The diurnal periodicity of seismic events of different energy from the Greece earthquake catalog was studied. Earthquake samplings of different energy with a known level of magnitude of completeness were compiled. Parameters of the diurnal periodicity of earthquakes in different time and magnitude intervals were analyzed. Significant diurnal periodicity of earthquakes with M ≤ 4.1 was revealed. The most important result of the paper is the discovery of the diurnal periodicity of the representative earthquakes with M = 3.2–4.1. The diurnal periodicity of representative earthquakes cannot be explained at the base of the prevailing hypothesis considering the diurnal periodicity of earthquakes as an apparent phenomenon resulting from diurnal changes in the real sensitivity of the seismic network due to diurnal variations of seismic noise.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study focuses on the variability of lake evaporation and also the periodic relationships among hydro-meteorological variables. The monthly hydro-meteorological data of Lake Keban were investigated by wavelet transforms. The results show that the main periodicity is on an annual scale. This periodicity is weaker for precipitation and wind speed but higher for evaporation, temperature, runoff and relative humidity. In addition to this, the continuous wavelet figures show some weak periodicities on the almost 10-year scale level but they are not continuous over time. Also, strong events on a short-term monthly scale are seen for evaporation, precipitation and runoff in 1988. This event in 1988 may be explained by the 1988 La Niña event, which was one of the strongest on record. Also, the periodicities on the 2–8-month scales in the precipitation data can be interpreted as being connected with the strong El Niño events of 1982 and 1992.

Abstract

The steady nonlinear regime of Bénard convection in a uniformly rotating fluid is treated using a two-dimensional primitive-equation numerical model with rigid boundaries. Quantitative comparisons with laboratory heat transport data for water are made in the parameter ranges for which the experimental flows are approximately two-dimensional and steady. When an experimentally realistic spatial periodicity is imposed upon the numerical solution, the model simulates the experimental determinations of Nusselt number fairly accurately. In particular, it predicts the observed non-monotonic dependence on Taylor number. When spatial periodicities corresponding to those of the linear stability problem are specified, however, the accuracy of the simulation is less and the Taylor number dependence is monotonic.  相似文献

The dynamics of wave disturbances in the ionospheric E region in the band of periods of thermal tidal waves and waves of planetary scales (T = 48, 72, and 192 h) has been studied based on the variations in the horizontal component of the geomagnetic field, observed at Paratunka and Barrow observatories in September–October 1999. It has been found that, at midlatitudes during high geomagnetic activity, the intensity of oscillations in the power spectra with T = 24 and 12 h varies with a periodicity of 16 days different from the periodicity of changes in the ΣKp index. The maximal deviations of these periods from the values under quiet conditions coincide with the maximal changes in the ΣKp index. The variations in the 48–192 h band of periods (especially with T ~192 h) intensify simultaneously with increasing geomagnetic activity. The intensity of this harmonic is several times as high as that of the harmonic with T ~ 24 h. The periodicity of changes in the harmonics intensity within the 48–192 h band coincides with the periodicity of changes in the ΣKp index. In the polar ionosphere, the effect of high geomagnetic activity is observed as an increase in the variations with a quasi-period of T ~ 24 h and as an appearance of variations in the 48–192 h band with the periodicity coinciding with the maximums in the ΣKp index variations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study assesses the performance of Fourier series in representing seasonal variations of the tropical rainfall process in Malaysia. Fourier series are incorporated into a spatial-temporal stochastic model in an attempt to make the model parsimonious and, at the same time, capture the annual variation of rainfall distribution. In view of Malaysia’s main rainfall regime, the model is individually fitted for two regions with distinctive rainfall profiles: one being an urban area receiving rainfall from convective activities whilst the other receives rainfall from monsoonal activities. Since both regions are susceptible to floods, the study focuses on the rainfall process at fine resolution. Fourier series equations are developed to represent the model’s parameters to describe their annual periodicity. The number of significant harmonics for each parameter is determined by inspecting the cumulative fraction of total variance explained by the significant harmonics. Results reveal that the number of significant harmonics assigned for the parameters is slightly higher in the region with monsoonal rains. The overall simulation results show that the proposed model is capable of generating tropical rainfall series from convective and monsoonal activities.

Comprehensively assessing the hydrological alteration of river flows is a prerequisite for the scientific management, protection, and restoration of rivers. The range of variability approach (RVA), which is based on indicators of hydrological alteration (IHAs), is a widely used method to evaluate hydrological alteration. However, the RVA only considers the frequency of each IHA, neglecting the equally important temporal order of these IHAs. The order of IHA event can be reflected by its periodicity. On the basis of the RVA, in this study, we propose a revised RVA that considers both the frequency and periodicity of IHAs. In the revised RVA, first, the periodic time of each IHA is identified; next, the periodicity alteration (P) of river flow is calculated by comparing the periodic times of the pre‐impact‐period and post‐impact‐period IHAs; finally, P and the frequency alteration(D) in traditional RVA are incorporated into a single index (H) to reflect the overall hydrological alteration. A case study of the Xi Dayang (XDY) Reservoir and rearranged flow suggests that the traditional RVA underestimates hydrological alterations because it neglects the alteration of periodicity. Compared with the traditional RVA and its alternatives, the revised RVA could give a more comprehensive representation of hydrological alteration caused by human and nature impacts. ABSTRACT

The occurrence of cyclic fluctuations and trends in water levels has been tested by examining a long-term series of mean annual water levels in 11 outflow lakes, mostly groove lakes, located in Northern Poland between 14° E and 23° E and situated at different altitudes up to 120 m above sea level.

Analysis of the occurrence of cyclic fluctuations of water levels has been carried out by means of mass curves. The regression method together with the moving average method applied to 10-year values of mean annual water levels were used to establish the trend in water levels.

On the basis of the research completed, it has been stated that long-term fluctuations of mean annual water levels of the lakes under investigation, in spite of the absence of a distinct periodicity, are characterized by a cycle with a 23-year period. The studies of the trends of mean annual water levels revealed a negative tendency ranging from—0·059 to—0·402 cm per annum.  相似文献

The spectral-profile and wavelet analyses are applied for estimating the periodicity in the depth variations of the elastic wave velocities in the detailed seismoacoustic model of the Kola Superdeep Borehole. The geological confinement of the revealed multiscale periodicity and its relationship with the geodynamical processes in the Earth??s crust are considered. The hierarchical sequence of the sizes of the blocks identified in the section is determined; this hierarchy is consistent with the geophysical structure of the medium.  相似文献

Abstract

Rainfall is the main source of irrigation water in the northeastern part of Thailand where the inhabitants derive their income primarily from farming. In order to improve their economic conditions, the efficient use of available water is essential and this requires a sound understanding of the distribution of rainfall in space and in time. The present study aims at providing basic information on rainfall sequences in the region, such as their amount and their distribution in space and time. Several other statistical properties such as the persistence, the periodicity and the degree of irregularity of rainfall and the transition probabilities between rainy and non-rainy days are presented. An assessment of the availability of water for irrigation is also made.  相似文献

Abstract

The trends of annual, seasonal and monthly precipitation in southern China (Guangdong Province) for the period 1956–2000 are investigated, based on the data from 186 high-quality gauging stations. Statistical tests, including Mann-Kendall rank test and wavelet analysis, are employed to determine whether the precipitation series exhibit any regular trend and periodicity. The results indicate that the annual precipitation has a slightly decreasing trend in central Guangdong and slight increasing trends in the eastern and western areas of the province. However, all the annual trends are not statistically significant at the 95% confidence level. The average precipitation increases in the dry season in central Guangdong, but decreases in the wet season, meaning that the precipitation becomes more evenly distributed within the year. Furthermore, the analysis of monthly precipitation suggests that the distribution of intra-annual precipitation changes over time. The results of wavelet analysis show prominent precipitation with periods ranging from 10 to 12 years in every sub-region in Guangdong Province. Comparing with the sunspot cycle (11-year), the annual precipitation in every sub-region in Guangdong province correlates with Sunspot Number with a 3-year lag. The findings in this paper will be useful for water resources management.

Dependence of the diurnal periodicity phase diagrams for Southern California earthquakes on their magnitude is studied with the Rayleigh-Schuster method. The highest statistical significance of diurnal periodicity is characteristic for the weakest non-representative earthquakes occurring in the night rather than in the daytime. The statistical significance of the earthquake diurnal periodicity decreases as the earthquake magnitude increases. Diurnal periodicity disappears in the neighborhood of the catalog magnitude of completeness. It appears again with a reasonably high level of statistical significance in the magnitude range exceeding the magnitude of completeness. However, its phase becomes opposite: strong earthquakes are more frequent in the daytime. Phase diagrams of different spatial earthquake sample groups are compared, and the night and daytime earthquake recurrence graphs are studied.  相似文献

The diurnial periodicity of Garm Polygon earthquakes of various energy classes K [(magnitudes M): weak, K < 6.0 (M < 1.1); moderate, 6.0 < K < 8.0 (1.1 < M < 2.2); strong, K > 8.0 (M > 2.2)] has been studied. The time series of weak earthquakes is characterized by maximum activity at night and a clear diurnal periodicity that practically disappears for moderate earthquakes. Such periodicity can be traced again in the time series of the strong earthquakes practically antiphased to weak earthquakes; i.e., the maximum strong earthquakes occurred during the day time.  相似文献

Abstract

A theoretical analysis of pseudo two-dimensional, finite-amplitude, thermal convection is made for an infinite Prandtl number fluid which is subjected to a constant heat flux out of the top boundary and insulated at the bottom. For large Rayleigh numbers the convective flow becomes intermittent and the system is characterized by the following cyclic process: the formation of a thermal boundary layer by diffusion, the instability of this layer when it becomes sufficiently thick, the destruction of the layer by the convective flow, the dying down of the convection, and the reforming of the thermal boundary layer by diffusion. The periodicity and the horizontal wave number of the intermittent convective flow are found to be independent of the depth of the fluid layer but depend on the rate of cooling and the properties of the fluid.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Climate change projections of precipitation and temperature suggest that Serbia could be one of the most affected regions in southeastern Europe. To prepare adaptation measures, the impact of climate changes on water resources needs to be assessed. Pilot research is carried out for the Lim River basin, in southeastern Europe, to predict monthly flows under different climate scenarios. For estimation of future water availability, an alternative approach of developing a deterministic-stochastic time series model is chosen. The proposed two-stage time series model consists of several components: trend, long-term periodicity, seasonality and the stochastic component. The latter is based on a transfer function model with two input variables, precipitation and temperature, as climatic drivers. The Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency for the observed period 1950–2012 is 0.829. The model is applied for the long-term hydrological prediction under the representative concentration pathway (RCP) emissions scenarios for the future time frame 2013–2070.  相似文献

Abstract

The effects induced on the climate by human activity have become a major issue for the new millennium. In order to arrive at sustainable conclusions it is necessary, first of all, to assess and quantify natural climatic changes. In general this is done by analysing available time series. In the case of historical hydrometeorological data sets, a comparative analysis with solar cycles is not usually conducted. This work, however, demonstrates that the effect of solar cycles observed at the Equator is also visible at middle and high latitudes with multiple periodicity of the basic solar frequency (roughly 11 years). This could well be due to the interaction between solar forcing and circulation mechanisms within the atmosphere, i.e. water-air-soil interactions coupled with anthropogenic forcing. This theory has been tested by comparing different types of historical data series with the River Po discharges and cyclic appearance of slime bloom in the Adriatic Sea.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Groundwater is an important resource in semi-arid Chile to meet local social, economic and environmental water demands. Historical ground water level (GWL) data (1986–2014) in the Coquimbo Region were analysed to characterize short and long-term alluvial aquifer dynamics. Long-term trends were assessed using a seasonal Mann-Kendall trend test, which indicated that more than 80% of the time series exhibit a negative trend. Short-term analysis using cross-correlation provided information on recharge origin and its spatial pattern. Runoff and GWL are highly correlated depending on elevation, signifying that stream to aquifer flow is an important recharge process at higher altitudes. Long-term recharge behaviour was characterized using time-frequency wavelet power spectra. The results show significant amplitude of the 5-year recharge period for GWL, which is driven by a 5-year El Niño index periodicity. Such results provide key information of the spatiotemporal functioning of aquifers.  相似文献

The East River in the Pearl River basin, China, plays a vital role in the water supply for mega‐cities within and in the vicinity of the Pearl River Delta. Knowledge of statistical variability of streamflow is therefore important for water resources management in the basin. This study analyzed streamflow from four hydrological stations on the East River for a period of 1951–2009, using ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), continuous wavelet transform (CWT) technique, scanning t and F tests. Results indicated increasing/decreasing streamflow in the East River basin before/after the 1980s. After the early 1970s, the high/low flow components were decreasing/increasing. CWT‐based analysis demonstrates a significant impact of water reservoirs on the periodicity of streamflow. Scanning t and F test indicates that significantly abrupt changes in streamflow are largely influenced by both water reservoirs construction and precipitation changes. Thus, changes of streamflow, which are reflected by variations of trend, periodicity and abrupt change, are due to both water reservoir construction and precipitation changes. Summary Various formulations of the mass-transport problem are compared for progressive waves in deep water. In order to calculate the mass-transport velocity as a function of depth in the main body of the fluid, it is necessary to include the effect of viscous wave attenuation. It is shown that the usual assumptions of periodicity in distance and attenuation with time or periodicity in time and attenuation with distance, are both physically unsatisfactory. The first does not specify a unique solution, and the second is incompatible with the assumption of zero surface stress. A certain critical constant tangential wind stress will maintain strictly time-periodic deep water waves. The corresponding attenuation with distance is then calculated to order 3. A constant tangential stress greater or less than the critical causes waves, necessarily decaying with distance, to grow or decay with time.  相似文献

The periodicity of orogeny is discussed in terms of sea floor spreading, plate tectonics and recent orogenic theory. The confusion in discussions of periodicity is due to the lumping of three distinct features together; continental edge orogenies, continental collision orogenies and features due to mid-oceanic rises. Orogenic periodicity is only well developed for continental edge orogenies. This is related to periodicity in mid-oceanic rise activity over the world. If this is shown to be untrue, there is no periodicity to orogeny over the world; and periodicity is only developed on continental edges controlled by one mid-oceanic rise.  相似文献

The aim of this paper is to report some periodicities observed in the ionospheric parameter foF2 measured at Tucuman (26.9°S; 65.4°W), station placed near the southern crest of the equatorial anomaly. For that, monthly medians of foF2 at several hours of LT for the period 1958–1987 are used. The data are run with Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Data gaps (4–5 months) are filled by means of linear interpolation. Several periodicities are present. Besides the solar cycle dominant dependence (11 years), semi-annual, annual, five years and quasi-biennial periodicities are also observed. A marked quasi-biennial periodicity is observed at daytime and nighttime hours being their greater amplitude at local noon and midnight. Different mechanisms or combined effects possibly cause them. It is suggested that the solar activity by means of extreme ultraviolet radiation (EUV), which present a quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) and it is responsible for the ionization, could be the dominant mechanism for the diurnal quasi-biennial periodicity of foF2. At night, since the photoionization by extreme ultraviolet radiation is not significant and the F2 layer is lower than during daytime (100 km) other mechanism may be operative for the quasi-biennial periodicity observed. Possibly the stratospheric QBO contributes to the modulation of the observed behaviour in foF2 at night. This result is preliminary because it needs to be extended to other stations so as to extract definite conclusions. Moreover, we cannot dismiss the possibility of a combined effect of both these mechanisms mainly at daytime and/or QBO influence of geomagnetic parameters.  相似文献
