The Gd and Sm isotopic compositions have been measured in the Luna 16, G-2 soil. This sample has the largest low energy neutron fluence ψ = 5.9 × 1016n/cm2 (E < 0.18eV) yet observed in a lunar sample. The ratio of the number of neutrons captured per atom by149Sm to157Gd is 0.76 which is distinct from the value of 0.86 observed at the Apollo 11, 12 and 14 sites. This indicates a softer neutron energy spectrum at the Sea of Plenty.  相似文献

The Apollo 16 soils have the largest low energy neutron fluences (up to 1017 n/cm2, E < 0.18eV) yet observed in lunar samples. Variations in the isotopic ratios 158Gd/157Gd and 150Sm/149Sm (up to 1.9% and 2.0% respectively) indicate that the low energy neutron fluence in the Apollo 16 drill stem increases with depth throughout the section sampled. Such a variation implies that accretion has been the dominant regolith “gardening” process at this location. The data may be fit by a model of continuous accretion of pre-irradiated material at a rate of ~70 g/(cm2 · 108yr) or by models involving as few as two slabs of material in which the first slab could have been deposited as long as 109 yr ago.The ratio of the number of neutrons captured per atom by Sm to the number captured per atom by Gd is lower than in previously measured lunar samples, which implies a lower energy neutron spectrum at this site. The variation of this ratio with chemical composition is qualitatively similar to that predicted by Lingenfelter, Canfield and Hampel.Variations are observed in the ratio 152Gd/160Gd which are fluence correlated and probably result from neutron capture by151Eu.  相似文献

The Luna 16 regolith sample differs from Apollo 11, 12 and 14 regolith and basalt samples by having smaller negative Eu and Sr anomalies and nearly chondritic Eu/Sm and Eu/Sr ratios although the overall REE, Ba, Sr and U concentrations are 25 to 45 times chondrites. Major element data, in particular FeO vs. Al2O3, show that the Luna 16 regolith sample is composed of materials that follow a quantitatively different Fe/Al variation than do Apollo 11, 12, 14 and 15 samples. The small Eu and Sr anomalies and the displaced Fe/Al variation are two chemical features unique to the Luna 16 regolith sample. The Luna 16 regolith sample can contain little if any of the rock types abundant at Apollo sites, thus indicating that the unique chemical features are typical of local or nearby materials and indicate a separate petrogenetic province for major component rock types of the Luna 16 regolith.  相似文献

Abundances and isotopic compositions of all the stable noble gases have been measured in 19 different depths of the Apollo 15 deep drill core, 7 different depths of the Apollo 16 deep drill core, and in several surface fines and breccias. All samples analyzed from both drill cores contain large concentrations of solar wind implanted gases, which demonstrates that even the deepest layers of both cores have experienced a lunar surface history. For the Apollo 15 core samples, trapped4He concentrations are constant to within a factor of two; elemental ratios show even greater similarities with mean values of4He/22Ne= 683±44,22Ne/36Ar= 0.439±0.057,36Ar/84Kr= 1.60±0.11·103, and84Kr/132Xe= 5.92±0.74. Apollo 16 core samples show distinctly lower4He contents,4He/22Ne(567±74), and22Ne/36Ar(0.229±0.024), but their heavy-element ratios are essentially identical to Apollo 15 core samples. Apollo 16 surface fines also show lower values of4He/22Ne and22Ne/36Ar. This phenomenon is attributed to greater fractionation during gas loss because of the higher plagioclase contents of Apollo 16 fines. Of these four elemental ratios as measured in both cores, only the22Ne/36Ar for the Apollo 15 core shows an apparent depth dependance. No unambiguous evidence was seen in these core materials of appreciable variations in the composition of the solar wind. Calculated concentrations of cosmic ray-produced21Ne,80Kr, and126Xe for the Apollo 15 core showed nearly flat (within a factor of two) depth profiles, but with smaller random concentration variations over depths of a few cm. These data are not consistent with a short-term core accretion model from non-irradiated regolith. The Apollo 15 core data are consistent with a combined accretion plus static time of a few hundred million years, and also indicate variable pre-accretion irradiation of core material. The lack of large variations in solar wind gas contents across core layers is also consistent with appreciable pre-accretion irradiation. Depth profiles of cosmogenic gases in the Apollo 16 core show considerably larger concentrations of cosmogenic gases below ~65 cm depth than above. This pattern may be interpreted either as an accretionary process, or by a more recent deposition of regolith to the upper ~70 cm of the core. Cosmogenic gas concentrations of several Apollo 16 fines and breccias are consistent with ages of North Ray Crater and South Ray Crater of ~50·106 and ~2·106 yr, respectively.  相似文献

Summary Spectrometric experiments performed, in November 1976, within the framework of the Latitude Survey Mission on board the NASA Convair 990 from Ames Research Center are briefly deseribed. The results presented concern odd nitrogen molecules, HCl and water vapor. In terms of vertical column density, HNO3 is predominant over NO+NO2 at all latitudes higher than 40 degrees. A seasonal variation of NO2 abundance is observed, with larger values in the summer hemisphere at high latitude. The mean zenith column density of HCl above 11 km is 1.5×1015 mol.cm–2, with no evidence for any seasonal or climatic variation. Local number densities as high as 1.4×1010 mol.cm–3 for HNO3 and 5.4×1014 mol.cm–3 for water vapor have been measured during the same flight near 11 km.  相似文献

We investigated the spatial distribution and composition of microbenthos in the seafloor sediments from 48 stations in the Yellow Sea using epifluorescence microscopy and quantitative protargol staining techniques. The bacterial abundance ranged from 2.4×108 to 1.9×109 cells cm−3 in the wet sediment, about three orders of magnitude higher than that of phototrophic (PNFs, from 6.4×105 to 8.8×106 cells cm−3) and heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNFs, from 5.8×104 to 5.9×106 cells cm−3) and four orders of magnitude higher than that of cyanobacteria (from 2.3×104 to 2.3×106 cells cm−3) in the upper 5 cm of sediments. The abundance of diatoms varied greatly, from 3-1.1×105 cells cm−3 in the upper 8 cm of sediments, whereas those of heterotrophic microflagellates (HMFs, 1-182 cells cm−3) and ciliates (1-221 cells cm−3) were less varied and lower. The biomass partitioning indicates the primary importance of benthic bacteria (50.3 μg C cm−3 on average), followed by PNFs (40.7 μg C cm−3), HNFs (19.3 μg C cm−3), and finally by cyanobacteria (8.8 μg C cm−3). Benthic diatoms (0.8 μg C cm−3), ciliates (0.15 μg C cm−3), and HMFs (0.03 μg C cm−3) contribute relatively small fractions to the total biomass of the microbenthos. About 95% of diatoms, 77% of ciliates, and 56% of HMFs were distributed in the upper 2 cm of sediments, whereas no distinct vertical distributions were observed for bacteria, cyanobacteria, PNFs, and HNFs. The microbenthos are quantitatively important in the shallow seafloor, wherein their main components have an average abundance three orders of magnitude higher than the corresponding planktonic organisms in the same sea area. Our estimates indicate that pico-sized phytobenthos might contribute a large proportion to the primary production. Benthic ciliates and heterotrophic flagellates contribute about 90% to the estimated combined metabolic rate of micro- and meiobenthic consumers in the whole sea area, with nanoheterotrophs accounting for the majority. The data suggest the potential for the rapid primary and secondary production of microbenthos and detrital utilization in the shallow seafloor sediments of the Yellow Sea.  相似文献

Summary The stress and strain fields in various earth models are studied under the assumption of an elastic mantle and the existence of thermal stresses which are proportional to the difference between the initial and present temperatures. The thermoelastic equilibrium equation for a 49-layered earth with spherical symmetry is integrated and programmed for various combinations of velocities, densities and temperatures. Results show that the strains in the upper mantle depend to a great extent on the thermal model. Central radial strain ranges from 5.2 to 7.3 per cent and the central pressure ranges between 3.1 and 3.7×1012 dynes/cm2 for all models. It is established that the thermal history of the earth could not have changedBullen's pressures by more than 0.4×1012 dynes/cm2.Contribution No. 1095, Division of Geological Sciences, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California.  相似文献

The activity of solar cosmic-ray-produced53Mn has been measured as a function of depth in the upper 100 g/cm2 (~55 cm) of lunar cores 60009–60010 and 12025–12028. Additional samples which supplement our earlier work were analyzed from the Apollo 15 and 16 drill stems. These data, taken in conjunction with our previously published results and the22Na and26Al data of the Battelle Northwest group, indicate that in at least three of the four cases studied the regolith has been measureably disturbed within the last 10 m.y. In one case gardening to 19 g/cm2 is required. Activities measured in the uppermost 2 g/cm2 indicate frequent mixing within this depth range. No undisturbed profiles were observed nor were any major discontinuities observed in the profiles. The Monte Carlo gardening model of Arnold has been used to derive profiles for the gardened moon-wide average of53Mn and26Al as a function of depth. The53Mn and26Al experimental results are compared with these theoretical predictions. Agreement is good in several respects, but the calculated depths of disturbance appear to be too low.  相似文献

Bulk compositions of igneous and microbreccia lithic fragments, glasses, and chondrules from Luna 16 fines as well as compositions of minerals in basaltic lithic fragments were determined with the electron microprobe. Igneous lithic fragments and glasses are divided into two groups, the anorthositic-noritic-troctolitic (hereafter referred to as ANT) and basaltic groups. Chondrules are always of ANT composition and microbreccia lithic fragments are divided into groups 1 and 2. The conclusions reached may be summarized as follows: (1) Luna 16 fines are more similar in composition to Apollo 11 than to Apollo 12 and 14 materials (e.g. Apollo 11 igneous lithic fragments and glasses fall into similar ANT and basaltic groups; abundant norites in Luna 16 and Apollo 11 are not KREEP as in Apollo 12 and 14; Luna 16 basaltic lithic fragments may represent high-K and low-K suites as is the case for Apollo 11; rare colorless to greenish, FeO-rich and TiO2-poor glasses were found in both Apollo 11 and Luna 16; Luna 16 spinels are similar to Apollo 11 spinels but unlike those from Apollo 12). (2) No difference was noted in the composition of lithic fragments, glasses and chondrules from Luna 16 core tube layers A and D. (3) Microbreccia lithic fragments of group 1 originated locally by mixing of high proportions of basaltic with small proportions of ANT materials. (4) Glasses are the compositional analogs to the lithic fragments and not to the microbreccias; most glasses were produced directly from igneous rocks. (5) Glasses show partial loss of Na and K due to vaporization in the vitrification process. (6) Luna 16 chondrules have ANT but not basaltic composition. It is suggested that either liquid droplets of ANT composition are more apt to nucleate from the supercooled state; or basaltic droplets have largely been formed in small and ANT droplets in large impact events (in the latter case, probability for homogeneous and inhomogeneous nucleation is larger. (7) No evidence for ferric iron and water-bearing minerals was found. (8) Occurrence of a great variety of igneous rocks in Luna 16 samples (anorthosite, noritic anorthosite, anorthositic norite, olivine norite, troctolite, and basalt) confirm our earlier conclusion that large-scale melting or partial melting to considerable depth and extensive igneous differentiation must have occurred on the moon.  相似文献

We analyzed meteor decay times measured by a VHF radar at King Sejong Station by classifying strong and weak meteors according to their estimated electron line densities. The height profiles of monthly averaged decay times show a peak whose altitude varies with season at altitudes of 80?85 km. The higher peak during summer is consistent with colder temperatures that cause faster chemical reactions of electron removal. By adopting temperature dependent empirical recombination rates from rocket experiments and meteor electron densities of 2×105?2×106 cm?3 in a decay time model, we are able to account for decreasing decay times below the peak for all seasons without invoking meteor electron removal by hypothetical icy particles.  相似文献

Summary The real area of contact has been determined, and measurements of the maximum and average surface temperatures generated during frictional sliding along precut surfaces in Tennessee sand-stone have been made, through the use of thermodyes. Triaxial tests have been made at 50 MPa confining pressure and constant displacement rates of 10–2 to 10–6 cm/sec, and displacements up to 0.4 om. At 0.2 cm of stable sliding, the maximum temperature decreases with decreasing nominal displacement rate from between 1150° to 1175°C at 10–2 cm/sec to between 75° to 115°C at 10–3 cm/sec. The average temperature of the surface is between 75 and 115°C at 10–2 cm/sec, but shows no rise from room temperature at 10–3 cm/sec. At 0.4 cm displacement, and in the stick-slip mode, as the nominal displacement rate decreases from 10–3 to 10–6 cm/sec, the maximum temperature decreases from between 1120° to 1150°C to between 1040° to 1065°C. The average surface temperature is 115° to 135°C at displacement rates from 2.6×10–3 to 10–4 cm/sec.With a decrease in the displacement rate from 10–2 to 10–6 cm/sec, the real area of contact increases from about 5 to 14 percent of the apparent area; the avergge area of asperity contact increases from 2.5 to 7.5×10–4 cm2. Although fracture is the dominate mechanism during stick-up thermal softening and creep may also contribute to the unstable sliding process.  相似文献

Quantitative measurements of crystal size distributions (CSDs) have been used to obtain kinetic information on crystallization of industrial compounds (Randolph and Larson 1971) and more recently on Hawaiian basalts (Cashman and Marsh 1988). The technique is based on a population balance resulting in a differential equation relating the population densityn of crystals to crystal sizeL, i.e., at steady staten =n o exp(–L/itG), wheren o is nucleation density,G is the average crystal growth rate, is the average growth time, and the nucleation rateJ =n o G. CSD (Inn vsL) plots of plagioclase phenocrysts in 12 samples of Mount St. Helens blast dacite and 14 samples of dacite from the 1980–1986 Mount St. Helens dome are similar and averageG = 9.6 (± 1.1) × 10–3 cm andn o = 1–2 × 106 cm–4. Reproducibility of the measurements was tested by measuring CSDs of 12 sections cut from a single sample in three mutually perpendicular directions; precision of the size distributions is good in terms of relative, but not necessarily absolute values (± 10%). Growth and nucleation rates for plagioclase have been calculated from these measurements using time brackets of = 30–150 years; growth ratesG are 3–10 × 10–12cm/s, and nucleation ratesJ are 5–21 × 10–6/cm3 s.G andJ for Fe-Ti oxides calculated from CSD data areG = 2–13 ± 10–13 cm/sec andJ = 7–33 × 10–5/cm3 s, respectively. The higher nucleation rate and lower growth rate of oxides resulted in a smaller average crystal size than for plagioclase. Sizes of plagioclase microlites (<0.01 mm) in the blast dacite groundmass have been measured from backscatter SEM photographs. Nucleation of these microlites was probably triggered by intrusion of material into the cone of Mount St. Helens in spring 1980. This residence time of 52 days gives minimum crystallization estimates ofG = 1–3 × 10–11 cm/s andJ = 9–16 × 1O3/cm3 s. The skeletal form of the microlites provides evidence for nucleation and growth at high values of undercooling (T) relative to the phenocrysts. A comparison of nucleation and growth rates for the two crystal populations (phenocrysts vs microlites) suggests that while growth rate seems to be only slightly affected by changes inT, nucleation rate is a very strong function of undercooling. A comparison of plagioclase nucleation and growth rates measured in the Mount St. Helens dacite and in basalt from Makaopuhi lava lake in Hawaii suggests that plagioclase nucleation rates are not as dependent on composition. Groundmass textures suggest that plagioclase microphenocrysts crystallized at depth rather than in the conduit, in the dome, or after extrusion onto the surface. Most of this crystallization appears to be in the form of crystal growth (coarsening) of groundmass microphenocrysts at small degrees of undercooling rather than extensive nucleation of new crystals. This continuous crystallization in a shallow magmatic reservoir may provide the overpressurization needed to drive the continuing periodic domebuilding extrusions, which have been the pattern of activity at Mount St. Helens since December 1980.  相似文献

The results of 21 rocket flights of Arcas optical ozonesondes have been combined to produce estimates of the mean ozone distribution and its variability which apply to a broad range of latitudes. The flights were launched at sites from near the equator to 58°S and to 64°N in the years from 1965 to 1971. The local-noon mean ozone densities in molecules/cubic centimeter are 7.0×1010 at 50 kw, 6.7×1011 at 40 km, 3.1×1012 at 30 km, and 3.1×1012 at 20 km. The maximum density is 4.5×1012 at 24 km. The range of observed densities is about ±30% of the mean value at 50 km, ±40% at 40 km, ±40% at 30 km and +200%, –66% at 20 km. The variabilities at the higher altitudes in this set of observations are much less than that indicated from previous measurements.  相似文献

A technique employing the resonant nuclear reaction 1H(19F, αγ) 16O has been used to measure hydrogen concentration versus depth in selected coarse fine fragments from the Apollo 11 and Apollo 15 missions, and in glass coated surface chips from two Apollo 15 rocks. The highly variable hydrogen content in the coarse fine fragments is concentrated mainly in a layer extending from the surface to a depth of 2000 ± 500A?. The hydrogen content of the surface region of the Apollo 15 rock chips is comparable to that of the coarse fine samples, but is concentrated mainly within a few hundred angstroms of the surface. The hydrogen depth distribution in a piece of platinum foil from the Apollo 16 Lunar surface Cosmic Ray Experiment was also measured in an attempt to place a limit on the flux of 10–40 keV protons associated with a solar flare event.  相似文献

The thermal conductivity of a simulated Apollo 12 lunar soil sample was measured with a needle probe under vacuum. The result showed that the sample, with bulk densities of 1.70–1.85 g cm?3 held in a vertical cylinder (2.54 cm in diameter and 6.99 cm long) has a thermal conductivity ranging from 8.8 to 10.9 mW m?1 K?1. This is comparable to the lunar regolith's thermal conductivity as determined in situ. Besides the dense packing of the soil particles, an enhanced intergranular thermal contact, due to the self-compression of the sample, is necessary to raise the sample's thermal conductivity from the level of loose soil (< 5 mW m?1 K?1) to that of the lunar regolith deeper than 35 cm (~ 10 mW m?1 K?1). A model of the lunar regolith, a thin layer of loose soil resting on a compacted self-compressed substratum, is consistent with the lunar regolith's surface structure as deduced from an observation of the lunar surface's brightness temperature. Martian regolith surface structure is similar, except that its surface layer may be missing in places because of aeolian activity. Measurements of thermal conductivity under simulated martian surface conditions showed that the thermal properties of loose and compacted soils agreed with the two peak values of the martian surface's thermal inertia as observed from “Viking” orbiters, suggesting that drifted loose soil and exposed compacted soil are responsible for the bimodal distribution of the martian surface's thermal inertia near zero elevation. For compacted soil exposed to the martian surface to have the same thermal conductivity as that buried under the surface layer, a cohesion of the soil particles must be assumed.  相似文献

Luna 16 sample B-1 was the largest fragment (62 mg) obtained in the sample exchange with the USSR. Petrologic, mineralogic, and chemical investigations have been made on this fragment in conjunction with Rb-Sr and40Ar/39Ar investigations by our colleagues. Sample B-1 is a fine-grained ophitic basalt but is distinguished from the Apollo samples by containing a single pyroxene, predominantly pigeonitic, an ilmenite content (7%) intermediate to that of the Apollo 11 and 12 samples, and subequal amounts of pyroxene (50%) and plagioclase (40%). Chemically it is distinguished by a high Sr content (437 ppm) and a high K/U value (4700). The K-content (1396 ppm) is higher than that of Luna 16 soil sample A-2.  相似文献

Measurements of cosmic-ray produced53Mn are reported for a series of lunar surface samples down to a depth of 416 g/cm2. These results clearly illustrate the decrease in activity with depth as the incident galactic cosmic rays are absorbed. Below 60 g/cm2 the production rate decreases exponentially with a mean length, λ, of about 220 g/cm2. These results indicate that, at the Apollo 15 site, the lunar regolith has been unmixed, on a meter scale, for the last 5 my. The neutron activation technique for53Mn, which allowed samples smaller than 200 mg to be used for these measurements, is described.  相似文献

A large number of individual enstatite crystals of the gas-rich aubrites Khor Temiki, Staroe Pesyanoe and Bustee was analyzed for implanted helium and for steep gradient ion tracks in order to investigate the relation between solar flare irradiation and solar wind implantation with extreme local resolution. Irradiated and non-irradiated crystals coexist within the gas-rich phases of the aubrites investigated. Statistically in a given meteorite the proportion of crystals with implanted solar wind is similar to the proportion of solar flare irradiated crystals. It varies from aubrite to aubrite in the sequence of their bulk contents of trapped rare gases. For nine enstatites, tracks and rare gases were subsequently measured within the same crystal. The results support the intimate association of solar flare tracks and implanted He. The4He-surface concentrations of irradiated crystals vary between <5 × 10?7 and 10?4 cm3 STP/cm2.The absence of saturation effects together with the low degree of elemental gas fractionation indicates very short solar wind exposure times (< 100 yr) rather than strong diffusion losses. The evidence from tracks and rare gases can be understood in terms of an early simultaneous irradiation of aubritic crystals by solar wind and solar flare particles on top of a regolith-covered parent body.  相似文献

The Apollo 11 soil breccias are samplers of the ancient lunar environment due to their history in the regolith and their efficient closure to addition of recent solar wind upon compaction. These breccias contain the lowest15N/14N isotopic ratio yet reported for any lunar sample (in fact, for any natural sample). This extends the range of variation of15N/14N of the solar wind to greater than 30%, from a δ15N of ?190‰ in the past to +120‰ at present. No mechanism is yet known that is capable of accounting for such a large change in the15N/14N ratio without producing a substantial concomitant change in the13C/12C ratio, although some sort of nuclear reaction in the sun appears to be required. Apollo 11 soil breccias and 15086 are all formed by meteoritic impacts which compact the lower regolith against the basement rock without much heating. Rock 15086 formed from the layer of regolith between 100 and 200 cm depth, as shown by the close agreement between the nitrogen content and isotopic ratios of 15086 and those of the Apollo 15 deep drill core. Cosmic ray exposure ages, based on spallation-produced15N, are 2.3 ± 0.4 b.y. for Apollo 11 breccias. This age is much greater than the estimate from cosmogenic21Ne, presumably due to diffusive loss of neon.  相似文献
