The presence of nearby discrete cosmic ray (CR) sources can lead to many interesting effects on the observed properties of CRs. In this paper, we study about the possible effects on the CR primary and secondary spectra and also the subsequent effects on the CR secondary-to-primary ratios. For the study, we assume that CRs undergo diffusive propagation in the Galaxy and we neglect the effect of convection, energy losses and reacceleration. In our model, we assume that there exists a uniform and continuous distribution of CR sources in the Galaxy generating a stationary CR background at the Earth. In addition, we also consider the existence of some nearby sources which inject CRs in a discrete space–time model. Assuming a constant CR source power throughout the Galaxy, our study has found that the presence of nearby supernova remnants (SNRs) produces noticeable variations in the primary fluxes mainly above ∼100 GeV n−1, if CRs are assumed to be released instantaneously after the supernova explosion. The variation reaches a value of ∼45 per cent at around 105 GeV n−1. Respect to earlier studies, the variation in the case of the secondaries is found to be almost negligible. We also discuss about the possible effects of the different particle release times from the SNRs. For the particle release time of ∼105 yr, predicted by the diffusive shock acceleration theories in SNRs, we have found that the presence of the nearby SNRs hardly produces any significant effects on the CRs at the Earth.  相似文献

Methanol masers are known to be associated with regions of massive star formation. By studying the distribution of these masers with respect to unidentified EGRET sources, one may be able to identify regions of enhanced star formation leading to either supernova remnants and/or pulsars. In this study, we test for positional coincidences between class II methanol masers and EGRET sources and determine the statistical significance of these coincidences.  相似文献

In this paper, we present high-energy neutrino spectra from 21 Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs), derived from gamma-ray measurements in the GeV–TeV range. We find that only the strongest sources, i.e. G40.5-0.5 in the north and Vela Junior in the south could be detected as single point sources by IceCube or KM3NeT, respectively. For the first time, it is also possible to derive a diffuse signal by applying the observed correlation between gamma-ray emission and radio signal. Radio data from 234 supernova remnants listed in Green’s catalog are used to show that the total diffuse neutrino flux is approximately a factor of 2.5 higher compared to the sources that are resolved so far. We show that the signal at above 10 TeV energies can actually become comparable to the diffuse neutrino flux component from interactions in the interstellar medium. Recently, the IceCube collaboration announced the detection of a first diffuse signal of astrophysical high-energy neutrinos. Directional information cannot unambiguously reveal the nature of the sources at this point due to low statistics. A number of events come from close to the Galactic center and one of the main questions is whether at least a part of the signal can be of Galactic nature. In this paper, we show that the diffuse flux from well-resolved SNRs is at least a factor of 20 below the observed flux.  相似文献

During the last couple of decades of work on the  Σ– D   (radio surface brightness to diameter) relation for supernova remnants (SNRs), it has been generally accepted that no single  Σ– D   relation can be constructed for all SNRs. However, it may still be possible to construct the relations for some classes of SNRs. In our previous paper we analysed  Σ– D   relation(s) for remnants in the dense environments of molecular clouds. The aim of this paper is to examine, in the same context, a class of oxygen-rich SNRs, and to extend the analysis to remnants evolving in lower-density interstellar media, namely Balmer-dominated SNRs. We have obtained good relations with certain similarities to our previous findings – similarities that emphasize, again, the role of ambient density in the evolution of SNRs.  相似文献

The third EGRET catalog contains a large number of unidentified sources. This subset of objects is expected to include known gamma-ray emitters of Galactic origin such as pulsars and supernova remnants, in addition to an extragalactic population of blazars. However, current data allows the intriguing possibility that some of these objects may represent a new class of yet undiscovered gamma-ray sources. Many theoretically motivated candidate emitters (e.g. clumps of annihilating dark matter particles) have been suggested to account for these detections. We take a new approach to determine to what extent this population is Galactic and to investigate the nature of the possible Galactic component. By assuming that galaxies similar to the Milky Way should host comparable populations of objects, we constrain the allowed Galactic abundance and distribution of various classes of gamma-ray sources using the EGRET data set. We find it is highly improbable that a large number of the unidentified sources are members of a Galactic halo population, but that a distribution of the sources entirely in the disk and bulge is plausible. Finally, we discuss the additional constraints and new insights that GLAST will provide.  相似文献

The origin of cosmic rays is one of the long-standing mysteries in physics and astrophysics. Simple arguments suggest that a scenario of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Milky Way as the dominant sources for the cosmic ray population below the knee could work: a generic calculation indicates that these objects can provide the energy budget necessary to explain the observed flux of cosmic rays. However, this argument is based on the assumption that all sources behave in the same way, i.e. they all have the same energy budget, spectral behavior and maximum energy. In this paper, we investigate if a realistic population of SNRs is capable of producing the cosmic ray flux as it is observed below the knee. We use 21 SNRs that are well-studied from radio wavelengths up to gamma-ray energies and derive cosmic ray spectra under the assumption of hadronic emission. The cosmic ray spectra show a large variety in their energy budget, spectral behavior and maximum energy. These sources are assumed to be representative for the total class of SNRs, where we assume that about 100–200 cosmic ray emitting SNRs should be present today. Finally, we use these source spectra to simulate the cosmic ray transport from individual SNRs in the Galaxy with the GALPROP code for cosmic ray propagation. We find that the cosmic ray budget can be matched well for these sources. We conclude that gamma-ray emitting SNRs can be a representative sample of cosmic ray emitting sources. In the future, experiments like CTA and HAWC will help to distinguish hadronic from leptonic sources and to further constrain the maximum energy of the sources and contribute to producing a fully representative sample in order to further investigate the possibility of SNRs being the dominant sources of cosmic rays up to the knee.  相似文献

Several X-ray binaries(XRBs) have been identified to be associated with supernova remnants(SNRs). Because of the short lifetimes of SNRs, this leaves them to be the youngest known XRBs.This small group of binaries provides valuable information on the formation of compact stars under the framework of massive binary evolution. In this paper we review the observational characteristics of these youngest XRBs and discuss their possible implications on the initial conditions of compact stars and their interaction with the companion stars.  相似文献

In an effort better to calibrate the supernova rate of starburst galaxies as determined from near-infrared [Fe  ii ] features, we report on a [Fe  ii ] λ 1.644 μm line-imaging survey of a sample of 42 optically selected supernova remnants (SNRs) in M33. A wide range of [Fe  ii ] luminosities are observed within our sample (from less than 6 to 695 L). Our data suggest that the bright [Fe  ii ] SNRs are entering the radiative phase and that the density of the local interstellar medium (ISM) largely controls the amount of [Fe  ii ] emission. We derive the following relation between the [Fe  ii ] λ 1.644 μm line luminosity of radiative SNRs and the electronic density of the post-shock gas, n e: L [Fe  ii ]     (cm−3). We also find a correlation in our data between L [Fe  ii ] and the metallicity of the shock-heated gas, but the physical interpretation of this result remains inconclusive, as our data also show a correlation between the metallicity and n e. The dramatically higher level of [Fe  ii ] emission from SNRs in the central regions of starburst galaxies is most likely due to their dense environments, although metallicity effects might also be important. The typical [Fe  ii ]-emitting lifetime of a SNR in the central regions of starburst galaxies is found to be of the order of 104 yr. On the basis of these results, we provide a new empirical relation allowing the determination of the current supernova rate of starburst galaxies from their integrated near-infrared [Fe  ii ] luminosity.  相似文献

A major legacy of the EGRET experiment aboard the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory (CGRO) is the detection of a large number of unidentified Gamma-ray sources. Out of the 271 EGRET sources are 170 not identified yet [Hartman et al. ApJS (123) (1999) 79]. To provide additional information on these unidentified EGRET sources, we derived simultaneous MeV fluxes or flux limits for each source by analyzing the contemporaneous COMPTEL data. Then we compare these MeV fluxes to the extrapolations of the published EGRET spectra. Our results can be grouped into 4 categories [Zhang et al. A&A (421) (2004) 983]: (1) non-constraining upper limits (∼120 sources), (2) hints (> 2 sigma) or detections with consistent MeV fluxes (∼16 sources), (3) enhanced MeV emission (2 sources), and (4) constraining MeV flux limits, requiring a spectral break (∼22 sources). In summary, for about 40 of the unidentified EGRET sources we can provide supplementary spectral information in the neighboring gamma-ray band, which – together with other source parameters – might provide clues to the underlying source nature.  相似文献

This paper reviews observations made over recent years that have led to the identification of many new galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) and have clarified the nature of several objects that had been thought to be SNRs. A revised reference catalogue of 155 galactic SNRs is presented, complete with notes on the newly identified remnants, those objects no longer thought to be SNRs, the questionable objects in the catalogue, and possible candidate SNRs. The selection effects applicable to the identification of galactic SNRs are discussed, with particular reference to the limitations that they impose upon statistical studies.  相似文献

Most of the unidentified gamma ray sources detected near the Galactic plane by EGRET aboard CGRO are expected to be gamma ray pulsars. We present a study about the detectability and identification of some unidentified EGRET sources with the MAGIC telescope. We list some unidentified gamma ray sources from the third EGRET catalogue to be detected with MAGIC taking into account some important conditions such as the variability parameter of the source, spectral index, inclusion in the GeV catalogue (ApJ 488, 1997, p. 872) and possible associations with known X-ray/radio sources located within the error box of the unidentified gamma ray source. We show the required observation time of these gamma ray pulsar candidates to be detected by MAGIC telescope considering reasonable values of cut-off energy. To be more realistic, we have chosen the zenith angle corresponding to the source culmination in the simulation of the effective area A since the observation time is function of the effective area. In addition to this study, it is very important to consider the extrapolated EGRET flux at MAGIC energies above 30 GeV of the gamma ray pulsar candidates taking the MAGIC sensitivity.  相似文献

To investigate the metal enrichment history of the primordial interstellar medium (ISM), we have studied the long-term evolution of supernova remnants (SNRs) and how SNRs distribute the heavy metals into the ISM when they explode. With the assumed IMF for massive stars, we have computed the multiple supernova explosions and evolution in an inhomogeneous ISM. We compare the predicted metallicity distribution of metal deficient halo stars with the observed one. This revised version was published online in September 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The Cygnus region of the Milky Way is prolific in star formation and presents extended diffuse γ-ray emission with a few γ-ray point sources. Among them is 3EG J2020+4017, the brightest of the unidentified EGRET sources, positionally coincident with the supernova remnant G78.2+2.1. Even though the EGRET and multi-wavelength data have not provided a conclusive identification for this γ-ray loud, but otherwise faint object, the evidence favors a pulsar like source. The EGRET photon data lack the signal-to-noise ratio required for a period search, but will serve as a valuable timing baseline extension in the case that GLAST confirms the pulsar nature of the γ-Cygni source. First studies of the X‐ray source population of M 31 were performed with the Einstein Observatory and ROSAT. High resolution Chandra Observatory images not only spatially resolved the center area but also supernova remnants (SNRs) in the galaxy. Source catalogues of restricted areas were presented with high astrometric accuracy. Also luminosity function studies and studies of individual sources based on Chandra and XMM‐Newton observations led to a better knowledge of the X‐ray source population. An XMM‐Newton source catalog based on archival observations revealed more than 850 sources down to a 0.2–4.5 keV luminosity of 1035 erg s–1. EPIC hardness ratios as well as informations from earlier X‐ray, optical, and radio catalogues were used to distinguish between different source classes (SNRs, supersoft sources (SSSs), X‐ray binaries (XRBs), globular cluster sources within M 31, and foreground stars and objects in the background). However, many sources could only be classified as “hard”. These sources may either be XRBs or Crab‐like SNRs in M 31 or background sources. Two of the globular cluster sources could be identified as low mass XRBs with a neutron star as compact object as they showed type I X‐ray bursts. Many of the SSSs were identified as optical novae. Inspired by these results an XMM‐Newton survey of the entire D25 disk of M 31 and a dedicated program to monitor X‐ray counterparts of optical novae in M 31 was started. We discuss implications for further nearby galaxy studies.

Detecting supernova remnant(SNR) candidates in the interstellar medium is a challenging task because SNRs have weak radio signals and irregular shapes. The use of a convolutional neural network is a deep learning method that can help us extract various features from images. To extract SNRs from astronomical images and estimate the positions of SNR candidates, we design the SNR-Net model composed of a training component and a detection component. In addition, transfer learning is used to initialize the network parameters, which improves the speed and accuracy of network training. We apply a T-T plot(of the different brightness temperatures of map pixels at two different frequencies) to calculate the spectral index of SNR candidates. To accelerate the scientific computing process, we take advantage of innovative hardware architecture, such as deep learning optimized graphics processing units, which increases the speed of computation by a factor of 5. A case study suggests that SNR-Net may be applicable to detecting extended sources in the images automatically.  相似文献

Since supernova remnants (SNRs) are believed to be the primary sources of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs), their distribution in galaxies is an important basis for modelling and understanding the distribution of the CRs and their γ-ray spectrum. We analysed the radial surface density of X-ray and radio selected SNRs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and M 33. Both in X-rays and in radio, the surface densities of the SNRs are in excellent agreement in both galaxies, showing an exponential decay in radius. The results were compared to the SNR distribution in the spiral galaxies M 31 and NGC 6946 as well. The radial scale length of the distribution is $\frac{1} {4} $ ? $\frac{1} {3} $ of the radius of the galaxies, fully consistent with values derived for the Milky Way, the LMC, and M 33. Therefore, not only the radio SNRs, but also the X-ray detected SNR sample can be interpreted to be representative for the CR sources within a galaxy.  相似文献

Radio surveys of supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Galaxy have discovered 19 SNRs which are accompanied by the OH maser emission at 1720 MHz. This unusual maser is thought to be produced behind a shock front when a SNR expands into a molecular cloud. An important ingredient of this model is that the X-ray emission from the remnant enhances the production of OH molecules. In this sense, to study the characteristics of the mixed-morphology SNRs accompanied by the OH maser emission at 1720 MHz is important. By studying the X-ray characteristics of the mixed-morphology SNRs accompanied by the 1720 MHz OH maser emission, it is found that the ionization rate of X-ray is not correlated with the physical parameters , D, r, r2 and so on, but is correlated with the X-ray luminosity Lx. Meanwhile, Lx is closely correlated with the beam flux density of the weakest feature of the accompanying 1720 MHz OH maser emission. These mean that the X-ray emission from SNRs is sufficient to dissociate the water molecules behind a shock front and to produce the 1720 MHz OH masers.  相似文献

We have developed a method of searching for the connections between the isolated radio pulsars and supernova remnants, based on the analysis of their kinematic characteristics. We investigate fairly young (τ ch ≲ 106 yr) radio pulsars with known proper motions and estimated distances (dispersion measures), and supernova remnants located no more than 1–2 kpc away from them. Using a standard empirical radial velocity distribution, we have constructed 100–200 thousand trajectories for each of these pulsars, tracing back their possible motion in the Galactic gravitational field on a time-scale of a few million years. The probabilities of their close encounters with the SNRs at epochs consistent with the age of the pulsar are analyzed. When these probabilities exceed considerably their reference values, obtained by assuming a purely random encounter between the objects, we conclude that the pulsars may have originated in the SNRs under consideration. Out of eight preselected pairs of pulsar-SNR association candidates, two pairs, J 1829-1751 / G16.2-2.7 and J 1833-0827 / G24.7-0.6 may have a common origin with a high probability.  相似文献
