An angular correlation of low significance (2 σ ) is observed between 0.3< z <0.5 QSOs and V 23 galaxies. Overall, the cross-correlation function between 82 intermediate-redshift (0.3< z <0.7) X-ray selected QSOs and V ≲24 galaxies is investigated, but no signal is detected for the z >0.5 QSOs. After converting to an excess of galaxies physically associated with the QSO, this lack of strong correlation is shown to be consistent with the clustering of normal galaxies at the same moderate redshifts. Combined with previous observations, these results imply that the environments of radio-quiet QSOs do not undergo significant evolution with respect to the galaxy population over a wide range of redshifts (0< z <1.5). This is in marked contrast to the rapid increase in the richness of the environments associated with radio-loud QSOs over the same redshift range.  相似文献

The disciplines of asteroseismology and extrasolar planet science overlap methodically in the branch of high‐precision photometric time series observations. Light curves are, amongst others, useful to measure intrinsic stellar variability due to oscillations, as well as to discover and characterize those extrasolar planets that transit in front of their host stars, periodically causing shallow dips in the observed brightness. Both fields ultimately derive fundamental parameters of stellar and planetary objects, allowing to study for example the physics of various classes of pulsating stars, or the variety of planetary systems, in the overall context of stellar and planetary system formation and evolution. Both methods typically also require extensive spectroscopic follow‐up to fully explore the dynamic characteristics of the processes under investigation. In particularly interesting cases, a combination of observed pulsations and signatures of a planet allows to characterize a system's components to a very high degree of completeness by combining complementary information. The planning of the relevant space missions has consequently converged with respect to science cases, where at the outset there was primarily a coincidence in instrumentation and techniques. Whether space‐ or ground‐based, a specific type of stellar pulsations can themselves be used in an innovative way to search for extrasolar planets. Results from this additional method at the interface of stellar pulsation studies and exoplanet hunts in a beyond‐mainstream area are presented (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Long-term monitoring of the recently discovered X-ray transient, IGR J17098−3628, by the All-Sky Monitor on-board the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer , has shown that it displays a long-term (≈163 d) quasi-periodic modulation in the data spanning its 'active' state (i.e. approximately MJD 53450–54200). Furthermore, this light curve is not typical of 'classical' soft X-ray transients, in that J17098−3628 has remained active since its initial discovery, and may be more akin to the pseudo-transient EXO 0748−676, which is now classified as a persistent low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB). However, EXO 0748−676 recently entered a more active phase (since approximately MJD 53050), and since then we find that it too displays a quasi-periodic modulation (≈181 d) in its light curve. This must be a 'superorbital' modulation, as the orbital period of EXO 0748−676 is well established (3.8 h), and hence we interpret both objects' long periods as representing some intrinsic properties of the accretion disc (such as coupled precessional and warping effects). By analogy, we therefore suggest that IGR J17098−3628 is another member of this class of pseudo-transient LMXBs and is likely to have a <1 d orbital period.  相似文献

We present data probing the spatial and kinematical distribution of both the atomic (H  i ) and molecular (CO) gas in NGC 5218, the late-type barred spiral galaxy in the spiral–elliptical interacting pair, Arp 104. We consider these data in conjunction with far-infrared and radio-continuum data, and N -body simulations, to study the galaxies interactions, and the star formation properties of NGC 5218. We use these data to assess the importance of the bar and tidal interaction on the evolution of NGC 5218, and the extent to which the tidal interaction may have been important in triggering the bar. The molecular gas distribution of NGC 5218 appears to have been strongly affected by the bar; the distribution is centrally condensed with a very large surface density in the central region. The N -body simulations indicate a time-scale since perigalacticon of  ∼3 × 108 yr  , which is consistent with the interaction having triggered or enhanced the bar potential in NGC 5218, leading to inflow and the large central molecular gas density observed. Whilst NGC 5218 appears to be undergoing active star formation, its star formation efficiency is comparable to a 'normal' SBb galaxy. We propose that this system may be on the brink of a more active phase of star formation.  相似文献

In a search for new Galactic planetary nebulae from our systematic scans of the Anglo-Australian Observatory/United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (AAO/UKST) Hα Survey of the Southern Galactic Plane, we have identified a Population I Wolf–Rayet star of type WN7h associated with an unusual ring nebula that has a fractured rim. We present imagery in Hα, the 843-MHz continuum from the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST), the mid-infrared from the Midcourse Space Experiment ( MSX ), and confirmatory optical spectroscopy of the character of the nebula and of its central star. The inner edge of the Hα shell shows gravitational instabilities with a well-defined wavelength around its complete circumference.  相似文献

We have produced brightness and magnetic field maps of the surfaces of CV Cha and CR Cha: two actively accreting G- and K-type T Tauri stars in the Chamaeleon I star-forming cloud with ages of 3–5 Myr. Our magnetic field maps show evidence for strong, complex multipolar fields similar to those obtained for young rapidly rotating main-sequence stars. Brightness maps indicate the presence of dark polar caps and low-latitude spots – these brightness maps are very similar to those obtained for other pre-main-sequence and rapidly rotating main-sequence stars.
Only two other classical T Tauri stars have been studied using similar techniques so far: V2129 Oph and BP Tau. CV Cha and CR Cha show magnetic field patterns that are significantly more complex than those recovered for BP Tau, a fully convective T Tauri star.
We discuss possible reasons for this difference and suggest that the complexity of the stellar magnetic field is related to the convection zone; with more complex fields being found in T Tauri stars with radiative cores (V2129 Oph, CV Cha and CR Cha). However, it is clearly necessary to conduct magnetic field studies of T Tauri star systems, exploring a wide range of stellar parameters in order to establish how they affect magnetic field generation, and thus how these magnetic fields are likely to affect the evolution of T Tauri star systems as they approach the main sequence.  相似文献

Several measurements of quasi-stellar object (QSO)–galaxy correlations have reported signals much larger than predictions of magnification by large-scale structure. We find that the expected signal depends strongly on the properties of the foreground galaxy population. On arcmin scales, it can be either larger or smaller by a factor of 2 for different galaxy types in comparison with a linearly biased version of the mass distribution. Thus the resolution of some of the excess measurements may lie in examining the halo occupation properties of the galaxy population sampled by a given survey; this is also the primary information such measurements will provide.
We use the halo model of clustering and simulations to predict the magnification-induced cross-correlations and errors for forthcoming surveys. With the full Sloan Digital Sky Survey, the statistical errors will be below 1 per cent for the galaxy–galaxy correlations and significantly larger for QSO–galaxy correlations. Thus accurate constraints on parameters of the galaxy halo occupation distribution can be obtained from small-scale measurements and on the bias parameter from large scales. Since the lensing-induced cross-correlation measures the first moment of the halo occupation number of galaxies, these measurements can provide the basis for interpreting galaxy clustering measurements that measure the second- and higher-order moments.  相似文献

XMM‐Newton and Chandra have boosted our knowledge about the X‐ray emission of early‐type stars (spectral types OB and Wolf‐Rayet). However, there are still a number of open questions that need to be addressed in order to fully understand the X‐ray spectra of these objects. Many of these issues require high‐resolution spectroscopy or monitoring of a sample of massive stars. Given the moderate X‐ray brightness of these targets, rather long exposure times are needed to achieve these goals. In this contribution, we review our current knowledge in this field and present some hot topics that could ideally be addressed with XMM‐Newton over the next decade. We present UBVIC photometry of starlike objects in the central region of NGC 3077. The colour‐colour and colour‐magnitude diagrams of the objects are discussed. Many of the objects under consideration, starlike from the ground, are probably dense young star clusters (super star clusters, SSC). Ages spreading over ∼4 to ∼150 Myr are estimated for most of these objects. Sakai and Madore (2001) found enhanced star formation ∼30–125 Myr ago also in the halo of this galaxy; thus, high star forming activity has occurred within the entire galaxy (centre and halo) since ∼130…150 Myr. Having ended in the outer regions about 30 Myr ago, it is going on near the centre with full vigour. (© 2004 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

It has been claimed by Taylor et al. that the low-redshift end of the K – z relation for radio galaxies is too bright by about half a magnitude owing to contributions from the obscured quasar nuclei. Such a result has major implications for the use of the K -band Hubble diagram in understanding the cosmological evolution of radio galaxies. In this paper we present 1–5-μm imaging data of a nearly complete sample of low-redshift radio galaxies; this approach allows us to determine accurately the strengths of any unresolved nuclear components in the galaxies. We detect nuclear sources in five targets, whose broad-band colours are consistent with reddened quasar spectra. In all the five cases the ratio of the inferred intrinsic near-infrared luminosity to the narrow-line luminosity is typical of quasars. We find a correlation between the inferred nuclear extinction and core-to-lobe ratio, which places constraints on the geometry of the torus. We find evidence for a shift of the K – z relation to fainter magnitudes, but by a much smaller amount (∼0.1 mag) than determined by Taylor et al. Under the assumption that the nuclear sources in radio galaxies have the same intrinsic near-infrared spectra as quasars, our multiwavelength images allow us to limit any possible shift to less than 0.3 mag.  相似文献

We have earlier investigated the surface structures of a late‐type, single, giant FK Com for the years 1994–1998 using Doppler imaging. These surface temperature maps revealed long‐lived active regions at high latitudes. Long‐term photometric observations also show that these active regions tend to occur at two permanent active longitudes which are 180 degrees apart from each other, and that the activity switches the longitude with an average period of about 3 years (the “flip‐flop” phenomenon). In this work we present new Doppler maps of FK Com obtained 1998‐2003 and light‐curve maps obtained 2002–2003. These new maps are investigated together with the earlier temperature maps and light‐curve maps, with an aim of further studying the active longitudes, “flip‐flop” phenomenon and surface differential rotation on FK Com. We present preliminary results of our X‐shooter survey in star forming regions. In this contribution we focus on subsamples of young stellar and sub‐stellar objects (YSOs) in the Lupus star forming region and in the TW Hya association. We show that the X‐shooter spectra are suitable for conducting several parallel studies such as YSO + disk fundamental parameters, accretion and outflow activity in the very low‐mass (VLM) and sub‐stellar regimes, as well as magnetic activity in young VLM YSOs, and Li abundance determinations. The capabilities of X‐shooter in terms of wide spectral coverage, resolution and limiting magnitudes, allow us to assess simultaneously the accretion/outflow, magnetic activity, and disk diagnostics, from the UV and optical to the near‐IR, avoiding ambiguities due to possible YSO variability (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Abstract— Understanding the fundamental crystal chemical controls on visible and near‐infrared reflectance spectra of pyroxenes is critical to quantitatively assessing the mineral chemistry of pyroxenes viewed by remote sensing. This study focuses on the analysis of spectroscopic measurements of a comprehensive set of synthetic Mg‐Fe pyroxenes from the visible through the near‐infrared (0.3–2.6 μm) to address the constraints of crystal structure and Fe2+ content on spin‐forbidden and spin‐allowed crystal field absorptions in Ca‐free orthopyroxenes. The chemistry and oxidation state of the synthetic pyroxenes are characterized. Coordinated Mössbauer spectroscopy is used to determine site occupancy of Fe2+ in the M1 and M2 crystallographic sites. Properties of visible and near‐infrared absorption bands of the synthetic pyroxenes are quantified using the modified Gaussian model. The 1 and 2 μm spin‐allowed crystal field absorption bands move regularly with increasing iron content, defining a much tighter trend than observed previously. A spin‐allowed crystal field absorption band at 1.2 μm is explicitly verified, even at low total iron contents, indicating that some portion of Fe2+ resides in the M1 site. The 1.2 μm band intensifies and shifts to longer wavelengths with increasing iron content. At visible wavelengths, spin‐forbidden crystal field absorptions are observed in all iron‐bearing samples. The most prominent absorption near 506 nm, attributed to iron in the M2 site, shifts to slightly longer wavelengths with iron content. The purity and extent of this pyroxene series allows visible wavelength absorption bands to be directly assigned to specific transitions of Fe2+ in the M1 and M2 sites.  相似文献

The most recent fission-barrier calculations based on improved mass formulas indicate that the adopted values are underestimated. We analyze the dependence of the fission rates on the fission barrier and show that an increase in the fission barriers leads not so much to a decrease in the importance of fission as to the possible synthesis of heavier elements in the r-process. The rates of induced fission of most isotopes with Z>80 at astrophysical energies have been calculated for the first time for fission barriers obtained from different theoretical models.  相似文献
