FAMOUS basalt 527-1-1 (a high-Mg oceanic pillow basalt) has three generations of spinel which can be distinguished petrographically and chemically. The first generation (Group I) have reaction coronas and are high in Al2O3. The second generation (Group II) have no reaction coronas and are high in Cr2O3 and the third generation (Group III) are small, late-stage spinels with intermediate Al2O3 and Cr2O3. Experimental synthesis of spinels from fused rock powder of this basalt was carried out at temperatures of 1175–1270°C and oxygen fugacities of 10?5.5 to 10?10 atm at 1 atm pressure. Spinel is the liquidus phase at oxygen fugacities of 10?8.5 atm and higher but it does not crystallize at any temperature at oxygen fugacities less than 10?9.5. The composition of our spinels synthesized at 1230–1250°C and 10?9 atmfO2 are most similar to the high-Cr spinels (Group II) found in the rock. Spinels synthesized at 1200°C and 10?8.5 atmO2 are chemically similar to the Group III spinels in 527-1-1. We did not synthesize spinel at any temperature or oxygen fugacity that are similar to the high-Al (Group I) spinel found in 527-1-1. These results indicate that the high-Cr (Group II) spinel is the liquidus phase in 527-1-1 at low pressure and Group III spinel crystallize below the liquidus (~1200°C) after eruption of the basalt on the sea floor. The high-Al spinel (Group I) could have crystallized at high pressure or from a magma enriched in Al and perhaps Mg compared to 527-1-1.  相似文献

The single-crystal elastic moduli of the olivine and spinel phases of Mg2GeO4 have been measured using Brillouin scattering spectra. The moduli for the olivine phase are: C11 = 3.12, C22 = 1.87, C33 = 2.17, C66 = 0.71, C23 = 0.66, C31 = 0.65 and C12 = 0.60. The moduli for the spinel phase are: C11 = 3.00, C44 = 1.26 and C12 = 1.18.These data are analyzed to define the best type of elastic analogue for magnesium orthosilicates. The character of the many-bodied, non-central force associated with the divalent cation is found to significantly influence the relative magnitudes of the elastic moduli. Since the nature of the many-bodied, non-central force is quite different for alkaline earth cations than for transition metal cations, we conclude that materials which contain one of these cation types is not a good analogue for materials with the other type. Magnesium orthogermanate, however, is a good analogue of magnesium orthosilicate. On the other hand, the high elastic anisotropy of the spinel phase of the germanate suggests that the germanium tetrahedron is less rigid under shear than the corresponding silicon tetrahedron. The success of the magnesium orthogermanate to model the magnesium orthosilicate is probably a result of the mechanical isolation of the tetrahedra, thus requiring the conclusions of this study to be further tested before applying them to other silicate systems.  相似文献

Magnesium orthosilicate with spinel structure (γ-Mg2SiO4) was synthesized at about 250 kbar and 1000°C. Unit cell dimension was established to be 8.076 ± 0.001Å. X-ray powder diffraction pattern revealed a significant difference between γ-Mg2SiO4 and other γ-M2SiO4 spinels (M = Fe, Co, and Ni) in the intensities of (111) and (331) reflections, both of which are virtually absent in the Mg2SiO4 spinel. This feature could be thoroughly understood by the calculation of the intensities for several silicate spinels.  相似文献

Many isolated grains of a reddish pleonaste-type spinel occur in fines and metabreccia samples, particularly 14 319. Electron microprobe analyses (104) of spinels and their associated phases include 58 of pleonaste which show Mg/(Mg + Fe) 0.44–0.62 and Cr/(Cr + Al) 0.017–0.134 (atomic), plus minor amounts of other ions, and differ greatly from almost all previously recorded lunar spinels; almost no spinels of intermediate composition were found. Two types of compositional zoning exist: a diffuse primary one with cores lower in Ti, and a narrow secondary one from reaction with matrix yielding rims higher in Cr, Ti, and Mn. At contacts with breccia matrix there is a narrow corona of almost pure plagioclase (An80-An94), free of opaque minerals and pyroxene. Two types of solid inclusions found in the pleonaste are calcic plagioclase, and tiny spherical masses of nickel-rich sulfide.  相似文献

High-pressure and high temperature experiments at 20 GPa on (Mg,Fe)SiO3 have revealed stability fields of two types of aluminium-free ferromagnesian garnets; non-cubic garnet and cubic garnet (majorite). Majorite garnet is stable only within a limited compositional variation, 0.2 < Fe/(Mg + Fe)< 0.4, and in the narrow temperature interval of 200°C around 2000°C, while the stability of non-cubic garnet with more iron-deficient compositions persists up to higher temperatures. These two garnets show fractional melting into iron-deficient garnet and iron-rich liquid, and the crystallization field of cubic garnet extends over Fe/(Mg + Fe)= 0.5. The assemblage silicate spinel and stishovite is a low-temperature phase, which also occurs in the iron-rich portion of the MgSiO3—FeSiO3 system. The sequence as given by the Fe/(Mg + Fe) value for the coexisting phases with the two garnets at 2000°C and 20 GPa is: silicate modified spinel aluminium-free garnets silicate spinel.Natural majorite in shock-metamorphosed chondrites is clarified to be produced at pressures above 20 GPa and temperatures around 2000°C. Similar shock events may cause the occurrence of non-cubic garnet in iron-deficient meteorites. Non-cubic garnet could be a stable phase in the Earth's mantle if a sufficiently low concentration of aluminium is present in the layer corresponding to the stable pressure range of non-cubic garnet. The chemical differentiation by melting in the deep mantle is also discussed on the basis of the present experimental results and the observed coexistence of majorite garnet with magnesiowüstite in chondrites.  相似文献

In the 1960s, E. Schreiber and his colleagues pioneered the use of hot-pressed polycrystalline aggregates for studies of the pressure and temperature dependence of the elastic wave velocities in minerals. We have extended this work to the high-pressure polymorphs of mantle minerals by developing techniques to fabricate large polycrystalline specimens in a 2000-ton uniaxial split-sphere apparatus. A new cell assembly has been developed to extend this capability to pressures of 20 GPa and temperatures of 1700°C. Key elements in the new experimental design include: a telescopic LaCrO3 forT>1200°C; Toshiba Tungaloy grade F tungsten carbide anvils; and the use of homogeneous glasses or seeded powder mixtures as starting material to enhance reactivity and maximize densities. Cell temperatures are linearly related to electrical power to 1700°C and uniform throughout the 3 mm specimens. Pressure calibrations at 25°C and 1700°C are identical to 15 GPa. Cylindrical specimens of the beta and spinel phases of Mg2SiO4, stishovite (SiO2-rutile), and majorite-pyrope garnets have been synthesized within their stability fields in runs of 1–4 hr duration and recovered at ambient conditions by simultaneously decompressing and cooling along a computer-controlledP-T path designed to preserve the high-pressure phase and to relax intergranualar stress in the polycrystalline aggregate. These specimens are single-phased, fine-grained (<5 micron), free of microcracks and preferred orientation, and have bulk densities greater than 99% of X-ray density. The successful fabrication of these high-quality polycrystalline specimens has made possible experiments to determine the pressure dependence of acoustic velocities in the ultrasonics laboratory of S. M. Rigden and I. Jackson at the Australian National University.CHiPR: NSF Science and Technology Center for High Pressure Research.  相似文献

Theoretical calculations indicate that elastic stresses induced by surface topography may be large enough in some landscapes to fracture rocks, which in turn could influence slope stability, erosion rates, and bedrock hydrologic properties. These calculations typically have involved idealized topographic profiles, with few direct comparisons of predicted topographic stresses and observed fractures at specific field sites. We use a numerical model to calculate the stresses induced by measured topographic profiles and compare the calculated stress field with fractures observed in shallow boreholes. The model uses a boundary element method to calculate the stress distribution beneath an arbitrary topographic profile in the presence of ambient tectonic stress. When applied to a topographic profile across the Susquehanna Shale Hills Critical Zone Observatory in central Pennsylvania, the model predicts where shear fractures would occur based on a Mohr–Coulomb criterion, with considerable differences in profiles of stresses with depth beneath ridgetops and valley floors. We calculate the minimum cohesion required to prevent shear failure, Cmin, as a proxy for the potential for fracturing or reactivation of existing fractures. We compare depth profiles of Cmin with structural analyses of image logs from four boreholes located on the valley floor, and find that fracture abundance declines sharply with depth in the uppermost 15 m of the bedrock, consistent with the modeled profile of Cmin. In contrast, Cmin increases with depth at comparable depths below ridgetops, suggesting that ridgetop fracture abundance patterns may differ if topographic stresses are indeed important. Thus, the present results are consistent with the hypothesis that topography can influence subsurface rock fracture patterns and provide a basis for further observational tests. The single-crystal elastic moduli of the ilmenite phase of MgSiO3 have been determined from Brillouin spectroscopy. They are: C11 = 472, C12 = 168, C33 = 382, C13 = 70, C44 = 106, C14 = ?27, C66 = 152 and C25 = ?24 in GPa. These elastic properties are consistent with a structural mechanical model where the silicon octahedra are very stiff under compression and shear. This latter property yields an unexpectedly high shear modulus for the magnesium silicate ilmenite as compared with analogue compounds. The further transformation to perovskite will probably be associated with a significant increase in elastic properties since the strong silicon polyhedra form a structural network in this phase. The transformation of spinel and stishovite to ilmenite is associated with a slight density increase and a slight decrease in acoustic velocities. This transformation will probably not produce a seismic discontinuity even if it does occur in the Earth's mantle.  相似文献

The Sindong Group was deposited in the north–south trending half‐graben Nakdong Trough, southern Korean peninsula. The occurrence of detrital chromian spinels from the Jinju Formation of the Sindong Group in the Gyeongsang Basin means that the mafic to ultramafic rocks were exposed in its provenance. The chromian spinels from the Jinju Formation are characterized by extremely low TiO2 and Fe3+. Moreover, their range of Cr# is from 0.45 to 0.80 and makes a single trend with Mg#. The chemistry of chromian spinels implies that the source rocks for chromian spinels were peridotites or serpentinites, which originated in the mantle wedge. To more narrowly constrain their source rocks, the Ulsan and Andong serpentinites exposed in the Gyeongsang Basin were examined petrographically. Chromian spinels in the Andong serpentinite differ from those of the Jinju Formation and those in the Ulsan serpentinite partly resemble them. Furthermore, the Jinju chromian spinel suite is similar to the detrital chromian spinels from the Mesozoic sediments in the Circum‐Hida Tectonic zone, which includes the Nagato Tectonic zone in Southwest Japan and the Joetsu Belt in Northeast Japan. This suggests that the basement rocks, which were located along the main fault bounding the eastern edge of the Nakdong Trough, had exposures of peridotite or serpentinite. It is possible that the Nakdong Trough was directly adjacent to the Circum‐Hida Tectonic zone before the opening of the Sea of Japan (East Sea).  相似文献

This study discusses the photosynthetic pathway types involved in canopy temperature measurements on a mixed grassland consisting of C3 and C4 plants (dominant species in biomass were Solidago altissima (C3), Miscanthus sinensis (C4), and Imperata cylindrica (C4)). In the wet conditions immediately after the rainy season, the mean canopy temperature for S. altissima was the lowest among the dominant species, mainly due to its leaf conductance being twice as large as the other two species. Despite using the same C4 photosynthetic pathway, M. sinensis had a lower apparent canopy temperature than I. cylindrica due to a smaller proportion of sunlit elements in the field of view. In the dry conditions during late July, the mean canopy temperatures of the three dominant species were within 0·3 °C of one another. These results can be explained by poor water conditions for C3 species (S. altissima). The simultaneous survey of vegetation and thermal imaging can help clarify characteristics of C3 and C4 canopy temperature over complicated grassland. Experimental study of the phase boundary for the disproportionation of the inverse spinel Mg2SnO4 into its isochemical mixed oxides indicates a slope dP/dT = 40 ± 10bars/°K. This positive slope is consistent with the large entropies of inverse (relative to normal) spinels predicted from high-temperature entropy-molar volume systematics. Thermodynamic data do not support the existence of a distinctly negative slope for the proposed disproportionation of Mg2SiO4 normal spinel. Evidence from X-ray and phase equilibria studies suggests the possibility that Si4+, Mg2+, and Fe2+ share the octahedral sites in silicate spinels under mantle conditions. The consequences of this partial inverse character are a positive slope for the postulated spinel-mixed oxide phase boundary near 650 km depth, removal of a widely accepted constraint on mantle-wide convection, and anomalous elasticity-density behaviour within the transition zone.  相似文献

Natural gases discovered up to now in Lishui Sag, the East China Sea Basin, differ greatly in gaseous compositions, of which hydrocarbon gases amount to 2%–94% while non-hydrocarbon gases are dominated by CO2. Their hydrocarbon gases, without exception, contain less than 90% of methane and over 10% of C2 + heavier hydrocarbons, indicating a wet gas. Carbon isotopic analyses on these hydrocarbon gases showed that δ 13C1, δ 13C2 and δ 13C3 are basically lighter than −44‰, −29‰ and −26‰, respectively. The difference in carbon isotopic values between methane and ethane is great, suggesting a biogenic oil-type gas produced by the mixed organic matter at peak generation. δ 13 \( C_{CO_2 } \) values of nonhydrocarbon gases are all heavier than −10‰, indicating a typical abiogenic gas. The simulation experiment on hydrocarbon generation of organic matter in a closed gold-tube system showed that the proportion of methane in natural gases produced by terrigenous organic matter in the Lingfeng Formation marine deposit is obviously higher than that in natural gases derived from the aquatic and terrigenous mixed organic matter in the Yueguifeng Formation lacustrine deposit, consequently the proportion of heavier hydrocarbons of the former is remarkably lower than that of the latter. Moreover, δ 13C1 values of natural gases produced by terrigenous organic matter in the Lingfeng Formation marine deposit are about 5‰ heavier than those of natural gases derived from the aquatic and terrigenous mixed organic matter in the Yueguifeng Formation lacustrine deposit while δ 13C2 and δ 13C3 values of the former are over 9‰ heavier than those of the latter. Currently the LS36-1 oil-gas pool is the only commercial oil-gas reservoir in Lishui Sag, where carbon isotopic compositions of various hydrocarbon components differ greatly from those of natural gases produced by the Lingfeng Formation organic matter but are very similar to those of natural gases derived from the Yueguifeng Formation organic matter, therefore, natural gases in the LS36-1 oil-gas pool are mainly derived from the Yueguifeng Formation lacustrine source rock rather than the Lingfeng Formation marine or Mingyuefeng Formation coal-measures source rocks.

The Raman spectra of carbonaceous material (CM) from 19 metasediment samples collected from six widely separated areas of Southwest Japan and metamorphosed at temperatures from 165 to 655°C show systematic changes with metamorphic temperature that can be classified into four types: low‐grade CM (c. 150–280°C), medium‐grade CM (c. 280–400°C), high‐grade CM (c. 400–650°C), and well‐crystallized graphite (> c. 650°C). The Raman spectra of low‐grade CM exhibit features typical of amorphous carbon, in which several disordered bands (D‐band) appear in the first‐order region. In the Raman spectra of medium‐grade CM, the graphite band (G‐band) can be recognized and several abrupt changes occur in the trends for several band parameters. The observed changes indicate that CM starts to transform from amorphous carbon to crystallized graphite at around 280°C, and this transformation continues until 400°C. The G‐band becomes the most prominent peak at high‐grade CM suggesting that the CM structure is close to that of well‐crystallized graphite. In the highest temperature sample of 655°C, the Raman spectra of CM show a strong G‐band with almost no recognizable D‐band, implying the CM grain is well‐crystallized graphite. In the Raman spectra of low‐ to medium‐grade CM, comparisons of several band parameters with the known metamorphic temperature show inverse correlations between metamorphic temperature and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the D1‐ and D2‐bands. These correlations are calibrated as new Raman CM geothermometers, applicable in the range of c. 150–400°C. Details of the methodology for peak decomposition of Raman spectra from the low to medium temperature range are also discussed with the aim of establishing a robust and user‐friendly geothermometer.  相似文献

The enthalpies of formation from the oxides of Mg2SnO4 and Co2SnO4 were found by oxide melt solution calorimetry to be +1.13 ± 0.48 kcal/mol and ?2.31 ± 0.28 kcal/mol, respectively. Using these data, the slopes, ?P/?T, for disproportionation of these spinels to the component oxides at high pressure were calculated to be +30.4 ± 4.2 bar/K for Mg2SnO4 and ?10.3 ± 2.4 bar/K for Co2SnO4, in general agreement with the data of Jackson et al. (1974a,b). Using thermochemical data for the formation of olivines, for olivine-spinel transitions and for the transformation of quartz to stishovite, we calculate pressures for the disproportionation of silicate spinels to be in the range 150–200 kbar. Calculated slopes ?P/?T for the disproportionation reactions are ?10.7, ?24.9, ?11.2, and +7.6 bar/K for Mg2SiO4, Fe2SiO4, Co2SiO4, and Ni2SiO4. The large negative slope calculated for Fe2SiO4 results from a surprisingly large positive slope reported for the olivine-spinel transition in that compound (Akimoto et al., 1969). Further consideration of the systematic trends in the thermodynamics of spinel formation from the oxides suggests that the silicate spinels should have entropies of formation close to zero, resulting in values of ?P/?T which are zero or at most only slightly negative. This confirms the conclusion of Jackson, Liebermann, and Ringwood that values of ?P/?T for spinel disproportionation are unlikely to be more negative than ?10 bar/K and may well be slightly positive. Reaction of spinels to form other post-spinel phases, particularly ilmenite and perovskite, are discussed in terms of available thermochemical data.  相似文献

New ultrasonic data on some crystal structures important in mantle mineralogy are presented for compounds of Mg2GeO4, Fe2GeO4 and Fe2SiO4, both in olivine and spinel structures, and of GeO2, SnO2 and SiO2 in the rutile structure, as their elastic parameters were determined by a powder—matrix method. With these new elasticity data, a power law for the velocity-density relationship arising from lattice dynamics is examined. Specific conclusions made are: (1) ultrasonic measurements on germanate compounds become very useful for estimating the elastic parameters of their silicate analogs: (2) the power law describes the velocity-density relationship for high-pressure polymorphs better than Birch's linear law: and (3) the power law is useful in our study of the elasticity and constitution of the elasticity and constitution of the deep interiors of the earth and other planets.  相似文献

An extensive study of a big number of gneiss specimens with various shock features from the suevite allowed unravelling of the shock behavior of almandite garnets.Almandites in shocked metamorphic rocks show with increasing dynamic pressures strong irregular fracturing. differently oriented sets of planar fractures or elements, brown turbidity and nucleation of minute crystals of an unknown phase in solid garnets. At higher peak pressures garnet was found to break down to (1) orthopyroxene + spinel + glass, and to (2) spinel + glass due to fast shock-melting.Extensive quantitative electron microprobe studies of almandite garnets and their breakdown products were carried out. The breakdown products within the original grain boundaries of the garnets consist of an alumina-rich orthopyroxene (with up to 10 wt. % Al2O3), hercynite to pleonaste spinels and a silica and calcium-rich glass matrix. The chemical zonation of magnesium and manganese of the former garnets is inherited in the composition of the newly formed orthopyroxenes.Petrographic evidence and chemical composition suggest a fast breakdown of the almandite garnets after passing of shock waves at rapidly falling pressures and very high post-shock temperatures within the ejected gneissic rock material.  相似文献

Abundant natural gas inclusions were found in calcite veins filled in fractures of Central Fault Belt across the centre of Ordos Basin. Time of the calcite veins and characteristics of natural gas fluid inclusion were investigated by means of dating of thermolum luminescence (TL) and analyzing stable isotope of fluid inclusion. Results show that natural gas inclusion formed at 130–140°C with salinity of 5.5 wt%–6.0 wt% NaCl. It indicates that natural gas inclusion is a kind of thermal hydrocarbon fluid formed within the basin. Method of opening inclusion by heating was used to analyze composition of fluid inclusion online, of which the maximal hydrocarbon gas content of fluid inclusion contained in veins is 2.4219 m3/t rock and the maximal C1/ΣC i ratio is 91%. Laser Raman spectroscopy (LRS) was used to analyze chemistry of individual fluid inclusion in which the maximal hydrocarbon gas content is 91.6% compared with little inorganic composition. Isotope analysis results of calcite veins show that they were deposited in fresh water, in which the δ 13CPDB of calcite veins is from −5.75‰ to 15.23‰ and δ 18OSMOW of calcite veins is from 21.33‰ to 21.67‰. Isotope results show that δ 13C1 PDB of natural gas fluid inclusion is from −21.36‰ to −29.06‰ and δDSMOW of that is from −70.89‰ to −111.03‰. It indicates that the gas of fluid inclusion formed from coal source rocks and it is the same as that of natural gas of Mizhi gas reservoir. Results of TL dating show that time of calcite vein is (32.4±3.42)×104 a, which is thought to be formation time of gas inclusion. It indicated that natural gas inclusion contained in calcite veins recorded natural gas leakage from Mizhi gas reservoir through the Central Fault Belt due to Himalayan tectonic movement.

The β-phase, spinelloid polymorph of (Mg, Fe)2SiO4 makes up a major part of the transition of the Earth's mantle. Naturally occurring β-(Mg, Fe)2SiO4 wadsleyite, from the Peace River meteorite was found to carry a variety of stacking faults, the nature of which have been studied using high resolution transmission electron microscopy. The faults lie on (010) and are generally of a complex nature, best described in terms of various stacking sequences of the component spinelloid units. The stacking faults locally transform the cation distribution, so that in the plane of the fault the structure is that of spinel. The development of such stacking faults is consequently a significant feature of the martensitic transformation of spinel to β-phase. The possible occurrence of transformation enhanced plasticity associated with this inversion is discussed, and the probable deformation mechanisms of β-(Mg, Fe)2SiO4 are outlined.  相似文献

Single-crystal elasticity of stishovite was examined using a new experimental technique and an empirical macroscopic model. Employing high-frequency resonant ultrasound spectroscopy, single-crystal elastic constants of stishovite were determined: C11 = 443(3), C33 = 781(4), C12 = 193(2), C23 = 199(2), C44 = 256(2), and C33 = 316(2) GPa. The frequency range of the resonant ultrasound spectroscopy techniques was 6–20 MHz, which is much lower than the ~10 GHz range of the Brillouin scattering technique. Of the elastic constants, the shear elastic constants C44 and C66 are consistent with the average value of the previously mentioned Brillouin scattering. Conversely, the four elastic constants, C11, C33, C12, and C23, slightly deviate outside the range of previous Brillouin scattering results. The present results, except those for C12, are consistent with recent lattice dynamic analysis of inelastic X-ray scattering data. The adiabatic bulk modulus was calculated as 298 GPa, which is smaller and more consistent with the result of compression experiments than any other Brillouin scattering results (301–312 GPa). The present result shows greater P-wave velocity anisotropy (24.7%) than any preceding work. To understand the unique elastic properties of stishovite, the Gingham check model was proposed and examined. The result shows that the octahedron of 6-coordinated Si in stishovite crystal has stiffness comparable to that of diamond.  相似文献

The elastic moduli of single-crystal LiF and NaF have been determined by the ultrasonic pulse superposition technique as a function of temperature from T = 298–650° K. These new data are consistent with low-temperature (T < 298° K) data obtained by other ultrasonic pulse techniques and are superior to previous high-temperature data from resonance experiments. The elastic moduli (c) are represented by quadratic functions in T over the experimental temperature range although the curvature is not in the same sense for all modes. For LiF, NaF, MgO and CaO, evaluation of the temperature derivatives of the elastic moduli at constant volume (V) indicates that the elastic moduli are only weakly dependent on T at constant volume. The fluoride—oxide analogue pair LiFMgO both exhibit high-temperature elastic behaviour at approximately the same absolute temperature. Mitskevich's theory and observed KS-V systematics imply that (?c/?T)P should be a function of the nearest neighbour distance for rocksalt fluorides and oxides; this result lends further support to a fluorideoxide modelling scheme based on similar ionic radii.  相似文献
