The aim of the paper is to describe hydraulic stability of rock-armoured low-crested structures on the basis of new experimental tests and prototype observations.Rock armour stability results from earlier model tests under non-depth-limited long-crested head-on waves are reviewed. Results from new 2-D and 3-D model tests, carried out at Aalborg University, are presented. The tests were performed on detached low-crested breakwaters exposed to short-crested head-on and oblique waves, including depth-limited conditions. A formula that corresponds to initiation of hydraulic damage and allows determining armour stone size in shallow water conditions is given together with a rule of thumb for the required stone size in depth-limited design waves.Rock toe stability is discussed on the basis of prototype experience, hard bottom 2-D tests in depth-limited waves and an existing hydraulic stability formula. Toe damage predicted by the formula is in agreement with experimental results. In field sites, damage at the toe induced by scour or by sinking is observed and the volume of the berm is often insufficient to avoid regressive erosion of the armour layer.Stone sinking and settlement in selected sites, for which detailed information is available, are presented and discussed.

The short communication presents application of the conventional Van der Meer stability formula for low-crested breakwaters for the prediction of front slope erosion of statically stable berm breakwaters with relatively high berms. The method is verified (Burcharth, 2008) by comparison with the reshaping of a large Norwegian breakwater exposed to the North Sea waves. As a motivation for applying the Van der Meer formula a discussion of design parameters related to berm breakwater stability formulae is given. Comparisons of front erosion predicted by the use of the Van der Meer formula with model test results including tests presented in Sigurdarson and Van der Meer (2011) are discussed. A proposal is presented for performance of new model tests with the purpose of developing more accurate formulae for the prediction of front slope erosion as a function of front slope, relative berm height, relative berm width, method of armour stone placement, and hydraulic parameters. The formulae should cover the structure range from statically stable berm breakwaters to conventional double layer armoured breakwaters.

In this study, waves with the heights higher than H1/3 in an irregular wave train are called as extreme waves and defined with the help of extreme wave parameter, αextreme. In order to see the effect of extreme waves on the design weight of armour stone, stability analysis is carried out based on the hydraulic model test results. The test results of high αextreme cases (HE) and low αextreme cases (LE) are compared with currently used van der Meer's formulae with permeability factor P=0.4 and 0.45 and Hudson formula by using H1/3 and H1/10 in terms of the design weight of armour stone. As a result of the comparison, it is found that Hudson formula by using H1/3 underestimates the necessary armour weight. Usage of H1/10 instead of H1/3 in Hudson formula doubles the weight which seems overestimated when Irribaren number is away from the transition zone in which both wave run-up and run-down forces become effective. However, it seems underestimated near the transition zone where experiment case HE gives higher armour weights. When the design weight of armour stone is calculated by van der Meer's formulae with P=0.4, it may be necessary to increase the weight up to 30% in the case of high extreme waves. On the other hand, van der Meer's formulae may overestimate the weight 14% when the extreme waves are low.

This paper presents the results from an experimental investigation of the pressure-induced forces in the core material below the main armour layer and shear stresses on the armour layer for a porous breakwater structure. Two parallel experiments were performed which both involved pore pressure measurements in the core material: (1) core material with an idealized armour layer made out of spherical objects that also allowed for detailed velocity measurements between and above the armour, and (2) core material with real rock armour stones. The same core material was applied through the entire structure i.e. no additional filter layers were applied. For both experiments, high-speed video recordings were synchronised with the pressure measurements for a detailed investigation of the coupling between the run-up and run-down flow processes and the measured pressure variations. Outward directed pressure gradients were found which exerted a lift force up to ≈ 60% of the submerged weight of the core material. These maximum outward directed pressure gradients were linked to the maximum run-down event and were in general situated at, or slightly below, the maximum run-down level. Detailed velocity and turbulence measurements showed that the large outward directed pressure gradients in general coincide, both in time and space, with the maximum bed-shear stresses on the armour layer based on the Reynolds-stresses. The bed-shear stresses were found to result in a Shields parameter in the same order of magnitude as the critical value for movement of the armour stones.

Stability formulae for armour layers of rubble mound breakwaters are usually being applied assuming perpendicular wave attack. Often the effects of oblique waves are neglected. This is however a conservative assumption since the stability of armour slopes generally increases for oblique waves. New wave basin tests have been performed to assess the effects of oblique waves on the stability of rock slopes and the stability of cube armoured rubble mound breakwaters. The physical model tests were focussed on wave directions between perpendicular (0°) and parallel (90°). The test programme included tests with long-crested waves and tests with short-crested waves. The results show that for rock slopes the influence of oblique waves is larger for long-crested waves. Based on the test results a design guideline is provided to account for effects of oblique waves on the stability of rock slopes, armour layers with a double layer of cubes, and armour layers with a single layer of cubes.

Ocean waves can be destructive as steeper waves due to their high energy eroding the sandy beaches. During storm surge or high tide, the water level rises and if large waves occur, they will break closer to the beach, releasing enormous amount of energy resulting in strong currents. This causes heavy loss of beach material due to large-scale erosion. If these waves are made to break prematurely and away from the beach, they can be attenuated so as to reduce beach erosion. The reef, which is a homogeneous pile of armour units without a core, breaks the steeper ocean waves, dissipates a major portion of their energy and transmits attenuated waves. This paper experimentally investigates the armour stone stability of the submerged reef and the influence of its varying distance from shore and crest width on ocean wave transmission.

Based on an extensive database of more than 4000 data, this paper analyses wave reflection for various types of coastal structures in design conditions, such as smooth, rock and armour unit slopes. A new simple formula has been developed that relates the reflection coefficient to the breaker parameter and seems to fit all kinds of revetment materials by changing two coefficients. These coefficients depend only on the correct roughness factor, provided by recent research on overtopping discharges. The effects on reflection due to composite slopes and to low crests are also examined and proper extensions of the formula are provided.

The toe structure of a breakwater provides support to the armour layer and protects the structure from damage due to scour at the toe. Often a toe structure consists of rock material. Several design formulae exist to predict the amount of damage to the toe structure under wave loading. These design formulae for the required rock size include effects of the wave height and the water depth above the toe structure. Here, rock toe stability has been studied by means of physical model tests to provide information on the required rock size in the toe structure. The tests and analysis are focussed not only on the influence of the wave height and the water depth above the toe structure, but also on the influence of the width of the toe structure, the thickness of the toe and the wave steepness. The wave steepness, width of the toe and the thickness of the toe appear to affect the damage to the toe; these parameters need to be taken into account in order to derive accurate predictions of the damage to the toe structure. Based on the test results a prediction formula has been derived including these effects. The formula can be used to determine the required rock size in the toe of rubble mound breakwaters within the ranges of the performed tests.

Rubble mound breakwaters usually consist of armour, filter and core layers. The units used in the armour layer are natural rock or concrete. Although natural rock is usually preferred, it is not always possible to apply it. There are some advantages to using concrete units: they have a high stability coefficient under wave attack, and they are easily produced at work sites. Tetrapod and cube blocks are widely used in breakwaters as armour units.Rubble mound breakwaters are subjected not only to wave activity but also other types of environmental loading, such as earthquakes. Although rubble-mound breakwaters are most likely the most common type of breakwaters, they have received little attention regarding their response to seismic activity. The objective of this study is to present the dynamic response of a breakwater armoured by tetrapods placed by two different placement methods and armoured by cubes during seismic loadings experimentally and numerically. A shaking tank was developed for the experimental study. The breakwater models sit on a rigid bed, and the model scale is 1/50. A one-dimensional shaking tank was used to understand simple responses of the rubble mound breakwaters under seismic loads. The tank allows only one degree of freedom. A raining crane system was developed to achieve the same packing density and porosity for the core material. The shape of the model breakwater before and after the tests was measured using a profiler and was recorded by computer. However, crest lowering and the level of damage on slopes were determined from profiler records. The dynamic responses of the model breakwaters were also investigated using an image processing technique. For numerical simulation, software using finite element method was used. The results obtained from the experiment and numerical model may help designers build breakwaters armoured by artificial units.

The geometrical properties of the armor layer of rubble mound breakwaters were investigated by observations made on two cases. The first case is a laboratory-scaled model of natural rock, designed with a composite slope. The second is a breakwater in the sea, constructed with a uniform slope of tetrapods. In both cases the cross-section underwent changes, resulting in an apparently stable profile of composite slope. This implied that for stability the optimal armour layer should be of composite slope. The general nature of this profile was implied by the geometrical similarity between the two cases which were basically so different.

The main idea concerned with the design of berm breakwaters is to construct a less expensive structure with reshaping berm. An experimental study on the front slope stability of homogeneous berm breakwaters has been carried out in a large number of 2D model tests at Tarbiat Modares University. In this paper, the results of this experimental study are presented conjointly with a formula for estimation of berm recession as the most important parameter for describing the reshaping. This includes the influence of wave height and period, storm duration, berm width and elevation variations on the stability of berm breakwater with different armor stone sizes. A total of 222 tests have been performed to cover the impact of these parameters. According to the present research, one can observe that considering different armor stone sizes, berm width is a significant parameter concerning reshaping of a berm breakwater that has not been covered in previous works, so that as the berm width increases the amount of berm recession decreases. To assess the validity of the present formula, comparisons are made between the estimated berm recessions by this formula and formulae given by other researchers, showing that the estimation procedure foretells berm recession well according to the present data. It is observed that the recession estimated by the present formula has comparatively better correlation with the present experimental data, and also with other experimental results within the range of parameters tested.

A systematic armour stability and the hydraulic performance, including wave reflection, wave transmission, experimental study in the twin-wave flumes of Leichtweiss-Institute (LWI) is performed on a geocore breakwater and a conventional rubble mound breakwater in order to comparatively determine the wave run-up and wave overtopping. The geocore breakwater consists of a core made of sand-filled geotextile containers (GSC) covered by an armour made of rock. The geocore is more than an order of magnitude less permeable than the quarry run core of a conventional breakwater. As expected, the core permeability substantially affects the armour stability on the seaside slope, the wave transmission and the wave overtopping performance. Surprisingly, however, wave reflection and hydraulic stability of the rear slope are less affected. Formulae for the armour stability and hydraulic performance of the geocore breakwater are proposed, including wave reflection, transmission, run-up and overtopping.

The unbonded flexible pipe of eight layers,in which all the layers except the carcass layer are assumed to have isotropic properties, has been analyzed.Specifically, the carcass layer shows the orthotropic characteristics. The effective elastic moduli of the carcass layer have been developed in terms of the influence of deformation to stiffness. With consideration of the effective elastic moduli, the structure can be properly analyzed. Also the relative movements of tendons and relative displacements of wires in helical armour layer have been investigated.A three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model has been presented to predict the response of flexible pipes under axial force and torque.Further, the friction and contact of interlayer have been considered.Comparison between the finite element model and experimental results obtained in literature has been given and discussed, which might provide practical and technical support for the application of unbonded flexible pipes.

This paper describes a major programme of small-scale physical model tests to establish better the influence of armour type and configuration on overtopping. Specifically, 179 tests determined the relative difference in overtopping behaviour for 13 types/configurations of armour. Roughness factors γf were determined for rock (two layers), cubes (single layer and two layers), Tetrapod, Antifer, Haro, Accropode, Core-Loc™ and Xbloc™. These roughness influence factors have been included in the CLASH database and are for use in the neural network prediction of overtopping. Individual wave-by-wave overtopping volumes were analysed and found to compare well with current prediction methods. Measured reflection coefficients for the different units are also presented and compared with recent formulae.

A new empirical stability criterion for dolos-armoured, rubble-mound breakwaters is proposed. This criterion is based on an analysis of the energy level at which dolos armour units fracture and break in a breakwater environment. The input information has been obtained from ten different prototype breakwaters. The present analysis indicates the ratio of the wave energy to size (mass) of the armour units at which dolos units break.
