Results of analysis of photoelectric observations of the RS CVn eclipsing binary WY Cancri in the standard passbands ofUBV during 1973-74, 1976-79 and inUBVRI during 1984-86 are reported. A preliminary analysis of the eclipses suggested the primary eclipse to be transit. A study of the percentage contribution of the distortion wave amplitudes in all the colours with respect to the luminosities of both components, showed the hotter component to be the source of the distortion wave. The clean (wave removed) light curves of different epochs have not merged, suggesting residual effects of spot activity. The reason for this is attributed to the presence of either (1) polar spots or (2) small spots uniformly distributed all over the surface of the hotter component. This additional variation is found to have a periodicity of about 50 years or more. The distortion waves in yellow colour are modelled according to Budding’s (1977) method. For getting the best fit of the observations and theory, it was found necessary to assume three or four spots on the surface of the hot component. Out of these four spot groups, three are found to have direct motion with migration periods of 1.01, 1.01 and 2.51 years while the fourth one has a retrograde motion with a migration period of 3.01 years. From these periods and the latitudes of the spots derived from the model a co-rotating latitude of 4ℴ is obtained. The temperatures of these spots are found to be lower than that of the photosphere by about 700ℴK to 800ℴK. Assuming the light curve of 1985-86, which is the brightest of all the observed seasons, to be least affected by the spots, the light curves of the other seasons are all brought up to the quadrature level of this season by applying suitable corrections. The merged curves in theUBVRI colours are analysed for the elements by the Wilson-Devinney method. This analysis yielded the following absolute elements:

U, B, andV observations of AR Lacertae, obtained in 1981, have been presented alongwith the colour indices. A distortion wave minimum is found to lie at 0 . P 21. The amplitude of the wave minimum inV filter is too weak, while it is stronger inU andV filters, the strongest being inV filter. The period of the migration wave turns out to be 2.53 yr.  相似文献

The RS CVn-type eclipsing binary AR Lac has been observed in two colours,B andV, in 1978 and 1979. Several times of minima have been obtained during the observations and the new light elements have been calculated. The orbital period of the system was found to be decreasing with an amount of 14.6 s century–1.The light curves of the system obtained inB andV show a significant wave-like distortion outside eclipses. The amplitudes of the wave-like distortion inB andV are about 0 . m 09 and 0 . m 10 in 1978, and, 0 . m 12 and 0 . m 13 in 1979, respectively. The minima of the wave-like distortion have shifted with an amount of 0 . p 40 in one year, thus indicating the migration period of the wave-like distortion is about 2.5 yr.A noticeable variation of light during the totality of primary minimum has also been observed. This variation can be attributed to the distortion wave which has been moving towards decreasing phases.  相似文献

U, B, andV observations of RZ Eri have been reported. Colours of comparison stars BD-10°994, BD-10°996 and of the variable RZ Eri have been presented. The observations of RZ Eri do not indicate the distortion wave in the light curve beyond observational scatter.  相似文献

The extensiveUBV observations of SV Camelopardalis by Patkos (1982) have been analysed to derive the orbital elements of the system. The data were corrected for the effect of third body (Sarma, Sarma & Abhyankar 1985) and for the ‘RS CVn’ distortion wave (Sarma, Vivekanandarao & Sarma 1988). The cleaned data were used to obtain a preliminary solution by a modified version of Wellmann method (Sarma & Abhyankar 1979) from which we concluded that the primary eclipse is a transit. The final orbital elements of SV Cam were obtained by the modified version (Sarma 1988; Sarmaet al. 1987) of WINK program by Wood (1972). The colour and median brightness variation are discussed. From the spectroscopic mass functionf(m) = 0.118 M (Hiltner 1953), the absolute dimensions of the components are found to be 0.826 Mbd & 0.592 M and 1.236 R & 0.778 R for the primary and secondary components, respectively. The age of the binary system is estimated to be 6.0 ± 1.0 × 108 years  相似文献

We conducted an analysis of the radial evolution of the wave phenomena observed in the inner solar system and associated with the high velocity solar wind stream pattern. The combined interplanetary magnetic field observations performed by Helios-1 and Helios-2 spacecraft allow to draw the following conclusions: (a) The compressive contribution to field fluctuations with periods less than 6 hr is observed to increase with the increasing heliocentric distance and the total variance of the field components decreases appreciably faster than r –3. (b) When compared with theoretical models, Helios observations confirm a better agreement with wave modes which saturate at a constant value of the ratio between the wave energy density and the ambient field energy density.Also at Istituto per il Plasma nello Spazio, CNR, Frascati, Italy.  相似文献

Photoelectric observations of the RS CVn type non-eclipsing binary UX Arietis obtained at Nizamiah Observatory during the observing seasons of 1975–76, 1981–82 and 1982–83 are presented. The light curve of UX Ari showed a distortion wave with an amplitude inV varying from 0.02 mag during 1975–76 to 0.15 mag during 1982–83. An analysis of the available data shows that the light maximum is almost constant. It is also evident that the light-curve minimum decreases as the wave amplitude increases. The constant light at maximum,V = 6.51 ± 0.03 indicates the unspotted photospheric brightness. It is also suggested that the variation in meanV brightness is mainly due to spot activity and not due to intrinsic variation.  相似文献

DifferentialBV photometry of UX Ari obtained on 58 nights during 1984-85, 1985-86, 1986-87, and 1987-88 observing season is presented. We find that (B-V) is phase dependent with the system being reddest at the light maximum and we interpret this as due to the variable fractional contribution by the G5 V component to the total light at shorter wavelengths. An analysis of the available data indicates that at larger amplitudes of the photometric wave the brightness at maximum increases and that at minimum decreases and both converge to δV ≃ −1.0 mag at very low amplitudes. It implies that the low wave amplitudes are essentially due to more homogeneity in the surface distribution of spots rather than due to low levels of spot activity. The variation in wave amplitude is found to be near-sinusoidal with a period around 13–14 years  相似文献

The RS CVn-type eclipsing binary star MM Her has been observed in two colours,B andV, in 1979, 1980, and 1983. Several minima times were obtained during the observations and new light elements calculated. The light curves of the system obtained in blue and yellow lights show a significant wave-like distortion which migrates towards the decreasing orbital phases. Its migration period was estimated to be about 3.5 yr. The amplitudes of the wave-like distortion inB andV appear to change each year. The primary minimum of the system is a total eclipse with a duration of 0d.08.  相似文献

We present the results of a detailed analysis of RXTE observations of classω (Klein-Woltet al. 2002) which show an unusual state transition between high-soft and low-soft states in the Galactic microquasar GRS 1915 + 105. Out of about 600 pointed RXTE observations, the source was found to exhibit such state transition only on 16 occasions. An examination of the RXTE/ASM data in conjunction with the pointed observations reveals that these events appeared as a series of quasi-regular dips in two stretches of long duration (about 20 days during each occasion) when hard X-ray and radio flux were very low. The X-ray light curve and colour-colour diagram of the source during these observations are found to be different from any reported so far. The duration of these dips is found to be of the order of a few tens of seconds with a repetition time of a few hundred seconds. The transition between these dips and non-dips which differ in intensity by a factor of ∼ 3.5, is observed to be very fast (∼ a few seconds). It is observed that the low-frequency narrow QPOs are absent in the power density spectrum (PDS) of the dip and non-dip regions of classω and the PDS is a power law in the 0.1–10 Hz frequency range. There is a remarkable similarity in the spectral and timing properties of the source during the dip and non-dip regions in this set of observations. These properties of the source are distinctly different from those seen in the observations of other classes. This indicates that the basic accretion disk structure during both dip and non-dip regions of classω is similar, but differ only in intensity. To explain these observations, we invoke a model in which the viscosity is very close to critical viscosity and the shock wave is weak or absent.  相似文献

UBV photometry of HR 1099 obtained during the 1979-80 and 1980-81 observing seasons is presented. An analysis of the available data shows that the brightness at the light curve maximum increases as the wave amplitude increases, while the brightness at the light minimum remains almost the same. In terms of the starspot model it implies that there is always a hemisphere of the active component that is nearly ’saturated’ with spots and that spots occupy a larger fraction of the stellar surface when the wave amplitude is smaller. The continuous migration attributed to the photometric wave by various authors is far from certain. The amplitude of the wave has a sharp rise followed by slow decay with a period around 5–6 yr. It is found that the two-spot model proposed by Dorren and Guinan (1982) is inadequate to describe all the observed photometric peculiarities of HR 1099.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to review the observations of particle beams of the kind that are frequently observed in the interplanetary medium, usually but not always accompanying a solar flare. Most frequent are beams of electrons. They are generally associated with radio bursts of type III and only sometimes with flares and X-ray bursts. The properties of these electron beams have been well studied using quasi-linear and nonlinear theory, in situ observations of electrons and of plasma waves, and remote observations of radio waves Thanks to the interaction between theory and observation, the decade of the 1980s has been one of great progress in understanding the main features of these beams and their associated plasma waves and radio bursts. However, uncertainties remain in terms of (1) whether fine scale features, filamentary structures or wave condensations, occur together with the beams, (2) whether quasi-linear or nonlinear wave emission is the dominant process, and (3) if wave condensations are important, what is the mechanism of conversion of some Langmuir wave energy into radio emission.Other particle beams are composed of protons, of neutrons, of helium ions (sometimes with a large excess of 3He), and of heavy ions with varying concentrations. Sometimes the observations seem to require the fractionation of certain ions, followed by resonant acceleration of certain species.Objects other than the Sun that are the source of interplanetary particle beams include comets and planets, especially the Earth and Jupiter.  相似文献

We have made observations of the as sociated HI absorption of a high redshift radio galaxy 0902+34 atz = 3.395 with the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope in the 323 ± 1 MHz band. We find a narrow absorption line with a flux density of 11.5 mJy at a redshift of 3.397 consistent with that observed by Usonet al. (1991), Briggset al. (1993) and de Bruyn (1996). A weak broad absorption feature reported by de Bruyn (1996) has not been detected in our observations. We also place an upper limit of 4mJy(2σ) on emission line strength at the position where Usonet al. (1991) claimed to have found a narrow emission line.  相似文献

Soft X-ray data from the XRP experiment on SMM are used to generate the temperature and density in the flaring region of the 1980, June 29 (18∶21 UT) solar flare. The temporal data (T max ~- 20 × 106 K and n max ~- 4 × 1011 cm?3), together with an assumed velocity, are used to simulate mass injection as the input pulse for the MHD model of Wu et al. (1982a, 1983a). The spatial and temporal coronal response is compared with the ground-based, Mark III K-coronameter observations of the subsequent coronal transient. The simulation produces a spatially-wide, large amplitude, temporarily-steepened MHD wave for either of the two ‘canonical’ magnetic topologies (closed and open), but no shock wave. This result appears to be confirmed by the fact that a type II radio event was observed late in the event for only a few minutes, thereby indicating that a steepening wave with temporary, marginal shock formation, was indeed present. The density enhancements produced by the simulation move away from the Sun at the same velocity observed by the K-coronameter. However, the observation of the coronal transient included a rarefaction that does not appear in the simulation. A probable explanation for this discrepancy is the likelihood that the magnitude and temporal profile of the density of the soft X-ray emitting plasma should not have been used as part of the mass injection pulse. We believe that the temperature profile alone, as suggested by earlier simulations, might have been a necessary and sufficient condition to produce both the compression and rarefaction of the ambient corona as indicated by the K-coronameter data. Hence, the dense plasma observed by XRP was probably confined, for the most part, close to the Sun during the ~ 17 min duration of the observations.  相似文献

Two envelope soliton events below the H + gyrofrequency with localized density depletion were discovered in low auroral region (∼ 1760 km)by Freja satellite. These events were correlated in time with the observations of the ratio of oxygen ion density to hydrogen ion density sharp increase and the electrons energization. These envelope solitons have a characteristic frequency at ∼ 180–190 Hz, which are obviously different from the electron-ion lower hybrid wave frequency and the helium ion gyrofrequency in low auroral plasma, but it is close to the resonancefrequency of hydrogen ion-oxygen ion hybrid wave. A modulational instability model of an ion-ion hybrid wave has been discussed here. It is found that the envelope soliton below the H + gyrofrequency in low auroral region may be generated by this modulational instability on condition that the local oxygen ion density is larger than the local hydrogen ion density. Spectra of the cellular photospheric flows are determined from observations acquired by the MDI instrument on the SOHO spacecraft. Spherical harmonic spectra are obtained from the full-disk observations. Fourier spectra are obtained from the high-resolution observations. The p-mode oscillation signal and instrumental artifacts are reduced by temporal filtering of the Doppler data. The resulting spectra give power (kinetic energy) per wave number for effective spherical harmonic degrees from 1 to over 3000. Significant power is found at all wavenumbers, including the small wavenumbers representative of giant cells. The time evolution of the spectral coefficients indicates that these small wavenumber components rotate at the solar rotation rate and thus represent a component of the photospheric cellular flows. The spectra show distinct peaks representing granules and supergranules but no distinct features at wavenumbers representative of mesogranules or giant cells. The observed cellular patterns and spectra are well represented by a model that includes two distinct modes – granules and supergranules.  相似文献

The COMPTEL unidentified source GRO J 1411-64 was observed by INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton in 2005. The Circinus Galaxy is the only source detected within the 4σ location error of GRO J1411-64, but in here excluded as the possible counterpart. At soft X-rays, 22 reliable and statistically significant sources (likelihood >10) were extracted and analyzed from XMM-Newton data. Only one of these sources, XMMU J141255.6-635932, is spectrally compatible with GRO J1411-64 although the fact the soft X-ray observations do not cover the full extent of the COMPTEL source position uncertainty make an association hard to quantify and thus risky. At the best location of the source, detections at hard X-rays show only upper limits, which, together with MeV results obtained by COMPTEL suggest the existence of a peak in power output located somewhere between 300–700 keV for the so-called low state. Such a spectrum resembles those in blazars or microquasars, and might suggest at work by the models accordingly. However, an analysis using a microquasar model consisting on a magnetized conical jet filled with relativistic electrons, shows that it is hard to comply with all observational constrains. This fact and the non-detection at hard X-rays introduce an a-posteriori question mark upon the physical reality of this source, what is discussed here.  相似文献

Three quiescent prominences were observed in the Ca ii K-line and a fourth one also in the H-line at Oslo Solar Observatory, Harestua, and reduced by Rustad (1974) and by Engvold et al. (1980). These data are used to study the distribution of the line-of-sight velocity component, N(u 0). It is pointed out that in a stationary and isotropic case, N(u 0) should be a gaussian distribution. For each of the sets of measurements gaussians were therefore fitted by a least square procedure. The range in observed velocities varies considerably between the prominences. For the best observed prominence more than 70% of the kinetic energy is in the supersonic range. In the other cases none or only an insignificant part of the observations exceed the velocity of sound. Considerable deviations from gaussian distributions are apparent for the smallest velocities. This distortion shows up conspicuously in the slope of the energy spectrum, a parameter that may be used as a rough measure of spectral resolution.If it is assumed that we have to do with MHD-turbulence as described by Kraichnan (1965), a characteristic relationship should exist between velocity and eddy size. When supersonic velocities are present, compressibility effects may severely alter this relationship. The possibility of observational confirmation is discussed.If a turbulent velocity field is indeed present, the heat conductivity and other transport coefficients may be significantly altered as compared to the atomic values.  相似文献

The images taken by the Heliospheric Imagers (HIs), part of the SECCHI imaging package onboard the pair of STEREO spacecraft, provide information on the radial and latitudinal evolution of the plasma compressed inside corotating interaction regions (CIRs). A plasma density wave imaged by the HI instrument onboard STEREO-B was found to propagate towards STEREO-A, enabling a comparison between simultaneous remote-sensing and in situ observations of its structure to be performed. In situ measurements made by STEREO-A show that the plasma density wave is associated with the passage of a CIR. The magnetic field compressed after the CIR stream interface (SI) is found to have a planar distribution. Minimum variance analysis of the magnetic field vectors shows that the SI is inclined at 54° to the orbital plane of the STEREO-A spacecraft. This inclination of the CIR SI is comparable to the inclination of the associated plasma density wave observed by HI. A small-scale magnetic cloud with a flux rope topology and radial extent of 0.08 AU is also embedded prior to the SI. The pitch-angle distribution of suprathermal electrons measured by the STEREO-A SWEA instrument shows that an open magnetic field topology in the cloud replaced the heliospheric current sheet locally. These observations confirm that HI observes CIRs in difference images when a small-scale transient is caught up in the compression region.  相似文献

The HESS experiment (High Energy Stereoscopic System), consisting of four imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) in Namibia, has observed many extragalactic objects in the search for very high energy (VHE) γ-ray emission. These objects include active galactic nuclei (AGN), notably Blazars, Seyferts, radio galaxies, starburst galaxies and others. Beyond the established sources, γ-ray emission has been detected for the first time from several of these objects by HESS, and their energy spectra and variability characteristics have been measured. Multi-wavelength campaigns, including X-ray satellites, radio telescopes, and optical observations, have been carried out for AGNs, in particular for PKS 2155-304, H 2356-309 and 1ES 1101-232, for which the implications concerning emission models are presented. Also results from the investigations of VHE flux variability from the giant radio galaxy M 87 are shown. For the HESS Collaboration.  相似文献
