We report on the first space–VLBI observations of the OH 34.26+0.15 maser in two main-line OH transitions at 1665 and 1667 MHz. The observations involved the space radio telescope on board the Japanese satellite HALCA and an array of ground radio telescopes. The map of the maser region and images of individual maser spots were produced with an angular resolution of 1 mas, which is several times higher than the angular resolution available on the ground. The maser spots were only partly resolved and a lower limit to the brightness temperature     was obtained. The maser seems to be located in the direction of low interstellar scattering, an order of magnitude lower than the scattering of a nearby extragalactic source and pulsar.  相似文献

1 INTRODUCTIONHerbig-Haro objects are a kind of semi-sta]c, semi-nebuIa objects associated with star fOrm-ing regions. Although such objects were noticed by Burnham as early as l890s, they did notattract much attention until the late 1940s until their independent rediscovery by Herbig andHaro in NGC 1999. A few years later, these objects were named Herbig-Haro objects fOr thefirst time by Ambartsumian (Reipurth 1997). In the fOllowing half century, the observationand theoretical res…  相似文献

High brightness temperatures are a characteristic feature of IntraDay Variability (IDV) of extragalactic radio sources. Recent studies of the polarization properties of some IDV sources (e.g., 1150 812, PKS 0405-385 and 0716 714) have shown that these sources harbor several compact IDV components with angular sizes of -10-30/uas and very high polarizations (of up to -50%-70%). These results indicate the possibility of the existence of uniform magnetic fields in the IDV components. We investigate the incoherent synchrotron and self- Compton radiation of an anisotropic distribution of relativistic electrons which spin around the magnetic field lines at small pitch angles. The brightness temperature limit caused by second-order Compton losses is discussed and compared to the brightness temperatures derived from energy equipartition arguments. It is found that anisotropic distributions of electrons moving in ordered magnetic fields can raise the equipartition and Compton brightness temperatures by a factor of up to -3-5. This would remove some of the difficulties in the interpretation of extremely high intrinsic brightness temperatures of > 1012 K (or apparent brightness temperatures of - 1014 K with a Doppler factor of -30).  相似文献

VLBI total intensity and linear polarization images of the BL Lacertae object 0735+178 have been obtained at     using the     VLA as a ground array together with the HALCA orbiting antenna, and at     about a month later using the VLBA. The most surprising result to come from a comparison of these two images, which have nearly equivalent resolution, is that the path of the jet appears to be appreciably different at the two wavelengths. We have interpreted this as evidence for free–free absorption to the east of the core, near a bend of about 90° in the 2-cm image where the emission is very weak in the 6-cm image. Overall, the polarization structures seen in corresponding regions at the two wavelengths are in good agreement. We find tentative evidence for enhanced rotation measures near two sharp bends in the VLBI jet.  相似文献

We have produced 22 VLBI images of the TeV blazar Markarian 421 at 11 epochs, including a Space VLBI observation with the HALCA satellite. We measure the speeds of the three innermost jet components to be 0.64±0.33, 0.48±0.09, and 0.06±0.09c (H0=65 km s−1 Mpc−1). Interpretation of these subluminal speeds in terms of the high Doppler factor demanded by the TeV observations is discussed.  相似文献

We present the results of an Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) survey for intraday variability (IDV) of the total and polarized flux densities of 118 compact, flat-spectrum, extragalactic radio sources from the Parkes 2.7-GHz Survey. A total of 22 total flux density IDV sources were discovered and 15 sources were found to show IDV of their polarized flux density. We discuss the statistical properties of the IDV sources, including the distribution of source modulation indices, and the dependence of the variability amplitude on source spectral index and on Galactic position. We suggest interstellar scintillation (ISS) in the Galactic interstellar medium as the most likely mechanism for IDV. Even so, the inferred high brightness temperatures cannot be easily explained.  相似文献

We present an investigation into the spatial variation of the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) and optical line and continuum emission along the radio axis of the z ∼ 2.6 radio galaxy 0828+193, using long-slit spectra from the Keck II and Subaru telescopes. Line brightnesses, line ratios and electron temperatures are examined, and their relationship with the arm-length asymmetry of the radio source is also investigated. We find that on the side of the nucleus with the shortest radio lobe, the gas covering factor is higher, and the ionization parameter is lower. The contrasts in environmental density required to explain the asymmetries in the line brightness and the radio arm-length asymmetries are in fair agreement with each other. These results add further weight to the conclusion of McCarthy, van Breugel & Kapahi – lobe distance asymmetries in powerful radio sources are the result of an asymmetry in the environmental density.
We also note that the brightness of both the UV and optical continuum emission shows a similar spatial asymmetry to that shown by the line emission. While the UV continuum asymmetry can be wholly explained by the expected asymmetry in the nebular continuum, the optical continuum asymmetry cannot. We argue that, at least at optical wavelengths, the starlight and/or the scattered light must also be strongly spatially asymmetric.  相似文献

We have performed a wide-area ultraviolet (UV) imaging survey using the GALaxy Evolution eXplorer to search for bright, point-like UV sources behind M31's extended halo. Our survey consisted of 46 pointings covering an effective area of ≈50 deg2, in both the far-UV and near-UV channels. We combined these data with optical R -band observations acquired with the WIYN Mosaic-1 imager on the Kitt Peak National Observatory 0.9-m WIYN telescope. An analysis of the brightness and colours of sources matched between our photometric catalogues yielded ≈100 UV-bright quasar candidates. We have obtained discovery spectra for 76 of these targets with the Kast spectrometer on the Lick 3-m telescope and confirmed 30 active galactic nuclei and quasars, 29 galaxies at   z > 0.02  including several early-type systems, 16 Galactic stars (hot main-sequence stars) and one featureless source previously identified as a BL Lac object. Future UV spectroscopy of the brightest targets with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope will enable a systematic search for diffuse gas in the extended halo of M31.  相似文献

When measuring diameters of partially resolved sources like planetary nebulae, H  ii regions or galaxies, often a technique called Gaussian deconvolution is used. This technique yields a Gaussian diameter, which subsequently has to be multiplied by a conversion factor to obtain the true angular diameter of the source. This conversion factor is a function of the FWHM of the beam or point spread function, and also depends on the intrinsic surface brightness distribution of the source.
In this paper, conversion factors are presented for a number of simple geometries: a circular constant surface brightness disc and a spherical constant emissivity shell, using a range of values for the inner radius. Also, more realistic geometries are studied, based on a spherically symmetric photoionization model of a planetary nebula. This enables a study of optical depth effects, a comparison between images in various emission lines, and the use of power-law density distributions. It is found that the conversion factor depends quite critically on the intrinsic surface brightness distribution, which is usually unknown. The uncertainty is particularly large if extended regions of low surface brightness are present in the nebula. In such cases the use of Gaussian or second-moment deconvolution is not recommended.
As an alternative, a new algorithm is presented which allows the determination of the intrinsic FWHM of the source using only the observed surface brightness distribution and the FWHM of the beam. Hence no assumptions concerning the intrinsic surface brightness distribution are needed. Tests show that this implicit deconvolution method works well in realistic conditions, even when the signal-to-noise ratio is low, provided that the beamsize is less than roughly 2/3 of the observed FWHM and the beam profile can be approximated by a Gaussian. A code implementing this algorithm is available.  相似文献

We compare surface brightness and magnetic field surface maps for the K0 dwarf AB Doradus, obtained using two independently developed Zeeman Doppler imaging codes. We find that even the fine structure in the two sets of images shows excellent agreement. Magnetic field maps appear to be less sensitive to line-modelling effects than brightness maps. We argue that these results point to the consistency and reliability of Doppler imaging techniques even when using poorly sampled data sets, provided that the spectra used are of sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio.  相似文献

Microlensing promises to be a powerful tool for studying distant galaxies and quasars. As the data and models improve, there are systematic effects that need to be explored. Quasar continuum and broad-line regions may respond differently to microlensing due to their different sizes; to understand this effect, we study microlensing of finite sources by a mass function of stars. We find that microlensing is insensitive to the slope of the mass function but does depend on the mass range. For negative-parity images, diluting the stellar population with dark matter increases the magnification dispersion for small sources and decreases it for large sources. This implies that the quasar continuum and broad-line regions may experience very different microlensing in negative-parity lensed images. We confirm earlier conclusions that the surface brightness profile and geometry of the source have little effect on microlensing. Finally, we consider non-circular sources. We show that elliptical sources that are aligned with the direction of shear have larger magnification dispersions than sources with perpendicular alignment, an effect that becomes more prominent as the ellipticity increases. Elongated sources can lead to more rapid variability than circular sources, which raises the prospect of using microlensing to probe source shape.  相似文献

We have undertaken a mid-infrared (MIR) search for new planetary nebulae (PNe) using the Spitzer Space Telescope GLIMPSE Galactic plane survey. This has involved searching extant GLIMPSE data products for morphologically appropriate structures, and investigating sources having IRAS colours similar to those of Galactic PNe. We have found 12 sources which have a high probability of being high-extinction PNe, and which possess MIR and IRAS colours, and shell morphologies similar to those of previously identified Galactic nebulae. Calibrated mapping of these structures and profiles in all four of the IRAC bands (3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and  8.0 μm  ) suggests that many (if not all) of the nebulae possess at least two primary structures: an interior high surface brightness shell, corresponding to what is probably the primary ionized zone, and a much weaker halo extending to very much greater distances from the nucleus. These latter regimes are particularly evident at longer MIR wavelengths (5.8 and  8.0 μm  ), and it is probable that they trace the nebular photodissociative regimes, where emission derives from small-grain continua and/or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecular bands. This latter behaviour has also been noted in previous analyses of Galactic PNe.  相似文献

We present a submillimetre continuum survey for accretion discs around seven embedded protostars in the Perseus and Serpens molecular clouds. Observations were made at frequencies between 339 and 357 GHz using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope–Caltech Submillimeter Observatory single-baseline interferometer on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. All the objects in our survey show compact dust emission on scales ≲1 arcsec, assumed to arise in a circumstellar accretion disc. We compare the properties of this compact component with evolutionary indicators, such as the ratio of compact to extended emission, and bolometric temperature. We find that discs of mass ∼0.01 M have formed by the Class 0 stage, and that similar mass discs are observed in Class I and Class II sources. A trend is observed whereby the ratio of compact to extended emission in our sources increases from Class 0 to Class II sources. For three of the objects in the survey, NGC 1333 IRAS2:CR1 and SVS13 in Perseus, and FIRS1 in Serpens, the signal-to-noise ratio is sufficient to allow us to model the brightness distributions with elliptical Gaussian and power-law disc models. The Gaussian fits give semimajor half-power radii of approximately 90 to 140 au, at the assumed distance of 350 pc to the Perseus and Serpens clouds.  相似文献

We present mid-infrared (MIR) photometry for 367 Galactic disc, bulge and Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) planetary nebulae (PNe), determined using data acquired with the Spitzer Space Telescope , and through the Legacy Programs GLIMPSE II (Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-plane Survey Extraordinaire II) and SAGE (Surveying the Agents of the Galaxy's Evolution). This has permitted us to make a comparison between the luminosity functions of bulge and LMC PNe, and between the MIR colours of all three categories of source. It is determined that whilst the  3.6 μm  luminosity functions of the LMC and bulge sources are likely to be closely similar, the [3.6]–[5.8] and [5.8]–[8-0] indices of LMC nebulae are different from those of their disc and bulge counterparts. This may arise because of enhanced  6.2 μm  polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission within the LMC sources, and/or as a result of further, and more radical differences between the spectra of LMC and Galactic PNe. We also determine that the more evolved disc sources listed in the Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg (MASH) catalogues of Parker et al. and Miszalski et al. have similar colours to those of the less evolved (and higher surface brightness) sources in the catalogue of Acker et al., a result which appears at variance with previous studies of these sources.  相似文献

The HELIOS A and B zodiacal light photometers can be used to view comets as they pass the spacecraft. Because the HELIOS spacecraft orbit the Sun on their own, and are generally far from Earth, the spacecraft allow us to view comets from a different perspective than normally available. Comet West (1976VI) passed through perihelion on February 25, 1976. The comet crossed the HELIOS A and B spacecraft zodiacal light photometer fields of view, allowing them to record the brightness, polarization and color of the comet. Data from the U, B and V photometers showed a distinct blueing followed by a slight reddening corresponding to the ion and dust tails, respectively, entering the field of view of each photometer sector. The extent of the tail of Comet West was far greater seen from the HELIOS spacecraft than seen from Earth, even taking into account their generally closer viewing perspective. As Comet West traveled away from the Sun, it was observed in the zodiacal light photometer fields of view at a solar distance of more than 1.4 AU. The zodiacal light photometers also viewed Comet Meier (1978XXI). Comet Meier is far more compact than Comet West, extremely blue and unlike Comet West showed no significant dust tail. The interplanetary medium is observed to a level of the variations in the brightness of the electron-scattering component near Comet West. A brightness bump present in the data before the comet reached some photometer positions can be shown to approximately form a parabolic shape sunward and ahead of the orbital motion of the Comet West nucleus. We presume that this bump is evidence of the position of the cometary atmosphere or an enhancement of the ambient interplanetary medium ahead of the comet motion. The brightness bump in terms of density generally corresponds to a density enhancement of the ambient medium by a few times in the vicinity of the comet. When compared with Comet Halley and couched in terms of the shock stand-off distance, the distance of this brightness increase from the nucleus implies a neutral gas production rate of approximately 2.5 times that of Halley. This is in agreement with the neutral gas production rate measured from Comet West using more direct techniques. Now at Scientific Applications Inc., La Jolla, California, U.S.A.  相似文献

The excess number of blue galaxies at faint magnitudes is a subject of much controversy. Recent Hubble Space Telescope results have revealed a plethora of galaxies with peculiar morphologies tentatively identified as the evolving population. We report the results of optical spectroscopy and near-infrared photometry of a sample of faint HST galaxies from the Medium Deep Survey to ascertain the physical properties of the faint morphological populations. We find four principal results. First, the population of objects classified as 'peculiar' are intrinsically luminous in the optical ( M B  ∼ −19). Secondly these systems tend to be strong sources of [O  II ] line luminosity. Thirdly the optical–infrared colours of the faint population (a) confirm the presence of a population of compact   blue galaxies and (b) show the stellar populations of irregular/peculiar galaxies encompass a wide range in age. Finally a surface-brightness comparison with the local galaxy sample of Frei et al. shows that these objects are not of anomalously low surface brightness, rather we find that all morphological classes have evolved to a higher surface brightness at higher redshifts ( z  > 0.3).  相似文献

We present multi-wavelength radio observations with the Very Large Array, and narrow- and broad-band optical observations with the 2.5-m telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory, of a well-defined sample of high-luminosity Fanaroff–Riley class II radio galaxies and quasars, selected from the Molonglo Reference Catalogue 1-Jy sample. These observations were carried out as part of a programme to investigate the effects of orientation and environment on some of the observed properties of these sources. We examine the dependence of the Liu–Pooley relationship, which shows that radio lobes with flatter radio spectra are less depolarized, on size, identification and redshift, and show that it is significantly stronger for smaller sources, with the strength of the relationship being similar for both radio galaxies and quasars. In addition to Doppler effects, there appear to be intrinsic differences between the lobes on opposite sides. We discuss the asymmetry in brightness and location of the hotspots, and present estimates of the ages and velocities from matched-resolution observations in the L and C bands. Narrow- and broad-band optical images of some of these sources were made to study their environments and correlate with the symmetry parameters. An extended emission-line region is seen in a quasar, and in four of the objects possible companion galaxies are seen close to the radio axis.  相似文献

We present luminosity and surface-brightness distributions of 40 111 galaxies with K -band photometry from the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS), Data Release 3 and optical photometry from Data Release 5 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Various features and limitations of the new UKIDSS data are examined, such as a problem affecting Petrosian magnitudes of extended sources. Selection limits in K - and r -band magnitude, K -band surface brightness and K -band radius are included explicitly in the  1/ V max  estimate of the space density and luminosity function. The bivariate brightness distribution in K -band absolute magnitude and surface brightness is presented and found to display a clear luminosity–surface brightness correlation that flattens at high luminosity and broadens at low luminosity, consistent with similar analyses at optical wavelengths. Best-fitting Schechter function parameters for the K -band luminosity function are found to be   M *− 5 log  h =−23.19 ± 0.04, α=−0.81 ± 0.04  and  φ*= (0.0166 ± 0.0008)  h 3 Mpc−3  , although the Schechter function provides a poor fit to the data at high and low luminosity, while the luminosity density in the K band is found to be   j = (6.305 ± 0.067) × 108 L  h  Mpc−3  . However, we caution that there are various known sources of incompleteness and uncertainty in our results. Using mass-to-light ratios determined from the optical colours, we estimate the stellar mass function, finding good agreement with previous results. Possible improvements are discussed that could be implemented when extending this analysis to the full LAS.  相似文献
