Patterns of habitat utilization and migration of Hudson River striped bass,Morone saxatilis, were estimated using otolith microchemical analysis to chart age- and sex-dependent movements. Otoliths from 25 males and 25 females were analyzed for seasonal and age-specific patterns in strontium: calcium level. These levels were converted into salinity estimates based upon a relationship derived from experimental studies. Seasonal patterns in salinity habitation indicated annual up-estuary migrations in mature age-classes of males and females, and may represent spawning migrations. Early emigration of young striped bass (<3 yr old) into polyhaline and euhaline waters was observed for both sexes, but females tended to reside at higher salinities throughout their life span. Otolith microchemical analysis indicated that 68% of the sampled females and 28% of the sampled males spent significant portions of their lives in euhaline coastal waters. A positive relationship between down-estuary movements and age was observed for both sexes, supporting the hypothesis of size-related dispersion and anadromy in striped bass populations. Individuals collected during the same season or from the same segment of the river had similar lifetime salinities. This result suggests that group cohesion (schooling) could persist for substantial periods of an individual’s life span. The most cohesive group was fall-collected males, which may reside permanently in fresh water and estuarine waters. Cohesive migratory groups would have important implications for investigations on effects of contaminants and fishing pressure on Hudson River striped bass.  相似文献

Although density-dependent growth and mortality are understood to play a large role in regulating populations of some young fish, many investigators report associations between striped bass population fluctuations and environmental variation, not density. One explanation is that mortality is primarily determined by size, which responds through growth to environmental conditions. Mathematically relating mortality to inverse size explains several aspects of striped bass biology. Numerical decline of the 1975 Hudson River cohort is well predicted. Simulated year-class strength responds more strongly to changes in growth and length at hatch than to direct mortality of eggs. The effect of changes in length at hatch and growth, rate on subsequent population size decreases as fish grow. Small changes in temperature or food density early in life could cause the reported association of year-class strength and environmental variation. Disappearance of larvae from an early spawning in the Hudson River in 1976 is attributed to decreasing water temperature, which decreased growth rate. Increased mortality of young striped bass may also result from sublethal exposure to toxicants that decrease growth rate and size at hatch. The approach to modeling population dynamics developed here should be valid for other estuarine and marine species.  相似文献

Persistent inorganic constitutents preserved in sediments of aquatic ecosystems record temporal variability of biogeochemical functioning and anthropogenic impacts.210Pb and137Cs dating techniques were used to study the past variations of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, and Zn) and accumulation rates of sediments for Tivoli South Bay, in the Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve ecosystem. South Bay, a tidal freshwater embayment of the Hudson, may play an important role in the sediment dynamics of this important river. The measured sedimentation rate range of 0.59 to 2.92 cm yr−1 suggests that rapid accumulation occurred during the time period represented by the length of the cores (approximately the past 50 yr). Direct measurements of sediment exchange with the Hudson River reveal high variability in the sediment flux from one tidal cycle to the next. Net exchange does not seem to be adequate to explain sediment accumulation rates in the bay as measured by210Pb and137Cs. The difference may be supplied from upland streams or the Hudson River during storm events. Concentrations of the metals Pb, Cu and Zn were found to be well correlated with each other within individual cores at five of six sites tested. This suggests a common proximate source for the three metals at a specific site. The evidence is consistent with mixing in some environmental compartment before delivery to the bay. While metals self-correlate within individual cores, absolute concentrations, depth distribution patterns, and ratios of the metals to each other vary among the cores collected at different locations within the bay. Organic matter, Fe content, and particle size distribution of sediments do not account for the intercore variations in metal concentration. It is likely that cores collected from different sites may have derived metals from different sources, such as watershed streams and tidal exchange with the Hudson River.  相似文献

Shortnose sturgeon,Acipenser brevirostrum, is a small, endangered species which occurs in 19 estuary systems along the east coast of North America. These populations are considered as separate entities by the U. S. National Marine Fisheries Service although evidence of morphologic or genetic differentiation among populations has not been documented. The purpose of this study was to compare morphological and genetic atributes among shortnose sturgeon collected from the Kennebec and Androscoggin Rivers, Maine, and the Hudson River, New York. Six morphometric and five meristic characteristics were quantified. Multivariate and univariate analyses of covariance and variance were used to assess differences among populations. Our analyses provided evidence for distinct populations in the Androscoggin and Kennebec Rivers, but character differentiation was greater between fish from these two locations and the Hudson River. Analysis of morphometric characters indicated significant differences in fish shape among the three rivers, with Hudson River sturgeon differing from the Maine rivers for the characters of head length, snout length, and mouth width. Significant differences were observed for meristic characters, but pairwise comparisons did not reflect a clear pattern of variability. Sequencing of a portion of the mitochondrial DNA control region revealed 15 haplotypes among 73 total specimens from the three rivers. Shortnose sturgeon from the Kennebec and Androscoggin Rivers were different from each other (p=0.0260); both differed significantly (p<0.0001) from the Hudson River collection. Gene flow was estimated at approximately 7 female migrants per generation between the two Maine populations and about 1 per generation between each of the Maine populations and the Hudson River population. Such strong stock structuring among presumably recently established post-Pleistocene (<10,000 yr) populations suggests that this species occurs in highly discrete units. Morphological and genetic variation observed in this study combined with current knowledge of life history attributes of shortnose sturgeon indicate that conservative management decisions are necessary until the patterns and extent of differentiation among populations species-wide can be investigated further.  相似文献

An assemblage of fossil sockeye salmon was discovered in Pleistocene lake sediments along the South Fork Skokomish River, Olympic Peninsula, Washington. The fossils were abundant near the head of a former glacial lake at 115 m elevation. Large adult salmon are concentrated in a sequence of death assemblages that include individuals with enlarged breeding teeth and worn caudal fins indicating migration, nest digging, and spawning prior to death. The specimens were 4 yr old and 45-70 cm in total length, similar in size to modern sockeye salmon, not landlocked kokanee. The fossils possess most of the characteristics of sockeye salmon, Oncorhynchus nerka, but with several minor traits suggestive of pink salmon, O. gorbuscha. This suggests the degree of divergence of these species at about 1 million yr ago, when geological evidence indicates the salmon were deposited at the head of a proglacial lake impounded by the Salmon Springs advance of the Puget lobe ice sheet. Surficial geology and topography record a complicated history of glacial damming and river diversion that implies incision of the modern gorge of the South Fork Skokomish River after deposition of the fossil-bearing sediments.  相似文献

Large, recreationally or commercially important populations of Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus), American shad (Alosa sapidissima), and striped bass (Morone saxatilis) occur in the Hudson River. Members of the Hudson River populations of these fishes also occur over a broad range along the Atlantic coast where they mix with conspecifics from other anadromous populations. For management purposes, it is imperative to be able to discriminate among individual stocks so that weak stocks may be protected and harvest may be allocated equitably. Because of their sensitivity and resistance to environmentally-induced temporal variation, molecular approaches have been increasingly employed in stock identification studies. However, post-Pleistocene recolonization of the Hudson River must have occurred less than 10,000 years ago—a relatively brief period for genetic divergence among populations. We tested whether various measures of DNA variation between Hudson River populations and adjacent populations of Atlantic sturgeon, American shad, and striped bass were sufficient to discriminate among their conspecific populations. American shad populations surveyed for mtDNA variation were highly diverse genotypically, but genotypic frequencies among the populations of the Connecticut, Hudson, and Delaware rivers were statistically homogenous (p>0.05). In contrast, Atlantic sturgeon (surveyed for mtDNA variation) and striped bass (surveyed for mtDNA and nuclear DNA variation) populations of the Hudson River were not genotypically diverse, but they were differentiated from northern and southern populations. Our results suggest higher gene flow (and lesser homing fidelity) among American shad populations in comparison with the two other species.  相似文献

Ficopomatus enigmaticus, a polychaete inhabiting the subtidal zone in the Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, builds reef-like aggregates that facilitate silt accumulation. To describe the life cycle, samples were take monthly from September 1984 to September 1985. In contrast with other polychaetes, it has two oocyte generations per year; maturation of the oocytes takes approximately 4 mo. Temperature level and day length regime do not appear as environmental signals to the onset of oogenesis, although they possibly affect oogenesis growth. Two periods of spawning and recruitment were observed in November–December and April–May, when water temperature is above 18°C. Hermaphroditic individuals were not found. Sex ratio was male-biased in all months, significantly in November, February, and August (p<0.001). Monthly size-frequency distributions show distinct year-classes with early (November–December) and late (April–May) recruitment. Early recruited cohorts have two spawning periods during a 24-mo lifespan. Late cohorts have one spawning period during their 20-mo lifespan. The life cycle of this species can be summarized as follows: annual iteroparous—1 to 2 batches of small eggs per female during each lifespan, free spawning, planktotrophic larvae, sedentary suspension-feeder worms.  相似文献

Long-trend trends in dissolved oxygen (DO) and total coliform bacteria concentrations are used to evaluate the impact of almost 60 yr of sewage abatement and treatment in the lower Hudson River near New York City. Although some water pollution control plants have been in operation in the region since the 1930s, the most significant abatement of untreated sewage in the lower Hudson River has occurred since the late 1970s, when most of the existing plants were upgraded to secondary treatment, and additional plants were constructed. From at least 1922 through the early 1960s, average summer DO percent saturation varied between 35% and 50% in surface waters and 25% and 40% in bottom waters. Beginning in the late 1970s, DO concentrations generally increased through the 1980s and especially into the 1990s, coinciding with the upgrading of the 7.4 m3 s?1 (170 million gallons per day, mgd) North River plant to secondary treatment in the spring of 1991. Average summer percent saturation in the early 1990s exceeded 80% in surface waters and 60% in bottom waters. In addition, summer DO minima have increased from less than 1.5 mg 1?1 in the early 1970s to greater than 3.0 mg 1?1 in the 1990s, and the duration of hypoxia during summer months has been reduced. Total coliforms also display strong declining trends from the 1970s into the 1990s, with declines attributed to plant upgrades, construction of two New York City plants (North River and Red Hook) in the mid 1980s, and improved operation of the sewer system.  相似文献

Larvae and juveniles are often most abundant at some distance from where spawning occurs. Such apparent distribution shifts can be the result of larval migration, seasonal shifts in the distribution of spawners, or spatial heterogeneity in mortality. In the present study, a cohort-based method was adopted to test for larval migration of bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli) and to estimate its rate and timing. A spatially and temporally extensive series of ichthyoplankton samples was collected in the lowest 122 km of the Hudson River in summer 1998. Bay anchovy eggs and young-of-year individuals were abundant (mean density=1.6 m?3 and 0.95 m?3, respectively). Daily age used to define cohort membership was determined from otoliths. Age and length were strongly related (R2=0.74). The age-length relationship varied over the season such that early-season bay anchovy hatched in June grew more rapidly than later-season anchovy hatched in August. Cohorts were defined as week-long birth-data classes, and net migration patterns of 11 cohorts were analyzed. Mean location shifted upriver as cohorts increased in age to 6 wk, at a net rate of about 0.6 km d?1. Cohort abundance usually decreased over time in downriver regions, but usually increased in upriver regions. The cohort analysis confirmed that the upriver shift in distribution of early-stage anchovy is not entirely due to changes in adult spawning behavior or to clines in larval mortality, and must be partly the result of larval migration.  相似文献

The anadromous acipenserid Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus was listed in 2012 under the U.S. Endangered Species Act as having four endangered and one threatened distinct population segment (DPS) in American waters. Anthropogenic activities outside of natal estuaries, particularly bycatch, may hinder the abilities of some populations to rebuild. Most Atlantic sturgeon are residential for their first 2–6 years within their natal estuaries, whereas older subadults and adults may migrate to non-natal estuaries and coastal locations. Previous studies demonstrated that subadults and adults aggregate during summer at locations in Long Island Sound (LIS) and its tributary, the Connecticut River; however, the population origin of these fish is unknown. Because of its geographic proximity and relatively robust population, we hypothesized that the LIS and Connecticut River aggregations were almost solely derived from the Hudson River. We used microsatellite nuclear DNA analysis at 11 loci and mitochondrial DNA control region sequence analyses to estimate the relative contributions of nine Atlantic sturgeon populations and the five DPS to these aggregations using individual-based assignment tests and mixed-stock analysis. From 64 to 73 % of specimens from LIS were estimated to be of Hudson origin. Similarly, 66–76 % of specimens from the Connecticut River were of Hudson origin. However, moderate numbers of specimens were detected from distant spawning populations in the southeastern DPS and from two populations once thought to be extirpated or nearly so, the James River (6–7.3 %), and the Delaware River (7.6–12 %). Additionally, specimens were detected from all five DPS in both the LIS and Connecticut River collections. These results highlight the difficulty of evaluating the status of individual Atlantic sturgeon populations because of the propensity of subadults and adults to migrate for extended duration to distant sites where they may be vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbances.  相似文献

Tidewater silversides,Menidia peninsulae (Goode and Bean) were maintained in 1.3 m diameter holding tanks in identical laboratory recirculating systems. During two weeks under constant conditions (a current velocity of 8 cm per s and continuous illumination, 24L:0D) there was a low relative frequency of arrhythmic spawning. In the subsequent two-week period, fish in one pair of tanks, were maintained under the singular influence of twice daily interruptions in current velocity (8 to 0 cm per s at 0600–0700 and 1800–1900) with continuous illumination. The relative frequency of spawning remained low and there was no evidence of a daily spawning rhythm. However, the mean number of eggs per spawn increased substantially. Fish in the second holding system were subjected to a diel light cycle of 13L:11D with a constant current velocity of 8 cm per s for two weeks. The relative frequency of spawning remained low, and there was no indication of spawning rhythmicity; moreover, there was only a slight increase in the mean number of eggs per spawn. During the third two-week period, fish in the first pair of tanks were provided a 13L:11D diel light cycle, in conjunction with preexisting twice daily interruptions in current velocity; those in the second pair of tanks were provided twice daily interruptions in current velocity in conjunction with the preexisting 13L:11D light cycle. Under the combined influence of interrupted current velocity and diel light cycle cues, there was a marked increase in the relative frequency of spawning in both pairs of tanks. Fish manifested a discernible spawning periodicity, spawns typically occurred between 1800 and 2400; the mean number of eggs per spawn also increased. When fish were returned to constant conditions, current velocity 8 cm per s and 24L:0D for two weeks, the frequency of spawning decreased and there was no indication of a spawning periodicity. Results of another experiment (interrupted current at 1200 to 1300 and 2400 to 0100 with a 13L:11D light cycle) indicated gradual expression of a tidal spawning rhythm during nighttime, 2400 to 0359. Our laboratory results indicate thatM. peninsulae is predominantly a nocturnal spawner and that spawning coincides with interruptions in current velocities.  相似文献

The northern pipefish,Syngnathus fuscus, is an abundant component of estuarine faunas along the east coast of the United States, yet little is known of its life history. Northern pipefish were collected from several areas in southern New Jersey, particularly the Great Bay-Little Egg Harbor estuarine system, to determine aspects of its reproduction and to estimate its age and growth. A monthly gonadosomatic index for both males and females indicated a spring through summer spawning period, with a peak in reproductive activity during June. A male brood pouch-somatic index indicated a prolonged male brooding period over spring through summer, with a peak in June. The size of males with broods ranged from 119–222 mm total length (TL), and the number of eggs within a brood varied from 45 to 1380. Individual embryos within a brood were identical in development stage, suggesting each brood resulted from a single mating. Young-of-the-year occurred in samples from May through November, with peak abundance in June. Individuals in this year class were extremely variable in size by the end of the first growing season, varying from 5 mm TL to 200 mm TL in November. At approximately 1 yr of age, individuals were 70–220 mm TL and many were of sufficient size to reproduce, indicating that the events of the first year of life for this species are of central importance to an understanding of its population dynamics.  相似文献

The 1977 peak population of spawning horsehoe crabs,Limulus polyphemus, in Delaware Bay, was comprised of about 222,000 males and 51,000 females. This estimate, based upon a shoreline survey of spawning intensity along Delaware and New Jersey beaches at the time of full moon tides in June, was corroborated by a quantification of egg clusters in a beach. Fecundity of gravid females was used, in conjunction with the egg cluster estimate, to approximate the number of females responsible for the observed quantity of eggs. The present spawning population of Delaware Bay is several fold larger than that which existed during the 1960’s. From a longer historical perspective, however, the population is far from approaching the numbers and spawning intensity reported a century ago.  相似文献

The radial-growth patterns of white spruce were studied on a number of trees growing in subarctic dunes along the eastern coast of Hudson Bay to calculate the rates of accumulation, erosion, and migration of cold-climate sand dunes. The average rate of sand accumulation in sheltered dunes (forest sites) was 2.5 to 3.3 cm/yr, which is two to three times lower than in highly exposed dunes with a rate of sedimentation of 7.65 cm/yr. The average erosion rate was 1.4–1.7 cm/yr, about two times lower than the accumulation rate. The migration rate of sheltered dunes was 18 to 30 cm/yr, three to five times lower than for an exposed dune which advanced at a speed of 74 cm/yr. This migration rate established for highly exposed dunes in the Subarctic with tree-ring methods is about 10 times lower than that established for a barchan in the Sahara with other methods.  相似文献

Boreas, 10.1111/j.1502‐3885.2009.00106.x. ISSN 0300‐9483. Fluvial and glacial deposits in New Jersey, Long Island, and the Hudson valley provide a record of Hudson River drainage since the late Miocene. Late Miocene fluvial deposits record southerly flow across the emerged inner New Jersey shelf. In the late Miocene–early Pliocene this drainage incised, shifted southwesterly, and discharged to the shelf south of New Jersey. During late Pliocene or Early Pleistocene glaciation, discharge to the shelf in the New York City area was established. This drainage incised and stabilized in the Early and Middle Pleistocene and remained open during pre‐Wisconsinan (Oxygen Isotope Stage 6? (OIS‐6?)) and late Wisconsinan (OIS‐2) glacial advances. During late Wisconsinan retreat, moraine deposits dammed the valley at the Narrows to form Lake Albany. From 19 to 15.5 kyr BP (all dates in 14C yr), Hudson drainage was directed eastward into the Long Island Sound lowland. Drainage of Lake Wallkill into Lake Albany at 15.5 kyr BP breached the Narrows dam and initiated the unstable phase of Lake Albany, which was controlled by eroding spillways, first on the moraine dam, then on emerged lake‐bottom in the mid‐Hudson valley. Marine incursion between 12 and 11 kyr BP limited fluvial incision of the lake bottom, stabilizing the Quaker Springs, Coveville, and upper Fort Ann spillways. Lowering sea level between 11 and 10 kyr BP allowed incision from the upper to lower Fort Ann threshold. Sediment eroded by lake outflows between 15 and 10.5 kyr BP was trapped in the glacially deepened lower valley. Little inland sediment reached the shelf after 20 kyr BP.  相似文献

Replicate groups of larvae from each of three female grass shrimp,Palaemonetes pugio, collected at each of six sites within Chesapeake Bay were reared in the laboratory to metamorphosis at 25°C, 25 ppt salinity. They were provided with approximately 300Artemia nauplii/larva/day. Sites were selected to provide both suspected Kepone® contaminated and non-contamined shrimp populations. A sample of eggs, adult females with and without eggs, and newly hatched larvae from each site were analyzed by Virginia Institute of Marine Science for Kepone as were postlarvae obtained through laboratory rearings. Females and eggs from the James River had highest concentrations of Kepone (0.63 and 0.47 ppm, respectively) with samples from the Lafayette River at the mouth of the James River having the second highest levels (0.04 and 0.4 ppm). Concentrations in ovigerous females and eggs in the populations most distant from the James (mouth of Potomac and upper Potomac River) were at or below the limits of detectability (0.001 to 0.015 ppm). In laboratory reared postlarvae from each site, concentrations of Kepone were undetectable. Despite these apparent differences in Kepone concentrations in the various populations we found no significant differences in larval survival, larval duration, or length of post-larvae attributable to site of origin. Highly significant differences in larval duration and size of post-larvae were attributable to parental variation.  相似文献

Movements of spawning rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax, were followed in the Parker River estuary, Massachusetts during 1974 and 1975. Fish marked with vinyl subcutaneous tags (n=1,492) or fin clips (n=577) were recaptured on three separate spawning sites in three different tributaries; the distribution patterns of marked fish indicated a homogeneous spawning stock. Interstream movement may have been facilitated by tidal transport since smelt ascended to the spawning sites on flood tides and moved downstream as tides ebbed. Rates of recapture of fish tagged on the spawning areas were 2.61 and 5.61 times greater for males than females in 1974 and 1975 respectively. Individual tagged males were recovered up to four times during the spawning period; females were recaptured a maximum of once. The proportion of age II and older females sampled from the angling fishery prior to spawning in 1975 (47.38%) was greater than the cumulative proportion sampled on the spawning sites (11.93%) due to longer spawning period of individual males.  相似文献

This paper represents the first report of adultG. ginsburgi from Rhode Island waters since 1938. Gobies were collected only from subtidal shell communities in high salinity waters. Seaboard gobies eat a variety of benthic invertebrates but feed most heavily on harpacticoid copepods. Gravid females collected in July contained one size class of ova indicating a single spawning per season. Egg counts ranged from 1268 to 1977 per female. Larval densities indicate that peak spawning occurs in July and suggest thatG. ginsburgi is more abundant in the Sakonnet River and nearby Narragansett Bay than previously reported.  相似文献

The seasonal abundance and spatial distribution of eggs and early larvae of the bay anchovy,Anchoa mitchilli, and the weakfish,Cynoscion regalis, were determined from plankton collections taken during 1971–1976 in the lower Chesapeake Bay. Eggs and larvae of the bay anchovy,Anchoa mitchilli, dominated the ichthyoplankton, making up 96% of the total eggs and 88% of all larvae taken. A comparison of egg and larval densities from the lower Chesapeake Bay to existing data from other East Coast estuaries suggested that Chesapeake Bay is a major center of spawning activity for this species.Anchoa mitchilli spawning commenced in May when mean water column temperatures approached 17°C and abruptly ceased after August. Eggs and early larvae presented a continuous distribution throughout the study area during these months. Eggs and larvae of several sciaenid species, especiallyC. regalis, ranked second in numerical abundance. Larval weakfish were consistently taken in late summer of each sampling year but peak abundance and distribution was observed in August 1971. Sciaenid eggs exhibited a distinct polyhaline distribution with greatest concentrations observed at the Chesapeake Bay entrance or along the Bay eastern margin. Analysis of sciaenid egg morphometry and larval occurrence suggested spawning activity of at least four species. Additional important species represented by eggs and/or larvae in the lower Chesapeake Bay wereHypsoblennius hentzi, Gobiosoma ginsburgi, Trinectes maculatus, Symphurus plagiusa andParalichthys dentatus with the remaining species occurring infrequently.  相似文献

Blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) are an important species in coastal or lagoonal estuaries where adult population characteristics may differ as compared to drowned-river estuaries. Barnegat Bay, in southern New Jersey, is composed of two large embayments: one without and one with a salinity gradient. We tested the influence of physical characteristics on the abundance, sex ratio, and size of adult blue crabs and examined variation in measures of reproductive potential (e.g., sperm stores) in both sexes in Barnegat Bay from June to September, 2008–2009. Population structure was distinct between the embayments due to sex-specific responses to salinity: male abundance was negatively correlated with salinity whereas adult females were more abundant in high salinity because of proximity to Barnegat Inlet. This produced high sex ratios in low salinity areas and low sex ratios in high salinity areas. Summer was a growing season for adult males while in late summer-early fall, juvenile males recruited to the adult size class. The spawning season lasted from May to August and ovigerous females were concentrated near the inlets. Information on female sperm stores and ovarian development identified two cohorts of adult females: females that will spawn in the current summer and females that will not spawn until the following summer. Thus, not all adult females near the spawning grounds were members of the current spawning stock. This suggests that annual estimates of spawning stock size which overlook the proximity of females to spawning are overestimating the current spawning stock in Barnegat Bay and other estuaries.  相似文献
