Oriented cores have been secured from fourteen sites in the Great Rhodesian Dyke, by means of a portable sampling drill. The natural remanent magnetizations showed high dispersion at all sites except one. After demagnetization in alternating magnetic fields, nine sites gave well grouped directions of primary magnetization. These sites include five rock types distributed among three Complexes of the Great Dyke and two satellite dykes, over 200 miles of the length of the Dyke and through several thousand feet in depth as the rocks were originally intruded. The nine site mean directions of primary magnetization are closely grouped and are believed to represent directions of thermo-remanent magnetization at the date of intrusion of the Great Dyke. It is suggested that the dates of magnetization at the sites must cover a sufficient time interval to give a mean pole position close to the axial geocentric dipole freed from secular variation. On the assumption of a geocentric dipole field, the position of the mean South magnetic pole is 211/2 °N, 611/2 °E, with radius of 95 per cent confidence 9°. This pole position is close to positions of North magnetic poles given by studies of the palaeo-magnetism of the Pilansberg Dykes and Bushveld gabbro.  相似文献

A secular variation record of the geomagnetic field direction for the last 6.5  kyr has been obtained from the magnetization of sediment cores from Erhai Lake, southwest China. In order to make a comparison with this record, secular variation in east-central China was investigated by combining available magnetic field data from historical records and archaeomagnetic measurements since about 350 bc . The secular variation in Erhai Lake shows features consistent with the combined record, except for the oldest three observed declination swings in Sian from 720 to 900 ad . Many features of declination and inclination in China also occur in Japan. From 500 to 1000 ad , declination was westerly ranging from about −20° to −5° in Erhai Lake, east-central China, and Japan.  相似文献

Summary. Detailed palaeomagnetic results from a rapidly deposited 12.5-m Younger Yoldia Clay sequence of age around 14 000 B.P. at the coast cliff at Nørre Lyngby (northern Jutland, Denmark) and a 2-m Older Yoldia Clay sequence of age somewhere between 23 000 and 40 000 B.P. are presented and discussed. The Younger Yoldia Clay spans some 1000–1500 yr and shows swings in inclination and declination of about that period, and also more rapid oscillations which are particularly marked in inclination, showing that rapid secular variations as have occurred during historic times were indeed also present back in time. There exist easterly declinations of 80° to 90° in the upper half of the Younger Yoldia Clay which cause the virtual geomagnetic pole to migrate clockwise to around 50° away from the rotation pole. This we name the 'Nørre Lyngby declination excursion'.
In the Older Yoldia Clay, as well as secular variations in both declination and inclination, significant low inclination values are found, confirming the existence of the recently named 'Rubjerg low inclination excursion', with the virtual geomagnetic pole moving first in a clockwise then in an anticlockwise sense at 40° to 60° away from the rotation pole.
It is therefore inferred that models for the Earth's geomagnetic field should involve at least local rapid eastward as well as westward 'drift' of the non-dipole field components at various times in the past.  相似文献

Summary. The secular variation of the declination, inclination and total force of the geomagnetic field has been plotted for 74 locations in North America. A comparison of the occurrences of maxima and minima in the SV curves from different stations shows little evidence of drift in North America. Although a declination maximum exhibits westward drift up to 1915, all other extrema in declination, inclination and total intensity occur almost simultaneously over a wide area. The major feature of SV in North America appears to be a 4000 nT decrease in the total field since 1850, which may be due to a decrease in the dipole moment coupled with the decay of a large non-dipole anomaly situated under the continent. Short-period changes in the rate of decrease are possibly jerks of the magnetic field. Maximum entropy spectral analysis of all three components of the field indicates periods of 102 and 53 yr.  相似文献

Summary. A 10 000 yr continuous secular variation record from intensively dated lake sediments in SE Australia has been subjected to periodogram and maximum entropy method analysis. Tests on synthetic data reveal some of the limitations of the latter method, particularly when applied to complex number series. Anticlockwise precession of the magnetic vector at a period of 5000 ± 1000 yr is tentatively ascribed to dipole precession, and clockwise precession at a period of about 2800 yr is probably due to westward drift of features of the non-dipole field.
The effect of calibrating the radiocarbon time-scale is important and results in periodicity shifts of up to 25 per cent. Even for well-dated lacustrine sequences power spectra are poorly constrained: it is thus possible that the geomagnetic secular variation on a time-scale of thousands of years is more uniform than often supposed. Mismatches between declination and inclination spectra can arise as a natural consequence of certain types of source mechanism and should not be simply attributed to figments of the analysis employed.  相似文献

Summary Nine basic dykes were sampled near Angmagssalik, east Greenland. Specimens have been treated by alternating field demagnetization in 11 steps up to 3000 (peak) oersted (300 ml). The 'cleaned' direction at all sites is recognized after treatment at 150 oersted. All specimens are reversely magnetized. The mean of the site mean directions has declination = 182°.0, inclination =−66°.9, it = 45, α95= 7°.7. This direction yields a palaeomagnetic pole (reversed) at 73°.4N, 139°.5E ( dp = 10°.7, dm = 12°.9) which is near, but significantly different from, that derived from lower Tertiary rocks in Greenland, namely 63°.2N, 184°.6E ( A 95= 4°.5). K-Ar ages of the nine dykes, based upon whole-rock and mineral separates, range from mid-Tertiary to Cambrian. It is impossible to reconcile these ages with the palaeomagnetic results. The palaeomagnetic evidence, supported by geological inference, suggests that all nine dykes are members of the east Greenland lower Tertiary dyke swarm, designated THOL1, of probable age c. 52 Ma.
The difference between the poles given above can be explained by supposing that the sampling area has tipped about a horizontal axis directed along 013°/193°, the angle of rotation being 13° (± 11°) anti-clockwise, when the axis is viewed along 013°. This local effect could have been due to block faulting when the north-east Atlantic started to open, or may be attributed to upwarping of the coast due to the weight of the ice-cap inland.  相似文献

Measurements are described of the directions of remanent magnetization of 89 samples from nine lava flows and red beds. Stable remanent magnetization was isolated after AC demagnetizing. All the units have normal remanent magnetization, except one lava flow which yields a direction toward the north with positive inclination. From the mean direction of stable remanence, referred to the bedding, of each unit a virtual geomagnetic pole is computed; the mean of eight of these poles is 90·6 °E, 84·2° South, α95= 4·7° and represents the position of the palaeomagnetic pole for the exposures of the Sierra de Los Condores group from El Estrecho-Cerro Libertad. The position of this pole is reasonably close to the positions of the South American Lower Cretaceous palaeomagnetic poles for the Serra Geral and Vulcanitas Cerro Colorado formations and the trachybasaltic dykes from Rio Los Molinos. This supports the interpretations that the South Atlantic Ocean was formed in Lower Cretaceous times and that the Earth's magnetic field was on average similar to that of a geocentric dipole in South America in the Lower Cretaceous, and suggests that there has not been substantial relative movements between Central Argentina and Southern Brazil.  相似文献

Summary. Geomagnetic declination and inclination secular variation curves have been constructed back to 6000 yr bp from palaeomagnetic measurements of sediments cored in Lakes Volvi, Trikhonis and Begoritis, Greece. They have been dated by palynological studies and by comparison with observatory and archaeomagnetic records. Radiocarbon ages are all affected by the'old carbon'factor. Cores from all three lakes contain a thin ash layer which we associate with the Pompeii eruption of Vesuvius in ad 79. Averaged curves of secular variations of declination and inclination have been computed for the whole study. The broader scale pattern of secular variations is basically similar to lake sediment records from the UK, Poland and Switzerland, though finer detail in the structure of some of the principal features is resolved.  相似文献

Summary. Estimates of the secular variation in the Red Sea over the period 1959 to 1972 have been obtained from an analysis of marine magnetic data. A total of 318 crossings of ships' tracks were used to determine the mean secular variation for the intervals 1959–72, 1959–65 and 1965–72. The mean secular variation 1959–72 shows a marked northward increase from approximately -10 nT/yr at 13°N to +27 nT/yr at 24°N. North of this, the data suggest a small decrease to + 25 nT/yr at 27° N. These values are consistent with the secular variation recorded at the nearby geomagnetic observatory at Helwan, Egypt, but less than those predicted by the 1965 IGRF for the same period.
Comparison of the mean secular variations for 1959–65 and 1965–72 yields a rough estimate of the secular acceleration of - 1.5 nT yr−2. Analysis of the cross-over information, corrected for the latitude dependence of the secular variation, shows a regular decrease in the secular change over the period 1959–72 at all latitudes of about -1 nTyr−2. This secular acceleration makes a substantial contribution to the overall secular change in the Red Sea and as such must be included in the correction of magnetic data covering more than a few years.  相似文献

Palaeomagnetic measurements on a giant core sample 20 cm in diameter and 7.38 m long collected from Mizushima-Nada, the Inland Sea. Japan (Seto Naikai) provide evidence of post-depositional magnetization. the geomagnetic secular variation from about 4000 to 8000 yr BP is characterized by a long period of westerly declination before 6600 yr BP. the maximum deflection is beyond 50°W during this period. the palaeomagnetic record further demonstrates that there is a hiatus over 3000 yr in sedimentation due 10 the sea-level change around 6.85 m from sea bottom, and that the lower limit of the sea-level around 8000 yr BP is 18.5 m beneath the present sea-level.  相似文献

A palaeomagnetic pole position, derived from a precisely dated primary remanence, with minimal uncertainties due to secular variation and structural correction, has been obtained for China's largest dyke swarm, which trends for about 1000 km in a NNW direction across the North China craton. Positive palaeomagnetic contact tests on two dykes signify that the remanent magnetization is primary and formed during initial cooling of the intrusions. The age of one of these dykes, based on U–Pb dating of primary zircon, is 1769.1 ± 2.5 Ma. The mean palaeomagnetic direction for 19 dykes, after structural correction, is D  = 36°, I  = − 5°, k  = 63, α 95 = 4°, yielding a palaeomagnetic pole at Plat=36°N, Plong=247°E, dp  = 2°, dm  = 4° and a palaeolatitude of 2.6°S. Comparison of this pole position with others of similar age from the Canadian Shield allows a continental reconstruction that is compatible with a more or less unchanged configuration of Laurentia, Siberia and the North China craton since about 1800 Ma  相似文献

Summary. One hundred and fifty oriented samples were collected from 12 sites from the Tertiary basalts of Wadi Abu Tereifiya (30.0°N, 32.1° E). After alternating field demagnetization the mean direction of the natural remanent magnetization is, D = 187.9°, I = -20.8° with α95= 5.8°. This yields a palaeopole at 69.4°N, 188.3° E.
Also, 30 oriented samples were collected from two sites from Mandisha in Bahariya Oasis (28.4°N, 28.9° E). After cleaning, the mean direction of the NRM is D = 191.0°, I = 5.2° with α95= 9.9°. This yields a palaeopole position at 58.2°N, 186.7° E.
Besides, the NRM of 70 oriented samples collected from seven dioritic dykes from Wadi Abu Shihat (26.3°N, 33.2° E) was found to have a mean direction, D = 142.0°, I = -0.3°, which leads to a palaeopole position at, 44.9°N, 273.0° E. This agrees with other Mesozoic pole positions from Africa.  相似文献

Summary. The Cordova gabbro of southern Ontario intrudes 1300 Myr old volcanic rocks of the Hastings Lowlands in the Grenville Structural Province. Three distinct vector magnetizations (A, B and C) have been isolated, using a combination of stable endpoints, subtracted vectors from orthogonal vector plots and converging remagnetization circles. The A magnetization, with mean direction D = 294° I =– 55.5° ( k = 42, α95= 5.5°, N = 18 sites), is a high coercivity, high blocking temperature remanence recorded by 49 samples. The B magnetization was isolated in 33 samples and has a mean direction D = 305.5° I =– 1.5° ( k = 24, α95, N = 11 sites). B has lower coercivities and blocking temperatures than A where the two are superimposed. The A and B palaeopoles, 151°E, 10.5°S ( dp = 6°, dm = 8°) and 165.5°E, 24°N ( dp = 5°, dm = 9.5°), fall on the Grenville Track around 900 and 820 Ma respectively. The A and B magnetizations thus date from uplift and cooling following the Grenvillian orogeny. The third magnetization, the C component, has been isolated in 23 samples. Its mean direction is D = 180° I = 27.5° ( k = 18, α95= 10.5°, N = 12 sites). The C is a low coercivity, low blocking temperature overprint of A and B. Its palaeopole, 102°E, 31°N ( dp = 6.5°, dm = 12°), is unlike post-1300 Precambrian poles for cratonic North America but matches Silurian and late Ordovician poles. 40Ar/39Ar plateau ages of 446 and 447 Ma determined by Lopez-Martinez and York for plagioclases from one of the Cordova samples confirm this age assignment. The C magnetization therefore records a previously unrecognized mild thermal or hydrothermal event that occurred in Palaeozoic time, long after the Grenvillian orogeny.  相似文献

Summary. A palaeomagnetic record of the geomagnetic secular variation during the last 10000 years has been obtained from 10 cores of sediment from Loch Lomond, Scotland, Lake Windermere, North England, and Llyn Geirionydd, North Wales. A time-scale is provided by 30 radiocarbon age determinations and pollen analyses on several of the cores. The main swings and much fine detail of both declination and inclination records repeat well between cores and between lakes, and the overall record is much more detailed than previous European records.
The new record shows that neither declination nor inclination swings have been periodic over the past 10000 years, but that the main swings have become progressively shorter in duration during that time. Each swing is characterized by fine detail which enables use of the record as a secondary method of dating other European sediments.
The motion of the geomagnetic vector has been predominantly clockwise throughout the time period spanned, but confirms a period of anticlockwise motion from 1100 to 600 bp first discovered by British archaeomagnetic investigations. The record agrees with British and Czechoslovakian archaeomagnetic records, but not with Japanese archaeomagnetic or North American lake sediment records. This suggests that the secular changes are controlled by local growing and decaying, drifting sources, rather than by wobbling of the main geomagnetic dipole.  相似文献

Summary. Measurements of the declination, inclination and intensity of the archaeomagnetic field have been made on samples collected from 175 sites in south-eastern Europe. The results reveal both long and short term fluctuations in the ancient virtual dipole moment as well as providing a record of the virtual pole position over an 8000 yr period.  相似文献

New palaeomagnetic data from the Lower and Middle Cambrian sedimentary rocks of northern Siberia are presented. During stepwise thermal demagnetization the stable characteristic remanence (ChRM) directions have been isolated for three Cambrian formations. Both polarities have been observed, and mean ChRM directions (for normal polarity) are: Kessyusa Formation (Lower Cambrian) D = 145°, I = -40°, N = 12, α95= 12.8°; pole position: φ= 38°S, A = 165°E; Erkeket Formation (Lower Cambrian, stratigraphically highly) D = 152°, I = - 47°, N = 23, α95= 6.8°; pole position: φ= 45°S, A = 159°E; Yunkyulyabit-Yuryakh Formation (Middle Cambrian) D = 166°, I = - 33°, N = 38, α95= 4.6°; pole position: φ= 36°S, L = 140°E. These poles are in good agreement with the apparent polar wander path based on the bulk of existing Cambrian palaeomagnetic data from the Siberian platform. In Cambrian times, the Siberian platform probably occupied southerly latitudes stretching from about 35° to 0°, and was oriented 'reversely' with respect to its present position. Siberia moved northwards during the Cambrian by about 10° of latitude. This movement was accompanied by anticlockwise rotation of about 30°. The magnetostratigraphic results show the predominance of reversed polarity in the Early Cambrian and an approximately equal occurrence of both polarities in the part of the Middle Cambrian studied. These results are in good agreement with the palaeomagnetic polarity timescale for the Cambrian of the Siberian platform constructed previously by Khramov et al. (1987).  相似文献

Continental red sandstone and siltstone rocks of the Dewey Lake (Quartermaster) Formation at Maroon Cliffs, near Carlsbad, New Mexico, are characterized by two components of magnetization with partially overlapping laboratory unblocking temperature spectra. Both magnetizations display high coercivities (>100 mT), probably residing in haematite. A north-directed magnetization with steep positive inclination unblocks between 100 and 650 °C, isolating a predominantly northwest-directed magnetization, with shallow inclination, of near uniform normal polarity and maximum unblocking temperatures of 680 °C.
We collected samples from 24 palaeomagnetic sites (i.e. individual beds) from a ~60 m thick section of flat-lying strata disconformably overlying carbonate and evaporite rocks of the Rustler Formation. The upper member of the Rustler Formation contains a Late Permian (early Changxingian) marine invertebrate and conodont fauna. Of the sampled sites, four yield only steep magnetizations, interpreted to be recent overprints. Eight sites did not yield well-grouped site means and were excluded from the final calculations. The formation mean (dec = 337.7°, inc = 9.2°; k = 31.6, α 95 = 7.8°, N = 12 sites) defines a palaeomagnetic pole located at 55.2°N, 117.5°E, in good agreement with other Late Permian North American cratonic poles.
Correlation of the short polarity sequence of this section of Dewey Lake strata is unambiguous. Compared with the polarity stratigraphy of marine sections in Asia, and supported by isotopic age determinations on a widespread bentonite bed in Dewey Lake strata in west Texas (approximately 251 Ma) and fossil data for the underlying Rustler Formation, the magnetostratigraphy is consistent with deposition of the Dewey Lake Formation during the latest Changxingian (Late Permian) stage.  相似文献

Summary. A new roadcut has enabled us to sample the south-dipping limb of the Montmartin syncline for a palaeomagnetic reevaluation of an earlier result published by Jones, Van der Voo & Bonhommet. In combination with the results previously published in 1979 for the north-dipping beds of the syncline, a conclusively negative fold test is obtained. The resulting magnetization (declination/inclination =206°/-3°, α95= 12°, palaeopole at 38°S, 325°E) is interpreted to be of Late Carboniferous age, not Late Devonian as thought earlier. Simultaneously, we have re-evaluated the age of the rocks, previously thought to be Late Devonian on the basis of Acritarchs, Chitinozoans and spores. It has not been possible to reconfirm these fossils, not even in the same samples as studied originally; in contrast, the regional presence of Early Palaeozoic fossils suggests to us an age similar to that of other red beds in the Arrnorican Massif, which have been dated as Early Ordovician. The geodynamic implications of our finding that the Montmartin rocks are completely remagnetized, however, are of no great consequence for the geodynamics of the Hercynian belt. Pre-folding magnetization obtained from Silurian and Devonian rocks in Spain and Germany argue for the same conclusion as reached erroneously in our earlier study, namely that the Armorican Massif and adjacent parts of Hercynian Europe were adjointed to North America, Great Britain, the Baltic Shield and the Russian Platform since at least Late Devonian time. If a Medio-European ocean existed during the Palaeozoic, it was virtually closed before the mid-Devonian and of insignificant width during Culm deposition in Early Carboniferoirs time.  相似文献

Summary. Fifty-six orientated samples were collected from 13 sites on five dolerite dykes (between lat.14°23°N, long.77°43'E and lat.14°08'N, long. 77°49'E), which adjoin the south-western margin of the Cuddapah basin in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh. After af demagnetization, two dykes (five sites) striking ENE possess similar magnetic directions, (1) D = 57°, 1=-69° (K = 52, α95= 7°) and (2) D = 71°, I = -72° ( K = 260, α95= 5°). Again dykes (3) (three sites), and (4) (two sites) have similar strike (NE) and magnetic directions, D = 64°. I=-7 α( K = 142, α95 = 8°) and D = 53°, I =-8° (K = 142, α95= 6°) and dyke (5) (two sites) striking NW shows D = 320°, I = -34° ( K = 68, α95= 13°). Remanent directions estimated from total field magnetic anomaly data agree well with these results. Synthesis of these data with 10 other published palaeomagnetic studies of Precambrian dolerite dykes on the Indian peninsula, suggest that these three systems of dykes adjoining the Cuddapah basin had been emplaced prior to the basin formation perhaps representing the initial thermal event responsible for the basin development and also that there have been at least three separate periods of dyke emplacement on this shield. The radiometric data, however, are very sparse and these periods cannot be dated with confidence.  相似文献

Palaeomagnetic data are presented from Mid-Silurian (Homerian, Upper Wenlock, ~425 Ma) sediments from the Dingle Peninsula, SW Ireland, which forms part of the northern margin of the Palaeozoic microcontinent of Avalonia. Three remanence components were recognized. After removal of a low-temperature component ('L'), oriented parallel to the present Earth field at the sampling area, two higher-stability components were isolated: an intermediate-unblocking-temperature component ('I') with mean in situ D = 196.9°, I = 11.0°, α 95 = 10.8, with a corresponding palaeopole at 330.0°E, 30.6°S ( dp = 5.6, dm = 11.0), and a high-unblocking-temperature component ('H') with mean tilt-corrected D = 218.6°, I = 22.1°, α 95 = 7.9, with a corresponding palaeopole at 309.5°E, 18.3°S ( dp = 4.4, dm = 8.4). A primary (Wenlock) age is indicated for the 'H'-component by a positive intraformational conglomerate test, whereas the 'I'-component is thought to be a secondary mid-Carboniferous partial remagnetization.
These data confirm that the sector of the Iapetus Ocean between Avalonia and Laurentia was essentially closed, within the limits of palaeomagnetic resolution, by the Wenlock. There is still, however, a discrepancy between the declinations recorded by similar-aged sequences to the north and south of the Iapetus Suture. These point to either an approximately 30° clockwise rotation of the entire Avalonian microcontinent relative to Laurentia during closure, or local vertical axis rotations of the sampling sites in southern Britain.  相似文献
