An analysis is made of the steady-state response of a bilinear hysteretic structure supported on the surface of a viscoelastic half-space. The method of equivalent linearization is used to solve the equations of motion, and simplified approximate formulas are obtained for the fundamental resonant frequency of the system and for an effective critical damping ratio. Numerical results indicate that for non-linear hysteretic structures compliance of the soil foundation may lead to larger displacements than would occur if the base were rigid. This behaviour differs from that generally observed for linear systems, for which the effect of soil-structure interaction is to reduce the rigid-base response.  相似文献

The inelastic behaviour of eccentric single-storey building structures subjected to sinusoidal ground excitation is examined. The Kryloff-Bogoliuboff method is employed to provide approximate solutions in the amplitude-frequency domain. Structural resisting elements are assumed to exhibit bilinear hysteretic behaviour and coupled response is investigated in terms of both system response as well as individual element ductility requirements. In addition to demonstrating the well-known softening property inherent in yielding systems, the importance of the principal parameters governing coupled response is evaluated in a consistent parametric fashion. Within the context of earthquake resistant building design, the results indicate the absence of amplified response when torsional and translational frequencies are close, in contrast to the much emphasized observation of internal resonance for linear elastic structures. Equally important, structural elements located on the stiff edge of eccentric buildings are found to be only marginally affected by the magnitude of the eccentricity, thus indicating that seismic building codes which reduce design requirements for these elements underestimate actual behaviour substantially.  相似文献

The authors developed a semi‐active hydraulic damper (SHD) and installed it in an actual building in 1998. This was the first application of a semi‐active structural control system that can control a building's response in a large earthquake by continuously changing the device's damping coefficient. A forced vibration test was carried out by an exciter with a maximum force of 100 kN to investigate the building's vibration characteristics and to determine the system's performance. As a result, the primary resonance frequency and the damping ratio of a building that the SHDs were not jointed to, decreased as the exciting force increased due to the influence of non‐linear members such as PC curtain walls. The equivalent damping ratio was estimated by approximating the resonance curves using the steady‐state response of the SDOF bilinear hysteretic system. After the eight SHDs were jointed to the building, the system's performance was identified by a response control test for steady‐state vibration. The elements that composed the semi‐active damper system demonstrated the specified performance and the whole system operated well. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The maximum ductility demand and the edge displacement of a simple single mass eccentric model is evaluated when the system is subjected to ground motions represented by the El Centro 1940 and Taft 1952 earthquake records. The resisting elements are taken to be bilinear hysteretic. It is found that the ductility demand depends to a great extent on the energy content of the ground motions, particularly in the period range beyond the elastic period of the system. Unlike elastic response, the coincidence of uncoupled torsional and lateral frequencies does not lead to exceptionally high inelastic response. An increase by a factor of two in ductility demand is not uncommon for a system with large eccentricity as compared to a symmetrical system. Therefore, system eccentricity has a larger effect on ductility demand than earlier studies indicated. Using Clough's model to allow for stiffness degradation effect, results are found to be within 20 per cent of those calculated based on the bilinear hysteretic model.  相似文献

A new method of stiffness‐damping simultaneous identification of building structures is proposed using limited earthquake records. It is shown that when horizontal accelerations are recorded at the floors just above and below a specific storey in a shear building model, the storey stiffness and the damping ratio can be identified uniquely. The viscous damping coefficient and the linear hysteretic damping ratio can also be identified simultaneously in a numerical model structure. The accuracy of the present identification method is investigated through the actual limited earthquake records in a base‐isolated building. It is further shown that an advanced identification technique for mechanical properties of a Maxwell‐type model can be developed by combining the present method with a perturbation technique. Using a 40-storey building as an example, the structural response under the excitation of horizontal earthquake ground motion is shown to vary greatly with the direction from the building site to the epicentre. Two mathematical models are used to represent the ground motion: the stationary random process model and the evolutionary-type non-stationary random process model. The former model is suitable if the duration of the most intense portion of an earthquake is much longer than the fundamental natural period of the structure. The maximum standard deviations of selected structural response quantities are computed and plotted for all possible epicentre directions, and the information is believed to be useful for design purposes.  相似文献

A simple procedure for identifying hysteretic properties of seismically isolated bridges from full‐scale quick‐release tests is presented in this paper. An analytical solution for the quick‐release response of a SDOF system with a bilinear spring is derived. Based on the solution, some characteristics of such systems are obtained. A time domain optimization method is employed to identify the hysteretic properties of the lead–rubber bearings installed in seismically isolated bridges. The total damping effects of the isolation system are expressed as a combination of the rate‐independent (hysteretic) damping and the linear viscous damping. The Menegotto–Pinto (MP) model and bilinear model are used to represent the force–displacement relation of the lead–rubber bearings. In both the longitudinal and transverse directions the bridges have been idealized as single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems. Time histories recorded from the field quick‐release tests on two bridges are used for the examples presented herein. The hysteretic loops of the isolators obtained from laboratory tests are compared with those obtained using the optimization method, and they agree well. In conclusion, the procedure shown in this paper can be used to identify the essential in situ hysteretic characteristics of isolation bearings from quick‐release field testing. The best known model for numerically simulating the hysteretic behavior of various structural components is the bilinear hysteretic system. There are two possible mechanical formulations that correspond to the same bilinear model from a mathematical viewpoint. The first one consists of a linear elastic spring connected in series with a parallel system comprising a plastic slider and a linear elastic spring, while the second one comprises a linear elastic spring connected in parallel with an elastic-perfectly plastic system. However, the bilinear hysteretic model is unable to describe either softening or hardening effects in these components. In order to account for this, the bilinear model is extended to a trilinear one. Thus, two trilinear hysteretic models are developed and numerically tested, and the analysis shows that both exhibit three plastic phases. More specifically, the first system exhibits one elastic phase, while the second one exhibits two elastic phases according to the level of strain amplitude. Next, the change of slope between the plastic phases in unloading does not occur at the same displacement level in the two models. Furthermore, the dissipated energy per cycle in the first trilinear model, as proven mathematically and explained physically, decreases in the case of hardening and increases in the case of softening, while in the second trilinear model the dissipated energy per cycle remains unchanged, as is the case with the bilinear model. Numerical examples are presented to quantify the aforementioned observations made in reference to the mechanical behavior of the two trilinear hysteretic models. Finally, a set of cyclic shear tests over a wide range of strain amplitudes on a high damping rubber bearing is used in the parameter identification of the two different systems, namely (a) trilinear hysteretic models of the first type connected in parallel, and (b) trilinear hysteretic models of the second type also connected in parallel. The results show that the complex nonlinear shear behavior of high damping rubber bearings can be correctly simulated by a parallel system which consists of only one component, namely the trilinear hysteretic system of the first type. The second parallel system was not able to describe the enlargement of the dissipated hysteresis area for large strain amplitudes.  相似文献

In this paper, we present an optimal polynomial controller for reducing the peak response quantities of seismically excited non-linear or hysteretic building systems. A performance index, that is quadratic in control and polynomial of any order in non-linear states, is considered. The performance index is minimized based on the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman equation using a polynomial function of non-linear states, which satisfies all the properties of a Lyapunov function. The resulting optimal controller is a summation of polynomials in non-linear states, i.e. linear, cubic, quintic, etc. Gain matrices for different parts of the controller are determined from Riccati and Lyapunov matrix equations. Numerical simulation results indicate that the percentage of reduction for the selected peak response quantity increases with the increase of the earthquake intensity. Such load adaptive properties are very desirable, since the intensity of the earthquake ground acceleration is stochastic in nature. The proposed optimal polynomial controller is an effective and viable control method for non-linear or hysteretic civil engineering structures. It is an addition to available control methods in the literature.  相似文献

For the purpose of estimating the earthquake response, particularly the story drift demand, of reinforced concrete (R/C) buildings with proportional hysteretic dampers, an equivalent single‐degree‐of‐freedom (SDOF) system model is proposed. Especially in the inelastic range, the hysteretic behavior of an R/C main frame strongly differs from that of hysteretic dampers due to strength and stiffness degradation in R/C members. Thus, the proposed model, unlike commonly used single‐spring SDOF system models, differentiates the restoring force characteristics of R/C main frame and hysteretic dampers to explicitly take into account the hysteretic behavior of dampers. To confirm the validity of the proposed model, earthquake responses of a series of frame models and their corresponding equivalent SDOF system models were compared. 5‐ and 10‐story frame models were studied as representative of low‐ and mid‐rise building structures, and different mechanical properties of dampers—yield strength and yield deformation—were included to observe their influence on the effectiveness of the proposed model. The results of the analyses demonstrated a good correspondence between estimated story drift demands using the proposed SDOF system model and those of frame models. Moreover, the proposed model: (i) led to better estimates than those given by a single‐spring SDOF system model, (ii) was capable of estimating the input energy demand and (iii) was capable of estimating the total hysteretic energy and the participation of dampers into the total hysteretic energy dissipation, in most cases. Results, therefore, suggest that the proposed model can be useful in structural design practice. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The restoring capability (or re‐centering capability) is identified by the current design codes as a fundamental feature of seismic isolation systems. In this paper, the restoring capability of bilinear hysteretic or frictional seismic isolation systems is investigated in some detail. Certain energy considerations are examined first in order to provide insight into and reveal governing parameters on individual aspects of the problem. The restoring capability is then investigated through an extensive parametric study of smooth bilinear single‐degree‐of‐freedom hysteretic systems, with parameters covering a range of typical seismic isolation systems, subjected to a large group of recorded earthquakes. The results of the parametric analyses are processed statistically and regression analysis relations are derived that show the dependence of the residual displacement after the earthquake and the cumulative build up of displacements after a series of successive earthquakes on the governing parameters. Based on the analysis results, the features of the bilinear system that ensure sufficient restoring capability are identified. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The dynamic response of bridge piers with aseismic devices to earthquake excitation is evaluated by the stochastic equivalent linearization technique. The seismic acceleration is schematized through a Gaussian stationary random process. The pier is considered linear elastic, the span is idealized as a rigid mass, the restoring force of the device is represented through a non-linear differential model. The study of the complex modes of the linearized system gives an interpretation of the mechanical behaviour, leads to a formally elementary solution and highlights some phenomena which are typical of the hysteretic systems, particularly of those marked by weak hardening. Even though the solution is limited to the stationary field, it brings out several noteworthy considerations about the effective non stationary behaviour of the structure. This paper presents a method of identification for determining non-linear dynamic models for certain hysteretic structures. Particular attention is given to modelling and identifying the hysteretic behaviour of structures from strong-motion earthquake data. In this method, the response is separated into mode-like components which are analogous to those of a linear system. Based on modelling of the generalized restoring force of each mode-like component, both non-hysteretic and hysteretic non-linear models are incorporated into the general methodology. A non-hysteretic model provides an initial estimate for a final hysteretic model. The approach is applicable even when data are available from only a small number of locations in the structure. The structural model identified from this method provides a means to predict the response to future events and, ultimately, to examine the damage to a structure as a result of an earthquake.  相似文献

This paper explores the influence of linear hysteretic damping on the performance of passive tuned-inerter devices. An inerter is a device that produces a force proportional to the relative acceleration across its two terminals; devices incorporating inerters have received widespread attention in the earthquake engineering community, because they offer the ability to improve the seismic response of structures. However, the majority of this research has assumed that the damping components within the tuned-inerter device exhibit viscous, rather than hysteretic, damping. This restriction imposes an essential question on how the hysteretic damping model will change the performance of the device compared with the viscous damping model. It is shown that the response of viscous and hysteretic inerter systems have significant differences in displacement amplitude due to the frequency dependency of the damping. Therefore, a new formulation for obtaining the optimum loss factor of the hysteretic damping in the inerter system is proposed. Next, the challenges associated with accurately predicting the time-response of a hysteretically damped system are discussed. A numerical time-integration method is extended to address these challenges, using a new formulation that has the benefit of being broadly applicable to multidegree-of-freedom hysteretic linear systems and nonstationary random signals. The results show that the earthquake responses from the hysteretic damping model can differ significantly from the ones obtained via the viscous model.  相似文献

A nonlinear hysteretic model for the response and local damage analyses of reinforced concrete shear frames subject to earthquake excitation is proposed, and, the model is applied to analyse midbroken reinforced concrete (RC) structures due to earthquake loads. Each storey of the shear frame is represented by a Clough and Johnston hysteretic oscillator with degrading elastic fraction of the restoring force. The local damage is numerically quantified in the domain [0,1] using the maximum softening damage indicators which are defined in closed form based on the variation of the eigenfrequency of the local oscillators due to the local stiffness and strength deterioration. The proposed method of response and damage analyses is illustrated using a sample 5 storey shear frame with a weak third storey in stiffness and/or strength subject to sinusoidal and simulated earthquake excitations for which the horizontal component of the ground motion is modeled as a stationary Gaussian stochastic process with Kanai-Tajimi spectrum, multiplied by an envelope function.  相似文献

A study has been made of the response, during the San Fernando earthquake 9 February 1971, of the nine-storey steel frame Building 180, located at the California Institute of Technology, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena. The analysis throws light on the actual dynamical properties of the building during the earthquake, and also demonstrates that it is possible, when the ground motion is specified, to make accurate predictions of building motions during moderate earthquakes by using a linear viscously damped model. Methods of evaluating the lower mode periods and damping ratios from the earthquake records are described and the values obtained are compared with results from dynamic testing before and after the earthquake and with the periods computed from computer models of the building. Although no structural damage occurred and computed stresses in the steel frame were less than yield stresses, the periods measured by an ambient vibration test after the earthquake were of the order of 10 per cent higher than the pre-earthquake values. The maximum periods during the earthquake were found to be about 30 per cent higher than the post-earthquake periods.  相似文献

Records of the 1999 Chi–Chi earthquake, provided by the Dahan downhole array were analyzed, and nonlinear hysteretic stress–strain relations in the soil layers were estimated by the method previously used for studying the response of soils during the 1995 Kobe and the 2000 Tottori earthquakes. The obtained models of the soil behavior were applied for evaluating changes of the shear moduli in the soil layers and for the nonlinear identification of the soil behavior at Dahan site during the Chi–Chi earthquake. We found that reduction of the shear moduli in the soil layers did not exceed 5%, and the soil response was virtually linear. The content of the nonlinear components in the soil response was about 5% of the intensity of the response, and it was mostly due to the odd-order nonlinearities. A similarity in the stress–strain relations describing the behavior of soils during the 1995 Kobe earthquake, the 2000 Tottori earthquake, and the 1999 Chi–Chi earthquake was found, which indicates the possibility to describe the behavior of similar types of soils at different sites by similar stress–strain relations and predict soil behavior in future earthquakes.  相似文献

This paper concerns the seismic response of structures isolated at the base by means of High Damping Rubber Bearings (HDRB). The analysis is performed by using a stochastic approach, and a Gaussian zero mean filtered non‐stationary stochastic process is used in order to model the seismic acceleration acting at the base of the structure. More precisely, the generalized Kanai–Tajimi model is adopted to describe the non‐stationary amplitude and frequency characteristics of the seismic motion. The hysteretic differential Bouc–Wen model (BWM) is adopted in order to take into account the non‐linear constitutive behaviour both of the base isolation device and of the structure. Moreover, the stochastic linearization method in the time domain is adopted to estimate the statistical moments of the non‐linear system response in the state space. The non‐linear differential equation of the response covariance matrix is then solved by using an iterative procedure which updates the coefficients of the equivalent linear system at each step and searches for the solution of the response covariance matrix equation. After the system response variance is estimated, a sensitivity analysis is carried out. The final aim of the research is to assess the real capacity of base isolation devices in order to protect the structures from seismic actions, by avoiding a non‐linear response, with associated large plastic displacements and, therefore, by limiting related damage phenomena in structural and non‐structural elements. In order to attain this objective the stochastic response of a non‐linear n‐dof shear‐type base‐isolated building is analysed; the constitutive law both of the structure and of the base devices is described, as previously reported, by adopting the BWM and by using appropriate parameters for this model, able to suitably characterize an ordinary building and the base isolators considered in the study. The protection level offered to the structure by the base isolators is then assessed by evaluating the reduction both of the displacement response and the hysteretic dissipated energy. Nonstructural reinforced concrete flat walls architecturally designed as exterior/partition walls in concrete buildings were severely damaged by the 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tohoku. This damage was observed in the monolithic nonstructural flat walls of relatively old ductile concrete buildings. Although these flat walls might affect the overall seismic performance and behavior of a building, the nonstructural wall effects have not been clarified because of the complex interactions among the structural components. To understand these effects, this paper conducts an experimental and numerical investigation of the nonstructural wall effects, focusing on a typical residential building damaged by the 2011 earthquake. A single‐story, one‐bay moment‐resisting frame model of the building with a nonstructural flat wall was tested to clarify the fundamental behavior. The results reveal that the wall significantly contributed to the seismic performance of the overall frame until it failed in shear, subsequently losing structural effectiveness. Such experimental wall behavior could be simulated by the isoparametric element model. Moreover, the structural effects of the nonstructural flat walls on the global seismic performance and behavior of the investigated building were discussed through earthquake response analyses using ground motions recorded near the building site and pushover analyses. Consequently, the building damage could be simulated in an analytical case considering the nonstructural flat walls, showing larger inter‐story drifts in the lower stories due to softening of the walls. The analytical results also indicated that the softening of the nonstructural flat walls decreased the building ductility, as defined by ultimate inter‐story drifts. A study of the dynamics of building-soil interaction is presented that includes embedding of the foundation and material damping. By considering buildings on rigid footings embedded into linear elastic soil with hysteretic damping, it is shown that the earthquake response of the building-foundation model may be found from the response to modified excitation of equivalent one-degree-of-freedom linear, viscously damped oscillators resting on rigid ground. For a single-storey building approximate formulas are developed for the modified natural frequency and damping ratio. Results show that the natural frequency and damping in the system increase with embedding. Effective damping also increases with internal friction in the soil. Ignoring these two factors may underestimate considerably the effective natural frequency and damping in the system. In spite of additional sources of energy dissipation provided by the soil, damping in the equivalent oscillator may be greater or smaller than that corresponding to the superstructure alone, depending upon the system parameters. For lightly damped superstructures, the peak amplitude of the steady-state overturning moment at the base of a building supported on flexible soil is significantly smaller than that corresponding to rigid ground. This result has practical implications for earthquake design.  相似文献
