Data on a statistic derived from the angular covariance function show that (contrary to the claim of Peebles that galaxies are distributed continuously with no distinct scales), superclusters and the maximum size of clusters are probably defined at scales of 15 and 2.0h –1 Mpc. This suggests some stepped-density profile like the idealized models of de Vaucouleurs and Wertz: consideration is therefore given to a semi-continuous hierarchy in which there are galaxies outside clusters, clusters outside superclusters etc. Theories of the origin of clustering by gravitational clumping and the escape of galaxies from clusters suggests the hypothesis that the average mass (m g) of galaxies outside clusters is smaller than that of those inside (=fractionf of the total), a hypothesis supported by results on the continuity of the angular and spatial covariance functions. In a semi-continuous hierarchy, the overall packing fractionf e and the fraction (1-f) of galaxies outside clusters both appear to increase as the distancer from a local origin increases, because a line-of-sight to greater depths intersects systems of the hierarchy of continually greater size (R i). If the hypothesis is valid thatm g inside clusters is slightly larger thanm g outside, the apparent effect is to makem g systematically distance-dependent from a local origin with and 10.3. No direct data on galaxy masses exist to refute such a small trend, but since the absolute magnitudes of galaxies are known to be correlated (very weakly) with their masses, a semi-continuous hierarchy has a location-dependent luminosity function, (M). Within uncertainties as to the steepness of (M) at the bright end, the model is consistent with optical number counts to a limiting photographic magnitudem pg (isotropic slope,q=0.6; semicontinuous modelq=0.64; observation,q=0.67±0.03, standard error.) this removes the discrepancy between the determinations by de Vaucouleurs and Sandageet al. of the thinning factor (1.7). Predictions of the semi-continuous model are made which are at present observationally feasible to carry out. In particular, it is predicted thatq(20<|M|<22)/q(14<|M|<19)2(±0.2).  相似文献

Surface photometry of the UV continuum galaxy NGC 838 has been carried out in theB, V system using photographic plates obtained with the 74 Kottamia telescope, Egypt. Isophotes, luminosity profiles, integrated photographic magnitudes, effective diameters and other photometric parameters are derived.The photoelectrically calibrated total apparent magnitudes areB T =13.57 with maximum diameters 1.57×1.34 (at threshold m =27.7 mag.//) andV T =12.91 with maximum diameters 1.54×1.32 (at threshold m =27.7 mag./). The integrated colour index(B–V) T =0.66 and the effective surface brightness e (B=19.0 mag./) and e (V=19.7 mag./. The major axis is at position angle =85°±1°.The nucleus of NGC 838 is quite blue (integrated colour(B–V)=0.41 forr *<0.1) compared to normal galaxies while the colour becomes redder from the nucleus outwards. The UV excess, H emission and radio continuum emission previously observed from this galaxy by other investigators may be attributed to a recent burst of star formation in the nucleus of the galaxy of duration slightly greater than 2×107 yr.  相似文献

A sample of 41 radio-galaxies with 13.0m corr15.5 has been analyzed to test the angular redshift anisotropy discovered on Sc I galaxies by Rubin, Rubin and Ford. The sample does not present their anisotropy but contains an even more curious distribution of radial velocities which suggests that the Rubin-Ford effect results from an anomalous redshift of light when it travels through clusters of galaxies.  相似文献

On November 27, 1974, a map of the Moon was obtained at 6 cm wavelength with the 100-m-telescope in Effelsberg. The high angular and favourable temperature resolution allowed an interpretation of the observed brightness distribution. The dominant feature of the brightness distribution is the centre-to-limb variation, particularly noticeable in the direction of the poles. The exponent of the commonly adopted cos ()-law, describing the temperature variation across the lunar disk, is determined as 0.4. The North-South variation of the lunar surface temperature is estimated to be 30%; the depth of penetration (L e) of electromagnetic waves of 6 cm wavelength is found to beL e 17 m.  相似文献

The present attempt aims to predict the dependence of the spin parameter, , the angular momentum,J, and the typical radius,a vir, on the mass,M, which have been found inN-body simulations of expanding density perturbations in hierarchical clustering, when virialization is attained. We show that M 0 for systems with same adimensional density distribution and velocity distribution, and in particular for scale-free density perturbations in hierarchical clustering. In the special case of ellipsoidal perturbations, it is also found:J M 7/4,a vir M 1/2. All these results turn out to be in close agreement withN-body simulations, despite the simple model adopted. Expanding and virialized perturbations are modelled, respectively, by homogeneous and heterogeneous, similar ellipsoids which allow flat rotation curves far from the centre. Both energy and angular momentum maintain from a given time on, lying between the beginning of strong decoupling from the Hubble flow and the occurrence of maximum volume. Then the whole set of virialized ellipsoidal configurations with same energy and angular momentum are derived, and the dependence of the spin parameter on the anisotropy parameter, pec is investigated. Turning our attention to the formation of galaxies, we derive the total mass as a function of the collapse factor, using the empirical anticorrelation between dark to visible mass ratio within the optical radius of disk galaxies and their luminous masses. Observational data related to a sample of elliptical galaxies provide evidence that the contraction in these bodies occurred in proportion to the square root of the ratio of total to luminous mass. On the contrary, it is deduced that dissipation of angular momentum in elliptical galaxies occurred more or less at the same rate. If both shape and anisotropy parameter are preserved during the collapse, typical axis rations 21 = 0.98, 31 = 0.69, are found to correspond to a moderate anisotropy, pec 0.27, with a small dependence on the spin parameter in the range allowed.  相似文献

Certain characteristics of quasars observed in the regions of three rich clusters of galaxies are investigated. It is shown that the luminosity functions constructed for samples of quasars from the regions of the Virgo and Fornax clusters are similar to each other and show a very sharp maximum at a stellar magnitude of 18m.0-18m.3. The maximum of the luminosity function for quasars from the region of the Coma cluster (A 1656) is shifted toward fainter magnitudes and lies at 21m. This effect is explained by the affiliation of the majority of the quasars to the respective clusters. It is shown that the absolute stellar magnitude of these quasars is –13m, which corresponds to the luminosity of dwarf galaxies of low luminosity. It is suggested that the local quasars are formed in two ways: by ejection from galactic nuclei and in quasar associations without a parent galaxy, directly from protostellar matter.  相似文献

A new sample of M51-type galaxies consisting of 46 systems is used to estimate the B-band luminosity function. The luminosity function for the primary components of the systems can be described by a Schechter function with the parameters * = (1.4±0.3)×10-5 Mpc-3, = -1.3+0.4 -0.3, and M * = -20.3+0.2 -0.1. The values of the latter two parameters are comparable to those for isolated galactic pairs. The resulting estimate of the average density of M51-type galaxies is (4±3)% of the average density of isolated pairs for luminosities in the range -22m.0<M<-16m.0  相似文献

In this paper the magnetic superstar model is used to discuss QSO luminosity and density evolution. Our main hypotheses are that (i) mass loss from old stars in massive galaxies cools and then falls into the centre to form a nuclear disc (Bailey, 1980); and (ii) magnetic superstars in galactic nuclei condense out of gaseous material at the centre of a supermassive-magnetised disc (Kundt, 1979). On this generalised model we find that the non-thermal (synchrotron) optical luminosity scales asL opt L 3 t –7/3, whereL is the total blue luminosity of old stars in the galaxy and t is cosmic time. In addition we show that QSO co-moving density follows the lawD(t)exp-(t/t Evol)16/15 with an evolution timescalet Evol = 1.95 × 109 yr. Spectroscopy from the Infrared Space Observatory ISO has for the first timeprovided the sensitivity to exploit the diagnostic power ofmid-infrared fine structure lines and PAH features for the study ofultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIR >1012 L ). We report on observations obtainedwith SWS, ISOPHOT-S, and the CVF option of ISOCAM. From both fine structure lines and PAH features, we find that the majority of ULIRGs is predominantlypowered by star formation. Our total sample of about 75 ULIRGs allows tosearch for trends within the class of ULIRGs: The fraction of AGNs increaseswith luminosity above 3 × 1012L but there is no obvioustrend for ULIRGs to be more AGN-like with more advanced merger phase.  相似文献

Using published flux densitiesS at low frequenciesv, radio spectra were constructed for 3C, 4C, and 4CT radio sources in Abell clusters of galaxies, radio galaxies outside Abell clusters, and quasars with known redshifts. About half the sources in rich Abell clusters (richness classesR>-2) have steep spectra between 38 and 178 MHz with spectral indices 38 178 > whereSv . However, radio galaxies outside clusters have values of 38 178 1.2, and no steep spectra were found among 170 quasars. The radio sources in rich clusters are probably confined by intergalactic gas, and the steep spectra develop over a period of 109 yr as relativistic electrons lose energy. The absence of steep spectra among quasars does not necessarily mean that quasars never occur in rich clusters of galaxies, since quasars are probably being observed only in their early high-luminosity phases. The possibility that some quasar events occur in the nuclei of the dominant cD galaxies in clusters is discussed, but quasar events may occur in more than one type of galaxy.  相似文献

It is shown that the brightness of the spiral galactic nuclei at 10 depends on the Byurakan type of galaxies: the brightness is higher in the case of galaxies of types 5, 2s, 4, and 2 with optical signs of activity in comparison with galaxies of types 3 and 1 without optical signs of activity. The noted difference is larger when nonstellar emission at 10 is considered. The obtained results confirm conclusions made earlier on the activity of the nuclei of galaxies of types 5, 2s, 4, and 2.  相似文献

The observations of the reddening of the distant galaxies and the weak diffuse radiation in the clusters of galaxies can be interpreted as a consequence of the presence of dust grains in the intergalactic medium. When allowance is made for the destruction of the grains in collision with particles of the hot gas, its lifetime is about 107–108 yr at a gas concentrationn g 10–3 cm–3. The detection of the infrared (IR) emission from the galaxy clusters might be the test for the proof of the presence of dust grains in the intergalactic medium. In this paper the estimates of the expected intensities and fluxes of IR emission for the spectral region 50–300 are presented for two galaxy clusters in Coma and Perseus. The parameters of the hot gas spatial distribution are chosen from X-ray observations. Having assumed that intergalactic dust can be ejected only from the galaxies, we used such a model for intergalactic dust grains which explains very well the interstellar dust effects. It is shown that the dust temperature, which is determined from the general energetic balance of the dust grains, can achieve some scores of degrees of Kelvin. Two models of the dust spatial distribution are considered. It is found that the maximum of IR flux for the Coma cluster lies near =100 and the same for the Perseus cluster near 50–70. The total fluxes of IR emission from these clusters are about 105–106 Jy and can be detected by modern observational methods.  相似文献

Recent high resolution near infrared (HST-NICMOS) and mm-interferometric imaging have revealed dense gas and dust accretion disks in nearby ultra-luminous galactic nuclei. In the best studied ultraluminousIR galaxy, Arp 220, the 2m imaging shows dust disks in both of the merging galactic nuclei and mm-CO line imaging indicates molecular gasmasses 109M for each disk. The two gas disks in Arp 220 are counterrotating and their dynamical masses are 2×109 M , that is, only slightly largerthan the gas masses. These disks have radii 100 pc and thickness 10-50 pc. The high brightness temperatures of the CO lines indicatethat the gas in the disks has area filling factors 25-50% and mean densitiesof 104 cm-3. Within these nuclear disks, the rate of massive star formation is undoubtedly prodigious and, given the high viscosity of the gas, there will also be high radial accretion rates, perhaps 10 M yr -1. If this inflow persists to very small radii, it is enough to feed even the highest luminosity AGNs.  相似文献

The radial brightness distribution of the quiet Sun at 8.6 mm is synthesized from observations using a sixteen element east-west interferometer in Nagoya. The observed brightness is flat from the disk center to 0.8R . A slight darkening appeared between 0.8R and the limb. No evidence of the bright ring near the limb is found. The radio radius at 8.6 mm is 1.015±0.005R . In addition there exists a coronal component just outside the radio limb.  相似文献

The implications of the intrinsic luminosity evolution with cosmological epoch on the value of the density parameter () and evolution of radio sizes of extragalactic radio sources have been considered. It is shown that a power law evolution model of the sortP (1 +z) can be used to contrain the value of . In the presence of a strong luminosity evolution, the model yields an upper limit of 0.5.It is also shown that the angular diameter redshift ( – z) relation for quasars can be interpreted in terms of the assumed luminosity evolution combined with a luminosity-linear size correlation with little or no linear size evolution required. On the other hand, strong linear size evolution is needed to explain the – z data for radio galaxies independent of luminosity.  相似文献

It is shown that the Hubble curvem(z) for galaxies and quasars averaged over a large volume of data forms in the first approximation a single continuous curve in the interval of red shifts 10–2.5z4.5, which is satisfactorily described by the dependence .A large deviation of the observed mean dependence from the theoretical one predicted by the standard cosmology is explained by the evolution of the galaxy and especially quasar luminosity. The corresponding mid-statistical function of the absolute luminosity variation for the last 4/5 times of existence in the Universe is equal toM(z)M(z 0)=logz/z 0+2z–0.4z 2.The luminosity of the most far distant from the observed quasars on the average by 5–6 stellar magnitudes high than the luminosity of near galaxies and quasars. It is obtained that even the most far distant quasars atz5 are in the maximum of luminosity, or their extinction has just began, thus the quasar formation should be expected forz>(5–6). The relative rate of the luminosity decrease of galaxies and near quasars is rather accurately amounts in the recent epoch 7% per 109 years. The obtained average Hubble curve of galaxies and quasars is evidently the main cause of their evolution in the Universe.  相似文献

The brightness distribution of the quiet Sun at 8.6 mm wavelength is synthesized from off-meridian observations using an eight element east-west interferometer with a maximum base line of 16.38 m (1913). The observed brightness distribution is practically flat from the disk center to the optical limb. The effective radius of the nearly uniform component is 1.01 R . If the limb brightening is present, the brightening located between 0.95 R and 1.01 R , and the total flux density of the limb brightening is less than 1% of the total flux density of the Sun. In addition to the nearly uniform component there exists a coronal component just outside the optical limb.  相似文献

An analysis of radio and FIR emission in over 1500IRAS selected galaxies produces a good linear correlationbetween radio and FIR luminosity, indicating that star formationin normal field galaxies dominates the infrared luminosityin the local volume. Galaxies with clear radio-excess (definedas having at least5 times larger radio flux over expected from FIR) are identified as hosting a radio AGN, and they account for onlyabout 1% of the whole sample. This fraction increases to 10% among themore luminous galaxies with L 1.4GHz 1023 W Hz-1 (equivalently L 60m 1011 L), however. The characteristic mid-IR excess of a Seyfert nucleus is ubiquitously present amongthe radio-excess objects, suggesting that mid-IR excess isa robust tracer of an AGN despite the high mid-IR opacity.We conclude that about 30% of the luminous infrared galaxies(L 60m 1011 L) host an AGN based on themid-IR excess, and about 40% of the mid-IR excess AGNs alsohost a radio AGN. A VLA imaging survey of a distance limited sample of IR luminousgalaxies has revealed the presence of 100 kpc scale giant radioplumes in 3 out of 9 cases (Mrk 231, Mrk 273, NGC 6240). Theirlarge spatial extent, energetics, and presence of a powerful AGN in each case suggests that an AGN is the power source. Such plumesare not detected in other ultraluminous infrared galaxies which lack clear evidence for an AGN, such as Arp 220.  相似文献

A semi-continuous hierarchy, (i.e., one in which there are galaxies outside clusters, clusters outside superclusters etc.), is examined using an expression of the field equations of general relativity in a form due to Podurets, Misner and Sharp. It is shown (a) that for a sufficiently populous hierarchy, the thinning factor( i+1/ i [r i /r i+1] is approximately equal to the exponentN in a continuous density law (=aR –N) provided (r i /r i+1)3-1; (b) that a hierarchical Universe will not look decidedly asymmetric to an observer like a human being because such salient observers live close to the densest elements of the hierarchy (viz stars), the probability of the Universe looking spherically symmetric (dipole anisotropy0.1 to such an observer being of order unity; (c) the existence of a semi-continuous or continuous hierarchy (Peebles) requires that 2 if galaxies, not presently bound to clusters were once members of such systems; (d) there are now in existence no less than ten arguments for believing 2, though recent number counts by Sandageet al. seem to be in contradiction to such a value; (e) Hubble's law, withH independent of distance, can be proved approximately in a relativistic hierarchy provided (i)N=2, (ii)2GM(R)/c 2 R1; (iii)Rc (iv)M0 in a system of massM, sizeR (f) Hubble's law holds also in a hierarchy with density jumps; (g)H100 km s–1 Mpc–1; (h) objects forming the stellar level of the hierarchy (in a cosmology of the Wilson type) must once have had 2GM/c 2 R1; (i) there is a finite pressurep=2Ga in all astrophysical systems (a=R N ,N2); (j) for the Galaxy, theory predictsp G7×10–12 dyn cm–2, observation givesp G5×10–12 dyn cm–2; (k) if the mass-defect (or excess binding energy) hypothesis is taken as a postulate, all non-collapsed astrophysical systems must be non-static, and any non-static, p0 systems must in any case be losing mass; (1) the predicted mass-loss rate from the Sun is 1012 g s–1, compared to 1011 g s–1 in the observed solar wind; (m) the mass-loss rates known by observation imply timescales of 5×109 years for the Sun and 1010 years for other astrophysical systems; (n) degenerate superdense objects composed of fermions must haveN-2 if they were ever at their Schwarzschild radii and comprised a finite numberN B of baryons; (o)N B1057N for degenerate fermion and boson systems; (p)285-4; (q) the metric coefficients for superdense bodies give equations of motion that imply equal maximum luminosities for all evolving superdense bodies (L max1059 erg s–1); (r) larger bodies have longer time-scales of energy radiation atL max (10–5 s for stars,1 h for QSO's) (s) expansion velocities are c soon after the initial loss of equilibrium in a superdense object; (t) if the density parametera(t) in aR –N isa=a (non-atomic constants of physicsc, G, A), andA, thenN=2; (u) N2 is necessary to giveMM at the stellar level of the hierarchy;(v) systems larger than, and including, galaxies must have formed by clumping of smaller systems and not (as advocated by Wertz and others) in a multiple big bang.  相似文献
