We investigate the growth or decay rate of the fundamental mode of even symmetry in a viscous accretion disc. This mode occurs in eccentric discs and is known to be potentially overstable. We determine the vertical structure of the disc and its modes, treating radiative energy transport in the diffusion approximation. In the limit of very long radial wavelength, an analytical criterion for viscous overstability is obtained, which involves the effective shear and bulk viscosity, the adiabatic exponent, and the opacity law of the disc. This differs from the prediction of a two-dimensional model. On shorter wavelengths (a few times the disc thickness), the criterion for overstability is more difficult to satisfy because of the different vertical structure of the mode. In a low-viscosity disc a third regime of intermediate wavelengths appears, in which the overstability is suppressed as the horizontal velocity perturbations develop significant vertical shear. We suggest that this effect determines the damping rate of eccentricity in protoplanetary discs, for which the long-wavelength analysis is inapplicable and overstability is unlikely to occur on any scale. In thinner accretion discs and in decretion discs around Be stars overstability may occur only on the longest wavelengths, leading to the preferential excitation of global eccentric modes.  相似文献

The non-linear dynamics of a warped accretion disc is investigated in the important case of a thin Keplerian disc with negligible viscosity and self-gravity. A one-dimensional evolutionary equation is formally derived that describes the primary non-linear and dispersive effects on propagating bending waves other than parametric instabilities. It has the form of a derivative non-linear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation with coefficients that are obtained explicitly for a particular model of a disc. The properties of this equation are analysed in some detail and illustrative numerical solutions are presented. The non-linear and dispersive effects both depend on the compressibility of the gas through its adiabatic index Γ. In the physically realistic case Γ < 3, non-linearity does not lead to the steepening of bending waves but instead enhances their linear dispersion. In the opposite case Γ > 3, non-linearity leads to wave steepening and solitary waves are supported. The effects of a small effective viscosity, which may suppress parametric instabilities, are also considered. This analysis may provide a useful point of comparison between theory and numerical simulations of warped accretion discs.  相似文献

We present a linear analysis of the vertical structure and growth of the magnetorotational instability in stratified, weakly ionized accretion discs, such as protostellar and quiescent dwarf novae systems. The method includes the effects of the magnetic coupling, the conductivity regime of the fluid and the strength of the magnetic field, which is initially vertical. The conductivity is treated as a tensor and is assumed to be constant with height.
We obtained solutions for the structure and growth rate of global unstable modes for different conductivity regimes, strengths of the initial magnetic field and coupling between ionized and neutral components of the fluid. The envelopes of short-wavelength perturbations are determined by the action of competing local growth rates at different heights, driven by the vertical stratification of the disc. Ambipolar diffusion perturbations peak consistently higher above the midplane than modes including Hall conductivity. For weak coupling, perturbations including the Hall effect grow faster and act over a more extended cross-section of the disc than those obtained using the ambipolar diffusion approximation.
Finally, we derived an approximate criterion for when Hall diffusion determines the growth of the magnetorotational instability. This is satisfied over a wide range of radii in protostellar discs, reducing the extent of the magnetic 'dead zone'. Even if the magnetic coupling is weak, significant accretion may occur close to the midplane, rather than in the surface regions of weakly ionized discs.  相似文献

We show that radiation-dominated accretion discs are likely to suffer from a 'photon bubble' instability similar to that described by Arons in the context of accretion on to neutron star polar caps. The instability requires a magnetic field for its existence. In an asymptotic regime appropriate to accretion discs, we find that the overstable modes obey the remarkably simple dispersion relation
ο2=−i gkF ( B , k ).
Here g is the vertical gravitational acceleration, B is the magnetic field, and F is a geometric factor of order unity that depends on the relative orientation of the magnetic field and the wavevector. In the non-linear outcome it seems likely that the instability will enhance vertical energy transport and thereby change the structure of the innermost parts of relativistic accretion discs.  相似文献

Transonic discs with accretion rates relevant to intrinsically bright Galactic X-ray sources ( L ≈1038–1039 erg s−1) exhibit a time-dependent cyclic behaviour due to the onset of a thermal instability driven by radiation pressure. In this paper we calculate radiation spectra emitted from thermally unstable discs to provide detailed theoretical predictions for observationally relevant quantities. The emergent spectrum has been obtained by solving self-consistently the vertical structure and radiative transfer in the disc atmosphere. We focus on four particular stages of the disc evolution, the maximal evacuation stage and three intermediate stages during the replenishment phase. The disc is found to undergo rather dramatic spectral changes during the evolution, emitting mainly in the 1–10 keV band during outburst and in the 0.1–1 keV band off-outburst. Local spectra, although different in shape from a blackbody at the disc effective temperature, may be characterized in terms of a hardening factor f . We have found that f is more or less constant, both in radius and in time, with a typical value ∼ 1.65.  相似文献

We present analytic models for the local structure of self-regulated self-gravitating accretion discs that are subject to realistic cooling. Such an approach can be used to predict the secular evolution of self-gravitating discs (which can usefully be compared with future radiation hydrodynamical simulations) and to define various physical regimes as a function of radius and equivalent steady state accretion rate. We show that fragmentation is inevitable, given realistic rates of infall into the disc, once the disc extends to radii >70 au (in the case of a solar mass central object). Owing to the outward redistribution of disc material by gravitational torques, we also predict fragmentation at >70 au even in the case of low angular momentum cores which initially collapse to a much smaller radius. We point out that 70 au is close to the median binary separation and propose that such delayed fragmentation, at the point that the disc expands to >70 au, ensures the creation of low mass ratio companions that can avoid substantial further growth and consequent evolution towards unit mass ratio. We thus propose this as a promising mechanism for producing low mass ratio binaries, which, while abundant observationally, are severely underproduced in hydrodynamical models.  相似文献

Mass loss appears to be a common phenomenon among astrophysical accretion disc systems. An outflow emanating from an accretion disc can act as a sink for mass, angular momentum and energy, and can therefore alter the dissipation rates and effective temperatures across the disc. Here, the radial distributions of dissipation rate and effective temperature across a Keplerian, steady-state, mass-losing accretion disc are derived, using a simple, parametric approach that is sufficiently general to be applicable to many types of dynamical disc–wind models.
Effective temperature distributions for mass-losing accretion discs in cataclysmic variables are shown explicitly, with parameters chosen to describe both radiation-driven and centrifugally driven outflows. For realistic wind mass-loss rates of a few per cent, only centrifugally driven outflows – particularly those in which mass loss is concentrated in the inner disc – are likely to alter the effective temperature distribution of the disc significantly. Accretion discs that drive such outflows could produce spectra and eclipse light curves that are noticeably different from those produced by standard, conservative discs.  相似文献

We discuss a special case of formation of axisymmetric shocks in the accretion flow of ideal gas on to a Schwarzschild black hole: when the total energy of the flow is negative. The result of our analysis enlarges the parameter space for which these steady shocks are exhibited in the accretion of gas rotating around relativistic stellar objects. Since Keplerian discs have negative total energy, we guess that, in this energy range, the production of the shock phenomenon might be easier than in the case of positive energy. So our outcome reinforces the view that sub-Keplerian flows of matter may significantly affect the physics of the high energy radiation emission from black hole candidates. We give a simple procedure to obtain analytically the position of the shocks. The comparison of the analytical results with the data of one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric numerical simulations confirms that the shocks form and are stable.  相似文献

The effects of the Blandford–Znajek (BZ) process on the evolution of the central black holes of accretion discs are investigated by an analytical method and numerical calculations in this paper. It is shown that the BZ process reduces the rates of change of some parameters of the black hole, such as mass, angular momentum, dimensionless angular momentum and temperature, and the evolution of the central black hole towards the extreme Kerr black hole is depressed effectively. However, the rate of change of entropy of the central black hole is augmented in the BZ process. In addition, the consistency of the BZ process with the three laws of black hole thermodynamics is discussed.  相似文献

We use the grid of hydrodynamic accretion disc calculations of Stehle to construct orbital phase‐dependent emission‐line profiles of thin discs carrying spiral density waves. The observational signatures of spiral waves are explored to establish the feasibility of detecting spiral waves in cataclysmic variable discs using prominent emission lines in the visible range of the spectrum. For high Mach number accretion discs ( M v φ c s≃ 15 – 30), we find that the spiral shock arms are so tightly wound that they leave few obvious fingerprints in the emission lines. Only a minor variation of the double peak separation in the line profile at a level of ∼8 per cent is produced. For accretion discs in outburst ( M ≃ 5 – 20) however, the lines are dominated by the emission from an m =2 spiral pattern in the disc. We show that reliable Doppler tomograms of spiral shock patterns can be reconstructed provided that a signal‐to‐noise ratio of at least 15, a wavelength resolution of ∼80 km s−1 and a time resolution of ∼50 spectra per binary orbit are achieved. We confirm that the observed spiral pattern in the disc of IP Pegasi can be reproduced by tidal density waves in the accretion disc and demands the presence of a large, hot disc, at least in the early outburst stages.  相似文献

We consider observational and theoretical estimates of the accretion disc viscosity parameter α. We find that in thin, fully ionized discs, the best observational evidence suggests a typical range α∼ 0.1–0.4, whereas the relevant numerical simulations tend to derive estimates for α which are an order of magnitude smaller. We discuss possible reasons for this apparent discrepancy.  相似文献

We investigate the process of synchrotron radiation from thermal electrons at semirelativistic and relativistic temperatures. We find an analytic expression for the emission coefficient for random magnetic fields with an accuracy significantly higher than those derived previously. We also present analytic approximations to the synchrotron turnover frequency, treat Comptonization of self-absorbed synchrotron radiation, and give simple expressions for the spectral shape and the emitted power. We also consider modifications of the above results by bremsstrahlung.
We then study the importance of Comptonization of thermal synchrotron radiation in compact X-ray sources. We first consider emission from hot accretion flows and active coronae above optically thick accretion discs in black hole binaries and active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We find that for plausible values of the magnetic field strength, this radiative process is negligible in luminous sources, except for those with hardest X-ray spectra and stellar masses. Increasing the black hole mass results in a further reduction of the maximum Eddington ratio from this process. Then, X-ray spectra of intermediate-luminosity sources, e.g. low-luminosity AGNs, can be explained by synchrotron Comptonization only if they come from hot accretion flows, and X-ray spectra of very weak sources are always dominated by bremsstrahlung. On the other hand, synchrotron Comptonization can account for power-law X-ray spectra observed in the low states of sources around weakly magnetized neutron stars.  相似文献

We consider the non-axisymmetric, dynamical instability of a thin accretion torus with a non-zero shift of corotation radius. By numerical method we evaluated the wave number dependence of the linear rate of growth of instability and the co-rotation shift. The rate of growth is only slightly affected by the non-zero co-rotation shift, while the dispersion relation in the case of a shift is the same as that of the linear KdV equation. This shows that the “planet-like” solution found in numerical simulations of thin tori is very probably analogous to the soliton solution of the KdV equation.  相似文献

The stability properties of magnetized discs rotating with angular velocity Ω = Ω( s ,  z ), dependent on both the radial and the vertical coordinates s and z , are considered. Such a rotation law is adequate for many astrophysical discs (e.g., galactic and protoplanetary discs, as well as accretion discs in binaries). In general, the angular velocity depends on height, even in thin accretion discs. A linear stability analysis is performed in the Boussinesq approximation, and the dispersion relation is obtained for short-wavelength perturbations. Any dependence of Ω on z can destabilize the flow. This concerns primarily small-scale perturbations for which the stabilizing effect of buoyancy is strongly suppressed due to the energy exchange with the surrounding plasma. For a weak magnetic field, instability of discs is mainly associated with vertical shear, whilst for an intermediate magnetic field the magnetic shear instability, first considered by Chandrasekhar and Velikhov, is more efficient. This instability is caused by the radial shear which is typically much stronger than the vertical shear. Therefore the growth time for the magnetic shear instability is much shorter than for the vertical shear instability. A relatively strong magnetic field can suppress both these instabilities. The vertical shear instability could be the source of turbulence in protoplanetary discs, where the conductivity is low.  相似文献

The non-linear fluid dynamics of a warped accretion disc was investigated in an earlier paper by developing a theory of fully non-linear bending waves in a thin, viscous disc. That analysis is extended here to take proper account of thermal and radiative effects by solving an energy equation that includes viscous dissipation and radiative transport. The problem is reduced to simple one-dimensional evolutionary equations for mass and angular momentum, expressed in physical units and suitable for direct application. This result constitutes a logical generalization of the alpha theory of Shakura & Sunyaev to the case of a time-dependent warped accretion disc. The local thermal–viscous stability of such a disc is also investigated.  相似文献
