Sediment oxygen uptake and net sediment-water fluxes of dissolved inorganic and organic nitrogen and phosphorus were measured at two sites in Fourleague Bay, Louisiana, from August 1981, through May 1982. This estuary is an extension of Atchafalaya Bay which receives high discharge and nutrient loading from the Atchafalaya River. Sediment O2 uptake averaged 49 mg m?2 h?1. On the average, ammonium (NH4 +) was released from the sediments (mean flux =+129 μmol m?2 h?1), and NO3 ? was taken up (mean flux =?19 μmol m?2h?1). However, very different NO3 ? fluxes were observed at the two sites, with sediment uptake at the upper, river-influenced, high NO3 ? site (mean flux =?112 μmol m?2 h?1) and release at the lower, marine-influenced low NO3 ? site (mean flux =+79 μmol m?2 h?1). PO4 3? fluxes were low and often negative (mean flux =?8 μmol m?2 h?1), while dissolved organic phosphorus fluxes were high and positive (mean flux =+124 μmol m?2 h?1). Dissolved organic nitrogen fluxes varied greatly, ranging from a mean of +305 μmol m?2 h?1 at the lower bay, to ?710 μmol m?2 h?1 at the upper bay. Total dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus fluxes indicated the sediments were a nitrogen (mean flux =+543 μmol m?2 h?1) and phosphorus source (mean flux =+30 μmol m?2 h?1) at the lower bay, and a nitrogen sink (mean flux =?553 μmol m?2 h?1) and phosphorus source (mean flux =+17 μmol m?2 h?1) in the upper bay. Mean annual O∶N ration of the positive inorganic sediment fluxes were 27∶1 at the upper bay and 18∶1 at the lower bay. Based on these data we hypothesize that nitrification and denitrification are important sediment processes in the upper bay. We further hypothesize that Atchafalaya River discharge affects sediment-water fluxes through seasonally high nutrient loading which leads to net nutrient uptake by sediments in the upper bay and release in the lower bay, where there is less river influnces.  相似文献

Net fluxes of respiratory metabolites (O2, dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), NH4 +, NO3 ?, and NO2 ?) across the sediment-water interface were measured using in-situ benthic incubation chambers in the area of intermittent seasonal hypoxia associated with the Mississippi River plume. Sulfate reduction was measured in sediments incubated with trace levels of35S-labeled sulfate. Heterotrophic remineralization, measured as nutrient regeneration, sediment community oxygen consumption (SOC), sulfate reduction, or DIC production, varied positively as a function of temperature. SOC was inversely related to oxygen concentration of the bottom water. The DIC fluxes were more than 2 times higher than SOC alone, under hypoxic conditions, suggesting that oxygen uptake alone cannot be used to estimate total community remineralization under conditions of low oxygen concentration in the water column. A carbon budget is constructed that compares sources, stocks, transformations, and sinks of carbon in the top meter of sediment. A comparison of remineralization processes within the sediments implicates sulfate reduction as most important, followed by aerobic respiration and denitrification. Bacteria accounted for more than 90% of the total community biomass, compared to the metazoan invertebrates, due presumably to hypoxic stress.  相似文献

There has been considerable discussion but little experimental evidence regarding the comparability of in-situ and remote (shipboard or laboratory) incubations for the determination of sediment oxygen consumption and benthic nutrient flux rates. This paper presents the results of such a comparison, using in situ chamber and shipboard chemostatic systems, for a shallow station on the Louisiana, continental shelf during April 1992. Results indicated no methodological differences between rates of sediment oxygen consumption and nutrient flux (NH4 +, NO5 ?, NO2 ?, PO4 3?, and SiO2/Si(OH)2) that could be attributed to the removal of cores from shelf sediments. This conclusion implies that subcoring from box cores is no more destructive of sediment structure and salient environmental characteristics than chamber emplacement. Differences between the methods occurred when ambient oxygen concentrations were low (<2 ml l?1). These differences were caused by initial reaeration of bottom water in the shipboard system and reflect the sensitivity of heterotrophic metabolism, dissolution kinetics, and diffusive fluxes to low oxygen concentrations. The differences in exchange rates observed in this study reiterate the importance in maintaining ambient conditions in the experimental apparatus. The results of this study corroborate the small body of, data that addresses this issue and extends methodological similarities to include nutrient exchanges. Given the comparability of rates, use of remote chemostatic systems is more advantageous for work in shelf environments than in-situ batch methods due to increased statistical rigor, logistical convenience, and the ability to minimize changes in experimental conditions during incubations.  相似文献

Community Oxygen and Nutrient Fluxes in Seagrass Beds of Florida Bay, USA   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We used clear, acrylic chambers to measure in situ community oxygen and nutrient fluxes under day and night conditions in seagrass beds at five sites across Florida Bay five times between September 1997 and March 1999. Underlying sediments are biogenic carbonate with porosities of 0.7–0.9 and with low organic content (<1.6%). The seagrass communities always removed oxygen from the water column during the night and produced oxygen during daylight, and sampling date and site significantly affected both night and daytime oxygen fluxes. Net daily average fluxes of oxygen (?4.9 to 49 mmol m?2 day?1) ranged from net autotrophy to heterotrophy across the bay and during the 18-month sampling period. However, the Rabbit Key Basin site, located in the west-central bay and covered with a dense Thalassia testudinum bed, was always autotrophic with net average oxygen production ranging from 4.8 to 49 mmol m?2 day?1. In November 1998, three of the five sites were strongly heterotrophic and oxygen production was least at Rabbit, suggesting the possibility of hypoxic conditions in fall. Average ammonium (NH4) concentrations in the water column varied widely across the bay, ranging from a mean of 6.9 μmol l?1 at Calusa in the eastern bay to a mean of 0.6 μmol l?1 at Rabbit Key for the period of study. However, average NH4 fluxes by site and date (?240 to 110 μmol m?2 h?1) were not correlated with water column concentrations and did not vary in a consistent diel, seasonal, or spatial pattern. Concentrations of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in the water column, averaged by site (15–25 μmol l?1), were greater than mean NH4 concentrations, and the range of day and night DON fluxes (?920 to 1,300 μmol m?2 h?1), averaged by site and date, was greater than the range of mean NH4 fluxes. Average DON fluxes did not vary consistently from day to night, seasonally or spatially. Mean silicate fluxes ranged from ?590 to 860 μmol m?2 h?1 across all sites and dates, but mean net daily fluxes were less variable and most of the time contributed small amounts of silicate to the water column. Mean concentrations of filterable reactive phosphorus (FRP) in the water column across the bay were very low (0.021–0.075 μmol l?1); but site average concentrations of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) were higher (0.04–0.15 μmol l?1) and showed a gradient of increasing concentration from east to west in the bay. A pronounced gradient in average surficial sediment total phosphorus (1.1–12 μmol g DW?1) along an east-to-west gradient was not reflected in fluxes of phosphorus. FRP fluxes, averaged by site and date, were low (?5.2 to 52 μmol m?2 h?1), highly variable, and did not vary consistently from day to night or across season or location. Mean DOP fluxes varied over a smaller range (?8.7 to 7.4 μmol m?2 h?1), but also showed no consistent spatial or temporal patterns. These small DOP fluxes were in sharp contrast to the predominately organic phosphorus pool in surficial sediments (site means?=?0.66–7.4 μmol g DW?1). Significant correlations of nutrient fluxes with parameters related to seagrass abundance suggest that the seagrass community may play a major role in nutrient recycling. Integrated means of net daily fluxes over the area of Florida Bay, though highly variable, suggest that seagrass communities might be a source of DOP and NH4 to Florida Bay and might remove small amounts of FRP and potentially large amounts of DON from the waters of the bay.  相似文献

Six synoptic samplings of nutrient concentrations of the water column and point-source inputs (rivers, sewage treatment plants) were conducted in the Seekonk-Providence River region of Narragansett Bay. Concentrations of nutrients (NH4 +, NO2 ?+NO3 ?, PO4 ?3, dissolved silicon, particulate N, particulate C) were predicted using a conservative, two-layer box model in order to assess the relative influence of external inputs and internal processes on observed concentrations. Although most nutrients were clearly affected by processes internal to the system, external input and mixing explained most of the variability in and absolute magnitude of observed concentrations, especially for dissolved constituents. In the bay as a whole, two functionally distinct regions can now be identified: the Seekonk-Providence River, where dissolved nutrient concentrations are externally controlled and lower Narragansett Bay where internal processes regulate the behavior of nutrients. A preliminary nitrogen budget suggests that the Seekonk-Providence River exports some 95% of the nitrogen entering the system via point sources and bottom water from upper Narragansett Bay.  相似文献

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) was quantified at select sites in San Francisco Bay (SFB) from radium (223Ra and 224Ra) and radon (222Rn) activities measured in groundwater and surface water using simple mass balance box models. Based on these models, discharge rates in South and Central Bays were 0.3?C7.4?m3?day?1?m?1. Although SGD fluxes at the two regions (Central and South Bays) of SFB were of the same order of magnitude, the dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) species associated with SGD were different. In the South Bay, ammonium (NH 4 + ) concentrations in groundwater were three-fold higher than in open bay waters, and NH 4 + was the primary DIN form discharged by SGD. At the Central Bay site, the primary DIN form in groundwater and associated discharge was nitrate (NO 3 ? ). The stable isotope signatures (??15NNO3 and ??18ONO3) of NO 3 ? in the South Bay groundwater and surface waters were both consistent with NO 3 ? derived from NH 4 + that was isotopically enriched in 15N by NH 4 + volatilization. Based on the calculated SGD fluxes and groundwater nutrient concentrations, nutrient fluxes associated with SGD can account for up to 16?% of DIN and 22?% of DIP in South and Central Bays. The form of DIN contributed to surface waters from SGD may impact the ratio of NO 3 ? to NH 4 + available to phytoplankton with implications to bay productivity, phytoplankton species distribution, and nutrient uptake rates. This assessment of nutrient delivery via groundwater discharge in SFB may provide vital information for future bay ecological wellbeing and sensitivity to future environmental stressors.  相似文献

Subterranean estuaries are highly dynamic in processing dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN). Here we investigate DIN turnover in surface sediments (0–20 cm depth) at the higher, medium and lower intertidal of a seepage face, i.e., the outer “mouth” of the subterranean estuary, during four consecutive seasons in Sanggou Bay, China. Throughout the studied period, ammonium (NH4+) and nitrite (NO2?) concentrations in the sampled porewaters did not vary significantly with depth or season. In contrast, peaks in porewater nitrate (NO3?) concentration and decreases in δ15N-NO3? and δ18O-NO3? were observed in the 15–20 cm depth (bottom) sediment, particularly during summer and autumn. Coupled with NO3? production, the sediment total nitrogen was also markedly peaking in the bottom layer of the studied seepage face. Together with abundant heterotrophic microbes in the sediment, this NO3? accumulation was linked to a reaction chain including organic matter decomposition, ammonification and nitrification. During winter, porewater enrichment in total nitrogen occurred closer to the surface of the seepage face but triggered also active NO3? production. This pattern reinforced the importance of pelagic organic matter supply on NO3? production. In the shallower depths of the seepage face (<12 cm), active net NO3? removal occurred except in winter. The isotopic fractionation (δ15N-NO3? and δ18O-NO3?) and metagenomic results revealed denitrification as the main pathway for NO3? reduction. Biological assimilation from benthic primary producers may also consume a fraction of NO3? at the sediment water interface. Both NO3? production and removal significantly varied in magnitude with season (?13.6 to 6.2 nmol cm?3 h?1). Substrate supply was the key driver for nitrate cycling, as evidenced by the high NO3? production rate in spring by comparison to autumn. The highest NO3? turnover rates were found in summer, suggesting the combined influence of advection rates and sediment microbiota composition. In spite of active removal (peak NO3? removal capability: 61%), a significant amount of NO3? was still transported from the seepage face into the bay waters. The magnitude of NO3? fluxes ranged from 312 to 476 kg N d?1, accounting for approximately 15% of the total exogenous NO3? loading into the bay. NO3? isotopic fingerprint revealed chemical fertilizer as the main source of terrestrial NO3? in SGD, highlighting the importance of land use to coastal system nitrogen budgets.  相似文献

This paper deals with the spatial and seasonal recycling of organic matter in sediments of two temperate small estuaries (Elorn and Aulne, France). The spatio-temporal distribution of oxygen, nutrient and metal concentrations as well as the organic carbon and nitrogen contents in surficial sediments were determined and diffusive oxygen fluxes were calculated. In order to assess the source of organic carbon (OC) in the two estuaries, the isotopic composition of carbon (δ 13C) was also measured. The temporal variation of organic matter recycling was studied during four seasons in order to understand the driving forces of sediment mineralization and storage in these temperate estuaries. Low spatial variability of vertical profiles of oxygen, nutrient, and metal concentrations and diffusive oxygen fluxes were monitored at the station scale (within meters of the exact location) and cross-section scale. We observed diffusive oxygen fluxes around 15 mmol m?2 day?1 in the Elorn estuary and 10 mmol m?2 day?1 in the Aulne estuary. The outer (marine) stations of the two estuaries displayed similar diffusive O2 fluxes. Suboxic and anoxic mineralization was large in the sediments from the two estuaries as shown by the rapid removal of very high bottom water concentrations of NO x ? (>200 μM) and the large NH4 + increase at depth at all stations. OC contents and C/N ratios were high in upstream sediments (11–15 % d.w. and 4–6, respectively) and decreased downstream to values around 2 % d.w. and C/N ≤ 10. δ 13C values show that the organic matter has different origins in the two watersheds as exemplified by lower δ 13C values in the Aulne watershed. A high increase of δ 13C and C/N values was visible in the two estuaries from upstream to downstream indicating a progressive mixing of terrestrial with marine organic matter. The Elorn estuary is influenced by human activities in its watershed (urban area, animal farming) which suggest the input of labile organic matter, whereas the Aulne estuary displays larger river primary production which can be either mineralized in the water column or transferred to the lower estuary, thus leaving a lower mineralization in Aulne than Elorn estuary. This study highlights that (1) meter scale heterogeneity of benthic biogeochemical properties can be low in small and linear macrotidal estuaries, (2) two estuaries that are geographically close can show different pattern of organic matter origin and recycling related to human activities on watersheds, (3) small estuaries can have an important role in recycling and retention of organic matter.  相似文献

The Pomeranian Bay is a coastal region fed by the Oder River, one of the seven largest Baltic rivers, whose waters flow through a large and complex estuarine system before entering the bay. Nutrients (NO3 , NO2 , NH4 +, Ntot, PO4 3−, Ptot, DSi), chlorophylla concentrations, oxygen content, salinity, and temperature were measured in the Pomeranian Bay in nine seasonally distributed cruises during 1993–1997. Strong spatial and temporal patterns were observed and they were governed by: the seasonally variable riverine water-nutrient discharges, the seasonally variable uptake of nutrients and their cycling in the river estuary and the Bay, the character of water exchange between the Pomeranian Bay and the Szczecin Lagoon, and the water flow patterns in the Bay that are dominated by wind-driven circulation. Easterly winds resulted in water and nutrient transport along the German coastline, while westerly winds confined the nutrient rich riverine waters to the Polish coast and transported them eastward beyond the study area. Two water masses, coastal and open, characterized by different chemical and physical parameters and chla content were found in the Bay independently of the season. The role of the Oder estuary in nutrient transformation, as well as the role of temperature in transformation processes is stressed in the paper. The DIN:DIP:DSi ratio indicated that phosphorus most probably played a limiting role in phytoplankton production in the Bay in spring, while nitrogen did the same in summer. During the spring bloom, predominated by diatoms, the DSi:DIN ratio dropped to 0.1 in the coastal waters and to 0.6 in the open bay waters, pointing to silicon limitation of diatom growth, similar to what is being observed in other Baltic regions.  相似文献

Benthic macroinvertebrate biomass and ammonium excretion rates were measured at four stations in the Gulf of Mexico near the Mississippi River mouth. Calculated areal excretion rates were then compared to sediment-water nitrogen fluxes measured in benthic bottom lander chambers at similar stations to estimate the potential importance of macroinvertebrate excretion to sediment nitrogen mineralization. Excretion rates for individual crustaceans (amphipods and decapods) was 2–21 nmoles NH4 + (mg dry weight)?1 h?1. The mean excretion rates for the polychaetes, Paraprionaspio pinnata [6–12 nmoles NH4 + (mg dry weight)?1h?1] and Magelona sp. [27–53 nmoles NH4 + (mg dry weight)?1h?1], were comparable or higher than previous measurements for similar size benthic or pelagic invertebrates incubated at the same temperature (22±1°C). Although the relatively high rates of excretion by these selective feeders may have been partially caused by experimental handling effects (e.g., removal from sediment substrates), they probably reflected the availability of nitrogen-rich food supplies in the Mississippi River plume. When the measured weight-specific rates were extrapolated to total areal biomass, areal macroinvertebrate excretion estimates ranged from 7 μmole NH4 + m?2h?1 at a 40-m deep station near the river mouth to 18 μmole NH4 + m?2h?1 at a shallower (28-m deep) station further from the river mouth. The net flux of ammonium and nitrate from the sediments to the water measured in bottom lander chambers in the same region were 15–53 μmole NH4 + m?2h?1 and ?25–21 μmole NO3 ? m?2h?1. These results suggest that excretion of NH4 + by macroinvertebrates could be a potentially important component of benthic nitrogen regeneration in the Mississippi River plume-Gulf shelf region.  相似文献

This paper summarizes evidence that most of the considerable nitrogen loading (~8, 470 mmol total N m?2 yr?1) to Boston Harbor (Massachusetts, USA) is expelled to shallow shelf waters of Massachusetts Bay, where it strongly influences ecological dynamics. Examination of nitrogen concentrations in the harbor, compared with loading, indicated that removal processes are active in the harbor. Comparison to other estuarine systems showed that the harbor’s nitrogen concentrations are consistent with its loading, if they are corrected for tidal flushing effects on the water residence time. Furthermore, extensive measurements of sediment denitrification confirmed that rates of N2 gas loss are high in an absolute sense (~600–800 mmol N m?2 yr?1) but nonetheless remove only a small portion (<10%) of the annual land-derived nitrogen loading. Burial in sediments apparently removes only about 2% of the N input, implying export to offshore environments as the major removal process (~88–90% of N input). Western Massachusetts Bay receiving waters were examined for a signature of export from the harbor. Data consistently show a gradient of decreasing nitrogen concentrations from the harbor to about 10–20 km into the bay. In many cases, plots of nitrogen concentrations versus salinity show nearly conservative mixing character, which implies virtual export. Seasonally, the data suggest most of the export from the harbor in winter is as dissolved inorganic forms (NH4 +, NO3 ?, NO2 ?). In summer, export is dominated by the outflow of organic nitrogen forms. Chlorophyll export is evident as well, suggesting that the nutritional coupling of the harbor and bay in summer involves organic fertilization of the bay’s surface water. Finally, high-resolution studies over different stages of the tidal cycle help refine understanding of the advection of chlorophyll and stimulation of in situ chlorophyll growth at the seaward edge of the tidal excursion into the bay.  相似文献

Previous measurements from cool microtidal temperate areas suggest that microphytobenthic incorporation of nitrogen (N) exceeds N removal by denitrification in illuminated shallow-water sediments. The present study investigates if this is true also for fully nontidal sediments in the Baltic Sea., Sediment-water fluxes of inorganic (DIN) and, organic nitrogen (DON) and oxygen, as well as denitrification, were measured in early autumn and spring, in light and dark, at four sites representing different sediment types. All sediments were autotrophic during the daytime both in the autumn and spring. On a 24-h time scale, they were autotrophic in the spring and heterotrophic in early autumn. Sediments funcitoned as sources of DIN and DON during the autumn and sinks during the spring, with DON fluxes dominating or being as important as DIN fluxes. Microphytobenthos (MPB) activity controlled fluxes of both DIN and DON. Significant differences between sites were found, although sediment type (sand or silt) had no consistent effect on the magnitude of MPB production or nutrient fluxes. The clearest effect related to sediment type was found for denitrification, although only in the autumn, with higher rates in silty sediments. Estimated N assimilation by MPB, based on both net primary production (0.7–6.5 mmol N m−2 d−1) and on 80% of gross primary production (1.9–9.4 mmol N m−2 d−1) far exceeded measured rates of denitrification (0.01–0.16 mmol N m−2 d−1). A theoretical calculation showed that MPB may incorporate between 40% and 100% of the remineralized N, while denitrification removes, <5%. MPB assimilation of N appears to be a far more important N consuming process than denitrification in these nontidal, shallow-water sediments.  相似文献

Eutrophication of lakes and reservoirs has become a worldwide environmental problem, and nitrogen (N) has been recognized as one of the key factors responsible for eutrophication. Nitrogen adsorbed on sediments may be released via chemical and biological processes under changing environmental conditions. Spatial distributions of concentrations of ammonia nitrogen (NH4 +–N), nitrate nitrogen (NO3 ?–N) and total nitrogen (TN) were investigated in sediments and overlying water of Dongting Lake, the second largest freshwater lake in China. The concentration of TN in the sediments exhibited strong spatial variation with relatively high values in the eastern part and relatively low values in the southern part of the lake. The TN concentration in the water of different regions of Dongting Lake was affected by the internal load of sediment N. The vertical distribution of TN in sediment cores showed a decreasing trend with an increase in depth. Concentrations of NH4 +–N in the sediment cores decreased with the depth increase until 6–8 cm and then increased slowly. However, concentrations of NO3 ?–N in the sediment cores showed an opposite trend from those of NH4 +–N. A kinetic release experiment of NH4 +–N showed that the maximum release rate occurred in the first 5 min and the amount of NH4 +–N release reached 77.93–86.34 % of the total amount in 0–10 min. The release of NH4 +–N in the surface sediments of Dongting Lake fits a first-order kinetics function.  相似文献

Benthic nitrogen (N) cycling was investigated at six stations along a transect traversing the Peruvian oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) at 11°S. An extensive dataset including porewater concentration profiles and in situ benthic fluxes of nitrate (NO3), nitrite (NO2) and ammonium (NH4+) was used to constrain a 1-D reaction-transport model designed to simulate and interpret the measured data at each station. Simulated rates of nitrification, denitrification, anammox and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) by filamentous large sulfur bacteria (e.g. Beggiatoa and Thioploca) were highly variable throughout the OMZ yet clear trends were discernible. On the shelf and upper slope (80-260 m water depth) where extensive areas of bacterial mats were present, DNRA dominated total N turnover (?2.9 mmol N m−2 d−1) and accounted for ?65% of NO3 + NO2 uptake by the sediments from the bottom water. Nonetheless, these sediments did not represent a major sink for dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN = NO3 + NO2 + NH4+) since DNRA reduces NO3 and, potentially NO2, to NH4+. Consequently, the shelf and upper slope sediments were recycling sites for DIN due to relatively low rates of denitrification and high rates of ammonium release from DNRA and ammonification of organic matter. This finding contrasts with the current opinion that sediments underlying OMZs are a strong sink for DIN. Only at greater water depths (300-1000 m) did the sediments become a net sink for DIN. Here, denitrification was the major process (?2 mmol N m−2 d−1) and removed 55-73% of NO3 and NO2 taken up by the sediments, with DNRA and anammox accounting for the remaining fraction. Anammox was of minor importance on the shelf and upper slope yet contributed up to 62% to total N2 production at the 1000 m station. The results indicate that the partitioning of oxidized N (NO3, NO2) into DNRA or denitrification is a key factor determining the role of marine sediments as DIN sinks or recycling sites. Consequently, high measured benthic uptake rates of oxidized N within OMZs do not necessarily indicate a loss of fixed N from the marine environment.  相似文献

Four months of daily nutrient and radon (a natural groundwater tracer) observations at the outlet of a heavily drained coastal wetland illustrated how episodic floods and diffuse groundwater seepage influence the biogeochemistry of a sub-tropical estuary (Richmond River, New South Wales, Australia). Our observations downstream of the Tuckean Swamp (an acid sulphate soil floodplain) covered a dry stage, a flood triggered by a 213-mm rain event and a post-flood stage when surface water chemistry was dominated by groundwater discharge. Significant correlations were found between radon and ammonium and N/P ratios and between radon and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) during the post-flood stage. While the flood lasted for 14?% of the time of the surface water time series, it accounted for 18?% of NH4, 32?% of NO x , 66?% of DON, 58?% of PO4 and 55?% of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) catchment exports. Over the 4-month study period, groundwater fluxes of 35.0, 3.6, 36.3, 0.5 and 0.7?mmol?m?2?day?1 for NH4, NO x , DON, PO4 and DOP, respectively, were estimated. The groundwater contribution to the total surface water catchment exports was nearly 100?% for ammonium, and <20?% for the other nutrients. Post-flood groundwater seepage shifted the system from a DON to a dissolved inorganic N-dominated system and doubled N/P ratios in surface waters. We hypothesise that the Richmond River Estuary N/P ratios may reflect a widespread trend of tidal rivers and estuaries becoming more groundwater-dominated and phosphorus-limited as coastal wetlands are drained for agriculture, grazing and development.  相似文献

Methods were developed for determining rates of denitrification in coastal marine sediments by measuring the production of N2 from undisturbed cores incubated in gas-tight chambers. Denitrification rates at summer temperatures (23°C) in sediment cores from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, were about 50μmol N2m?2 hr?1. This nitrogen flux is equal to approximately one-half of the NH+4flux from the sediments at this temperature and is of the magnitude necessary to account for the anomalously low N/P and anomalously high O/N ratios often reported for benthic nutrient fluxes. The loss of fixed nitrogen as N2 during the benthic remineralization of organic matter, coupled with the importance of benthic remineralization processes in shallow coastal waters may help to explain why the availability of fixed nitrogen is a major factor limiting primary production in these areas. Narragansett Bay sediments are also a source of N2O, but the amount of nitrogen involved was only about 0.2 μmol m?2 hr?1 at 23°C.  相似文献

Fate of riverine nitrate entering a well defined turbid estuary receiving discharges from the Atchafalaya River, a distributary of the Mississippi River, was determined. Seasonal distribution of NO3 and its transformations were measured in Four League Bay (9,300 ha). Denitrification was estimated by incubating wet samples in the presence of acetylene and monitoring N2O production. The annual sediment accumulation of N was also determined within the bay and within the adjacent marshes. Nitrogen accumulation ranged from 6.0 to 23 gN per m2 per yr on the marsh and 6.1 to 11.2 gN per m2 per yr in the bay. Denitrification in this system was controlled by the availability of NO3 ? with fluxes ranging from 2 to 70 ngN per g per hr. The annual (N2O +N2)-N emission was equivalent to 142 and 120 μg per g or 2.1 and 1.7 gN per m2 from the 5 bay and 5 marsh stations, respectively. Approximately 1.95×105 kgN, predominantly as N2, is being returned to the atmosphere via denitrification. We estimate this to be equivalent to 50% of the riverine NO3 ? entering this estuary. A significant amount was also assimilated within the estuary.  相似文献

Transport of ammonium (NH4 +), nitrate + nitrite (NO3 ?), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN), soluble reactive phosphate (SRP), and total suspended solids (TSS) was measured in a freshwater tidal bayou located in a marsh system near the mouth of the Atchafalaya River in Louisiana. Sampling was conducted six times over one year and was timed to assess effects of seasonal variation in river flow and mean sea level of the Gulf of Mexico on material fluxes. Net fluxes of all materials were large and ebb directed in all seasons except fall, when net transport was 2 to 3 orders-of-magnitude smaller than in any other season. These results demonstrate that riverine forcing was the primary influence on materials transport in all seasons except fall when tidal forcing was most important. The range of net fluxes (g s?1) for each nutrient was as follows (a negative sign indicates a net export toward the Gulf): NO3 ?, ?0.006 to ?6.69; TKN, 0.09 to ?10.41; NH4 +, ?0.02 to ?1.36; SRP, ?0.001 to ?0.53; TSS, ?2 to ?81. Analysis of nutrient concentrations indicated the marsh/aquatic system removed NO3 ?, SRP, and TSS from the water column from late spring through early fall and released NH4 + and TKN in summer. The results of this study show that net materials export per unit cross section channel area increased as riverine influence increased.  相似文献

In an annual cycle from March 2005 to February 2006, benthic nutrient fluxes were measured monthly in the Dongtan intertidal flat within the Changjiang (Yangtze River) Estuary. Except for NH4^+, there always showed high fluxes from overlying water into sediment for other four nutrients. Sediments in the high and middle marshes, covered with halophyte and consisting of macrofauna, demonstrated more capabilities of assimilating nutrients from overlying water than the low marsh. Sampling seasons and nutrient concentrations in the overlying water could both exert significant effects on these fluxes. Additionally, according to the model provided by previous study, denitrification rates, that utilizing NO3- transported from overlying water (Dw) in Dongtan sediments, were estimated to be from -16 to 193 μmol·h^-1·m^-2 with an average value of 63 μmol·h^-1·m^-2 (n=18). These estimated values are still underestimates of the in-situ rates owing to the lack of consideration of DN, i.e., denitrification supported by the local NO3^- production via nitrification.  相似文献

Studies of the composition of interstitial solutions of marine sediments have been carried out utilizing in situ sampling techniques. Samples were obtained from the Caribbean, North Atlantic and South Atlantic. In virtually all cases, diagenesis has led to the uptake of Mg2+ and K+ and the release of Ca2+, HCO?3 and Na+ by the solid phases. SO2?4 is slightly enriched at nearly all stations, reduction being observed only at continental margin stations. Cl? is conservative within experimental precision. The reactions controlling the fluxes of most components across the water-sediment interface occur almost entirely in the upper 100 cm of sediment. Contributions of Mg 2+, Ca 2+, K+ and HCO?3 from below 100 cm amount to less than 15% of the calculated fluxes across the interface. Reactions in the upper 30 cm account for 70–90% of the fluxes of these components across the interface. Only Na+ has a deep source, gradients often being linear in the upper 2m of sediment.Calculated fluxes across the sediment-water interface are of the same order of magnitude as river inputs for the components studied. In the case of Mg2+ and K +, 60–100% of the river input can be balanced by diagenetic uptake in the sediment. For Ca2+ and HCO?3 additions to seawater augment the river supply by 25–50%. When the uptake of Mg2+ and K+ by the sediment is calculated by integrating the fluxes across the interface, calculated concentrations of both of these elements are inconsistent with published average concentrations for the types of sediment studied.  相似文献
