Measurements of the Hα flux from 30 neighboring dwarf galaxies are presented. After correction for absorption, these fluxes are used to estimate the star formation rate (SFR). The SFR for 18 of the galaxies according to the Hα emission are compared with estimates of the SFR from FUV magnitudes obtained with the GALEX telescope. These are in good agreement over the range log[SFR] = [ −3, 0] M /year.  相似文献

We present kinematics and photometric evidence for the presence of seven candidate tidal dwarf galaxies in Stephan's Quintet. The central regions of the two most probable parent galaxies, NGC 7319 and NGC 7318B, contain little or no gas whereas the intragroup medium and, in particular, the optical tails that seem to be associated with NGC 7318B are rich in cold and ionized gas. Two tidal dwarf candidates may be located at the edge of a tidal tail, another located within a tail, and for the four others there is no obvious stellar/gaseous bridge between them and the parent galaxy. Two of the candidates are associated with H I clouds, one of which is, in addition, associated with a CO cloud. All seven regions have low continuum fluxes and high Hα luminosity densities [F(Hα) = (1-60) × 10-14 ergs s-1 cm-2]. Their magnitudes (MB = –16.1 to –12.6), sizes (∼ 3.5 h75 -1 kpc), colors (typically B – R = 0.7), and gas velocity gradients (∼ 8 –26 h75 km s-1 kpc-1) are typical for tidal dwarf galaxies. In addition, the ratios between their star formation rates determined from Hα and from the B-band luminosity are typical of other tidal dwarf galaxies. The masses of the tidal dwarf galaxies in Stephan's Quintet range from ∼ 2 × 108 to 1010 M, and the median value for their inferred mass-to-light ratios is 7 (M/L). At least two of the systems may survive possible ‘fallbacks’ or disruption by the parent galaxies and may already be, or turn into, self-gravitating dwarf galaxies, new members of the group. The evolution of the Star Formation Rate (SFR) density of the Universe as a function of look-back time is a fundamental parameter in order to understand the formation and evolution of galaxies. The current picture, only outlined in the last years, is that the global SFR density has dropped by about an order of magnitude from a redshift of z∼1.5 to the current value at z=0. Because these SFR density studies are now extended to the whole range in redshift, it becomes mandatory to combine data from different SFR tracers. At low redshifts, optical emission lines are the most widely used. Using Hα as current-SFR tracer, the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) Survey provided the first estimation of the global SFR density in the Local Universe. The Hα flux in emission is directly related to the number of ionizing photons and, modulo IMF, to the total mass of stars formed. Metallic lines like [OII]λ3727 and [OIII]λ5007 are affected by metallicity and excitation. Beyond redshifts z∼0.4, Hα is not observable in the optical and [OII]λ3727 or UV luminosities have to be used. The UCM galaxy sample has been used to obtain a calibration between [OII]λ3727 luminosity and SFR specially suitable for the different types of star-forming galaxies found by deep spectroscopic surveys in redshifts up to z∼1.5. These calibrations, when applied to recent deep redshift surveys confirm the drop of the SFR density of the Universe since z∼1 previously infered in the UV. However, the fundamental parameter that determines galactic evolution is mass, not luminosity. The mass function for local star-forming galaxies is critical for any future comparison with other galaxy populations of different evolutionary status. Hα velocity-widths for UCM galaxies indicate that besides a small fraction of 1010-1011 M starburst nuclei spirals, the majority have dynamical masses in the ∼109 M range. A comparison with published data for faint blue galaxies suggests that star-forming galaxies at z∼1 would have SFR per unit mass and burst strengths similar to those at z=0, but being intrinsically more massive. We use three indicators of massive star formation, Hα, FIR and non-thermal radio luminosities, to compare estimates of the star formation rate (SFR) for a sample of 34 spiral galaxies. To adjust the SFR values obtained from these indicators, we considered the slope, α, and/or the upper mass limit M up of the initial mass function (IMF) as free parameters. The best agreement between the indicators is found for M up≈ 60-100 M⊙ and α ≈–3.1 at the high-mass end of the IMF (M>10 M⊙.Parallelwith the SFR we also estimated the FIR excess X FIR, defined as the fraction of the observed FIR not directly related to young massive stars. X FIR is found to be well correlated with types of spiral galaxies and their colours (B-V): the redder a galaxy, the higher its FIR excess. We conclude that for any parameters of the IMF the observed FIR flux of early-type spiral galaxies needs an additional source of energy apart from massive star radiation. Observations on the 6-m telescope in the Hα line and in the continuum are reported for 10 dwarf companions of the galaxy M31: And I, And II, And III, And V, And IX, And X, Cass dSph, Peg DSph, NGC147, NGC221, and one irregular dwarf galaxy in the background, And IV. All the observed companions of M31 have current star formation rates (SFR) on the order of or less than 10−6 M /yr. On a “star formation rate-neutral hydrogen mass” diagram for galaxies in the local volume, the dwarf spheroidal companions of Andromeda lie in the region of extremely low values for these parameters. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 49, No. 3, pp. 337–350 (August 2006).  相似文献

We analyze the three-dimensional kinematics of about 82 000 Tycho-2 stars belonging to the red giant clump (RGC). First, based on all of the currently available data, we have determined new, most probable components of the residual rotation vector of the optical realization of the ICRS/HIPPARCOS system relative to an inertial frame of reference, (ω x , ω y , ω z ) = (−0.11, 0.24, −0.52) ± (0.14, 0.10, 0.16) mas yr−1. The stellar proper motions in the form μα cos δ have then be corrected by applying the correction ω z = −0.52 mas yr−1. We show that, apart from their involvement in the general Galactic rotation described by the Oort constants A = 15.82 ± 0.21 km s−1 kpc−1 and B = −10.87 ± 0.15 km s−1 kpc−1, the RGC stars have kinematic peculiarities in the Galactic yz plane related to the kinematics of the warped stellar-gaseous Galactic disk. We show that the parameters of the linear Ogorodnikov-Milne model that describe the kinematics of RGC stars in the zx plane do not differ significantly from zero. The situation in the yz plane is different. For example, the component of the solid-body rotation vector of the local solar neighborhood around the Galactic x axis is M 32 = −2.6 ± 0.2 km s−1 kpc−1. Two parameters of the deformation tensor in this plane, namely M 23+ = 1.0 ± 0.2 km s−1 kpc−1 and M 33M 22 = −1.3 ± 0.4 km s−1 kpc−1, also differ significantly from zero. On the whole, the kinematics of the warped stellar-gaseous Galactic disk in the local solar neighborhood can be described as a rotation around the Galactic x axis (close to the line of nodes of this structure) with an angular velocity −3.1 ± 0.5 km s−1 kpc−1 ≤ ΩW ≤ −4.4 ± 0.5 km s−1 kpc−1.  相似文献

The Eridanus galaxies follow the well-known radio—FIR correlation. The majority (70%) of these galaxies have their star formation rates below that of the Milky Way. The galaxies that have a significant excess of radio emission are identified as low luminosity AGNs based on their radio morphologies obtained from the GMRT observations. There are no powerful AGNs (L 20cm > 1023 W Hz−1) in the group. The two most far-infrared and radio luminous galaxies in the group have optical and HI morphologies suggestive of recent tidal interactions. The Eridanus group also has two far-infrared luminous but radio-deficient galaxies. It is believed that these galaxies are observed within a few Myr of the onset of an intense star formation episode after being quiescent for at least a 100 Myr. The upper end of the radio luminosity distribution of the Eridanus galaxies (L 20cm ∼ 1022 W Hz−1) is consistent with that of the field galaxies, other groups, and late-type galaxies in nearby clusters.  相似文献

Based on currently available observations of 28 maser sources in 25 star-forming regions with measured trigonometric parallaxes, proper motions, and radial velocities, we have constructed the rotation curve of the Galaxy. Taking different distances to the Galactic center R 0, we have estimated the peculiar velocity of the Sun, the angular velocity of Galactic rotation, and its three derivatives. For R 0 = 8 kpc, we have found the circular velocity of the Sun to be V 0 = 243 ± 16 km s−1, which corresponds to a revolution period of 202 ± 10 Myr. We have obtained the Oort constants A = 16.9 ± 1.2 km s−1 kpc−1 and B = −13.5 ± 1.4 km s−1 kpc−1. Our simulation of the influence of a spiral density wave has shown that the peculiar velocity of the Sun with respect to the local standard of rest and the component (V )LSR depend significantly on the Sun’s phase in the spiral wave.  相似文献

Based on data for 102 OB3 stars with known proper motions and radial velocities, we have tested the distances derived by Megier et al. from interstellar Ca II spectral lines. The internal reconciliation of the distance scales using the first derivative of the angular velocity of Galactic rotation Ω′0 and the external reconciliation with Humphreys’s distance scale for OB associations refined by Mel’nik and Dambis show that the initial distances should be reduced by ≈20%. Given this correction, the heliocentric distances of these stars lie within the range 0.6–2.6 kpc. A kinematic analysis of these stars at a fixed Galactocentric distance of the Sun, R 0 = 8 kpc, has allowed the following parameters to be determined: (1) the solar peculiar velocity components (u , v , ω ) = (8.9, 10.3, 6.8) ± (0.6, 1.0, 0.4) km s−1; (2) the Galactic rotation parameters Ω0 = −31.5 ± 0.9 km s−1 kpc−1, Ω′0 = +4.49 ± 0.12 km s−1 kpc−2, Ω″0 = −1.05 ± 0.38 km s−1 kpc−3 (the corresponding Oort constants are A = 17.9 ± 0.5 km s−1 kpc−1, B = −13.6 ± 1.0 km s−1 kpc−1 and the circular rotation velocity of the solar neighborhood is |V 0| = 252 ± 14 km s−1); (3) the spiral density wave parameters, namely: the perturbation amplitudes for the radial and azimuthal velocity components, respectively, f R = −12.5±1.1 km s−1 and f ϑ = 2.0 ± 1.6 km s−1; the pitch angle for the two-armed spiral pattern i = −5.3° ± 0.3°, with the wavelength of the spiral density wave at the solar distance being λ = 2.3 ± 0.2 kpc; the Sun’s phase in the spiral wave x = −91° ± 4°.  相似文献

We present the Hα flux measurements for 44 nearby dwarf galaxies, derived from the observations at the 6-m BTA telescope. Hα fluxes were used to determine the rate of integral star formation of galaxies, SFR. For the observed galaxies the value of log SFR lies in the range from 0 to ?8 [M /yr]. The specific star formation rate for all the sample galaxies does not exceed the limit of log SSFR = ?9.2 [yr?1]. A burst of star formation was detected in the center of a nearby dwarf galaxy UGC2172.  相似文献

We discuss observations of the first galaxies, within cosmic reionization, at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths. We present a summary of current observations of the host galaxies of the most distant QSOs (z∼6). These observations reveal the gas, dust, and star formation in the host galaxies on kpc-scales. These data imply an enriched ISM in the QSO host galaxies within 1 Gyr of the big bang, and are consistent with models of coeval supermassive black hole and spheroidal galaxy formation in major mergers at high redshift. Current instruments are limited to studying truly pathologic objects at these redshifts, meaning hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (L FIR ∼1013 L ). ALMA will provide the one to two orders of magnitude improvement in millimeter astronomy required to study normal star forming galaxies (i.e. Ly-α emitters) at z∼6. ALMA will reveal, at sub-kpc spatial resolution, the thermal gas and dust—the fundamental fuel for star formation—in galaxies into cosmic reionization.  相似文献

Based on a new geometric diagnostic method-Om, we consider a new independent-model parametrization . When we work in potential W σ [1+(σA)2]e (−), we investigate the evolutional behavior of Om with respect to red-shift z and the influence of coupling parameter α on the trajectory of Om with respect to z. We get that phantom model of Dilaton dark energy can avoid the future singularity “Big Rip”. The numerical results give current value of EOS which fits the latest observational data WMAP5+BAO+SNe very well.  相似文献

The galaxy NGC6384 has been observed with an IPCS through and [NII] narrow-band interference filters for direct imagery with the 2.6-m Byurakan telescope. We studied the main physical parameters of the identified 98 HII regions, their diameter and luminosity functions, as well the [NII]/ ratio distribution. The integrated distribution function of the HII region diameters can be well fitted by the exponential function. The characteristic diameter has the value (Do = 217 pc) predicted for a galaxy of its measured luminosity. The luminosity function of HII regions has a double power law profile with relatively shallow slope at low luminosities (α = −0.4), an abrupt turnover at logL() ≈ 38.75, and sharper slope at higher luminosities (α = −2.3). The correlation between the luminosity and diameter of HII regions confirms that in general they are constant density, radiation-bound systems. [NII]/ ratio data for the HII regions show that there is a negative radial gradient of [NII]/. In the central region of the galaxy, nitrogen abundance is higher than in the periphery. The properties of the HII region population of this AGN galaxy do not differ significantly from the properties of the HII region population of the “normal” galaxies. Reexamining the location of the type Ia SN 1971L in the galaxy, we confirm that it lies on the spiral arm at about 8″.6 far from the closest HII region N 53 (F81). Such a location can be taken as proof that the progenitor of this SN does not belong to an old, evolved stellar population. We study the nature of faint blue compact galaxies (BCGs) at redshifts z ∼ 0.2 - 1.3 using Keck and HST. Despite being very luminous (LB ∼ L*), most distant BCGs have masses M ∼ 1010M, i.e., they are dwarf stellar systems. The majority of these galaxies have colors, sizes, surface brightnesses, luminosities, velocity widths, excitations, star formation rates (SFR), and mass-to-light ratios characteristic of the most luminous nearby HII galaxies. The more massive BCGs form a more heterogeneous class of evolved starburst, similar to local disk starburst galaxies. Without additional star formation, HII-like BCGs will most likely fade to resemble today's spheroidal galaxies such as NGC 205. We present a deep wide field Hα imaging survey of the central regions of the two nearby clusters of galaxies Coma and Abell 1367, taken with the WFC at the INT 2.5m telescope. We determine for the first time the Schechter parameters of the Hα luminosity function (LF) of cluster galaxies. The Hα LFs of Abell 1367 and Coma are compared with each other. Typical parameters of φ ≈ 100.00±0.07 Mpc-3, L *≈ 1041.25±0.05 erg sec-1 and α ≈ -0.70±0.10 are found for both clusters. Hα luminosities of a sample of galaxies in nearby compactgroups are presented. Our purpose is to study the influence of thegroup environment on the star formation rates (SFRs) of the galaxies in thegroups, provided that the Hα luminosity is a good tracer of theSFR of disc galaxies. Measuring the global L /L B of the groups – including early-type galaxies – we find that the average value of the Hα emission is not significantly different from thatmeasured for field galaxies, and that most of the groups that show thehighest level of L /L B, with respect to a set of synthetic groups built out of field galaxies, show tidal features in at least one of their members. Finally, we have exploredthe relationship between the ratio L /L B and severalrelevant dynamical parameters of the groups (velocity dispersion, crossingtime, radius and mass-to-luminosity ratio) and have found no clearcorrelation. This suggests that the exact dynamical state of a groupdoes not appear to control the SFR of the group as a whole. The influence of the potential well depth US(N)U_{\Sigma}^{(N)} of Σ in nuclear matter on the surface gravitational red-shift of a proto neutron star is examined within the framework of the relativistic mean field theory for the baryon octet system. It is found that as US(N)U_{\Sigma}^{(N)} increases from −35 MeV to +35 MeV, the surface gravitational red-shift increases and the influence of the negative US(N)U_{\Sigma}^{(N)} on the surface gravitational red-shift is larger than that of the positive ones. Furthermore, the M max/R and the surface gravitational red-shift corresponding to the maximum mass all increase as the US(N)U_{\Sigma}^{(N)} increases, M max and R being the maximum mass of the proto neutron star and the corresponding radius respectively.  相似文献

We present two new luminous blue variable (LBV) candidate stars discovered in the M33 galaxy. We identified these stars as massive star candidates at the final stages of evolution, presumably with a notable interstellar extinction. The candidates were selected from the Massey et al. catalog based on the following criteria: emission in H α , V<18./m 5 and 0.m 35 < (B - V) < 1.m 2. The spectra of both stars reveal a broad and strong H α emission with extended wings (770 and 1000 kms−1). Based on the spectra we estimated the main parameters of the stars. Object N45901 has a bolometric luminosity log(L/L) = 6.0–6.2 with the value of interstellar extinction A V = 2.3 ± 0.1. The temperature of the star’s photosphere is estimated as T⋆ ∼ 13000–15000 K, its probable mass on the Zero Age Main Sequence is M∼ 60–80 M. The infrared excess in N 45901 corresponds to the emission of warm dust with the temperature Twarm ∼ 1000 K, and amounts to 0.1%of the bolometric luminosity. A comparison of stellar magnitude estimates from different catalogs points to the probable variability of the object N45901. Bolometric luminosity of the second object, N125093, is log(L/L) = 6.3 − 6.6, the value of interstellar extinction is A V = 2.75 ± 0.15. We estimate its photosphere’s temperature as T⋆∼ 13000–16000K, the initial mass as M ∼ 90–120 M. The infrared excess in N125093 amounts to 5–6% of the bolometric luminosity. Its spectral energy distribution reveals two thermal components with the temperatures Twarm ∼ 1000K and Tcold ∼ 480 K. The [Ca II] λλ7291, 7323 lines, observed in LBV-like stars Var A and N93351 in M33 are also present in the spectrum of N 125093. These lines indicate relatively recent gas eruptions and dust activity linked with them. High bolometric luminosity of these stars and broad H α emissions allow classifying the studied objects as LBV candidates.  相似文献

The morphological and velocity structures in the gaseous (HI and CO) and stellar components of two interacting systems are examined. Both Arp 140 and Arp 104 reveal extended tidal tails in the HI. The Hα and FIR fluxes of Arp 140 yield similar SFR of ∼ 0.8 M yr-1. In contrast the Hα flux of Arp 104 yields a SFR of ∼ 0.05 M yr-1, ∼ 20 times smaller than that obtained from the FIR flux. Spectra were used to examine the changing velocity of atomic and molecular gas in NGC 5218 (Arp 104). The atomic and molecular gas were found to be dynamically similar with comparable velocities and velocity widths across the galaxy; consistent with the two phases responding similarly to the interaction, or enhanced HI to CO conversion in the centre of the galaxy. We analyze the properties of galaxy clusters in the region of the Leo supercluster using observational data from the SDSS and 2MASS catalogs. We have selected 14 galaxy clusters with a total dynamical mass of 1.77 × 1015 M in the supercluster region 130 by 60 Mpc in the plane of the sky (z ≃ 0.037). The composite luminosity function of the supercluster is described by a Schechter function with parameters that, within the error limits, correspond to field galaxies and does not differ from the luminosity function of the richer Ursa Major (UMa) supercluster for the same luminosity range (the bright end). The luminosity functions of early-type and late-type galaxies in Leo at the faint end are characterized by a sharp decrease (α = −0.60±0.08) and a steep increase (α = −1.44± 0.10) in the number of galaxies, respectively. In the virialized cluster regions, the fraction of early-type galaxies selected by the u-r color, bulge contribution, and concentration index among the galaxies brighter than M K * + 1 is, on average, 62%. This fraction is smaller than that in the UMa supercluster at a 2–3σ level. The near-infrared luminosities of galaxy clusters down to a fixed absolute magnitude correlate with their masses almost in the same way as for other samples of galaxy clusters (L 200,K M 2000.63±0.11)).  相似文献
