We have determined the atomic hydrogen column density N HI toward all of the young stars from the Taurus-Auriga-Perseus star-forming complex for which the corresponding spectra are available in the Hubble Space Telescope archive (nine stars) by analyzing the Lyα line profile. We show that the stars studied, except DR Tau, lie not far from the edge of the gaseous cloud of the star-forming region closest to us or, more precisely, inside the outer H I shell of the cloud. This shell with a column density of N HI ? 6 × 1020 cm?2 surrounds the molecular gas of the cloud composed of a diffuse component (the so-called diffuse screen) in which dense, compact TMC-1 cores are embedded. The properties of the dust grains toward the stars that lie at the front edge of the cloud most likely differ only slightly from those of the interstellar dust outside star-forming regions. This casts doubt on the validity of the hypothesis that the extinction curve toward young stars has an anomalously low amplitude of the 2175 Å bump—such an extinction curve is observed for the field stars HD 29647 and HD 283809 toward which the line of sight passes through the TMC-1 core.  相似文献

In order to investigate the differences between the molecular clouds which are associated with the massive star forming regions and those which are not, we have performed the single-dish simultaneous observations of 12CO J=2-1 and J=3-2 lines toward a sample of 59 Spitzer Extended Green Objects (EGOs) as the massive star forming regions in the northern sky. Combining our results with the data of the 12CO J=1-0 observations toward the same sample EGOs in the literature, we have made the statistical comparisons on the intensities and linewidths of multiple 12CO lines between the molecular clouds associated with EGOs (EGO molecular clouds, in brief) and other non-EGO molecular clouds. On this basis, we have discussed the effects of the gas temperature, density, and velocity field distributions on the statistical characteristics of the two kinds of molecular clouds. It is found that both the EGO molecular clouds and non-EGO molecular clouds have similar mass ranges, hence we conclude that for the formation of massive stars, the key-important factor is probably not the total mass of a giant molecular cloud (GMC), but the volume filling factor of the molecular clumps in the GMC (or the compression extent of the molecular gas in the cloud).  相似文献

It is generally accepted that the lifetime of molecular clouds does not exceed 3×107 yr due to disruption by stellar feedback. We put together some arguments giving evidence that a substantial fraction of molecular clouds (primarily in the outer regions of a disc) may avoid destruction process for at least 108 yr or even longer. A molecular cloud can live long if massive stars are rare or absent. Massive stars capable to destroy a cloud may not form for a long time if a cloud is low massive, or stellar initial mass function is top-light, or if there is a delay of the beginning of active star formation. A long duration of the inactive phase of clouds may be reconciled with the low amount of the observed starless giant molecular clouds if to propose that they were preceded by slowly contraction phase of the magnetized dark gas, non-detected in CO-lines.  相似文献

We report mapping observations of a 35 pc × 35 pc region covering the Sgr B2 molecular cloud complex in the 13CO (3-2) and the CS (7-6) lines using the ASTE 10 m telescope with high angular resolution. The central region was mapped also in the C18O (3-2) line. The images not only reproduce the characteristic structures noted in the preceding millimeter observations, but also highlight the interface of the molecular clouds with a large velocity jump of a few tens of km s−1. These new results further support the scenario that a cloud–cloud collision has triggered the formation of massive cloud cores, which form massive stars of Sgr B2. Prospects of exciting science enabled by ALMA are discussed in relation to these observations.  相似文献

This is a study of the compact nebulae cn1 and cn2 situated in the extended, bright nebula S235. 12CO observations reveal the presence of blue and red outflows (i.e., a bipolar outflow) from the molecular cloud in which these nebulae are embedded. cn1 and cn2 are shown to be coupled to IR clusters of young stars, some of which have dust disks or envelopes (these are so-called young stellar objects, YSOs), with the YSOs grouped around the center of the clusters. cn1 is coupled to the infrared point source IRAS05377 + 3548, whose IR colors are close to those of T Tau stars. A chain of objects emerging from S235 (which clearly implies they are coupled in terms of evolution) is studied. These are the compact nebulae S235 A, B, and C, and the Herbig-Haro objects GGD5 and GGD6. A group of IR stars associated with GGD6 is also studied.  相似文献

The infrared star cluster RCW 38 IR Cluster, which is also a massive star-forming region, is investigated. The results of observations with the SEST (Cerro La Silla, Chile) telescope on the 2.6-mm 12CO spectral line and with SIMBA on the 1.2-mm continuum are given. The 12CO observations revealed the existence of several molecular clouds, two of which (clouds 1 and 2) are connected with the object RCW 38 IR Cluster. Cloud 1 is a massive cloud, which has a depression in which the investigated object is embedded. It is not excluded that the depression was formed by the wind and/or emission from the young bright stars belonging to the star cluster. Rotation of cloud 2, around the axis having SE-NW direction, with an angular velocity ω = 4.6 · 10−14 s−1 is also found. A red-shifted outflow with velocity ∼+5.6 km/s, in the SE direction and perpendicular to the elongation of cloud 2 has also been found. The investigated cluster is associated with an IR point source IRAS 08573-4718, which has IR colors typical for a non-evolved embedded (in the cloud) stellar object. The cluster is also connected with a water maser. The SIMBA image shows the existence of a central bright condensation, coinciding with the cluster itself, and two extensions. One of these extensions (the one with SW-NE direction) coincides, both in place and shape, with cloud 2, so that the possibility that this extension might also be rotating like cloud 2 is not excluded. In the vicinity of these extensions there are condensations resembling HH objects. Published in Astrofizika, Vol. 51, No. 1, pp. 29–40 (February 2008).  相似文献

Recent studies of the star formation region BBW 36 and associated molecular clouds are presented. The 12CO (1-0) observations, carried out with the 15-m SEST (Swedish-ESO) telescope (Cerro La Silla, Chile), revealed the existence of cloud a, connected with BBW 36 and of cloud b, having elongation in SE-NW direction. A red-shifted molecular outflow with velocity ∼+5 km/s (with respect to cloud a), having a direction parallel to the line of sight, was also observed. VLA observations showed the presence of a source VLA 2 at 3.6 cm with an elongation in the N-S direction. It is suggested that the VLA 2 source coincides with a dust disc (surrounding the object BBW 36). The star 3, which is one of the YSOs in the star-forming region BBW 36 and is connected with a bright comma-like nebula, can be the source of the molecular outflow. The star 3 has very high IR colors and is associated with an IRAS point source IRAS 07280-1829, which has IR colors, typical for an IRAS point source, connected with a water maser. On the 2MASS K image of BBW 36 we can see the existence of a bright nebula; a group of stars is embedded in that nebula, and among these stars there are stars with dust discs (or envelopes). On the 2MASS K image several spiral jets are also present, some of them with a condensation at the end. Published in Astrofizika, Vol. 51, No. 3, pp. 469–477 (August 2008).  相似文献

We consider four possible scenarios relating the proto-solar cloud to the “last-minute” supernova presumed responsible for the isotopic anomalies in Allende and other meteorites. The probability that a chance supernova occurred close enough to an already-collapsing proto-solar cloud to inject sufficient matter is extremely small, even if the Sun formed in a region of enhanced supernova activity such as Orion OB1. The ambient level of 26Al inside a molecular cloud in Orion is also apparently too low to account for the meteorite data, unless the supernova ejecta accumulates at the edges of the cloud and star formation occurs there preferentially. Two modes of supernova-induced star formation are discussed. In one, the supernova shock collapses a preexisting cloud; in the other, stars form within the snowplow shell of the supernova. Canis Major R1 and Monoceros R1 are possible present-day examples of such star formation regions.  相似文献

Abstract— Carbon stars are an important source of presolar TiC, SiC, and graphite grains found in meteorites. The elemental abundances in the stellar sources of the SiC grains are inferred by using condensation calculations. These elemental abundances, together with C isotopic compositions, are used to identify possible groups of carbon stars that may have contributed SiC grains to the presolar dust cloud. The most likely parent stars of meteoritic SiC mainstream grains are N-type carbon stars and evolved subgiant CH stars. Both have s-process element abundances higher than solar and 10 < 12C/13C < 100 ratios. The J stars and giant CH stars, with solar and greater than solar abundances of s-process elements, respectively, are good candidate parents for the ‘A’ and ‘B’ SiC grains with low 12C/13C ratios. A special subgroup of CH giant stars with very large 12C/13C ratios could have parented the ‘Y’ SiC grains with 12C/13C ratios > 100. The carbon star population (e.g., N, R, J, CH groups) needed to provide the observed SiC grains is compared to the current population of carbon stars. This comparison suggests that low-metallicity CH stars may have been more abundant in the past (>4.5 Ga ago) than at present. This suggestion is also supported by condensation-chemistry modeling of the trace element patterns in the SiC grains that shows that subsolar Fe abundances may be required in the stellar sources for many SiC grains. The results of this study suggest that presolar SiC grains in meteorites can provide information about carbon stars during galactic evolution.  相似文献

The stellar field centred close to theh and Per double cluster is one of the 123 fields recorded in the galactic plane at 2000 Å by the balloon-borne stratospheric gondola of the SCAP-2000 programme. The analysis of the frame allows us to determine an ultraviolet colour indexU 1-V for more than 600 stars. Among these are stars belonging to theh and Per and Tr 2 clusters and to the PER OB1 association. The prevailing extinction law is found to produce greater extinction at 1965 Å than predicted by the mean extinction law. Moreover, the clouds responsible for the extinction are situated in the local arm and distributed in two layers with a very transparent interval. The comparison of theA v extinction and theHI and CO abundances leads us to assume the presence of a H2 cloud in front ofh and Per, in the second absorbing layer and, therefore, in the local arm. The two absorbing layers and the molecular cloud are perhaps in the plane of the Gould belt and associated with the expanding gas detected by Lindblad. A group of hot stars centred at the same distance as this molecular cloud has been detected and could form an association of OB stars in the local arm. Other, much more distant OB stars belonging to the Perseus arm of Efremov's list. Several stars which must have a very hot companion are detected in the field.  相似文献

Accretion models of planet formation and the early cratering history of the solar system suggest that planet formation is accompanied by a cloud of debris resulting from accumulation and fragmentation. A rough estimate of the infrared luminosities of debris clouds is presented for comparison with measured 10-μm luminosities of young stars. New measurements of 13 F, G, and K main-sequence stars of the Ursa Major Stream, which is thought to be about 2.7 x 108 years old, place constraints on the amount of debris which could be present near these stars.  相似文献

The Ophiuchus molecular cloud complex has produced in Lynds 1688 the richest known embedded cluster within ∼300 pc of the Sun. Unfortunately, distance estimates to the Oph complex vary by nearly ∼40% (∼120–165 pc). Here I calculate a new independent distance estimate of 135±8 pc to this benchmark star‐forming region based on Hipparcos trigonometric parallaxes to stars illuminating reflection nebulosity in close proximity to Lynds 1688. Combining this value with recent distance estimates from reddening studies suggests a consensus distance of 139±6 pc (4% error), situating it within ∼11 pc of the centroid of the ∼5 Myr old Upper Sco OB subgroup of Sco OB2 (145 pc). The velocity vectors for Oph and Upper Sco are statistically indistinguishable within ∼1 km s–1 in each vector component. Both Oph and Upper Sco have negligible motion (<1 km s–1) in the Galactic vertical direction with respect to the Local Standard of Rest, which is inconsistent with the young stellar groups having formed via the high velocity cloud impact scenario. Abstract— A wide range of stellar nucleosynthetic sources has been analyzed to derive their contributions of short‐lived and stable nuclei to the presolar cloud. This detailed study is required to infer the most plausible source(s) of short‐lived nuclei through a critical comparison among the various stellar sources that include AGB stars, novae, supernovae II, Ia, and Wolf‐Rayet stars that evolved to supernovae Ib/c. In order to produce the canonical value of 26Al/27Al in the early solar system, almost all stellar sources except low‐mass AGB stars imply large isotopic anomalies in Ca‐Al‐rich inclusions (CAIs). This is contrary to the observed isotopic compositions of CAIs. The discrepancy could impose stringent constraints on the formation and thermal evolution of CAIs from different chondrites. Among the various stellar scenarios, the injection of short‐lived nuclei into the previously formed solar protoplanetary disc by a massive star of an ad hoc chosen high‐injection mass cut is a possible scenario. There is a possibility of the contribution of short‐lived nuclides by a 1.5–3 M AGB star as it implies the smallest shift in stable isotopes. A low‐mass AGB star of relatively low metallicity would be even a better source of short‐lived nuclei. However, this scenario would require independent gravitational collapse of the presolar cloud coupled with ambipolar diffusion of magnetic flux. Alternatively, numerous scenarios can be postulated that involve distant (≥10 pc) massive stars can contribute 60Fe to the presolar cloud and can trigger its gravitational collapse. These scenarios would require production of 26Al and 41Ca by irradiation in the early solar system. Significant production of 26Al and 60Fe can be explained if massive, rotating Wolf‐Rayet stars that evolved to supernovae Ib/c were involved.  相似文献

We consider how the tidal potential of a stellar cluster or a dense molecular cloud affects the fragmentation of gravitationally unstable molecular cloud cores. We find that molecular cloud cores which would collapse to form a single star in the absence of tidal shear, can be forced to fragment if they are subjected to tides. This may enhance the frequency of binaries in star-forming regions such as Ophiuchus and the frequency of binaries with separations ≲100 au in the Orion Trapezium Cluster. We also find that clouds which collapse to form binary systems in the absence of a tidal potential will form bound binary systems if exposed to weak tidal shear. However, if the tidal shear is sufficiently strong, even though the cloud still collapses to form two fragments, the fragments are pulled apart while they are forming by the tidal shear and two single stars are formed. This sets an upper limit for the separation of binaries that form near dense molecular clouds or in stellar clusters.  相似文献

The distribution of proper motions of stars in the Pup-CMa association is presented. The stars' velocities are approximately parallel to each other, which indicates that the stars are close together in space. The mutual distribution of stars and molecular clouds in the association is interpreted as proof that the stars emerged from a single gigantic primordial molecular cloud (or several large clouds), destroyed by radiation and/or stellar wind coming from those stars. It is assumed that part of that cloud is being dissipated, while part is being broken into several small clouds, which we are observing at present.  相似文献

This work deals with a CCD imaging study at optical and near‐infrared wavelength oftwo giant molecular clouds (plus a control field) in the southern region of the Large Magellanic Cloud, one ofwhich shows multiple signs of star formation, whereas the other does not. The observational data from VLT FORS2 (R band) and NTT SOFI (Ks band) have been analyzed to derive luminosity functions and color‐magnitude diagrams. The young stellar content of these two giant molecular clouds is compared and confirmed to be different, in the sense that the apparently “starless” cloud has so far formed only low‐luminosity, low‐mass stars (fainter than mKs ∽ 16.5 mag, not seen by 2MASS), while the other cloud has formed both faint low‐mass and luminous high‐mass stars. The surface density excess oflow‐luminosity stars (∽2 per square arcmin) in the “starless” cloud with respect to the control field is about 20% whereas the excess is about a factor of 3 in the known star‐forming cloud. The difference may be explained theoretically by the gravo‐turbulent evolution of giant molecular clouds, one being younger and less centrally concentrated than the other (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We have studied the long-time dynamical evolution of a population of comets surrounding the Solar System at a large distance. Orbital changes are caused by random passing stars. We first emphasize the need for a new simulation because of the lack of completeness of previous analytical and numerical studies. Then the solar neighborhood is modeled by a sphere of 1 pc in radius, which stars cross at random in direction and distance. The geometry of the encounters allows us to compute the impulse gained by the star and the Sun, in the context of an impact approximation. Then we determine the change of orbital elements for a population of comets and follow the evolution of the frequency distribution for the five Keplerian elements. Clouds are selected in such a way that we test the two main hypotheses for the origin of the Oort cloud, and also the regions of stability in an aphelion-eccentricity diagram. We show that stellar perturbations randomize the cloud and prevent one from inferring the initial cloud configuration from the current distribution. Clouds are depleted by the diffusion of comets into the planetary regions, where they become planet-influenced comets or are ejected from the Solar System. The diffusion of aphelion toward interstellar regions proves to be the major source of cometary loss. Direct ejection to hyperbolic orbits amounts to 9% of the originally population over the age of the Solar System. Finally the current and original cloud populations are estimated at 1.8 × 1012 and 2 × 1013 comets and we discuss these results.  相似文献

Linear kinetic theory is developed to describe collective oscillations (and their instabilities) propagating in a rapidly rotating disk of stars, representing a highly flattened galaxy. The analysis is carried out for the special case of a self-gravitating, infinitesimally thin, and spatially inhomogeneous system, taking into account the effects both of thermal movements of stars and of gravitational encounters between stars and giant molecular clouds of an interstellar medium. The star–cloud encounters are described with the use of the Landau collision integral. The dynamics of gravity perturbations with rare interparticle encounters is considered. Such a disk is treated by employing the well elaborated mathematical formalisms from plasma perturbation theory using normal-mode analysis. In particular, the method of solving the Boltzmann equation is applied by integration along paths, neglecting the influence of star–cloud encounters on the distribution of stars in the zeroth-order approximation. We are especially interested in important kinetic effects due to wave–star resonances, which we have little knowledge about. The kinetic effects are introduced via a minor drift motion of stars which is computed from the equations of stellar motion in an unperturbed central force field of a galaxy. The dispersion laws for two main branches of disk's oscillations, that is the classical Jeans branch and an additional gradient branch, are deduced. The resonant Landau-type instabilities of hydrodynamically stable Jeans and gradient gravity perturbations is considered to be a long-term generating mechanism for propagating density waves, thereby leading to spiral-like and/or ring-like patterns in the flat galaxies. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The space velocities and Galactic orbital elements of stars calculated from the currently available high-accuracy observations in our compiled catalog of spectroscopic magnesium abundances in dwarfs and subgiants in the solar neighborhood are used to identify thick-disk objects. We analyze the relations between chemical, spatial, and kinematic parameters of F–G stars in the identified subsystem. The relative magnesium abundances in thick-disk stars are shown to lie within the range 0.0 < [Mg/Fe] < 0.5 and to decrease with increasingmetallicity starting from [Fe/H] ≈ ?1.0. This is interpreted as evidence for a longer duration of the star formation process in the thick disk. We have found vertical gradients in metallicity (gradZ[Fe/H] = ?0.13 ± 0.04 kpc?1) and relative magnesium abundance (gradZ[Mg/Fe] = 0.06 ± 0.02 kpc?1), which can be present in the subsystem only in the case of its formation in a slowly collapsing protogalaxy. However, the gradients in the thick disk disappear if the stars whose orbits lie in the Galactic plane, but have high eccentricities and low azimuthal space velocities atypical of the thin-disk stars are excluded from the sample. The large spread in relative magnesium abundance (?0.3 < [Mg/Fe] < 0.5) in the stars of the metal-poor “tail” of the thick disk, which constitute ≈8% of the subsystem, can be explained in terms of their formation inside isolated interstellar clouds that interacted weakly with the matter of a single protogalactic cloud. We have found a statistically significant negative radial gradient in relative magnesium abundance in the thick disk (gradR[Mg/Fe] = ?0.03 ± 0.01 kpc? 1) instead of the expected positive gradient. The smaller perigalactic orbital radii and the higher eccentricities for magnesium-richer stars, which, among other stars, are currently located in a small volume of the Galactic space near the Sun, are assumed to be responsible for the gradient inversion. A similar, but statistically less significant inversion is also observed in the subsystem for the radial metallicity gradient.  相似文献
