers and observations could be that there are numerous dark galaxies in the Universe. These galaxies may still contain baryons, but no stars, and may be detectable in the 21-cm line of atomic hydrogen. The results of surveys for such objects, and simulations that do/do not predict their existence, are controversial. In this paper, we use an analytical model of galaxy formation, consistent with CDM, to first show that dark galaxies are certainly a prediction of the model. Secondly, we show that objects like VIRGOHI21, a dark galaxy candidate recently discovered by us, while rare are predicted by the model. Thirdly, we show that previous 'blind' H  i surveys have placed few constraints on the existence of dark galaxies. This is because they have either lacked the sensitivity and/or velocity resolution or have not had the required detailed optical follow up. We look forward to new 21-cm blind surveys [Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey and Arecibo Galactic Environments Survey (AGES)] using the Arecibo multibeam instrument which should find large numbers of dark galaxies if they exist.  相似文献

We determine a crucial feature of the dark halo density distribution from the fact that the luminous matter dominates the gravitational potential at about one disc scalelength R d, but at the optical edge     the dark matter has already become the main component of the galaxy density. From the kinematics of 137 spirals we find that the dark matter halo density profiles are self-similar at least out to R opt and show core radii much larger than the corresponding disc scalelengths. The luminous regions of spirals consist of stellar discs embedded in dark haloes with roughly constant density. This invariant dark matter profile is very difficult to reconcile with the fundamental properties of the density distribution of cold dark matter haloes. With respect to previous work, the present evidence is obtained by means of a robust method and for a large and complete sample of normal spirals.  相似文献

The Modified Chaplygin Gas (MCG) model belongs to the class of a unified models of dark energy and dark matter. In this paper, we have modeled MCG in the framework of f-essence cosmology. By constructing an equation connecting the MCG and the f-essence, we solve it to obtain explicitly the pressure and energy density of MCG. As special cases, we obtain both positive and negative pressure solutions for suitable choices of free parameters. In this paper we have studied the anisotropic and homogeneous Bianchi type-I universe filled with interacting Dark matter and Holographic dark energy. Here we discussed two models, in first model the solutions of the field equations are obtained for constant value of deceleration parameter where as in the second model the solutions of the field equations are obtained for special form of deceleration parameter. It is shown that for suitable choice of interaction between dark matter and holographic dark energy there is no coincidence problem (unlike ΛCDM). Also, in all the resulting models the anisotropy of expansion dies out very quickly and attains isotropy after some finite time. The Statefinder diagnostic is applied to both the models in order to distinguish between our dark energy models with other existing dark energy models. The physical and geometrical aspects of the models are also discussed.  相似文献
