The stability of a self-gravitating streaming fluid cylinder acting upon the electromagnetic force ambient with a tenuous medium of negligible inertia but pervaded by a transverse varying fields, has been developed. The stability criterion is derived, discussed analytically and the results are verified numerically. The cylinder is purely self-gravitating unstable in small axisymmetric domain and stable in all the rest states. modes while the transverse field exterior the cylinder is stabilizing or destabilizing according to restrictions in the asymmetric modes and purely destabilizing in the symmetric one. The streaming has a strong destabilizing influence and that influence is independent of the kind of the perturbation and wavelengths. Both the streaming and the electromagnetic influences increase the gravitational axisymmetric unstable domain and shrink those of stability in the axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric perturbations. Moreover, the stabilizing character of the Lorentz force of some states, is physicaly interpreted, will not be able to suppress the gravitational instability because the gravitational instability of sufficiently long waves will persist.  相似文献

The magnetohydrodynamic stability of a streaming liquid cylinder subject to surface tension and pervaded by a magnetic vacuum field has been elaborated for all axisymmetric and non-axisymmetric disturbances. The dispersion relation is obtained and studied analytically and numerically. the streaming has always a destabilizing effect. The axial magnetic fields inside and outside the jet have always stabilizing effects for all perturbations. The transverse magnetic field has a destabilizing effect. However, if the axial field intensity is so high and paramount over that the transverse field, the destabilizing character of the model is suppressed. The latter is satisfied if the Alfvén wave velocity is greater than the equilibrium liquid velocity.  相似文献

The magnetodynamic (in)stability of a conducting fluid cylinder subject to the capillarity and electromagnetic forces has been developed. The cylinder is pervaded by a uniform magnetic field but embedded in the Lundquist force-free varying field that allows for flowing a current surrounding the fluid. A general eigenvalue relation is derived based on a study of the equilibrium and perturbed states. The stability criterion is discussed analytically in general terms. The surface tension is destabilizing for small axisymmetric mode and stable for all others. The principle of the exchange of stability is allowed for the present problem due to the non-uniform behaviour of the force-free field. Each of the axial and transverse force-free fields separately exerts a stabilizing influence in the most dangerous mode but the combined contribution of them is strongly destabilizing. Whether the model is acted upon the electromagnetic force (with the Lundquist field) the stability restrictions or/and the capillarity force are identified.Several reported works can be recovered as limiting cases with appropriate simplifications.  相似文献

The fundamental equations are formulated using cylindrical polar coordinates and then solved in the unperturbed state. The perturbation equations are determined, simplified, integrated and the constants of integrations are identified by applying appropriate boundary conditions across the perturbed fluid interface. A cumbersome stability criterion for MHD inviscid compressible self-gravitating streaming fluid cylinder is derived. The magnetic field is stabilizing, the streaming is destabilizing while both of the self-gravitating and compressibility are stabilizing or not according to restrictions and that the gravitational instability of sufficiently long waves will persist. Several approximations are required to obtain Chandrasekhar's and Fermi's dispersion relation (Chandrasekhar and Fermi, 1953).  相似文献

The stability of a compressible fluid cylinder pervaded by a longitudinal uniform magnetic field-ambient with a bounded conducting medium of negligible inertia penetrated with general varying vacuum magnetic fields has been developed. The stability criterion describing the stability characteristics of that model is derived and discussed analytically in general terms. The axial fields have always stabilizing influences. The azimuthal vacuum field has a destabilizing effect, however, it becomes minimal if the perturbed and the unperturbed vacuum fields are not orthogonal. The magnetodynamic instability of the fluid jet is modified in the presence of the fluid compressibility. The stabilizing influence due to the latter may be realized more clearly on utilizing the numerical methods for investigating the eigenvalue relation.Several reported works can be recovered as limiting cases with appropriate simplifications.  相似文献

The gravitational instability of an incompressible, infinitely conducting plasma layer of finite thickness surrounded a non-conducting matter has been investigated taking into account the effect of the finite Larmor radius. The magnetic field is assumed to be directed parallel to the interfaces. Only the perturbations transverse to the magnetic field are considered, though both the symmetric and asymmetric nature of the perturbations are taken into account. Using the normal mode technique, dispersion relations are obtained. It is found that the finite larmor radius has, in general, a stabilizing influence on the configuration. Even when the system is thoroughly unstable, it has been shown that there exists a critical value of the wave-number, such that the motion is stabilized for wave-numbers of perturbations exceeding this critical value.  相似文献

The problem of surface wave propagation on a magnetised cylindrical plasma is investigated allowing for different axial magnetic fields inside and outside the flux tube. Properties of surface waves for symmetric and asymmetric modes of perturbations are investigated idealising the material inside and outside the cylinder to be insulator or infinitely conducting both in compressible and incompressible approximations for the tube material.  相似文献

The dynamic stability of a partially ionized, compressible Hall plasma of finite electrical conductivity has been investigated when the plasma is immersed in a uniform, horizontal magnetic field. Based on the variational principle, which is shown to characterize the problem, the solution has been obtained for a semi-infinite plasma confined between two planes and having an exponential density stratification along the vertical. It is found that the effect of neutral gas friction is stabilizing while magnetic resistivity, Hall currents and compressibility all have destabilizing influence. On leave of absence from Department of Mathematics, University of Jodhpur, Jodhpur, India.  相似文献

The paper investigates the effects of thermal conductivity and non-uniform magnetic field on the gravitational instability of a non-uniformly rotating infinitely extending axisymmetric cylinder in a homogeneous heat conducting medium. The non-uniform rotation and magnetic field are supposed to act along θ and z directions of the cylinder. It is found that the gravitational instability of this general problem is determined by the same criterion as obtained by Dhiman and Dadwal (Astrophys. Space Sci. 325(2):195–200, 2010) for the self-gravitating isothermal medium in the presence of non-uniform rotation and magnetic field with the only difference that adiabatic sound velocity is now replaced by the isothermal sound velocity. It is found that the thermal conductivity has stabilizing effect on the onset of gravitational instability. Further, the stabilizing/destabilizing effect of the non-uniform magnetic field on the gravitational instability of heat conducting medium has been discussed and is illustrated by considering some special forms of the basic magnetic fields.  相似文献

Thermal instability of a compressible rotating plasma in the presence of a uniform vertical magnetic field is studied to include the effects of finiteness of the ion-Larmor radius. When the instability sets in as stationary convection, the compressibility is found to have stabilizing effect. It is found that finite Larmor radius effects are always stabilizing forx greater than two and forx less than two they have a destabilizing influence in the presence of rotation. The stabilizing effect of coriolis force is observed and for the case of no rotation, finite Larmor radius effects are always stabilizing. The sufficient conditions for the nonexistence of overstability are investigated.  相似文献

The effect of a non-uniform magnetic field on the gravitational instability for a non-uniformly rotating, infinitely extending axisymmetric cylinder in a homogeneous medium has been studied. The Bel and Schatzman criterion of gravitational instability for a non-uniformly rotating medium is modified under the effect of a non-uniform/uniform magnetic field acting along the tangential and axial directions. As a consequence the stabilizing and destabilizing effect of the non-uniform magnetic field is obtained, a new criterion for the magneto-gravitational instability is deduced in terms of Alfven’s wave velocity; and it is also found that the Jeans criterion determines the gravitational instability in the absence of rotation and when the non-uniform/uniform magnetic field acts along the axis of the cylinder.  相似文献

Instability of a horizontal rotating layer of a self-gravitating electrically conducting fluid has been studied to simultaneously, include the effects of Hall currents and magnetic resistivity. The prevailing magnetic field is uniform and acts along the vertical direction along which the fluid has a one-dimensional density gradient. The solution has been obtained through the variational methods. The dispersion relation obtained has been solved numerically and it is found that Hall currents as well as magnetic resistivity have a destabilizing influence. Coriolis forces, however, have a stabilizing influence.  相似文献

The instability of a supercritical Taylor‐Couette flow of a conducting fluid with resting outer cylinder under the influence of a uniform axial electric current is investigated for magnetic Prandtl number Pm = 1. In the linear theory the critical Reynolds number for axisymmetric perturbations is not influenced by the current‐induced axisymmetric magnetic field but all axisymmetric magnetic perturbations decay. The nonaxisymmetric perturbations with m = 1 are excited even without rotation for large enough Hartmann numbers (“Tayler instability”). For slow rotation their growth rates scale with the Alfvén frequency of the magnetic field but for fast rotation they scale with the rotation rate of the inner cylinder. In the nonlinear regime the ratio of the energy of the magnetic m = 1 modes and the toroidal background field is very low for the non‐rotating Tayler instability but it strongly grows if differential rotation is present. For super‐Alfv´enic rotation the energies in the m = 1 modes of flow and field do not depend on the molecular viscosity, they are almost in equipartition and contain only 1.5 % of the centrifugal energy of the inner cylinder. The geometry of the excited magnetic field pattern is strictly nonaxisymmetric for slow rotation but it is of the mixed‐mode type for fast rotation – contrary to the situation which has been observed at the surface of Ap stars. The magnetic field at the surface of the Sun is confined to widely separated small, intense magnetic flux bundles or fibrils with most of the gas in a relatively field free state in the interstices. There is evidently a systematic field and fluid separation effect in operation, overriding the tendency for turbulent mixing of the two phases. It is well known that a constantly rotating volume of fluid soon excludes any exterior magnetic field. To take the next theoretical step, this paper examines the exclusion of magnetic field from a circular cylinder with oscillating angular velocity. The result is that the field is effectively excluded from any oscillating or tumbling body of fluid that maintains coherence over a sufficiently long time. However, there is no expectation of such long term coherence in turbulent convection in the Sun, suggesting that the observed separation of field and fluid does not come about by the exclusion of field from convective cells. This leads to the conclusion that the separation of fluid and field is a consequence of extraction of fluid from the field through buoyancy and reconnection.  相似文献

The effect of finite conductivity on the Rayleigh-Taylor instability of an incompressible, viscous rotating fluid through a porous medium has been studied in the presence of a two-dimensional horizontal magnetic field. It has been shown that the solution is characterized by a variational principle. By making use of the existence of the variational principle, proper solutions have been obtained for a semi-infinite fluid in which density has a one-dimensional (exponential) vertical stratification. The dispersion relation has been derived and solved numerically. It is found that finite resistivity and porosity have a destabilizing effect on the Rayleigh-Taylor instability while rotation has a stabilizing effect.  相似文献

Current-driven dust-acoustic instability in a collisional plasma   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The excitation of the dust-acoustic instability in a collisional dusty plasma is investigated. For conditions similar to those of recent laboratory experiments with neutral gas pressures of 100mTorr, it is found that zero-order electric fields E0 10 Vm−1 are sufficient for the growth of perturbations with centimeter wavelengths. Much larger wavelengths generally require larger values of E0. Free electrons in the dusty plasma have a stabilizing effect, which can be very pronounced at the longest wavelengths.  相似文献

A nonlinear analysis is presented to take into account the effect of a magnetic field on the capillary instability of a fluid jet, using the method of strained coordinates. The growth of the surface waves is calculated for wave number less than the critical wave number. A third-order solution shows that, as a result of the interaction among the lower harmonics, not only a higher harmonic appears; but there is also a feed back into the fundamental harmonic. It is important to note that the magnetic field has the effect of making the evolution curves of the disturbances symmetric about the axis as compared to the highly asymmetric pattern which prevails in its absence.Department of Chemical Engieering and TechnologyDepartment of Mathematics.  相似文献

Energy storage in chromospheric flux ropes is discussed, in the context of solar flares. The structure is represented by a cylindrically symmetric magnetic field of finite length. The field is assumed to be approximately force-free. The stability of the field to a kink perturbation is investigated. Flux ropes are rooted in dense photospheric material. So the ends of the field lines are taken to be fixed on rigid boundaries for all perturbations. An energy perturbation method is used and the boundary conditions give a stabilizing effect. It is shown that for a moderate degree of twisting the fields are stable to a kink perturbation. Thus energy can be stored in cylindrical fields prior to release in a solar flare. The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

We examine the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability of a magnetic loop, taking into account field line tying at its foot points. We use the ideal MHD energy equation to derive a stability equation for a specific class of perturbations. We found that for a loop with large aspect ratio (10) the field line tying effect is negligible to the m = 1 kink mode but important to the localized modes. The stability criterion for high m localized modes is derived and compared with the Suydam criterion. The result shows that for the perturbation of the class studied, there are two effects of field line tying; one is a field line bending effect which is always stabilizing and the other is a shear effect which is stabilizing or destabilizing depending on the sign of the gradient of potential magnetic field. The net effect of field line tying is determined by the sum of these two effects. The result of this work is contrary to the result of Hood and Priest, in which they found that the field line tying effect is significant to the m = 1 mode. We believe that the contradiction comes from their incomplete minimization of the energy equation.  相似文献
