Abstract The Permian ophiolite emplaced in the Yakuno area, Kyoto Prefecture, consists of metavolcanic sequences, metagabbro and a troctolitic intrusion. The metavolcanics are associated with thick mudstone through a contact that shows the flowage of lava over unconsolidated mud layers on the sea floor. The metavolcanics and metagabbro have rare earth element (REE) patterns that are similar to enriched (E)‐ and transitional (T)‐types ([La/Yb]N = 0.77–11.2) of mid‐oceanic ridge basalts (MORB), whereas their Nb/La ratios (0.40–1.20) are as low as those of back‐arc basin basalts (BABB). Cr‐spinels in the metavolcanic rocks have Cr? of 40–73 and an Fe3+? of 9–24, numbers which are comparable to the values of BABB. These lines of evidence suggest that the Yakuno ophiolite originated more likely from an early stage back‐arc basin rather than from an oceanic plateau, as has been suggested by some researchers. The troctolitic body that intrudes as a 0.5‐km long lens in the metagabbro is composed of troctolite, olivine gabbro and microgabbro. The troctolite is marked by an olivine–plagioclase crystallization sequence, different from the commonly observed olivine–clinopyroxene sequence in other mafic/ultramafic cumulates of the Yakuno ophiolite. The microgabbro, with a composition close to that of the parental magma of the troctolite, is depleted in light REE ([La/Yb]N = 0.18–0.55) so that it has an REE pattern that mimics normal (N)‐type MORB. The interstitial clinopyroxene of the troctolite has highly variable TiO2 contents (0.2–1.4 wt%), which is interpreted to result from postcumulus crystallization of heterogeneous intercumulus melts. The troctolitic intrusion may represent a late stage intrusion that formed in an off‐ridge environment during sea floor spreading of the back‐arc basin. The geochemical variation observed in the Yakuno ophiolite, ranging from N‐ to E‐MORB affinities, reflects the changes in both mantle source compositions and processes involved in magma generation during the evolution of the back‐arc basin.  相似文献

Many of the Yanshannian intermediate-acid intrusive rocks related to Cu-Au mineralization in the Eastern Yangtze Block are characterized by high Al2O3, Sr contents, while low in Y, Yb contents, thus with high Sr/Y, and La/Yb ratios, and variational isotope signatures in particular, e.g. εNd(t) = ?11.92–1.96, (143Nd/144Nd)i = 0.5120–0.5125, TDM = 0.70–1.71 Ga, (87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.7043 –0.7076. The geochemical characteristics of these rocks suggest that: (1) these rocks are geochemically similar to adakite, which might have been stemmed from the partial melting of thickened basaltic lower crust due to basalt underplating; and (2) the high pressure (1.2–4.0 GPa) and high temperature (850–1150°C) surroundings of the lower crust favor both the fluid and adakite-like magma to generation. Not only can the adakite-like magma carry abundant fluid and Cu-Au ore-froming materials, but also can it bring them to the shallow part with ease and contributes to the Cu-Au mineralization.  相似文献

Numerous summit and parasitic eruptions of moderate potassium magnesian and high-alumina basalts and basaltic andesites, their mineralogic and geochemical features, and the composition of in situ chilled melt inclusions in the olivine of cinder lapilli discharged by Klyuchevskoi Volcano all provide evidence of the presence of magma chambers beneath the volcano. This is also supported by a dualism in the variation of CaO and Al2O3 concentrations in olivine and clinopyroxene during crystallization. The mineralogic features in the high-alumina basalts that were discharged by all parasitic eruptions of Klyuchevskoi provide evidence of magnesian magma being emplaced from a deeper chamber into a shallow high-alumina chamber. The distribution of incoherent elements in the volcano’s magnesian and aluminiferous rocks shows that they came from a single mantle source. The geochemical and mineralogic data are in good agreement with the results of geophysical surveys that concern the structure and properties of the lithosphere beneath Klyuchevskoi.  相似文献

The Oligocene alkaline basalts of Toveireh area (southwest of Jandaq, Central Iran) exhibit northwest–southeast to west–east exposure in northwest of the central‐east Iranian microcontinent (CEIM). These basalts are composed of olivine (Fo70–90), clinopyroxene (diopside, augite), plagioclase (labradorite), spinel, and titanomagnetite as primary minerals and serpentine and zeolite as secondary ones. They are enriched in alkalis, TiO2 and light rare earth elements (La/Yb = 9.64–12.68) and are characterized by enrichment in large ion lithophile elements (Cs, Rb, Ba) and high field strength elements (Nb, Ta). The geochemical features of the rocks suggest that the Toveireh alkaline basalts are derived from a moderate degree partial melting (10–20%) of a previously enriched garnet lherzolite of asthenospheric mantle. Subduction of the CEIM confining oceanic crust from the Triassic to Eocene is the reason of mantle enrichment. The studied basalts contain mafic‐ultramafic and aluminous granulitic xenoliths. The rock‐forming minerals of the mafic‐ultramafic xenoliths are Cr‐free/poor spinel, olivine, Al‐rich pyroxene, and feldspar. The aluminous granulitic xenoliths consist of an assemblage of hercynitic spinel + plagioclase (andesine–labradorite) ± corundum ± sillimanite. They show interstitial texture, which is consistent with granulite facies. They are enriched in high field strength elements (Ti, Nb and Ta), light rare earth elements (La/Yb = 37–193) and exhibit a positive Eu anomaly. These granulitic xenoliths may be Al‐saturated but Si‐undersaturated feldspar bearing restitic materials of the lower crust. The Oligocene Toveireh basaltic magma passed and entrained these xenoliths from the lower crust to the surface.  相似文献

Dredged rocks from an area of about 15 km2 within the inner floor and on the adjacent walls of the Rift Valley were collected. Based on petrographic and chemical data, four types of basaltic rocks were recognized: (1) picritic basalts with olivine xenocrysts, TiO2 < 0.6%, K2O < 0.1%, (2) olivine basalts with olivine megacrysts, TiO2 = 0.8–1.5%,K2O = 0.1–0.2%, (3) highly phyric and moderately phyric plagioclase basalts with megacrystic plagioclase, TiO2 < 1.3%, K2O < 0.3%, and (4) pyroxene basalts with pyroxene > plagioclase, TiO2 = 0.8–1%,K2O = 0.2–0.4%. The Cr and Ni having high partition coefficients show different variation trends for each type of rock and their values decrease continuously as crystallization proceeds within each type of basalt. It is speculated that two different magmas have given rise to the above-mentioned rocks. One has yielded the picritic basalts and subsequently the olivine basalts after a separation of the olivine cumulates; the other gave rise to the plagioclase basalts.  相似文献

Whole‐rock geochemical and Sr–Nd isotopic data are presented for late Miocene volcanic rocks associated with the Chah Zard epithermal Au–Ag deposit in the Urumieh‐Dokhtar Magmatic Arc (UDMA), Iran, to investigate the magma source, petrogenesis and the geodynamic evolution of the study area. The Chah Zard andesitic to rhyolitic volcanic rocks are characterized by significant Large Ion Lithophile Element (LILE) and Light Rare Earth Element (LREE) enrichment coupled with High Field Strength Element (HFSE) depletion. Our geochemical data indicate an adakitic‐like signature for the volcanic rocks (e.g. SiO2 > 62 wt%, Al2O3 > 15 wt%, MgO < 1.5 wt%, Sr/Y > 70, La/Yb > 35, Yb < 1 ppm, and Y < 18 ppm, and no significant Eu anomalies), distinguishing them from the other volcanic rocks of the UDMA. The Chah Zard volcanic rocks have similar Sr and Nd isotopic compositions; the 87Sr/86Sr(i) ratios range from 0.704 902 to 0.705 093 and the εNd(i) values are from +2.33 to +2.70. However, the rhyolite porphyry represents the final stage of magmatism in the area and has a relatively high 87Sr/86Sr ratio (0.705 811). Our data suggest that the andesitic magmas are from a heterogeneous source and likely to result from partial melting of a metasomatized mantle wedge associated with a mixture of subducted oceanic crust and sediment. These melts subsequently underwent fractional crystallization along with minor amounts of crustal assimilation. Our study is consistent with the model that the volcanic host rocks to epithermal gold mineralization in the UDMA are genetically related to late Miocene Neo‐Tethyan slab break‐off beneath Central Iran.  相似文献

The textures of chondrules have been reproduced by crystallizing melts of three different compositions at 1 atm with cooling rates ranging from 400 to 20°C/min under 10?9 to 10?12 atmPO2. A porphyritic olivine texture has been formed from a melt of olivine-rich composition (SiO2 = 45 wt.%), a barred-olivine texture from melt of intermediate composition (SiO2 = 47 wt.%), and radial-olivine texture from melt of pyroxene-rich composition (SiO2 = 57 wt.%). The cooling rate for producing barred olivine is most restricted; the rate ranges from 120 to 50°C/min. Other textures can be formed with wider ranges of cooling rate. The results of the experiments indicate that some of the major types of textures of chondrules can be formed with cooling rate of about 100°C/min. With this cooling rate, the texture varies depending on the composition of melt.  相似文献

For any given volcanic field the compositions of primary melts provide important constraints on models of magmatic processes and volcanic eruptions. In this paper, based on petrography, olivine and bulk rock compositions, two tholeiitic picrites (samples C122 and C123) from Haleakala Volcano, east Maui are evaluated as possible primary melts. Sample C122 (bulk rock MgO = 16.6%) has a high apparent Mg-Fe exchange coefficient, KD, between olivine phenocrysts and bulk rock (0.6). However, major-elements and Ni mass-balance calculations show that the olivines in C122 are in equilibrium with the residual melt (matrix) after closed-system equilibrium fractionation of 25 wt.% olivine. Therefore, the Mg/Fe ratio, Ca content, and Ni content of C122 are consistent with the hypothesis that the bulk composition of C122 is close to a primary melt formed by partial melting of a mantle containing olivine with composition around Fo89 to Fo91. The uniform composition and small size (mostly 0.2–0.3 mm) of the olivine, and the glass patches in the matrix suggest fast ascent, and rapid cooling at shallow depth for C122. On the contrary, sample C123, which has an apparent KD (between the most mafic olivine megacrysts and the bulk rock) close to the equilibrium value (0.27), the multiple planar subgrain boundaries in most of the olivine crystals indicate that it may not be a primary melt unless the deformed olivines are generated at magmatic condition as phenocrysts. If the deformed subgrain boundary texture in olivine could indeed be generated at magmatic condition, then the wide compositional range of olivine crystals in C123 (Fo74 to Fo91) suggests multi-stage crystallization over a wide range of cooling temperatures. The compositions of the two picrites, and a differentiated basalt which does not contain xenocrysts suggest that the Haleakala tholeiites are derived from primary melts with at least 16–17 wt.% MgO. Lavas with such high MgO content are rare in Haleakala and other Hawaiian volcanoes; therefore, most Hawaiian tholeiites must have undergone extensive fractionation histories.  相似文献

This paper reports geochemical and Pb-Sr-Nd isotopic compositions of the Indosinian Yangba (215 Ma),Nanyili (225 Ma) and Mopi granitoids from the Bikou block of the northwestern margin of the Yangtze plate. These granitoids are enriched in Al (Al2O3:14.56%―16.48%) and Sr (352 μg/g―1047 μg/g),and depleted in Y (<16 μg/g) and HREE (e.g. Yb<1.61 μg/g),resulting in high Sr/Y (36.3―150) and (La/Yb)N (7.8―36.3) ratios and strongly fractionationed REE patterns. The Indosinian granotoids show initial Sr isotopic ratios (ISr) from 0.70419 to 70752,εNd(t) values from-3.1 to -8.5,and initial Pb isotopic ratios 206Pb/204Pb=17.891-18.250,207Pb/204Pb=15.494-15.575,and 208Pb/204Pb=37.788-38.335. Their geochemi-cal signatures indicate that the granitoids are adakitic. However, they are distinct from some adakites, generated by partial melting of subducted oceanic slab and/or underplated basaltic lower crust,be-cause they have high K (K2O: 1.49%―3.84%) and evolved Nd isotopic compositions, with older Nd iso-topic model ages (TDM=1.06―1.83 Ga). Geochemical and Sr-Nd isotopic compositions suggest that the magmas of the Insoninian adakitic rocks in the Bikou block were derived from partial melting of thick-ened basaltic lower crust. Combined with regional analyses,a lithospheric delamination model after collision between the North China and South China plates can account for the Indosinian adakitic magma generation. On the other hand, based on the Pb-Sr-Nd isotopic probing to the magma sources of the adakitic rocks,it is suggested that there is an unexposed continent-type basement under the exposed Bikou Group volcanic rocks. This can constrain on the Bikou Group volcanic rocks not to be MORB-or OIB-type.  相似文献

Adakitic rocks in continental settings are commonly considered to be formed by partial melting of thickened or delaminated lower crust. Investigations on this kind of rocks can provide important information about crustal evolution complementary to information from other rocks. This paper reports adakitic granodiorite of the Lingxi pluton in the interior of the Cathayisa Block. LA-ICP-MS zircon U-Pb dating shows that it was formed in the late Early Cretaceous(100±1 Ma). The granodiorite has geochemical features of adakitic rocks derived from partial melting of the thickened lower crust, e.g., high SiO2(mainly ranging from 64.4 to 68.9 wt.%) and Sr(624–894 ppm) contents, Sr/Y(49.9–60.8) and La/Yb(23.4–42.8) values, low Y(10.3–17.1 ppm), Ni(5.62–11.8 ppm) and MgO(mostly from 0.86 wt.% to 1.57 wt.%) contents and weak Eu anomaly. It has initial 87Sr/86 Sr ratios of 0.7086–0.7091, εNd(t) values of.6.2 to.5.9 and zircon εHf(t) values mostly of.10.1 to.7.6. Based on the geochemical characteristics and simple modelling, it is suggested that the most likely generation mechanism of the Lingxi granodiorite is partial melting of a thickened Proterozoic lower continental crust at a pressure ≥12 kbar(or crust thickness ≥40km), leaving a garnet-bearing amphibolite residue. Combining our results and previous studies of the tectonic evolution of the Cathaysia Block, we propose that the crust was thickened to over 40 km by a compressive event occurring during the late Early Cretaceous, which is supported by the observation that there is an angular unconformity between the Upper Cretaceous Series and the early Lower Cretaceous or the Jurassic rocks. After this event, the Cathaysia Block experienced a lithospheric extension and thinning probably driven by the high-angle paleo-Pacific subduction. With the attenuation of lithosphere, the lower crust was heated to partial melting by upwelling asthenospheric materials, resulting in generation of the Lingxi granodiorite and other coeval granitoids in the Cathaysia Block. This study provides new information on the crustal evolution of the Cathaysia Block during the Early Cretaceous.  相似文献

The Yixian Formation at Sihetun in western Liao- ning Province has attracted considerable attention over the last two decades due to discovery of a wide range of well-preserved ‘feathered’ dinosaurs and primitive bird fossils[1―4]. This formation is dominated by vol- canic rocks, with fossil-bearing lacustrine sedimentary rocks at the upper part of the section[4]. The sedimen- tary rocks contain thin layers of tuff. Abstract Triassic granitoids related to Palaeo- and Neo-Tethyan events occur widely in the metamorphic terranes largely affected by the Alpine orogeny. A first recorded unmetamorphosed plutonic body intruded into the Palaeotethyan mélange in western Turkey, called the Karaburun granodiorite, is composed of two small intrusive stocks that were emplaced between 240 and 220 Ma. It is compositionally diverse, ranging from granodiorite and tonalite to diorite. These rocks show heterogeneous compositions with 54 to 65 wt % SiO2 and are calc-alkaline in character. They are also subalkaline with molar ratios of Al2O3/(Na2O + K2O) from 0.74 to 1.00 and are metaluminous. Most samples are diopside-normative (0.36–8.64), with Na2O > K2O. Chondrite normalized rare earth element (REE) patterns show various degrees of light REE (LREE) enrichment, with La N = 57.79 to 99.59 and (La/Yb) N = 5.98–7.85 and Eu negative anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.62–0.86). These rocks have coherent patterns in ocean ridge granite (ORG) normalized trace-element plots, marked by variable enrichment in K, Rb, Ba, Th, Ce and depletion in Ta and Nb, similar to I-type granites from subduction zones. In primitive mantle-normalized multi element variation diagrams, the granodiorites show pronounced depletions in the high-field-strength elements (HFSE; Nb, Ta, Zr), Sr, P, and Ti. Trace-element modeling of the Karaburun granodiorite suggests an origin through partial melting of the subduction-modified mantle wedge with minor contribution of crustal components through a process of strong fractional crystallization (FC) combined with slight assimilation-fractional crystallization (AFC). Exposures of typical continental-arc granodiorites in the Karaburun Mélange support the validity of the subduction-accretion model that implies the presence of an active continental margin following closure of the Palaeotethyan Ocean during the Triassic.  相似文献

Petrography and geochemistry(major, trace and rare earth elements) of clastic rocks from the Late Palaeozoic Madzaringwe Formation, in the Tshipise-Pafuri Basin, Northern South Africa, have been investigated to understand their provenance. Sandstone petrography and detrital modes indicates that the Late Palaeozoic succession was derived from craton interior and recycled orogen provenance. Sandstones in the Madzaringwe Formation are sub-arkosic to sub-litharenite. The sediments may represent a recycled to craton interior provenance. The geochemical data of major elements show that sandstone and shales have the same source. The study of paleoweathering conditions based on modal composition, chemical index of alteration(CIA) and A-CN-K(Al2O3-Ca O+Na2O-K2O) relationships indicate that probably chemical weathering in the source area and recycling processes have been more important in shale and sandstone rocks. The relatively high CIA values(70–90%) indicates moderate to high weathering conditions of the samples and the paleoclimate of the source area was warm. K2O/Na2 O versus Si O2 and Na2O-Ca O-K2 O tectonic setting discrimination plots, suggest a passive continental margin. In the study of trace elements, triangular Th-Sc-Zr/10 and La-Th-Sc plots both suggest a passive margin setting of the basin. Petrographic and geochemical results of the samples suggest uplifted basement source areas dominated by sedimentary rocks and/or granite-gneiss rocks. The source rocks might have been the recycled pre-Soutpansberg Karoo Supergroup rocks and the metasedimentary rocks of the Soutpansberg Group. Other source rocks may have been the pre-Beit-Bridge basement rocks(granites and gneisses).  相似文献

Abstract Early Cretaceous high‐K calc‐alkaline volcanism occurring in the Laiyang Basin north of the Sulu high‐pressure to ultrahigh‐pressure (HP‐UHP) Metamorphic Belt, eastern China, comprises a wide spectrum of rock types, ranging from trachybasalts to trachydacites. The basaltic–andesitic rocks erupted at 107–105 Ma, spanning an SiO2 range of 50.1–59.6% and an MgO range of 2.6–7.2%, and are characterized by large ion lithophile element (LILE; e.g. Ba and K) and light rare earth element (LREE) enrichment, high field strength element (HFSE) depletion and highly radiogenic Sr but non‐radiogenic Nd isotopic compositions (87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.70750–0.70931; ?Nd(t) = ?17.9 ? ?15.6). The geochemical similarities between these rocks and the earlier Sulu Belt lamprophyres suggest that both types of mafic rocks were derived from similar mantle sources with LILE and LREE enrichment. Thus, the Wulian–Qingdao–Yantai Fault that separates the two terranes at the surface should not be considered as a lithospheric boundary between the North China and Yangtze blocks. The felsic lavas erupted at 93–91 Ma, spanning an SiO2 range of 61.6–67.0% and an MgO range of 1.1–2.6%, and show a trace element geochemistry similar to the basaltic rocks, but with higher radiogenic Sr and even lower Nd isotopic compositions (87Sr/86Sr(i) = 0.70957–0.71109; ?Nd(t) = ?19.1 ? ?17.5), similar to I‐type granitoids in the Sulu Belt. A crustal origin was proposed to explain their compositions (which are comparable to those of experimental slab melts), the >10 Ma eruption interval and the compositional gaps in some elements (e.g. P, Ti and Sr) between them and the older basaltic–andesitic rocks. These melts were derived from predominant metaigneous protoliths containing mafic accumulative counterparts of the basaltic–andesitic and/or lamprophyric magmas. The extensive extrusion of Early Cretaceous high‐K calc‐alkaline rocks in the Laiyang Basin favored an extensional regime in response to the progressive attenuation of the thickened lithosphere and orogenic collapse, as reflected in the development of the basin from a foreland basin (before the end of the Jurassic period) to a fault basin (since the Early Cretaceous period).  相似文献

Cenozoic capping volcanic rocks in the Nevada portion of the Basin and Range Province of the western United States belong to the high alumina calcalkaline igneous series. Varying proportions of plagioclase (An=85 to 45 percent), pyroxene (augite, pigeonite, and hypersthene), olivine, magnetite, biotite, and oxyhornblende indicate a modal range from olivine basalt to andesite. Major element analyses made on randomly collected samples, as well as on samples from systematically measured stratigraphic sections in localities of minimum erosion show ranges in Al2O3 (from 17.5 to 22.5 percent); SiO2 (from 44.0 to 54.0 percent); MgO (from 3.47 to 8.20 percent) and CaO (from 7.19 to 11.90 percent). Na2O/K2O is always greater than 1.0. Ba++ and Sr++ abundances for some of the rocks are in agreement with those suggested, by workers in the field, for average basalt and andesite derived by melting of mantle or lower crust, but for many of the samples the values found are considerably higher. Although the presence of biotite in the earlier flows and oxyhornblende in the later ones along with the presence of much magnetite in all the rocks examined suggests that in part these rocks were derived by crystallization of a melt under conditions of high partial pressure of oxygen, the available trace element data indicates that contamination of the magma with crustal material was also a factor in their developmental history. The case for a parent magma, subsequently fractionally crystallized and contaminated in part, is strengthened by the occurrence of crystal cumulates and highly altered xenoliths in some of the flows.  相似文献

The quaternary Rockeskyllerkopf Volcanic Complex (RVC) comprises three spatially and temporally distinct volcanic centers that can also be distinguished on the basis of their geochemical signatures. All the volcanic products in the complex are olivine basanites whose major and trace element compositions span almost the entire range defined for the West Eifel field as a whole. The RVC lavas have lower Al2O3, Na2O and Y contents and higher TiO2, CaO, K2O, Sc, V, Co, Rb, and Ba than the Tertiary lavas in nearby Hocheifel volcanic field. Within the complex, the oldest South East Lammersdorf Center (SEL) comprises primitive lavas with an average MgO content of ~11 wt.% and LaN/YbN of 29?±?2. The second center, Mäuseberg, has similar MgO to SEL but is distinct in its much higher LaN/YbN of 42?±?2. The Rockeskyllerkopf Center, which was erupted after a break in activity, comprises lavas similar in composition to the SEL Center but with distinctly higher Al2O3 and lower MgO contents. Given the lack of evidence for significant fractionation or assimilation in the RVC lavas, we attribute the compositional variations within and between the centers of the RVC to be due to variations in the composition of the source region in combination with magma mixing. Our preferred model involves 1–5% partial melting of LREE-enriched mantle in the garnet stability field, likely within the thermal boundary layer at the base of the lithospheric mantle. These melts mixed to variable degrees with 2–4% partial melts of phlogopite-spinel peridotite formed at higher levels in the modally metasomatised lithospheric mantle.  相似文献

A study of the elasticity of the solidus of igneous rocks provides a means of evaluating several high temperature mechanical characteristics of the zone that forms the transition region between solid rock and rock with a small fraction of partial melt — that is, the magma reservoirenvelope. This type of study has been performed for Hawaiian olivine tholeiite, by employing the theoretical treatment ofWalsh (1969). The effective aggregate bulk modulus (K*), aggregate rigidity (μ*), aggregate Young’s modulus (E*) and the aggregate Poisson’s ratio (n*) have been used to characterize the range in elastic behavior expected for this partially molten envelope. The details of mineralogy, mineral crystal chemistry and microstructure for a tholeiitic basalt from a deep-ponded flow unit (the Boiling Pots), as well as the geometry of melt pocket aspect ratios have been used to provide a basis for computing the elasticity for a shallow reservoir solidus. For a broad range in modal mineralogy, the internal 0–1% melt represents a transition region from an aggregate elasticity controlled by mineral composition, to an elastic behavior dominated by the melt phase (evaluated at a melt pocket aspect ratio ofε=0.001). For vesicular rocks in a low pressure environment, the internal 0–1% melt represents a transition from porosity-controlled elasticity to melt-controlled elasticity, evaluated at a prevalent aspect ratio ofε=0.001, and over the porosity range Φ=0.0?0.20 (20%). Thin melt films found to separate plagioclase microlites (0.0001=ε) are capable of effecting a 94.7% reduction in Young’s modulus, E*, over the 0–1% melt range, and suggest that the reservoir envelope may be critically weakened by rather small volume fractions of liquid, if dispersed in such narrow packets.  相似文献

Results of a paleomagnetic study carried out on the exposed volcanic rocks on the western side of the South Kenya Rift Valley are presented. Nine stratigraphic groups ranging in age from Miocene to Pleistocene were sampled. The rocks consist of basalts, trachytes, nephelinites, melanephelinites, olivine melanephelinites and ignimbrites. Paleomagnetic poles obtained for different age ranges are as follows: Period I (0.64–0.72 Ma), 116°E, 85°N (A95 = 6°); Period II (1.6–6.9 Ma), 297°E, 84°N (A95 = 4°); Period III (12.0–15.0 Ma), 34°E, 80°N (A95 = 9°). The results for Period II show large secular variations which are in disagreement with the model predictions for near-equatorial sites.  相似文献

The petrography and major and trace element concentrations of the sandstones from the Tumengela Formation in the Woruo Mountain area, North Qiangtang Basin, are studied to determine their provenance, intensity of weathering and tectonic setting. The detrital compositions of the Tumengela sandstone samples are dominated by quartz (58.0–70.1 %, average 64.7 %) and lithic fragments (21.8–35.9 %, average 27.3 %), but low in feldspar content (4.9–12.9 %, average 8.0 %). The sandstones can be classified as litharenite and feldspathic litharenite according to their detrital compositions, which is consistent with the geochemical data. The detrital modal compositions reflect that these sandstones are probably derived from a recycled orogenic source. The index of chemical variability (ICV) and SiO2/Al2O3 ratio values suggest that the compositional maturity and recycling were moderate. The weathering indices such as the chemical index of alteration (CIA), plagioclase index of alteration (PIA), chemical index of weathering (CIW), and Al2O3–(CaO* + Na2O)–K2O (A–CN–K) diagram indicate that the intensities of weathering in the source area were moderate. The Al2O3/TiO2, Th/Co, La/Sc, La/Co, Th/Sc, Cr/Th ratio values and the discriminant function of the Tumengela sandstones indicate that the sediments were mainly derived from felsic source rocks, while also mixed with intermediate source rocks. The comparison of rare earth element patterns and its Eu anomalies to the probable source rocks infer that the sandstones were derived from the combination of granite, rhyolite, dacite, and gneisses. The proximal central uplift belt was probably the primary provenance area as evidenced by the petrographical and geochemical features of the Tumengela sandstones. The multidimensional tectonic discrimination diagram based on major elements show a collision setting (80 %) combined with a rift setting (20 %) for the Tumengela sandstones, which is consistent with the general geology of the study areas.  相似文献
