In this paper we present simulations of an extragalactic jet interacting with a clumpy and filamentary narrow line region (NLR) similar to the one observed in NGC 1068. We study the kinematic disturbance produced by the interaction. Hα recombination emissivity maps and the spectral distribution of the emission are calculated. We find that ablation flows from high density clouds in the turbulent cocoon can produce fast, high emissivity flows, resulting in line widths of the order of 1000 km s-1 comparable to those observed in NGC 1068 and other Seyfert galaxies with radio ejecta.  相似文献

Magnetic fields are observed everywhere in the universe. In this review, we concentrate on the observational aspects of the magnetic fields of Galactic and extragalactic objects. Readers can follow the milestones in the observations of cosmic magnetic fields obtained from the most important tracers of magnetic fields, namely, the star-light polarization, the Zeeman effect, the rotation measures (RMs, hereafter) of extragalactic radio sources, the pulsar RMs, radio polarization observations, as well as the newly implemented sub-mm and mm polarization capabilities. The magnetic field of the Galaxy was first discovered in 1949 by optical polarization observations. The local magnetic fields within one or two kpc have been well delineated by starlight polarization data. The polarization observations of diffuse Galactic radio background emission in 1962 confirmed unequivocally the existence of a Galactic magnetic field. The bulk of the present information about the magnetic fields in the Galaxy comes from anal  相似文献

A comparison is drawn between jet propagation in molecular clouds and jets launched by galaxies in clusters. The biggest difference between the two types of jets is found in the density contrast. While the cocoon plasma in extragalactic jets has now been detected in X-rays, the corresponding cocoon gas for Herbig-Haro flows is barely visible.  相似文献

The majority (maybe all) of proposed relativistic and non-relativistic models for variable extragalactic radio sources are based on the same general ideas proposed in the early model by Shklovsky (1960, 1965) – in particular, that the variability is caused by the synchrotron emission of magnetized clouds during their expansion. This model was a "standard" or "canonical" model for more than 20 years. One of the models that uses its ideas and approach is the "hedgehog" model, in which clouds or jets emit and expand in the strong external radial magnetic field of the nucleus of the source. This model has been suggested for a long time, but recent new results comparing it's predictions with observations of multifrequency spectra – especially, instantaneous spectra of many variable sources – and with the typical VLBI structure of compact objects have given strong new arguments in it's favour. The nature of the variability can be satisfactory explained by the hedgehog jet model for many variable and compact extragalactic radio sources. Thus, following up the ideas of I.S. Shklovsky, we conclude that the observed spectra and structure of compact sources can be caused by the synchrotron emission of a quasi-stationary jet in a longitudinal magnetic field, and the nature of variability can be explained by the variable ejection of the continious jet from the nucleus.  相似文献

To interpret the millimeter and sub-millimeter line emissions of atomic and molecular species from galactic and extragalactic photodissociation regions, warm gas components and molecular clouds, generally, escape probability formalism of Tielens & Hollenbach (herein referred as TH) are employed which is based on the assumption of plane parallel geometry of infinite slab allowing photons to escape only from the front. Contrary to the assumption observationally it is found that these lines are optically thin except OI(63μ m) and low rotational transitions of CO and some other molecules. This observational evidence led us to assume that emitting regions are finite parallel plane slab in which photons are allowed to escape from both the surfaces (back and front). Therefore, in the present study escape of radiations from both sides of the homogeneous and also clumpy PDR/molecular clouds are taken into consideration for calculating the line intensities at millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths (hereinafter referred as QA). Results are compared with that of the TH model. It is found that thermal and chemical structures of the regions are almost similar in both the formalisms. But line intensities are modified by differing factors. Particularly at low density and low kinetic temperature and also for optically thin lines line intensities calculated from TH and QA model differ substantially. But at density higher than the critical density and also for optically thick lines TH and QA models converge to almost same values. An attempt has been made to study the physical conditions of the M17 region employing the present formalism.  相似文献

The role of collisions between extragalactic jets and dense clouds in determining the appearance of high-redshift radio galaxies is discussed and investigated through numerical hydrodynamic simulations in three dimensions. The code has the facility to track jet material separately from ambient material. This allows us to use simplifying assumptions to calculate synthetic radio images. The results indicate that the most powerful radio sources are likely to be observed during or shortly after an interaction, and that such interactions can explain both the radio structures and the spatial association between optical and radio light found in powerful radio galaxies. In some cases such a scenario may provide an alternative explanation of jet properties to mechanisms based on variations in the source or fluid-dynamical instabilities. This author is supported by a PPARC research studentship  相似文献

Recently, the authors reported the first detections of HNC, C2H, CN and, perhaps, HC3N toward external galaxies. These detections, as well as that of extragalactic methanol, have been obtained using the 30-m IRAM mm-wave telescope. The previous results are revised in the light of recently available high-resolution CO maps of the respective galaxies. The relative abundances are similar to those found toward warm Galactic molecular clouds.  相似文献

We review results of two- and three-dimensional simulations of jets striking clouds with a view toward determining the conditions under which extragalactic jets might stably survive such collisions, and thereby produce “dog-leg” or wide-angle-tail morphologies. Under most circumstances, the jet either destroys the cloud and has its stability little affected or it stalls and is rapidly destabilized by the impact. But there does appear to be a limited range in parameter space where jets can be deflected by clouds but still survive for an extended period. Some of the effects of radio lobes on protogalactic clouds are also considered. At redshifts above 2, the number of radio galaxies (RGs) is much larger than it is in the local universe, and their lobes may well have filled a large fraction of the web of baryonic matter that is still forming galaxies at that epoch. The overpressures in those lobes can trigger extensive star formation on galactic scales and also may have major implications for the spreading of magnetic fields and metals through the intergalactic medium.  相似文献

We present predictions for the counts of extragalactic sources, the contributions to fluctuations and their angular power spectrum in each channel foreseen for the Planck Surveyor (formerly COBRAS/SAMBA ) mission. The contribution to fluctuations owing to clustering of both radio and far-IR sources is found to be generally small in comparison with the Poisson term; however the relative importance of the clustering contribution increases and may eventually become dominant if sources are identified and subtracted down to faint flux limits. The central Planck frequency bands are expected to be 'clean': at high galactic latitude (| b | > 20°), where the reduced galactic noise does not prevent the detection of the extragalactic signal, only a tiny fraction of pixels is found to be contaminated by discrete extragalactic sources. Moreover, the 'flat' angular power spectrum of fluctuations resulting from extragalactic sources substantially differs from that of primordial fluctuations; therefore, the removal of contaminating signals is eased even at frequencies where point sources give a sizeable contribution to the foreground noise.  相似文献

The propagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays in Galactic and extragalactic magnetic fields is investigated in the present paper. The motion of charged particles of different energies and chemical composition is simulated using different Galactic magnetic field models. Positions for the real sources of events registered at the Auger observatory are calculated taking into account the influence of both Galactic and extragalactic turbulent fields. The possibility of their correlation with the Centaurus A radio galaxy is analyzed.  相似文献

We present three dimensional simulations of the interaction of a light hypersonic jet with an inhomogeneous thermal and turbulently supported disk in an elliptical galaxy. These simulations are applicable to the GPS/CSS phase of some extragalactic radio sources. We identify four generic phases in the evolution of such a jet with the interstellar medium. The first is a “flood and channel” phase, dominated by complex jet interactions with the dense cloudy medium close to the nucleus. This is characterized by high pressure jet gas finding changing weak points in the ISM and flowing through channels that form and reform over time. A spherical, energy driven, bubble phase ensues, wherein the bubble is larger than the disk scale, but the jet remains fully disrupted close to the nucleus, so that the jet flux is thermalised and generates a smooth isotropic energy-driven bubble. In the subsequent, rapid, jet break-out phase the jet breaks free of the last obstructing dense clouds, becomes collimated and pierces the more or less spherical bubble. In the final classical phase, the jet propagates in a momentum-dominated fashion similar to jets in single component hot haloes, leading to the classical jet–cocoon–bow-shock structure.  相似文献

Different missions have observed mesospheric clouds on Mars in the last years. The presence of these clouds implies, among other conditions, mesospheric temperatures below CO2 condensation temperature. We use a General Circulation Model to study the mesospheric temperatures and compare the observed distribution of the mesospheric clouds and the predicted climatology of mesospheric temperatures. Although the model does not usually predict temperatures below condensation for daytime conditions, in some regions the predicted temperatures are close enough to condensation that perturbations caused by small scale processes could produce local excursions below condensation. The location and time of the lowest temperatures predicted by the GCM correspond to a first order with the two observed populations of mesospheric clouds: equatorial clouds observed before and after the Northern summer solstice, and mid-latitude clouds observed around the Northern winter solstice. For the equatorial clouds season, the model predicts temperatures close to condensation at the longitude, latitude, altitude and local time where they have been observed. We find that the diurnal migrating thermal tide and non-migrating tides are at the root of the spatial confinement of the equatorial clouds. For the mid-latitude clouds season, the temperatures predicted by the model at the location of the observed clouds is too high. Stereo observations by two different instruments allow for the determination of the zonal speed of these clouds producing a rare dataset of mesospheric winds. We compare the mesospheric zonal winds predicted by the model with these observations, finding a good agreement, although in some cases the observed variability exceeds that predicted by the model.  相似文献

Blazar emission of gamma rays and cosmic ray production of gamma rays in gas-rich clusters have been proposed recently as alternative sources of the high energy extragalactic diffuse gamma ray background radiation. We show that these sources also produce very different high energy extragalactic diffuse neutrino background radiations. An extragalactic neutrino background radiation may be detected by the new generation of large neutrino telescopes under construction and may be used to trace the origin of the extragalactic gamma radiation.  相似文献

The redshifted 1420 MHz emission from the HI in unresolved damped Lyman-α clouds at high z will appear as a background radiation in low frequency radio observations. This holds the possibility of a new tool for studying the universe at high-z, using the mean brightness temperature to probe the HI content and its fluctuations to probe power spectrum. Existing estimates of the HI density atz−3 imply a mean brightness temperature of 1 mK at 320 MHz. The cross-correlation between the temperature fluctuation across different frequencies and sight lines is predicted to vary from 10−7 K2 to 10−8 K2 over intervals corresponding to spatial scales from 10 Mpc to 40 Mpc for some of the currently favoured cosmological models. Comparing this with the expected sensitivity of the GMRT, we find that this can be detected with ∼ 10 hrs of integration, provided we can distinguish it from the galactic and extragalactic foregrounds which will swamp this signal. We discuss a strategy based on the very distinct spectral properties of the foregrounds as against the HI emission, possibly allowing the removal of the foregrounds from the observed maps.  相似文献

Interferometry in the optical and near infrared has so far played a marginal role in Extragalactic Astronomy. Active Galactic Nuclei are the brightest and most compact extragalactic sources, nonetheless only a very limited number could be studied with speckle interferometry and none with long baseline interferometry. The VLTI will allow the study of moderately faint extragalactic objects with very high spatial resolution thus opening a new window on the universe. With this paper we focus on three scientific cases to show how AMBER and MIDI can be used to tackle open issues in extragalactic astronomy. A number of problems related to understanding diffuse interstellar clouds are the focus of this contribution. Observations are discussed relating to the high velocity clouds, to the morphology of diffuse interstellar clouds and to the time variability of features in the diffuse clouds. Abundances and ionization issues are dealt with as needed. In some of these areas, progress may be substantial over the next few years, through observation and modeling, but in others, it may be that a new generation of space satellites will be required to make substantial progress.  相似文献

Three-dimensional simulations of the disk-halo interaction show the formation of a thick HI and HII gas disk with different scale heights. The thick HI disk prevents the disk gas from expanding freely upwards, unless some highly energetic event such as chimneys occurs, whereas the thick HII disk acts as a disk-halo interaction region from where the hot ionized gas flows freely into the halo. The upflowing gas reaches the maximum height at z ∼ 9.3 ± 1 kpc becoming thermally unstable due to radiative losses, and condenses into HI clouds. Because the major fraction of the gas is gravitationally bound to the Galaxy, the cold gas returns to the disk. The descending clouds will have at some height high velocities. In a period of 200 Myr of fountain evolution, some 10 percent of the total number of clouds are HVCs. We discuss the problem of ultra high energy nuclei propagation in extragalactic background radiations. The present paper is the continuation of the accompanying paper I where we have presented three new analytic methods to calculate the fluxes and spectra of ultra high energy cosmic ray nuclei, both primary and secondary, and secondary protons. The computation scheme in this paper is based on the analytic solution of coupled kinetic equations, which takes into account the continuous energy losses due to the expansion of the universe and pair-production, together with photo-disintegration of nuclei. This method includes in the most natural way the production of secondary nuclei in the process of photo-disintegration of the primary nuclei during their propagation through extragalactic background radiations. In paper I, in order to present the suggested analytical schemes of calculations, we have considered only the case of the cosmic microwave background radiation, in the present paper we generalize this computation to all relevant background radiations, including infra-red and visible/ultra-violet radiations, collectively referred to as extragalactic background light. The analytic solutions allow transparent physical interpretation of the obtained spectra. Extragalactic background light plays an important role at intermediate energies of ultra high energy cosmic ray nuclei. The most noticeable effect of the extragalactic background light is the low-energy tail in the spectrum of secondary nuclei.  相似文献
