H observations of solar large-scale fields were used to reconstruct the heliosphere structure for the time interval of 1915–1996. A special method of polar correction was developed. The expansion coefficients in Legendre polynomials were calculated. An atlas of the heliosphere structure was compiled. Inferred strength of the polar and equatorial field in 1915–1996 years was calculated. Cyclic variations of the polar field and the number of polar plages were compared to show a satisfactory agreement. The q parameter, characterizing the divergence of the polar plumes in the epochs of the solar minimum, was calculated and its quasi-periodic behaviour with a period of the order of 70 years was revealed. Our calculations were tentatively compared with the interplanetary magnetic field structure.  相似文献

Auto-correlation analysis was performed using digitized synoptic charts of photospheric magnetic fields for the past three solar activity cycles (1965–1994). The obtained correlograms were used to study the rotation and the zonal-sector structure of large-scale solar magnetic fields all over the observable region of heliolatitudes in various phases of solar activity. It is shown that the large-scale system of solar magnetic fields is rather complex and comprises at least three different systems. One is a global rigidly rotating system. It determines the cyclic variation of magnetic fields and is probably responsible for the behavior of magnetic fields in the polar zones. Another is a rigidly rotating 4-sector structure in the central (equatorial and mid-latitude) zone. The third is a differentially rotating system that determines the behavior of the LSSMF structure elements with a size of 30–60° and less. This one is the most noticeable in the central zone and absent in the polar zones. Various cyclic and rotation parameters of the three field structures are discussed.  相似文献

A study of the background corona near solar minimum   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The white light coronagraph data from Skylab is used to investigate the equatorial and polarK andF coronal components during the declining phase of the solar cycle near solar minimum. Measurements of coronal brightness and polarization brightness product between 2.5 and 5.5R during the period of observation (May 1973 to February 1974) lead to the conclusions that: (1) the equatorial corona is dominated by either streamers or coronal holes seen in projections on the limb approximately 50% and 30% of the time, respectively; (2) despite the domination by streamers and holes, two periods of time were found which were free from the influences of streamers or holes (neither streamers nor holes were within 30° in longitude of the limb); (3) the derived equatorial background density model is less than 15% below the minimum equatorial models of Newkirk (1967) and Saito (1970); (4) a spherically symmetric density model for equatorial coronal holes yields densities one half those of the background density model; and (5) the inferred brightness of theF-corona is constant to within ±10% and ±5% for the equatorial and polar values, respectively, over the observation period. While theF-corona is symmetric at 2R it begins to show increasing asymmetry beyond this radius such that at 5R the equatorialF-coronal brightness is 25% greater than the polar brightness. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

The sidereal rotation rate of the high-latitude solar regions is examined using long-lived photospheric polar faculae. The observations were carried out with the photoheliograph of Kislovodsk Mountain Station of the Pulkovo Observatory from 1982 to 1986. The following facts have been established: (a) There is a differential rotation of the polar faculae close to the maximum of solar activity, while the amount of latitude gradient of solar rotation decreases towards the sunspot minimum; (b) small differences of rotation in the northern and southern hemispheres of the Sun are observed; (c) some deviations of differential rotation curves constructed for each Carrington rotation from the mean curve of differential rotation are revealed. The total amplitude of the maximum positive and negative excesses is about 40–50 m s–1. The positive surplus velocities of solar rotation (the amplitude of which is about 20–25 m s–1) move in the form of a wave from heliographic latitudes 40° with a velocity of 1.6 m s–1. The latitude width of this flow is B 15°. This wave of abnormally high velocity starts in the year of minimum solar activity and reaches the pole 11 years later. The picture is symmetrical relative to the equator.  相似文献

The area density distribution of bright photospheric points on the quiet solar surface is not uniform. The distributions show some considerable pecularities. This article is a study of their characteristics during the four last solar activity minima in Bartels longitudes. The bright-photospheric-point distributions on the equatorial and polar solar surface exhibit a type of sectoral-hemispherical asymmetry. The density distributions vary a lot, but have the tendency to alternate with a period of 22 years. The phase origin of density concentrations is the first structural pecularity of the photospheric point distributions. The simultaneous appearance of bright regions on the equatorial and polar solar surface in spatial antiphase lock and, at the same time, the half-phase shift (11 years) between polar and equatorial cycles suggests a synchronous distribution process. This time synchronization is the second important pecularity of density concentrations. Therefore, the solar activity organization in minima occurs according to strict synchronization, like being under the control of a very precise clock.  相似文献

Daily observations of Doppler line shifts made with very low spatial resolution (3) with the Stanford magnetograph have been used to study the equatorial rotation rate, limb effect on the disk, and the mean meridonial circulation. The equatorial rotation rate was found to be approximately constant over the interval May 1976–January 1977 and to have the value 2.82 rad s–1 (1.96 km s–1). This average compares favorably with the results of Howard (1977) of 2.83 rad s–1 for the same time period. The RMS deviation of the daily measurements about the mean value was 1% of the rate (20 m s–1), much smaller than the fluctuations reported by Howard and Harvey (1970) of several per cent. These 1% fluctuations are uncorrelated from day-to-day and may be due to instrumental problems. The limb effect on the disk was studied in equatorial scans (after suppressing solar rotation). A redshift at the center of the disk relative to a position 0.60R from the center of 30 m s–1 was found for the line Fe i 5250 Å. Central meridian scans were used (after correcting for the limb effect defined in the equatorial scans) to search for the component of mean meridonial circulation symmetric across the equator. A signal is found consistent with a polewards flow of 20 m s–1 approximately constant over the latitude range 10–50°. Models of the solar differential rotation driven by an axisymmetric meridonial circulation and an anisotropic eddy viscosity (Kippenhahn, 1963; Cocke, 1967; Köhler, 1970) predict an equatorwards flow at the surface. However, giant cell convection models (Gilman, 1972, 1976, 1977) predict a mean polewards flow (at the surface). The poleward-directed meridonial flow is created as a by-product of the giant cell convection and tends to limit the differential rotation. The observation of a poleward-directed meridonial circulation lends strong support to the giant cell models over the anisotropic eddy viscosity models. Now at Kitt Peak National Observatory, Tucson, Ariz., U.S.A.  相似文献

Images of comet Hyakutake (C/1996 B2) are analyzed in conjunction with solar wind data from spacecraft to determine the relationship between solar wind conditions and plasma tail morphology. The disconnection event (DE) on March 25, 1996 is analyzed with the aid of data from the IMP-8 and WIND Earth-orbiting spacecraft and the DE is found to be correlated with a crossing of the heliospheric current sheet. The comet was within of Earth at the time of the DE and data from IMP-8 and WIND show no high-speed streams, significant density enhancements or shocks. The latitudinal variation in the appearance and orientation of the plasma tail are interpreted based on results from the Ulysses spacecraft. In the polar solar wind region, the comet has a relatively undisturbed appearance, no DEs were observed, and the orientation of the plasma tail was consistent with a higher solar wind speed. In the equatorial solar wind region, the comet's plasma tail had a disturbed appearance, a major DE was observed, and the orientation of the plasma tail was consistent with a lower solar wind speed. The boundary between the equatorial and polar regions crossed by comet Hyakutake in April 1996 was near 30°N (ecliptic) or 24°N (solar) latitude.  相似文献

The sunspot position published in the data bases of the Greenwich Photoheliographic Results (GPR), the US Air Force Solar Optical Observing Network and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (USAF/NOAA), and of the Debrecen Photoheliographic Data (DPD) in the period 1874 to 2016 were used to calculate yearly values of the solar differential-rotation parameters \(A\) and \(B\). These differential-rotation parameters were compared with the solar-activity level. We found that the Sun rotates more differentially at the minimum than at the maximum of activity during the epoch 1977?–?2016. An inverse correlation between equatorial rotation and solar activity was found using the recently revised sunspot number. The secular decrease of the equatorial rotation rate that accompanies the increase in activity stopped in the last part of the twentieth century. It was noted that when a significant peak in equatorial rotation velocity is observed during activity minimum, the next maximum is weaker than the previous one.  相似文献

A correlative study is made between inferred solar sources of high-speed solar wind streams and extended white-light coronal features. The solar wind data used in the study consists of 110 co-rotating high-speed plasma streams observed from spacecraft at 1 AU in the period February 1971-December 1974; the coronal data consists of 144 equatorward extensions of polar coronal holes and 15 equatorial coronal holes, derived fromK-coronometer maps of the white-light corona during the same period. Of 110 observed solar wind streams 88 could directly be associated with an equatorward extension of a polar-cap coronal hole and 14 could be associated with a low-latitude equatorial coronal hole. In 8 cases no visible coronal feature was identified. Of 144 identified polar-cap extensions 102 were associated with a high-speed stream observed at 1 AU; 19 coronal features were related in time to data gaps in the solar wind measurements, while 38 features did not give rise to solar wind streams observed at Earth orbit. The probability of an association depended on the heliographic co-latitude of a polar hole extension, being 50% for a polar lobe extending down to 45° co-latitude and 100% for a polar coronal hole extending to 80° co-latitude or more.Paper presented at the 11th European Regional Astronomical Meeting of the IAU on New Windows to the Univese, held 3–8 July, 1989, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain.  相似文献

The virial theorem in tensor form for subsystems is used to determine equilibrium configurations of two-component, concentric and copolar, homogeneous spheroids, one completely lying within the other. Then the related total energy and angular momenta are expressed explicitly as functions of the mass ratio,m, the equatorial axis ratio,y, the polar to equatorial axis ratios, U , the rotation parameters, rotU , and the anisotropy parameters, pecU . With assigned masses, angular momenta, total energy, rotation parameters, and anisotropy parameters, there remain three independent equations and four unknowns, i.e. equatorial semiaxes and (polar to equatorial) axis ratios. To get a unique solution, and then describe the quasi-static collapse (via energy dissipation) of the inner subsystem within the halo, a number of alternative additional conditions are taken into consideration. It is also argued that the true situation, involving neither homogeneous nor spheroidal halos, lies between two extreme cases, namely: (i) the two subsystems collapse together with coinciding boundaries, and (ii) halos depart only faintly, or not at all, from the related initial configurations. Starting from systems with coinciding boundaries and specific angular momenta, the related evolutionary sequences are derived by substantial improvement of previous attempts. Some limiting situations are also considered, where the mass of one subsystem tends to zero and/or the mass of the other one tends to infinite. An application of the theory to systems of galactic mass and plausible other parameters shows that (i) initial configurations depend on the total mass and final (with a flat inner component) configurations depend on the mass of the collapsing visible body; (ii) quasi-static collapse depends mainly on the mass ratio,m, for given total masses and angular momenta, while the action of different additional conditions is negligible; (iii) halos as massive as about ten visible bodies depart from the initial configuration by no more than a few percents, using different additional conditions, and yield (for fiduciary values related to the Galaxy, i.e. total mass 1012 M , total angular momentum 1075 g cm2 s–1) final configurations related to flat visible bodies with equatorial semiaxes of about 15 kpc, close to observations.  相似文献

The rotational properties of sunspots during the time interval 1977–1986 (solar cycle 21) are studied; only sunspot groups older than 4 days have been the object of this research. We have looked systematically for any kind of anomaly or fine structure in the differential rotation latitudinal profile and any significant change occurring during the course of the solar cycle. Some latitudinal bands are found where the angular rotation rate, rather than decreases according to its overall tendency, increases or is constant with the latitude. The differential rotation profile is, therefore, finely structured. The whole fine-structure pattern is affected by a slow equatorward shift. It is suggested that these fine structure features are due to the Coriolis forces acting on the meridional motions associated with giant toroidal convective cells. Some of the properties of such cells are inferred. Moreover, while the spot zone shifts equatorward, it is found to expand poleward; this expansion occurs by the addition of new belts of activity on the poleward side of the pre-existing active zone. The active zone is therefore found to consist, at the maximum activity epoch, of three different belts of spot production, each of them being centered around a local maximum-activity latitude; each of these centroids of activity is hypothesized to lie where a couple of meridional streams - associated with giant cells - converge. The activity belts are independent of each other as far as their activation, maximum, and end time, as well as their lifetime and level of activity are concerned. The angular rotation rate is correlated, in each belt, with the local level of activity.  相似文献

According to A.A. Khentov Venus' rotation is in the quasi-stationary state as a result of the balance interaction of the solar tidal torque with the aerodynamical torque of the rotating Venus' atmosphere. In case of the nonconservative forces are negligible and the solar attraction is the stabilizing factor, the rotation of the rigid Venus may be assumed as the first approximation. The theory of the rotation of the rigid Venus in the coordinates,, had been constructed. It have been found that Venus rotates almost uniformly and the libration harmonics are negligible.  相似文献

The properties of the differential rotation of the Sun are investigated by using H filaments as tracers. Annual average angular velocities of 716 quiescent filaments are determined from H photoheliograms of the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory film collection for the years 1957–1993. The existence of north-south (N–S) asymmetry in H filaments rotation is confirmed statistically. The connection of asymmetry with the solar activity cycles is established. It is found that the northern hemisphere rotates faster during the even cycles (20 and 22) while the rotation of southern hemisphere dominates in odd ones (cycles 19 and 21). The mechanism of the solar activity should be responsible for the N–S asymmetry of the solar differential rotation. A theoretical explanation for the N–S asymmetry in the Suns rotation is offered. It is suggested that the asymmetry in the rotation of the two hemispheres of the Sun is balanced by the dynamo mechanism, which acts in parallel to the mechanism offered here. It is concluded that the N–S asymmetry of the solar rotation should cause a difference in activity level between the northern and southern hemispheres.  相似文献

A good knowledge of coronal hole (CH) evolution in time is relevant for the understanding of the decay and/or the stability of large-scale magnetic fields in the different heliographic latitudinal belts. Using a CH catalogue, mainly compiled from the Hei line (10830 Å) measurements (Sanchez-Ibarra and Barraza-Paredes, 1992, and updated from the NOAA/Boulder Web pages), some characteristics of the CH behaviour in the solar activity cycles 21 and 22 are identified and described. We found: (i) the total number distributions for the isolated and polar coronal holes are similar, (ii) there is a north/south asymmetry, with a northern dominance in the number distribution of the polar coronal holes, (iii) a hint of a 22-year periodicity in the CH behaviour. In addition, two pairs of two isolated CHs with opposite polarity, maximum ages of more than 14 Carrington rotations, separated by about two years, are found during the early decreasing activity phase of each cycle.  相似文献

An analysis of the rotation of coronal holes (CHs) spanning 18 years was done based on data from theCatalogue of Coronal Holes (Sanchez-Ibarra and Barraza-Paredes, 1992). A differential rotation of CHs is confirmed for the totality of CHs, but a different behavior was found when those were separated as equatorial or isolated, and polar hole extensions, such as in theCatalogue. Isolated CHs show a typical differential rotation, but polar hole extensions display two different types of behavior: a rotation rate below 40° ± 5° of heliographic latitude, increasing to the equator, and a rotation rate above the same heliographic latitude but increasing to the poles. Also discussed here is how this last result agrees with other studies that indicate the mostly rigid rotation of the corona at higher latitudes.  相似文献

Satellite observations of solar proton events with a halo structure or an energetic storm proton event and an SSC are studied. It is pointed out that some SSC events are associated with a decrease in the few MeV cosmic ray fluxes while most are associated with a flux increase. The properties of halo protons and energetic storm protons are compared. It is hypothesized that the two events are similar in origin. The propagation mode of storm particles is discussed. Evidence is presented for a solar, rather than interplanetary origin of storm protons.  相似文献

Extreme ultraviolet observations of coronal holes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Extreme-ultraviolet Skylab and ground-based solar magnetic field data have been combined to study the origin and evolution of coronal holes. It is shown that holes exist only within the large-scale unipolar magnetic cells into which the solar surface is divided at any given time. A well-defined boundary zone usually exists between the edge of a hole and the neutral line which marks the edge of its magnetic cell. This boundary zone is the region across which a cell is connected by magnetic arcades with adjacent cells of opposite polarity. Three pieces of observational evidence are offered to support the hypothesis that the magnetic lines of force from a hole are open. Kitt Peak magnetograms are used to show that, at least on a relative scale, the average field strengths within holes are quite variable, but indistinguishable from the field strengths in other quiet parts of the Sun's surface. Finally it is shown that the large, equatorial holes characteristic of the declining phase of the last solar cycle during Skylab (1973–74) were all formed as a result of the mergence of bipolar magnetic regions (BMR's), confirming an earlier hypothesis by Timothy et al. (1975). Systematic application of this model to the different aspects of the solar cycle correctly predicts the occurrence of both large, equatorial coronal holes (the M-regions which cause recurrent geomagnetic storms) and the polar cap holes.  相似文献

Three-dimensional numerical simulations show that large-scale latent heating resulting from condensation of water vapor can produce multiple zonal jets similar to those on the gas giants (Jupiter and Saturn) and ice giants (Uranus and Neptune). For plausible water abundances (3-5 times solar on Jupiter/Saturn and 30 times solar on Uranus/Neptune), our simulations produce ∼20 zonal jets for Jupiter and Saturn and 3 zonal jets on Uranus and Neptune, similar to the number of jets observed on these planets. Moreover, these Jupiter/Saturn cases produce equatorial superrotation whereas the Uranus/Neptune cases produce equatorial subrotation, consistent with the observed equatorial-jet direction on these planets. Sensitivity tests show that water abundance, planetary rotation rate, and planetary radius are all controlling factors, with water playing the most important role; modest water abundances, large planetary radii, and fast rotation rates favor equatorial superrotation, whereas large water abundances favor equatorial subrotation regardless of the planetary radius and rotation rate. Given the larger radii, faster rotation rates, and probable lower water abundances of Jupiter and Saturn relative to Uranus and Neptune, our simulations therefore provide a possible mechanism for the existence of equatorial superrotation on Jupiter and Saturn and the lack of superrotation on Uranus and Neptune. Nevertheless, Saturn poses a possible difficulty, as our simulations were unable to explain the unusually high speed (∼) of that planet’s superrotating jet. The zonal jets in our simulations exhibit modest violations of the barotropic and Charney-Stern stability criteria. Overall, our simulations, while idealized, support the idea that latent heating plays an important role in generating the jets on the giant planets.  相似文献

Properties of a latitude zonal component of the large-scale solar magnetic field are analyzed on the basis of H charts for 1905–1982. Poleward migration of prominences is used to determine the time of reversal of the polar magnetic field for 1870–1905. It is shown that in each hemisphere the polar, middle latitude and equatorial zones of the predominant polarity of large-scale magnetic field can be detected by calculating the average latitude of prominence samples referred to one boundary of the large-scale magnetic field. The cases of a single and three-fold polar magnetic field reversal are investigated. It is shown that prominence samples referred to one boundary of the large-scale magnetic field do not have any regular equatorward drift. They manifest a poleward migration with a variable velocity up to 30 m s-1 depending on the phase of the cycle. The direction of migration is the same for both low-latitude and high-latitude zones. Two different time intervals of poleward migration are found. One lasts from the beginning of the cycle to the time of polar magnetic field reversal and the other lasts from the time of reversal to the time of minimum activity. The velocity of poleward migration of prominences during the first period is from 5 m s-1 to 30 m s-1 and the second period is devoid of regular latitude drift.  相似文献

Characteristics of enhanced and low-amplitude cosmic-ray diurnal variation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The occurrence of a large number of high- and low-amplitude cosmic-ray diurnal wave trains during the two solar cycles (20 and 21) over the years 1965–1990 has been examined as a function of solar activity. The high-amplitude days with the time of maximum in the 18:00 hr corotation direction do not indicate any significant correlation with solar activity. But, the low-amplitude days are inversely correlated with solar activity and the time of maximum shifts to earlier hours ( 15:00 hr direction). The slope of the power-specrum density roughly characterized by power spectral index n in the high-frequency range 3.5 x 10–5 Hz to 8.3 x 10–4 Hz (time scales of 20 min to 8 hr) is different for the two classes of events. A suggestion is made that the enhanced and low-amplitude cosmic-ray diurnal variations are produced by different types of interplanetary magnetic field distributions.  相似文献
